Other pickups on guitar: none
Artists using this pickup: none that I know of, Wolfe is a smaller operation
You musical style(s): Blues, country, rockabilly
Reason for pickup change: The stock pickups were decent, but overall were a little thin and piercing with some low end flub.
Sound
:
No Opinion
Perceived output level: slightly more than typical, more like old broadcaster, nocaster sound (typical bridge pickups are wound at 7.5)
Tone: The tone is noticeably fatter, but retains vintage twang. Good, tight bass, with that clear, not piercing, beautiful tele high end.
Sonic evaluation: The pickups are in my Fernandes TE-3 thinline (clone of a Fender '69 reissue). I run into a Fulltone Fulldrive2 into a Peavey Delta Blues (1x15, 30 watt) with a Dano Danecho in the effects loop.
These are by far the best tele pickups I've ever heard. I highly recommend them to anyone looking to improve the clarity and overall "punch" of his/her tele. The neck pickup (considered to be the weak point of most tele) has a wonderful round sound, even with the tone rolled down. The bridge pickup is twangy, and will howl on command. I custom ordered my pickups (esp. the bridge) to have a little more bite, and this makes these particular pickups a little bit "dangerous" in the wrong hands. Like all good tele pickups, they hide nothing. Wolfe Macleod runs a one man operation, and his customer service is second to none.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: I play country/blues with a little old time rock and roll/rockabilly mixed in. This pickup is suitable for blues, rock, rockabilly, country, basically everything but metal (shouldn't be doin' that with a tele anyway).
Overall Rating
:
9
Comments: If these pickups were destroyed or stolen, I would order a new set immediately. I have been playing for 5 years, and also own a Gibson Flying V w/ SD Seth Lovers (which is sitting in the closet with it's tail between it's leg after hearing the tele). I give these pickups a 9, because 10 is perfection, and I've never heard "perfect pickups.
Wolfe Macleod runs a one man operation, and his customer service is second to none. While I won't give any "sound" a perfect 10, I will say his service deserves the highest number. Wolfe will wind you a set of pickups to your specs, and you have 30 days to try them out. If you're not happy, send them back and he'll rewind them free. Not happy a second time? Send them back and he'll rewind them again and again, until you are completely satisfied.
