I reviewed the website and checked HC reviews. I then emailed and later called Doug Stalters, aka Vintone Circuits, and ordered my Clipper IV. This head is designed with 2 preamp sections, one octal and one nine pin. Thus allowing infinite preamp valves. Then for output we had 3 sockets to allow safe selection of the three output circuits. Had DI and variable ohm outputs and 3 band EQ. All sounded like a very nice design.

Well, I don't know. I ordered the head in 2005. Sent my first grand and waited a year. Periodic reply to emails and about a year later I got a pic with the chassis and switch block. I sent the next grand. No sounds even today in 2009. Only sounds I hear are those of other folks swindled out of dollars or products by the once talented Doug Stalters.

Doug Stalters reflects a small but serious problem with a rare few internet sites. Wherever Doug shows up again, Florida, North Carolina or prison, I wouldn't recommend you offer any dollars without a product in your hand. I wouldn't trust him to service any gear, either.

I had this little amp custom made for me. I was looking for the best small head I could find-one that had the seemingly conflicting requirements of super-simplicity and super-versatility.I also wanted it to look cool-in an exposed-chassis style (no case), and be of the highest quality.
...oh yeah-it also had to have killer tone.
Doug did an awesome job of interpreting the above:
-Single-ended cathode bias-you can use most any octal power tube without adjustment to get huge range of tone and power output
-Tone, volume, gain and feedback controls, all mil-spec pots
-4 and 8 ohm speaker jacks, plus line-out
-Totally point-to point wired-the innards are as beautiful as the outside
-All top quality parts-
-Chrome chassis with heavy duty folding handles
-Unbelievably awesome tone.

Because I have a small collection of guitars, I needed an amp that brought the best out of them all.
The hardest guitar to get right is my 1959 epiphone Coronet with the very cool but weak "New York" pickup. This little amp can make it sound like anything from a pissed off tyranasaurus rex to a sweet little jazz guitar-and at a wide volume range.
I also use several Gibson hollowbodies with P-90's, a little Rick Electro, and misc. Fenders. It seems to do everything well-but it's the way you can dial-in the distortion just right, with the most righteous possible tone!
I have tried it through all sorts of speaker cab's-single 12's,4x10's-
depending on what output tube it is running, it always sounds great. Of course, it's a little amp-but it can do a surprising amount of damage to your hearing with most any common speaker/cab configuration.
Best of all, however, is it's ability to generate gorgeous tone at low volume- Uncompromised, perfect, killer gorgeous tone at talking volume!

Doug is fantastic to work with. His heart is truly in his work. He has an inspired, can-do attitude that makes doing a custom project a blast. He works his butt off for what he charges, so I'd have to say that his work is a great value. He gave me exactly what I wanted and then some.
His care is evident not only in the way he ships his amps in really cool custom made wood crates (even the screws that hold it together are all perfectly laid out and aligned) but he includes a nice full-color manual.
Doug extends a full lifetime warranty...Who does that with electronics!
I have seldom felt better about spending money!
