The 879 A seems to date from the late 60's and early 70's. There were 2 versions as far as I know of the Santana speaker. The 879 A was a sealed cabinet with a 15 inch biflex woofer. The tweeter was a 3 inch driver. The other version of this cabinet was a ported type enclosure. This enclosure had a 12 inch woofer and I believe the same tweeter as the previous 15 inch version box. These enclosures were only ever designed to be music speakers and not instrumental speakers. The fellow that wrote about utilizing one of these as a guitar speaker had the wrong application for these boxes.
I still use my 879 A's. I have had them since 1972 when they were new. I now have them hooked up with a set of surround speakers and they serve as a sub-woofer functions. Unfortunately these enclosures have become less popular now and I would be hard pressed to recover my initial investment of 700.00(CAN) for the pair. They are for sale for the right price.

This is an Altec Lansing guitar speaker cab with a 15" woofer and a 3" tweeter, housed in a nice and very heavy wood cabinet with a textured black formica top. It's got a hard wire input in the back and a cloth grille. It's called a Santana, as in Carlos.

I'm playing a modified MexStrat through a Vox Cambridge 15. Using this speaker that little amp does not sound little any more.

This cab weighs a ton and with it's nice styling it was probably not made for going on the road.

I had to ask a local repair shop what this cabinet was for since it looks more like a fancy subwoofer than a guitar speaker cab.

If you happen across one of these beasts, grab it cause it's the kind of thing that you can use in your living room as a table, and just sit your head or combo on it when you want to make music.
