I'm not sure what year this amp was made, I assume sometime in the mid-70s. I got mine used in 1979 along with my first bass, got them both from the same person, assuming it was ok to play the bass through. At that time, being 13 years old, I had no idea there was a difference between bass amps and guitar amps. Of course, using it for a long time as a bass amp, and it being a guitar amp, I pretty much shot the amp, making it a lot more interesting sounding now than I'm sure it was intended to..

Anyway, it worked fine as a bass amp for me for many years, playing early post-punk kinds of stuff. I didn't know any different at the time.

It has two input jacks, a volume, bass, and treble control, and that's it. It's a really basic solid state amp.

I used to use it for playing gigs back in the early 80s in my first band, they always miked it, but eventually I got a real bass amp. These days I only use it for a second keyboard amp for a Farfisa combo organ, and it works ok for that.

I've actually hardly ever used this as an actual guitar amp. To me, it doesn't seem like it has much character to its sound, other than now it has a real fuzzy, always-distorted sound to it, due to years of playing bass through it. But that suits me fine.

This amp is normally very quiet, but every so often it starts making random loud clicks pops buzzes etc, where I think it's going to blow up, but if you turn it off and on again a few times, it soon is fine again.

This amp pretty much only has one sound of its own - you have to depend on your instrument and effects boxes to make it sound any different, but that's ok with me.

Reliability : 8
I've been using this amp for over 25 years now, for various things. Mostly I use it now just for practicing, although I have gigged with it as a second keyboard amp. I usually feel like I can depend on it for what I use it for, although like I said, it sometimes has brief noise flare-ups. For a long time it did this a *lot* and so I stopped using it at all, but eventually started using it again. It seems to have mellowed out a bit in its old age..

I've been playing mostly bass for over 25 years. I normally play through either an old Peavey TNT 150, or my recently-acquired dream amp, a Peavey BASS head playing through a giant Peavey 18" cab.

If this amp were lost or stolen, I wouldn't be crushed, but it would be a sort of sad, nostalgic loss, since it was my first amp!

I do like its small size and its ease of use - it's a great little no-nonsense amp. I use it a lot to test things out on quickly because it's just always there ready to go for me.

This is a vintage solid state amp with only Bass, Treble, Volume, and two input jacks. I've had this amp for about two years now and I don't really like it. I don't know why your ampeg does, but mine doesn't distort at all when cranked so that's not to great. I'll have to give this amp a 2 only because of the condition. I bought this very used so it doesn't work right.

Sound Quality : 2
I'm using a Jackson PS1 with stock Jackson pickups, a Hornet Explorer with EMG 81's, and a Gibson les paul with stock pickups. I have a Digitech RP1 in between, always hooked up. This pedal is pretty good if you like the threshold of your notes to last 2 seconds and the distortion to be less distorted than it turned off. My music style is mainly the sound of Randy Rhoads, which is 70's heavy metal and classical. I like the amp alot but I just can't stand all the noise. The speaker has three inch long rips in it so the speaker sucks. It has been dropped countless times by SOB who like to see what happens when i'm not looking. This thing pops and crackles so bad that cranked it's almost louder than my guitar. It doesn't distort at all. This thing might not be so bad if I could get the electrical cleaned, redone, and better pedals but since I can't at the moment I give this a 2.

Reliability : 10
Besides from the noise this amp does work very well in loudness and reliability. I've used it in a gig and had no problem with anything. The nice thing about it is it has a 20ft cable unlike the 6ft ones on most amps. There are no tubes sadly so I don't get that sound or hassle.

Never used.

I've only been playing five years, I'm 16 and I need a new amp. If this amp was stolen I would be incredibly pissed. I can't afford a new amp and I bought it so I shouldn't have to live without it. I doubt I'd get another one, I would save up for a 1959 SLPX instead. Besides from mid the amp doesn't really need anything else to be good enough.

I have absolutely no idea when the amp was made... but im assuming at least 20 years or older. mine has a volume, treble, and bass control, which is "limiting" nowadays, but you can just use pedals and effects for everything else you want. it has everything i need it for.

Sound Quality : 10
i have a gibson les paul, and an old school danelectro, both which sound fantastic through it. i play from jazz fusion, to muddy blues solos, to alternative, and this amp suits everything i want, both clean and distorted. i found it a bit hard at a high gain to get a "perfect" sound, but im not a super high gain freak anyway, and the amp has a beautiful natural distortion at high volume anyway. clean its as good as anything ive ever heard. honestly.

Reliability : 9
ive had it for a few days... so i have no idea but the thing has been through a war before me so i assume it is a beast

never talked to them

for 70 bucks this amp is a STEAL... it really does sound fantastic.

Not sure when this one was made, but I suspect the mid 70's or so. The amp has basically Vol. Treble, and Bass controls. Oh, and a power switch too! :-) The amp itself is roughly 30 pounds, not too light, not too heavy, and feels very sturdy. I wish this had reverb, but I can use my effects for that I guess. It is all solid state, and has a good bit of power. Like the first reviewer, when I turn this baby up about 1/2 way, I get an unbelieveable sweet overdrive that is just killer!

Sound Quality : 10
I origionally planned to use this amp as a backup, but am reconsidering for a gigging unit (mic'd of course). I am currently using a Line 6 Flextone Duo, but I like the sound of this better! I use mainly a heavily modified Fender Standard Strat with Lace Sensor "Holy Grail" vintage singles in the neck and mid, and a Duncan "Hotrails" in the bridge. I also use a Parker P-38 through it, and the Piezo's sound really nice! It has a nice smooth jazzy tone to it, and the clean tones are just wonderful. When I crank up the vol, to get the overdrive, it's just like having any style blues driver pedal, etc... I just wish there were a way to channel switch into that, but hey, what can you expect? I especially like the way the amp is nearly dead silent until you are playing. I have never had an amp before that was as quiet, and I love it! Definately a recording amp too! I took the front off the amp to inspect the speaker, and there was a little tear in the suspension, so I might repair or replace, but I was very impressed with the way the cabinet reflected the sound of just tapping on the cone. Very good projection, and natural echo. I traded an unused Squire 7 string for it, and I feel I got the better end of the deal! (I only paid $99 for the guitar at a sale at Guitar Center!)

Reliability : 8
Well, I haven't really had a lot of time to check it out, but it's been around probably 30 years already, so what does that tell you? Plus, there are no tubes, so I won't have to worry about those going bad! I'd say this thinug is built extremely well, and would definately last for many years to come! The cabinet also has a solid back, so the structure is extremely stable. I am rating 8 because I haven't had it all that long. I'm sure a few months of hard use will get it a 10!

Customer Support : No Opinion
Have never dealt with them, and in fact this was my very first Ampeg product. Any repairs needed I would probably do myself, but I'm sure they would be good to deal with.

Overall Rating : No Opinion
I have been playing for 15 years and I have had several guitars and amps in my posession, but I think the Ampeg G-100 is one of the best investments I have made so far. It only cost me $99 sure, but in terms of sound, I like the simplicity of the amp, and the tone it gives me. I like to make sure I have consistant sound, with the ability to diversify my rig should I need to in a hurry (during a gig if an amp goes down), and so I mainly keep all my effects (reverbs, chorus, dist, etc...) programmed into a foot controlled unit, so I can swap back and forth between amps/PA (if need be) and keep relatively the same tone. I have a Line 6 that does 16 different amp models, and I can't seem to get just a good clean, natural tone out of that thing to save my life. I will never buy another Line 6 after hearing this simple, vintage Ampeg. It is the answer to my needs, and I will be purchasing more Ampeg gear in the future! I had no idea these amps could sound as nice as they do! If it were lost, I'd probably hit every used music shop I could find to get another, and maybe get two! In fact, if anyone has one they don't like, email me! I do wish it had the onboard reverb, but to keep everything consistant in my rig, it is not really necessary for the amp to have it. On a final note, I just have to give it up for Ampeg, as this is a basic S.S. no-reverb amp, and it has bell-like crisp tones with a nice warm bottom end. The only thing that would make this amp perfect, would be to have a gain control that produced the same sound as turning it up 1/2 way, and then add it to a 2nd switched channel. Tonally, and physically, this amp is now my #1 player, and I would be deeply saddened should anything ever happen to it. If you find one, it probably wont be expensive, but I highly reccommend picking it up!

This amp was made in 1976 (according to date codes within). It may be from a different year the one in the first review here because mine does not have the "speaker out" jack that he mentions.

This is a one channel solid state amp that is very basic (volume, treble, bass controls only) but it has a wonderful, warm clean sound and plenty of volume. No reverb or tremolo, etc.

Sound Quality : 7
This is a very good amp for clean guitar tone. Crisp, clear, and punchy. Lots of headroom at higher volumes. A 10" CTS speaker in a closed back combo cabinet with a ported baffleboard. Very warm lows and crisp, clear highs. I've been using two Stratocasters (one with average output pickups, one with high output pickups) and a Guild T-250 (tele style) with very high putput DiMarzio pickups. All these guitars get a great clean sound from this amp. The higher output the pickups have, the punchier the attack of the note is.

Another reason I think this G-100 is different from the first reviewer is that I don't think this amp distorts well at all. Maybe his design was a better one from another year. But I'll certainly keep it as a "clean" guitar amp and I wouldn't hesitate recording jazz, country, or clean rhythm or lead parts with it. I give it a "10" for its clean tone and a "2" for its distorted tone.

Reliability : 10
I've looked inside and it doesn't seem that much could go wrong with this amp. I own two other Ampegs (GU-12 & VT-40) and it looks as if it was built as well as my other Ampegs. I think of this G-100 more as a recording amp than a gigging amp.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Have never had to deal with the Ampeg people.

Overall Rating : 10
Overall rating: I give it a "10" for straight ahead clean no frills sound. I've been playing 26 years now. I own Fender, Ampeg, Gibson, and no name brand tube amps, 2 Strats, a Rickenbacker 330, a Guild T-250, and some acoustic guitars. I chose to buy this amp because for $108 it was worth a try and I'm not sorry I bought it. I've grown to trust Ampeg's tone and quality. If it were stolen or lost I would buy another.

This appears to be an early 7o's amp with just the basics which are volume, treble, bass, and plenty of "kick ass!" It has a speaker out jack which I had to replace. This is a transister amp and the only transister amp I have ever heard sound simular to a tube amp when cranked. It has an original 10" speaker which breaks up very nicely with the volume around 5 or 6.
I basicaly look for just the main features in any amp...volume, treble, and bass. The model number, G-100 might mean 100 watts but I really doubt it although it is much louder than my Crate 25.

Sound Quality : 10
I use "Stratalikes" which I build with emg pickups and several guitars with Dimarzio's and Schaller pickups which all respond differently to the amp but yet keep me quite pleased with the sound.
I have five tube amps and six tranny amps and I find myself using this Ampeg in my studio more and more because it just sounds so fine for a little amp. No noise whatsoever.
My playing styles range from very easy listening, blues, rock, jazz, to metal maniac beyond thunderdome! It suits me fine.

Reliability : 10
I have had this amp for over a year and find it to be very reliable but would under no circumstance do a gig without a backup!
This amp looked nearly new when I found it in June of 1999 so was never played much or had a loving owner.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I have never dealt with the company. If I need repairs myself or my tech does them.

Overall Rating : 10
I have been playing all sorts of guitars and styles for over thirty-eight years now and have enjoyed every minute, hour, day, month, and year of doing so.
If this amp were stolen or lost I probably wouldn't replace it for the simple fact that you can't replace what lost, just the space.
There is no comparison. Any amp has a home with me. You need to find what an amp can do then put it to use.
I chose this amp because I am always looking for a deal. This one has proven to be very good to me.
