Production year: '70 to '72. Bought it used and relying on the shop's words.
Specifications: Two 12 inch speakers, 6 12AX7s, 2 6L6s, 500 volts of beef in the power transformer, 8 ohm load handling and an 8 ohm extension jack, "external amp" jack that supposed to make it function as an extension speaker (don't quote that, running on some pal's advice) and 30 pure class A watts.
There are four inputs, normal and bright for channels one and two. Channel one has all three effects (spring reverb, optical tremolo/vibrato circuit.) Channel two is quite a bit louder (my guess is the lack of effects) and has a different character than channel one. Both channels have independent bass, treble and volume dials as well as Ultra High and Ultra Low switches.

The thing is unjustly loud in all its class A glory. It retains it's tonal qualities at the high volumes as well as some lower volumes (within reason.) I use this in my basement as it's too mighty for my room. It can shake a house. Loads of valv-o-licious JUICE just to my taste.

I could whine about a lack of an effects loop or I could reach puberty and plug straight in.

I did buy this used but the original owner was a king among engineers and did two significant upgrades to the amp. He replaced the original felt cover with the blue/black checkered tolex and did an amazing, professional quality job. Second, he added a foot switch for the vibrato/tremolo circuit to avoid amp moving-over-to-and-turning-knobs situations in the middle of gigs. The speakers are not original (Fender Music Company or some) but they sound great anyways. Reverb was dead when I bought it and I don't care enough to fix it at the moment as I have a Holy Grail sitting around due to my last amp's reverb tanking (pun intended.)

I play a Peavey JF-2 (Jazz Fusion 2 AKA ES-335 w/ Bigsby) hot rodded with Bill Laurence L560s. This thing pretty much IS clean headroom. I'd refer to it as a Twin Reverb incarnate placed in the body of a Russian prizer fighter. It's got some knock out punches and beautiful clean headroom. It won't get to the 85 watt level of the Twin Reverb nor the pro tier clean headroom but for 350 bucks I have not a thing to cry about. There's more than enough clean for me.

This stomps, trods and tramples upon my previous amp (Peavey Classic 30 which is good in its own right but nothing like this.) FYI, the Classic 30 has little clean headroom out of the box.

You NEED an overdrive or distortion if you want to drive this. It will not drive itself alone in any logical situation. Even though clean, this baby gets a lot of different sounds just from its two channels, normal and bright inputs, ultra low/high switches and a few other knob turns. Even more fun arises when you hook the overdrive/distortion into the different inputs to hear the tonal variety.

It's receptive to every pedal I have thrown at it and is pretty standalone once you have an overdrive or distortion pedal (or reverb pedal.)

Every combo amp wants to grow up to be a large, 2 by 12 tube amplifier. This thing is corn fed and muscular. You'd hurt yourself before you hurt it within reason. It may not be created from the remains of tank plating nor used as the brick layer for a house (Boss effects pedals) but any reasonable accident not involving a sledgehammer wouldn't hurt this thing.

Ampeg is lost. They don't even acknowledge this model on their website anymore. Customer support is www.Google.com.

Overall Rating : 10
I've got a reasonable amount of pedals, my single, versatile guitar and I'd be ashamed if this amp was shot. I'd feel stupid if I somehow lost something that weighs sixty pounds and is the size of a gigantic suitcase. I've played a decent amount of tube amps and love the sound of this thing especially for the money.

Bottom line: Forgotten amp of a bygone era as it's swamped in the storm of other good amps. Take advantage of this wallflower if you see one. They go for a decent price and sound great.

Mine's from the early 70s & extremely versatile w/out being goofy. Two channels each w/two inputs & Ampeg's great verb. Tremelo & true vibrato avail. on one channel. Both channels have treble & bass rocker swithes for more oomph. But even for an amp powered by a pair of 6L6s this amp has A LOT of OOMPH for it's wattage (which I'd guess is about 30-40 W) thru the 2 12" speakers. I use an A-B switch for channel switching & it works peachy. Build quality is fantastic.

The amp sorta defines "punch" w/ cleans that are soulful & defined, but w/ a greater bottom end. It's got so much headroom and volume that a pedal in front is the best bet for driving it. Which works very well. The key to good distorted tone is a good clean tone. You get always get dirt from a pedal, but no pedal can get ya cleans from from an overdriven amp w/ little headroom.

The lush reverb is why is justly Ampeg famous for their 'verb, simply the best ever. Trem is even better than on the earlier blue check era ampegs & that's saying a lot!

Amp is perfect for kicking out Exile on Main St era stones type tones, but also kills fer country rock & is a blues beast w/ a decent pedal up front. Sounds great w/ all my arsenal, my acous-elec., single coil slab, p-90 gretsch, & hollow body gretsch w/ humbuckers.

Only time I ever use a different amp is when I'm playing small rooms as a duo/trio, cuz this Gemini is just a bit loud for small rooms. Otherwise, this is my go to.

Reliability : 10
The build quality is xlnt & this thing is still kicking & ticking perfectly with hardly any maintenance after about 40 years!

the real ampeg, is, most unfortunately, long gone.

I've been a huge fan of the blue check era ampegs for decades & have several, but once I got this post blue check ampeg, it's been my go to amp for louder gigs. One of the best all 'round amps ever made IMHO, and I've played about every major vintage & boutique amp in my 30yrs of playing. Just an amazing rig! Fer a long while I'd wanted Ampeg's V4 or V22s, but they cost more & weigh more. I think think the Gemini GV-22 is great tradeoff for the weight & price, w/out sacrificing anything tonally, just a bit o 'vol. & I don't need 4X10"s anymore!

I have 2 - one from 69, one from 73. Some cosmetic differences, one reverb locks down one doesn't, otherwise the same. Eminence or CTS speakers, two 6L6 tubes with LOTS of power on the grids, two channels, one with reverb and effects, one without. Swithcable tremelo AND vibrato. Read that again please, class - this amp has BOTH tremelo and vibrato. Unfortunately, they don't work on one amp.
Lot's of oomph from those two 6L6 tubes, I use Ruby STR's in there because I think they may be the only thing that can handle that much power - there's almost 500 volts on the plates of those 6L6 tubes.

Sound Quality : 9
I use mine with a Roland pedalboard and either a tele or a Les Paul. The sound is very clear, and being classic Ampegs, there is NO distortion available on the amp at all, unless of course you decide to crank it all the way, not a good idea. Lot's of really powerful bass, good clear highs, this amp has punch like nobody's business.

Reliability : 9
These are now 30+ year old amps, but they are built the classic Ampeg way - very heavy, very strong. The tubes were replaced and the caps have all been redone. There's PLENTY of space in there for redoing the goofy cap setup, and you can add a bit extra filtering if you really want, but I don't think it's necessary.

Unfortunately, there are some really bizarro parts in there, a funky wad of orange stuff that has eight leads coming out of it and that has BOTH caps and resistors inside. I have NO idea how to replace one of those, and I suspect that it's the part that has killed the trem in one of my amps. But then, I don't really use the trem much, so it's no biggie. You do have to get monster size 6L6 tubes for these, the voltages are crazy!

I would absolutely use one of these without backup, there's nothing that can kill these guys besides floods and fires.

One other concern - the tube sockets are mounted to the pc boards, something to consider with the amount of heat being generated.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Non-existant, I do my own work and it's not too bad to work on these puppies. Good caps and good tubes and look for burned up resistors. I would NOT want to replace a transformer in one of these. In fact, I doubt a replacement could be found.

Overall Rating : 10
I've been playing for ten years. I also own a Super-Reverb, a Gibson Skylark, a Harmony 420, and a Supro Tremo-verb. If this amp were stolen or lost, I would just try to find another, I guess, or something similar - there are LOTS of lesser-known Ampeg models out there. I love the power and cleanliness of the tone, I hate the weight.
