FYI-These Amps where made between 1972 to 1974 by Yorkville Sound, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and assembled in Buffalo then Batavia NY. They were the first Traynor series of solid state amps manufactured for Baldwin, in Canada they said Yorkville Sound on then. Yorkville still have the Schematics for these but you have to email Yorkville sound on old amp archives, they send you an Adobe PDF diagram. You can buy original speakers still throught the Yorkville Dealers as I have been told by a local repairman here. They are around the $70.00 each I believe. I bought my Amp new in 1973 Sonax 730G with 2- 10" speakers for $265 Canadian, they built 720G 20Watts, 730G 30Watts, 750G 50Watts, 775G 75Watts, 550B 50Watts Bass Amp. All info on Traynor Yorkville History Site. I guess it is hard to find info in the U.S. on these under Baldwin name. The amp was great at the time it was made had enoth power and effects then, now it is a antique with a great distinct sound.

Sound Quality : 10
They are really clear sounding, I used mine for a Bass for some time, probadly di some damge to it . It has a special clear sound of its own. But Reverb is too sensitive.

Reliability : 8
Originaly they were produced with a 2,200 MFD Capacitors on the main power board circuit, mine had 1,000 MFD installed one shorted burnt the diodes out, and fryed the circuit board. I replaced the diodes and rebuilt the circuit board, replaced the Capacitors with 3,300 MFD's, cleaned up the sound. But you have to watch using a Bass on them it viberates the circuit boards, originaly they were cold solder mine shorted open and burn't 3 times. I had to resolder all the printed circuits, last time it lasted for 25years. But it started to act up back a few months ago so I'm still trying to repair it, hard to find original parts of same value.I changed all the capacitors and power transistors, working on all other transistors to replace at present. For 34 years not to bad a product.

Customer Support : 9
Yorkville Sound seems to be friendly on any help or info they have. Repair people hard to find that want to repair this type of amp. Repair mostly myself, self taught over the years. I use to have a good repairman but he is allergic to solder smaell it makes him sick. So he looks at it and orders parts, I still have to install and test out his theorys. No warranty needed when new just after that.

Overall Rating : 9
I've been playing for 40 years, If I could I would buy a new one. But that deal went by 34 years ago. They only made then for 3 years. I should have bought 2 I guess. The original speakers blew about 7 years ago so I replaced then with repalcement type higher wattage. I noticed other people had issues of were to get help about repairs and info on these amps, I hope this helps them out.

Sound Quality : 8
old hagstrom guitar and a kay bass
it seems noisy and loud enough to piss your off your neighbors.
I really need some speakers that will do this amplifier some justice.
sounds that it can make. well inside this huge room well sometimes I set the reverb tank on the outside of this amp for It is too close and I'm useing springs out of lighters to suspend it. This amp is a keeper and I need some speakers. It is all clean until it gets distorted. the distortion is destructive. It is only supposed to be clean.

Reliability : 7
works well
not an amp for gigs just a warm home tone
speakers are really ragged out and repaired but not clean.
solid state

AKA Baldwin Professional, probably ca. late .60s. lots of neat colored buttons to change the tone to thin and twangy to nice and fat.
Channel one has two inputs that I'm currently using for my keybards. It has bass, treble, volume, tremolo (speed + intensity) and reverb.
Channel 2 also has two inputs and has controls for volume, bass & treble

Sound Quality : 7
When I use it on my guitars, I plug either my Epiphone Les Paul, my Jay Turser Gibsonesque or my Strat Squier. It's somewhat noisy, but coupled with a Vox wah-wah, there's not a whole heck of a lot I can't do with it, and it makes my cheap guitars sound good!

Reliability : 4
It was working great for years, but in my last move, the movers dropped it, and now it has a nasty short that can give you a buzz if you touch it. I haven't been able to find the short or someone in the Brooklyn, NY area who knows enough about it to fix it for me.

I've been playing on and off since I was 15, so make it 30 years. I have a Fender Frontman and a Crate Vintage Club Series tube amp. If it were stolen, I'd smile to think of the shock the putz will get when he plugs it in for the first time and then touches it. I love it because I can plug both keyboards and two of my guitars it it all at the same time. I just wish I could find someone in my area who could fix the short without bankrupting me.

This amp was probably manufactured around 1968 and has not been used in at least 25 years. Its a highly versital unit in that you can get a multitude of sounds. I would say its very simular to a twin reverb but much more mellow. Just messing around with it I get a Chet Sound out of my solid body guitar. It does have 2 channels. I like channel 1 the best, it has the tremello and reverb. Channel 2 has no effects just like the old twin reverb. It also has an extension speaker input which is really neat. Its louder than hell in the house so it should cover any type of gig. It also has the original foot switch.

I play a strat and a tele mostly. I will use this amp just for the hell of it on my next gig. Right now I'd say its probably one of the best jazz amps you will find. I dont play jazz but play a little Chet Atkins stuff. My main music in classic country and rock-a-billy and old rock. I went thrue all the potts and cleaned the guts up and it is quiet as a mouse. As far as I know this thing has a very fine clean sound, like I said a little to jazzy for me. I will do a follow up when I give it the real test.

I have no clue. I do remember some lead players using these things back in the old days and they were most realiable amps at the time. I must state that this amp was in an attic for over 25 years. I wont rate it except to say I never knew of any problems. Its built like a tank and looks very 60ish, if you get my drift.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I dont believe the company even remembers making these amps. I guess Baldwin is still making organs. Dont have a clue. I believe they quit making them because they just couldnt get any market share from Fender.

Overall Rating : 8
I've been a lead guitarist since 1957 so I can actually play through any amp or use any guitar and make it sound good....please dont think I'm bragging. Anyone who has studied as long as I have can do the same thing. I've played almost every type of music, but mainly country, old rock and a major rock-a-billy addict. I use Fender Strats, Teles, Peavey and Gibsons. I have tons of amps,Fender Quad Reverb, Peavey duel 12, Crate Vintage club along with smaller Peaveys and Crates. I actually like them all. The Balwin is probably the rarest along with the Quad Reverb. These amps are quite heavey and I struggle hauling them around. I would be extremely pissed if any of my stuff were stolen. I would probably sell everything and just get a Peavey Classic 50 head and plug it into my 15" scorpian one of these days. Mean while I will let you know how this old Baldwin works on the band stand.

These were made around 1968 by the Baldwin piano and organ company. Has a very distinct Sixties/Early Seventies jukebox style with blue side panels and lots of shiny metal. Format is like a Fender Twin Reverb, but probably less power (the catalog says 100 watts but the power transformer is tiny and I really doubt it actually hits 50. The amp has a series of gaily colored buttons that change the overall sound of the amp from a piercing trebly little thing to a big muffy jazz box. Probably the grandfather of today's simulation amps. Pretty successful considering what they had to work with in those days. Frequency response does not go very low...the bass end of the sound is barely below the midrange. My amp is noisy, with a hiss that would prevent this amp from being a good recording amp. It's heavy and probably unbreakable. Except for... The output design is very similar to a Rhodes piano...VERY similar. It
used germanium power transistors that you can't get anymore. I have converted mine to use MJ14004 silicon transistors, rated for 250 watts each, and there are six of them in the circuit, so I don't think it's gonna break anytime soon. I'll send you a schematic of the output transistor conversion if you want. I'm hp23@mindspring.com for the time being, or just have some engine look for me. My name is Hilary Paprocki. It's a cool-looking amp but overall don't pay too much for one because it is early solid-state and none of those amps were really very good.

I bought this solid state amplifier at a pawn shop last year. It's probably about 15-20 years old. I wonder if it was manufactured by Baldwin, the piano maker or another company of that name? It has two channels, each with two inputs. Channel one has a tremolo effect with two switches (speed, intensity) and the best reverb I have ever heard on an amplifier. Both of these effects have jacks for footswitches, but I have never used them. Each channel has dials for treble and bass.

When it's working well, it sounds awesome. I can get tones ranging from mellow to growling to beautifully hollow distortion (with my distortion pedal).

Reliability : 2
Help! If anybody can give me suggestions on how to fix this amplifier, please, please, please email me. I don't want to have to stop using it, but I can't play it the way I would like.
I don't have too much trouble with it until the volume knob gets over 4. And then it sounds OK for a while. But as I play it the sound quality gradually decreases until eventually it is completely unplayable. It's not a tube amp so the problem isn't old tubes. I think that I might have damaged the amp with my distortion pedal, but the sound isn't as poor when I begin using it. Like I said, the quality degrades while playing especially at high volumes.
The second channel has a much cleaner quality tone than the first, but without the reverb or termolo. The first channel is connected to a box labeled "Baldwin Panoramic Tone Unit" which I'm assuming creates the tremolo and reverb. Channel 1 doesn't function when the box is unplugged, but channel 2 does.
I know nothing about amplifiers and haven't been able to find any information about repairing solid state amps. If anybody has any ideas I would be very happy to here them.

Overall Rating : No Opinion
This would be an excellent amplifier if it's condition were in top shape.
