I play keyboards, guitar and bass. I mainly used this amp/mini pa for keyboards. I found the EQ on the amp to be completely non musical. What's the point of having a ton of features if the amp doesn't sound good? Since it's a Behringer piece I'm sure it has all cheap components.

Eh mine worked but mine wasn't really taken out of the house much at all. I didn't really care that it worked considering it sounds like **** with keyboards.

Ton of features but it doesn't matter because it has a very non musical sound to it. I tried and tried to use the eq on it to no avail. I bought a Peavey KB4 to replace it and I'm much, much happier.

Bought this refurbished from Guitar Center in February 2007. Designed as for vocals and keyboards, it doesn't add or subtract much, so I put my vocals through a Digitech VX300 and it works very well. When I first brought this in to play with my basement band, two of the guys made several of the common anti-Behringer comments. Gradually, though, they have all come to respect it so much that they have all run their mics through it (4 total). At that level, I can be clearly heard, but the fourth channel mic has to be set pretty high to be really heard. (Hey, what do you want for $160!) Oh, and we also have the CD player plugged into it for the "new song singalongs". So five inputs and quite good performance.

:

No sound effects, just straight, true amplification. Each of the four channels has an "effects" knob but since I set my effect levels on my Digitech, and since the other guys don't have effects,I can't give any experiences. The eq features low, low mid, high mid and high, and are relatively effective in that respect.
Very quiet, even silent, using long mic cords and nothing else on the line. High levels of treble can add some hiss, as can multi-plugs into a power strip.
I have played guitar through it, and it sounds decent, but to get sound variation I prefer my Crate with 20 settings. Vocally, it works for everything from Marley to Collective Soul to CSN to Cream.

After 20 years of on-and-off playing/singing solo, I joined my current group around 3 years ago, playing together once a week. The kx1200 has been a trouper. It does what it is supposed to do, nothing fancy, but we don't really need anything more. The price (low) to quality/reliability/volume (high) ratio is excellent, as comparably-powered/featured amps are often two or three times higher.

Update to my previous posting: Fixng one KX1200 problem: I found that the electrolytic capacitors can fail on noisy AC lines. Strange noises I experiences were cleaned up by replacing ALL original electrolytics with good quality ones. I hope this helps someone out. It is not an expensive fix parts-wise.
Good luck.

be careful using this amp on AC lines that have other items running. mine acted up after playing a a fall fair....a remote receptable on a pole serving several users...within minutes my amp sounded noisy. The PA amp ICs seem to hold up well under stress but not the capacitors.

I use my 2 amps through my studio line conditioner. I would not depend on them for use on stage. I prefer to use a Peavey KB4 when playing in public with it's headphone monitor feature "(great for in-ear monitoring) and other features.
My 2 KX1200's are happy to stay home and give me stereo sound to my guitars, bass, keyboards, etc.

Built 2004, 4 channels (mono) , master vol, efx loop, headphone jack, master EQ, each channel has efx send. I needed a small powerful KEYBOARD amp. For the price this can't be beat, so its hard to find a lot wrong with this due to the 'bang for the buck ' factor. HOwever, it would be nice to have stereo inputs since most Keyboards are stereo with sometype of stereo field output on the sound of the EFX from the keyboard. So , I often use all 4 channels using my workstation and a Wavestation stereo outs to make sure I get the 'whole sound' of the keyboards. This thing is plenty loud for a small group. It is noisey. Mostly used for garage band jam.... and then sound reinforcement for practice. Didn't pay 500.00 for a 'name' unit, don't expect a lot but got plenty good enough!

I wanted the 15" for the 'big synth' sound, which it delivers, but then it also 'woofs out' on the lowend of a Rhodes sound and low B3 type sounds. As I stated earlier , it is noisey , but not obtrusively so. ... I wouldn't push this amp to distortion, like 'gimme some lovin' B3 ..... it would blow out the windows in the house. Best bet , would be to use an amp simulator as stated by someone else above. I imagine it would work very well with a ZOOM, Digitech, POD, or other simulator. Then this would be the bargain of the century? - solid output , clean sound.

This is my second Behringer product .... that doesn't mean their customer support is great..... however, 'get a grip' - how much did you pay for a brand new amplifier ?? even if it fails in a year .... SO WHAT ! ... you can buy a new amp head on E-bay and use the speakers ..... the cabs seem solid.

I'm an 'old skool' dude - 'don't get around much anymore' - played professionally long ago for more years than I care to admit with minor league success, but I still love to play rock, blues, and phunk for my own enjoyment. I've had some 'major' equipment in the past - big $'s I payed. However, now , I just need basic sound reinforcement. This amp meets the need I have for my keyboards, rack gear and workstations. I do not use this for guitar amplification , but with the right simulator it may be very good.
If stolen - probably buy another, just a good value.
Wish inputs were stereo - I could probably use 'Y' cords , but it would be nice to have right and left input for each channel with a stereo link capability like the Alesis Sumo. This shouldn't add much cost.

The amp is the right size & power output to take anywhere for PA use when I need more than a guitar amp. I have 2. I play anything from Bach to Rock on guitar and other instruments. It was made in 2002. I wanted a one piece unit so I could set up quickly for some functions rather than use a powere mixer and speakers on stands. I bought mine due to a tight budget at the time. If funds permitted I would bought a higher end product for my needs.
My 1st unit finally acted up after an outdoor concert. It started making crackling sounds and emits a tone pitch after 30 seconds warm up. If anyone knows what parts were replaced or repaired in their KX1200 I'd like to share information. I'm an electronics tech but don't have the schematic. A quick look at the circuitry showed it uses 2 LM3886T IC's for output chips. I suspect an RC ocscillation is the problem. I did put more silicone heat compound on the output chips and tightened the screw in each one against the heatsink (they were not tight).

the unit sounded very clean with my guitar, bass or keyboard. It is best to use an amp modeller/simulator for guitar to even out the sound (it is mentioned in their manual...if you don't have a manual, it can be downloaded from www.behringer.com).

My 1st XK1200 last one year before the noise problem. I got the second for a very good price because the dealer wanted to get rid of any Behringer stock (claiming both he & customers could not get service or responses from Behringer). The inside design is clean but I have not had the time to back-engineer the circuitry to come up with some mods to overcome complaints mentioned on this site. I'm willing to share info to help keep KX1200's reliable.

I've played for well over 40 years, most of my current instruments are Fender. I wanted a pair of KX1200's for stage work but I just have one clean sounding unit and another that sounds like an old fashioned tea kettle "whistling at the boil". The LM3886T chips are supposed to be "indestructable" according to the manufacturers specs for them (Behringer mentions that).
Let's share some info and make the KX1200 a "reliable" amp! Feel free to write me.

What you put in is what you get out. Like a good PA, it doesn't add to or subtract from the tone of the input signal. As such, it makes a great amp for a modeler like a POD or V-amp.
Reliability

IMPORTANT: Whatever you do, DO NOT connect a cable carrying phantom power to the XLR direct (line) output of this amp. A "professional" sound crew did so to mine at a show in the Pocono's when the amp was less than one month old. The 48 volt phantom power fed directly into the power amp of the KX1200, and among other damage, smoked (yes, real smoke) the 15" driver. Other than that, the amp has been very reliable.

Behringer made good on the repair, but it took well over a month. The amp was destroyed when it was shipped back to me (a factory packaging issue, not the fault of the amp or UPS). They ended up sending me a new amp.

I started the guitar and the drums last year and I had the idea to come up with a band
I already had the 1200 so I have to use it, I also bought a UB2442FX-PRO EURORACK 24 channel Mixer, plugged in 3 micros, 1 bass guitar Yamaha, 1 acoustic guitar Yamaha LSX-400 handcrafted, a Fender Telecaster US, a ESP/LTD KH-603 signature series, , 2x BOSS GT-6 Multi effect processor for guitar and started a band
I mean it is not the greatest thing, my phones sucks und anyway we are roox but I promise u if u are using this thing for practising, what else do u need and who can beat that price?
And the really good thing on this amp is, if u are on stage then u can use it as a monitoring for bass ore drum player
The next thing I gonna do is, to run it with a AKG
DRUM-MIC-SET
i rank it as a 10 bcause of the price the power the really good sound if a the boss gt-6 multi effect processor 4 guitars, that u can use it as monitoring ore also if u have a bithday party and u wanna sing and play accustic

Bought this Behringer KX-1200 from Musician's Friend in January 2005. The unit features 120 watts, 1x15" woofer, 1x5" mid and a horn tweeter. each of the four channels has one 1/4" input, and Channel 1 has an XLR mic input (can only use the 1/4" or XLR, not both at once). There are also a variety of input/output options, including: XLR balanced line out, "main" line level out (1/4"), effects loop and a pair of stereo RCA input/outpus. The only jack on the front panel is a 1/4" headphone terminal.
Controls include a master volume and 4-band EQ. As well, each channel has a gain control and an FX/monitor level control. This allows you to control the "wet" level of the effects unit patched into the effects loop, OR you can use it to control the level of each channel going into a monitor amp (using the output of the effects loop only).
I purchased this to use as an all-in-one for bass and PA. Although I was able to get a pretty good EQ setup for my bass (bass, high-mid and highs at 3 o'clock on the dials, and low-mid all the way off), the tone would definitely benefit from some sort of outboard pre-amp! As for PA use, I ran my laptop (MP3's) into one of the 1/4" channel inputs and set the amp's EQ flat (12 o'clock on all pots). I had as good a canned music sound as I have ever gotten from a guitar, bass or keyboard amp! In fact, all frequency responses were very smooth AND the clarity rivaled that of a good PA system. Mids and highs were clear and distinct, and the bass thumped nicely without getting overly muddy.
Plenty of headroom for most gigs for both bass and PA use. Not quite as much volume as a dedicated bass amp for my bass guitar, but a decent bass pre-amp should cure that.
The only real shortcoming is the lack of EQ on each channel. To use it for both bass and PA at the same time, you would, once again, need to add a bass pre-amp.
Sound Quality
:
9
As noted above, GREAT PA sound and a good bass sound. For use as an all-in-one generic amp, this thing does a great job! The amp maintains excellent sound at high volume settings (channel gain and main volume) with little or no distortion. I have yet to set the channel gain and the main volume controls above 12 o'clock (halfway) for the bass, as halfway up has been plenty of volume for rehearsals. That being said, one shortcoming of the KX-1200 is the white noise generated by each channel and the main amp. Although the noise is relatively low in live settings (imperceptible once you start playing or pop in a CD), it is probably enough to keep this from being a legitimate recording amp for keys or bass.
The 4-band EQ is definitely set up for vocals and PA work. If using this primarily for keys or PA, you should be very happy with the EQ voicing.

Can't give much of an opinion on its long-term durability. I've had the unit for two weeks. However, I can update some info noted in other reviews. Apparently, Behringer was paying attention to the complaints of poor packaging. MF is currently shipping the unit in a "box packed in a box". Yep, the foam corners are still breaking and falling into the bottom of the inner carton. However, the four corrugated layers did a nice job of protecting the amp in transit. No nicks, dings or scars.
I also read several reviews decrying blown power sections. To test this on my unit, I left the amp on overnight a few times to see if the power section would have any blowouts. As well, I drove the amp at stage volume (OK, a small stage) for a couple of hours at practice. No problems at all. In their defense, I've had great luck with the other couple of Behringer items that I've owned. However, due to the variety of problems experienced by other reviewers, I'll sure be careful to have other options available in case I do have an issue.

I've had no contact with Behringer. They do, however, have a pretty nice web page. In fact, this was where I found out that the KX-1200 was being discontinued in 2005 (thus the deep discount from MF, $200 down from $300). Looks like they will be dropping the current line and replacing it with a NICE LOOKING new line of keyboard amps after NAMM. The new line will look considerably more modern (they are shorter and have the rounded front of the Peavey BAM, Ampeg PortaBass and Warwick bass combos).
I've purchase three Behringer items from MF, and had great success with all three. As well, I've always had great success with MF any time I have a problem with an item.

As noted, I'm using the KX-1200 as both a PA and a bass amp. After several years with a full-stack Peavey bass amp and a full rack-mounted PA, I found it was time to reduce my gear load. At the time of purchase, my primary interest was in a Carvin unit of the same type (can't remember the model, but it's the green combo with 3 channels and 100 watts). Unfortunately, the Carvin was exactly twice as much as the Behringer. I've gotta admit, so far I've been very pleased with the Behringer and the $200 still in my pocket. For those of you with a small garage band, this amp can handle inputs from four different instruments or mics. At $200, I could see this being a very efficient and cost effective way to amplify an entire band during rehearsals! For an Avereage Joe weekend gigger, like myself, it carries plenty of options and volume for almost any small or medium gig. Assuming that it holds up under regular use, this should be the last general duty amp I'll ever need.

Because the KX1200 is a mono amp, I had to eventually invest in a second one to suit my stereo needs. The auxillary tape input did a decent job of emulating a psuedo stereo image with particular devices, but the mono speakers did not allow wide enough bandwidth for stereo effects to shine IMHO. In addition, the effects loop is also mono and can dampen stereo effects.
Warts aside, the interface is very practical and the numerous in/outs make both of my KX1200s suited for a variety of my personal applications, e.g., amplifying a Boss DR-5 drum machine/sequencer, Tonelab SE, Tonelab desktop modeler, a cheap Casio CTK-411 Keyboard, an acoustic/electric guitar, and, perhaps one day, my voice(?!).

:

I always keep the EQ on both of my KX1200s flat and use the channel inputs for my various instruments. There is a slight bit of coloration in comparison to other audio reproduction devices in my home. More specifically, the highs are cut and bass is boosted.
Out of my two KX1200s, the oldest one sounds best to me. The newer one seems to have a less resonant bass response and audibly buzzes at higher volumes.
Being a solo home musican for the most part, I have rarely cranked either up to a "gig volume". The few times I have done so, it has been essential to balance the individual channel volumes with the global output levels. Otherwise, the tone becomes very shrill and loses definition with amp modelers or boomy with keyboards and drum machines.
Reliability
:
5
The older KX1200 has survived infrequent voyages to jam sessions and a move between residences in the same town. Otherwise, it has spent the majority of its life nestled next to its evil twin in my practice room.
I refer to my newer KX1200 as its "evil twin" because it seems to have been manufactured in an alternate universe (or sweatshop) where power switches are installed backwards and quality standards have taken a slight dive. If you read the other reviews, consistency in production standards is definitely not Behringer's strongest suit.
Customer Support

I included a little message about the noise on my newer KX1200 with my warranty registration. Though they were somewhat helpful back when the memory battery in my V-AMP2 died, I am not optimistic about receiveing a response this time.

I have looked into other compact PA options with mulit-leveled, full-range speakers and the KX1200 definitely has the best cost to feature ratio on the current market. Still, it would be nice to have a single KX1200 that could produce true stereo sounds ... and more consistent manufacturing standards in the various Behringer production centers throughout Germany and the third world ... but we only get what we pay for, right?

Probably the most unreliable piece of equipment i've ever owned. I used it a total of 4 jobs, and twice it blew out the outputs. They were small venues and the amp was not pushed at all. The second failure also resulted in the 15" driver blowing out. I trashed it after that.

The unreliability of the amp was exceeded only by the unreliability of Behringer customer support. They never responded to multiple e mails. After several phone calls I was told to ship it to New York for repair (approx 500 miles) and unkown costs. Requests for schematic were denied. They said people might use this to find out how Behringer makes such inexpensive products. That's easy..you get what you pay for. In this case this product should not be sold to consumers.

Here is something else I'd like to share. An old musican friend of mine called me a few monthes ago wanting me to play bass in his new group.(I used to play bass for him back in the late 70's.To make a long story short I needed a small bass combo to play my Fender Bass. I auditioned about 12 different combos and finally chose the Ampeg b100r. I was thrilled with the sound and bottom of the Ampeg. However to my suprise the kx1200 was deeper and more powerful when I played the two side by side at home. The kx1200 might be the bass players holy grail everone is talking about.

You've probably read all the specs; 4 channels and an FX loop. The biggest let down is that the AMP is all MONO which is pathetic considereing its designed for keyboards. Only 1 DI output and again, its all MONO. If you want to run your boards in stereo you'll have to use a seperate DI to send to FOH and juse use the amp as a MONO monitor.

Plenty of bottom end and the mids sound great - especially with a Fender Rhodes sound. It had a buzzing noise for about a week and a half but I seem to have blasted it out of existence at a gig last night which really is a bit terrifying. I don't like the idea of having a sporadic buzz in my amp, I'd rather have something that is definately broken that I can take to a repair guy and he'll find right away.

Reliability is terrible. I blew up the first two of these I received. Turns out the DI can't handle fantom power which is rediculous for a DI. There are no warnings in the manual about it and when asked about it the guys at Behringer just said, 'yeah... that should probably be in the manual' Not impressed at all. I'm too scared to use the DI now even without fantom power switched on.

rating is 0 out of 10. if it was stolen, I would send a sympathy card to the thief. The only thing I (intially) liked about it was the sound made by the 3-way speaker. This amp is basically a hoax: if you take it apart, you'll see the cheapest components available were used wherever possible, including the drivers. MOre than likely, I will take the electronics out of the top and use it for an extension cabinet somewhere. If I cant get free warranty work, it will be hard to justify fixing this thing.

I like how you can have independent effects that are not inherent in the amp, it makes life easier if something does go wrong. Four channels is a plus when you use keyboards. The DI out makes life simpler too. I use a simple reverb unit with this system coupled with an enhancer/exciter. it sounds great with the accordion I play. I wish the unit was on wheels, I had to build a small dolly for the rig I have. Also the exterior should have been made of carpet- it's just more "road friendly" than what it comes with.

I felt that with a 15" speaker in it, the lows would be stronger, but maybe it has a smaller magnet than other 15" speakers I've heard. This is why I added the enhancer/exciter which has done the trick. It has great mid response and I like the control of 4 band EQ.

This unit was manufactured in 2002. The main features are: 4-channel (XLR mic input on channel 1), effects/monitor on all four, tape in/out, XLR output of the mix, 4-band equalizer, 120W RMS, 15" woofer, 5" midrange, tweeter, headphone jack. I wish it had a separate XLR output for channel 1 only to allow separate mic/instrument outputs to the sound board. I built a stand so that I can tilt the unit back on stage where I use it as a personal monitor for vocals, acoustic and electric guitar. It has plenty of power for this application.

Mainly I use the unit for vocals and a Taylor 310-CE acoustic guitar. I also use it to amplify my Gibson SG through a Zoom 505-II effects pedal (both clean and distorted). I play contemporary praise/worship music in our church band and in all cases the sound quality is excellent. White noise is practically non-existant but sometimes I do hear a little buzzing from all the fluorescent lights. At home there is no buzzing at all. Since I use this amp as a personal monitor, any variation in sound comes from my effects pedal. There is no distortion at all but I have never pushed the unit to its limits.

The cabinet is very solid but let's face it; at the price I paid ($249 brand new from American Musical) they have to cut corners somewhere. The unit is made in China (like so many things these days) and the pots have plastic shafts but so do the pots on an old Peavy Pacer amp my friend has. It is solid state so there are no tubes to replace. So far I have not had any problems with it.

I chose this amp because it has more features than any other for the same price and I am very happy with other Behringer products I own. One final note; I also play bass guitar and this unit is definitely not a bass amp. I had to max out all the gain settings just to get moderate volume from the passive pickup on my Peavy Patriot. When I tried playing slap style there was no punch at all. Otherwise I think its a great amp.

The KX1200 does have 4 inputs, no channel switching, an effects loop input/output and a headphone jack. It also has XLR in/out and A/V in/out. The best thing about this amp is that it cancels the effect of the Rocky Road's gain problem (see the review on this pedal if you're curious) by using two channels of the PA. I plug direct from my left out and my right out goes through my pedal. If I use input 1 at mid volume and input 2 at mid-low volume, there's no gain change and I get that great Leslie effect. This amp has completely changed who I am as a performer on stage and I am grateful for it. I love the sheer powerhouse of sound this amp puts out. I compared it to the Roland 100 watt keyboard amp, the sounds were similar, but the Roland cost $250 more. Pretty much a no brainer. Of course I wish I had a Yamaha Performance Grand and a Vintage Hammond B-3 with a 149 Leslie. Those would be a little hard to get from my house to the stage with my Volvo. You simply cannot beat performance for the cost.

4 chanel, full range amp. Each channel has an effects send knob in addition to the level adjustment. I mostly use this for acoustic guitar in performance. I have also played it out with my keyboard. Plenty of power, even with loud stage volumes. This is also advertised as a "PA." I have hooked up a mic to it's one input and guitar to another and it works quite well. I suppose you could use 1/4 phono cables and hook up 4 mics. I have not tried this. There's also a 4 band eq, tape in and out, effects loop, and a d.i. send (no seperate level for the d.i.). It is not stereo like the larger Roland amps, but I could never figure out why Roland calls there amps "stereo." I guess because you can send a stereo signal to the board...If you want to do this, just get two KX1200's. You'll have more power and spend less money. Great features for the price.

This amp has great bottom end. I used to use the smallest Roland keyboard amp, which works OK for guitar, if you don't need a lot of power. Don't think about using the 50-watt Roland for it's intended use (keyboards); it breaks up quickly on the bottom end, even at modest levels. WHen I hook up my keyboard to the KX1200, crank it up and lay down a heavy left-hand bass, this amp holds together and really belts out some meaty bass, I even have to turn the bass down a little! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For acoustic guitar, I use a Fishman blender (in mono mode) into a Fishman pre-amp. I have also tried it with my Digitech RP100, and it works great. If you use digital amp simulation, on guitar OR bass, then you need a full-range amp. Likewise, if you want your acoustic to sound like an acoustic, you need a full-range amp. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Because this has a 15 and great bottom-end, I think it would work well for acoustic bass or electronic drums. (although I have not used it in this capacity) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fan, but it's not too noisy. No one would use this for recording, anyway. The sound is "PA" quality, not studio monitoting quality, which is why the ratting is 8 and not 10.

I purchased this amp on Feb 15th, 03, the date code on the back reads 0802, Aug '02 sounds likely for date of manufacture.
This amp delivers a good basic selection of features, versatile enough to allow patching in other effects if I so choose. The beauty of this amp is its ability to provide a satisfactory mixer and a loud enough amp in a compact, transportable package.
I use this amp with my Roland GR-33 guitar synth. The three way speaker combination helps bring out the wide range of tones coming from the Roland, which my guitar amp doesn't quite do.

When the Beatles played on Ed Sullivan the first time, I was taking guitar lessons the next day! I have a degree in electronics and earn a living working in the engineering field. I would recomend this amp to someone with the understanding that they shouldn't expect to bring down the house with it. Some of the lower frequencies coming from a keyboard can easily damage the speakers, especially if they are transient spikes in that lower range. But having physically seen Fender & Roland keyboard amps with the same features for 30-40% more money, this amp is a great value.

The KX1200 is a pretty simple keyboard amp. I play rock/pop/folk through a Boss GT-6. I like to use keyboard amps because the GT-6s amp emulations are much better on a full range amp or PA.
This amp has 4 channels plus RCA's in for CD/tape. It is a pretty basic amp, but it is a BIG amp for it's price.
It does not come with rollers but has nice side handles that makes dealing with the weight much nicer.

Compared to my other keyboard amp (a Peavey) it sounds OK, but not great. A little muffled for some reason. I hooked up a EQ to and was able to get better sound than with it's built in 4 band EQ.

I think the cabinet could be designed to breath more freely and it would liven up the sound some.

The SMALL styrofoam corner pieces were shatter and flattened by the time I got it. Fortunately the amp was OK though. I'd give it a 6, cause it was packed so poorly, but since it took the shipment with no damage...I'll upgrade it to a 8.

More and more guitarists are looking a keyboard amps for their amp emulating effects chains, and for their accoustic guitar sounds. This is the cheapest of the big amps. It is priced similarly to a Roland KC 100 (60 watt), and sounds better than that. It is BIG, it is loud.
My other amp is Peavey KB/a 300, which is an excellent, excellent amp for my use but costs twice as much as the Behringer. I'll continue to play out with the Peavey. I bought the Behringer for practice and occasional (experimental) use to sit beside the Peavey for stereo work.

This amplifier, a new offering by Behringer this year, for my particular unit appears to have been manufactured in January of 02, judging by the date code. 120W RMS into a 15" woofer, passively crossed over to a 5" midrange cone and piezo tweeter. There are 4 balanced inputs with TRS phone jacks (tip-ring-sleeve), but the inputs are unbalanced if you are only using standard phone plugs (TS). Each channel has its own volume control and effects bus send, with an effects send/return bus output/input on the back panel. Channel 1 has an additional balanced MIC level input, there is a 4 band equalizer (bass, low-mid, high-mid, treble) cut and boost with dial controls. There is a master volume control and a headphone jack which cuts the main output to the speakers for practice purposes. In addition there is a direct out (DI) for connection to a board or studio balanced input, and a main line out for running an additional amplifier. I have my keyboards connected to a Behringer MX 802A mixer and my harmonica microphone also connected into the mixer. I use the mixer for my instrument controls so the way I use the KX1200 is simply to run the mixer's left and right main outs into two channels and set their levels to the same value and the EQ flat. I'll do the EQ from the mixer as well. The amp has more than enough power for my purposes, and the real test was to set my Yamaha MIDI keyboard to a drum set sound, turn up the volume and see what it could do. Transient response was excellent with no perceptible distortion. The amp is solid state.
Sound Quality
:

The amplifier is a keyboard amp. There is no built-in distortion and I suspect a guitar through it would need an amp/cabinet modeler to get a realistic guitar sound characterized by other amplifier/cabinet combos. The amp has a bit of hiss which seems to result more from the MX802 mixer more than the amp itself. I would have expected better input/output compatibility since both are Behringer products.

This is where I question. I have been a fan of Behringer products and nowhere else will you get a better price/performance ratio. However... I ordered this from Musician's Friend online. The packaging is so poor that there was a LOT of cosmetic damage (broken corner, lots of tears in the vinyl, dings in the wood under the vinyl, bent screws, etc., so much in fact that I thought they sent me a scratch & dent model. I paid for a new one. The people at Musician's Friend promptly sent me out a new one, but while I was waiting for the new one to arrive, the amp chassis in the first one failed. It worked well for about 10 minutes at a time and then broke out into a screeching feedback-type howl even with all knobs turned to zero, that would only go away by turning it off. A few minutes later, turned it back on and everything was ok for about 5 minutes until it happened again. This is obviously a unit which, despite claims by Behringer of high quality, ISO 9000 processes, etc. made it past QA without thorough testing. I suspect that a component has a failure in the power amplifier which runs away as the unit heats up. The replacement unit works great and that is the unit I rated above, although the packaging for the second one wasn't in much better shape than the first. Although Behringer claims that the unit was "carefully packaged at the factory" for tough shipment, I don't see it. The unit is nearly 70 pounds and should have more than some chintzy styrofoam corners 1/2" thick and a single layer cardboard box taped shut. The unit I sent back to Musician's Friend was double boxed using the cartons from both the new and the defective amp just to insure it gets back in one piece. It's warrantied for a year, but I have left it on for the past 4 days hoping if it breaks down due to infant mortality, I'll know soon enough. The warranty is for a year.

I love the sound of the amp and just as soon as I can get a Rotosphere, it will complete my setup so I can get a Leslie sound for the organ samples on my Yamaha as well as the clean sound for the rest of the sounds. My Yamaha has a DSP for effects and reverb modeling but the rotary speaker sounds leave a lot to be desired so I'll go to the Rotosphere for that. I've been a musician for nearly 30 years. Price/performance is good, but I'm a little gun shy on the quality area and if I had to replace it, I might just spring for the extra bucks for a JBL EON G2 just so I wouldn't have to go through the hassle. But time reliability remains to be seen. At the moment, though, I'm quite happy with it.

To begin with, this is a keyboard/compact PA amp-but I have discovered that it is amazing on bass (I will explain throughout my review). Behringer started to manufacture this unit in 2001. This is a 4-channel combo amp that delivers 120 watts into a 15", a 5", and a piezo. Each channel has its own Pre-gain Control, and there is a Master Control for the overall output. The EQ is four band, with controls for Bass, Low-mid, High-mid, and Treble. It also features an Effects Loop that also doubles an output that can be fed into a monitor. Each channel has a control to set the amount of effect (like, a flanger for instance) that each individual channel gets. It has four line-level inputs as well as a mic input on Channel 1. It also has a built-in D.I. to send the output to a mixer. It has a Headphone output along with RCA inputs/outputs to hook up a tape deck should one wish to play along with a tape-or to record what is being played. This is a solid-state unit. I only wish that it had an additional speaker out-but it is possible to drive an additional amp using the Line Out. Other than that, this thing is loaded with features!

I am one of those annoying "busy" players. You know, one of those guys referred to as a "frustrated guitar player"-a phrase that I have truly grown to hate over the twenty years that I have been playing bass, since it is an incorrect evaluation (I think the phrase must have been invented by an insecure guitar player-HA!). In the eyes of the mis-informed, if you're a bassist that plays more than four notes a measure while using overdrive-then you must not really be playing bass. Well, I pity the small-minded folk! I play using two outputs from my bass, one that is pure & clean lows, and the other which has my distortion and effects-a setup which has proven itself time & time again in power-trio settings (BTW-history lesson. Billy Sheehan has perfected this-but it started in the '60s with John Entwistle-God rest his soul-PLUS, why do you think Rickenbacker made the 4001 with two outputs, hmmmmmm???) And after years of lugging around two amps and cabinets, I started looking for a versitile mutli-channel setup that was easy to move and powerful-but that didn't cost an arm & a leg. I found the KX1200 on the next to the last page of the American Musical Supply catalog, and thought that it might do the trick. Man, was I surprised! This thing makes a KILLER bass rig! It has more than enough power for a club stage, and it doesn't weigh a ton! The EQ is really versatile, and can produce a whole myriad of tones. After doing a small party/gig to test it out, I had a lot of guys come up to me & ask me about the amp. They totally dug the sound that I was getting! Bass players AND guitar players!

I have only just now started to play out live with this amp, so I cannot really give an opinion about the longevity of these amps. But if they are made as well as Behringer makes all of its other gear, then I can only assume that it must be able to stand the test of time. And it seems to tolerate my brutal over-driven bass assault really well!
Customer Support

Before buying the rig,I placed a call to Behringer Customer Support up in Washington state. Since bass amps usually have a very high input impedance, and the Behringer's is somewhat lower (like a mixer is), I was concerned that it would not produce an adequate matchup. I spoke with a very knowledgeable tech, and he told me that it should be fine-but he recommended that I use a speaker simulator pre-amp. It turned out that the amp works great without any simulator!

I can honestly say that this amp has gone beyond my expectations, and that I am more than happy with it. I have been playing bass for over twenty years, and I have played through a LOT of different amps in my day. This amp is exactly what I have been looking for, and if it were ever stolen, I would get another KX1200.
