4 x 12 Celestion G12L-35 8ohm in a Marshall Lead cab.

Excellent - I have these speakers hooked up to a 68 Fender Bandmaster AB763. Clean tones have a very nice chime / sparkle with very good bass response. I also have a 2 x 12 cab with Jensen C12Ns. I want to note that for clean guitar, C12N's are slightly superior with more clarity in the HIs and MIDs. Even though the Jensen's sound slightly better, G12L-35's still sound excellent when played clean.
When played through an overdriven amp, these speakers sound absolutely amazing with smooth break-up and a warm British feel. G12L-35's outclass my old Jensen's in every sense for dirty / overdriven tones.

I purchased these in a Marshall Lead cab that was almost completely destroyed. However, the speakers inside are still in excellent condition and sound great.

8 ohm, I think, 12-inch ceramic magnet speaker.
Don't know the year.

This speaker came in a 1970 SF Princeton I bought last year.
This speaker was made for low-wattage combos! Even though the most common application is to see them paired or quadded, the low wattage rating on this amp makes my Princeton an incredibly versatile little amp, from warm, even cleans (even at high levels because this combination is really sensitive to picking dynamics) to a really defined, punchy crunch with plenty of wide, warm bass. Very British-sounding, think Kinks and early Who. The gorgeous Fender clean is still there, although with a warmth across the frequency spectrum. When dimed, the amp overdives nicely, with the crunch thickening out, perhaps a bit much bass-side.
For me, this is the perfect amp-speaker combo, and I just happened to luck into it! Definitely an under-rated speaker.

Couldn't say when the speaker was put in, but I read somewhere that they were made from the 80s through the 90s. So it's at least 10 or so years old.

Using the 4x12 G12l cab with an Tiny Terror and a Fender 600 reissue, and sounds great with both. Works great with my Hagstr??m II from 1964, sort of an P90 sound cracking out great. Also great with my hotrail Mex fender (pickups from GF), but not so good with the Firebird. Gets a litle to thick and dull with the humbuckers, no edge. I have still to try it with my MIJ fender 1984.
The firebird works better with the GH 75 w speekers in my 2x12.
This little 35 watt speeker is just great, and in x4 it is soundy heaven! and this for a bargin in compare to Greenbacks

Low efficiency Celestion 8 ohm speaker with a very small light-weight ceramic magnet for a 35 watt speaker.
Sound Quality
:

This speaker has lots of warm mids and excels at vintage overdrive tones. It is low efficiency (quiet), which means you can turn your amp up higher and get more tube overdrive at lower volumes (if you have a good tube amp of course). This makes it, in my opinion, an awesome speaker for a low power recording amp. It breaks up very early and that little ceramic magnet seems to compress almost like Alnico. Driven with the right amp (low power tube amp) in the right cabinet (pine with a large floating baffle sounds GREAT), it can produce a wonderful warm thick overdrive. The highs are there, but you will have to turn the treble up on your amp touch to hear them. And the highs are extremely smooth and warm. No itchy scratchy ice-pick sound at all. You need to pick the right tools for the job. If you need strong tight bass, this is not a good choice. If you need lots of edge to cut through a big mix, or country twang for your Tele, this is not a good choice. But if you want to coax warm thick overdrive tones out of your low-power tube amp at reasonable volumes, then this is excellent. The rating of 9 is for this application. Think Peter Green or Bluesbreakers.

I've had experience with lots of speakers such as Weber Blue Dog (awesome all-purpose Voxy tone), California (very hi-fi, a little harsh), 12F150 (awesome all-purpose American tone), Silver Bell (great overdrive), Eminence Private Jack (great speaker, bright but sweet), CTS 10's (awesome), 12" Oxfords (nothing special). Again, choose the right tool for the job. If you're looking for low power vibey breakup with lots of warm juicy mids, then the G12L-35 is a great bargain.

I picked up a pair of G12L-35 on Ebay for $62.00 including shipping. I play in a Rock en Espanol cover band in Chicago. My Avater 12 cab has the GH30, and it was not lound enough, I need just a bit more volume on the clean side. I replace these with the G12L-35,and what can I say, Bingo! I hit the holy notes!!

I play with a Fat Strat American, and the pickups come alive. I can play Rock, Norteno, Cumbia, Bachata, or any Latin Rythms with the speakers. My 212 cab is driven by a 60 watt CRATE head from the 1990's. Thus far this set up works just fine. Solid clean, and I am able to use the Chorus and Distortion when needed, which is seldom, but I am confident they are there for the calling when needed.

I got the speakers with soder stuff in the wire hook ups. I had to use a sender to get this stuff out which I did. After I took the stock speaker from the Avatar cab, and put this babies in, I was as happy as child in a chocolate store! Dave from Avatar did not want to trade for another set of speakers to replace the Hellatone 30's. Anyone interested in them. They are up for sale. email me at kowvulcan1500@yahoo.com, I will sell them at Cost.

Love the sound. I am not lound, just lound enough to play behind the Lead guitarist and the rythm section. The 35 watt is what I was looking for. If you come across a pair, try them. They are a bang for the buck!!!

Very crunchy, crispy, British sounding. The speakers help create a distorted tone by breaking up early due to their low wattage.

I've been playing for 9 years. I own a JCM800 2203 head, a couple of schecter guitars, boss effects, and a pod.
I'd probably give something else ago. Only because I'm into modern high-gain tone.
I love the rawness of these speakers, they excel at the 70s-80s Marshall Brit tone. They also make the cab a bit lighter due to smaller magnet weight.

If you sit there while chunkin away on your amp and thing to yourself "self, i wish this amp sounded a little more british" then this speaker is for you. I love the peavey classic series amps but found it hard to pair it with a decent sounding speaker to rival the stock blue marvels now i marvel at how great it sounds with my marshall 8412 cab loaded with these sweet crunchy natural voices from above!

35 W, 8 Ohm, made in England (no China crap).
Bought them used in a pawn shop and put them in my Marshall 1960A 4x12 cab to replace the regular G12-T75. Just like the last reviewer says: because of a lower output ratio (compared to a V30 for example) they allow you to crank your valveamp a bit more. That's why it is perfect for practice-room situations and for club-size gigs. Whoever gets to gig big stadiums? And because of the smaller magnet there is less weight to carry - a definite plus.

I play in a coverband and our setlist ranges from top ten pop (yuk) to classic rock to eighties metal. My main axe is a Gibson Les Paul Classic, main amp a Marshall JCM 800. Matches my cab and the G12L-35 speakers perfectly.
Wonderfull greenback-ish sound clean and distorted. Lots of definition and crunch. Nice speaker cone breakup.

I've been playing for more than 25 years, the last 15 years on a semi-pro level. I've owned / played / recorded through many different speakers by Celestion, Eminence, Jensen and Weber. This speaker is among the best for my applications and is fantastic value compared to the overpriced and mediocre-sounding Greenback reissues. If stolen, I'd replace them. However, I don't think Celestion produces them any longer.

I got four Celestion G12L-35 five years ago. I have Marshall cabinet (4x12",300 watts)that I wasn't too happy with. The problem was that I had to play very loud to get a nice sound. So I decided to change the speakers. I put in Celestion G12L-35 instead and wow!, what an improvement. It's only 140 watts now and my amp is a Marshall 50 w. valvetop from 1977. It's a perfect match.

My main guitar is Gibson Les Paul Standard. The cabinet sounds awesome with Celestion G12L-35. It's clear and brilliant, and when you turn the volume up you get this wonderful crunchy sound. It's very versatile. I play blues, rock and even some jazz, and I get this very nice tone with a Gibson ES-335.Cool.

I have tried many amps and cabinets, believe me, but for me these speakers do the job. You just plug in and you get "the sound" right away. You don't have to crank the amp up so get deaf.
I am very pleased with them.

Bought NEW in 1992..
I have a 70 lb, 3/4 size Marshall 4x12 cabinet loaded with these jems..Apparently this cabinet was designed with the "VALVESTATE"..technolgy in mind, but I used it with my old Peavey Triumph 120 head for 6 years...and now with my Marshal JCM600..what an absolutely classic sounding speaker!
Playing with my Tele' I get every ounce of colour from my all tube head...These speakers are very warm...a tight bottom end...better definition mid-range and can be as bright as you can handle..I personally never used them past 5 on my treble pot.
I would just die if my cabinet was stolen...and for the difference in price for "greenbacks"...I can't see point in spending the extra $$...I can barely tell the differences...and I think they just might be a better buy..depending on what your gig is anyways..
cheers..steve
