Well I felt obligated to write a review,,I've heard horror stories about this speaker,,My other guitar player has these in his 4x12 cab and HATES them,,but I always thought he may have no been eq'ing his amp right (jcm900). Well needless to say,, I just got a jcm 800 (4010) combo and this speaker came stock,, no matter how much i tweaked the amp the sound was harsh and brittle, I swapped the speaker out with a V30 and let me just say THANK GOD,I know have a nice warm/full sound. This speaker in my opinion is absolute garbage, virtually no bottom end and tons of high end, very brittle and harsh sounding.......
Reliability

seems reliable enough as the combo i bought this speaker was stock and it was made in 1984

I've been playing for over 20 years,, I've had tons of amps, cabinets and gear in general,, I can honestly say this is the worst sounding speaker I have ever encountered. If you have them in your cab and your frustrated with your rig the 1st thing I would do is change out this speaker,,,makes a world of difference,, i recommend celeston v30 or 25w greenbacks

Newer speaker, made in China I believe. I won't rate this because speakers don't have "features".
Sound Quality
:9
I will rate this a 9 because of its potential.
First off, I'll start by saying that there are a LOT of ways to use this speaker incorrectly. Where does it sound best? An amp that pushes out a lot of mids and not as much shrill highs. I use it with a Bogner Ecstasy 101b, and as long as I turn the mids up and treble and presence down, this speaker KILLS.
Tonally, this speakers is the sound of 80s metal. Again, best when paired with amps that push lots 'o mids like a Marshall JCM 800. Paired with My Ecstasy in Plexi mode, the sound of this thing just can't be any sweeter!
Where does it sound bad? Amps that are scooped to begin with will not work too well unless the G12T-75 is paired with a warmer speaker, such as a V30. It can be shrill, lifeless, muddy, but that's if you're using it incorrectly! Set up with the right amp, you'll be very pleased with what it can do.

I contacted Celestion once because I was worried about wattage ratings with my amp. They were very knowledgeable and quick to answer my question. 10 for sure!

I'm going to give this speaker an overall rating of 9, again because of its potential.
Give it some time, play with different setups, and if it still doesn't sound good, you're doing something wrong!

After reading reviews of this speaker and the vintage 30, I decided to buy a hellatone 60 (vintage 30) for a new combo amp that I'm building. I've got a Marshall cab with G12T-75's in it, but with all of the praise out there for the vintage 30, I decided to go in that direction instead. I must say that I regret my decision. The G12T-75 is a much better speaker. Not just a little but better, MUCH better.
I play old school heavy metal- Maiden, Priest, Sabbath, and lots of Thrash metal- Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax, and plenty of others including Pantera, Down, C.O.C., etc. I usually play though my Gibson V using the 500t hot ceramic bridge pickup. I also play with a Dean dixie rebel with a seymour duncan dimebucker in the bridge. Occasionally I'll use a les paul or explorer with EMG pickups. In any case, I'm looking to get that classic 80's marshall sound which is so familiar on old-school heavy metal records.
Using my custom built head (modeled after the JCM 800) I can get excellent heavy metal tone with the G12T-75. When I switched to the vintage 30 with the same guitars and the same head, it sounded like I was playing through some piece of **** that I could have bought at Wal-Mart for $30. The amp had no bottom end! I couldn't get any crunch out of it... just mids. I tried numerous settings with my EQ, but the vintage 30's just couldn't cut it.
Switching back to the G12T-75's, I was able to dial in my tone quite easily. There's plenty of heavy metal crunch. Lots of bass (not muddy, though) and screaming highs! This speaker definitely has scooped mids which is the quintessential sound of heavy metal. If you play classic and thrash metal like I do, you'll love this speaker. Don't believe the hype: the vintage 30 is not for heavy metal!

The G12T-75's in my cabinet have been there since the 80's with no problems. Be sure to get the Wattage and Ohm loads correct, though.

Over all, this is THE speaker for 80's metal. The vintage 30 isn't a bad speaker per se, but it definitely lacks in reproducing the classic metal tones the Glen Tipton or early James Hetfield variety. If your tone is: "You've Got Another Thing Com'n" meets "Two Minutes to Midnite," meets "Hit the Lights" then this speaker is for you. IF you love mids, go buy a vintage 30. If you're like me, and you love scooped mids, then this speaker is the holy grail of tone.

It can suit all sorts of musical styles from Jazz to Death Metal. This speaker does not have a lot of breakup or texture to the sound. Very cool and crisp character, made to be cranked hard at high volume where they cut through under high gain. They can also be heard well at very low volume, since the strong bass and highs are like a loudness curve.
I put a Vintage30 and a G12T-75 in a cab and the G12T-75 was completely dominant. You could hear heaps of solid bottom end coming from the G12T-75 and it was like the Vintage30 was not even there. So much for the V30 sounding twice as loud as other speakers. The only reason V30's don't crap out on the bass is because they have none, the only have lower mids.
I have used Vintage 30's, G12H-30's, G12T-75's and the Vintage 30 is a bit overrated, the G12T-75 is much better than the criticism it gets, and the G12H is the best of any of them. Read the ratings they are all spot on, but they are not in vogue like the V30's. Back to this speaker, well this was THE goto speaker from 1983 till whenever for all sorts of REAL Metal styles. Malmsteen uses these and you can hear every note clearly defined. The young ignorant kids just want a Rectumfrier and Vintage 30's giving NO DEFINITION.
They are a hard edged, hard hitting heavy metal speaker that performs best with reasonable to high volume.

I've used these speakers in a 1960a cab playing all styles from Clapton to Tom Petty to Iron Maiden, Ozzy (Rhoads and Zakk era), Sabbath, Hendrix.
I feel that this speaker gets too much critisism. I've tried the Vintage 30s & Sheffield 1200 and I prefer the G12T-75 to both.
The G12T-75 has more clarity, is tighter and can produce loads of bass while retaining good articulation. The nice thing about this speaker is that a little EQ'ing on your amp and get the Vintage 30 tone if that's what you're after. The Vintage 30 on the other end does not give you that end bite/sparkle and it will be harder for you to get that sound with just EQ'ing.
This is an extremely versatile speaker and I've been complitmented on my live tone when playing early Clapton, Hendrix, Sabbath, Zakk Wylde and Randy Rhoads. With the right guitar, amp settings and cab, these speakers are hard to beat. I also think that these are an excellent buy for the price.

I'm writing to tell my experience about the Celestion G12T-75 vs Vintage 30 issue.
I have a Marshall 1922 2x12" cab which came with two Celestion G12T-75 and I always found my sound harsh, too much treble and presence. I have a JMP-1 Marshall preamp, which is a bright piece of gear itself, so I for long wondered whose fault the harshness really was. (By the way, my power amp is a EL84 20+20 Marshall). I couldn't try out the Vintage 30s with my gear, because I didn't know of anyone or any shop in my city who had a 2x12" cab loaded with them, so I got information by the net, including this forum. Then I made my decision and bought the two loudspeakers never having heard them (except for guitar albums...).
Now I'm wondering why I waited so long!
I passed five years struggling with the G12T-75 excess of highs, which gets worse and worse the louder you play them! The Vintage 30s, instead, are really balanced speakers for guitar, that's why so many great guitar players use them. Other than less highs, they also have a bit less bass, that's why someone perceive them as midrangy. The beauty of the sound of electric guitar, however, IS in the midrange, so these speakers are a perfect match because of their accuracy in that band of frequency. Also, these speakers taught me that I used to have too much bass in my sound. This is because when trying to replicate the sound of guitar in albums, I did the common mistake of not considering the impact of the bass guitar on the overall sound enough. However, don't think that these speakers can't deliver bass: my bass setting is way distant from max in my preamp and I actually prefer this bass response over the G12T-75s one, because the latter is too boomy and undefined.
The Vintage 30s also have a good constancy in sound at different volumes, so I don't have to totally reset my equalization when playing live anymore (I usually first make my sounds at home), as the G12T-75s compelled me to do (mostly because of more and more highs the louder I turned my amp).
Last, but not least, finally the sound I get from the cab and the emulated direct output sound in my preamp are comparable: this means the cab emulation circuitry in the JMP-1 was designed with a Vintage 30 or similar sound in mind. When I still had the G12T-75, I had to use a totally different equalization when playing with the cab and when recording or playing in line.
I play from progressive metal to swing, passing through classic rock and blues and I really can't imagine any good application for the G12T-75. The Vintage 30s, instead, finally set a reference point for making my sounds.

This speaker has low end chunk, but it is not "beefy", it has mids, but not much, and it has the highs, but they ear peircing! Very brittle sounding speaker, and way to bland. I play alot of metal, and some classic rock, but mostly metal. Like someone else here said, these would be perfect stock speakers for crate.
I have done a lot of a/b'ing speakers, and I'm really digging the sound of the celestion Hellatone, vintage 30, and the Eminence Red coat series speakers.

These speakers are tone dry to the bone!!!! Vey weak/brittle, no force at all.
If your into "hardcore" or "emo", this the speaker to get.
I'll give it a solid 5. No point on going lower, as I'm sure there are much worse.

What Can I say about this speaker? Brittle, lifeless, dull, and tone dry!
It has low end, but it is not beefy. It has mids, but not much. It has high's, but they are ear piercing! I play Trash/speed metal, and they don't cut it for me. Mids are importent for guitar, and this speaker just slacks mids, and sounds weak.
The hellatone is 100X better in my opinion. This would be the perfect stock speaker for Crate, just like someone else said.
I won't give a score, because it is just my opinion, and I'm not exactly a expert either.

Scooped, not bad sounding. Sounds thin with strat and tele, much better with LP using neck pup. Sounds great for high-gain stuff. Not chimey or bell-like. Smooth Low/mid/high transition. upper level harmonics and sustain are abundant. Has a little trouble when pushed using a low-power EL84-based amp. I don't get major chunkage with a 40 watter tube combo. I think these would sound best in a closed-back multi-speaker cab, not well suited for a single 12" combo amp.

Standard speaker in Marshall Valvestate 8080 1x12 combo that I have had for years. That amp is is a shocker and the speaker sounds very harsh with it. Ok, having said that, I now use a 4x10 Fender Hotrod Deville with a Strat, a Tele and a 335. Experiment time... I made a cable to connect from the ext. socket in the Fender directly to the speaker in the Marshall so I could use it as an extention cabinet. The Fender 4x10 Has Celestion Tube 10s in it and it just drowned the 12" so I could really tell if it was worth using it. For fun I disconnected the 4x10s and just played the Fender thought the 12". It sounds great! Very warm and articulate with great highs and tight lows. I was shocked. Handles ALL the 60 watts the Fender can deliver and it provides a usuable change of tone and sonic characterists for the Fender. (It still sounds terrible with the VS8080, must be the amp eh?......)

Under the right circumstances they are probably alright. They sound very harsh in closed back cabs, and/or with solid state amps. Maybe open back cabs are the go with them.
