This Crate DXB112 was built in 2002, purchased 12/01/03 new. It is all digital with 16 tube amp simulations and 16 effects some are combo's.
It has 30 watts at 4 ohms and has the controls top mounted. the back has RCA jacks, Midi, on/off switch, and 1/4" speaker out, with a rectangle ported closure panel behind the speaker. Black tolex covering, copper control plate cover, large carry handle (top) and vinyl corner guards. The 12" 4 ohm speaker is very special and sounds very much like a Celestron Vintage 30
Weight 20 lbs , size 19"W, 15.5"H, 10"D

Sound Quality : 10
I use every type of Guitar on this amp I have every concievable type in my collection from Les Pauls, Strats, ES335, Washburn,Yamaha, Danelectro, Ibanez and many Acoustic electrics. This amp makes even the worst of guitars sound great. I have 7 amps in all and this one is very special in deed too me. It does the distortion for rock very smoothly and realy brings up the bass sounds. This AMP will actualy give you the full sound of playing in a large theater with all kinds of stacks and PA's behind you with just it's 12" speaker. It almost unbelievable. The Reverb is absolutly Stellar and the effects are very
good in deed. The 16 tube Amp simulations are all very good and I like almost all of them, The clean and acoustic have to be adjusted differently on the amp with the controls to bring up there volume so thats kind of a pain, theres some noise on most setting because there always is with settings that use high gain and most of them are set for feed back distortion type sounds, Like from the Mesa Boogie's, Marchalls,Fenders Black Face & Large Tweed ,Vox AC 30, and Crate VC60 & Voodo type amps that this AMP emulates. For good clean sound I use my GX65 crate or my VC50H / GXS412S, there better for that purpose. This unit is for world class distortion that is its strong point. Its controls are as easy to use as a Line 6 pod only you dont have to buy one its already built in the amp. In my opinion this unit sounds better than any Line 6 product, any its probley 10 time more reliable.

Reliability : 10
I feel that this unit will be as reliable as my other two Crate amps.
Ive never had a problem with the GX65 or the VC50H. I havent had it to long yet but Crate has a very good track record with me.
Ive had two Line 6 amps and a pod 2 they were all unreliable.

I have delt with St Louis music in the past. They took very good care of me. That was a problem with one of there guitars and they not only replaced it but also gave me a better upgraded model by my request.

Overall Rating : 9
Ive been playing for over 40 years considering my first guitar was given to me in 1958 a jr Martin. I have now three Crate amps inclding the dxb112, Vox, Univox,Dean, Prime, and Fender. In the Past had a Fender Super Reverb, Ampeg 15w tube amps and Line 6 Spider 112,and Spider II 212. I use Boss VF1 and Korg Pandora 3 on the other amps for effects. I can run any three amps all at once from my position. I play mostly smooth Jazz, Modern Blues and Classic rock.
This amp is realy terrific and I would deffinitly try to find another if it were missing. Its no longer in production and thats too my amazment as it sounds so very very good. I guess Line 6 does a better job of advertising.

The features are plentiful! Although the flexability of effects and models is less than Line 6 Flextone III's offer, this amplifer makes things easier for on-the-fly sound searches. The variety of sounds offered is also a great point to this amp, as well as back panel connections. The 30 load this amp offers is plenty for all people, especially mic'd with an SM57 or something. Perfect for studio or even practice. The versatillity makes it a pefect amp for live gigs as well.

Sound Quality : 10
This amplifier is absolutely amazing! The little guy goes from hard rock (very well done) to blues (again, well done) to acoustic, which... is a little bit harder to adjust to. The closed back on the cab really pushes the sound out. I own a Line 6 Flextone III and this amplifier I often prefer due to the power and sound emmiting from the cab. I love the variety of the amps offered. I love all of them, even the solid state emulation - it's all very well done by Crate. Really excells at bass heavy music - also excells at more mellow music.

Reliability : 10
Solid-State = should last a lifetime! No probs yet!

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never dealt with St. Louis Music.

Overall Rating : 10
This amplifier is amazing! Several of the sounds are better than the Line 6 flavor - sounds like the harder distorted, the large tweed and the JCM 800 model. Of course this is my opinion. Personally, the sounds have a larger gain range than the Line 6 equals. All in all, perfect amp for any gig. Buy them up before they're no longer sold!

Made in 2002 I think. The amp is very versitile for the Studio. I can get some awesome sounds from this thing. If I want a hendrix sound I can get it with some tweaking. If I want a Tube Rectified Sound I can get that too. I have spent hours tweaking and still haven't found all of the sounds.

Sound Quality : 7
I use it mainly in the studio. I get so many sounds I get alot of texture into the recordings. I have used it to play with the band when writing and playing softer. It could be used for a small club gig very nicely. The distortions are nice. Particularly the Tube Rectified Sounds.

Reliability : 10
So far no problems. I take good care of it though and usually keep it in the studio.

Customer Support : No Opinion
The warranty is 5 years, two years for the tubes & speakers. Never had a problem so far.

Overall Rating : 10
If this were stolen or lost I would replace it.

this amp has tons of different sounds. i spent the past week experimenting with all of the different amplifier models and effects. most of the amplifier settings need some adjusting, but you can really dial in some sweet tones. you'll probably want to scrap most of the factory presets right from the start.

Sound Quality : 9
i play with a telecaster that has a humbucker on the neck and a lace sensor pickup on the bridge. in combination with this amp there is an endless number of tones to choose from. the effects are pretty good too. not the greatest i've heard but what do you expect from a $250 amp? i use most of my own effects pedals with this amp and use the midi pedal to get different amp tones. the only two effects i really use from the amp are the rotating speaker and the auto wah. both of which sound pretty good.

i read some folks complain about the volume not being loud enough, but i found it to be just fine. i played plugged into the high input with the master volume set at 12:00 and could hear over the drums bass and rythm guitar just fine. if you're not cutting through you should probably tell your drummer to chill out. it'll save your eardrums.

Reliability : 8
i have used it gigging for the past three weeks and it has held up just fine. no problems so far.....

i definitely like this amp. if it was stolen i would buy another for sure. for the amount of money i spent it is well worth the price. just a fair warning, if you want true tube sound, buy a tube amp. the amp modeling equipment is good but not as good as the real thing. however, if you're tired of carrying around heavy tube amps and paying to have tubes replaced like me. or if you just want a wider pallete of sounds to choose from without having to spend tons of cash on vintage equipment then this amp is a great buy.

Bought brand new by me in early 2003. Holy **** does this thing have a ton of sounds! Built in phaser, chorus, flanger, delay, echo, reverb, tremolo & even rotating speaker (Leslie) emulation. Also, you can emulate models of just about every amp imaginable. I highly reccomend the top end DXFC foot controller to get the most from this amp.

Sound Quality : 9
I've used this with Les Paul copies, a Strat and ES-335's and it shines with all of them. If you can think of a sound, you can probably dial it in to this amp. Sounds great at high volume or even at low volume. At 30 watts this is more suited to home use or possibly small clubs.

I'm a tube amp diehard, but I'm also a gimmick lover...this amp will never replace my Super Champ, but it sure is a lot of fun and a nice change!

Reliability : No Opinion
These modelling amps are definately delicate technology (aren't all computers). While I've had no problems with in in my 2 months of light home use, I'd be leery to use it without back up when it really mattered.

Customer Support : 5
Saint Louis Music (Crate) is a company I've had a long relationship with. I've been very happy with their support and help over the years but my experience with this amp has tarnished that a bit. First off it was a week long project trying to get info out of them where to find one of these amps in my area, they sent me to 4 different stores (many miles apart)...the first 3 had no Crate DX amps of any kind in stock. Next, when I finally found one and brought it home, there was no manual (and you really need a manual for this amp!!!). A visit to their website produced manuals for every amp they've ever made...EXCEPT THIS ONE!!! After 6 emails and over a month they finally sent me a manual no charge. Don't get me wrong, these guys have been great to me over the years, I just saw a lot of disorganization and a big league run around trying to find one of these amps. That may be because I'm in Canada (just outside of Toronto, Canada's biggest population base mind you). I expected much better from Crate...but in all honesty there just about as good/bad as the rest of the companies out there for support/communication.

Overall Rating : 7
This is a very competitively priced modelling amp that holds it's own with the big boys. The features and sound are great, the price is very fair, the service is a tad shaky but 100% dependable in the final analysis (just can be a bit frustrating). The big downside to this amp is that I believe Crate has terminated the DX series of modelling amps (check with them to confirm that).

this is a 30 watt solid state modeling amp that has 1 -12 inch speaker ..pretty much enclosed back cab for more of a bass emphasis ..it has about 16 effects ( don't ask me to name em all ) but most of em work pretty well ..the auto wah is really good and so is the delay and the rotary speaker .. and everything is knobs so you can just twist and go .. it does come with a floorboard but i didn't get it .. probably about 175 dollars more so i skipped it .. it also models a bunch of different amps ..and it has a cd input so you can hookup your cd walkman and jam along .. i haven't used that yet cause i have it in my living room and my stereo is plenty loud enough so no need yet ..

Sound Quality : 9
well to start with let me say that this is really just a practice or recording amp .. you may be able to use it live if you mike it but otherwise i doubt it .. so a lot of guys were dissapointed when they found out it couldn't be a giggin amp ..don't make that mistake .. you ain't gonna push 80 watts out of this thing ..it's only 30 and frankly because it's solid state it seems like it's even less.. but most solid state amps do .. when it comes to just plain raw power it's not fair to compare 30 solid state watts to 30 tube watts .. i wish they had another way to compare the output ..like maybe a decibel meter 10 feet away straight at the speaker ..that would give everybody a better idea of what the output of an amp truly is cause watts is so misleading sometimes ..that being said i don't necesarily prefer a tube amp over a solid state ..i judge em one by one on their own merits ..if the tone is there then i'll play it ..and the tone is definitly there with this one ..you can use the modelin knob and get a boogie or a fender or a marshall ( the marshall was pretty good sounded like a bunch of bees but then thats the sound of a marshall) it has a few of crates own amps there too and they sounded pretty good and a top mount which i assumed was their attempt at a vox ac30..do these models sound exactly like the originals ?? of course not ..but they get you in the neighborhood and thats more than most other amps will do..i put a 72 les paul deluxe and a 99 classic standard les paul ( it's a long story )and an electra with gibson paf's, an aria cs400 (an awesome guitar )a yamaha sg 500 (older jap model ) a fender strat with kent armstrong vintage pickups ( awesome pups ) and a few monstrocities that i threw together myself from parts and they all sounded good .. this is one amp that you can pretty much just plug in and go .. no bad boxes needed .. the distortion isn't as distorted as i might have expected but it's still not bad .. i noticed that when i first plugged it in it sounded really bass heavy but i live in a house with a wooden floor and the amp was couplin with the floor ..i put it up on a foot stool and that solved that problem ..i don't know if it would react the same way on a cement floor or even a cement floor with a rug but i'd suggest you raise it up a few inches off the floor and you'll thank me .. i mostly play classic rock like beatles and eagles and stuff like that but i think it could handle jazz as well as country ..i'm not too sure about headbangin metal but with a bad box i'm sure anything is possible ..it just probably won't be loud enough .. this amp won't make your ears bleed .. but then bear in mind it's a practice or recordin amp and it won't bother you .. i've read some other guys say they couldn't hang with a drummer and although i haven't tried to i'd have to say they're probably right .. but all in all for a practice amp with 1 12 inch speaker this thing sounds pretty good ..

Reliability : No Opinion
as far as reliability goes i don't know yet ..but i won't be giggin with this amp anyway ..maybe gettin togther on a back porch or something but otherwise it's stayin home where it belongs ..it's solid state though so i'm thinkin it will be pretty reliable.. time will tell .. if it screws up i'll be back to ammend this ..

Customer Support : No Opinion
don't know and i hope i don't ever have to find out ..

Overall Rating : 9
i've been playin for about 30 plus years (and boy are my fingers tired) and i own about a dozen or more guitars and about a dozen amps too .. most of my amps are peavey's or crates or rolands ..and a few bass amps .oh yeah and a carvin tube amp with a celestion which is pretty good .. a poor mans boogie i think .. i don't know how i could lose something as big as this but if something happened to it i'd try to get another one .. and i did compare it to a peavey transfex 208s and that also sounds pretty good with a bunch of built in effects but you don't have the ability to just twist and go like the crate does .. the only thing i wish they included was the floorboard but for the price i got it i shouldn't complain .. i think for the price i spent i couldn't get a better practice or recordin amp anywhere period...

The amp is very versatile. There are lots of amp modeler options and effects. You can save up to 128 presets using a midi pedal and access them real time while performing. The effects are medeocre at best and the amount of distortion available is less than desirable for styles such as punk and heavy medal. The sustain of this amp is terrible. The sound quality is pretty darn good. The amp models are nice. The stereo out option is terrible due to overdrive within the line. The biggest drawback of this amp is that it falls apart. The midi ports wear out, the main power connection makes noise after only a few weeks and the sound begins to cracks after several months of playing.

Sound Quality : 9
I used seymore duncan humbuckers with this amp. The sound that my guitar creates ranges from very mild distortion to extremely clean. I played basically pop/rock though it...using wah/echo/reverb/chorus effects and several of the amp modeling features. I typically set it to half volume then mic'd the amp into a PA which was used exclusivily for the guitar. I got a pretty good sound out of the system despite my terrible mic.

Reliability : 5
Ok here's where i wanna give out the warning. I took good care of my amp and it still consitently broke down on me until it finally gave out on me. I payed 500 dollars for this amp and it lasted 1 1/2 years...not worth the money...but it did help me develop a unique sound for my band...so in that way it was invaluable...but i will not be getting another one because of the improvements in digital sound production within other companies.

16 models, 16 digital effects. 30watt 12" speaker. Top mount controls make it easy to switch effects while practicing. I currently use it at the house, and more than enough power to fill the room. It also has RCA cd input so I can play along with my favorite tracks.

Sound Quality : 10
I'm currently just beginning on the electric. I'm using an Alvarez AGS2 (their version of a fat strat), which is also made by SLM.
The sound is phenominal. I love lots of effects and distortion. I easily found all the cool Smashing Pumpkins, Pink Floyd, and Led Zep sounds, but also has many classic grit and clean sounds as well.

Reliability : 10
So far so good, have owned it a few weeks.

I needed a manual as I bought it used online. SLM quickly mailed one out free of charge.

30 watt, 12" combo. 16 amp models (historic to modern) plus clean & acoustic simulator. 16 digital effects (choose one at a time, about half are 2 or 3 combos of effects). Separate reverb control above all effects. MIDI input. CD stereo input. Headphones. 20 lbs

Sound Quality : 10
Using with Fender Lead II (modified) with Seymour Duncan SSL-3 high output single coils. Also used with SG. This amp is awesome - it allows either guitar to voice itself from true instrument sound to deeply overdriven. The amp models are very, very true. Example - I also have a Blue voodoo 60 watt tube amp - and the emulation of this amp is dead on. Very warm, rich tone in all amp models.

Reliability : 9
It's used without backup - no tubes to worry about but great tube tone. Only weighs 20 lbs.

Customer Support : 9
Great web site - manuals on line. Crate supports the amp for downloads (amp updates, additional presets, etc) through their website too.

Overall Rating : 10
This is a remarkable value. I wanted one amp that could do it all, not break my wallet, clean up my practice area of cords and effects, AND still have great tone. It does all that while looking cool (very retro look) and really cranking.

With a 12" driver it supplies the volume and tone for small jams, and can also be used as a pre-amp of effects and tones for your other favorite amps.

Sound Quality : 9
At first I was skeptical about digital amps but after i tried this one I wouldn't think twice to count them out. Yeah it doesnt exactly sound like a marshall, mesa, fender or other presets but they do sound really good. I play a esp ltd h-300 with a duncan JB and 59 set of pickups and it truly rocks.I can get some really heavy tones some awesome clean tones and lots inbetween. Just earlier today I was getting some really cool Tool sound out of the top mount Vox AC30 model. The effects are ok not exactly like having a good set of pedals. Not as much control over individual effects but at least you can program up to 10 channels so you can switch easily. I would like to us a combination of effects but you can only use combinations already set on the amp. Suprisingly this amp is pretty loud for only being 30 watts, its just my practice amp and I haven't raised it higher than 1 o'clock on the dial. Over all a really good amp and I would recommend it to anyone wanting a decent digital amp.

Reliability : 10
No problems yet but I've only had it for a few days. I also have a crate gx-212+ and that this is 5 years old and no problems. That being the case I'm sure Crate has made another reliable amp.

Customer Support : No Opinion

Overall Rating : 9
Overall this is a really good amp in its price range. Great sounds and reliability but not enough control over effects.
