It's a speaker. 50 Watts.

Sound Quality : 10
I play rock/blues harp. I got this to use with low watt amps that break up really easily. Recently played a small bar with a Masco amp that breaks up too easily and doesn't get loud enough with my 4x8 cab (with vintage Jensens). Put in a small cab 1x12. It was perfect. It's super efficient, so it got plenty loud. It was smooth and mellow, which paired with this amp (which is raucus) was just right. Really nice for harp. There's no ice-pick in this speaker.

You must BREAK IT IN. Sounded terrible out of the box. 20 hours with my stereo blasting through it and it was a different speaker.

Reliability : No Opinion
I imagine it'll last, but only some practice and one gig so far.

Overall Rating : 10
Just what I was looking for. Smooth, mellow high end, plenty of lows. This is what makes a good harp speaker. If you're looking for the speaker to break-up, this is not the one. But for a nicely distorting amp, just right. Or, if you're going for a warm, smooth tone, it would work with a clean amp.

its an 8 ohm.

Sound Quality : 10
well I first put this speaker since it is a 12" in front of my deltablues 15 just to see how the delta would sound as I am looking for a better speaker then the blue marvel 15" that came with it. well it wasn't as loud as the 15 { I unhooked the 15"}but the sound was way better so I turned it up and man was I impressed at how good it sounded. it gave the delta blues a new life.
so I had bought it for my old 77 peavey classic after much researh on speakers and having a legend 125 in it already I was looking for an american sound like a fender twin and all I can say is it sounds better then most twins I have heard. I used to have the evil twin and it sounded good but this peavey sounds great now. every note stands out.now I am betwixed a rock and a hard place as I was thinking about putting a red fang 12" in the delta bluesafter changing out the 15" baffle of course but the rex sounds so good. what do I do now?

hemp cone, 50m watts rms, 38 oz. magnet - i'll give it some "features points", as it is versatile

Sound Quality : 10
sounds great with single coils (best speaker ever for singles, in my experience), and sweet with the 'buckers too. it's a darker speaker, but not muddy at all - in fact, it's really defined, with an open sound despite it's fullness, and responds well to changes in picking attack. overdrive through it is BUTTER! great for a different kind of tone with modern sounds, and nice for vintage sounds too.

Reliability : 10
it's an Eminence. i've owned many, without a problem, and i've certainly not had a problem with this speaker after a few months.

Customer Support : No Opinion

Overall Rating : 10
definitely worth checking out for some thick, defined toneage. also, it just reeks of quality - not for everyone, but a truly great speaker. btw, the reviewer a few posts down talking about "harsh highs"? ... you didn't let the speaker break in! all speakers need breaking in by playing loud and clean for a few hours, and this one needs more break-in than most.

12" 50W speaker - hemp cone

Sound Quality : 10
I play mostly teles through a blackface Bassman and 2x12 Bassman cab for vintage rock and roll tones. I did a lot of research before buying these speakers and it paid off. Very present, but not too bright. The amp responded very well to changes in volume on the guitar. Well rounded and punchy. They already sound like vintage speakers.

Reliability : No Opinion
I would use these speakers without a backup. I've never had reason to doubt Eminence's reliability.

Never had to use warranty repair with speakers. You take care of them and they keep working for you.

Overall Rating : 10
I've been touring for about 10 years and have used Les Pauls, Teles, Ricks, etc., so I know good rock tone (think Keef, Mike Campbell, Billy Gibbons, Paul Kossof). These speakers nail it. I would definitely buy these again if they were stolen. Love the tone, but I wish you could get tone like this out of an alnico magnet (just for the weight). I've been used original Oxfords for years and these sound just as good.

12" Speaker..

I use them with any type of music from metal to classic rock to funk to blues to jazz

Sound Quality : 10
The Cannabis Rex is 1 of my favorite speakers ever. I can't Pick ABSOLUTE FAVORITES in gear as I own way too much of it and appreciate the virtues of each piece I own . That said I have probably over 50 speakers total related to guitar gear and lots more including PA gear and the Cannabis Rex is 1 of the best. I don't post on speaker reviews normally as it's TOTALLY subjective and we all hear and use them differently but I couldn't disagree more with the previous review so had to post!

Reliability : No Opinion
I've had 3 ... 1 blew without warning in the middle of playing (not at a gig fortunately) I was bummed as though I've owned loads of speakers , played for a long time and own many amps and cabs I've only blown 4 speakers that I can remember in my life (1 Celestion Blue in a Vox ac30, 1 Naylor, 1 old Cele g12-70, and this one) ...

Eminence replaced it under warranty for free and VERY QUICKLY .. As for Reliability as a result of that 1 blowing , I won't post an opinion. My other 2 have been perfect and I play 50-100 watt amps thru them regularly at pretty loud volumes. I'd have to suspect it was a fluke , as does occur with speakers!

Customer Support : 10
PERFECT experience for me.. See above.. They replaced my speaker under warranty with no charge and very quickly . Polite , courteous, and quick . Couldn't ask for more.

Overall Rating : 10
I think the Cannabis Rex's I own are some of the best guitar speakers ever. I'm a 'rock 'player who plays loud and many different varieties from Hendrixesque to current nu-metal to blues and fusion. They sound best cranked, are medium volume compared to all the others out there (i.e. Webers, Celestions, Ev's, Sholz, Jbl, Naylor, etc) , and are very rich , warm , balanced, smokey , and just plain excellent sounding. They excel with cleans and with overdrive and with heavy distortion (FOR ME) so I find them to be nothing short of excellent. I don't know if the previous reviewer has a completely different playing style than me, way different ears, or had defective CR's, but my experience has been so different I felt the need to post. Carry on!

ITs a speaker

Sound Quality : 3
The footnotes for you here.

1) Not very balanced in its tone.
2) Harsh Highs and not very smooth compression
3) too much wattage for most amps 50w++
4) Not good so good for open back cabs
5) LOUD LOUD LOUD, very loud
6) Bottom end is not tight, very spungy.

There are other Speakers in this line that sound better, the Red Fang is a good options. This speaker falls in the US Cone line but uses a british style cone. A Weber 12f150 sounds much much better!! Costs a little more

I basically use humbucker-equipped guitars, both solid and semi-hollow for blues, jazz and pop. I play for my church every other Sunday.

I used the CR to replace a stock Jensen P12N in a Heritage Patriot 50 combo. The Jensen was just shy of OK for me but didn't have enough mids.

The CR definitely had more punch than the stock speaker but was still very smooth. Also, the CR lends more definition to the high frequencies. While I lost some of the lows, the Heritage still has the best low-end of any combo I've owned. But since I liked the lows on this amp so much, I'm knocking a point off for the loss.

The speaker also beefed up my overdrive and distorted sounds from my pedals (Reverend Drivetrain II, Barber Direct Drive, ProCo Vintage Rat, etc.) Tones got fuller without getting muddy.

Not a lot of speaker break up unitl it's cranked. The Jensen broke up a little earlier than I preferred and the CR doesn't even break a sweat at similar volumes.

Check out my review of the Heritage Patriot 50 elsewhere on this site for the complete scoop.

Reliability : No Opinion
It's only been a few weeks since I installed the speaker, but Eminence stuff has never let me down before. I don't expect this one to either. If it blows up, don't worry; there'll be another post here as soon as possible! :-)

Customer Support : 8
Eminence has always been great about answering e-mails. I haven't had any need to contact them for the CR, but my past experiences warrant a high mark in this area for 'em.

Overall Rating : 9
Great speaker! For me it really represents that "American Sound" with some "British Charm." It's very clear sounding with just enough fullness. I definitely dig the price I paid for it, too. It was a great match for this amp without compromising its great tonality.

Yup I'd buy another. Only reason I wouldn't is if I found a better sounding Eminence speaker.

Peace!

cannabis rex 50 watt guitar speaker with a hemp cone

Sound Quality : 10
i'm using the rex thru a mesa boogie mark 1 reissue 1x12 combo--when i first received the amp, i wasn't sure if the wattage of the rex could handle the speaker--but i was so intrigued and impressed by the tone of it--so just for experimentation, i put in a weber chicago(80 watt)ceramic magnet speaker and felt that altough it had somewhat more 'headroom', it had nowhere near the sweetness of the rex--so i had the rex re-installed and the amp sounds so much better--to anyone who is using this thru a 100 watt amp, remember that the rex can take 100 watts peak power--and the break-up that i get running it this way is not harsh or trebly--its very smooth--in fact, i'd have to say that this is one of the very best speakers on the market--i would imagine(and certainly hope, considering the price)that a tone tubby hemp cone would sound even nicer, but at $70, the rex is too much of a bargain--

i would buy this again--most assuredly so--i use a switch'aurora'chambered electric and a epiphone'elite' 1963 ES335 thru the boogie--and con't say enough about these guitars with the rex--if you are looking for a speaker that truly delivers the best of the old and new, buy this one!!

12" 8ohm guitar loudspeaker. Hemp cone adds to the cool factor.

Sound Quality : 10
Strat clone through a 20W Traynor YGM3 1-12". Used to replace stock Marsland (blah!). The speaker isn't even broken in and my amp sounds much better, although considering what was in it that might not be a fair comparison.
With this speaker I can get smoky smooth blues sounds to nice clean jazz/country licks just by moving the EQ on my amp. When I crank up the volume and overdrive the poweramp the speaker doesn't break up and I get smooth yet articulate low end with sparkly mids and highs. A nice low fat rock/blues sound.

Sounds great for my style of playing.

Reliability : No Opinion
I'd gig with it only because my amp is built like a brick s&!t house
that'll keep the speaker safe from cigarettes and alcohol.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never dealt with the company. I've heard mixed reviews on dealing with them.

Overall Rating : 10
Been playing for a few years, still working on my own style. If it were stolen I'd find the first idiot trying to roll the cone for smokes and beat them over the head with the magnet.

I did some research on other brands (celestion, jbl, jensen, etc)with similar specs and thought this would be the best one for the money.

It is a 12", 8 ohm speaker from Eminence's Patriot Series. The Cannabis Rex is Eminence's answer to the "Tone Tubby" hemp cone speaker with a ceramic driver which they've developed to their own specifications. It is made right here in the USA in Eminence, KY.

I play a 60 watt Mesa/Boogie Mark III 1x12 combo that I purchased back in 1987. I originally had a Celestion G12H-100 (British speaker; not Chinese) put in for added bite (it came with a Black Shadow speaker). I also purchased at the time a Boogie ported 1x12 cabinet with an EV 12L.

Since I play blues, blues-rock, an jazz, I was looking to update my sound to a smoother, bluesier, creamier tone.

In order to achieve my desired tone, I have first replaced the stock Celestion with an Eminence Red, White & Blues (see my review http://www.harmony-central.com/Guitar/Data/Eminence/Red_White_and_Blues-01.html) because the G12H didn?t give me the tone that I wanted and it also sounded a bit ?brittle? to my ears. I absolutely adore the RWB speaker and was looking for a great match to pair it up with; I found it in the Cannabis Rex.

Don?t get me wrong; the EV-12L that I was using was a great speaker, particularly since it was housed in a Boogie 1x12 ported cabinet. But to my ears the EV always had a sort of ?generic? sounding and wasn?t very warm. Just like the RWB I did a lot of due diligence and read up on hemp cone speakers. Since my Boogie puts out 60 watts it wasn?t a good idea to use it as my primary speaker (sometimes I?ll play out with just the Boogie MkIII and not my extension 1x12 cabinet) because I can risk blowing it. (I do play loud!) So I read up on the Tone Tubbys and the Eminence Cannabis Rex. Certainly not to take away anything from Tone Tubbys (a friend of mine has them in a 2x12 cabinet and SWEARS by them) but I just wasn?t prepared to spend $275 for the AlNiCo or $125 for a ceramic. I then read on that the ceramic hemp cones work best in closed and ported cabinets whereas the AlNiCos work best in open backs. I the found out that there all of the hemp cones are made at an ?undisclosed location in Chicago? (see article in Sterophile: http://www.stereophile.com/news/053104hempcones/) are Tone Tubby licensed the hemp cone technology to only one other manufacturer: Eminence. I even obtained the recent write up in Guitar Player as well as made numerous phone calls to speaker retailers about their opinions on the Cannabis Rex.

"Bernie? at BLT Sound was incredibly helpful and earned by business. I told him my primary guitar is a Heritage 535 with Seymour Duncan Seth Lover humbuckers (tone to die for!). I told him I was looking for a companion to my RWB so I can achieve that holy grail of tone, which to me is a blend of Robben Ford?s sweet syrupy tone and Larry Carlton?s smoothness. I did not want a speaker that would make the guitar sound tubby or blurred. He recommended the Cannabis Rex as the companion speaker and even added that he uses this one himself (I believe in a ported cabinet too)! Thanks Bernie ? your suggestion was right on the mark!

Sound Quality : 10
I could not be happier with my purchase! The speaker has exactly wanted I read about: warm, smooth, and balanced through the bass and midrange and has a rising treble response with a complex high-end texture that is very pleasing to my ears. The clean tones are indeed open and chimey with incredible clarity. When I use the gain on my Boogie the tones are thick and creamy and silky smooth, and open and power chords do ring with a richly detailed kerrang. I?m sure this speaker would be great on its own with a lower wattage amplifier or within a 2x12 with another Cannabis Rex but I really find the match between the C-Rex and my RWB to be a perfect match. I am incredibly pleased with my current sound and I?m about 98% to my holy grail tone (though the Rex sounded great out of the box I believe it still needs a good workout to break-in the hemp cone).

Reliability : No Opinion
Appears solidly built and considering the fact that it's rated at 50 watts. Since it?s my auxiliary speaker plugged in at 4 ohms I won?t blow it out.

Customer Support : No Opinion
As I mentioned, I spoke with Bernie quite a few times to talk about a perfect match and he was incredibly helpful! I valued his opinion even more when he informed me he uses a Cannabis Rex as his primary speaker. Lastly ? and most importantly ? Bernie?s prices were the best I?ve found; he was $25 lower than his competitors! (Way to go Bernie!). His shipping was prompt and the speaker was professionally packaged. He even informed me if I wasn?t happy with it I could return it within two weeks and try a different speaker! (I don?t think that?ll be happening? ;-) You can check him out at http://www.bltsound.com.

Overall Rating : 10
So far so good! Like any amp with a new speaker I still need to make minor tweaks to my sound. But - within the first 5 minutes ? like the RWB - I knew I was onto something good. The Cannabis Rex is a dynamite speaker and I can?t wait to use it with my rig when I enter the studio (later this month!) and at my upcoming gigs!
