I installed two cannabis rex on my peavy classic 50 2x12. after two rehearsals and one live show,I'm convince that its a perfect match for the peavey classic 50. I dont know about the smokey sound thats discribe by eminence website, but I do know it has incredible warmth, perfect chunky bass response on the drive channel when doing rythms,as well as clarity. I dont use pedals I only use the clean and overdrive/distortion on the amp, which sounds awesome with these speakers by the way. solo notes are warm and round for lack of better term. my set up is basicaly strat body(alder wood with wipeonpoly),humbucker on the bridge, and single coils on neck and middle, and vintage U.S.A tremolo, and maple neck maple fretboard. oh yeah! cable from guitar to amp he! he! Clean sound is sweet,overdrive/distortion is just AWESOME!which is basicaly I'm on 80% of the time. nuff said go buy it.....

Very Balance speakers! it does well with my Peavy classic 50 2x12,if I had a 2x12 extension cabinet,I would install two more cannabis rex. overall its the best match I think for the peavey classic 50 I've tried the private jack,GB-12,man o war,red white and blues, they all sound great! but by far the most balance for both clean channel and the drive/distortion on the amp is the Cannabis Rex. Its very versatile for all styles.

A hemp-cone speaker, designed with help from John Harrison at a Brown Soun, famous for their Tone Tubby speakers, used by Eric Clapton and many pros.
It's a cermanic manget speaker, and handles 50 watts RMS.
It's the only hemp-cone speaker anywhere near this price, and is very well-built with nice materials and workmanship.

I've been using Tone Tubbies for a few years in my vintage Fenders, and my Victoria low-powered Twin. I love their round soft, a soft edge to the notes, but with a full-frequency range. They let you cut through without being too bright, even with a Tele bridge pickup with the tone all the way up.
I saw a new Fender Deluxe Reverb Reissue on sale for a really low price, so I bought it and decided it would make a great club amp.
I thought it would be perfect to try the new Eminence Cannabis Rex, since I couldn't really afford another Tone Tubby at the time.
Great news: the Cannabis Rex has all the great sound quality of the Tone Tubby speakers. It definitely has its own voice, it's not a copy, per se. But it has those great characteristics of fatness, warmth, rich lows and mids, and sparkling highs that are never piercing.
I put some Tung Sol reissue tubes in, biased it hot, and replaced the (poor quality,) speaker cable with a Monster 1000 cable.
The end result? The amp sounds almost as good as my '64 Deluxe Reverb with a Tone Tubby. It's not as full and rich as the '64, but it's opening up nicely. It's actually louder, and the tremolo and reverb are even better.
The Cannabis Rex is a great speaker with tons of tone, and is a real bargain for anyone who likes a warm, but clear, U.S.-voiced speaker.
It's not for the Celestion crowd, (check out the Eminence Red Coats for that sound.)
But if you want a classic American amp sound, you can't go wrong with this speaker.
It works especially well for rich clean tones, smoky overdrive tones, and for letting Fender or bright Gibson or Gretsch guitars cut through without being harsh.
A terrific sound, well-made and a great value.

12", 8 or 16 ohms, 38 oz. magnet, 8 mounting holes, and a 50 Watt power rating. Zero doping around the hemp cone and surround. Has a protective rubber ring around the magnet and thick front and rear gaskets, for rear- or front-mounting. They???ve got every "feature" that a guitar speaker could possibly have. The matte-black finish and American flag sticker are distinctive yet subtle-looking in an open-backed combo.

I've got this speaker in my freshly re-tubed and biased Fender '65 Deluxe Reverb Reissue (a.k.a. DRRI) but I've also tried it from the "speaker out" of my Peavey TransTube Studio Pro solid-state amp for comparison. I'm using American Strat and Tele guitars, both with vintage-style Lindy Fralin single-coils. The speaker's a couple weeks old and I've given it a fair break-in, but I get the sense from others that it'll continue to break-in for a while longer.
To describe this speaker in a few words, I'd have to say: full, fat, smooth, and clean. The lows are firm & fat; the mids and highs are pretty solid as well, but not in a harsh way. There is little to no speaker breakup at louder volumes, and the speaker is generally neutral-sounding and doesn't color the amp's sound as much as a British-type speaker would. Some reviewers have referred to the Cannabis Rex as "smoky" or "greasy," and although I don???t hear that with my single-coil pickups, I can see how the speaker's smoothness could create that feel with humbuckers.
Having tried four different Patriot speakers in the last year, I would make the following comparisons: The Cannabis Rex is pretty similar to the Red White & Blues (a nice neutral, balanced speaker) but more clean and "solid" feeling, with a more pronounced midrange punch. It could also be a cleaner version of the Texas Heat (fat and punchy) with less of the aggressive "crunch". If you want your Fender amp to sound loud, clean, and punchy, this is the best speaker for you. Pretty good in a Deluxe, but a pair of them would be downright killer in a Twin Reverb.

Many of the Eminence Legend, Patriot, and Red Coat speakers have very high power ratings (the Cannabis Rex is uncommonly "low" at 50 W) and the speakers appear to be well-built and well-packaged. They really put forth a sense of quality and trustworthiness.

Alright, first of all, please ignore the review by drpoyer submitted on 09/12/2005-- as is unfortunately the case with many H-C reviewers, the guy clearly doesn't have a clue and his review is not helpful at all. And for that matter, you should take ALL of these reviews (mine too) with a grain of salt, and go try some speakers (several different ones) for yourself. Reading about tone is no substitute for actually hearing it.
That being said... I think the Cannabis Rex is an excellent speaker-- probably one of the best, if not THE best, Patriot (American/Fender-ish/Jensen-ish sounding) speaker. Its only competition in my book is the Red White & Blues, a spectacular 75 W speaker that I love in my higher-wattage solid state combo. But for now, in my 22 watt DRRI, I'll keep the lower-wattage Cannabis Rex in there and let it further break in over time.
This speaker would be an excellent choice for any 20-30 watt amp where you're looking to get really nice smooth cleans and moderate overdrive, or push the amp into the fat & punchy Fender direction. The Deluxe Reverb, Blues and Hot Rod Deluxe, etc., would all sound great with a Cannabis Rex. Also a perfect choice for the Peavey Classic 30 (unless you want a more British sound, in which case the Private Jack is amazing).

I love the speakers because they have added to my choice of tone. Full time Blues Band, doing most of the lead work.
Styles: Clapton, Buddy Guy, Albert King, a little BB.
I like a tone that's driven, but smooth, good natual sustain, warm cleans, and I've found these to be my best choice.
I replaced both Weber Ceramics and Alnicos and a Red Coat as well as the stock Fenders.
I found these to be a great surprise.....

Brand new speakers...um, I guess I would rank "features" as versatility...in which case, these seem pretty versatile to me. Everyone seems to say they are on the dark ebnd of the spectrum which to me translates to incredibly versatile......the hardest thing to dial in seems to be truly smooth mids and basses..and that is where this speaker shines....more of that in sound quality..but I would say very very versatile..so...9 for "features"

Using a pair in 1x12 birch, ported, closed back cabinets. Les Pauls,Strats,Teles,etc..running into a Voodoo Lab preamp->BBE Maxcom->Digitech Gsp2101 for effects only->Carvin T100 poweramp-> Cannabis rex cabs.
Wow. Ok..I also run a Keeley TS9 (for single coil guitars)and a Vox Clyde in front of all this krap. Really...very sweet tone. These do truly have smooth mids, basses and trebles. Not dark...rather the eq curve is set where you can throw a lot of different highs at it and not get brittle... just that beautiful sweet smoothness that Eric Johnson used to get, but with loads of gain...enough to play metal..yet smooth enough for fusion..sweet lead lines, singing legato...and burn the next second with warm, fat, round detail. I can't say enough about the speaker..I'm impressed. Switched from Celestion V30 (old well broken-in ones from England..not the new chinese stuff) compared to those...G12-75 or G12m70's (horrible) All those Celestion offerings are quite screechy in comparison. The V30's are certainly capable of more brutality...but these can do metal.I was a bit surprised at first...Played some Godsmack, Alice and chains,etc..it got heavy. Maybe a bit smoother, but can handle all the gain you throw at it. Clean tones are great. distortion tones are great. Kind of a slow breakup...can get pretty loud before speaker distortion starts. I like them. Lots.

Eminence seemed friendly..no problem getting a replacement. Bernie at BLT sound is very nice, helpful,patient..helped expedite the return..best price on this speaker and lots of other Eminence offerings...I will only buy Eminence from now on...Made in the USA...I try to buy as much as possible domestically...and Celestion moved all their crap to China. Yuck.( my V30's,12-75's and g12-70s were all Brit stuff at least...)
Had P50's in my VHT Pitbull..they were nice..a bit midrangey..these are better...but might try the V12's or Governors to get that V30 brutality without the spikey highs someday. Bernie is a good guy to talk speakers with...he will point you in the right direction.

Been playing over 20 years. Have a bunch of guitars. Some amps..recording stuff...no real junk..all decent stuff. I really do love these speakers. They have taken my rig to another level. I have always struggled with getting an extremely high gain sound with smooth attack...it has always come with too much treble or muffled darkness. I have never had this happy medium without the expense of losing detail...I get great attack..with no sharp, brittle highs. I love pretty much everything about these...I hate the fact that I don't have a 4x12 cab to throw these in at the moment..That would be insane.:) My fingers get cravings to play. Yum. Gotta go...tubes are warmed up..:)

I purchased the rex speaker to use in my hot rodded 65 fender deluxe. I was amazed at the great response of the speaker at all volumes and the smooth tone that the hemp cone provides. I play primarily rock and country and this speaker combined with the 65 deluxe are a match made in heaven.

No matter how much or little gain use the speaker responds well. It also respond to picking attack and minor tonal changes even at low volumes. I am using a fender nashville tele with joe glaser g bender, dimarzio tone zone t in the bridge position, fast track 1 in the middle, and a jason lollar mini humbucker in the neck. My second guitar is a hot rod 57 reissue stratocaster with dimarzio super distortion s in the bridge and fender scn pickups in the mid and neck possitions. The cannabis rex combined with the deluxe really allows you to distinguish between guitars and pickups, as well as letting you effects ring through clearly.

I was determined to get more sound out of my Twilighter 260 (same as Magnatone 260). Those stock oxford alnicos were only hinting at the potential of this amp. Have been curious about the CRex, did some research and figured I'd match a CRex to a RWB. My amp tech has a test enclosure with both of those speakers, several other of the new Emminence in there. I was able to hook my 260 up and try them. The CRex had it ... whatever it is, that speaker had lots of it, way more than the others. I threw down for 2 of them on the spot.
The amp is transformed. Significantly louder for starters. It's not just volume. Everything is bigger. No harshness, no mud either. People say this is a dark speaker. Maybe when matched to a darker amp. With this amp, with highly effective tone shaping controls and a very balanced set of tones to begin with, the CRexs are perfect. SMOOTH, warm, big bass, round, but clearly defined tones. Best of all with my 335. It's a jump blues sound I've been looking for. Totally impressed with these speakers.

I play lots of blues, rootsy stuff, some standard tuning, some open tuning and slide. Main guitars are an old strat, G&L tele, old 335. There is no one best sound. I'm not looking for a do it all amp or speaker. That said, the CRexs took an already sweet amp and turned it stage worthy, made it sound the way I thought it could. I wish all gear experiments could go this well. I'll probably put this speaker into at least one other amp. Great tone!

I bought this out of curiosity. I currently am not sure where I will use it, but it is a very interesting sounding speaker.
Strong and big bass, warm and fat midrange, round treble end. It has an almost "greasy" thick sound, definitely something different than the average rock speaker.
Clean sounds are rich and sound great, warm and full. A great speaker to fatten up a thin-sounding setup. I love this things clean sound a lot, it's not as clear as other speakers (notably the Black Powder I have reviewed here), but makes up in character and warmth without sounding aggressive & harsh as V30/G21t-75/Governor. I will try it in a Fender tube combo I have standing around in my basement when I have time.
Crunch and highgain is fat. You can get good metal sounds out of it if you don't mind the "extra fat" from the speaker; you need a bit more gain than on other speakers to get it to sound right IMO, but I must say I did not find the low end overly boomy or not tight enough with a Marshall or 5150 (maybe other modern amps would be too much). The best part is actually IMO that this speaker adds its own signature characteristic. Don't get me wrong: The speaker won't match other speakers in brutality or power or heavyness when it comes to metal, it can rather hold its own sound which might just be what you are looking for.
Blues leads sound very fat and nice through this speaker.
I give it 9 points simply because it is so wonderfully different and yet great-sounding.

I play rock/blues harp. I got this to use with low watt amps that break up really easily. Recently played a small bar with a Masco amp that breaks up too easily and doesn't get loud enough with my 4x8 cab (with vintage Jensens). Put in a small cab 1x12. It was perfect. It's super efficient, so it got plenty loud. It was smooth and mellow, which paired with this amp (which is raucus) was just right. Really nice for harp. There's no ice-pick in this speaker.
You must BREAK IT IN. Sounded terrible out of the box. 20 hours with my stereo blasting through it and it was a different speaker.

Just what I was looking for. Smooth, mellow high end, plenty of lows. This is what makes a good harp speaker. If you're looking for the speaker to break-up, this is not the one. But for a nicely distorting amp, just right. Or, if you're going for a warm, smooth tone, it would work with a clean amp.

well I first put this speaker since it is a 12" in front of my deltablues 15 just to see how the delta would sound as I am looking for a better speaker then the blue marvel 15" that came with it. well it wasn't as loud as the 15 { I unhooked the 15"}but the sound was way better so I turned it up and man was I impressed at how good it sounded. it gave the delta blues a new life.
so I had bought it for my old 77 peavey classic after much researh on speakers and having a legend 125 in it already I was looking for an american sound like a fender twin and all I can say is it sounds better then most twins I have heard. I used to have the evil twin and it sounded good but this peavey sounds great now. every note stands out.now I am betwixed a rock and a hard place as I was thinking about putting a red fang 12" in the delta bluesafter changing out the 15" baffle of course but the rex sounds so good. what do I do now?

That said I have probably over 50 speakers total related to guitar gear and lots more including PA gear and the Cannabis Rex is 1 of the best. I've had 3 ... 1 blew without warning in the middle of playing (not at a gig fortunately) I was bummed as though I've owned loads of speakers , played for a long time and own many amps and cabs I've only blown 4 speakers that I can remember in my life (1 Celestion Blue in a Vox ac30, 1 Naylor, 1 old Cele g12-70, and this one) ...
Eminence replaced it under warranty for free and VERY QUICKLY .. As for Reliability as a result of that 1 blowing , I won't post an opinion. My other 2 have been perfect and I play 50-100 watt amps thru them regularly at pretty loud volumes. I'd have to suspect it was a fluke , as does occur with speakers!

I think the Cannabis Rex's I own are some of the best guitar speakers ever. I'm a 'rock 'player who plays loud and many different varieties from Hendrixesque to current nu-metal to blues and fusion. They sound best cranked, are medium volume compared to all the others out there (i.e. Webers, Celestions, Ev's, Sholz, Jbl, Naylor, etc) , and are very rich , warm , balanced, smokey , and just plain excellent sounding. They excel with cleans and with overdrive and with heavy distortion (FOR ME) so I find them to be nothing short of excellent. I don't know if the previous reviewer has a completely different playing style than me, way different ears, or had defective CR's, but my experience has been so different I felt the need to post. I basically use humbucker-equipped guitars, both solid and semi-hollow for blues, jazz and pop. I play for my church every other Sunday.
I used the CR to replace a stock Jensen P12N in a Heritage Patriot 50 combo. The Jensen was just shy of OK for me but didn't have enough mids.
The CR definitely had more punch than the stock speaker but was still very smooth. Also, the CR lends more definition to the high frequencies. While I lost some of the lows, the Heritage still has the best low-end of any combo I've owned. But since I liked the lows on this amp so much, I'm knocking a point off for the loss.
The speaker also beefed up my overdrive and distorted sounds from my pedals (Reverend Drivetrain II, Barber Direct Drive, ProCo Vintage Rat, etc.) Tones got fuller without getting muddy.
Not a lot of speaker break up unitl it's cranked. The Jensen broke up a little earlier than I preferred and the CR doesn't even break a sweat at similar volumes.
Check out my review of the Heritage Patriot 50 elsewhere on this site for the complete scoop.

It's only been a few weeks since I installed the speaker, but Eminence stuff has never let me down before. I don't expect this one to either. If it blows up, don't worry; there'll be another post here as soon as possible! :-)

Eminence has always been great about answering e-mails. I haven't had any need to contact them for the CR, but my past experiences warrant a high mark in this area for 'em.

Great speaker! For me it really represents that "American Sound" with some "British Charm." It's very clear sounding with just enough fullness. I definitely dig the price I paid for it, too. It was a great match for this amp without compromising its great tonality.
Yup I'd buy another. Only reason I wouldn't is if I found a better sounding Eminence speaker.
Peace!

cannabis rex 50 watt guitar speaker with a hemp cone

i'm using the rex thru a mesa boogie mark 1 reissue 1x12 combo--when i first received the amp, i wasn't sure if the wattage of the rex could handle the speaker--but i was so intrigued and impressed by the tone of it--so just for experimentation, i put in a weber chicago(80 watt)ceramic magnet speaker and felt that altough it had somewhat more 'headroom', it had nowhere near the sweetness of the rex--so i had the rex re-installed and the amp sounds so much better--to anyone who is using this thru a 100 watt amp, remember that the rex can take 100 watts peak power--and the break-up that i get running it this way is not harsh or trebly--its very smooth--in fact, i'd have to say that this is one of the very best speakers on the market--i would imagine(and certainly hope, considering the price)that a tone tubby hemp cone would sound even nicer, but at $70, the rex is too much of a bargain--

Strat clone through a 20W Traynor YGM3 1-12". Used to replace stock Marsland (blah!). The speaker isn't even broken in and my amp sounds much better, although considering what was in it that might not be a fair comparison.
With this speaker I can get smoky smooth blues sounds to nice clean jazz/country licks just by moving the EQ on my amp. When I crank up the volume and overdrive the poweramp the speaker doesn't break up and I get smooth yet articulate low end with sparkly mids and highs. A nice low fat rock/blues sound.
Sounds great for my style of playing.

I'd gig with it only because my amp is built like a brick s&!t house
that'll keep the speaker safe from cigarettes and alcohol.

Been playing for a few years, still working on my own style. If it were stolen I'd find the first idiot trying to roll the cone for smokes and beat them over the head with the magnet.
I did some research on other brands (celestion, jbl, jensen, etc)with similar specs and thought this would be the best one for the money.

It is a 12", 8 ohm speaker from Eminence's Patriot Series. The Cannabis Rex is Eminence's answer to the "Tone Tubby" hemp cone speaker with a ceramic driver which they've developed to their own specifications. It is made right here in the USA in Eminence, KY.
I play a 60 watt Mesa/Boogie Mark III 1x12 combo that I purchased back in 1987. I originally had a Celestion G12H-100 (British speaker; not Chinese) put in for added bite (it came with a Black Shadow speaker). I also purchased at the time a Boogie ported 1x12 cabinet with an EV 12L.
Since I play blues, blues-rock, an jazz, I was looking to update my sound to a smoother, bluesier, creamier tone.
In order to achieve my desired tone, I have first replaced the stock Celestion with an Eminence Red, White & Blues (see my review http://www.harmony-central.com/Guitar/Data/Eminence/Red_White_and_Blues-01.html) because the G12H didn?t give me the tone that I wanted and it also sounded a bit ?brittle? to my ears. I absolutely adore the RWB speaker and was looking for a great match to pair it up with; I found it in the Cannabis Rex.
Don?t get me wrong; the EV-12L that I was using was a great speaker, particularly since it was housed in a Boogie 1x12 ported cabinet. But to my ears the EV always had a sort of ?generic? sounding and wasn?t very warm. Just like the RWB I did a lot of due diligence and read up on hemp cone speakers. Since my Boogie puts out 60 watts it wasn?t a good idea to use it as my primary speaker (sometimes I?ll play out with just the Boogie MkIII and not my extension 1x12 cabinet) because I can risk blowing it. (I do play loud!) So I read up on the Tone Tubbys and the Eminence Cannabis Rex. Certainly not to take away anything from Tone Tubbys (a friend of mine has them in a 2x12 cabinet and SWEARS by them) but I just wasn?t prepared to spend $275 for the AlNiCo or $125 for a ceramic. I then read on that the ceramic hemp cones work best in closed and ported cabinets whereas the AlNiCos work best in open backs. I the found out that there all of the hemp cones are made at an ?undisclosed location in Chicago? (see article in Sterophile: http://www.stereophile.com/news/053104hempcones/) are Tone Tubby licensed the hemp cone technology to only one other manufacturer: Eminence. I even obtained the recent write up in Guitar Player as well as made numerous phone calls to speaker retailers about their opinions on the Cannabis Rex.
"Bernie? at BLT Sound was incredibly helpful and earned by business. I told him my primary guitar is a Heritage 535 with Seymour Duncan Seth Lover humbuckers (tone to die for!). I told him I was looking for a companion to my RWB so I can achieve that holy grail of tone, which to me is a blend of Robben Ford?s sweet syrupy tone and Larry Carlton?s smoothness. I did not want a speaker that would make the guitar sound tubby or blurred. He recommended the Cannabis Rex as the companion speaker and even added that he uses this one himself (I believe in a ported cabinet too)! Thanks Bernie ? your suggestion was right on the mark!

I could not be happier with my purchase! The speaker has exactly wanted I read about: warm, smooth, and balanced through the bass and midrange and has a rising treble response with a complex high-end texture that is very pleasing to my ears. The clean tones are indeed open and chimey with incredible clarity. When I use the gain on my Boogie the tones are thick and creamy and silky smooth, and open and power chords do ring with a richly detailed kerrang. I?m sure this speaker would be great on its own with a lower wattage amplifier or within a 2x12 with another Cannabis Rex but I really find the match between the C-Rex and my RWB to be a perfect match. I am incredibly pleased with my current sound and I?m about 98% to my holy grail tone (though the Rex sounded great out of the box I believe it still needs a good workout to break-in the hemp cone).

Appears solidly built and considering the fact that it's rated at 50 watts. Since it?s my auxiliary speaker plugged in at 4 ohms I won?t blow it out.

As I mentioned, I spoke with Bernie quite a few times to talk about a perfect match and he was incredibly helpful! I valued his opinion even more when he informed me he uses a Cannabis Rex as his primary speaker. Lastly ? and most importantly ? Bernie?s prices were the best I?ve found; he was $25 lower than his competitors! (Way to go Bernie!). His shipping was prompt and the speaker was professionally packaged. He even informed me if I wasn?t happy with it I could return it within two weeks and try a different speaker! (I don?t think that?ll be happening? ;-) You can check him out at http://www.bltsound.com.

So far so good! Like any amp with a new speaker I still need to make minor tweaks to my sound. But - within the first 5 minutes ? like the RWB - I knew I was onto something good. The Cannabis Rex is a dynamite speaker and I can?t wait to use it with my rig when I enter the studio (later this month!) and at my upcoming gigs!

I'm using the Cannibus Rex with my Peavey Classic 30. Actually, the speaker is housed in a seperate cabinet I made that's about the same size as the as C30's cabinet. I'm using this as the main with no speaker in the C30's cab. I did this for two reasons. 1) The amp sounds much better. 2) The tubes will last a hell of a lot longer by not being in such close proximity to the speaker. The C30's a great little amp, but it has to be one of the worst for tube life with a speaker in the same cabinet as the chassis.
I've tried about 5 other speakers for this amp. All great speakers in they're own but not with the C30. Although I could hear the differances with the bass and mid's with each speaker change the one quality that I was trying to tame always came thru which was those "spikey-ice pickey highs" from the amps OD channel. The Cannibus Rex is the first speaker to tame the spike down considerabley. It can still bite but it's nowhere near as annoying as it was before. As a result the high end seems to be much more articulate and not a garbled mess of highs like before. The hemp cone is suppose to have a dampening effect on the high end which is what the C30's OD channel desperatley needed. The bass end is smooth but tight and the mids punch out without sounding barkey.

I don't know if this speaker is the ultimate for a C30, but it got me a lot close to what I like to hear compared to everthing else that I've tried so far. I noticed the differance in the high end as soon as I first tried it, and I was very impressed with what I was hearing. The hemp cone is very, very stiff feeling compared to the other speakers I've tried so it may take a bit longet to break in compared to others. But again, this is the best speaker I've heard yet for a Classic 30.

I recently got a Kendrick BG35 and this speaker seemed like a natural for the blues that I like. I play a couple of strats through this amp. One with a bridge humbucker. With the Jensen P12N that came in the amp it has a tone sort of like a cross between a Tweed and a Blackface amp. This speaker instantly turned the amp into a tweed model. I thought the change was drastic compared to the "slight coloration" mentioned in a previous review. I removed the speaker to save for another tweed amp project I've got waiting for me.

(bought new at Weber VST) --------it's a bloody speaker! what features!!! well, i can say that it sounds SWEET with a neck single-coil through my Classic 30, and treats overdrive really nicely using both my neck s/c and bridge humbucker pickups (i only use the bridge for distortion). so, i gots to give it an A for versatility as far as i can test it. i have to mention somewhere in this review about breaking it in - some speakers come into their own after an hour or two of hard playing, but this one DOES NOT! it (and other hemp speakers, i believe) needs a good hard ride for a week before you can hear it's greatness... but it's worth it, BELIEVE ME.

i got this to tame the harshness of the Classic 30, as it was supposed to have a "smooth, fat" high end. well, guess what, it has a "smooth, fat" high end! i changed tubes, switched from the stock speaker to an Alltone 1250 (which is a really nice speaker, but on the bright side), and everything helped, but nothing cured the Ice Pick Syndrome at high volumes without sounding muffled. the C-Rex has a sweet, smooth, sting on the high end when i really dig in in the upper registers without hurting - most importantly, it sounds very open, warm, and clear all the while. the C-Rex is very responsive to changes in picking style and position, and has great clarity in the midrange overall. the lows are thick, with a nice round chunk, but not overpowering. i'll never use another speaker in the Classic, it's pretty safe to say... for warm, clear, vintage tones, the Cannabis Rex is absolutely perfect.

this is a very impressive speaker for the money ($89!) - features a 'hemp cone', nice. this heavy speaker reminds me of a G12H anniversary model by celestion, balanced high and low. the smokey smooth part is interesting, there's a little low-mid coloration in there. very nice alone, i'm going to pair it with a deeper bassier sounding speaker in a 2X12 combo to fill in the flanks.

i paired this speaker with an orange ad30tc head, 30 watts class A, handles the signal nicely. i use decent mid grade guitars (ltd, epiphone), with duncan custom pickup jobs. the output is fierce and clear. they say speaker and pickup choice is half the battle with guitar playing, and in terms of tone i believe it.
