I use a Schecter Blackhawk with SD A8 bridge pickup.
I play metal and rock. love to shred and play power rhythms.
Here is my opinion of the speaker.
When i first plugged into the avatar 4x12 compared to my 1x12 with V30s in it, I heard a lack of high end. So i redid my eq on my amps and i could tell that it wasnt natural to turn up the high end cause it just destroyed the rest of the tonal response. You cant work around this lack of high end in the eminence legends v12. Maybe this speaker would be good for jazz where there is lack of highs. For metal it is not gonna do it for me.
I need upper mids.
So i took my one v30 out of my 1x12 and put it in the upper left slot of the 4x12 and right away i heard my old cleaner metal tone pop back out. So what im going to do is get one more v30 and criss cross the cab with v30s and eminence legends. the legends will shine more at higher volumes but i need those v30s for mid range definition.
hope this helps. not for metal i warn you!

Overall not a metal speaker. More mellow highs will kill your distortion signal from the start. you cant eq around it.
then your mids and lows will suffer as well, you will end up have to beef up all your levels and it will make your sound sound artificial just to make up for the lack of highs. not worth it.
thanks!

Bought these back in '01 as I was building a 4x12 cab for my Mesa Heartbreaker head. They were priced right at 45 bucks each. Turns out they were a great buy. They handle a lot of power at 120 watts each. They do not break up early, (I have a 2x12 cab with Eminence Governors, really fizzy distortion) but when they do it's nice and smooth. At low volumes, they have a nice flat response. Turned up, they break up just a little bit, but you still hear the sound of your amp, guitar and effects. No icepick in the ear. The treble is really subdued (more below). Good lows with this cab (an *old* peavey 4x12 cab from the early '80s). After 8 years, I still keep coming back to this cab. Playing live, they seem to have a more american sound, but on the recordings that we have made, you actually *can* hear the slight British midrange voice of the imported cones.

Every time I have contacted Eminence, they have been prompt to reply and have gone out of their way to accomodate me. Because of this, I now use Eminence speakers on all of my amps and cabs except for on old 4x10 that i use Jensen Mods in - but that's another tale...

The only thing that I am going to change is to replace one of the speakers in this cab with a regular Eminence Legend that I am using in a Pignose G60VR combo. It seems to have a bit too much treble, so I figure I'll take that out with one of the V12's and add just a bit of treble to the 4x12 cab and cut some of the treble from the combo

Speaker seemes to have tonal characteristics like a speaker using Alinco maganets. Nice balanced sound through the tonal spectrum. Needed a speaker that did not break up to early and would take care of the "fizzies" when using distortion channel. Tried the speaker in an Epiphone Valve combo 15 watt amp, peavey Valveking and Peavey Ultra 112. I also tried various other speakers such as a Celestion V30 and Eminence Red Fange. The V12 had really focused highs that were not fizzie with a midrange that was not overly bright and the bass was not to much. It really helped the peavey amps sound better more so than the V30. The V30 really had a deeper and more pronounced bass but the V30's highs were spikey and broken up. I found my tone controls more responsive with the V12. The V12 was a little week in the bass compared to the V30 and Red Fange but still very usable, bass tone was better with the higher watt Peavey Ultra 112 and it's 60 watts really helped the speaker sound it's best. Palm mutting not as great as other speakers but as it breaks in this may get better. The stock speaker in the Epiphone valve combo had put out more volume but broke up early and not allowing much clean headroom. The V12 helped in this area and worked quite well in the Epiphone amp, I got more clean headroom. The speaker seemed an alternative to a V30 as it had less bass and smoother focused highs that were not spikey and the V12 was not nasally like the Red Fange.

I liked this speaker right away. Especially matched with the combo I put it in (Randall Switchmaster 112), which is a really bright amp. I tried an Eminence Swamp Thang and hated it. I also tried an Emi GB12 and that was closer, but I felt I was almost there but not quite. When I saw this V12 at a local Music Go Round I bought it, thinking I could always return it and use the GB12. I was worried about the GB12's power rating too (50 watts vs. V12's 120 watts). Anyway, when i turned the amp on and played I knew I was keeping it. Has the british style crunch I like (I am a big G12T-75 fan) with a fat bottom and nicely cut highs. I comparison, the Swamp Thang had this buzz-saw high end in this combo.

I have played 27 years. I play Ibanez RG 550's with DiMarzio Super 3's, have a Marshall 3203 and a Peavey Rock Master/Classic 50-50, Marshall 1960 4x12's, and this Randall combo. I'll tell you right now, for this combo amp I would buy this speaker again, for sure. Perfect fit. I'm pretty excited because I've had this combo sitting around gathering dust & I've been out looking to buy a combo. The solution was cheaper than I expected, just a new speaker for the one I already own.

The high is not that screaming like many other types.
I have a very muddy sound, (swedish deathmetal like Dismember & Entombed) so it's important that i hear myself in the mix.
My sound is more stable now because the v12 gives me more low and volume than other types

I was'nt satisfied with the limited amount of clean headroom from the C30's clean channel and I thought that a more efficeint speaker would do this. The Legend V12 does BUT, it takes a while for the speaker to break in. When I first installed the V12 in my amp I had what seemed to be even less clean headroom than with the stock speaker. This is the first time I've replaced a speaker and at first I though it was defective. I've heard about the need to break a speaker in so I thought well, lets see. The one improvement that I did notice right away was how much better the high end sounded. Seemed to have more detail and the highs seemed to be a bit more rounded. I've had the speaker for about two months now and it's nice and broken in. Between changing the speaker as well as trying differant preamp tubes I think the amp sounds much better than It did before. The V12 seems to sound better with each passing week. I can now turn the amp up to about 5 on the clean channel, where before with the stock speaker I could only go to 3. So it helped out quite a bit. I don't know how this speaker would sound in any other amp, but I'm quite happy with the way it sounds in mine.

I purchased this speaker as a replacement for a Peavey Transtube Revolution 1x12 combo (same as Transtube Bandit but with an extra gain channel) that had blown its original Sheffield 1230. At first I considered another Sheffield, but I suspect Peavey's decision to use a low-efficiency 70 watt speaker (the Sheffield) in an 80 watt 1x12 combo was part of the reason I had to replace the speaker in the first place... I am very happy with the results I get with the V12. The V12 really brought the clean channel alive compared to the Sheffield, and the amp is much louder than it was before. The distortion channels are warm and singing, with a hint of "woody" edge. With a power rating of 120 watts, I don't have to worry about blowing the speaker again. The higher power rating is especially important if you ever use your 1x12 combo in jam situations where you might end up playing alongside 4x12 cabs. One point to consider, the V12 does not have an extremely bright high-end. The push-bright feature on the clean channel is still noticable, but it is subdued. A tad more high-end might be nice for the clean channel, but for distortion, having the highs rolled off around 4.5khz means it won't get "buzzy" or "fizzy". If you use clean sounds only, you might want to look at an Eminence M10 to get more high end, but if you use distortion regularly, the V12 is an excellent choice.

I'm giving it 9 because there isn't such a thing as a perfect speaker... yet! I also have a Peavey Transtube Bandit with a Sheffield 1230 which is not blown, and I am thinking of replacing that 1230 with another V12 just to get the improved tone and higher volume. In my opinion, the V12 is a better choice for Peavey's Transtube combos than the original Sheffield speakers. I hear the V12's sound good in tube amps too, but I can't comment on that. Works very well for what I'm using it for.

Dont get me wrong I love celestions, but now since I steped into the World of Eminence there is no going back. (As long as they continue to keep their production in the states..)

I bought a Peavey Bravo and retubed it with Sovtek EL 84H output tubes and 3 NOS AMERICAN MADE 12AX7 preamp tubes. The improvement was noticable, but not dramatic enough to give me the sound that I had bought this amp to produce for me. I use a BOSS ME 5 for boost and minimal effects, going into the front end of this amp and I needed an amp that could give me the sweet cleans of Vintage rock 'n roll & surf music styles all the way up to modern high-gain Santana / Van Halen tone and the stock speaker just couldn't cut it. I play single coils and humbucking pups through this amp and the stock speaker's bottom was flubbing out on me. The top end was way too fuzzy and piercing (like a celestion G12-75...waaaay piercing!) The mid-range was either pure honk or non-existent. Not good. I knew the EL 84 tone signature deserved a better voice than the stock speaker so I started researching a suitable substitute for the Bravo.
I started emailing Dave at Avatar about a suitable replacement . He gave me some suggestions in the Eminence line. I had bought some of the Eminence Vintage alnico speakers some years ago and I really liked them so I thought I'd try a ceramic magnet speaker from them. Why not? For the record, I'm not a huge fan of Celestion speakers. In my opinion, they sound just a little too harsh when playing clean.
Speaking of Celestions, I wanted a speaker with the smooth cone break-up characteristics of the Vintage 30 but with a better definition in the lows and a top-end cutoff that could give me an attenuation of the amp's high end. The Eminence V12 turned out to be perfect for this. The V12 tops out at around 4.5K, as opposed to 5.5 or 6K for Vintage 30 Celestions. The Bravo's clean channel "bright" switch has no noticable effect on the sound, now that the V12 is installed, reflecting the attenuated higher frequencies.
The cleans are rich and full...very fat without any harsh high end, and when the clean channel is cranked this speaker's break-up is smooth, creamy and articulate. Some folks may not like the fact that the top end is not as pronounced as the Celestion Vintage 30, but I love it. After a brief break-in period, this speaker sounds excellent playing clean or "cranked" on the clean channel.
The distortion channel is greatly improved, too. With the V12 installed, I can get a nice, open "overdrive" sound for blues and vintage rock, which the old stock speaker could never seem to get when the gain was set to lower levels. Cranking up the gain and volume takes this speaker into a well defined (no longer muddy!) midrange honk, great for bluesy rock. Cutting the channel's midrange tone pot back to about 50% delivers a very cool, modern rock tone. When the gain boost is engaged, this speaker flat out produces the high-gain tone of a hot rodded Marshall without any of the high end fuzz / fizz. When I think of high-gain tone...this is what I hear. It's a real treat to have it available in a nice 25 watt package, pushing a speaker like this with an SPL of 100. Yeah, it's plenty loud for gigging, too.
In all of these tone / distortion signatures that I mentioned, the definition (on single notes and especially on chords) is far superior to the original speaker. The cone breakup of this V12 is just sensational...very smooth and responsive to the amp's volume and tone controls.
For what I was looking for, this speaker has met or exceeded my expectations. It is loud, has plenty of well-defined bottom but not too much top-end and a cone breakup that yields a nice, smooth definition. I won't say that this peaker has the tone curve for everyone (try the GB12 if you need that high-end sizzle that the V12 is missing, for example) but I have to say that it's DEAD PERFECT for what I needed.

Been playing since the 60s. I KNOW what I want to hear from my equipment. I buy amps, processors, tubes and guitars for specific tone characteristics. I don't have a whole lot of gear these days because I've done all the experimenting that I care to do. Now it's just two amps (Peavey tube Bravo and Peavey solid state Revolution) and a few guitars with a BOSS ME 5. I have found that speakers are at least 50% of my sound, so I buy good sounding ones for my amps and cabinets. I grew tired of the "Celestion sound" over the years. I'm not knocking it mind you...Celestions are great sounding speakers. It's just a preference of mine that I like a warmer tone.
I have a 2 12 with Eminence Alnicos in it, which sounds just great in conjunction with the two Peavey amps. I chose the V12 for the Bravo because I wanted the versatility of the amp to shine through a decent voice when using the amp as a single, stand-alone unit, or in the 2 12 configuration. The V12 did that for me, as I thought it would. I would buy it again. For the money, it's impossible to beat!

I have a Marshall DSL100 running thru a 1960 Lead Cabinet. I run a Gibson V with EMG81s thru it..I play Anything Metal. The Cab originaly came with 4-Celestion G12T-75s. These speakers have the most insane crunch I have ever hear on my life! But the problem with them is that they lack bass..and are too bright. I always had the treble at 4 or less..and it was still hard to get the bass I wanted. I was going to get some Celestion G12h30s..but I heard good reviews about this speaker...so I bought 2 of them from avatarspeakers.com Dave is a great guy, yhe recommended these for adding lows. I installed the bottom of the 4x12 Cab. WOW!! They sound Great!! They are Very Mellow. They don't have much highs..but they have Very Strong Bass and a nice mids...very smooth. My sound is so much better now. I get Very Muscular Bass..specially when I palm mute! THey combination of the trebly Gt-12t's on top..and the Bassy V-12s Is working for me at the time. I can cut thru and Have a nice-rich Low end! IT's very good for Metal. It sounds good clean too! It's a hell of a deal for only $38.00 each. Great for a mellow-thick sound.

These speakers are great for certain sounds. Some solid state Fender amps I have sound much better when they drive my Legend V12 cabs instead of the stock speaker. My CRATE VC50 Head also sounds fantastic through these speakers. (Looks like the prior reviewer here has one of these, too.) Fender tube amps shooting for that Fender vintage clean should look elsewhere. These speakers don't do that. I have compared these to Celestions (Greenbacks, Vintage 30s and Blue Alnicos), Eminence 122s and 125s and the Reverend Alltone. In the two applications I use them for, no other speaker has sounded better than my Legend V12.

These speakers are rated to handle 120 watts RMS. My tube head is 50 watts. The solid state amps I use are 90 watts. These speakers have never broken down and I really don't expect them to. I'm running them well within their tolerances.

I've e-mailed Eminence several times to ask questions about different speakers, their tonal qualities and some technical data. They have always gotten back to me in a day or less. Tough to beat!

A tremendous speaker for the money. No speaker can do it all - unless you are looking for that one trick pony. I have found two applications in which these speakers excel, and I'll be using them for what they do best. No need to spend $100 bucks on a Celestion when I am getting great tones out of these for half as much.

I have 4 of the Eminence Legend V12 12" guitar speakers. They are just over a year old. Mine are of the 16 ohm variety. These are also available in 8 ohm versions. They are rated to handle 120 watts. These are guitar speakers, so the features are pretty basic, but that is as it should be. I specifically purchased these speakers to try to tame the high frequency overkill on a pair of Fender solid state guitar amps I was using. They did that, but then I started experimenting with them to see what they could do when being used with better quality equipment - like tube amps.

I play mostly rhythm guitar. Our band plays lots of covers with a good portion of them being pop standards. We do some Police, U2, Oasis, the Clash, Blondie - lots of pop, punk/pop and Brit pop. I also like to play lots of 60s covers - anything from the Beatles to Cream and from Hendrix to the Turtles.
The scoop is that the Legend V12s are supposedly modeled after the Celestion Vintage 30s. I've had these over a year, used them plenty and I don't hear it. It just ain't there! To my ears, it is not a Vintage 30 clone in the least, and I am pretty familiar with the Vintage 30s. I have tried the Legend V12s and the Celestion Vintage 30s in a variety of amps including Fender Hot Rod Deluxes, Sunn T50 Combo, Sunn Model T head, Crate VC 50 Head, modified Fender Deluxe 112 plus solid state amp, Boogie Dual Rectifier and others. The Legend V12 is definitely not as good on the highs, as the technical specs pretty much suggest ( only 4.5khz high end). On the other hand, the Legend V12 is far superior to the Celestion Vintage 30s on the lows. The Legend V12s bring very nice bottom end to any multi-speaker cab. The trick is to combine them with another speaker that will compliment by adding highs - like a Greenback or a Vintage 30. The flexibility of my 2 X 12 with a Greenback and a Legend V12 is perfect. My 2 X 12 cab sounds great "Fender clean" (2 or 4 position on the Strat), humbucker clean or overdriven.

This is a 120 watt rated speaker which I use in a 2 X 12 cab driven mostly by 40 or 50 watt tube amps. This speaker should last a lifetime.

I have e-mailed Eminence a couple of times. Each time they responded within 24 hours. I have owned 6 Eminence speakers to date. I have never had a problem with any of them, and that implicitly says something good about the quality of their products.

I've been playing guitar and bass for about 25 years, and have owned lots of different guitars, amps, speakers, tubes and other equipment in the process. These speakers do a great job of adding bottom end to multi-speaker guitar cab. I do not recommend using them alone unless you are using an amp/guitar combination that needs high frequencies tamed a bit. This is a good sounding, good quality speaker for the money.
