For me its simple and easy, but not perfect.
A second master level and reverb poti woul make this more pleased.

First, the Vintage 30 Speaker makes this Amp sounds bad,
At home it was just "ok" for practising at very low volumen, but something was missing, mhh. At my Band the Screamer sounds like a
broken box of wood, very muffy, this is a result of an open back and the V30, I test it with my 4x12 stack without the V30 and known what was wrong, so I changed the V30 against a Celestion Heritage and yeah, much more organic this way, now I play it with a 2x12 Marshall box modded with Heritages at 8 Ohm.
The Amp sound is cool for any style, the tubes make it sounds "real" but I also known 1x12 Amps that are much more expensiv and have a much more versatile or perfect sound. But I can live well with the screamer, because the louder the amp is - the better the sound comes. So I use it for small club gigs, or a/b it with my Mesa Lonestar. The Screamers basic sound is very "modern" and middy so perfect for Hard Rock, Metal and high speed licks. The only channel I dont like is the "chrunch", its to steril and bright and I prefer to use a overdrive as a better alternative. The Reverb unit is Ok at low and littel settings but when you turn it over 12 o clock position it washes the sound and gets a metalic steril undertone.
My main Guitar is a modded Fender Us Stratocaster and a Jackson SL2H Mahagoni ( Im a Strat type ) but I also have a 68 Gibson Paula and a Esp Horizon NT.
With the Screamer I use a Maxon delay ( perfect in the effect loop of the screamer ) and Od 9, TC chorus, a Simple Morley Wahwah, and a Boss tuner. But with good cables ( often underrated ).
My main Tunning is;
clean vol ; 11 oclock.
gain at 11
Bass at 1
midds at 1
highs at 10
pres. 10
Reverb at 10
Master volumen near 3 oclock.

Looks and feels like a solid, heavy Amp. The Tubes are at a good place at a natural wind circulation, so no burner here. There is nothing bad on it and this is the greatest at this Engl Amps, there build to get Rocked Hard.
After one week a Tube was blown away but the dealer give me a new one for free. Shit happens ;-)
So works well...but a tube changing will come the next weeks....

I would call it a good Mesa Boogie meets Rivera Clone with a own outstanding charakter.
its just a matter of personal taste and for the price and build quality its a very good deal.
but trust me _ change the muddy V30 speaker and you will feel better.
And if you have a extension cab...use it and turn the volumen up.

all the stuff has been mentioned. Great reverb. Treble Presence works very well and makes the amp extremely diverse in the Eq. Excellent effects loop and numerous amounts of speaker combinations. VLS is the exact same as dual master volumes except it doesn't have a control knob on it.
only reasons why i give this amp an 9 is because of the shared eq and gain and the fact that it doesn't come with a footswitch (i would pay the extra money if the Z-5 footswitch was included). However i justify this as this amp is very simple and i believe adding an eq in would damage the sound, therefore i give it a 9.
Sound Quality

Firstly this thing is loud! I practice below 1 and reherse with a band on 1/4 volume. It just gets way better as it gets louder. I play a fender american deluxe fat strat.
I'll go channel by channel:
Clean - awesome channel. Better than any other amp in it's price range and just about up there with amps around double the price. The bright switch is also great and i keep it on all the time. It is just amazing, and if you add reverb it gets better. i'm giving it a 10 for the price you pay for it.
Clean Hi Gain - a very odd channel yet fairly versitile. if you have the gain down and the neck pickup it practically plays clean without the warmth. However it can break up more than anyone needs it to. It is a bit thin but plays AC/DC stuff fairly well. However i wish it was more like a marshall's crunch and had the same kind of characteristics as you can't really play clean and break up on it. I'm giving it a 6.5 because i don't really care and will rarely use it, however i do say that it's only there for people who might enjoy maybe a minute or two of breakup and not play that sound forever.
Soft Lead - Great! Overlaps a bit with the clean hi gain, but not much. It plays classic rock great and sounds like the lead channel of a marshall. It is a little thin, but if you turn the bass up or the volume it is fixed. You can get a million sounds out of this channel and they are all great. i will give it a 9.5
Heavy Lead - believe me this has more than enough gain for a combo. this channel screams, while still staying virtually noiseless. It gives me the best neck pickup distortion i've heard. The eq also allows this channel to be very versitile in terms of treble. I'm giving it a 10 as if i put a quad on it, it gives an awesome distortion and that it is just great for the money you pay.

It says "fantastic value" on 10 for this category and i've got to give it that. It is the best you can get for the price. The Engl Screamer Combo is firstly great value ($100 more for a combo than the head) and when i get the money, i will buy a quad for it and it will sound better than almost all amps. I like this amp better than the Savage 120. It gives you 3 great sounds 1 average, apart to the many average sounds higher end amps have. Don't buy the amp with the most switches, buy the rawest amp with the best sounds.
this amp would also make a great amp to throw you effects on - great clean and excellent speaker and poweramp section.

Just want to ad that this is realy a great combo, its sound modern and not vintage like so it can sound like a Marshall Jcm 800 and also like a recto. but not like a twin or ac 30 !!
And what do you imagine about a open back 50 Watt V 30 Combo ??
its sounds good in youre bedroom but with a Band you MUST have a closed 2x12 or 4x12 !! Or you have a fish alu platet fishtank crap sound !
It has enough power to blow 2 4x12 !! Look the Amp from Tom Morello, 50 watt top in a 4x12 and did he sound like shit ??!! A 9 because its well worth the money but ther are better combos out ther that realy are a 10 !! You "I better writte how great the shit I have buy is, before I call myself stupid" people here at HC. I bought this amp new from a chain of music stores in the UK for ??649 in Nov 2004. That particular chain has since be bought out by another, changed name and no longer sell the Engl range (WHY?)
The features have been covered many times over, so won't repeat them.

This amp is extremely versatile. The clean sounds are among the best I have heard in 25 years of playing. I work as a professional live sound engineer and has been "borrowed" by several "name" players, one of which went out and bought one purely for the clean channel ("sounds like a twin but fits in the boot of my car"). Crunch does AC/DC or Georgia Satellites rhythm parts fine, soft lead does fine for me with my humbucker equipped PRS McCarty for the dirty stuff.
The last channel I rarely use, but I did make a Jap Telecaster sing with it like it never had before! I think the reverb is pretty naff. The tail is too long and is unusuable above 2. The bright switch is just that. Using the combo's own speaker, the amp lacks a little warmth, without cranking the bass to to 9, and the bright switch just makes matters worse.
Reliability

Pumping that much bass thru a poor single vintage 30 in an open cab is not recommended. I am about to replace the driver for the second time in 2 years. I am not a "bottom heavy" metal player. The amp gets quite heavy usage, up to 5 times a week, covering all kinds on styles, with allsorts of guitars. I have replaced the valve as precaution, but the originals were working fine and I still have them as back up.

I went in to the shop to buy a Yamaha SG2000s, I walked out with the guitar, and went back a week later and bought the amp I had tried it through! I had heard of Engl, but that was it. Would i recommend one? Yes, but with an extension cab. If it was stolen, I would probably buy the head version with a 4x12....
Anyone looking for an all round amp must try one of these. Forget modelling stuff. This will do the job and sound far better.

Its a new model from 2005/ 06
For my its versatile enough. I play styles from Hendrix, Guns N Roses to Metallica and sometimes a bit of jazz, classic, blues fusion.
It has 4 channels, a good effect loop, one reverb unit, inputs for one or two 8 / 16 ohm Loudspeakers. A Celestion V 30.
A simple standart Eq. wich is ok.
I use it at home, gigs, with my Band, Studio etc.
The 50 Watts tube power are enough for any venue.
I play it with a 2x12 Engl cab.
No, nothing to add, the simpler a amp is and the more tubes it has, the better it is ( for me ).
Sound Quality
:9
Its is a midrangy, very bassfull amp.
Clean is great, I can compare it with the Twin amp from a friend and its nearly the same sound quality, but the screamer has a different voice. The bright switch mellows the sound wich is very cool for clean sounds.
Chrunch "feels" a bit louder than the clean and some more highs are coming, the louder you set the clean volumen, the more gain is in the chrunch.
Lead is great for " classic " Rock sounds, great overdrive. But its better without the bright switch. ( more eggs ).
The heavy lead is a Hardrock Metal sound that is very cool. Lead lines can sound very full, screaming and with rich attack, wow !! But for chord playing I set the gain under 12 oclock.
The amp has a direct and un-compromissed voice, its spells exactlly what you are playing, no colouring or influence. So for "bad" players that can go bad, but for players with technik, that amp gives a 100% Pro. music instrument, I love it more and more I play it.
My set up; clean 10:30 o clock, bass, mids, highs, presence and lead volumen at 12 o clock, the reverb at 11 oclock, the main volumen like i need it. ( From Bedroom to Stadion its all possible ).
I play a Gibson Paula and a Esp Horizon II.
A Delay in the effect loop, wich sounds perfect and a wah direct in the input, great !! Also I only use it with the Z4 footswitch wich is all I need. ( The Z5 is to large ).

The clean is just great,? not so much compression like my 2001 Twin Amp,
And smoother than my Roccaforte Plexi Top. Its nearer to a Mesa Lonestar.
It has deepth but clarity and a beautyfull Bell chime Sound.
Its very hard to explain a sound, but if you need a fantastic allround Combo, check this one.
For the price, unbeatable. The clean can go loud enough to play with a double bass drummer ;-)
And when you play in a little club without a PA ? You must make something wrong in your
Buisenes work.
The chrunch is Ok but I play a Fulltone 69 Fuzz or a moded Tubescreamer in the clean
Channel for that. Oh and play with the bright switch on !! If you loose bottom
Put a little bit more bass in it.
The lead has tones of gaaiiiinnnn, I never put this over the 12 o clock.
( When I need some Pantera sounds I dail out the mids. )
You have 4 channels with one EQ, so mind this is shit, ? I play only the clean and the lead
Channel, in a allround setting. Because it sucks when you must turn the knops at a life gig every
Second song !! Oh and the reverb beats the Twin and my old Holy Grail. Its always on, at 10 O o`clock
Oh and the lead one is also loud enough.
My live gear ; Gibson Paula, Fender Strat. T Rex delay, moded Tubescreamer, Fulltone
69 Fuzz, Cry Baby 353Q,
Korg Dt 10 Tuner. And 2 channel switch?in the screamer 50...
Sometimes with a mesa 1 x 12 cab. To have the Speaker nearer to my ears
Because chairs sucks and also you have more air moving.
( for a 4 x 12, there is not enough power )
Studio gear ; Music Man Petrucci, Epiphone Nick Valensi Casino,
TC Electronics G major. Line 6 Pro Pod.
Different Amps. ( The Mesa Lonestar )

1x12 50w tube combo, made in 2003 (I bought it used). Cone is a Celestion Vintage 30, which kicks ass.
4 channels: Clean, Crunch, Soft Lead, Heavy Lead. ENGL prefers to call them 2 channels (Clean/Lead) with two "modes" each (Low Gain/High Gain). So you have only two switches in the front of the amp. It includes the VLS function, which is kind of booster (in fact, you have a pot, located in the back of the amp, which dials in the volume gap between the normal sound and the boosted sound).
All of this is switchable via footswitch, but... the damn footswitch is NOT INCLUDED. Also, the reverb and the boost can ONLY be kicked in via footswitch, i.e. no switches on amp. There are two ways to behave:
- buy the ENGL Z5 Footswitch (six switches, 180? here in Italy)
- get a normal, double-switch pedal, with a stereo jack plug, and switch channels. Another one can be used to kick in boost and reverb. Using single switches is not recommended because one function can be switched while the other IS ALWAYS ON. So if you use a single switch for the channels you don't have Clean and Lead but Crunch and Heavy Lead. No good.
I preferred to buy the Z5 because with normal switches I would have to push two buttons to switch between Clean and Heavy Lead, which is a typical "Metallica" situation.
Another point is the EQ: this thing has only got a single EQ, plus a Presence control for the Lead channels. Personally I LOVE this, because there are only a handful of knobs on the front of the amp, and if I want to crank something while playing, I can do it without any trouble. "Chicken-head" knobs make easy to SEE regulations... if you got a Mesa Recto, you can forget that. BUT, if you REALLY want separate EQ for each channel, this could be a big trouble.
Has a parallel effects loop, which I prefer to be switchable: not a big problem, though.
Almost forgot it has a "bright" switch, so if you got a Les Paul Custom you can wash the mud away. There also is a direcr line-out with a cannon (XLR) plug.
I give an 8 because of the footswitch and the effects loop: I did not consider the single EQ because it is no trouble for me.
Sound Quality
:9
I play a Gibson SG Standard with DiMarzio PAF Pro at the neck and Gibson Tony Iommi at the bridge. I got the amp re-tubed with Sovtek 12AX7 and JJ 6L6.
This thing is LOUD and BRUTAL. Let's take into consideration every channel:
- Clean: almost Fender-style. I plugged my friend's Tele into it and started to chicken-pick... well, it worked. Give it a 9, I don't want to give 10 because I'm not fond of clean sounds.
- Crunch: Someone says that it is too thin: well it's not particularly chunky, but it is enough for me. I can play AC/DC rhythm parts without any trouble. If you plug in a single-coil guitar, though, it IS a little thin. Rate it 7.5.
- Soft Lead: again, this is perfect for rock rhythmic parts, and even solos. Lots of gain if you want it, although it is not made for metal. Give it a 9.
- Heavy Lead: ENORMOUS. Lots of gain and almost no buzz. Perfect for all metalheads. Don't use with single-coils, too much feedback. This channel deserves a 10!
The Reverb sounds pretty good too, and the boost is very useful, also because it increases saturation and compression, due to the tubes.
Reliability
:10
It is really built like a tank. Just check tubes and it'll be fine forever.
Z5 footswitch is well-built too (I literally washed it with beer an evening, and it still works), plus it has computer-style plugs with screws, which means it cannot unplug during a gig.

This amp was made in 2003. I play mostly cover from Jazz to Funk to Blues to Metal and it nearly fits all this styles. This is one of the most versatile amps I've ever used. It has 2 channels with boost function each, a very good and rich sounding Reverb, and a effects loop (Switchable Effects loop would be nicer). The Global EQ is just fine. It has a balanced line output, which I only use to do some quick recording (just memorizing ideas on my Computer). For playing live or serious recording I absolutely recommend to mike it up (Another reason for that is the very nice sounding Celestion V30 speaker). The amp also has a solo switch (only footswitchable) which I consider VERY useful.
I only wish the Crunch channel wouldnt sound so thin, there are no breakups or fat bluesy sounds you can dial in. So I need a stomp box.
I use the amp for practice, rehearsals, gigs and recording sessions, this means always and everywhere. 50 watts of tube power are enough, because when I play big venues I mike it up.
It gets a nine because of the Crunch sound

At the moment I play mostly my Washburm Nuno Bettencourt N2 model, which in my opinion sounds very cool. My other guitars are a Framus Diabolo Custom (the old model, no ovangkol neck), a Gibson Nighthawk Custom and sometimes a PRS Custom 22.
The sound is always huge (of course depending on the guitar pickups).
The heavy lead channel is abit noisy, but in live situations it isnt that bad, and when recording I use a noise gate.
I use it with the z5 footswitch, a Morley Bad Horsy and a Boss TU2. Thats all. Fits perfectly.
The clean channel stays clean all the time, and the distorted sounds are brutal good. The only thing, again, if you want sth bluesy inbetween you have to use a stompbox, or change lead channel gain after every song.

2005 Screamer 112 Combo was purchased for it's versatility and simplicity. It is replacing a mass of equipment that I'm tired of lugging around: Marshall JCM800 and 4 x12 cab, Fender Bandmaster and 2 x 12 cab. The four "channels" on the Screamer run the full gamut from ultra clean to saturated dirt. Many have complained about the Screamer's lack of a 2nd channel EQ, but that's one reason I purchased it. I'm from the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) school of engineering. With only 9 chicken head knobs on the silver background, one can actually see the levels in a live situation! Has plenty of power for club gigs, rehearsals, etc. Sounds best through a 4 x 12.

I use both single and double coil pickup guitars (Fender/Gibson). I'm in a working cover band that plays music from the 60's-current. I'll run the Screamer through a Marshall 1960A for live gigs because it sounds better through a 4 x 12.
Clean: I was really amazed at the clean tones a "high gain" amp can generate. Kind of a scooped tone like a blackface Fender, but punchier. I'll give it a 9 and I'm pretty picky. Keep the gain below 12 o'clock and it will stay clean.
Crunch: With the gain set below 12 o'clock, it gets a nice classic rock tone. This channel really cuts through the mix live. The "boost" from clean to crunch could be just a little bit more. I like this channel with single coil pickups. I use it for that "just breaking up" tone. A little buzzy with double coils. I'll give it a 7.
Soft Lead: A thicker, more saturated tone. Gotta be careful not to set the gain too high. I generally set the gain below 12 o'clock. This amp has a lot of gain. Harder to dial in a consistent tone with this channel for some reason. Tends to sound "farty" on the low end. I'll give it a 7+.
High Lead: One of the best lead guitar tones I've heard. A nice, fat, saturated tube overdrive tone that cuts through the mix at low volume like my Marshall JCM800 cannot. Not buzzy or solid state sounding. Great harmonic overtones Very fat low end. Most guitar players are thoroughly impressed. You will never need another "boost" or "distortion" pedal again. Plenty-o-gain here. I'll give it a 9+.

This is one of the first of the Screamer 50 series. It has the brown grill, which I personally find more "classy" looking. Celestion GH12-80.
Great channel setup: clean, lead, overdrive lead. VLS for two master volume settings. Very balanced sounding Reverb. Only small disadvantage is the shared tone controls, although I have not found this limiting in getting great clean and overdrive sounds.
Effect loop. My model does not have the line out option - which I would never use anyway: if you need to feed it into a PA, mike it to take advantage of its great sound.
Very portable, which is great as I due lots of gigs. Easily fits in the trunk of my car.
Preamp tubes are 4 x 12AX7, power tubes 2 x 6L6. Rated at 50 watts, it is very loud.

I play in several bands and do gigs and sessions. This amp gives me all the sounds I need: from sparkling clean to juicy crunch to howling lead sounds. The character of this Amp makes it sound very defined in any band situation.
From Jazz cleans to Heavy rock, this baby does it all for me.
I use several guitars - PRS Custom, Fender Strat, Ernie Ball Silhoutte, Gibson Les Paul, Gibson ES335, depending on the style required. My favourite is my pre-factory PRS Custom 24, which makes this the most versatile setup I ever used.
The amp is incredibly quiet, no hums or hisses. It is also very LOUD. Upto now I have never played it with the master volume over 7, most of the times it is set at 4-5. The good thing is that you do not need to in order to get great sounds.

The power tubes were replace when I bought it and I have not found any sound degradation yet. Will probably last for at least 1-2 years.
I don't lug a backup amp around. On the other hand, I know enough people that will help me out if I ran into a problem (had it once, when my Mesa DC3 was stolen).

I have been playing for over 25 years now. If this amp would be stolen, I would certainly get another one.
Over the years I played and owned a number of amps, both good and bad. Full Marshall stacks , several Fenders (Twin Reverb is still my favourite for clean, but too big/heavy and no usable lead sound), Mesa Boogie (liked the DC3, but didn't like the Nomad), Koch Multitone (Nice, but just not "it"), H&K Duotone (broke down several times, had to get rid of it).
There are many good sounding combos around these days. For me the Engl Screamer is one of the best in its class.
