Only one EQ for 4 channels seems not enough, though it's not a problem, the presence knob helps to make the difference between clean and lead. Few knobs but in the end 5 have all I want for 4 channels - I use all with my band, clean for verses, cruch for bridges, soft or heavy lead for refrains and solos - with VLS for more volume for solos.
The Reverb is briliant. Great combo!\
And looks like an Angel ...

Sound Quality : 10
I own an Ibanez RG 2570 EVSL with DiMarzio IBZ pickups - it sound absolutely great on this amp - from sparkling cleans to heavy riffs and a hollowbody Washburn - wow! You can hear the amp crying! I use it on soft and heart breaking songs.
I play rock with blues, funk, folk, influences an this baby is perfect.
Clean - with BOSS CE-5 and the build in reverb is absolutely beautiful - very clear, and crispy, every note is defined, warm, very responsive (I played on a Fender combo before and I liked very much his clean - the SCREAMER is more sweet and powerful at the same time) I LOVE IT!
Crunch - you want blues or jazz? keep the gain at 10 and you have all you ever dreamed - with soft picking you have a well defined clean and when you're punching the strings you'll get distorted - BEAUTIFUL! With the gain above 12 you get vintage rock - very warm, a lot of sustain (even on FLOYD ROSE TREMOLOS !) And my hollowbody Washburn is in Heaven!
Lead Lo Gain - This is why I buyed this combo... Words are useless... Warm, solid, well defined (agressive if you want it) the Presence knob (again) is doing his job. My band is so excited about this channel... This is the sound we want it and I was looking for years.
Lead Hi Gain - the same as above, but more... :) You should have seen my face... When I've bring the Screamer first at the rehersal and play some metal riffs my band was stunted - Another photo missing :)

Not so noisy as expected, at very Hi Volume feedbacks - but I did't expect otherwise, but very useful feedback - my guitar loves it... i would never buy a noisereduction pedal with this baby - not needed (maybe because I don't need over 2'o clock gain - more than enough for me).

My guitars are crying now in the solos... with crystal hot tears.

Reliability : No Opinion
To soon to say. I hope it won't let me down. It's german made and they have a very good reputation about reliability.
Looks very solid.

Customer Support : 10
Before I buyed this I send an email to Engl with some question and the reply came next day, very explicit. THIS IS CUSTOMER SUPPORT.
RESPECT!

I studied Piano in music school. I play guitar since 1993 (15 years now). I use a gigboard with MORLEY wah, BOSS LS-2 line selector, BOSS CE-5 chorus, BOSS DD-20 delay(I use it through the combo's loop), BOSS TU-2 tuner.
If stolen? I would cry a river... I live in Romania and I made a bank credit for this baby(and few other stuff - like ENGL Z-5 floorboard, spare tubes, etc...) I would pay the bank for the next 3 years... so I hope it will stay with me. But in case of stolen (after crying and depression) I would try to buy it again.
I love this combo, I only heared on youtube (THANK YOU YUCCA !) and read all the reviews to ENGL SCREAMER on this site (THANK YOU HARMONY-CENTRAL !) but when it comes to me and I started to play I realise that is just as I expected AND EVEN MORE!
I don't have very much experience with tube amps (like others) but I don't have any reason to search something else. ENGL SCREAMER is everything I ever dreamed. I am so proud now with my "Angel"...

quite simple, all you need.

Sound Quality : 7
After 2 years, I quit with the screamer, dont get me wrong its a professionall Amp and the sound is also just good but to sterile and flat for me nowadays. Of course I changed the tubes and the Speaker but it dont please me, so its a keeper sure but not my main Amp anylonger its just at home now... Its a real "strong" amp, the louder it goes the more it screams, but physicaly the 1x12 size of the amp cant move much air to satisfiy tone so use extention cabs!! Its amazing for some Satriani or Dream Theater stuff ad a 4 x 12 cab and you can nail Metallica or Korn sounds. Its just a matter of taste, so maybe it will work for you Metalhead ;-)
I played many guitars over it and they all sound good and unique.
The reverb is workabel, fine.

Reliability : 10
It never let my down and I play 2 - 4 Gigs the week and practise a lot. So well made Engl.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never dealed with but I think they are in Bavaria / Germany with the distribution over Koch Amps Bochum !!

Overall Rating : 8
All in all I will keep him for some "heavy Rock attacks", or as a Backup for gigs and for toying in the studio.
If you are a Mesa Boogie fan but dont has the money, than test one of these.
I play abaout 20 years now and have / had many equipment. This amp dont realy help my making music, becouse its all in youre hands and soul, but for a cheap&good allround amp this can work. Test it and make youre choose ?? This here its just me. So.......

2 channels with boost, one eq for both channels, fx loop with level knob, other useful stuffs. I give 5 not for the single eq (i like simplicity) but for the absence of a MIDI interface for the pedalboard. The original pedalboard is too expensive, and the stereo jack switches are to be connected to 2 double common switches, which are unconfortable if you're on stage and you need one single push to both change the channel and, for instance, activate the reverb.
Furthermore I think that at least 2 different knobs for clean volume and crunch gain had to be appreciated.

Sound Quality : 8
I would like to give to the reader my actual impression about this amp's tone, without being influenced by the fact that I'm the owner of this stuff.

Well... Since the moment I tried this amp, I thought all discussion and dissertations about how fine or terrible are clean channel on different amps were only matter for cheaters... Since that moment, I thought all clean channels were very similar, from low budget to medium-high budget amps (never tried a Bogner:)).

I was wrong. Once I tried the Screamer, I found a very different clean sound. Impressive punch, still producing clear notes even at high volume levels. The sound is very bright, defined, and controlled. I never thought to be able to appreciate those aspects (I played for many years but I never seriously dealed with tone construction).

Crunch channel is affected by the clean volume (which works as gain for the crunch). This is a costrain of the simplicity of this amp.

Lead and Boosted channels are very fine. The sound is compressed, punched, and "clear", i.e. it is not lost when all the band is playing.

I give 8. I like it very much but I'm sure there are much better pieces of equipment (e.g. Bogner) which are able to offer even better tone. Anyway, I think that if in the future I will need a more powerful amp, my first choice will be an ENGL head.

Reliability : No Opinion
No problem so far

Customer Support : No Opinion
Hope this will remain a mystery.

Overall Rating : 8
Since one year something has changed in my playing style. In the past I was looking for great versatility, I had racks and pedals, I had the H&K Switchblade with a lot of effects, 128 memories and an absolute control of channels. Now I sold them all, I'm playing only with my guitar, a Carl Martin compressor, a tuner, and the amp. Period. That's very satisfactory.

This is why I give 8. Pure tones are what I'm looking for so far, and this amp is perfect for me - less knobs and more tone -. I don't actually care about the few features which it offers, even if the vote had could be raised to 9 with a couple of knobs more :)

German made, 4 channels, awesome reverb.
Valve all the way.

Sound Quality : 10
Ok. I did extensive research before I bought this amp. I read practically every online review that had been written and I listened non-stop to the youtube videos showing what sounds it could make (Well worth a listen by the way, Juca you kick ass). No matter what speaker set-up you have for your pc, NOTHING can replicate the sheer amount of awesome which comes out of this amp as soon as you hit a chord. The clean is absolutely insane. "Ringing like a bell" does not do it justice - its rediculously responsive, transparant and warm at the same time. It blows the absolute socks off any clean i've ever come across. Boosting the gain is slightly dodgy though, and this is my only real complaint with the machine. As long as you have your clean gain setting pretty high, just before it starts to break up, the extra gain boost gives you a very usable ACDC raw rock tone. As long as you pick hard then its fine. If your gain isn't already quite high though you do tend to get a pretty weedy version of the clean channel with a little bit more breakup. The overdrive channels melt my face repeatedly. The standard drive channel is everything you could possibly want for rhythm - palm muting is exceptionally tight and precussive. Boost the gain and things get sometimes uncomfortably gainy. There is definately enough gain here for anyone playing anything. High notes sing exceptionally clearly and last forever. The biggest difference between this amp and others within a comparable price range is that notes never get lost in the fuzz. You can let a low E ring with insane gain, and just noodle your way up the neck and you can hear every note perfectly. This amp is just so far above all the competition.

Reliability : 10
The outside of the amp is covered in a kinda slightly squidgy material which is pretty nice to stroke if your into that kind of thing. But it does tear if your not careful and can end up looking a bit pants. Just take care and you'll be fine. The grill is made of metal, its small, and its bloody heavy - its built like a miniture bomb shelter. If another war happens, just get inside it.

Customer Support : No Opinion
warrenty lasts a year i think which is fairly standard. Haven't owned it for long but nothing's happened to it yet. Fingers crossed it'll stay that way.

Overall Rating : 9
Been playing for aboot 7 years now and i've got a Gibby Les Paul Deluxe which i've pimped out with some Seymour Duncan Mini-Buckers (S-2 bridge and S-1 neck).
My only major beef with this piece of kit is the footswitch. Why does it have to be sold seperately, and why is it so rediculously bloody expensive! ??120 for something im going to stamp on repeatedly is just stupid. I'll probably end up buying it at some point but im kind've broke since i bought this :(

Since about half a year now, I own an Engl Screamer 50 112 Combo tube amp.
I think for an amp in his price range (??? 1000 Euro), the Screamer is extremely versatile, especially considering that it only has one EQ (separate controls for Bass, Mid, Treble) for the clean and the gain channels.
All in all it features four channels: Clean low gain, Clean high gain, Lead low gain and Lead High Gain. Other features: An effects channel (the rate of the wet signal can be adapted!), Master Volume A/B, Brilliance-Switch for the Clean Channel and a Lead Presence control.
I bought it together with a special Engl footswitch (M5 I think), with which you can separately access all four channels, activate the built-in reverb and switch between Master volume A and B.

Sound Quality : 10
I'm mostly using the amp with my Ibanez Jem550 as well as an old Strat and a Gibson LP Standard. I mostly use it for all kinds of standard rock stuff, but I'm sure you could also play all kinds of music with it. I'm not sure if it's brutal enough for metal and hardcore either.
I bought it together with a Engl 4x12 cabinet to give it more balls and have used it only in this combination, but it also sounds great without the cabinet. I don't use much effects with it, I have a compressor, a delay, and a CryBaby, that's it, the rest of the various sounds I make just with the volume cntrol of the guitar and the Engl footswitch I bought for the amp.
As for the stuff I'm playing with it, I love its sound, I think it's the perfect combination between a great clean channel and a great lead channel. The clean tone is nice and shiny and stays like that even at high volumes (at least that's how I want it, if you twist the controls a bit, you can also get a lead tone already with the clean channel), the lead channel has enough balls and you can easily "make it sing" but even when playing chords in the Lead high gain channel the individual notes can be heard, the sounds stays very transparent. And with the Master A/B-switch you always have the option to kick it up one more gear.
What I don't really like is the Clean high gain channel. It comes in handy sometimes, but for a crunchy tone I'd rather use the Lead low gain channel and turn down the volume on the guitar.
The noise when using the lead channel is ok, I think. Not exactly silent, but not too bad, either.

Reliability : 10
Only used it for one gig and practice so far, no problems whatsoever.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Haven't needed it so far.

Overall Rating : No Opinion
To make it short: I love this baby. It's easy to use, but still versatile, it's loud enough for any venue (especially with the 4x12 cabinet I use with it) and the sound gives me goose bumps every time I turn it on. It's my first tube amp and I think it spoiled me for all other amps I might use in the future.

50 watt tube amp, loud as hell, haven't even got the master volume up over 1.5 yet. 2 channels (clean and distortion), with 2 different voicings on both channels. On the clean, the sound gets a little dirty, 70's style distortion. And on the distortion channel, the gain increases radically. The two channels share the same eq-sections, which is the downside of this amp, I must say. Nothing that really bothers me, but could have been separated, only for simplicitys sake.
Oh, and the clean channel has a bright switch too, which is good.
One thing I must say about the eq-section is that it is very responsive.
On other words, the sound drastically changes when you control the eq, which is really good, and that's a thing I missed with other amps.

Sound Quality : 9
This is exactly what I have been looking for. An extremely versatile tube amp. This thing can produce those deep, thick jazz leads, as well as chewing metal rhytms and soaring fusion leads. Everything you can imagine, to a very resonable price. I have owned so many amplifiers this summer, in the search for the ultimate. To name those: Fender Cyber-Champ, Peavey Windsor, Peavey Classic 30, Hughes & Kettner and Mesa Boogie Express 5:50. The ENGL Screamer 50 blows those away.
I use this amp with an Ibanez SZ 2020 FM, which is a really heavy guitar with mahogany body. I get a really nice tone with it. I am sure it will sound very nice with Telecasters and such.

Reliability : 9
I depend on it, because if this reason. When I had bought this amp, I returned home and was carrying it inside, when I dropped it on a stone stairway. It sounded awful, and I got scared as hell, thinking that the tubes had broke. But no, the thing kept on working. So this is like a god damn tank

Customer Support : No Opinion
Have never been in touch with them, so I can't tell.

Overall Rating : 9
I have been playing 4 and a half year, and I must say that I have found MY tone. As I said, I have owned a lot of amps, and this thing is good.
If it was stolen, I'd cry my eyes out. You get addicted to the ENGL Screamer.
Go buy it, I don't think you will be disappointed.

Not sure when mine was made, bought it 4 weeks ago new. 4 channels with a shared eq. This is the most versitile amp I have ever owned, i play jazz, blues up to hard rock and a bit of Metal. For a small combo, this is one loud amp(50 watt valve after all). A seperate eq for the clean channel would be nice, though you have to be pretty radical with the tone controls to get anything approaching a bad sound on any of the channels. One thing though, you have to pay extra for the superb footswitch, $400 Australian.

Sound Quality : 10
The clean on this amp is beautiful. I have a Twin and side by side they are similar, I prefer the clean on the Engl, it has a beautiful transparency to it and the warmth of the valves is all ways there. The second channel (boosted clean) can give you a great ACDC crunch or a nice bluesy lead. Playing in a 7o's rock band, i find i use channel 3 the most, sounds a lot like a JCM 800 i used to own. Channel 4 (boosted 3) is the high gain channel, i find this is great for solos and the modern high gain stuff. I think for me the most astonishing thing about this amp is that you can play it quietly and still get a great over drive sound, right down to virtually nothing! Couldn't do that with my 50 watt JCM 800 combo, nor my Rivera R100 combo, or the Pro tube Twin, they all had to be cranked. How do they do it? Its like it has a built in attenuater. I walked into the music shop determined to buy a good solid state half stack because of this reason. The salesman, after letting me play through their good range of solid state amps steered me in the direction of this little Engl, no contest! The second brilliant thing about this amp is that you can get a clean to rivel a Twin and change channels and have a choice of three great overdrives, what else in this price range can do that? My Rivera could but only after making my ears bleed and at a much higher price.

Reliability : No Opinion
The build quality reminds me of the Rivera, very well put together and should last for years, makes the Fender look shoddy. Apart from that, only had it 4 weeks.

Customer Support : No Opinion

Overall Rating : 10
Been playing for about 10 years. I play a Mex strat with Lace sensors in it and it sounds superb. If it was stolen I would cry, track the bastard down and throw my Twin at him, and get another Screamer 50. Buy one, you won't be disapointed.

You already know the features from the other reviews. And Im not here to fill inn any info on the amps features. Its a simple amp with all the esentials to tune in a good sound for most tastes.

I see this amp as an simple, no bullshit and straight forward amp,
just turn it on and pley. If you try this amp, just turn it on, set the bass, middle and treble to 12o' clock and you will most definately get a good sound.

Sound Quality : 10
The amp has only one eq, which isnt necessary a drawback. It needs more fiddeling to get a good sound from both clean and dist channels.
Since there is only one eq there is 4 drive modes rather than 4 channels.

The clean is just awsome, I love this channel. Its just so open and bright, and if you use your guitars tone pot-meter you can get a wide variety of sounds very easy.

I dont tend to use the pushed clean mode, but I use the HiGain a lot.
And both of them are really awsome, it kicks your ass and slaps you in the face every time. When turned up loud (and the amp can get loud as hell for its size) its just raw power. I felt like I had been touched by something evil the first time I turned this baby up.

I recon with the 4 different drive modes the amp can suit a wide array of different styles and sound. I personally have used this amp for metal, rock, blues and jazz, and it worked beautifully for every one of thoes styles.

This amp just has to experienced, it will blow you away. And if you try this amp in a store, please ask them to play it loud becaus thats the way its supposed to be played.

Reliability : 10
Iv had this amp for 2 years now. The first year I used it daily and I would transport it to and from bandpractice once a week, and sometimes moore. And it has never dissappointed, just plug in, turn on and theres that awsome sound.

The second year I owned it I was in military service, so it just stood at home collecting dust. And me and my Screamer is at our 3rd year, and its still going strong. Iv changed the power-tubes to a couple of Mesa & Boogie because the tubes that comes stock with the amp might be old and brittle. So after the change the amp got a little more powerful sound. I havnt changed the pre-amp tubes yet.

This amp is build like a German Tiger tank, you can drag around and it will just keep on giving you those great tones.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I havnt been in contact with Engl yet, but after what Iv heard from other people they are true Germans. The will help you with your problems and fix your amp at a moments notice.

Overall Rating : 10
Iv been playing guitar for 6 years now. And I bought this amp a couple of years ago, just after I had bought a Gibson Explorer. And those two together is my dream team.

If this amp were lost or stolen I would by a new one as soon as I could afford it. And if Im going to buy a new amp in the feature it will only be a bigger and louder Engl, like the Powerball.

I love that this amp is a simple and straith forward amp, it just works and its sound is just utterly pleasing. The only minor issue with this amp is that it is heavy as hell, about 30kg. But that isnt and issue. I love this amp so much that I just have to get stronger so that I can carry it around ;P

If you have questions about this amp, please mail me.

I personally don???t know what year my amp was made, and to be honest I don???t care!
But I do care whether this amp is versatile enough for me and the music styles I play. AND IT IS!!! I play from pop-funk-disco to melodic-poser rock and SCREAMER rocks in every style!! It has four switchable channels and an extra feature called V.L.S. which distincts this amp further compared with other combos. This VLS feature simply raises the amount of volume whenever you want and on whatever level you want!!! Your solos can finally be heard!! To be able to fully control the channels and reverb I use the Z-5 Custom Footswitch by Horst Langer (Great construction too) I use SCREAMER in studio and live applications and never let me down. It???s far more than 50 watts in your ear and your bandmates. And it???s build like a tank as many keep saying.

Sound Quality : 10
This amp can make a wide variety of sounds. From sparkling clean to vintage ones, from massive crunchy sound to Super Lead situations (if u know what I mean!). I use it both with Fender Stratocaster 60th Anniversary (also see my review on this) and Gibson Les Studio Plus. The results are awesome! (Keep in mind different EQ settings-TOTAL DIFFERENT GUITARS). SCREAMER definitely suits the music style I mentioned above, and it has a regular noise at VERY high levels as all amps on that level.

Reliability : 10
Until now Screamer never let me down, and I would use it without a backup. I depend on it 100% and as I said before it???s built like a DEUTCHE TANK!

Customer Support : 10
I???ve never dealt with ENGL. My local dealer gave me 2 years full warranty so I???m happy for it. Also the authorized service is 10 minutes far from my home!

Overall Rating : 10
I???ve been playing for about 15 years and I have been the owner of several tube amps including Marshall DSL, TSL, Randall e.t.c. SCREAMER is by far the most versatile and high featured amp I???ve owned. The sound is just as pros keep saying HIGH END!
Retains its value, and is by far the best amp in his category or combos valuing two times more. Screamer outputs exactly whatever you input. So if you are not able to control your Green ones, you???d better try sth else. It???s a pretty Brit sound amp I could say with a character of high gain American ones. All these made and assembled in Germany by a group of people calling themselves ENGL Team. Somewhat like a custom one or not?
If it were stolen I would buy it again as Screamer head! I wish it was patched with midi options!!

This is a 50 watt,4 channel(with Footswitch)all tube amp. 6L6 Power tubes, 12 AX7 Pre amp tubes. Ch1-Clean, Ch2-Blues-AC/DC Crunch, Ch3-Heavy Crunch Overdrive, Ch4-Super Crunch Overdrive,Creamy Saturation. Footswitchable Spring Reverb. Footswitchable Adjustable Boost for each channel. Adjustabel Effects Loop. This amp can handle any gig from club to stage.

Sound Quality : 9
Clean channel is pretty good. Very Fender like but could use a little more headroom. Channel two can get you the AC/DC crunch easily with a Les Paul or awesome Stevie Ray tones with a Strat. Channel three can grind for classic rock or heavy blues. I have used this channel alot for rhythm and solos. Channel four is just all out sustain city for lead work. Overall I would give this amp a 9 for sound quality.

Reliability : No Opinion
I've had this amp for almost a year with no problems.

Never had to call them

The only flaw of this amp is the Clean channel headroom...it just distorts a little too soon for my tastes. I sold my Marshall JCM900, JCM200 DSL, and a Mesa Single Rectifier Head after I got this amp. It can do it all and then some. I highly recommend you try one out(if you can find one in a store)They are definately worth a listen.

Im sure you allready know all features.
For me its simple and easy, but not perfect.
A second master level and reverb poti woul make this more pleased.

Sound Quality : 8
First, the Vintage 30 Speaker makes this Amp sounds bad,
At home it was just "ok" for practising at very low volumen, but something was missing, mhh. At my Band the Screamer sounds like a
broken box of wood, very muffy, this is a result of an open back and the V30, I test it with my 4x12 stack without the V30 and known what was wrong, so I changed the V30 against a Celestion Heritage and yeah, much more organic this way, now I play it with a 2x12 Marshall box modded with Heritages at 8 Ohm.
The Amp sound is cool for any style, the tubes make it sounds "real" but I also known 1x12 Amps that are much more expensiv and have a much more versatile or perfect sound. But I can live well with the screamer, because the louder the amp is - the better the sound comes. So I use it for small club gigs, or a/b it with my Mesa Lonestar. The Screamers basic sound is very "modern" and middy so perfect for Hard Rock, Metal and high speed licks. The only channel I dont like is the "chrunch", its to steril and bright and I prefer to use a overdrive as a better alternative. The Reverb unit is Ok at low and littel settings but when you turn it over 12 o clock position it washes the sound and gets a metalic steril undertone.
My main Guitar is a modded Fender Us Stratocaster and a Jackson SL2H Mahagoni ( Im a Strat type ) but I also have a 68 Gibson Paula and a Esp Horizon NT.
With the Screamer I use a Maxon delay ( perfect in the effect loop of the screamer ) and Od 9, TC chorus, a Simple Morley Wahwah, and a Boss tuner. But with good cables ( often underrated ).

My main Tunning is;
clean vol ; 11 oclock.
gain at 11
Bass at 1
midds at 1
highs at 10
pres. 10
Reverb at 10
Master volumen near 3 oclock.

Reliability : 10
Looks and feels like a solid, heavy Amp. The Tubes are at a good place at a natural wind circulation, so no burner here. There is nothing bad on it and this is the greatest at this Engl Amps, there build to get Rocked Hard.
After one week a Tube was blown away but the dealer give me a new one for free. Shit happens ;-)

I would call it a good Mesa Boogie meets Rivera Clone with a own outstanding charakter.
its just a matter of personal taste and for the price and build quality its a very good deal.
but trust me _ change the muddy V30 speaker and you will feel better.
And if you have a extension cab...use it and turn the volumen up.

all the stuff has been mentioned. Great reverb. Treble Presence works very well and makes the amp extremely diverse in the Eq. Excellent effects loop and numerous amounts of speaker combinations. VLS is the exact same as dual master volumes except it doesn't have a control knob on it.

only reasons why i give this amp an 9 is because of the shared eq and gain and the fact that it doesn't come with a footswitch (i would pay the extra money if the Z-5 footswitch was included). However i justify this as this amp is very simple and i believe adding an eq in would damage the sound, therefore i give it a 9.

Sound Quality : 9
Firstly this thing is loud! I practice below 1 and reherse with a band on 1/4 volume. It just gets way better as it gets louder. I play a fender american deluxe fat strat.

I'll go channel by channel:

Clean - awesome channel. Better than any other amp in it's price range and just about up there with amps around double the price. The bright switch is also great and i keep it on all the time. It is just amazing, and if you add reverb it gets better. i'm giving it a 10 for the price you pay for it.

Clean Hi Gain - a very odd channel yet fairly versitile. if you have the gain down and the neck pickup it practically plays clean without the warmth. However it can break up more than anyone needs it to. It is a bit thin but plays AC/DC stuff fairly well. However i wish it was more like a marshall's crunch and had the same kind of characteristics as you can't really play clean and break up on it. I'm giving it a 6.5 because i don't really care and will rarely use it, however i do say that it's only there for people who might enjoy maybe a minute or two of breakup and not play that sound forever.

Soft Lead - Great! Overlaps a bit with the clean hi gain, but not much. It plays classic rock great and sounds like the lead channel of a marshall. It is a little thin, but if you turn the bass up or the volume it is fixed. You can get a million sounds out of this channel and they are all great. i will give it a 9.5

Heavy Lead - believe me this has more than enough gain for a combo. this channel screams, while still staying virtually noiseless. It gives me the best neck pickup distortion i've heard. The eq also allows this channel to be very versitile in terms of treble. I'm giving it a 10 as if i put a quad on it, it gives an awesome distortion and that it is just great for the money you pay.

Reliability : 10
automatically giving it a 10. It is build like an absolute tank and besides the open back it is completely invulnerable.

metal grill at the front, metal logo, strong cabinet and more screws in the amp than any other.

Customer Support : No Opinion
nothing as of yet. i believe 1 year warranty.

Overall Rating : 10
It says "fantastic value" on 10 for this category and i've got to give it that. It is the best you can get for the price. The Engl Screamer Combo is firstly great value ($100 more for a combo than the head) and when i get the money, i will buy a quad for it and it will sound better than almost all amps. I like this amp better than the Savage 120. It gives you 3 great sounds 1 average, apart to the many average sounds higher end amps have. Don't buy the amp with the most switches, buy the rawest amp with the best sounds.

this amp would also make a great amp to throw you effects on - great clean and excellent speaker and poweramp section.

Just want to ad that this is realy a great combo, its sound modern and not vintage like so it can sound like a Marshall Jcm 800 and also like a recto. but not like a twin or ac 30 !!
And what do you imagine about a open back 50 Watt V 30 Combo ??
its sounds good in youre bedroom but with a Band you MUST have a closed 2x12 or 4x12 !! Or you have a fish alu platet fishtank crap sound !
It has enough power to blow 2 4x12 !! Look the Amp from Tom Morello, 50 watt top in a 4x12 and did he sound like shit ??!! A 9 because its well worth the money but ther are better combos out ther that realy are a 10 !! You "I better writte how great the shit I have buy is, before I call myself stupid" people here at HC. I bought this amp new from a chain of music stores in the UK for ??649 in Nov 2004. That particular chain has since be bought out by another, changed name and no longer sell the Engl range (WHY?)
The features have been covered many times over, so won't repeat them.

Sound Quality : 9
This amp is extremely versatile. The clean sounds are among the best I have heard in 25 years of playing. I work as a professional live sound engineer and has been "borrowed" by several "name" players, one of which went out and bought one purely for the clean channel ("sounds like a twin but fits in the boot of my car"). Crunch does AC/DC or Georgia Satellites rhythm parts fine, soft lead does fine for me with my humbucker equipped PRS McCarty for the dirty stuff.
The last channel I rarely use, but I did make a Jap Telecaster sing with it like it never had before! I think the reverb is pretty naff. The tail is too long and is unusuable above 2. The bright switch is just that. Using the combo's own speaker, the amp lacks a little warmth, without cranking the bass to to 9, and the bright switch just makes matters worse.

Reliability : 8
Pumping that much bass thru a poor single vintage 30 in an open cab is not recommended. I am about to replace the driver for the second time in 2 years. I am not a "bottom heavy" metal player. The amp gets quite heavy usage, up to 5 times a week, covering all kinds on styles, with allsorts of guitars. I have replaced the valve as precaution, but the originals were working fine and I still have them as back up.

Not dealt with. Unknown

I went in to the shop to buy a Yamaha SG2000s, I walked out with the guitar, and went back a week later and bought the amp I had tried it through! I had heard of Engl, but that was it. Would i recommend one? Yes, but with an extension cab. If it was stolen, I would probably buy the head version with a 4x12....
Anyone looking for an all round amp must try one of these. Forget modelling stuff. This will do the job and sound far better.

Its a new model from 2005/ 06
For my its versatile enough. I play styles from Hendrix, Guns N Roses to Metallica and sometimes a bit of jazz, classic, blues fusion.
It has 4 channels, a good effect loop, one reverb unit, inputs for one or two 8 / 16 ohm Loudspeakers. A Celestion V 30.
A simple standart Eq. wich is ok.
I use it at home, gigs, with my Band, Studio etc.
The 50 Watts tube power are enough for any venue.
I play it with a 2x12 Engl cab.
No, nothing to add, the simpler a amp is and the more tubes it has, the better it is ( for me ).

Sound Quality : 9
Its is a midrangy, very bassfull amp.
Clean is great, I can compare it with the Twin amp from a friend and its nearly the same sound quality, but the screamer has a different voice. The bright switch mellows the sound wich is very cool for clean sounds.
Chrunch "feels" a bit louder than the clean and some more highs are coming, the louder you set the clean volumen, the more gain is in the chrunch.
Lead is great for " classic " Rock sounds, great overdrive. But its better without the bright switch. ( more eggs ).
The heavy lead is a Hardrock Metal sound that is very cool. Lead lines can sound very full, screaming and with rich attack, wow !! But for chord playing I set the gain under 12 oclock.
The amp has a direct and un-compromissed voice, its spells exactlly what you are playing, no colouring or influence. So for "bad" players that can go bad, but for players with technik, that amp gives a 100% Pro. music instrument, I love it more and more I play it.
My set up; clean 10:30 o clock, bass, mids, highs, presence and lead volumen at 12 o clock, the reverb at 11 oclock, the main volumen like i need it. ( From Bedroom to Stadion its all possible ).
I play a Gibson Paula and a Esp Horizon II.
A Delay in the effect loop, wich sounds perfect and a wah direct in the input, great !! Also I only use it with the Z4 footswitch wich is all I need. ( The Z5 is to large ).

Reliability : 9
Looks like metal, feels like metal, weights like metal, quality.
The tubes are 1 year old and still Ok.

I have a Marshall Plexi and a Rivera Chubster. Many Stomb Boxes and some different cabs. My main Guitars are Gibson and Esp but I also have a Fender 70 Strat and a Epiphone Casino.
I love the simple and direct voice and the handling of ( any ) 1x12 combo. For what I have buy it, it works ( sometimes wonders ). So I dont want add there something.

The clean is just great,? not so much compression like my 2001 Twin Amp,
And smoother than my Roccaforte Plexi Top. Its nearer to a Mesa Lonestar.
It has deepth but clarity and a beautyfull Bell chime Sound.
Its very hard to explain a sound, but if you need a fantastic allround Combo, check this one.
For the price, unbeatable. The clean can go loud enough to play with a double bass drummer ;-)
And when you play in a little club without a PA ? You must make something wrong in your
Buisenes work.
The chrunch is Ok but I play a Fulltone 69 Fuzz or a moded Tubescreamer in the clean
Channel for that. Oh and play with the bright switch on !! If you loose bottom
Put a little bit more bass in it.
The lead has tones of gaaiiiinnnn, I never put this over the 12 o clock.
( When I need some Pantera sounds I dail out the mids. )
You have 4 channels with one EQ, so mind this is shit, ? I play only the clean and the lead
Channel, in a allround setting. Because it sucks when you must turn the knops at a life gig every
Second song !! Oh and the reverb beats the Twin and my old Holy Grail. Its always on, at 10 O o`clock
Oh and the lead one is also loud enough.

My live gear ; Gibson Paula, Fender Strat. T Rex delay, moded Tubescreamer, Fulltone
69 Fuzz, Cry Baby 353Q,
Korg Dt 10 Tuner. And 2 channel switch?in the screamer 50...
Sometimes with a mesa 1 x 12 cab. To have the Speaker nearer to my ears
Because chairs sucks and also you have more air moving.

TC Electronics G major. Line 6 Pro Pod.

Features : 8
1x12 50w tube combo, made in 2003 (I bought it used). Cone is a Celestion Vintage 30, which kicks ass.
4 channels: Clean, Crunch, Soft Lead, Heavy Lead. ENGL prefers to call them 2 channels (Clean/Lead) with two "modes" each (Low Gain/High Gain). So you have only two switches in the front of the amp. It includes the VLS function, which is kind of booster (in fact, you have a pot, located in the back of the amp, which dials in the volume gap between the normal sound and the boosted sound).
All of this is switchable via footswitch, but... the damn footswitch is NOT INCLUDED. Also, the reverb and the boost can ONLY be kicked in via footswitch, i.e. no switches on amp. There are two ways to behave:
- buy the ENGL Z5 Footswitch (six switches, 180? here in Italy)
- get a normal, double-switch pedal, with a stereo jack plug, and switch channels. Another one can be used to kick in boost and reverb. Using single switches is not recommended because one function can be switched while the other IS ALWAYS ON. So if you use a single switch for the channels you don't have Clean and Lead but Crunch and Heavy Lead. No good.
I preferred to buy the Z5 because with normal switches I would have to push two buttons to switch between Clean and Heavy Lead, which is a typical "Metallica" situation.
Another point is the EQ: this thing has only got a single EQ, plus a Presence control for the Lead channels. Personally I LOVE this, because there are only a handful of knobs on the front of the amp, and if I want to crank something while playing, I can do it without any trouble. "Chicken-head" knobs make easy to SEE regulations... if you got a Mesa Recto, you can forget that. BUT, if you REALLY want separate EQ for each channel, this could be a big trouble.
Has a parallel effects loop, which I prefer to be switchable: not a big problem, though.
Almost forgot it has a "bright" switch, so if you got a Les Paul Custom you can wash the mud away. There also is a direcr line-out with a cannon (XLR) plug.

I give an 8 because of the footswitch and the effects loop: I did not consider the single EQ because it is no trouble for me.

Sound Quality : 9
I play a Gibson SG Standard with DiMarzio PAF Pro at the neck and Gibson Tony Iommi at the bridge. I got the amp re-tubed with Sovtek 12AX7 and JJ 6L6.
This thing is LOUD and BRUTAL. Let's take into consideration every channel:
- Clean: almost Fender-style. I plugged my friend's Tele into it and started to chicken-pick... well, it worked. Give it a 9, I don't want to give 10 because I'm not fond of clean sounds.
- Crunch: Someone says that it is too thin: well it's not particularly chunky, but it is enough for me. I can play AC/DC rhythm parts without any trouble. If you plug in a single-coil guitar, though, it IS a little thin. Rate it 7.5.
- Soft Lead: again, this is perfect for rock rhythmic parts, and even solos. Lots of gain if you want it, although it is not made for metal. Give it a 9.
- Heavy Lead: ENORMOUS. Lots of gain and almost no buzz. Perfect for all metalheads. Don't use with single-coils, too much feedback. This channel deserves a 10!

The Reverb sounds pretty good too, and the boost is very useful, also because it increases saturation and compression, due to the tubes.

Reliability : 10
It is really built like a tank. Just check tubes and it'll be fine forever.
Z5 footswitch is well-built too (I literally washed it with beer an evening, and it still works), plus it has computer-style plugs with screws, which means it cannot unplug during a gig.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Not dealt with ENGL yet. The Italian dealer, MOGAR, is a @#$%!^& !@#$%^&, but this does not matter.

Overall Rating : 9
Great if you play Rock or Metal. It's the best tube combo I have tried this far: ENGL heads IMHO kick rectifiers' asses, too. If 50W are enough for you (I bet they are) then you should seriously give it a try.

This amp was made in 2003. I play mostly cover from Jazz to Funk to Blues to Metal and it nearly fits all this styles. This is one of the most versatile amps I've ever used. It has 2 channels with boost function each, a very good and rich sounding Reverb, and a effects loop (Switchable Effects loop would be nicer). The Global EQ is just fine. It has a balanced line output, which I only use to do some quick recording (just memorizing ideas on my Computer). For playing live or serious recording I absolutely recommend to mike it up (Another reason for that is the very nice sounding Celestion V30 speaker). The amp also has a solo switch (only footswitchable) which I consider VERY useful.
I only wish the Crunch channel wouldnt sound so thin, there are no breakups or fat bluesy sounds you can dial in. So I need a stomp box.
I use the amp for practice, rehearsals, gigs and recording sessions, this means always and everywhere. 50 watts of tube power are enough, because when I play big venues I mike it up.
It gets a nine because of the Crunch sound

Sound Quality : 9
At the moment I play mostly my Washburm Nuno Bettencourt N2 model, which in my opinion sounds very cool. My other guitars are a Framus Diabolo Custom (the old model, no ovangkol neck), a Gibson Nighthawk Custom and sometimes a PRS Custom 22.
The sound is always huge (of course depending on the guitar pickups).
The heavy lead channel is abit noisy, but in live situations it isnt that bad, and when recording I use a noise gate.
I use it with the z5 footswitch, a Morley Bad Horsy and a Boss TU2. Thats all. Fits perfectly.
The clean channel stays clean all the time, and the distorted sounds are brutal good. The only thing, again, if you want sth bluesy inbetween you have to use a stompbox, or change lead channel gain after every song.

Reliability : 10
I'm seriously gigging for two years with it, never had a problem. I always carry it in my custom made road rack.
But I also have an Engl Tube Toner with me as a backup, you never know...
The amp works fine and has been a lot on the road and is often played 5 hours a day.
No complaints

2005 Screamer 112 Combo was purchased for it's versatility and simplicity. It is replacing a mass of equipment that I'm tired of lugging around: Marshall JCM800 and 4 x12 cab, Fender Bandmaster and 2 x 12 cab. The four "channels" on the Screamer run the full gamut from ultra clean to saturated dirt. Many have complained about the Screamer's lack of a 2nd channel EQ, but that's one reason I purchased it. I'm from the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) school of engineering. With only 9 chicken head knobs on the silver background, one can actually see the levels in a live situation! Has plenty of power for club gigs, rehearsals, etc. Sounds best through a 4 x 12.

Sound Quality : 9
I use both single and double coil pickup guitars (Fender/Gibson). I'm in a working cover band that plays music from the 60's-current. I'll run the Screamer through a Marshall 1960A for live gigs because it sounds better through a 4 x 12.

Clean: I was really amazed at the clean tones a "high gain" amp can generate. Kind of a scooped tone like a blackface Fender, but punchier. I'll give it a 9 and I'm pretty picky. Keep the gain below 12 o'clock and it will stay clean.

Crunch: With the gain set below 12 o'clock, it gets a nice classic rock tone. This channel really cuts through the mix live. The "boost" from clean to crunch could be just a little bit more. I like this channel with single coil pickups. I use it for that "just breaking up" tone. A little buzzy with double coils. I'll give it a 7.

Soft Lead: A thicker, more saturated tone. Gotta be careful not to set the gain too high. I generally set the gain below 12 o'clock. This amp has a lot of gain. Harder to dial in a consistent tone with this channel for some reason. Tends to sound "farty" on the low end. I'll give it a 7+.

High Lead: One of the best lead guitar tones I've heard. A nice, fat, saturated tube overdrive tone that cuts through the mix at low volume like my Marshall JCM800 cannot. Not buzzy or solid state sounding. Great harmonic overtones Very fat low end. Most guitar players are thoroughly impressed. You will never need another "boost" or "distortion" pedal again. Plenty-o-gain here. I'll give it a 9+.

Reliability : No Opinion
I gig with it every weekend. I have a backup rig (just in case). Never had any problems and it seems durable.

Been playing 30+ years. I've owned and tried them all including the boutique amps. I wanted a simple, versatile combo that I could use for practice, band rehearsal, and live gigging. I played combos by Rivera, Bogner, Marshall, Fender, Dr. Z, Matchless, Mesa, Bad Cat, etc. I liked the Screamer's versatile tone, simple layout, 4-channels, reliability, VLS (lead boost), L-5 footpedal, multi-speaker outputs, and price. Great value when compared to the amps I previously mentioned.

This is one of the first of the Screamer 50 series. It has the brown grill, which I personally find more "classy" looking. Celestion GH12-80.
Great channel setup: clean, lead, overdrive lead. VLS for two master volume settings. Very balanced sounding Reverb. Only small disadvantage is the shared tone controls, although I have not found this limiting in getting great clean and overdrive sounds.
Effect loop. My model does not have the line out option - which I would never use anyway: if you need to feed it into a PA, mike it to take advantage of its great sound.
Very portable, which is great as I due lots of gigs. Easily fits in the trunk of my car.
Preamp tubes are 4 x 12AX7, power tubes 2 x 6L6. Rated at 50 watts, it is very loud.

Sound Quality : 9
I play in several bands and do gigs and sessions. This amp gives me all the sounds I need: from sparkling clean to juicy crunch to howling lead sounds. The character of this Amp makes it sound very defined in any band situation.
From Jazz cleans to Heavy rock, this baby does it all for me.
I use several guitars - PRS Custom, Fender Strat, Ernie Ball Silhoutte, Gibson Les Paul, Gibson ES335, depending on the style required. My favourite is my pre-factory PRS Custom 24, which makes this the most versatile setup I ever used.
The amp is incredibly quiet, no hums or hisses. It is also very LOUD. Upto now I have never played it with the master volume over 7, most of the times it is set at 4-5. The good thing is that you do not need to in order to get great sounds.

Reliability : 10
I have had this amp for about 10 months now and it never let me down. It is build as a tank - German quality - and I take well care of my equipment.
The power tubes were replace when I bought it and I have not found any sound degradation yet. Will probably last for at least 1-2 years.
I don't lug a backup amp around. On the other hand, I know enough people that will help me out if I ran into a problem (had it once, when my Mesa DC3 was stolen).

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never had to deal with them.

Overall Rating : 9
I have been playing for over 25 years now. If this amp would be stolen, I would certainly get another one.
Over the years I played and owned a number of amps, both good and bad. Full Marshall stacks , several Fenders (Twin Reverb is still my favourite for clean, but too big/heavy and no usable lead sound), Mesa Boogie (liked the DC3, but didn't like the Nomad), Koch Multitone (Nice, but just not "it"), H&K Duotone (broke down several times, had to get rid of it).
There are many good sounding combos around these days. For me the Engl Screamer is one of the best in its class.

At the moment im running an Ibanez Artcore ( Semi Hollow, Humbuckers ) through a Boss TU-2. The Clean Channel is surprisingly good, with a very warm tube tone. The Crunch and Lead channels are where this amp really shines. A tight bottom end, Quite adequate Mids and Clear Shimmering highs really give this amp its unique ENGL tone. Its produces very little unwanted noise even at maximum volumes.

I bought that amp in 2004 at Musik Schmidt in Frankfurt Germany.
All the faetures where mentioned before - so let me just repeat, that this amp definitly got everything it takes.
The Screamer 50 Combo should always be bought together with the Z5 pedal.
The pedal does not only offer the easy switch between clean, crunch, light and heavy distortion and reverb, but it also offers two differnt levels of master volume for each of these sound settings - the pedal is absolutly worth the money (150 Euro).

Sound Quality : 9
The sound of this amp is incredible - great clean sounds, different levels of distorted sounds. It sounds clear and naturally warm too, it's a great amp that really bites distorted. The amp does not cover mistakes, so it's not that easy to play and sound good.
The guitars I use with that amp are Patrick Eggle Berlin Pro, Gibson Les Paul Classic and Gibson Les Paul 1954 Oxblood J.B.
All these guitars sound great with the Sreamer 50 Combo, but the Patrick Eggle is specially wonderful at the clean sounds on this amp - really good.

Like mentioned before, it's build like a tank and it looks awesome. Everybody who saw that amp, loved it on first sight just for the looks.
