Made in Germany, not sure what year. The amp is versatile enough for my style, which is mainly rock, some metal, jazz and blues. It's not just a preamp but also a MIDI footswitch, which i haven't had a chance to try out since i don't use any MIDI devices. It has 1 clean, 1 crunch, 1 soft lead and 1 heavy lead channel, which is enough more than enough in one song in my case.
The pedal also has a 1.5watts poweramp which can power speakers for low volume.
I use it at home, band practices and gigs.
The EQ section is global but it works fine for me. The presence knob is very useful.

I use it with a Parker Fly Delxe, Gibson LP gothic and Epiphone Supernova. All have 2 humbuckers and coil split on the Parker.
When I first started using it, it picks up a lot of radio siganals(pretty much everything I use in my room does that) but as soon as I put an overdrive pedal in between my guitar and the Tubetoner, it goes away. The overdrive pedal is a Zoom Powerdrive and it adds a bluesy edge to the soft lead channel, where i usually use it with.
The distortion is clear and defined. Clean sound is spectacular! It's very 'alive' and can cover chords or clean leads with the gain knob.
There's a little humming at high gain setting, as expected though.

I bought the shop ex-demo a few weeks ago and that's why it's so cheap. normally it goes for $999au, which I'll probably hesitate buying despite the excellent sound quality.
I've been playing for a couple of years. At the moment, I'm using this 'pedal'with small solid state Peavey practice amp, going into the guitar input. I'll be getting a poweramp or keyboard amp to use it with at band practices etc.
If it were stolen/lost, I'd buy it again as long as I can find one at this price. Otherwise, I'd probably go for an ENGL combo.
I wish the pedal is smaller, but I guess the footswitches can't really be used if it's any smaller.

Basically a 4 channel preamp with a 1.5 W SS Power amp built in. Basic 10 MIDI position, effects loop, frequency compensated outs, etc. THe only thing lacking is to have more MIDI flexibility and maybe seperate EQ for the clean and gain channels. Add those 2 things and it would be unbeatable for a pedal/amp/preamp!

I use a Tom Anderson and other pedals with the Tube Toner. Time based effects are in the loop. Unlike the previous reviewer I am able to get very good country-clean tones running it direct to speaker cabs or into a Germino head then to cabs. An without a doubt, great rock to metal tones. The TT is very quiet and I think it walks over every other "pedal" I've had or have. It probably deserves a 10 for what it is but because of the MIDI/EQ thing I'll give it a 9.

Probably the best $400 I've spent. I've spent half that on one pedal that does one thing and 10 times that for an amp that didn't sound half as good. And it's a PEDAL... well basically a pedal! I will get the e580 MIDI preamp next and use the TT as a BU but for now the TT is just hard to beat. For a pedalboard device it can't be beat. I'm really surprised these haven't sold better than they have.

Ease of Use

3 weeks ago, my band, Twilight Odyssey (www.twilight-odyssey.com) was performing on stage @ New York's legendary club, Lamour. Imagine my horror, with about a minute left to the third song, my Rivera Knucklehad blew a fuse! (You can read my complete review of the K-100 elsewhere on this site.) Fortunately, a friend in another band let me borrow his head for the last 3 songs of our set. Upon taking the head home however, I realized that it keeps blowing fuses. So, now my beloved guitar head is out for repair, and I have several more gigs lined up, one only 5 dyas after the show @ Lamour.
I also have a Marshall EL-34 100/100 power amp in my arsenal, and figured the best way to go about it would be to add a preamp to the rig, and have a quality back-up rig to my Rivera Knucklehead.
A quick internet search began. My criteria was simple: Find an all-tube preamp with plenty of gain, which is also easy to use, and has tone that will at least rival the Rivera, the best-sounding guitar head I have ever heard. What I found is the Engl Tube Toner.
The Tube Toner is basically 3 devices in one. (1) It is a mono, all-tube preamplifier with 2 basic gain channels and a boost for each channel; (2) It is a MIDI footswitch with 10 program change numbers, so you can have up to 10 different effects from whatever effects processor you are using in your rig; (3) It is a complete guitar head with a 1.5W solid state amplifier inside it that will easily drive a small cabinet to a good volume for practice.
The layout of the Tube Toner is very simple: It has two channels, each with its own gain, and a master volume for both channels. The channels are very easily labeled Clean, Crunch, Soft Lead, and Heavy Lead. All you have to do is push down on the silent switch for each channel. It only took minor tweaking of the EQ to get a very decent sound out of the TT.
Adjusting each channel is easy enough: simply adjust the chick-foot knob for each parameter: Bass/Treble/Gain/Volume/&c. The manual is in Enlgish and German and is very easy to understand.
The Tube Toner is a VERY versatile product, and needs to be explored in order to get all of its uses wrung from it. For myself, I'm simply using it as a guitar preamp and practice head @ home, and it works perfecly in this regard.

I would give this unit an 8 - 8.5 for sound. The Tube Toner definitely has its own sound, and is DEFINITELY designed for use in Hard Rock or Metal. DO NOT use this amp if you're in a funk or country band!! This product is known and endorsed by such Metal Gods as Richie Blackmore and Andre Olbrich, and for good reason: It's meant for high-gain, high-volume guitar playing.
My set up is very, very simple: Guitar > Tube Toner > Fulltone Fat Boost for solos > Marhsall EL34 100/100 > Rivera/Hiwatt full stack. I am using each 100W mono block of the Marshall for each cabinet. This rig can play LOUD!! The gain channel has a bit of noise, of course, but it is way below the guitar's signal once you start playing.
Playing this setup with my Wayne Rock Legend produced some of the best Metal sounds I have ever got from it! Natural and pinched harmonics just flew out of the guitar, and the natural midrange warmth of the Wayne was supplemented with brightness I never heard before. The sound also had a great 'pop' to it. Overall, I would characterize the sound as kind of Marshall-like, but much tighter in the bass department and with better tonality: just a bit more than a Marshall, but not nearly as much harmonic complexity as the Rivera or a VHT, for example. At its price point, tho, this is most definitely a REFERENCE PRODUCT.
The only two channels I have used thus far are Clean and Hard Lead, but I really love the Crunch channel, which has a glassy, plexi-like sound, perfect if you want a touch of crunch or are trying to do that Jimmy Page thing ...
With My ESP George Lynch guitar, the sound was overly bright, as this guitar just has TONS of snarl and bite, way more than your average guitar. I found that turning the Presence to 50% on the Marshall and turning the Bright switch off on the Engl produced a great tone tho: it cut through the mix just fine, and still retained that trademark Lynch sound.
My favourite artists are listed on my web site (www.twilight-odyssey.com), but include George Lynch, Yngwie Malmsteen, Marty Friedman, and Dave Murray. I play a technical guitar style in a Power Prog band based out of NYC.
I find the Tube Toner to be a very well-rounded unit with no major flaws except that it does not have a lot of low end. If you want bass or play a down-tuned guitar, you will probably want to use an outboard EQ with this unit.

Twilight Odyssey plays Progressive/Power Metal, in the styles of Rush, Rainbow, and Iron Maiden. I have been playing guitar for 20 years, and my main gear is listed on my web site, www.twilight-odyssey.com.
This unit is great, and is also no longer in production. I have one of the last ones in the US, I believe. If this one was lost/stolen/broken, I would probably get an Engl head to use in conjunction with my Rivera Knucklehead.

That is a funking great design ......
It has a low watts solid-state poweramp, you can connect this baby
with 4~16 ohms speakers cabinet such 1x12" or 4x12" cabinet when you're doing trainning in home or small size gigs

I am using a Jackson soloist with Seymour Duncan full shred humbucker in the bridge and dimarzio dual single in neck, Ibanez neck through with Seymour Duncan full shred humbucker bridge. Dean custom cadilac coupe
Seymour Duncan sh4 in the bridge and 59 in the neck
Fits the majority of my style of playing
mainly rock and metal
clean very cool a little too much mids so I use a parametric to dive 500hz and 680hz reveals a soft glassy sound.
crunch is ok I do not use this much
soft lead is great for the style of rythm I use in a pop rock band and the hard lead is great from thrash to regular rock
very focused and tight not like a Boogie or Marshall
I do not need a gate experiance teaches how to control this gain situations.
I have owned many amps and pre amps and I really enjoy this one It offers many diffrent levels of sound. Have you ever needed a little more gain in a Marshall
Or could not get the lower notes to stand out? well this really focuses the sound and delivers a tight bottom end with extreme clarity
but there is plenty of gain for shred heads.
I plug into the power sections of a Crate tube head and a Marshall
DSL 100wt head through standard Marshall cabs 1960a&b
I would recomend this pedal for anyone it is a great addition to any rig.

This floorboard preamp (made 2001) has four channels grouped into "clean" and "lead", although each channel has a distinct voicing. There are separate level and gain controls for the clean and lead groups, but they share a bright boost and 3 band EQ (lead channel has its own presence control). I wouldn't mind separate eq's, but you can compensate for that, since each channel switching button also sends a midi program change to whatever midi-controllable effect you're using. That means you can assign two midi programs to each channel (since the tube toner operates two midi banks), or if you don't want a big multi-effects unit, you can get a loop switcher and assign different pedals to each channel. (The idea to make this product a midi controller was genius in my opinion). Two 12ax7 tubes shape your sound. For outputs, there are frequency compensated line outputs for recording, stereo and mono outputs to connect to power amps or regular amps, and a headphone output. There is even a 1.5 watt power section to power your headphones if you want to use this as a practice amp. This is my main preamp, and I'm totally satisfied with it. (I say 9 only because there are not separate EQ's- everything else is great.)

I use a gibson SG special with an EMG 81 in the bridge (no neck pickup) in line with a BBE 362 sonic maximizer through a VHT 2/90/2 power amp. I will review it without the BBE, but I'll just say that when I add it in, the sound shatters windows. I play hardcore punk, but I try to get a more metal sound than you hear from most punk bands- the tube toner is great for that sound, especially if you back off the mids a little bit (I don't think it sounds good with a completely scooped midrange, but too many mids will give your sound too much bite). The treble and presence controls are very sensitive, so you can go from a dark sound to a very scorching lead (too scorching if you turn the treble and presence up too much). The clean stays relatively clean unless you turn the gain up too much- adjusting the gain in conjunction with the volume for each channel group will give you a satisfactory balance- this isn't the preamp for you if clean is your main deal, but it has a better clean than many of the other high-gain preamps i've used. The clean/crunch (channel 2) sound is great for when you need a dirty clean, and the soft lead (channel 3) is basically channel two with a bit more punch- great for bringing your sound down a notch during the quiter parts of your songs. Heavy lead (channel 4) is intense distortion at its best- you can get an insane sound without turning the gain up all the way (if you do, you'll also get an insane amount of feedback). It's not quiet, but that's what the rocktron HUSH is for... Again, i recommend backing off the mids and the high/presence a little bit, but keeping an edge to your low-end wall of sound, and then you'll have a distortion that surpasses anything ever produced by marshall or mesa. One other neat thing- with the gain turned up, the harmonics you get on the higher strings are incredible- if you're into metal, you're not going to believe what you can do with this preamp. Someone else reviewing it said that the notes all run together- I don't find that to be the case- I've used mesa and marshall preamps, and I find the note definition on the tube toner to be way ahead of what you get from those companies' products.

I would buy this again if I didn't save up either for the ENGL midi preamp or a VHT preamp- someone else reviewing it complained about the value, and I couldn't disagree more... 500 dollars for a 4-channel tube preamp/midi controller seems good to me, and if you consider the quality (and price) of the entire ENGL line, you're really getting a lot for your money. As always, the power amp you're using really matters, but for me, the tube toner is where it's at. I've been playing for 12 years, and i've owned marshall, mesa, crate, and rocktron gear. This is probably the best preamp I've owned (my old rocktron piranha is a close second)- it gets the distortion i like but doesn't leave me high and dry in the clean department, and it's loaded with features. I highly recommend it.

FX loop, two 12ax7 tubes, direct line out, MIDI out, two basic channels, wich are devided into two subchannels each. Clean into clean and chrunch, lead into soft lead and hard lead. Not enough sound versatality cause you get only two different sounds, the sub channels sound very similar just with more gain. So for sound there is a 5. As far as the other features that I mentioned is concerned, I give it a 9 because it is good equiped for a real tube no silicon preamp. Overall it is a 7.

Guitar I use is a JEM555 Steve Vai from Ibanez, the power amp is a flagship Marshall EL34 50/50 into a Marshall JCM900 1960A cabinet. This preamp was tested on side A on my Marshall power amp on side B there was my DG-1000 preamp from Yamaha that is a digital amp simulator (a la Line6). OK the sound is defenately tube like. What does that mean? It means it is full sounding and has a characteristic edge sound at the moment of the picking attack. It is kind of bluesy if you dig hard (attack hard) into strings. It also means you get a horrible microphony (feedback) with the package when turned loud. . The clean is good but you quickly run out of volume to catch the lead sounds. This means you have to ease off the lead volume to more or less even clean and lead sounds, wich I dont like. Lead is feedbacking a lot. You actually cant drive the power amp really hard cause of the noise. Bear in mind that my poweramp does not produce a hearable noise even if it is running at full power, so you might have even worse problems with other power amps. However the color of the lead is very plesant due to the natural sound and feel the tubes give. As i have said there is very little variety soundwise. The worst thing is that on the lead settings there is a very recognisable (for tube preamps) zzzzz around the note I gues. As the note dies zzzzz sound dies also of course (zero zzzz sound with Yamaha DG). That means the distortions are not so clear that you could define each string. The chords are somewhat made of one very blured bunch of sounds. This unit comes in the same price range as my DG-1000 preamp, but DG does not produce feedback, is very clear even if gain is full blast, has 128 memory places in wich you can store sounds and recall them whenever you like, is full MIDI supported, has 5 band EQ... but misses about 5 percent of the coloration the tubes in Tube Toner give. You could say DG has somehow controlled sound and TT has not.It is a matter of taste and ocasion which you prefer. The direct comparison showed how expencive Tube Toner is for what it offers. If DG had the fullnes and coloration of the TT then it wouldnt be any tube simulations. The tubes would then simulate the digital ones. With TT you have to compromise just too much and the Yamaha DG-1000 lacks very little. For a price it is a 7.

Have been playing for 7 years and have tried everithing from Fender Blues DeLuxe to Mesa Boogie Triaxis, from Boos pedals to GP 100 rack an so on and so on. I was capable to nail one single sound that I like very much from TT. That was a lead with moderate gain, so the note breaks up at the attack like a glass thrown to the wall. Very bluesy. Cannot nail exact same sound out of the DG, so here it was defeted, but that was just one sound out of 12 I constantly use with my DG. In my opinion with TT you get a little bit of everything: sound, MIDI, the stage presence (TT looks great), feel and simplicity of old floorboards. But the price sucks. Soundwise it is worth 150 or 200 dollars.
