This is a 1997 USA made Fender Hot Rod DeVille 410 tube combo-2 6L6 power tubes, 3 12AX7 preamp tubes. Stock this amp is a good blues, jazz, country, and maybe classic rock amp. It is essentially a 2 channel amp, Clean and Drive, with the drive channel having a boost into More Drive. It has Volume controls for both channels, a Presence control, and a Drive(Gain) control for the drive channel. Also has a shared EQ (Bass, Mid, Treb) and a Normal/Bright switch for the clean channel. It has an FX loop, ext cab out, and footswitch for switching between Clean/Drive. I play mainly at church, both for main worship service (a close mic set up) and for youth (no mics, must use the amp's power to be heard over LOUD drums). 60w is more than enough for both settings. I wish this had tremelo and a footswitch for the Reverb.

Sound Quality : 6
I play a 2005 Honey Burst Gibson Les Paul Standard with original PAF humbuckers in it. I use a Dime Bag Cry Baby from Hell Wah > GNX3000 > Hardwire Delay/Looper > amp.

Clean Channel: The clean is typical bright Fender and very responsive and punchy with 410's. The problem is when the volume is turned up and the amp starts pushing into break up. It starts to sound brittle and congested, very abrupt transition into distortion. The amp is fairly touch sensitive, but could be less brittle. The amp also seems to be overly bassy, which also affects the mid-range eq on the amp.

Drive Channel: The drive channel on this amp is awful. It's very buzzy and loose. It resemble either a bee in a tin can, or a big distorted marshmallow. The presence control on this amp does not do a lot and Fender(in all their marketing wisdom) chose to use a linear taper volume pot in the master volume so it is EXTREMELY touchy. Step on the MORE DRIVE button and the bee (or marshmallow) simply gets bigger, more noisey, and squeals at higher volumes. The reason I WAS (more on this later) using a GNX3000 for my distortion is the drive in this amp is so terrible. I would have given this category a 3, but the clean channel saved some of the rating.

With all that said, I would STILL BUY THIS AMP USED because you can send your chasis to a man name JIM PRICE at OMEGA AMPS (www.omegaamps.com) and he will WORK WONDERS ON THIS AMP. For $250.00 he will take the clean channel to a vintage blackface fender (think '65 Deluxe Reverb) the drive channel to a Two Rock (think John Mayer Blues) and the more drive to a Dumble/Vintage Marshall (think Eric Johnson). The sound on this amp will be LIGHT YEARS BETTER than its stock form. You can also have him add footswitchable preamp and mid boosts for additional costs. I would highly recommend his work to turn this amp into what Fender should have made.

I have only had this amp a few months and it's been out at lease once a week and been fine. It is a '97, and from what I can tell has never had any repairs made, so I would say it is reliable.

I've been playing guitar for about 5 years and I own a vintage Kustom Challenger (circa '72) that is one of the first solid state amps made. I bought this amp because I wanted to get into a tube amp and not break the bank. With 60w and 4x10 combo, this amp has good potential, after all it is a Fender. It just needs a little help to really bring out its mojo. I'll say it again, if you own, or are thinking of buying this amp, send it to Jim at Omega Amps. You'll have an amp that will keep up with or smoke a lot of botique amps, and chances are you'll have less than $1100 in your amp (as opposed to $4k or more for a Two Rock).

Not sure what year this is, made in Mexico. 3 channels, clean, drive and more drive. 60 watts. You probably know all that if you're reading this. Has everything I need.

Sound Quality : 9
I mostly play a stock mid 90's Japanese made Fender Jazzmaster guitar. the music I play is very loud, noisy and dreamy -Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., Cure, My Bloody Valentine, Explosions in the Sky. This amp suits me really well. Everyone complains about the drive channels saying that they suck. I actually like them. I don't put the gain past 5, it goes to 12. It doesn't get razorblade metal distortion, it's drive ya know? The higher you go on the gain the worse it sounds, so I keep it lower and turn up the volume which improves the tone, to my ears anyway. I've never had an amp with 10" inch speakers and it sounds really crisp and clear. A Boss DS-1 sounds really muddy and ****** compared to the stock drive channels. The reverb isn't great, you can't get that really wet, Dick Dale sound but if you add a short delay with the reverb its sounds wonderful. I run a '78 Big Muff through the clean channel and it sounds big, thick and nasty just like it should. You won't get modern rock or metal sounds from it so don't bother unless you've got a Boss Metal Zone. The other guy in my band has a silverface 100 watt Twin Reverb and this thing can over power it. LOUD. My buddy has a blackface 50 watt Bandmaster head that sounds amazing and he even said this amp sounds great. If you want great tone with enough power to deafen people, this is it.

Reliability : 9
I've only had the amp for a month and I've gigged a few times with it. No backup. I got this on ebay from a studio, never seen a stage before I got it. No problems, except the footswitch didn't work properly a couple times, may need to be replaced.

Never dealt with Fender.

I've been playing about 14 years and this is the nicest amp I've owned aside from '73 Deluxe reverb. I think I've finally found the one. In this price range, you can't ask for more. Came with a road case, so I'm set. I wish the reverb sounded better and had footswitch too, but you can't have everything, I guess. The 4 10's just sound right to me. I played my friend's 40 watt deluxe and it sounded great but I went for the Deville because I like it loud. If something happened to it I'd get another, for sure.

I bought this Fender Hot Rod Deville 4x10 new March 22, 2009 after trying out a LOT of different amps at the Guitar Center in Toledo, Ohio. This amp offers an extraordinary clean channel (with 'Normal' and 'Bright' settings via a push button switch) and two awesome drive channels. Channel selection from Clean to Drive is done via the included footswitch and you can select 'Drive' or 'More Drive' via the footswitch as well. This amp has plenty of power for me (60w) and will be used for a main practice amp and gig amp for smaller club gigs. My only complaint is the weight of the amp (~50 lbs) but it is no deal (or back) breaker. An upcoming set of casters will take care of that.

Sound Quality : 10
This particular amp - most likely due to the 4x10's - has the absolute best tube clean sound I've ever heard and I've owned/played a lot of amps in the 40+ years of guitar playing/gigging I have done. On top of that, the Drive channels suit me perfectly. The tone adjustments plus the different channels offer every sound I want and/or need.

Reliability : No Opinion
Have not owned this amp but for a couple of days but I have full confidence in Fender's product. I have owned numerous Fender amps over the years and have NEVER had any issue with reliabilty.

Customer Support : 10
No need to use it at this point for this particular amp but previous experience over the years has been great. Plus, my dealer was awesome to work with - absolutely no complaints there at all.

Overall Rating : 10
I've been playing guitar for well over 40 years, playing mostly rock, classic rock, alternative, a few metal songs, and a few country. I have always played Gibson Les Pauls as my primary guitar but have owned and used Fender American Strats and a Paul Reed Smith Singlecut as well. I always come back to Gibson's Les Pauls and currently own an L/P Classic Gold Top.

I love everything about this amp. It has an 'old school' look to it but the controls are layed out perfectly. If it were stolen, I would buy another one just like it.

The main competitor for this amp when I was shopping was a Line 6 Spider III valve amp. I chose the Fender for its simplicity and did not like all the electronics (and potential problems) with the Line 6.

The only thing I wish it had was more selectivity from the foot switch - such as to actuate the 'Bright' feature on the clean tone. Also, it would be nice to be able to switch to EL34's if desired but I was told that was not a possibility for this amp. Doesn't matter - I love the 6L6's too.

For the money, this all tube amp can not be beat.

2008 made in Mexico model. has that super glassy clean that Fender is famous for. Two drive channels, drive and more drive. The first drive is a little weak for humbuckers, but good for for my Telecaster. More drive suits my Les paul and 335. I've seen earlier models that had metal jacks but the ones on mine are plastic, so take care and they should last awhile. All your usual stuff, master, drive, three band eq, reverb and presence. The reverb is long spring Accutronics and is op amp driven not tube driven, so while good, not as deep and lush as a Twin Reverb. Very bouncy and springy with the 4x10s over the 2x12 model, might even say it has a nice "bloom" when pushed. Very loud for 60 watts. Fender has fixed the two cement resistor problem, they were 330 ohm. Fender has upgraded them with 470 ohm five watters. There was a bulletin. It was causing overheating and breakdowns. I have had mine for two weeks and have given it a good break- in. Don't see a need to retube, the stocks are fine for now, but be aware, Fender has purchased Groove Tubes. Although some years back, GT made premium tubes, they are now Chinese and Russian tubes rebranded with the GT logo, as the case with my Blues Jr.. It came with Sovtek EL84s rebranded with GT's logo. You are going to see alot of this these days. Good enough for gigging. Get a case for it and your Tolex will last the life of the amp. Great Blues, Rock amp, and can do some very good Country twang making it fairly versatile, except for Metal, but when is the last time you thought about purchasing a Fender combo for Metal? It's a keeper and will see much action, that will be the true test.

Sound Quality : 8
I play a mix of Blues, Blues/Rock and Classic Rock. This amp fits the bill, with my trusty '98 Blackface Twin Amp and small rackmount with Furman power conditioner and POD XT rounding it out. the POD keeps me from having to lug a bunch of pedals about, with good quality effects, you can pull off some amazing tones, to slight bluesy Mike Campbell breakup, to Gary Moore scorching blues. the Drive and more drive are good, but could be tighter, more defined, but are quite useable. Get a noise gate if you use the more drive at higher volumes, it can get noisy

Reliability : No Opinion
Two weeks into ownership. filled out Fender 5 year warranty paperwork and bought the performance guaranty from GC, so I think I'm covered. So far no problems, but I've never had any problems with my Fender amps, and I own a '67 Bassman head and a '66 Blackface Twin. still going strong, with the usual maintenance, as their getting long in tooth.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Dealt with Fender for years, sometimes good, sometimes not so good. My warranty center is nearby, but Charley's in dallas takes care of things for my vintage gear. A little expensive but well worth it.

Overall Rating : 8
I play a USA Les Paul Studio Apline white, a USA Les Paul Custom Classic, a '98 Korean made Les Paul goldtop with Seymour Duncan P-90s, a 2001 Korean made Les Paul Custom with Gibson 57s in it. The Korean made Les Pauls are of a much higher quality than the Chinese models. That Korean custom is 10.2 pounds, all Mahogany, body and cap, The Goldtop, a two piece bookmatched Mahogany body instead of the cheap three piece body with veneer to hide joinery on the cheaper Chinese models. A 2005 MIM telecaster setup Bluesboy style and a 2000 USA Gibson 335. If lost or stolen, I'd get another. It's a goodie.

Fender Hot Rod Deville 2x12- Bought it in Aug 2008.

This is very versatile for all sorts of styles, well if you use pedals that is.

If you live in a apartment I don't recommend you getting this amp.
Unfortunetely I haven't had a chance to use this amp with volume over 1 because I live in a apartment and it makes alot of noise. The old granny below me knocked on my door twice this week complaining about the noise and that her bedroom vibrates from the amp, imagine the volume is only on 1! Old fart...

Overall the features has everything you need including the 2 overdrive channels.

Sound Quality : 8
The clean sounds really great but you will need to have a place where you can play at loud volumes to hear the best of its sound.
It's true that the od's suck but they aren't that bad unless you're into heavy riff ****. The od 1 helped me get a sort of tube sound on low levels so I was quite happy with that, although it doesn't sound great. If you have money unlike me, you could get a nice overdrive pedal and you could use it on the clean channel which would sound great. The reverb sounds nice, I would like to compare it to the twin reverb to hear the difference though but if you have played through a solid state your whole life you'll love the reverb on this!

Reliability : 1
Before I bought this amp I used to read reviews about these amps breaking down on people but I always said to myself, as if the amp will break down on me, I take good care of my equipment. Welllll what can I say...this amp broke down on me yesterday. I took so much care with this amp, always putting the gig bag after using it at my house, I never took it out for gigs or anything like that. I bought this amp Aug 2008 and it broke down on me Jan 2009. I'm pissed off but luckily I have warranty so I don't know what will happen now but I have a feeling that the amp will keep having problems if they fix it. So yeh, even though I love the amp, i'll have to give it a 1 for reliability.

Customer Support : No Opinion
will take it tomorrow...see what happens.

Overall Rating : 8
Overall this is a great amp for all different types of tastes. What ever sort of music you're into, i'm sure you could get the sounds you're looking for with this but you will need pedals if you want to be serious about your sound. Tomorrow i'm going to take this mutha so see what happens. I'm really into good reverb, I realised that the od channels aren't that useful on the deville because you can get good pedals that sound REAL, so I think I will try the twin reverb and compare the clean sound and reverb. If i'm not happy with the twin i'll be more than happy playing this amp. I'm pissed how this brand new amp broke down on me but what can ya do?
Fu*k I wrote alot...I don't know if this made any sense cuz i'm on the piss but what ever bruddas!

Standard Mexican Hot Rod Deville with 4 10s (much better than the 12s)
3 Channels: Clean, 1st Drive, 2nd Drive
Effects loop
2 guitar inputs
Has the wonderful Fender spring reverb (wish it had a foot switch wired to it)
2 6L6 Groove Tubes and 3 12AX7 preamp tubes
External Speaker Jack.
Four 10" Eminence speakers.
Very vintage look. Top mounted controls with chicken head knobs.
Extremely responsive and touch sensitive.
Very classic amp, a lot like a 4x10 Bassman, except it's for guitar.
Pretty heavy, needs some casters for sure.
LOUD!

Graded a 9 because the reverb really needs a foot switch.

Sound Quality : 10
I use a Fender Jaguar and an Epiphone Epi-Dot, both with original pups. Screams with the single coils, and is plenty mellow with the hummers.

Great for Blues, Classic Rock, Indie, Punk, and Surf (with that great reverb). Not a metalhead's amp, this one's a bit more refined.

The clean channel is probably the cleanest I've ever heard through a tube amp in this kind of price range.
The first overdrive channel is a little weak, but sounds great for bluegrass pickin', I barely use it.
The second drive is very "rock and roll". Sounds awesome with single coils.

This amp can make just about any rock and roll sound you'd ever want. Probably the only genre this amp shouldn't touch is metal, but that's a good thing because it's a much more classic style. I also love distorting the clean at high volumes and utilizing the guitar's volume knob, the fact that the amp is so touch sensitive makes this an amazing attribute.

Reliability : 10
I bought mine from a guy that took very good care of it. I've had this amp for about half a year now. This amp is a tank, although I try to take very good care of it, I don't see any problems down the road. I gig with it all the time and it still looks brand new.

The box is extremely solid. The wiring checks out, even though it was assembled in Mexico. All the knobs are of quality. The Standby and Power switch are big and durable.

As with all tube amps you need to be very friendly with it and utilize the Standby switch when turning the amp on and off. If this is done, the tubes can last for years and years and years.

I'll probably never need another amp again, this baby will endure the test of time.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I've never had any reason to call Fender. Maybe it's because I usually don't buy cheap **** from them, or because I usually know how to fix anything that goes wrong.

Regardless, I've never had any problems with this amp, so no reason to call.

Overall Rating : 10
I've been playing for about 10 years now but could never afford a nice tube amp, although I have played several. The Hot Rod Deville happened to be in my price range so I gave it a shot. Definitely the best thing I've invested in music wise.

If someone ever stole this baby I'd be very upset and try to track them down (write down your serial numbers for all your equipment kiddies). Of course, if mine could never be found, I'd definitely buy another. This is my go to amp, the only way I'd play another amp is if I had the money for a Vintage Twin Reverb.

I love almost everything about this amp, except for the reverb not having a foot switch. It's such a great classic Fender Spring Reverb, but alas, not having a foot switch makes it almost inaccessible during a gig.

I've compared this one to the Deluxe, the Deville with 2 12s, and the reissue Bassman. The Deville 4x10 blows the Deluxe and smaller Deville out of the water. 4x10 set ups are really where it's at, you get a much warmer, cleaner, richer tone out of the 10s. As for the Bassman, it was close but the Deville's price tag sold it for me. The Bassman is a classic go to amp for many blues guitarists, but the Deville is pretty much the same amp but designed for guitar. If you play bass and guitar, then go for the Bassman, but if you're just looking for a guitar amp then the Deville is where it's at.

soooo loud and the distortion is cool with no pedals!

Well, this amp is great. it has dropped off our tour trailer 3 times by intoxicated others, have had beer spills on it and I have replaced the tubes 3 times, yes three times. love the tone for blues rock. I did add some side handles to the box because the amp is heavy. but the sound is great once you dialed in.

06 i believe do to the 60th aniversary sticker on the back. very versatile for rock blues country punk. plenty of power. 2 channels, loop, x-spkr jack reverb, bright switch. 1 eq. less is more. ive never had trouble dialing in a good sound with a shared eq.

gibson lp is great with this. great clean. drive is very good too. i use it and love. drive channels are not muddy at all on mine. very biting drive and good sustain and clear. good for early sabbath stuff indy, emo & skynard, ramones with ease. a boss metal zone is amazing with this. speakers break in after a while of use then its very good indeed to me. you can crank the clean channel for some break up but it will be god awful loud so get ear plugs first. you can turn the drive way down to 3 or 4 and use the more drive for boost. add an O/D pedal along with drve channel and it sings! these are usually biased cold at factory so search for info on that subject. the 410 deville is an awsome amp. i see them all over TV with many styles played.

some are fine some arnt. luck of the draw it seems with anything nowadays, good luck. i like the amp and will fix it if needed. keep your reciept.

fender is good on their warrenty, keep your reciept. some fender service centers suck and some dont so ask around. some centers will only repair it under warrenty if you bought the amp there so dont assume any center will fix it free.

The circiut board on my amp is dated 2002. The previous owner said he bought it in 2004. I play Christian Rock, Classic Rock, Blues, some Country -- with friends in my basement. It is plenty loud, but not too loud for the house.

Plenty of features. 2 Channels with an additional boost (more drive) on the dirty channel. No footswitch for the reverb. Effects loop. 2 jacks on the back enable an easy switch to external speakers.

Sound Quality : 10
So far, the various EQ settings have produced good sounds out of all guitars we have tried in it. But my MIJ Strat sounds especially sweet through it.

The clean channel is solid and rich, with plenty of EQ options and varieties of styles. In OD at lower settings it suits blues, in More Drive and the gain up, there is plenty of power, but the noise level is definitely increased.

In the forums there is a lot of chat about it being too loud. Mine is fine for practice levels as well as on stage. Maybe the 4-10's help the quality at lower levels?

I should mention that I changed the stock tubes with TAD 6L6-WGC's shortly after getting it. This may or may not have improved the overdrive channel, but the tubes were over 3 years old anyway.

My judgment is based upon amps I have tried in music stores. This is my first tube amp.

The original owner never had any trouble for 3 years. Still runs great for me after about a year.

I have been playing on and off for 40 years. I use a Strat, an Epi LP, Dean 12 String, PBass with 100 Rumble amp, as well as 2 acoustics with an added pickup. I am having much more fun since I got this amp. My Strat with its stock pickups sounded thin until I switched for solid state to this tube amp.

For versatility I haven't found a better deal. I would buy one again if the price was right, but would probably check out the current options.

Sound is perfect for country and/or rock. Plenty loud. Rarely if ever have it up past 4. Distortion is fine although I prefer using a pedal as opposed to the built-in drive channel.

If you're going to gig on any sort of regular basis, get a road case! Even an eBay cheapie will do. This amp went straight from the box to a road case and doesn't have a nick on it. Believe me, it will give you peace of mind. This is my main and only amp at the moment and it's never broken down or had any problems. It spent below zero evenings in the bay below our tour bus and fired up fine the next day.

The sound quality is great. I play Rock songs.. Kings of Leon, Cars, Hendrix stuff. Rockabilly, and Dinosaur JR...The 4 10's are great. I've been playing 15 years. You will love this amp. I have owned a mesa 4x12 Dual Rectifier. Awsome amp as well, but if you cant afford one, this amp deleviers let me tell you. I never turn it up past 3 on the volume, it's plenty loud, so dont worry about it not being a loud amp. Cuts through the Drums and Bass no problem. I use the blue fender groove tubes, I put the red ones' in there and it seems a little to Clean on the distortion Channels, I use a strat with a single in the neck and a Duncan Double Hummbucker in the Bridge, It ROCKS!

My amp is about 6 or 7 years old. I've had it since new.

I play blues, jazz, and punk... It holds it's own through all of them, however, the louder it is the better. (up until about 6 on the master volume then it hits a wall)

3 channels, I may use 2 but usually just one and then switch pickups for clean/dirty.

Sound Quality : No Opinion
This amp, to me, sounds great with the gain at about 4, reverb at 12, master volume at 4 and everything else moved about acording to what I'm playing.

The distortion is too brutal, and the clean is pretty clean even when loud.

I'm playing through a semi-hollowbody Gretsch with a P-90 at the bridge and a TV Jones Powertron at the neck. Through this amp it sounds awesome. It's just really warm and controlable.

Reliability : 6
I've had a few problems with it: the tolex tears off easily, odd cracks and buzzes here and there, the inputs are crap... I've replaced the tubes once, but that was after about 5 years of pretty constant use.

I've never dealt with customer service on this amp, but I've dealt with fender several times concerning other matters and have found there customer service to be prompt and generally informative, even if they can't do anything to help you...

If it were stolen or lost I might get another, but I would certainly look at some other stuff before jumping right back in and getting another. I would absolutely get another Fender though.

I love the reverb on this amp, and it's balls. It has great big balls.
I prefered the 4X10 over the 2X12, but I don't really remember what drew me to the 4X10.

Well, it has three channels but only one of them is useable...footswitches are cool. volume, M. volume, presence, bass mid, treble.

The funny thing about this amp is that is has a lot of features, yet none of them really change the sound that much.

Sound Quality : 3
I did not like this amp. It's very boxy sounding and has virtually no sustain. Notes decay really quick. The two overdrive channels are just terrible, really buzzy sounding. The most useable setup would be to use an overdrive in front of the clean channel.

Reliability : 4
Not very road worthy. A lot of plastic parts, like the input jacks....those will break real quick.

Customer Support : 8
Should be good because there are a ton of these things out there....and they're still being made.

Overall Rating : 4
It's good if this is your first tube amp, or you are learning guitar.

It's basically decent if you don't know any better. but, there are tons of better amps out there!

Why buy a three channel amp if two of them are poor?

This is a follow up to my earlier posting, and it regards my new speaker set up.

I love the combination of the Eminence Ragin Cajun and Copperheads. The blend of the two Patriots gives a distinctive American-speaker sound (full bottom, scooped lower-mids, jangly top-end, and non-aggressive), but the sound isn't hindered by its characteristics. These speakers provide a very balanced, warm tone and are very touch sensitive. The lows are tight, full and focused. The mids are warm and smoothe. As previously mentioned, the lower mids seem scoop a bit, which helps give the bass and upper-mids "space" and helps alleviate speaker-induced muddiness. The upper mids are definitely present, but they are subtle and not aggressive. The treble is chimey but subtle, so you don't get any ice-picking. Also, these Patriots are much less beamy than the stock speakers, so the sound disperses much better, and the speakers are less liking to get ice-picking when standing directly in front of them.

With 4 of them in my cabinet, the collective handling power is 300 watts, which is 5-times greater than the amp is rated. What this means the speakers do not breakup nearly as quickly (if at all) with the DeVille, and the bass frequencies come through more. Thanks to these speakers, I've been able to reduce the attenuation of my Hot Plate, which has allowed me to get a better tone, too (increased attenuation does tend to compress the amp's tone some), while maintain the same effectively volume levels. Speakers are highly subjective, but the RCs and CHs have been an excellent match for the DeVille, at least for me. By the way, these speakers handle both cleans and overdrive nicely and far better than the stock speakers.

One thing to note about installation. The DeVille's cabinet is not big. These speakers, especially the Ragin Cajuns, have HUGE magnets, which makes for a tight fit. I'm not sure 4 RCs would be able to fit - they might, but it would be tight because of the placement of the amp's transformer. I've installed the speakers in an 'X' pattern, with a Copperhead (which has a slightly smaller magnet) in the upper-left (when looking at the inside of the cab from the back) slot, and the chassis just fits back in the cab.

I understand Fender has to make decisions with the quality of some of its components. Afterall, Fender is a business. The Hot Rods are really good tube amps, and are amazing amps for their price-point. Stuffing the best tubes and the best speakers in the amp as original equipment would increase the cost and subsequently the price of the amps, and would make the DeVille too expensive to effectively compete. That said, Fender's obviously recognized that there's a market for the Hot Rods with upgraded parts, since they've released the ltd edition HR Deluxes. It would be nice if Fender also released Ltd Ed. DeVilles.

It's amazing what the right set of speakers and tubes will do for an amp. With my setup now, I would be extremely hard-pressed to part with my DeVille.

Features : 7
3 12AX7 tubes, 2 6L6GC type tubes (stock are Sovtek 5881WXT) and a solid-state rectifier. 2 channels (Normal and Overdrive), OD boost, master volume on OD channel, shared 4-band EQ and Reverb, bright switch for normal channel. Comes in a narrow panel cabinet with 4x10" Eminence made Fender 30w speakers. Speaker output and extension cabinet jacks (makes it easy to attach to an attenuator. However, the most overlooked feature is the amp's fixed bias adjustment pot, which is incredibly easy to use - all you need is a multimeter and a small flat head screwdriver, and you can adjust the bias for any 6L6GC tube on the market.

Sound Quality : 9
I love the way this amp sounds. As with any amp, the true test to good tone is how is sounds through its normal channel with the volumen turned up, at least in my opinion. The DeVille is definitely similar sounding to the tweed Bassmans. The tone is fat and articulate and crunches up very nicely as the volume's increased. With my Les Paul, it starts to get a thick break up around 5 (1-12 volume scale), and cleans up very nicely as the guitar's volume is rolled back, or picking is eased.

However, the stock arrangement of the amps is limiting to its potential. The easiest improvement you can make to the amp is to upgrade the tubes from the stock Sovteks. I am running a (new production) Tungsol 12AX7 in V1, a JJ 12AX7 in V2 and V3, and JJ 6L6CGs as the power tubes. This is the best combination of tubes (and I've tried several) I have come across for the DeVille, and they really help unlock the amp's tone potential. Warm, smoothe and fat sounding, without getting muddy.

Without question, the DeVille handles pedals very well, too. I'm primarily using a Keeley Tube Screamer and Keeley Blues Driver, and the amp reacts ideally and uniquely to each of these pedals.

The stock Fender/Emi speakers are OK. I have very recently replaced the speakers with 2 Emi Ragin Cajuns, and 2 Emi Copperheads, and thus far I am very happy with the results. I liked the stock speakers, but the bass can get abit farty with this amp (just like the tweeds), and the stock speakers didn't help it. Also, the stock speakers could get beamy and ice-picky at times. The new Emi speakers are certainly an upgrade, but the stock speakers are not bad.

As many reviews here have pointed out, the OD channel is of great controversy. I used to use it for my distortion tones religiously, but I have since been converted to turning up the volume of the normal channel, and letting my OD pedals push the amp into power-tube distortion. What I will say about the OD channel is it's not at all bad, but it is limited in capabilities. With my pre-amp tube set up, the OD channel is fat, warm, crunchy and harmonic. It's actually quite pleasing, but it's not a high-gain lead distortion. The More Gain boost functions like a treble booster and adds about 13dbs of gain to the OD. This really thickens up the tone and is good for soloing, but it at times can get way too trebly. Perhaps Fender should consider adding a toggle to control which frequency's the boost hits (treble or mids). It would make the boost friendlier. Again, this is not a high-gain distortion.

Finally, this amp can play any type of music due to its underlying tone quality and its acceptance of pedals. The amp is a star at Rock, Blues, & Country. However, this is not a Metal amp. For starters, it's based on tweed designs, which are known to get a little loose in the bass when pushed, and have an open airy distortion. These are not ideal Metal chacteristics. Also, the amp has a 410 open cab. Again, not ideal for Metal - there's a reason why Metal guys play, almost, exclusively through 4x12 closed-back cabs. But with the right pedal in front, the amp can pull off Metal.

Reliability : 10
I've owned the amp for 7 years and have had no real issues with it. Yes, it has PCB circuitry, but so what? I don't buy into PTP or hand wired being inherently better than PCB. It's all about the Quality Assurance department. As far as I can tell, my amp is just fine.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never had to deal with Fender.

Overall Rating : 9
I've been playing for about 15 years and have had my Deville for 7. I love the amp, though I do wish it were lighter. Yes, it could be a little more flexible (refer to comments on more drive boost) with some of its features, but all-in-all it's a helluva amp, and priced VERY reasonably. I do check out other amps from time to time, but I do not seriously see myself selling or trading in my Deville. I only wish is was covered in Tweed with Oxblood, rather than the black tolex.

Since I favor single channel amps, this recent model 4x10 HRD has more features than I really need. However, with its channel switching capability and added ("more") boost, it can certainly cover a lot of bases, from beautiful classic Fender clean to brutal raging overdrive. My only complaint is the "vintage-style" placement of the controls on the top of the amp. I'll never understand why that layout is so popular. I much prefer having the controls facing forward (blackface style) where I can more easily see and adjust them on stage.

Sound Quality : 10
The clean channel is to die for, and IMO, worth the price by itself. I formally owned a reissue super reverb, and to me, it did not sound as good (despite costing a lot more). In stock form, however, I found the overdrive channel too hot, and the "more" boost simply unuseable, at least for classic rock and blues. Also, as many have pointed out, this amp is very loud - probably too loud for most small and medium size venues.

For those who like the features and 4x10 format, but find the amp too powerful, here is what to do: Replace the 6L6's with JJ 6v6's (and rebias to about 40mv). This will reduce output to about 30 watts and basically give you a DRRI that is more versatile and bigger sounding. This is a standard conversion offered and explained by Bob at Eurotubes, and it really does turn the HRD into the "perfect" club amp. In addition to the 6v6's, I went with Eurotubes' "Blues Option" which replaces the 12AX7 in V2 with a 12DW7. This significantly "tamed" the overdrive channel, and rendered it much more useable (even in "more" mode). The amp, which was always very good, now sounds incredible.

Reliability : No Opinion
The amp, of course, is all PCB, but it appears neatly laid out, and I like the fact that you can make bias adjustments simply by removing the back panel -- no need to take out the entire chassis as with most amps. So far so good, but I never gig without a back up (Crate Powerblock).

Customer Support : No Opinion
I don't know about Fender customer support, but there sure is a lot of good online information available about the HR series of amps.

Overall Rating : 10
I've been playing for 30+ years and have owned all kinds of guitars and amps. My favorite tone is an LP played through a clean Fender amp on the verge of breakup. This amp, as modified with 6v6's and 12DW7 in V2, is IMO the ultimate club-sized amp. It sounds like a DRRI on steriods, pumped through a 4x10. How can you beat that?!

I bought this amplifier in mid-late 2006. I was running out of clean channel head room with my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, which is only 40 watts. So I figured the Deville's 4x10 speaker layout would do a better job not actually knowing at the time of purchase the Deville is a 60 watt rated
amplifier.

So I was very pleased to learn the Deville is pretty much the same
amplifier as the Deluxe with a rated 60 watts power output.

Going from a single/dual layout to the 4x10 combo is night and day
(for me) about getting the tone/sound out.

Sound Quality : 8
I really like the amplifier sound/tone... I'm using it as a gig/show
& tour Amplifier pretty much every week.

Other than a Marshall Overdrive sound (at full volume) there's not been
an amplifier with built in distorntion that I've thought was really
great. As a person who builds and repairs amplifiers I know how hard it
is to make good dirt that makes every player happy.

The clean channel is great... I'm not able to run the 60 watt Deville out of head room like I could with the 40 watt Deluxe.

The dirt - distortion channels are rated "OK" to pretty good for what they are. Park and use a TS-9 pedal in front of the amplifier and
use the amplifiers dirt channel for soaking the distortion when you
need it. Maybe a T-Bone Pedal if you want a cheap and easy Heavy
dirt. But for most covers and conventional dirt the TS-9 pedal
down front gives me enough choices to play everything on our set list.

Here's the bad part...

I toured quit a bit with my Hot Rod Deluxe when the channel switching section blew out at a show. I fixed myself... which wasn't hard but
not fast when you/I didn't have the original parts in stock (I do now).

So after I fixed and well tested my old Deluxe I traded it in on the
Deville 4x10 Combo. Nothing like a nice new amplifier to know where you stand right..? Not so in this case. About 8 months after I bought it the amplifier died at the start of a show.

Turns out the problem was a failed output tube and some bad connections on the output tube(s) circuit board where the parts
meet the board (called a fractured trace at a solder joint).

So I've fixed the amplifier while doing some pc board trace mods to
ensure the fractures won't again appear in the near future.

I blame the Fender Factory Supplied Groove Tubes for the failure
and the pc board trace work mostly future problem prevention.

If tube & tube socket and part vibration is going to be a source of pc board trace fractures then we'll surely see more reports of this type
of problem. I guess we'll see what happens over time...

Customer Support : 5
Fender would probably have fixed the amplifier if I'd left it with
the shop and they sent it to a repair shop. But hey... I do that sort
of thing myself so I fixed it.

The tubes were reported to be covered for only 90 days. :-(

No thanks to Groove Tubes for blowing a lot of smoke up my backside
when I both emailed and called them to report this problem. They're
nice enough to talk to me after a bit of dance and sing but there was
no offer to replace the faulty tube... even thought I didn't really
ask for replacements. I thought they'd want to know about the
premature tube failure. I received more sales pitch about upgrading
to another tube type vs sincere concern for the original problem
(failed tube). But that's what happens when you fly high and the
ground is out of sight far below.

I've had mixed bag results with Sovtek sourced tubes... so out came
the original Fender Groove Tubes. And the story goes on....

Replacement Matched Set Fender Groove Tubes bought at the same
store were so hot they wouldn't even allow the proper tube bias to
be set. So I'll return them as crap and keep the generic (non Grrove Tube) Sovtek replacements on board. They have been unconditionally
stable since I put them in and that's nice to see.

Because of recent experiences I'm un-selling myself from using or
providing Groove Tubes in any future work. I just don't need the
extra work.

Overall Rating : 6
I love the Fender HR Deville Amplifier as one of the best over-all layouts ever made (and I own and have tried a lot of guitar amplifiers).

I'd buy another just like it if this one went away...

What I like is how the amplifier is/has almost everything you'd ever need to play regular shows/gigs/tours if you're not a person who hides
behind a lot of effect pedals.

The only bad thing I can really say about it is the weight... but I've
just put original casters on it... so that's made a nice difference in moving the amplifier around.

I wish it had tilt back legs like the twin so I bought some original
Fender Tilt Backs and plan to put them on as soon as I work out the
mounting locations. Once that's done the amplifier will be all I can
ask for.

If the now repaired amplifier holds up I'll be very happy. I need an
amplifier I can trust to make a show... so it will be a while before
I again go out without a spare (which I shouldn't do anyway) amp in
tow. I guess time will tell.

I bought this amp new about a year ago. I was looking for a three channel amp, since I want as simple of a pedal arrangement as possible. This amp fit the bill with three sound possibilites, (Cleans, drive, and more drive), although this is one channel that keeps boosting the signal. I use the effects loop with a chorus pedal velcroed in with the straps on the inside of the amp used normally for the cord. This keeps the pedal off the stage. I play rock n roll, more on the pop side, nothing on the metal side. I use this amp for live performances. We practice with small amps, no PA, etc.

Sound Quality : 9
I use this on stage, and it is more than loud enough, as a matter of fact, way too loud. By the time I get it turned down to where the sound man wants it, the tone is gone. Although I loved the clean sounds, and outright tube sounds from this amp, I found them rather uncontrolable. I like the clean very punchy at times, but by the time the volume was high enough, the amp would be distorting. Also, the master is only a master for the drive channel, and you cannot lower the clean sound without dramatically changing it. So... I made modifications. In the clean channel I use a 12AY7 tube, which makes a dramatic difference. The sound doesn't start to tear until you turn the gain up to 7 or beyond. I put a 12AT7 as the last in the preamp chain which greatly reduces the overall output of the amp. Now the major changes were having a true master volume installed where the pilot light was, and a micro-light placed next to it. I also had a "high-low" switch installed next to the output speaker jacks inside the amp. Although this does not cut the sound in half, it really reduces the blatantly overbearing loudness with the amp. With the tube arrangement, master, and hi-low switch, I can use this amp and always get the sound I want at the volume I want. This amp is and was a very clean amp, little or no noise.
I play a Samick Rl2 through this amp. The pickups in this guitar are a mystery, and not what was supposed to come in it. The guitar and model number are mismarked, so I'm not sure what was done to it at the factory. I have a Gibson SG and L6, but for some reason the Samick makes this lovely sound and gets along great with this amp. The SG is too hot, and the L6 is too bright.

Reliability : 9
I do depend on this amp. I've used this amp for a year, a few gigs a month with no issues. The footpedal broke last week. The left switch quit working. I thought that was ridiculous. I took it apart and the switches that are wired into the board seem cheap, and I couldn't match up a replacement part. I bought a new pedal since it was cheaper than having this one fixed.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I've had no reason to contact customer support. When the pedal broke, I bought another one. When thinking about this amp, which we (the other guitar player and I) each bought, we called Fender reps, and their california center with question and always received curteously and prompt replys.

Overall Rating : 9
I've been playing for 40 years. My previous amp that went on the road with me for years was a musicman 65-210. That was a super-cool amp, but a little too edgey for me as time went on. I wanted a cleaner sound. If this amp were to dissappear, I would look at everything out there again, but may get the same amp again. I love the look of the amp, the raw tube and edgeyness of the amp. I like 4-10 speakers, and the blonde covering. I wish it had a factory master switch, factory Hi-Low switch. I wish the foot pedal was made with better parts. They have upgraded in input jacks, and some of the electronic parts inside the amp over the years, the foot switch needs attention. Oh, and it was a great value. I found out that's because it's mainly computer built, and very little time by hand, which makes a great amp affordable, but expensive to have modified.

Gibson LP standard, Fender USA DLX Strat. you cant go wrong with this set up. very loud amp though, you'll never need more volume than 2 on the dial at a bar gig. if you do, your lucky, congrats! dont worry about what number its on. use your ears for volume and tone. runs quiet, at least mine do, some dont i hear. pedals through the front end works great!

Now the volume being touchy is not a gimick for kids to be trapped in buying at all folks. Real pro's use the volume knob on the guitar. Thats why its there people. Ive seen pro blues guys 60yo crank the clean up and use the volume knob on the guitar for the desired sound. turn down for clean sounds and up for blues grind. It works! Without a pedal. You have to practise using it that way, its not easy. But wow!

I compared this with a SF Twin Reverb at Guitar Center. No difference in tone to my ears. I dont work. I gig only. 5,6 days a week so I think I know a good tone. Hope so! Clean channel cant be touched! period! Drive channel is excellent! More drive was a brilliant idea and sounds freaking great! True Tube Tone! Dont expect a built in METAL ZONE PEDAL though. But what you get is enough drive to get you through a gig if your metal zone breaks. You may not think so, but through a PA the more drive will shine through clear as a bell and make you think again. I let a friend use my HRDX and I listened to the more drive with a 57 in front and I think different now. You'll see. Remember, if you suck, you suck. Period! Keep working on your skills.

The amp was made in late 2004 or early 2005. It looks pretty cool with black tolex and a silver grille...kind of a vintage vibe...but all business. I dig it. There's one channel worth discussing and it has bass, mid, treble, presence and reverb. 4x10 combo, all tube with a solid state rectifier, which is perfect because I don't need Neil Young's tone and I don't need a loose bottom end to prove that I am sweet.

"The channel" is clean and sparkly. It is loud. It will not break up at any sort of useable volume. This is good news to me because I have a bunch of pedals that I put in front of the amp and they sound outstanding. I have a way too expensive homebrew overdrive, a way too expensive option five phaser and a carl martin red repeat. They all sound awesome through this amp. I play a g&l guitar that sounds awesome through this amp. A lot of my friends play through this amp with their pedals and their humbucker equipped guitars...they too sound fantastic. So at the end of the day, I treat this as a one channel amp for all all of my clean tones w/ a touch of reverb (classy), and it takes pedals very well. It has all the volume you need. Sweet clean tone...cannot emphasize this enough.

Reliability : No Opinion
It's a tank. Major plus. I have considered going out and buying a budda, a marshall, a top hat, a vox...etc. These are all incredible amps. But then I play my fender and realize...
1) I never take care of it, it has no maintenance issues.
2) It's not that expensive and it won't bust.
3) It kills on the clean channel and let's me rock hard with pedals.
4) This amp is butter, it looks sweet and the reverb is very useable.

It's a tank, so I don't know.

If you need to have an amp that costs over a grand...go for it. I have expensive equipment that I enjoy playing too. That being said, my advice is to not blow cash on expensive amps unless you really want amp distortion. For some it's nice to have four channels and 15 knobs, but it's not worth it if you can kill a gig with one awesome tube channel and two or three decent pedals. I am so happy I bought this amp.

Oh yea...make sure to get the 4x10. It's candy.

The clean sound from this amp is untouchable...period. I've tried 'em all, and there's nothing out there that can play clean like a Fender, and this is one of their finest examples. Enough clean headroom to wake up Gerry Garcia.

The dirt ranges from a slight bluesy grind, to something not unlike an older JCM 800. There's enough grit here to easily pull off Priest/Maiden/ACDC, though not quite enough for say, Pantera or Megadeth.

The dirt has a tone of it's own and either you love it, or you won't, and I find that what I feed it has a large bearing on the sound. My main guitar is an old San Dimas Charvel Strat (SSS) with a Seymore Duncan JB jr in the bridge position. Sounds amazing for what I want out of it.

I bought this amp brand new from a music store in the UK. I have been playing over 30 years and now play in a 60s/70s gigging band. We cover blues , rock, country of that era and find the features excellent. The eq however is a little subdued. I find I have to turn the treble, bass and mid up to over 7 or 8 to get a huge noticablr difference in tone. This is 60watt valve amp which is very, very loud and has more than enough guts for any - and I mean any kind of gig

Sound Quality : 9
The sounds are typically US bluesy SRV/hendrix/BB King. In fact it is so versatile it can be used for rock and country. However as other reviewers have said - don't expect metal overdrive - not even on more drive. I can't understand how some people criticsize the gain channel. It is pure valve tone especially with the master on 5 and volume on 3 with the gain lights on the footpedal. Absolutely beautiful , just breaking up tone which sound fluidy and understated. The clean tone is superb. Te best I've heard on any amp. Beatles classics sound true and clear. You can add a little dirt by just flicking to drive and turning down the vol pot on the guitar. I only play my two strats through this amp. Never used gibsons or PRS etc. The single coils love this amp. You can get a real lift when you switch to bridge pickup on drive in a solo. I'm sure you cold hear me from across the pond if you listened hard enough. A gorgeous, pro sound.

Reliability : No Opinion
Hope it never lets me down . If it did I would be truly disapointed.

If it got lost or stolen I would have to have another. Perhaps I would spend a little more cash and get the Blues DeVille Deluxe rather than the Hotrod. But there is very, very little difference. The Hotrod sound is as good as it gets really. I stay away from effects. I only use a wah and a chorus/delay. I would never , ever use any kind of overdive or booster pedal with this amp. I think that would spoil the lovely natural overdrive on gain channel. I don't use more gain at all - but it's nice to know it's there. As a very experienced guitarist I can't understand the criticsism some give this amp for drive channel. I would ask them to check to see if their amp has a fault

outstanding clean channel - maybe the very best there is
worst dirty channel in the business
although the clean is incredible, i do not believe that any amp should ever have a channel in it that sounds as bad as this dirty channel

I bought this amp used in mint condition. I believe it's 2003 or 04 model. It works great for the styles of music I play; Blues, contemporary Christion and some country. I personally like the "extra" features. I"m used to a Blues Jr, no bright switch, poor reverb, no effects loop, only one input, no external speaker jack. So this amp was big step up for me in features. I don't mind using my reverb sparingly and then leaving it, although a swtich would be nice, it's not a big deal to me. This amp has waaayyy more power than I need. I bought it becuase I was blown away by the sound of the amp, primarily the clean channe but have come to really like overdrive channels for blues and the more gain for that extra lead boost. I would like a bright switch for the gain channel so it gets a 9 for the lack of the reverb switch and lack of a bright switch in the gain channels.

Sound Quality : 10
Like most have mentioned the clean channel draws you in. I heard and played this for about 15-20 minutes at a local music store. Went home thinking I could get over it. But that sound and the price drew me back within just a few minutes. I had to have it. I've not been dissapointed. I really only us this in my music room, I consider it too much to gig with at my church. I use my Blues Jr. for that. The Deville sounds so big and has such great tone that I find myself dreaming about it when I'm away. (I'm sick, I know) I too am puzzled that some folks really diss the gain channels. I've run my Boss BD2 into it and compared that to the drive channel (not more drive) and I've found the effects to be similar. I find that I'm just as happy with the drive channel as I am using the BD2. So I us the BD2 with my Blued Jr. only. I play a variety of guitars through it and find that all of them can be dialed in to sound great. 3 strats, 2 tele's, a Les Paul, and a 63 Danelectro with lipstick pups. The amp is stock except for a tube replacement. JJ's for the OT, and EH 12AX7's for the preamp tubes.

Reliability : No Opinion
I've only had this amp a couple of months. I did have to replace a couple of plate resistors to quiet down some crackling. That was an easy fix and is now very quiet in the clean channel. A bit of hiss in the gain channel, but I found that if you PLAY the GUITAR, that sound more than drowns out a littl bit of hisss. I haven't had the amp long enough to really comment on reliability.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never used them.

Overall Rating : 9
For the money this amp is a killer deal. I love the sound of the 410's. I may not know what I'm missing by replacing the stock speakers, but I'm thinkning "if it aint broke don't fix it" I love the way it sounds completely stock.

This is a late model, & all the features were previously discussed.

I do have a bone to pick with the design of the footpedal. It's a big waste to have a two-button footswitch only operate channel switching and not the reverb. As a result, I don't use the footswitch.

It feels well constructed and doesn't rattle even at high volumes. It's a good-sized amp and has a nice stage presence. I was pretty happy that it's not backbreakingly heavy either-- definitely weighs less than a Twin.

Idunno if you'd call this a one trick pony. If so, its trick is infinitely listenable. You just need to go into it knowing its caveats.

Sound Quality : No Opinion
This amp gets along well with all my guitars- an Italia Modena (vroom vroom), an Epi Dot and an Italia Rimini 12 string. I have a sparse pedalboard of od, fuzz, delay & reverb (because of the damn footswitch) and the amp operates noiselessly with them running in front.

10 for the clean channel, it's good business. Really good in fact, and it's the reason I use the amp. Very clear bell-like tones, extremely responsive to pick attack. As others have discussed, it's ***really frickin loud***. With the presence control set high and the bright channel engaged it's perfect for lead tones, rich without being shrill and sounds great in the mix. Some of the most beautiful sounds pour out when playing high up on the fretboard with a guitar equipped with P90s. Seriously, heaven raining down on the people.

As I mentioned, I play with a Vox V810 Valvetone OD that really sings. For fuzzy leads I use an EH Graphic Fuzz and it just wails-- think Airbag from OK Computer. Gigantic huge fuzz that eats up the room.

The reverb gets an 8 at best, it's a useable sound but not in the always-on / always-off position, so the lack of footswitch really kills it.

The drive / gain channels?? They're pretty miserable. Muddy, cold, flat. I don't really understand what Fender's logic was that someone would pay $800 for an amp but not drop a few bills on a distortion pedal.

Reliability : No Opinion
Um, hard to say. I practice with this amp three or four times a week and have been for the last four months. Twice I've experienced it cutting out unexpectedly. It comes back if I power down the amp for a minute and bring it back up. I'm going to have it benched before I bring it on a gig, and there will definitely be a backup.

Customer Support : No Opinion

Overall Rating : No Opinion
I'm overall pretty happy with the amp. If it fizzled at a gig I'd destroy it. I was working with one of the Valvetronix modelers previously and like the way this handles in comparison. It's comparing apples & oranges but the super expressive footswitch on the Vox was an excellent detail. It records well and cuts through the mix. It's a keeper.

This amp is mid 90's model, made in USA, has clean & overdrive channel with a "more" drive function that acts as an overdrive boost with more saturation (sort of a 3rd channel). Tone controls are straightforward Bass/Middle/Treble, with Presence, Reverb, Drive channel preamp volume and master volume. other features are Effects Loop, Aux speaker output and footswitch for channel switching. Tone controls are shared for both channel but there is not much of a tone variation from channel switching so this is not much of an issue. Features i wish it had would be Reverb footswitch function.

Sound Quality : 8
Clean sounds on this amp are very good, Reverb was a little swampy and overbearing, this was easily remedied by removing resistor R-103 right under reverb pot, very simple mod that improves reverb function immensely. Overall the clean sounds a lot like the old Fender "blackface" clean that we all know and love which is why i bought it.
The overdrive channel is not the best around but it is very useable. I find it works best when setup for milder overdrive to the point over good sustaing notes, then kick in "more drive" feature and this baby sings. I auditioned this amp with a modified strat and an Analog Man modded TS-9, I found the overdrive channel on a mild setting kicked Analog Man's ass, and the "more drive" is a nice bonus.
A couple of things worth noting-
this amp responds extremely well to effects running through the front end, my Aramat Green Machine Vintage Tone Project 60's fuzz, MXR EVH Phase and Vintage FX Tremolo all sound fantastic thruogh this amp. I have a Boss Delay machine going through the loop with excellent results.
Also, the stock Eminence speakers sound like crap IMO, i am just not a fan of early speaker breakup. Out goes the stock units, in goes a set of Jensen Mod 10-70's. These speakers kick major ass, are very inexpensive ($118 for 4) and completely save the tone on this amp, clean headroom goes up considerably. I would rate the sound quality about a 6.5 with stock speakers.
As it stands this amp will run circles around my Rivera S-120 combo but not my Soldano Decatone.

Reliability : 5
Not at all bad for a entry level priced mass produced tube amp. My amp has a couple of reliability issues with the footswitch that i have to look into. This is a very serviceable unit, pull the back panel and blammo, quick access to the guts for bias adjustments, ect. Build quality is good overall with the exception of those damn plastic jacks, which just plain suck. Otherwise pretty roadworthy.

Customer Support : 10
I have emailed Fender about the heat resistant foam padding for the preamp tubes, actually got a response in less than a week and sent me the part free of charge for an amp i bought used, that is remarkable for a big corporation.
In addition, when you buy any Fender product it is like buying a Harley Davidson, you have tons of support in the aftermarket as far as parts, mods, and techs who can hot rod the hell out of these things. As a bonus you have name brand recognition for resale value.

Overall Rating : 8
I have been playing a long time, owned lots of gear and feel qualified to say that this is a good amp.
My main objective was to use this amp as a platform to have it modded and see if i can make it into a very roadworthy combo and bring the sound quality up near my Soldano so i don't have to schlep a head and 4-12 rig to bar gigs. So far i am most of the way there, next stop is to send the chasis into Omega amps for his tone mods and metal jack replacements. I've heard a lot of great things about them, stay tuned for that review on the Omega Amps section. If I accomplish all of this for well under a grand i would say that's a fantastic deal.

One of the best Fender amps ever produced. Enough headroom power to be loud and clean, or break up nicely on gain channel. Handles pedals well.

Gets loud fast. Too loud for home recording, but with its open back it's great for gigs w/o using a mic. 4x10's have tons of bass and fast response.

"More Drive" is not my style, but Fender seemed to have wanted to get loads of distortion at store volumes. Use a distortion pedal instead.

Sounds like a real Fender. Kind of has a mass produced vibe to it, but delivers the goods. I bet there are a lot of boutique amps based on Fender designs that would lose to the Deville in blind tests.

Loud enough for any venue. Heavy.

2006 Model. I play rock/blues/funk and the amp works perfect for all those. I can get a fairly high gain sound but why would you really need anything higher than that unless you're playing Cookie-Monster metal? 2.5 channels, clean, drive/more drive. No headphone jack, although I wish it did because this thing is LOUD. I'm fine with it not having a bunch of features besides reverb though, because I usually like Chorus Ensemble pedals and delay pedals anyway. I play in a touring band and this thing's a tank. Definitely enough power because I never have to push it above 4 and it still kills. All tube amp.

Sound Quality : 8
Playing through a Reverend Club King 290. Sometimes I do get a little squealing through the more drive but I never use the more drive. Thinking about investing in the Boss Noise Supressor. The music is perfect for my style, because quite honestly, I'm tired of all the "modern" sounds, the really high gain stuff that has no definition to it. I love the clean channel. Distortion is not brutal, but it'll scream even on 2 or 3. As stated before, this amp is extremely loud. I can't really practice on my own with it because below 2 or 1 you can't hear the distortion.

Reliability : 10
Yeah, I will use it on gigs without backups. The amp has never broken down and I've had it for quite some time. I love it.

I've played through a Marshall TSL, played through a Voodoo, other amps, and I do love this amp. It's no Voodoo or vintage Marshall, but for $799, I love it. I was deciding between an AC30 or the DeVille, and ultimately went with the DeVille because for the price, you can't do much better than that. Plus I got the blonde finish and it looks remarkable. If it were stolen, I would most likely buy another, but I have to admit, I'd like to save up and get the Marshall SLP.

Seems to be a pretty solidly built amp. Fender says 3 channel, I agree with a previous review that says one. The tone stack business just doesn't cut it. The effects loop has the tendancy to be a little noisy. Also for some reason my Wah Wah (Hammond Organ Crybaby Vintage 70's) won't work inline between my guitar and amp so I have to stick it in the effects loop (see above noisy) The noise isn't horrible but it's more than i've ever had to deal with before. Still a nice 2X12 60 watt tube amp thou. At 53lbs its not all that heavy. Way lighter than my 2X12 line 6

Sound Quality : 9
:D CLEAN!!!!!! Thats where this amp really shines! Tone doesn't come out of this amp it oozes out like warm butter. Seriously this amp has one of the best clean tones i've ever heard. The day after my line 6 died I laid out of work and mourned my loss by driving to ever music store in the area (5 or so) and playing tube amps within my price range. This one had the rest of them beat hands down, as well as some of the other fender models. the normal drive channel is more what i would call overdrive, good for bluesy stuff i suppose. If you want a fuzz sound i'd reccomend sticking something else with the amp my choice was a rocktron silver dragon.

Reliability : 10
I don't think i'd ever gig period without a back up. It hasn't broken down on me. Is easy to work on. Sounds good. So no complaints here.

I've been playing for 14 years or so. I have several other amps, this one is my favorite by far. I love the tones i can get out of it, coupled with the silver dragon its a match made in heaven. On the day I decided on this amp I played through the Kustom Coupe '72 and '36, Crate classic 50, Marshall TSL, and a bunch of solid state amps. This one was my favorite. I do wish my wah worked inline with my guitar, i do wish the effects loop was a little quieter. Perhaps i'll get a hush kit or something.

Bought new in 2005. Features have been covered but I will add a few comments on some of them. Okay, the amp has shared EQ for the channels. Many do this, and it is kind of a shame but you know that going in.

Overall, this is a killer amp (more on that below) but there is one thing about it that just bugs me no end. The footswitch. I find ONE of the two overdrive channels useable. By that I mean I can either set the DRIVE or the MORE DRIVE to be usable, but not both. Problem is the difference in volume more than even the difference in gain. How does the footswitch come into this? Well, because they decided to use a two-button footswitch, they used it up letting you go from clean, to DRIVE to MORE DRIVE, but they have NO FOOTSWITCHABLE REVERB.

This may not be a big deal to some players. Some either have it on all the time or off all the time. But traditionally, they broke with convention...so it must have been discussed in the design phase, and someone made the terrible decision to just not have an on/off or footswitchable reverb. For me this is a very bad thing. I often like to go from 'verb to dry (it has the effect of making it seem like the guitar came from further away to suddenly right THERE) or vice versa. Often songs with abrupt stops sound SO much tighter without reverb.

To make it even worse, the reverb knob is WAY too sensitive (linear pot) which means it is very haard to get the exact level of reverb you want. To make this EVEN worse, there is no on/off switch on the AMP either for reverb. So if you want it off, then on again, it is impossible to set it back where it was exactly, and small increments make big changes.

I solved this by buying an EBS Dynaverb, after spending a LOT of time trying out 'verbs, and this one seemed to be able to get closest to the built-in 'verb sound. And of course, being a pedal it's foot-switchable.

Note also that it seems Fender did the sales trick of making the volume pot linear also (fools kids who turn it up to 2 or 3 in the store, have this LOUD volume, and think "wow...wait til I get it home and turn it up to 10!" not realizing they are only going to get a little more out of it.

Okay, those are the negatives. I don't mind that the legends on the knobs are upside down, though it is a minor problem with the white-on-chrome to read the knobs without having to shade behind them with your hand to read them. After a while you know which is which, but it is a case of trying to make it seem vintage, but making it less easily used. Many do this though, so no big points off for that.

As others have gone into this, just thought to mention, the effects SEND/RETURN works very well, the extension speaker jack is pretty flexible as you can insert a dummy plug also in the main jack (going to the 4 10"s, 4 ohm if I remember right) and use it as a head, or use an 8 ohm speaker cab using all speakers, buil-in and extension.

I use my amp stand alone sometimes, and if space allows I like to use a Marshall 4 x 12" cab to mellow out the sound a little.

I'm giving them points off (bigtime) for the reverb decision (not footswitchable) and the other stuff I mentioned. The effects loop is fine, but I expect that.

I have several amps, and in my opinion, JUST thinking about features, Carvin does it way better than Fender on plain tube amps. Carvin (at a fairly low price) gives you seperate EQ on each channel, extra presence on the Lead channel (talking about the Carvin MTS series), siwtchable impedance, footswitchable channel/reverb, switchable between 50/100 watts, line out (voiced line), SND/RET. Those features on a Hot Rod (DeVille or DeLuxe) would be KILLER.

Sound Quality : 9
Okay, features-wise I was a little negative. Just to mention I have had the amp now for almost a year. Have played it in our band rehearsal, at home, and out on gigs. In the meantime I have aquired a handmade Fender BAssman 5F6A, which I am in LOVE with, and which gives me much clearer, shimmering, indescribably wonderful sounds, BUT...the Hot Rod is no pig in comparison. They actually compiment each other. I had thought about selling the HR when I was buying the Bassman, but in the end I decided to keep it. I'm very glad I did.

The cleans on the HR are VERY nice. They are a little "fat", but there is a wonderful feel and sound to this amp. I almost wanted to not like it so much, but I have to admit there is DEFINITELY something special about the sound of this amp, especially cranked a little. Alone, in a small room, practicing...it isn't nearly as good as cranked, in the mix. It cuts through nicely. When I play it right next to the Bassman, the Bassman is much "clearer" the HR sounds...I don't want to say muffled because it is the wrong idea, but slightly less defined, but in a good way. I can get Freddie King, BB King, SRV, Hendrix (both the harsh and the mellow, from Voodoo Chile to Wind Cries Mary), Clapton, just...the only way to say it is, some amps are just amps, some amps are like "partners", and this one feels like a friend I can depend on to help me make good music.

I also have read lots of folks HATE the drive channels. I don't know what they are using them for or expecting from them, but personally I like to set one or the other (DRIVE or MORE DRIVE) for a slight breakup and find I can use that just fine...though mostly I do stick to the clean, using a Zendrive for OD, and a Jekyll & Hyde for a second and third OD. But I also use the Drive. As mentioned above, for me the difference in volume makes it so I can only use one really.

I haven't done ANY mods, my amp is stock. I use a 4 x 12" extension cab sometimes, but gigging out with just the amp (not miced even) works fine and dandy, and this amp has killer sound.

I am seriously considering doing that mod where you tie one side of one of the EQ pots to the wiper, and get more control of the bass pot. The bass pot doesn't do as much as I'd like, and the EQ stack si very interactive. Also thinking of modding for the brighter sound (mods mentioned in previouse reviews). But really, just stock, this amp sounds wonderful. I highly reccomend it. If you are like me about the reverb, and really want it footswitchable, I would look into a Blues DeVille if I were you, but I've never played one so it is just from hearsay and features.

I play (as you may have guessed) lots of blues, als Hendrixy rock, and almost anything. This amp is a sure thing as far as I am concerned.

Reliability : 7
I love this section, where folk that have had NO problem with their gear, diss it because they read someone else has had, or even several. It ought to be YOUR experience with it. Also can we stop with the "built like a tank..."'s? Folk give reliability ratings because it's HEAVY, or has a metal case. Has nothing to do with it. I think you ought to not give a rating if you've only owned something for a few weeks, UNLESS you already had problems with it.

Had the amp for a year, about, and have carried it to practice every week for most of that time (now I leave it at practice), and no problems at all. Still, a year isn't so long, and I expect that. It isn't a sign of excellent reliability. But, no problems whatsoever.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never dealt with Fender. Hate their website. TOO miserly with info, not enough historical information. Still I can't have an opinion about their support without having used it.

Overall Rating : 9
I have a couple of strats, many pedals, other amps I currently have and use are (not in any order of esteem, just random); Carvin MTS 3212, Peavey Classic 30, Fender Prosonic head, hand-built Bassman 5F6A (the BEST Jerry, the BEST!!), Carvin Vintage 33, Crate Taxi, little Crate practice amp (solid state, but COOL!), Roland Cube 60 (one from the 80's, one from yesterday), and I used to own an Ampeg VT-22 410.

This amp is right at the top of the list for me. My Bassman gives me something this amp doesn't, but this HR is EXCELLENT and well worth the money. Wish it had the footswitchable reverb, since I have other backup amps, I may try and see if I can mod it. Mainly though, this amp, STOCK is one of the best amps I have played.

It's human nature to expect ALL features to be the BEST, but honestly, if they had marketed this amp with NO drive channels, just a clean people would be in love with it. But instead they're going "damn...the drive channel sounds like bees in a can" (well, not to me, I use mine and think it sounds great), but again...pricewise, if it only had the clean, it would still have effects-loop, reverb, and a different but equally complementary sound to the Bassman RI LTD, which has no verb, no "switchable channels", no extension speaker out, etc.

Also, I love the sound of 4 10" speakers, but also it works really well combined with some 12"'s in an extension cab.

I don't know how these amps are made these days, but mine is a '97 from when they were still made in the USA. It's got your basic three channels; clean, dirty, and more dirty. It's got the classic Fender reverb, and from the looks of the reverb tank, it seems to be standard Fender issue. I have the 4x10 model. It's all tube, American made glory, which is really hard to find in an amp these days for under $1000. Yes, it does have circuit board in it but so does my '79 Marshall JMP, and so do alot of other well made amps. It's as heavy as a brick sh*thouse.

Sound Quality : 9
I have never posted to this board before, but after reading the previous review, I felt I had to. The guy says this amp has the worst dirty channels he has ever heard. Now, I don't know where or when his was made or if there was anything wrong with it, but I am a pro player in an international touring band and I have played through many amps and, for me anyway, this is hands down one of the best sounding amps I have played through regardless of price. The only sound you won't get from it is a high gain metal sound (which you can get from it with the use of pedals). If you want classic rock bliss (think stones, beatles, eagles, yardbirds, even ac/dc bluesy stuff). The clean channel simply smokes esp. with the reverb. For country or rockabilly it's just insane. I can get the classic Johnny Cash boom-chika-boom-chika sound. I even had a guy like the sound so much, he traded me a Mesa Boogie Mk4 for it which I did because I was playing in a punk band. A few years later I got it back from him and fell in love with it all over again. The only flaw I can find is in the "More Dirty" channel which can get a little noisy. I see this amp all the time in the backline of major players (not so much the 2x12 version, which for some reason did not sound as good to me when I a/b'd them). I've used this amp with Les Pauls, Tele's, PRS, you name it. I will probably never sell or trade this amp again. I give it a 9 because of the dirty "More Dirty" cannels noise issue and because I haven't played a 10 yet.

Solid. Never had anything other than tubes needing to be changed.

I've been playing for 25 years. Main guitar is a Les Paul or Tele. I've played all kinds of music. If this amp were stolen, I would buy another one but I would look for one from the same era. The bad reviews make me think the workmanship of the new ones has gone down hill. The people I've heard talk sh*t about these amps have usually been gear snobs (The same type who claim to hear the difference in what color cables they use)

decent features, seperate eq would be nice
i hate bright switches

Sound Quality : 6
the clean is very good, not fenders best, but very nice
the drive is honestly the worst drive i have ever heard
worse than solid state, and totally unuseable
you have to run pedals through the clean channel
which sounds great, this amp loves pedals

who knows, honestly, i have my doubts about mexican made gear
although, i love the mexi strats

Bought it in used in "like new" condition so I'm guessing it's not more than a few years old. Won't bother listing all the features. If your interested in this amp you probably already know what they are. 60 watts at 8 ohms. Accepts an 8 ohm extension speaker cab. I have an 8 ohm 2x12 cab (w/ vintage 30's) that will be interesting to try at some point. My only reservation is the reliability of the solid-state reverb driver and recovery circuitry. Would have been happier with separate EQ for drive channel but I hasn't been a real big problem with the kind of music I use it for (blues, jazz, classic rock).

Sound Quality : 9
Primary guitar is an American Strat with stock pickups. With a smidgeon of reverb, chord comping is heavenly. I stick primarily with the clean channel so solos can be a little thin sounding. I remedy this with a Way Huge Green Rhino (think Tube Screamer with better bass response) and a ED-1 compressor to kick the preamp a bit harder. The amp is dead quiet on the clean channel but can be noisy on the drive and more drive settings. Clean channel will break up at higher volumes with the stock (SOVTEK) preamp tubes. I replaced the Sovteks with NOS and put a lower gain tube in the phase inverter position with fantastic results. Replacing the stock preamp tubes significantly increased the clean channel headroom and even tightened up the drive channel a bit. Highly recommended. When I started looking for a new amp, I was nearly convinced that I would be going with a Blackface reissue. After a half-dozen trips to Guitar Center and a few other music stores, I could no longer resist the gravitational pull of the Hot Rod Deville. Though it doesn't get you all the way to Backface territory, it can come pretty damn close and leave you the option of opening up the mids for a fatter sound. All I can say is that my Hot Rod Deville and my American Strat is a match made in heaven. The drive and more drive "channels" can get a bit loose in the low end at higher settings, especially with the neck pickup. Flip over to the bridge pickup and yer rockin' out without the flub. Right now I'm fine with the clean channel and my stomp boxes.

Reliability : 9
I've owned several Fender amps and have never been let down. Treat it right and keep spare tubes handy and life is good.

I only had to contact Fender once to get schematics for a discontinued solid-state (M80). They were friendly and helpful. This was 5 or six years ago though so who knows what the current state of affairs is.

Been playing for over 30 years. I have a boatload of amps and effects collecting dust in my closet. I guess my taste is more towards simplicity these days. Like many, I've been lured to the "dark side" by slick marketing hype and technobabble. Now that's all flushed out of my system and I content to stick with what works. Besides my '65 Bandmaster, this amp is a keeper.

Built in 2005 i suppose since i bought it last saturday and it was still packed. Hot rod Deville 410.

Sound Quality : 10
It sounds great, i play rock 'n' roll/blues (jon spencer style) and the Deville is the one i was lookin' for. It's fat and delicious, actually a gift from the sky for my sound. I'm still experimenting with the eq, the drive and the reverb, but everything comes out of that Thing is gorgeus. Pure deep and crystalline clean channel and saucy 60's overdrive, got it: drive "take it easy and rock" and more drive"Start kickin' the jam"...It's got the blues in fellows, DA BLUES is in it!

It's brand new, but it's the only i've got (i spent a lot of cash for it here in italy) and so it's my amp for giggin' and i'm proud of this. but it looks strong, it fuckin' Heavy in fact. i go for a 10 'cos i trust in it

I am happy with my Hot rod Deville next to me.

The one i own is a 2002. I've replaced the tubes 3 times in it with the fender groove tubes, each time the amp comes back to life. It has 3 channels, but the overdrive is very thin. Clean, drive, moredrive. The moredrive is pretty heavy (can you head the outro to give it away by RHCP playing?). The footswitch is pretty handy though. I wish there was seperate EQ for the drives and stuff. I use this amp in my band.

Sound Quality : 6
Lacks the low bottom.... Nice clean, but buy some distortion pedals or overdrive pedals. The built in stuff really doesn't cut it. I play some SRV, the red hot chili peppers, sublime, and some audioslave in my band. I use an american strat with texas special pickups and it really sounds cool on this amp. without a noise gate you will receive very bad feedback from the distortion.

Reliability : 10
Its never broken down on me without any problems..we practice every week and play a show about every 2 months.

I've had it for 5 years now and it's played a lot of shows with me. I'm trading it in though, because the low end isn't cutting it. Get a Marshall half stack if you plan to play in places bigger than clubs. Your sound will fill up the room more and people will be able to feel you play, not have to turn their ear toward you.

this amp is your stepping stone between a 2x12 combo and a half stack.

I got the amp in 2001. My style of music is Blues Rock/ Classic Rock. The three channels suit me fine and the drive channels have eliminated the need for a distortion box! The amp is REALLY loud!! I kill my drummer on 4!! Sometimes it can get a bit 'bitey', shrill even. But then again, I play Strats....so a little knob tweaking will cure that! The tube warmness is fantastic. The clean channel is Fender pristine....enough to do a convincing cover of SRV's "Lenny". The dirty channels can conjur up Hendrix, Trower and the like easily!!

Sound Quality : 10
I'm using several Strats with it: a 1979 Antigua Strat with DiMarzio Virtual Vintage pups, a 2003 American Deluxe Fat Strat with a DiMarzio Super Distortion in the bridge, a 2005 Deluxe Players Strat with Fender Noiseless pups, a 1991 fender Heartfield Talon with 2 Seymour Duncan Alnico II's and a Fender Noiseless in the middle. My effects are as follows: A SKB PS-45 board..Fulltone Clyde Deluxe Wah, Dunlop Jimi Hendrix Classic Fuzz and Octave Fuzz, Fulltone DejaVibe,Danelectro Tuna Melt Tremolo, Line 6 Roto-Machine, Boss DD-3 delay, Fulltone Fat Boost, Boss Tuner. The amp cover my set list nicely.

I purchased this amp in 1997, the serial number seems to indicate that it was made in 1997. It has three channels, clean, and two overdrive channels. 4x10 cabinet, 60 watts all tube. Sadly, no separate EQ for each channel. Effects Loop, Reverb, Presence, and a Bright switch. In other words, all of the tube amp must haves except for the separate EQs.

I play all kinds of music and what I play has changed over the years. When I first got the amp nine years ago, I played hard rock and metal. Now, I play blues, classic rock, R&B, and some jazz.

This amp has sufficient power. Really, too much power. That's my number two complaint about the amp, number one is the crappy input jacks. More on that later. I have changed the volume pots to audio tapers and its still just way too loud even at "low" volumes (I rarely turn it up past 2.5). Mostly, I use it for practice in the basement, but when I play out (once every month or two) I always use it for that too. I get to turn it up a bit more (but rarely past 4) on these occasions. I of course have cranked it up to 12 on many occasions, but I think 4-6 on the volume knob is the sweet spot on this amp.

Sound Quality : 10
I use an Ibanez S-Classic with the Infinity pickups (bright, throaty, lots of midrange), a strat with standard pickups and a Seymour Duncan Hot Rails in the bridge (which is a very hot pickup), and my personal fave, an Epiphone Dot 335 with Gibson Burstbucker Pros (which are made to replicate the Gibson PAF pickups, which are arguably the best ever made).

The clean channel is heavenly. With all of these guitars, I can hear the guitar's personality. Setting the EQ properly really makes a big difference, though. I tend to like Mids on 12, bass on 4, and treble on 8 with presence on 12, bright switch on, and reverb on about 4 and I get a just plain delightful sound, esp when I crank it up to about 3 or 4. To die for, if you set it right. Some people turn everything up, or scoop out the mids. It won't sound so nice if you do that, but I don't think any amp would.

The drive channels sound the same to me tone-wise, exceot one is drive and the other is more drive. One is saturated. The other is REALLY saturated. I happen to like the tone, though I have seen that many reviewers do not. I have to admit, I do with that I had separate EQ settings for each channel, but honestly, the amp has served me for nearly ten years so I guess I don't need that. With the Epi, I get the creamiest tone esp with the neck pickup. It is a great sound! The strat with the SD hot rails pickup is VERY saturated, I used to play lots of Metallica, Danzig, etc with it and it sounded great, Pinch harmonics squeal for days. I think the trick to the drive channel is to roll the drive down to about 6 for really heavy stuff, rather than crank it to 12. 12 sounds a bit too fizzy for my tastes, even with the metal stuff. Now, I keep the drive on about 4.5 and use the drive for leads when I play blues and the more drive for classic rock leads and I love the sound. It doesn't sound like, say, a Marshall in terms of crunch, and it doesn't sound like a Blackface Twin either. But who expects one amp to sound like another? It has its own character. If I had it my way, I would probably have this and a Blackface twin so I could have more variety. Even if I had the blackface twin, though, I would still use this amp. The one group this amp will not work for are those who want a harsh distortion. But those folks don't want a tube amp anyhow so that is irrelevant.

Reliability : 8
Generally, this is a reliable amp. I have had one very annoying problem with it: the plastic sleeve on the imput jacks. The jacks are soldered directly onto the PC board. The jacks also have a metal nut threaded on a plastic sleeve (I am no engineer and I know this is a Bad Thing). Well, as you may have guessed, after about 7 years the plastic stripped and the jack was loose. Later the loose jack, due to normal use, managed to break the solder connection to the PC board. When I would play Bb, I would get a HORRIBLE buzz. This totally killed a live performance, much to my annoyance and embarassment. Fortunately, it was not a paying gig. At least it was easy to fix. I put a new ALL METAL jack in the amp, soldered some leads to the PC board, and problem solved. However, I would have gladly paid $100 more for the amp to cover the cost of decent input jacks.

Otherwise, this amp has served me well for nearly ten years with just one tube change / biasing. Maybe having all that extra power is a good thing, because it does not seem to wear tubes out quickly.

Otherwise, the only things that concern me are the fact that this thing does have a PC board, but point to point wiring would maybe triple the price tag, so who is complaining? Also, it would have thrilled me to see porcelain tube sockets instead of bakelite or plastic or whatever, but again...you'd have to shell out twice as much for a Mesa to get those things. Or put em in yourself. Don't think it'll pose a problem in the forseeable future, but I would have been giddy to see better parts like porcelain tube sockets or all metal input jacks, etc. But I digress. I can't complain. Nine years, one problem. I wish Fender made cars.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never dealt with 'em. Probably crap, though, like everyone else.

Overall Rating : 10
If this amp came up missing, I would *maybe* play a deluxe reverb cause it's smaller or find a Mesa Boogie Lonestar for the same price (not gonna happen). Either one of those amps would have to floor me, though, to make me switch from the Hot Rod DeVille.

I have found some sites which outline some neat modifications for this amp. I have changed out the pots with audio taper pots, but I have been considering a few other things. All in all, this is a great amp. Yes, I have a few minor complaints but for the money, and even for twice the price, this is a great amp. I will give this a ten, because it is a fantastic value. It's not perfect, but if you want a "perfect" amp, you have to shell out a LOT more cash. If you find a better amp for this price, I'd love to know how I can get one. I played small Mesas, an Ampeg Reverborocket reissue, Marshall heads, a Fender Twin, not to mention all of the crappy Crate and Peavey amps that music stores try to push on you. I bought the DeVille.

Bottom line:
Cons: too heavy, too powerful, and some cheap parts.
Pros: plenty of power, superb tone, great value.

mostly blues and southern rock.Always in search of tone,i go with the univibe, the blues driver, and the vox wah. This amp sounds fantastic. I had my questions about what the les paul was going to do through this thing but that lasted for about three notes. I've had this amp for a year, got it from guitar center. It's got (one) three channel(s)and a master volume knob for distortion and a gain booster for solos. Came with a foot pedal. It also has reverb and a bright/normal option, which are nice. The reverb i don't really like above 2 or 3 on the dial. I would say that this amp is actually too loud for playing in a basement or a small gig. It's loud.

Sound Quality : 6
The clean is pretty good, so i use that and toss an overdrive pedal in the mix and i'm set. The amps distortion is ok, but a nice overdrive pedal can provide a more full and rich overdrive. I use a homebrew power screamer, and play a g&l comanche. It sounds pretty good for rock and roll and jam stuff.

Overall it gets the job done. If I had the free cash I would invest in something like a mesa boogie lonestar. The lead guitar player in our band just picked one up. That thing makes my guitar sound really good. But if you don't have the flow, rock the deville. It's loud, I think that should be stressed here, lot's of volume. If it were stolen, i would shop around and maybe upgrade, but for now i like this amp.

This amp has a lot of great features. The Preamp Out jack is incredibly useful, especially if you have other amps with a Power Amp in jack. It also has the ability to run it's own speakers and an external cabinet at the same time.

However, the downside to this amp is that it only has one EQ for both the clean and drive channels. This is a pretty big downside because it takes away from the usefulness of the drive channel (which is kinda useless to begin with).

I think being a 4x10 tube combo is also a big downside to this amp. It's pretty difficult to transport. It'd be a whole lot easier if you bought a head and then used a 2x12 cabinet or a combo with an extension cabinet.

The footswitch doesn't switch reverb, it only switches the clean/drive channels and the more drive on. It also can't turn off the effects loop.

Sound Quality : 6
I played this amp with an Epiphone Les Paul Standard.

The clean sounds and reverb are amazing, like the clean tones and reverb on most Fender amps. It can do pretty much any clean tone you want, you just have to work with the EQ to figure out the tone you want. The presence control lets you make things brighter, which is nice. If you're looking for great clean sounds you can't go wrong with this amp.

The drive/more drive sounds are horrible. The drive/more drive channel is incredibly muddy, and I'm not exactly sure what causes it. The EQ doesn't really decrease the muddiness, and you also have to remember that there's only one EQ for both channels. It's very difficult to find EQ settings that work well for both channels.

If you wanna turn up the clean channel really loud in an attempt to get a good overdrive, you'd be better off with a much smaller amp. The Fender HRD doesn't break up until very loud volumes, because it has 60 watts and 4 speakers. Occasionally I would turn this amp loud enough to get that tube overdrive from the clean channel, but it was so ridiculously loud that I could practically use the sound that came from it.

I've read that if you change the tubes that you can decrease the muddiness of this amp but if you're spending $800 on this amp new you shouldn't have to buy new tubes for it.

You'll have much better luck with this amp if you use an overdrive or distortion pedal. I used a Boss DS-1 with this amp (for 3 years) and it sounded pretty decent. I recently purchased a Vox Pathfinder 15R though, and upon hearing the distortion sounds of that amp, I realized that a Boss DS-1 with a Fender Hot Rod is only mediocre sounding.

My suggestion to anyone looking at this amp is to only buy it if you need to play clean stuff really loudly. There's no point in buying this amp for its tubes, because the big positive about tubes (better distortion) isn't there. You'll end up using transistor/solid state distortion from a stompbox. If you want Fender tube distortion, go with older Fender tube combos. I have a Fender Vibro Champ now and the sound on that is much better, but it's only 5 watts.

Reliability : 10
It's really dependable. I bought it used and never needed it serviced or anything. Since you can never use the full volume of the amp the tubes last forever as well.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never had to deal with them, so I can't say.

Overall Rating : 5
I've been playing 6 years or so. Currently I own a Vox Pathfinder 15R and a 1960s Silverface Fender Vibro Champ.

If it were stolen or lost, I would buy something else. I sold this amp on eBay just last week, and ended up buying the two amps I just listed above.

I ended up buying this amp because I desparately needed an amp at the time for a band I was joined. I had no idea how much volume I needed so I just bought the biggest tube amp I could afford, which was the Fender Hot Rod Deville.

The two things I love about this amp are its clean tones and reverb. They are amazing. You can get the same clean sounds out of other amps though. I've found that my Vox Pathfinder 15R gets equal if not better clean sounds than the Fender HRD. If you really like Fender cleans, get a Fender amp, just not this one.

The things I hate about this amp are everything else basically. It's distortion and overdrive sounds are horrible, and no one should buy this amp if they play any kind of rock music. There's only one EQ for every channel. It's bulky and is difficult to transport, especially for a combo. The footswitch can't control the better features of the amp (fx loop and reverb).

You can do much better than this amp with less money. Just realize that if you're looking for a tube amp for good tube overdrive/distortion sounds, this amp won't get you them. You're just going to end up using a stompbox. I would suggest to anyone seriously looking into this amp, to get two older Fender tube combos and run them in stereo. You'll be able to get a good stage volume, good cleans, and good tube distortion sounds.

You have read them all before. Could use separate EQs for both channels and a wet/dry control for the effects loop. I hardly ever use the "More Drive" mode and if I do it's with the gain turned way down.

I play '70s rock, blues and country rock. (I am 45, so you understand where I am coming from). I am pretty much a straight into the front of the amp guy now a days, I do use a Marshall Jackhammer on the O/D setting sometimes.

However, I am a tamperer.....

I have changed the preamp and phase inverter valves from 12AX7s to NOS 12AT7 Brimars. I have also changed the 6L6GC power valves for some NOS Phillips 7581a valves and biased them at 70mV.

The improvement on an already fine amp was HUGE! I shit you not.

The lower gain preamp valves calm everything right down and enable you to actually use the volume and drive knobs. The clean headroom has gone through the roof on the clean channel and the drive channel is absolutely fantastic, it now has way better response to the guitar's volume controls and is way more touch sensitive.

I play a 2004 American Deluxe Tele with SCN pups/S1 switch, a 2005 '61 re-issue SG and a 2000 ES335, both with '57 Classics and this amp reacts beautifully to all of them. Each guitar has considerably more "individual personality" with this valve swap.

I briefly tried a set of Celestion Tube 10 speakers and didn't like them. Very muddy and narrow frequency response. My SG sounded like crap through them and my Tele sounded like it needed new strings. I refitted the stock speakers and they seem fine. There may be better, I am open to suggestions. The stock speakers do tend to break up a little early for my liking. Rating pre-mods:7. Post mods:9.

This is the second one I have had, the first one blew up the second week I had it. I have had this one for 4 months now, (warranty replacement). The effects out doesn't work on this one anymore.
I haven't had it back to the shop because I have to take out the valves, replace the stock ones, re-bias it, put nail polish on the bias adjust pot so it looks like I haven't played with it......

Customer Support : 10
The shop I got it from replaced the first one with no questions asked, never dealt directly with Fender, I am in Brisbane, Australia.

I have been playing for 35 years and own 10 guitars, the ones I mentioned are the ones I use most. I also own Marshall and Roland gear and this amp shits on them. If it was stolen or lost I would take the insurance money, get another, do the same mods and be happy.

I am a little suspect of it's long term reliability, but we will see.

It would be a much better if Fender would save the money on the "More Drive" mode and spend it on and adding seperate EQ controls for the 2 channels. A mix control for the effects loop would be nice, (mine doesn't work anyway).

I use a fender 72 custom, never have it above 2 for practice in a loud praccy room. clean channel is sublime. i don't use a lot of heavy od but i think if this is your bag you'd be better off with a marshall anyway. my style is snappy, angular guitar chops (i.e. Bloc Party, Devo, Futureheads) and it works fine for me.

i don't use a lot of reverb in my sound anyway, but the reverb on this is as good as any amp i've heard.

i'm a fender nut anyway, still madly in love my old princeton.

a beast of an amp, though if you are seeking the ultimate amp (one that you will never seek to replace) and have the money then go up a notch and buy a pro series Concert reverb.

however, this is an exceptional amp for the price and has its own sound that is fantastic in its own right.

However....

I use a lot of e-bow and it strangely seems a bit 'cloudy' on this amp. a bit of a let down.

and, you need to do some serious work in learning how to position yourself to prevent quite annoying levels of feedback.

but, other than that, this is a fine amp which i would recommend to anyone who is after a modern, fender type sound.

Just purchased in 2005. If you are reading this review , you probably already know the standard features of this AMP. Briefly , I play rock, funk , blues, and some jazz. I do gig occasionaly, but never in a large or loud setting. I have not been able to raise the volume or over-drive above 2 with either band I am in. I understand however, that this is really due to the 'linear' volume control versus and 'audio' volume control. I'm so glad to come back to real 'tubes' from amp modeling technology. The 'feel/response' is what I was raised on.

I think I will try the 'yellow jacket' tube exchange system to reduce the output power, but wish Fender would provide an optional volume control for this amp. Also , give me a break , a 12 setting??

Sound Quality : 10
OK -bottom line its Strat's for me , only Strats, I have a few and have played professionally for 12 years and now in 'hobby mode' for 18 years. The conclusion you can make is that I have had a bunch of amplifiers - mostly good ones. The first thing 'out of the box' I noticed using my guitars with this amp(not when I demo'd the amp in the store with other guitars) was the amazing sustain on the clean channel. The touch sensitivity and response (picking style dependent) is exactly what I was looking for. I tried a bunch of guitar amps in and around this price range prior to this purchase and they didn't compare. The over-drive and more over-drive is a bit 'buzzy' which smoothes out at louder volumes. The clean sound is amazing...... even sweeter than my old hot-rodded Twin Reverb. Unfortunately, I had to purchase the amp and take it home to realize this. In the music stores, there was always to much going on , and I feel its pretty rude to pump up the volume while other people are trying to figure out what they are buying. I'm real picky about my sound (probably somewhat fanatical) and this amp meets my requirements.

Reliability : No Opinion
If it is anything like my old 65 Twin (please someone kick me for selling it years ago), it will be great. I won't re-bias this amp or mess with the 'innards' other than the tube swap. I wanted 'out of the box' sound and got it pretty close to what I was hoping.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Not sure that Fender, Peavey, Marshal, VOX, Mesa, Crate, really care a rip about me. But they got my money because of their good product. I hope I don't have to call them .....its probably someone from India I would be talking to and I don't own a SITAR.

I will play until I can't hold a guitar any more. I have collected a lot of 'this and that' over the years. This amp has received the musician coveted 'dude!' , ooooo, ahhh, sound approval from the bands I'm in. They are calling me the 'tone-a-lator'. I just wish the amp made me play better! I would only want that there was more volume control capability. I don't want to void the warranty by putting in a different potentiometer even though it doesn't look hard to do. Its a bit aggrivating to adjust the volume between .5 and .75 of 1 to get the level correctly. I would buy another or a Super Reverb (used with a master vol) if I lost this one.

3 channels - clean, drive, and more drive
bright switch
I bought mine in 2005 new, Heres the features,

4 band EQ - Bass, Middle, Treble, Presence
Fender Long tank spring reverb
effects loop
fotswithchable channels (switch included)
3 12AX7 Preamp tubes
2 6L6 Poweramp tubes
4 10" special design eminence speakers
60 Watts output power

This amp is a great versatile amp depending on your style you can set it up for almost any typle of music. I'm giving it a 8 because of two things first the plastic input jacks. Not to coming with Fender products, but anyway they are getting replaced. Second is not reverb switch on the footswitch pedal.

I play many Blues, and was looking for that fender classic sound. I got it and some more. I first the overdrive channel was to muffled for me and to much drive. So I got a hold of Bob at Eurotubes.com and he hooked me up with some great sounding tubes that took the drive out and raised the mid's to take out that muffle sounded in the overdrive, and now I can used the lead channel for my solo's. Perfect Thanks again Bob. And the clean channel is just what you would expect from Fender, it doesn't get any better.

Fender product have been good to me over the years so I would hope that this one would live up to Fender name.

I been playing for over 15 years and my music style has changed over the years, but with that I have own alot of products and this amp is great for Blues and classic rock, but I would recommend new tubes, and if you can afford it weber speakers. I have also owned the 2X12 model and I regreaded selling it forever, but when it came time to get another I fell in love with 4X10. It just has a much fuller sound. I also play a Peavey Classic 30, I would have to say I prefer the Fender for blues, you just can't bet a Fender for that Blues sound. Also for this amp my american Strat and Tele sound the best.

The amp I bought was a 2003 brand new. The amp has the classic reverb that has always defined fender tube amps. I play in an original/classic rock band with a minimal effects besides a wah. There is more than enough power for the gigs we play and it is nice to have the extra width provided by the 4x10 cab for outside gigs. It can be a little loud at times. The only tone I cannot achieve is the overdrive marshall tone but it IS a fender after all.

Sound Quality : 10
I play a PRS with hfs pickups and a sweet 57 goldtop reissiue. I have been playing for over 20 years and have numerous amps in the past but this amp just spoke to me in the store and just had to buy it. There is a big difference in the 4x10 version and the other combos for variety of reasons. I feel the 4x10 sweeter and more warm than the others I have tried but subjective of course. I would highly recommend this amp.

as far as comparsions. I used to have a mesa boogie heartbreaker 2x12 combo which had great low end and tone however I had a hell of a time getting a reasonable volume to play the gigs we were playing at the time. The amp was Entirely too dam loud. The hotroddeville is a great amp that has alowed me to get any volume I may need from small wedding receptions to full rock concert outside gigs without trouble. No regrets

Lets face it. A true tube amp is not feature packed. I bought mine new in 2004. I love it so far. I didn't think I would like the "more drive" feature. It sounded harsh at low volumes in the store. on Gigs, at stage volume, it works well. not harsh at all. Great reverb.

Sound Quality : 9
I play alot of country, southern rock and Blues. This amp does all of these things well. One thing i have had to change is.. I had to switch to using my Strat with this amp. I had been playing my Nashville Tele. which has Tex-Mex pickups. The over wound pickups sound muddy on the clean channel. Switching to the Strat with standard pickups sounds much better to my ears. The other issue i have would be the volume of the amp. LOUD. I know that is not really a problem. You know how tubes are. They sound better when pushed a little. There are places I use to mic my amps that now I don't. The 4-10 set up really fills the stage. As for the clean channel, It has a really great Bassman break up starting around 6 or seven but, I rarely play venues big enough to support that kind of volume.

Reliability : 7
I did have to take this amp in after only a couple of Gigs. They told me it had a solder joint broken. Service man said he had seen this a few times. I am afraid it was due to my wood sheding rather than actual gigging. I tend to be louder when no one "should" hear me but me. No trouble after that.

Customer Support : 7
My repair was done under warranty. I have never gotten an amp back as soon as i would like. took two weeks. I have learned to never be without a back up. Just in case.

Overall Rating : 9
I have been playing for 23 years. I use a Boss phaser, Boss analog delay. compresser. No outside distortion source. I like to get all my distortion right from the amp. This amp does exactly what i need it to do. I love the 4-10 set up. I never thought i would say this but, the only thing i would change would be a little lower wattage. I know the deluxe has 40 rather than 60 but, it only has the 1-12. not good for me. If this one was lost or stolen i would get another.

the reverb is great, as well as the prescense knob which can really bring out the top boost. the overdrive has a great sound for blues and rocknroll, and ive used it in a punk band as well.

i use it with noiseless pickups and play alot of classic rock and blues, as well as jazz. its not very noisy even when gain is all the way up. when reverb is cranked the guitar can make amazing sounds off amp feedback through mutepicking and just banging the strings around.

My amp is dated 2000,and it's very veratile,I've played everything with it,evry time excellent sound. I play psichedelic rock, and covers:beatles, pink floyd, radiohead, rolling stones..A (very)clean channel, overdrive and a more drive channel with a switch pedal;send and return in and out,a great reverb(regulable only with a knob, maybe a pedal should be more comfortable).Three simple equalization knobs very influent, and a useful knob for presence, and a little switch on the left for the brillant sound I always use.Two tubes + 3 on pre.

Sound Quality : 10
Great sound ,four speakers, very spacey sound and powerful above all,the volume knob is up to 12,I use it at 3 and is a bomb, even at open stage.I use a strato and a tele.the distorted channel is very fat and vintage,it gives you a lot of bass frequences so you must pay attention on the regulation.I play a lot,and I could test it in a lot of situations, and it never let me down.

Reliability : 9
Is very strong,I've used it for four years very often,I've never changed the tubes. It just make a strange noise rarely,in my opinion because I connected a bass to it and maybe a speaker could be a little damaged, but nothing bad.

This amp offers more than any fender tube amp out there with 2 OD channels and one clean. The EQ is a MASTER for all channels with a presence control. I love the 410 configuration. Also, offers a PLUSH fender reverb. Also comes with a external speaker jack, foot switch and cover. The amp is 60 watts of tube power, very loud.
THIS IS MY FAVORITE FENDER AMP !

Sound Quality : 10
Ok, this is the second HOT ROD 410 i've owned. I've come full circle on fender amp buying (i'm tired...). I've tried and bought most of the fender tube amps, thinking the Super Reverb or TWIN or Concert Reverb would be the ultimate. so, after all that experience, i decided to go back to the HOT ROD 410, since it has the warmest tone and offers the most. This amp is a BRAND NEW 2005. PLEASE PLEASE would some one explain why this amp sounds better than my 2002 Hot Rod 410. The older one's OD channels (red/yellow) just didn't thrill me, but the OD on this new amp is amazing. I don't understand why.....It has the same fender speakers and the same GROOVE TUBES 2x(6L6B) and 3x12AX7. This amp's OD sounds better than the old one, less brittle. WHY I HAVE NO CLUE (same guitar). The clean and reverb have always been my favorite with this amp, but this OD really adds. I love the amp and plan on keeping it. The amp does have great head room on the clean, works great with OD pedals. THIS IS A VERY LOUD AMP and shakes the house at level 4. ANOTHER thingy i've notice is the VOLUME CONTROL on this amp. The older amp i had (410 hot rod), the volume would JUMP UP when turning it up from no volume to some low volume. I didn't like this because in some cases for quiet evening jaming in the basement it would be too loud. With this new one, the volume doesn't JUMP, so another added BONUS. Hmmmm, maybe i lucked out or FENDER finally pulled their heads out and read the reviews on harmony central. I know if i made amps, i'd read all the reviews, DUH !

If this amp was stolen, I would buy another. I love the amp because it offers quite a bit for the BUCK$. what do i hate about the amp ??? NOTHING REALLY. I did compare it to a lot of TUBE AMPS i've had over the years. I'm a BLUES/VINTAGE ROCK guy. I think this amp covers that type of music with flying colors. I also love playing this amp on a quiet evening in my basement strumming some beautiful pink floyd chords (BREATHE for example). I personally don't think there's a better fender amp out there. I have really gotten carried away with equipment, I want it to stop with my all time favorite sound, an AMERICAN FENDER STRAT and the HOT ROD 410.

FENDER HOT ROD DEVILE 4 x 10 (2004)

2 Real channels Clean & drive (theres also a more drive option)
speaker output jack (i saw a cab for this on ebay, but you really will not need this unless you wanna lose ur hearing.

All valve

footswitch

master reverb

The thing about this amp is it doesn't have enough features for you to use it without FX. It is however a great base for you to build your sound on.

Sound Quality : 9
I use fender vintage reissue Telecasters and play quite heavy alt. rock (kinda pumpkins siamese dream stuff)with punky influences.

The clean channel is excellent- it rings like a bell - no complaints there.

The crunch channel is good if you wanna play country rock/ blues / retro stuff. Not so good for real hi gain.

The more gain switch just thickens up your sound a bit- which can be useful when you need an extra boost but its not controlable so usually doesnt do a lot. I found the distortion on this amp to polite and very unfocused on the lower strings, so i bought a russian big muff for ?37 new off gak.co.uk - problem solved, it now has all the balls you need & fills the sound perfectly.

THIS AMP IS SERIOUSLY FUCKING LOUD - with this amp and a good distortion pedal you will not be beaten in volume by ANYBODY. If you're wanting an amp for private practice or pub gigs, go for the 2 speaker version, I played a gig with that and its also great .

The reverb is OK but a bit harsh & trebbley when u whack it up full.

Interestingly this amp doesnt work to well with my E Bow.

Stick it on the crunch channel with the gain half way & ur guitar volume rolled back & got that plunky blues sound you've heard on all ur old records.

This is a versatile amp, its a great foundation that can handle anything you want to build on it.

Reliability : 3
My amp has been very unreliable.

A week after I bought it a preamp tube went. Although the stock tubes are groovetubes, they are the shittest tubes that company produce & cheap & nasty- get the gold series installed & the deville will sound noticabley better.

The sound on mine started cutting out, kinda like when ur input jack goes, eventually it got unbearable- 60% of the time when practicing there was no sound & it would pop on & off & make horrible fuzzy interference. I took it to a guy to fix who had to take it to bits- who said these amps are notoriously unreliable. Anyway it turned out that there were aprox 15 problems with the amp (all of which were sorted)ranging from a busted input to broken ribbon cables, busted valve plate, a transformer that given time would have burnt through the PCB etc. etc. That cost me ?250 to get fixed and was about 8 hours solid work. BE CAREFUL WHERE YOU BUY THIS AMP.

However since then, this amp has been fine.

Customer Support : 1
Rubbish- you have to wait ages , so you end up going to an independant person (this voids your warranty, but if you have a gig that evening what can you do?)

Overall Rating : 7
Its had its problems, but its still a good amp, it makes you sound different to every other marshall player.

Looks really cool.
Sounds great vintage or modern, likes all pickups i played through it from vintage twangy tele singles, to the powerful humbuckers on the flying V i used for the last recording.
Very heavy so watch out & get the singer to give you a hand moving it.
This is loud enough for ANY situation.
Pretty good value for money when compared to anything else.

If it were stolen Id either get one of these or a Mesa Stilleto.

This amp was made in 1999 I think. It has your basic 4 tone controls two channels clean and dirty with an extra gain switch on the dirty channel which is footswitchable.

Sound Quality : 8
I used this amp mostly for its clean channel. In my opinion the clean on this amp is the best that I have heard. Its warm, and the reverb is the best. It is the perfect amp for someone who plans on using overdrive/ or dist stompboxes and other effects and wants a great clean sound. For this I don't think that it can be beat. I played a lot of shows, many of which I didn't mic. On three the volume is lounder than anyone could ever need, and had plenty of headroom left over.
I used this amp mostly with a les paul and the dirtty channel in my opinion is single coil only. I could never get a good sound from it rather it was a little overdrive to heavy, it just sounded awful, and believe me I spent a lot of time tweaking. I simply couldn't find a single lick, riff, solo or any other use for my les paul using this channel. However I did like the sould of a strat on the dirty channel (single coils of course)
This amp is also very portable compared to lugging a stack around, in fact this was much louder than a 50 watt marshall jcm 900. that I owned.

This is a followup review, I just thought there are some things that people need to consider when looking at this amp that I've discovered in the past year of ownership.

Sound Quality : No Opinion
When I first got this amp I was really impressed with the warmness of the clean channel. But now that I've been using it for a while and have gigged with it several times, I have noticed a few gripes. I primarily use an American Fat Strat Texas Special, so don't think it's the guitar that lacks character when I explain this: The tone is powerful and warm. But no matter how much I jockey with the tone controls, I can't seem to get a whole lot of definition out of this amp at high volumes. Everything turns kinda muddy. The best I can do is turn the treb/mid/bass knobs down to lower settings and engage the bright switch. Then I can get the overall volume up a little louder without everthing becoming blurry. All of this is not problem if you mic your amp and keep the volume restrained...but then what were you thinking buying a 4x10 monster? You could have gotten by with a lounge amp.

It might be that the Tex-Mex pickups on my strat are too high output for the amp. The amp has a lot of power, and when combined with a higher output s/c's, it's possible that this is what is messing up the levels. I've used normal strats on this amp and they have a little bit clearer tone, with more definition. And my Texas Special strat has INCREDIBLE tone on other amps. So it probably is just a matter of too much juice without enough equalizing. Rolling down the guitar's volume knob some helps A LOT. Replacing the tubes with something better than stock would probably fix most of this, but I'm sure there would be other trade-offs involved in doing that.

One of the speakers is starting to fuzz too. High bass levels (which is what happens when you up the volume) cause a lot of unwanted noise. The bass is blurry and overpowering anyway no matter what and that mucks up the tone. Combined with the speaker flaw, it kills off the amp's pleasing characteristics quite quickly.

The drive channels are still incredible...probably the best Fender has ever achieved.

I bought my Fender Deville 410 in November of 2004. Im not sure when it was made. Im just too lazy to look and see. If youve already looked at these amps, then you know the features. If not, then just read some of the reviews below.

The only reason Im giving this category a 9 is the lack of footswitchable reverb and simple tube biasing. But most Fenders dont have that anyways. If you really want reverb versatility, add on a Electro Harmonix holy grail reverb to your setup. (note: the built in reverb does sound really great)

This amp is great by itself, but i would recommend some different pedals such as compression, echo or tremelo to get some different sounds from it.

The sound and power of this amp are enough to fill large auditoriums and theatres (I have several times before) but you may want to mic it for a more dispersed range across the audience.

Sound Quality : 9
I use this amp with my PRS Santana SE. It has some pretty awesome open- coil humbuckers. (read my review on this guitar for more info on it) 99% of the time, im playing hard emo/post punk with a lot of full power chords. Thats where this amp excels in my opinon, which is just blazing away on distorted power chords and riffs.

It suits my needs and my very picky tone requirements flawlessly. The clean tones are full and luscious. The distorted sounds are great too with that awesome tube midrange growl, and sparkling highs. This amp absolutely shimmers with stock distortion. I felt that the sound needed a little more umph and bottom end, so i bought a DOD Death Metal stompbox. It seems like this pedal was meant for this amp. Another review on that pedal and the others I use with this amp (Line 6 Tonecore Constrictor compressor and Echo Park delay, and DOD Supra Distortion and Ice Box chorus) will be added.

If you really want the best rock sound out of this amp, i would recommend a pair of Groove Tube distortion rated 6L6 power tubes as well as

The reason Im giving this amp's sound less than perfect is the slight lack of enough bottom end for me on the drive channel. I would rate the sound at about 9.5

Reliability : No Opinion
This particular model I have had no trouble with so far(even though with its cousin, the deluxe 112, i did. thats why i got this one). It even works well with other power tubes such as a pair of Svetlana 5881's. although since I havent the tools to bias it properly yet, I could use them only for a few minutes.

The Deville is very reliable. This is the only amp i use live. I dont need a backup, even though I am going to buy another one to stack on top of it:). Yes, its that good of an amp.

I havent dealt with Fender directly, just authorized technicians (for another amp) so I cant really say.

Ive been playing for about 6 years, so I know my stuff pretty well. I dont have to worry about it being lost or stolen because I love this amp too much to let either of those happen. I absolutely love this amp. Its the greatest thing thats ever happened to me. The only other amp I would want more than this one would be a Fender Bassman 59 reissue. Because of this amp, I will never buy any other amp than Fender ever again!

I tried this next to some Peavey tube amp when i was about to muy it, and the peavey just sucked compared to this one. You wont find much better quality better than this unless you get a lot more expensive.

First let me say that I have been playing for over 20 years, I am quite the "tonemeister" and I play styles from Jazz to Blues to melodic hard Rock. And the DeVille can cover all of those bases for me. This amp sounds fantastic it is warm with oodles of those sweet tube harmonics and is very touch sensitive. Over the years I have learned alot of tricks to get good sounds out of your tube amp so for those who may not be as fimiliar with tube amps as I am I will share a few of them here.

#1) TUBES TUBES TUBES!!!!!
There is ALOT of variation in sounds between the different brands of tubes out there so you must experiment with different ones and LISTEN to get the sound you want. For me it has always seemed EASIER to get good distorted sounds than a really pleasing authentic clean Jazz tone. For preamp tubes (IMHO) the Electro Harmonix 12AX7EH is one of the best current production 12AX7 tubes availible and I have tried most of what is out there. Some other good 12AX7's are the JJ Teslas, the GTECC83 and GT12ax7M, RUBY 12ax7A and Sovtek 12ax7LPS. Or you can go NOS but the 12AX7EH is working out well for me and they are pretty consistent.

For 6L6 tubes I have settled on the GT6l6C. Many people may not realize that this tube is essentially the same tube as the highly rated Ruby Tubes 6L6GCSTR. They are made in the same factory and althogh there are some minor diferences between them they are VERY similar and sound similar. And they both get an EXCELLENT jazz tone AND SMOOTH overdrive tones. FAT 6L6 midrange great harmonics and the highs are pleasantly restrained not harsh. IMHO if you like to play jazz the two afformentioned tubes are the way to go. Some others.....

SED 6l6 ... Open sound deep bass aggressive and bright top great for SRV type sounds, country, acoustic guitars.
"S" Svetlana 6l6.... fat midrange goodoverdrive not as much bass as SED but more balanced
EH6L6GC...Clean players will really like it good all around tube.
JJTesla.... Good smooth overdrive tones TERRIBLE brittle jazz tone.

Oh yeah< and hardness rating 7 (GT scale) is the most versatile to my ears. Althogh if you only play rock than you could go down much lower say 4, just rember that your amp will break up sooner the lower you go. Keep in mind too low or too high and you begin to loose tone. I bias my DeVille by ear a little hot.

Set up right, the clean tones out of this amp can make you cry tears of joy!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Reliability : 9
I have had this amp about 1 year now and no problems... I have other Fender amps that I have had much longer and in general they are very rliable.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I have a good local amp tech. fenders have a great 5 year warranty if you ever need it.

Overall Rating : 10
I was blessed with an outstanding musical ear and that has helped me in my quest for great tone. I hope this Info will help somebody just remember to experiment and LISTEN. Remember an average guitar through a great amp can sound real good but a $2,500.00 guitar through a crappy amp will still probably sound crappy.

I play various hollow jazz boxes and HSS and HH Fralin equipped Strats through my Deville and play out live. I usually don't use alot of effects but I have...radial tonebone classic distortion,Guyatone cs3 compressor, ibnez cs9 chorus, ibanez fl9 flanger, Buddah wah, line6 delay modeler, holy grail reverb, boss Giga Delay, Boss DS1 with keely mod, Chandler tube overdrive, univibe.

May the force be with you!!!!!!!!!!

Bright switch for the Clean Channel
Spring Reverb
Effects loop
3 12AX7 preamp tubes
2 6L6 output tubes
4x10" speakers
60watt output
2 switch, 3 function footswitch

I believe its a '03 or '04 model. I personally like that there are reletively few nobs, because it is much more easy to operate than say a 3 channel Marshall that has different controls for each channel.

Sound Quality : 8
I play a general mix of styles, but for the most part I play Classic Rock and various styles of Blues. I play a '96 Gibson Les Paul Standard with some type of Seymour Duncan pickup in the bridge (I bought it used and never looked at the pickup model), and I basically plug straight in and use no effects currently.

Ok, I was looking for an all tube amp that had classic tube tone and was plenty loud for gigs. For that this amp does quite nicely. For the most part this amp has been great to me; it does great for some classic rock tones and its very good for early (cleaner) blues tones with a hint of cut such as Albert King and Peter Green (when in Fleetwood Mac), and I am in love with the spring reverb on this unit. If I were to get a new amp, I would want to take the reverb tank off of this amp and use it as a stand-alone reverb unit, becuase it definitely is more lush and resonant than digital imitation.

On the whole the amp has a punchy sound, and is pretty touch sensitive. The Clean channel is basically perfect--it gets plenty loud but stays smooth and clear, and when cranked at about 10 or above it sounds like very smooth and musical distortion drive with plenty of bass, but without actually distorting at all.

The Drive channel I've had some mixed sucess--with my bridge pickup, it sounds very harsh on the treble strings and has the sound of the fuzz of the speaker cone being pushed (similar to the raw sound of Muddy Waters), which doesnt work for me for the most part unless the tone on my guitar is rolled down. That I believe is the fault of the pickup, but I havent really played with any other guitars through it so I dont know for sure. On the neck though it sings--it has a bass heavy sound and the treble strings are very smooth sounding and not harsh at all. With the More Gain on, that harshness on the bridge becomes much harsher, unless the tone is rolled off, and then is usuable. On my neck pickup on More Gain the sound does get a little muddy.

There are only a couple of problems I've had. First, I get some pretty bad feedback when the amp has a decent amount of gain on (say, master volume at around 5 and gain at near 7), which gets much worse with reverb on. It is also more prone to feedback on my neck pickup. This could be a wiring fault on the guitar I believe, so bear with me. I also had one bad incident where I did smell a burning smell when I had switched to More Gain while at my usual maximum setting (vol 4-5, gain 7 as mentioned before). After playing at that setting for like 3-4 minutes in the middle of band practice the smell came, so I turned it off imidiatedly and didnt play it for a couple weeks. I believe I might have blown an output tube, so to be safe I replaced them both and it was working fine again. That could of been caused by the tubes being old being I bought the amp used. Once I replaced them it worked fine, but I am still very cautious not to over heat my tubes now. But the inherent feedback issue is still there. There is also some ringing background noise I believe only on my bridge pickup, which I believe is a wiring problem (it sounds like a 60-cycle hum of a single coil). All of these issues I will have looked at when I get my guitar serviced and my amp checked up, so these problems may just be case specific.

Overall, this amp is pretty versitile, good for classic rock and electric blues, and most likely jazz, punk, surf, and alt-rock as well. Metal not so much. For harder rock (high gain in other words) this might not suit you as well either because the drive is more of the natural distortion of the speakers, but this can be remedied by the effect pedal of your choice. If you are looking for high gain most likely any Fender amp is not your choice because of its open back cabinets, as opposed to the closed back cabs of Marshalls or Mesas and whatnot. This causes a different bass response and relfects the sounds coming from the back of the speaker back outward towar

Reliability : 8
The amp is build pretty solid. I've carried it from practice to practice, and have bumped it against things, and it still plays fine. I believe it is dependable, besides the aformentioned burning smell incident, which I dont really count personally. It certainly is better than my previous amp, my little Dean GA40R, which blew its speaker twice (once at a gig). But be warned, its heavy as hell, and it has no wheels, but I wouldnt put on wheels because I like to sit on my amp when playing sometimes.

I am giving this amp the benefit of the doubt because I believe that the issues I've had with it are most likely caused by my guitar, and also because none of the other reviews have similar problems.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I never had OFFICIAL contact with Fender about the amp problems (I dont have the warrentee for repairs). When I blew the output tube I just went over to the local Sam Ash, bought two new 6L6's, pluged them in and played again. I will look into a full checkup soon.

Overall Rating : 9
I have been playing for little over 2 years (although most people couldnt tell), yet I am very picky about my sounds and I am definitely aleady starting my Tone Search, because I want the sounds people can remember me by. So far I have owned this amp for about 6 months and it more or less suits my needs. For its price (especially the price I paid) it is very useful--you definitely get more bang for your buck here than with the big names like Marshall. If It were lost or stolen, I would replace it for the same price, unless I wanted to get a much more expensive one, such as the Fender Twin Amp or the THD Flexi-50 (which is $1600 just for the head). But most likely I would get this again.

For the most part I did give the benefit of the doubt, because I do believe it is a good product besides my slight misfortunes, which may just be caused by my guitar, and because of its low price but good value. This is a definite improvement in tone over any solid-state amp.

I play a classic rock/jazz style with this amp and my Epiphone dot studio, This amp is PERFECT for the specific sound I want.

The only problem I have is that when I step on the foot switch to switch from clean to distortion it makes a loud pop(this only happens when I step on the switch, if I switch it from the amp itself by pushing the button, that doesnt happen.), I don't know if its just mine or if thats what they do. It isn't that much of a problem since I have another distortion pedal, but for the people who don't it might be an issue?

Other then that, this amp has everything I will ever need. I LOVE IT.

Sound Quality : 10
Like I said, I am using an Epiphone Dot Studio with this amp, and it has a great classic rock/jazz sound. So it fits my music style very well. There is no bad feed back like most amps, I can crank this and theres next to no sound unless I'm playing the guitar. The clean channel NEVER gets distorted. The default distortion is pretty good compared to most amps with built in distortion.

Reliability : 9
I havent had it very long, but I feel this amp is very reliable since It shows no sign of breaking. I was told the amp never broke down when I bought it from Guitar Center in Manchester, Connecticut.

What I really wanted was the 2X12 version, (thinking that the 2 12s would provide a better bass response), but this amp was available used at such good price. Been playing it for about 1 year now.

This is my first time play an electric guitar in about 10 years. This is the loudest 60 watts I have ever heard!! At first the sound was a little on the thin side to me. The distortion sounded like, as one review put it - a bumble bee in a can. I was actually looking around for another amp. But, that was then and this is now. Til recently my only electric ax was a DeArmond Starfire Special with a pair of single coil p-ups. I picked up a Guild Blues Bird with humbuckers used. The sound difference with this amp was astonishing! The sound was just what I wanted, sweet, clear, clean and fat. The different guitar/pickups completely changed this amps attitude. Its far more responsive to the way the string is plucked - I use either my thumb or a heavy pick. The distortion is so much better - gone is the bumble bee in a can sound. And the bass response with these 4 10s is very deep and full. I don't use much reverb, so for me its great.

Ok, for you guys with lots of electric guitar experience maybe this in not news, but it is to me. Being a converted acoustic snob, I use to think electrics had no response but noise. Man, was I ever ign?ant!

Lots of full, clean, balanced sound; great bass, great highs, don't hear any tonal break up or smudging of the scales. The distortion and reverb are good. One recommendation anyone who currenly owns or plans to purchase one is to get a passive volume control that controls JUST the volume and put this last in the effects loop, whoa! you can crank up the amp where the tubes are nice and hot and take the volume down to a bearable level and play all day without hearing damage!

Very Sweet!!

What a GREAT AMP. For those of you who complain about the tones in this amp, GET AN EAR or learn how to dial it in. Get rid of all the stomp boxes that kill the tone and create noises. Dial the amp in, then apply your effects. With this amp you shold be able to achieve any tone you want.

I use this amp for every guitar. I have a Roger McGuinn 12 String Rickenbacker. An American Standard Telecaster, Fender Strat with vintage noisless pickups that in installed. A Les Paul. All guitars have their own flavor and with a little tweeking on the onboard EQ you can get whatever tones you want. From the twangy Rickenbacker to the warm Les Paul, its all in your fingers anyway. i dont need a wall of amps to do the job, this ONE does it all. Start slow. Also try to put the amp high on a stand or low. try different angles you will be surprised of what this amp can do. I wouldnt trade it for anything.

Reliability : 10
I bought this amp the week it was released in 1996. I have replaced the tubes once with MESA tubes and wasnt happy with the tone. I purchased original mfgr fender tubs and was happy again. I only replaced the tubes because i broke one when i put the foot pedal away, other than that i would still have the original tubes in it. The amp has fallen, its benn left in the cold in below zoro weather in Illinois and Indiana. Slid around in trunks of cars, in the back of vans and trucks and flew forward crushing my cars dashboard on the way to the gig and still performed. The best amp ever regardless of price. Get one if you can.

I have been playing guitar fo 20+ years. I have had several amps and guitars. I was always looking for differnet amps and couldnt getit right. I stopped looking after i bought my Hot Rod DeVille 4X10. If you cant find the right tone in this amp, it may be your guitar or experience. No Offence. It takes time to play well and to learn to work wiht your equiptment. You have be have a chemisry with your gear as well as your band-mates. Try hot rodding your Strat or Tele to get fuller tones. E_mail me and I provide you with the way to do it and convert a regular 5-way strat switch to a 7 way with the same switch. Changing the capistors on the pot's may improve your guitar. But believe me when i say this amp can do it all, because it can....Rock On.

right now my band is in the studio recording and im using a couple of guitars with this amp. a 1977 lp deluxe, a 1976 telecster deluxe and an american tele. but when im at home or rehearsing i use an epiphone lp. my favorite is the deluxe. with the deluxe plugged in and the clean channel cranked (to do this we had to cover the amp with blankets, pillows etc... and put it in a room with 4 5 inch doors between the amp and us, so we wouldnt suffer permanent ear damage) you get a really nice marshally crunch. with the distortion channels you can get social d type lead sounds and the same crunch as the clean (at a much lower volume) you can also get some high gain distortion but that isnt really my thing.

First of all, I dont know why metal heads bother buying this amp and then come complaining on here. It is not a metal amp at all. This amp has a beautiful clean channel. Its a versitile channel too... It can be thick and rich and can also be clear and bright. I usually use the overdrive channel when I play. People whine about this channel being weak but its great. I dont have to rely on huge amounts of distortion pedals to create the dynamic. I can rely on my playing to get the sound I want. The softer the strings are hit the cleaner the channel becomes but the harder they are hit the more overdriven it becomes. I find that having the gain on no more than 2 - 3 is sufficient and the actual guitar being played is coming through the speakers really clearly. It doesnt just break up into a huge mess of distorion and fuzz. Moving onto power. This thing is a beast. It drowns out my drummer (who is quite heavy handed) and bass player when it is turned up past 6.

Before I bought this amp I spent a few months researching amps and trying different brands. This amp was by far the best I tried (the only thing that compared was an Orange 50watt head). It is an amazing amp and I highly recommend it. If it were stolen I would be devasted and I would most definately get another. I would have 2 if I had the money.

As noted before - onboard reverb tank, comes with a channel switching footswitch. Pretty standard and sufficient. Most amps are good for one thing. This does most pretty well. I have the upgraded tweed version of the amp with Jensen speakers and a couple of other things. The Jensens versus the eminence speakers are huge. The distortion is great for a fender. If you want savage distortion - get a pedal. I am totally happy with the distortion and I have actually done away with my distortion pedals. Fat, full thick with fantastic sustain - even with single coils.

BTW: I am playing a 2003 Tele Highway 1 - single coil pickups.

Sound Quality : 10
The clean channel is unmatched. Vintage Fender. Beatiful reverb. The more drive/gain channel is F***ING LOUD. Knock your socks off, wear some earplugs - loud . If dial in more gain - it'll get pretty savage. It all depends on what sounds you want to achieve. I find it to be incredibly versitile. I would not call this a "metal" amp. It is good for pretty well everything else.

Reliability : No Opinion
Brand new - it hasn't let me down yet, but the first full jam I had with it at half volume, it smelled like something was burning. Stopped, inspected and nothing looked on fire. It has been great since.

Incredible amp. It is really probably too loud for apartments. I have only one neighbour above me that plays the guitar too and doesn't mind the guitar being play at respectable levels. I have it set at 1 (out of 12) on the dial and this is probably the max I would play for the neighbours. I love the overdriven sound on this thing. So creamy and authentic. I think, after years of playing, trying and reading about other amps - that this is the best for the price. If it were more expesive, it would still be a great deal.

I nearly got a black-faced Super Reverb, but at the last second decided to get this and I haven't looked back since. What an amp! I can't comment on the regular Hot Rods, but this thing is great.

Mine is a late '90s USA-made amplifier. I bought it because I've always admired the crystal clear tone and voice of Fender amplifiers, and wanted an alternative sound to the Marshall 6100/Mesa cab set I usually use.
I generally play my own stuff so it's hard to qualify except that it's generally clean to moderately distorted rock, sometimes with a surf/funky twist.
This amp has basically 2 and a half channels. A clean channel and a dual mode distortion channel (kind of crunch/distortion), all of which you can switch between with a foot pedal, or manually. It's got an effects loop and two inputs (one for regular guitars, and one for toning down high-input active instruments). And of course that fine Fender reverb...

Sound Quality : 8
I use all kinds of guitars with this. The mail ones are a down-tuned Gibson Marauder, and Fender Coronado, Starcaster, and Jaguar. All of them sounded pretty good, and the amplifier is surprisingly low-noise. But I felt that the 10" speakers sounded a little thin, and lacked much bottom-end definition, so I turned to Harmony Central for some advice.
This is what I did: I replaced the speakers with Reverend All-Tone 10"s, re-tubed with EH tubes, and switched the first per-amp tube from 12AX7 to 12AY7 (old school Fender style).
This made a WORLD of difference! Now the amp sounds rich and full and the tone is incredible. I've got to go play it for a sec...

Ok I'm back. Yeah it sounds nice.
The distortion is OK for blues crunch, but it seems pretty muddy. THe real downside to this channel is that it has no independent tone controls but uses the same ones as the clean channel does. So unless you are going to use one channel for one song, then adjust your settings and switch to the second channel for another song, it's kind of limited what sound you can get. To be fair, I really haven't used this channel much because I prefer to stick to my Marshall for this.
Oh, and this amp is LOUD. yes it is.
This rating is an average between before and after modifications.

I haven't had it for too long, but it seems pretty reliable and from what I've heard it is...

After the changes I've made, I love it.
It's got a great crystal clear rich resonant tone to it (I also run it though a 4x12 cab with celestions which add a lot of bass), sounds great with all my vintage instruments, and if you add a nice overdrive pedal, it's complete.

2002 model -- bought new for $650 as a blem model from MF -- I'm still trying to find the blem! Incredibly versatile for everything but the heaviest distortions. Amazingly warm and full clean channel. I'd love to see some sort of emulated line out for quick recording -- but that's mostly laziness as putting a mic on the amp is probably best. Other features have been discussed.

Sound Quality : 10
Mostly use a G&L F-100 -- two humbuckers with coil tap, phase switches so a wide range of tonal options. All sound great with this amp. Music is a variety -- 20s swing jazz to contemporary rock -- handles wide range very, very well. Very dynamic amp as well. Distortion channel is decent blues breakup -- not thrilled with distortions but they are usable. Clean channel alone warrants the rating...

Reliability : 9
No problems in two years (one preamp tube went bad but that is pretty minor -- did have a bit of cabinet rattle after a few months -- just tightened everything down and it has been fine since.

I can't imagine not replacing it given the cost -- to get this sound in another package with probably cost $1000 more...a great amp, reasonably portable, big sound without having to be too loud. It's a great value!

Here's the real deal:

Use a treble booster. Especially for the distortion. I got Scott's Crispy Creme (treblebooster.com I think) and man, if the amp was a 5 before, now it's a 10. Play a Fender Big Apple Strat thru it and it becomes so punchy, I can now hear what I heard at Scott's site (has many audio clips). I have a heavenly blues sound and a kick ass rock/metal sound. I also have two Bogners and two Marshalls and the Hot Rod DeVille is a keeper.

Would get another in a heartbeat.

Haven't dealt with Fender yet but I'm sure they have top class customer service.

Don't get me wrong, this isn't a plu for Scott - probably any Grade A treble booster will work. Remember, these boxes are anywhere from $150-300 but well worth the money. Try one and you'll see. I've played in my past infront of 10 people and 400,000, had signed bands, did the whole rock & roll cha-cha, TV too. Amp-wise, I've had 'em all. This amp is great especially when some minor tweaking. Great value for the money.
People that give it a poor rating haven't, or don't know how to, place it in the audio chain. Ya gotta have a decent ax and a treble booster and you'll be smiling alot :)

HR Deville made in 2004, this amp is assembled in Mexico. It has 2 real channels. The third so called channel is basically a drive booster. One EQ control (Treble, Mid, Bass) that shapes both channels. Presence knob, Bright/Normal switch, reverb. Comes with footswitch and dust cover(nice perk). I wish the EQ were independant on both channels. This is a 5 tube Amp (3 12AX7 and 2 GT 6L6). I use this amp in a band in usually small venues. It's plenty loud. No need to crank more than half.

Sound Quality : 9
I'm using the amp with a Fender strat deluxe (american) with lace sensor pickups and a Godin XTSA with 2 humbuckers and a middle single coil. I play 70/80's rock, Blues and pop. For the styles of music I play this amp sounds great. The clean sound with my Strat is very good. It's Fender clean. The distortion is also excellent, it's no metal zone but enough for what I need. The sound with the Godin is a little louder and hotter with the distortion on, but the strat beats the Godin on clean. Evidently if you need a very intense distortion this is NOT the amp for you but it sings on bluesy riffs and croons on clean rhythms. Because of the four 10 inch speakers it lacks a little low end compared to 12?s but it?s punchy enough for most people including me and I find that the sound cuts through the rest of the instruments very well.

Been Playing 32 years. I own a lot of other gear. In the past I've owned Twin's (70's) Super reverbs (70's), Marshall's (80's) Crates, Peavey's and no name brands of amplifiers. If it were lost or stolen I'd probably get another one. If I had unlimited funds I'd get another Twin reverb (maybe). This amp does what it was meant to do, superb clean tone and good bluesy distortion at a decent price for a tube amp. It's no Marshall in the distortion department but if you look at the label it reads "FENDER". I compared to Marshall AVT, Peavey classic and Fender HR Deluxe. No contest. I also compared this to other more high end Fender amps (Twin, Vibro). Yeah well, you go with what makes you happy at a price you can afford. I'm happy.

My example was built sometime in the late 1990's. Fender says it features 3 channels, but to be realistic, two is probably more accurate. All tube pre and power amp, solid state rectifier and reverb. Four Fender designed 10" speakers. 60 watts Effects loop. Standby switch, on/off and jewel light. Presense control, along with the usual bass, mid and treble. Around 60lbs, it's kinda heavy, but for these tones it's worth it.

Sound Quality : 8
I tend to stay in the Fender camp with my guitars. My #1 is a Japan made mid 80's Squier Stratocaster currently loaded with Fender Vintage Noiseless pickups. #2 is a recent issue Squier Standard Telecaster (all stock), and #3 is an Ibanez Artcore AFS75T. My style of music is blues-rock in the vein of SRV, John Mayer, etc. The clean channel is to die for with this amp. It has a nice snappy attack, courtesy of the solid state rectifier...I'm not a huge fan of classic Fender tube rectifier "sag" as I feel like I'm trying to play my way through quicksand on those types of amps. I set the drive channel up in such a way that it sound similar to the clean channel but gives it a nice break-up....not like a Tube Screamer..they tend to rob the amp of it's sparkle, IMHO. This breakup is much more pleasing to my ears and doesn't rob the amp of it's character. I don't use the more drive "channel" at all...not my cup of tea.

The Squier Telecaster sounds great though it, also...but I have yet to find a setting that I find the Artcore pleasing through it. It sounds good, but I used some slap-back echo on my J-Station with the Artcore, so I may have to find a delay box of some sort soon.

It's Fender. Depending on who you ask, they're either the friendly company that always answers questions and fixes your amp with a smile at the right price, or they're the evil corporate menace spawned from Satan himself, who takes your cash and you never hear from them again. HA HA HA HA HA HA cough... Your mileage may vary. I'm well out of waranty, so if anything break I'm on my own.

I've been playing for 24 years...man, I'm getting old.

The last few years I've been in the digital modeling camp (and quite happy with it), but I've always had to live with the shortcomings of digital (and analog) modeling. After the Behringer fiasco, I spent a lot of time trying out amps trying to find just the one I wanted. I just recently bought two Behringer GMX110s that were both returned (defective). I also played a Crate V1512, Tech21 Trademark 10, and a Vox ADV30something (digital modeling amp)...none really hit the sounds I was looking for. Unfortunately, my Johnson J-Station appears to be dead, so I don't know what I'm going to use for recording now..I'll probably have to learn to mic the amp, because I don't think I can go back to digital. I love the amp's tone...it gets those bluesy sounds I've been hearing in my head. I hate it's heavy weight...but if I get the tone I want, I'll carry around a boulder if that's what it takes. I also find the "more drive channel" useless.

Features : 7
2002 Hotrod DeVille 410
3 channels
60w Tube power
120w Speaker power
4 - 10" Eminence 30w speakers
2-button foot-switch

What brings this down: Spring reverb and no effects. But I guess it is still everything you need (or would want) in a blues/vintage amp.

Sound Quality : 10
First of all, let me say this thing is a BEAST. When I was shopping for a new tube amp, I was stuck between two: The '65 Twin Reverb reissue, and the Pro-Tube Twin. I wound up with the DeVille. I didn't think 60w would be enough, but man was I ever wrong. The four 10-inchers crank out a lot of sound, and 60w is more than enough to give this amp incredibly powerful tone.

Sound quality. I play mainly a '03 American Fat Strat (H/S/S). It doesn't matter if you like humbuckers or single-coils, this amp sounds amazing. It doesn't have the crystal clear, bell-like clean channel of a Twin, but that can also be a good thing. In some resepects it sounds a little warmer, and even a little "liquidy." Definition in the high end is incredible, though the low-end growl is not quite what it is with 12-inchers. If you tweak the bass control enough, you can probably find what your looking for. You could always use extension speakers for this as well (though I wouldn't reccomend it unless you're playing a VERY big gig un-miked). The "Drive" channel is not what it is other amps, like say, Marshalls, but it is quite good for Fender. I would reccomend the "More Drive" channel for any heavy work, which more than beats any Marshall I've played. The overdrive on this amp is superb for classic rock, and lighter varieties of heavy rock (if there is such a thing). You won't get a thrashing sound from this amp (stick to Mesa for that) because no matter how much drive and presence you throw into this thing, and no matter how loud and bold it gets, it stays incredibly even, and "juicy" (think Hendrix). I've never heard another overdrive quite like it. The normal "Drive" channel is great for lighter classic rock, like Creedence Clearwater and such. The "More Drive" can get heavy enough for some Ozzy, like Crazy Train.

CLEAN HEADROOM: It's got tons. The amp has such warm, powerful tone, that it's hard to tell where, exactly, it begins to break up, but I'd like to say somewhere between 8.5 and 9.5. (Keep in mind all controls on this amp go to 12, not 10). When it does break up, it's not pretty (because the volume is so freakin' loud!). If you want natural overdrive, stick with the HotRod Deluxe or Blues Jr.

Given the music I play, this amp is a Godsend. 10 all the way.

Reliability : 10
He're where y'all are really going to be impressed. I've had this thing for 4 months (the guy I bought it from had it 6 months before that) and this thing is still in perfect condition. But here's what's so impressive:

Last week I was gigging at a medium-sized concert hall, and we loaded up all our gear. Drums and base amps went in my SUV, but I didn't have room for the DeVille and my guitar. So I put them in the cabin of my pickup truck and had another band member drive it. I get to the place we're playing and the guy with my truck doesn't ever show up. We unload and I go back to look for him. It ends up that he hit an animal, lost control, and ROLLED the truck doing about 50 on a gravel road, and landed in the ditch. The guy was fine, nothing more than a bump on the head (caused by the amp, which weighs a good 65 lbs.), but the truck was totaled. The wrecker came and got the truck, and I got the amp and put it in my car. It appeared to be in one piece, but I was sure it was mangle inside. I was planning on having to borrow somebody else's rig. But lo and behold, we get there, I plug in my amp, and.... IT PLAYS PERFECTLY. I'm seriously thinking about writing a letter to Fender to let them know what a great job they're doing as far as durability.

Never had to deal with them, and I hope I never do.

I've been playing seriously for a number of years now. I've owned a lot of (exensive) gear. This thing is incredibly, and for the price unbelievable. I was prepared to bite $1200 and buy a Pro-Tube Twin, but then I played a DeVille in the store and found out it sounded every bit as good. I deciede to sleep on the decision, but before I could go back to buy it, I found a private seller, checked out the amp and offered him $500 and had myself the love, uh, I mean the amp of my life. This was destiny. If it were stollen, I'd gladly shell out the $800 for a new one. It is more than worth the price. The only thing I wish it had was tube reverb, but hey, nothing's perfect (though this amp comes damn close).

This is an updated review. My amp is actually a '97 model. I've added a MXR 10 band EQ in the loop, (which made an incredible difference), and new speakers and tubes. The EQ is so key, and makes this amp 100% more flexible.

Sound Quality : 9
I've installed new preamp tubes, two new GT 12AX7 Mullards, and a EH 12AY7. The 12AY7 in the first position made a great improvement to overall tone. Much smoother, clearer, and more defined on channel 1. Channel 2/3 is WAY better with this tube too, but still a little too grainy and flabby for me in comparison to using the TS-9. The 12AX7 Mullards improved all around tone even further. Rounder, and smoother. Not as big of a difference as the 12AY7 swap though. I've got a dual rectifier kit that will be installed soon, and an adjustable bias kit, along with new "softer" GT 6L6's. I've also got some Yellow Jackets on the way to experiment with the Class A, EL84 sound.

I also installed 4 new Jensen P10R's. These speakers sound GREAT in this amp for the money. Speakerrepair.com has 4 for $196. They are much more touch sensitive and offer far more definition than the stockers ever did. They do give up some headroom and high level tightness, but the cutting vintage tone they produce is worth it. The bass isn't quite as impressive, but the mids and highs are far superior. The low end is much more clear and defined though. Just not as big. I did have to grind on one of the top ones to get it to fit behind the chassis, but not much.

Along with the new tubes and speakers, I've aquired a new Earcandy ported 1x12 speaker cabinet loaded with a Weber 12V 60w AlNiCo speaker. This cab sounds awesome powered by the Deville! Either by it's self, or together with the four 10's. With all the speakers goin' the tone is big, full, woody, creamy, and just plain sweet. Very complex with tons of sustain, and generally wonderful all around. Run just the cab and it's more controled, with tight punchy bass and more defined highs and mids. Without the cab there's a definite drop off in low and midrange fullness, and the creamyness goes away, replaced with a more cutting, biting tone.

Reliability : 10
The stock tubes have lasted 7 years. 5 years of hard gigging. The power tubes haven't been replaced yet.

Customer Support : No Opinion

Overall Rating : 8
$600-700 in upgrades now. Most definitely worth it though.

Probably made in 2003. This amp is the best amp I've ever owned, and it is capable of playing jazz, funk, r&b, blues, and hard rock --- it does play metal, but to get that sound I have to adjust the tone controls (bass, mid, treble, presence) and play my Soldano Super Charger all tube pedal through it. This all tube amplifier is extraordinarily loud, but I do also have an Mesa Boogie 2X12 Extension Cabinet with Celestion Vintage 30s playing with 4X10 Eminence Speakers that are in the combo. Excellent at playing clean, playing with overdrive is awesome --- it is not trying to simulate or emulate another great amp, it is a grand classic that other amps will soon try to copy --- warm, responsive to pick attack, melodic!

Sound Quality : 10
I usually play my Gibson Les Paul through it, and the amp with this guitar is beyond adequate description . . . it allows you to cry out the deep songs of the heart. The clean channel is exceptional. The overdrive and extra overdrive channel, sounds better than Marshall but not as chunky with palm mutes; compared to Mesa Boogie, it depends upon which amp but I think that for the money it beats Mesa Boogie hands down (although I love the sound of the Mark IV, but costs like two and half times more). The only thing that I must say that I think the amp sounded better with an extension cabinet with 12 inch speakers. I bought an oversized, heavy (75 lbs) Mesa Boogie Rectifer Cabinet with (2) twelve inch Celestion Vintage 30s which added even more warmth to my sound. So the 60 watt all tube amp is driving six speakers total: 4 ten inch speakers, and 2 twelve inch speakers --- I have the best of both worlds. With the Mesa Boogie Extension Cabinet, it should actually be rated a 10 ++ or 12

Reliability : No Opinion
This is the second Fender Deville I have had. The first one was played a lot at Guitar Center and within a month of taking it home, it had a strange buzz and didn't sound as well. So Guitar Center allowed me to return and exchange the combo --- there really wasn't a better sounding amp in my opinion for the money, and based on what I have read on the reliability of fender amps and their long history of building quality amps, I was willing to take the chance on getting another 4X10 Deville

Customer Support : No Opinion
don't know, five years I think.

Overall Rating : 10
I'd have to go out and get me the same set up as I have now. Or get the Mesa Boogie Mark IV (although the amp sounds great, I would still have to invest in additional cabinets because it comes only with a single twelve inch Celestion speaker). -- gets expensive

A 1998 version, black tolex. I play all styles of music except jazz, but I'm sure it could do that as well! All the controls are responsive giving proper control of sound unlike a Marshall DSL2000 401 I used to have. The power is unbelievable! I have it on 3 at practices and everyone else is maxed!

The clean sound is the best I have ever heard except for a Bad Cat #1600+. It's perfect for putting effects on top of, i.e. a EHX Small Clone. The drive channels are great as well, except you have to find the right settings.

1999 or 2000 model.
Standard features, (really only two channels).
I play Blues, Jazz, and some Hendrix type rock in a performing three-piece band and this amp is pretty good at covering all the bases.
I really wish it had seperate EQ controls for both channels. As it is, you can't really optimize it for either one if you plan to use both. However, the overdrive channel sounds pretty bad to me all around, so I always use a TS-9 with the clean channel, and avoid channel 2/3 altogether.

Sound Quality : 6
LOUD!!!
Overall, the sound quality is a bit lacking for me. The clean channel is a solid 7, but it has a kinda thin, uninteresting tone. The overdrive channel 2/3 is just intollerable, for me. I'm about to replace the speakers and do some internal work though, so we'll see how that goes.
I use an '04 Am. Deluxe Fat Strat, a '96 Lonestar Strat, and a '67 Tele with a custom Rosewood Curbow neck. All have stock pickups and all sound pretty good through the Deville. The Deluxe FS is huge and FAT sounding in comparison to the other two, (whaddayaknow). Giving the Deville a chance to show off it's low end prowess with big, thumping, tight bass, but the Tele's vintage tone is just so sweet despite it's peircing high end... The Lonestar sounds like it's supposed to, a little more raw than the Am standard with more bite. Not as refined or versitile as the FS, but more so than the Tele. Using the TS-9, you can adjust the gain and get some nice smooth overdrive sounds from a slight break up to high gain super sustain. Not a great deal of tonal variation. It's not a one trick pony, but it ain't far away either. It does respond well to the Fender guitars though.

Reliability : 10
I've gigged with this amp for almost 5 years now, and it's been rock solid. (knock on wood...) Usually I don't take a back up. It's never even been serviced.

Customer Support : No Opinion

I've been plaing for 10 years. I'm a full time musician and guitar instructor now. I've owned Marshall and Crate stacks, Deluxe Reverbs, Princeton Reverbs, and many other amps. The Deville is a great amp for the money, but can't stand with the big boys.

I would but another at the same price if I had the chance. It's been worth every penny.

I hate the weight. It's a boat anchor!

I'm not sure about the year of this amp, but I just got it, so I believe it's 2004. I find that this amp is pretty versatile, but it is mostly for classic oriented players, meaning guys who are into blues or Zeppelin kind of rock. It pulls off AC/DC kind of hard rock pretty well too. I've found with an Analog Man modded SD-1 it gets a killer Slash-esque lead tone. Super compatible with pedals. It is NOT for heavy metal though. You can pull off Priest type stuff, but if you're into nu-metal or any kind of heavy, heavy metal kind of stuff (think Mayhem) or punk rock, you will not enjoy this amp. It is a very loud 60 watts, also. It is all tube, so it's pretty blistering. It has a shared EQ for all channels which at times I love and at times I hate. It also has an effects loop, but not one I'm very fond of. I give it an 8 because of the wide palette of rock and roll and blues tones.

Sound Quality : 10
I am currently using a Kramer Striker Custom FR 422-CM and a Fender Srratocaster in my rig, and the amp compliments both. The Kramer gets the bitchin rhythm crunch and a smooth lead tone that cuts right through. The Strat makes the clean channel absolutely heavenly, anything from tinny to a dense, watery, soulful blues tone. The cleans don't really break up, which is my kind of thing. I haven't found that it's overwhelmingly noisy, but when you crank the gain, it obviously gets a little buzz. The distortion is not what I would call "brutal," but it is definitely solid. At first I did not like it one bit. I thought it was too "farty." The more I messed with the tone, though, the more it grew on me. It's an amp that people who don't know what they're doing tonally will HATE. Another thing is the gain is pretty solid at lower volumes, but absolutely rips when you crank it. It just gets really full all of a sudden (think of a really overdriven Plexi vibe.) Again, it works extremely well with pedals.

Reliability : No Opinion
I haven't had it long enough to give a fair review yet, but if it breaks down, you'll be hearing from me again.

I've been playing for two years, but I live and breathe music, practicing around 7 hours a day. I often go to guitar shops just to get a feel for some amps and I've got to say that this is the best deal I have personally ever seen on this kind of amp. If it were stolen or lost I would most likely purchase another. It has that sound I'm looking for, and it's got a ton of power.

for the money you put into this you get excellent versatility. i play in a couple bands. i've played this amp with my jazz groups at school (yeah im in college). i use it at church and in two other bands (alt rock and electric syphony type stuff (ie sigur ros+radiohead+aqualung+kent). the clean channel is great. very clear and bright, but really you can make it what ever you want. i use the drive channel a lot (tube distortion all the way) but not the "more drive" too much. the way i have it set it gets pretty washy and yet really bitey and chincy. i havent found a setting i like for it yet. and i dont really have much use for it anyways. i love the reverb (i wish it was on the footswitch though). the footswitch uses a standard 1/4" cable (so do yourself a favor and get one that reaches as long as the rest of you effects)and switches between channels and activates the more drive(again bummer that reverb isnt on it too. its a pain to have to walk back to the amp to adjust, especially when you stand 20 feet away and you guitar cable to your effects is only 10, bummer). it has the pre-amp in and out (but i dont use it). 60 watts out of the tubes into 4 10s running 8 or 4 ohms is a lot. i cant turn it up past 3(out of 12, all knobs go to 12) in most settings (jazz & church). i record with it at 4 with it in another room. the loudest ive ever been able to stand was at 5.5 in a huge hall. too loud but it sounds so good. let those tubes sing baby.

Sound Quality : 8
right now im running a fender nashville power tele (with standard tele brigde and neck pu's plus a texas special strat pu in the middle position and fender/fishman piezo bridge)into my effects(eb volume pedal--boss tu-2--ibanez ts-9 tube screamer--line6 dl4. also the footswitch sits there too but is seperate form the chain)and then into the deville.
also im getting a gretsch g6118 soon (ive played one at guitar center in a deville 410 they had there) the word sweet comes to mind. and ive played with other effects with it too (line 6 filter modeler, holy grail reverb, a vox wah, ebow)all of those are on my wishlist.

i can get any sound i want out of this amp. super smooth cleans for jazz and otherwise and great rolling overdrive into distortion for my other such needs. i havent turned it up to the point of the clean channel breaking up (obviously it does when i hit the ts-9) but tubes are rated pretty high (i think theyre 6s or 8s).

i use lots of reverb (which is why i want it on the footswitch)
so much so that im goin to buy the ehx holier grail because i need it to be footswitchable.

my tele hums a lot when just one of the pickups in on, thusly the amp hums but never out of control.

again you can get almost any sound youd want out of a fender amp with this amp. its no vox ac30 (but i dont want to haul around 80lbs of amp anyways. my buddy's got one and it sounds unbelieveable but it takes two people to move it anywhere, and who is going to shell out $1800 for one of these. my buddy got his for $500 from some rich kid who quit playing. if only he knew what he had.)
dont get me wrong voxs are awesome but my deville costed me almost a quarter of a new ac30 and weighs almost half as much.

it has a great drive channel but the more drive is almost unusable if cant run back and forth to the amp to re-eq. i havent found a setting where all "3" channels sound good. the clean and drive sound great at the same settings but the more drive(being redundant i know, sorry) is almost useless without a seperate eq.

Reliability : 8
so far ive had no problems since getting it. i got it off of ebay. ups smashed a corner but that hasnt effected the tone or otherwise.
i going to get some new tubes soon to have to replace when the time comes. right now im gigging without a back up only because im a poor college student/musician. as soon as i can i will buy another two or six and probably a few ac30s, several guitars (around 25 or so) and ill have roadies and groupies and... <drool>

great amp so far. no problems yet. <knock on wood>

Customer Support : No Opinion
since i got this second hand and the warranty is over with anyways id take it to a friend who knows what hes doing to service it. ive never dealt with fender personally.

ive been playing for 7 or so years. in and out of bands. different guitars and effects and amps. this one is a keeper. i will eventually own two (or six). i had a line 6 flextone iixL. p.o.s. sold it and used the money to get the deville. if it was stolen... id get another one (or six). theyre so cheap in comparison to what else i want (vox ac30, matchless dc-30, or anything orange). i love the tone that i get out it, its light in comparison to other amps in its class, it looks great. the only thing id like added to it was seperate eqs for each channel and a reverb switch included on the footswitch.

this one sounds better than the 2x12. the four tens just have more guts to em. more punch, better tone (and theyre 5 lbs lighter).

If you got the cash, want a perfect clean sounding, full sounding, delicious amp...look no further.

The ONLY downside to this is that it's FUCKING HEAVY. To get a good tone you gotta pay your dues and this means carrying this fucker to gigs and rehearsal. I live in a flat 2 stories up and carrying this thing to practice every Saturday...well, it hurts man. But the tone is so lovely that it's worth the pain and anguish. It's also can be very loud without distorting, acheiving those clean tones while keeping the drummer in the back.

I play two main guitars a 74 Gibson Les Paul Standard and an American Strat and I have to say this amp makes both my guitars sing. I can plug straight into this baby and get the best clean sound you could ever want as well as beautiful singing bluesy tones from the dirty channel. The so called third channel (More Drive Channel) is not the greatest. The reverb sounds beautiful on this amp. I love to take the clean channel and use some pedels with it like an Ibanez tube screamer and a wha wha pedel. With just a few pedels and this amp I can play anything from Pat Metheny to King Crimson.I love this amp.

The Fender Hotrod Deville 4x10 sounds superior to the 2x12 model
Give a listen and compare for yourself.

Only pit falls I see with this amp is that there should be a seperate EQ for each channel and the footswitch is a bit noisy when changing channels but this amp is so versatile with just a few pedels that hardly matters. (Would also love to see this with a tube reverb.)

Volume control for Clean channel
Drive and Master controls for Drive channel
Bass, Mid, Treble, Reverb, and Presence controls for both channels Bright switch and effects loop
Power and standby switches
Footswitch and cover

Features Rating: About an 8. Pretty standard features for a Fender amp, with some bonus for the channel switching. A few extra features like tremolo would be cool. I REALLY wish that it had separate Bass, Mid, and Treble controls for each channel!

Sound Quality : 7
I play a G&L ASAT and a G&L S-500 through a Rocktron VooDu Valve into the Fender. The clean channel is AWESOME! Great clean tone and good reverb. It doesn't quite have the sparkle of an old point-on-point wired Twin Reverb or anything like that. But it's pretty close for a modern circuit-board amp of this price. You could pay a lot more and not sound this good.

The drive channel is OK. It always seemed harsh to me, even with excellent Svetlana tubes. The other problem is the tone settings between the two channels. The clean channel sounds best with plenty of bass and treble, but few mids. However, the drive channel sounds best with plenty of mids and highs, but very little bass. The drive channel gets really muddy if the bass is turned up. So channel switching requires tweaking the EQ, and that's a real pain in the butt! Separate EQ controls for each channel would solve this problem!

In the end, I used the clean channel all the time and used my VooDu Valve for gain and lead tones. I play clean most of the time anyway. Rock and blues with a little country and jazz too.

This amp is NOT for metal! At least, not by itself. You could put pedals or a processor in front of it, like I do. Then you can get as much gain as you want. But it just won't be the same as a "Marshall on 10" or whatever high-gain amp you may like.

This amp WILL SING when turned up loud. The clean channel stays clean for a long time, but when really cranked, it gives a SMOKIN' BLUES TONE. However, you really have to turn it up to get it to overdrive. And there are very few venues where you can turn up that loud without drowning out everyone else in your band.

Sounds Rating: If a vintage Twin Reverb is a 10, then the clean channel on this amp is a solid 9!. But I give only a 5 for the drive channel, which is just too harsh. Overall about a 7. If clean is what you want, then get this amp. If dirty is what you want, look elsewhere, or either use a pedal or processor for gain here.

Reliability : 9
Absolutely dependable. I always played without a backup. It has taken a few bumps, but has never had a serious problem. I have re-tubed it about every 2 years since '99.

Only 2 issues since I have owned it. One of the reverb wires in the back of the amp came loose once. This happened after driving to a gig down a bumpy dirt road with the amp in the backseat of my car. This caused a screeching sound when the reverb was turned up. A quick re-soldering of the wire to the circuit board fixed this problem. The other problem is that one of the input jacks became loose on the circuit board after a few years. Again, a re-solder job fixed the problem.

Reliability Rating: A 10 for the outside, which is nearly indestructible. An 8 for the inside, where the soldering on the circuit board may be fragile in a few places. But that is easily fixed. Overall a 9.

I've never dealt with the Fender company. I do all my own repair and maintenance. No opinion there. However, I do like that you can go to fender.com and download manuals and schematics.

Overall Rating : 8
Overall, I give this amp an 8. It's loud, clean, and dependable. I paid $530 used (including tax) back in '99 when it was only a few months old. It has been worth every penny.

Would I get another one if it were stolen or lost? A few months ago I would have said yes. I used to live in a house and play with a band. I needed an amp this big and this loud. But now I have moved to another city. I don't play with a band anymore and I live in a quiet apartment complex.

Therefore, I just sold my DeVille last week for $450. So you can see that it holds its value very well too! I now have a Peavey Delta Blues. It's a bit smaller, and it's only 30 watts so I can keep the volume down to bedroom levels. But it still has enough kick for small gigs.

But I think I like it even better than my DeVille overall, but I'll leave that for another review! :)

Features : 7
I bought this amp in early 1997.
The 4x10 is a relatively versatile amp. I'm not a bells-and-whistles person, so I don't expect millions of tricks ala Line6, etc. The 2.5 channels (come on Fender, that 3rd channel isn't really a channel) are versatile enough for me. At first I didn't like the distortion at all, which is odd because when I heard it in the store it was great. I used it strictly for clean sounds for a couple of years until I finally decided to figure out how to make it do what I wanted. I generally set the gain around 4 or 5 without the "more gain" option (the alleged 3rd channel). It's nice and gritty, but only when you hit it. I've never used the headphone jack. In fact, I've never even checked to see if it has one. Never bothered with the effects loop either. The reverb goes deep. When I use it, which is rare, it's at about 2, which is plenty for me. If you want surf, this reverb can do it. I wish reverb and tremolo were interchangeable options. Choose one or the other when you buy. Reverb is useless for me, so it's basically a useless option. Also, there's no line-out for recording, at least not that I can find, which is bad in either case. The 7 is for the lack of a record-out and the fake 3rd channel.

Sound Quality : 9
I almost always play one of my Strats. I have a strange Les Paul I pull out now and then, but it sounds kind of boingy on this amp. It sounds good with a jazz hollowbody as well. I only have a Cort Jim Triggs (the one humbucker, one cutaway model), so I can only image what it would do with a high end hollowbody. The touch sensitivity is pretty good. I actually use this amp more now than my old Mesa, which has about the worst clean sound this side of a? well, I don't know what. Anyway, the clean is thick and beautiful, but can get as sharp as you need it to. It's bloody loud too. I've only ever had it up to 6 or so, and it was loud enough to hurt my ears. The clean doesn't break up at high volumes. The distortion is good for anything under the Smashing Pumpkins/Creed gain level. Maybe with a humbucker equipped guitar it would push a little more. With the gain boost and the actual gain setting you can get a good variety of sounds. I had it A/B'd with a Marshall JCM800 one time, and I think Jim Marshall would be embarrassed. It didn't blow away the Fender's distortion like I thought it would. The Fender actually had a little more depth and character to it. I give it 9 because I love the clean channel and the low-gain settings on channel 2, but 10 should be reserved for really really great distortion. Which this doesn't have.

Reliability : No Opinion
No problems ever. I've moved across the country with it. Never gigged with it though, so I don't know that I can give a valid opinion on it.

I've been playing for 12 or 15 years (who keeps track anyway?), and this is one of the best I've had. I might try something else if it were stolen, but only because I like to experiment. Who doesn't like to try new stuff? I chose the 4x10 for the tight sound it gave. The 2x12 was a little bassy for me. In the price range, I'm not sure anything can beat it, or at least it's near the top for value.

This amp is high-powered 60 watt tube amp. It's worst feature is that it weighs almost 60 pounds. If you're playing small gigs with stairs and such, it can be a hassle. I say this because it's such a great jazz amp (jazz gigs are usually in smaller places in weird locations). It's best features are the most beautiful clean sound you'll ever hear, and enough volume to play anywhere. My DeVille was made in 1999. The features of this amp are quite simple really; overdrive, reverb, and presence. The distortion sound on this amp is definitely not for everyone. If you're looking for a really crunchy (Think mid-90's era smashing pumpkins), you'll be disappointed that it doesn't have this sound. This amp has more of what I refer to as a "sour" distortion sound that's a lot better for playing lead lines than rhythm guitar parts.

Sound Quality : 8
I play on my Deville with a Gibson ES-335. That guitar and this amp have something in common in that they're both made to be really versatile. I have been able to play in almost every musical style with this combination. I've also run acoustic/electrics and a stratocaster through this amp, and all have sounded really good. Despite a relatively low amount of features, you really can use this amp for anything if you experiment with it for awhile. Like I mentioned before, the distortion sound isn't for everyone though. Probably the best sounds for a 600 dollar amp.

Reliability : 10
This has to be the most reliable amp ever. I've had it for nearly five years, and it even still has its original tubes. I don't gig with a backup.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never dealt with fender

Overall Rating : 9
I've been playing since I was 10 years old (about 11 years). I have owned a few amps in my lifetime, but the only reason I can ever see for buying another amp is that this thing's weight. I love it so much, however, because it's so versatile. If there is one specific style you're trying to play in, it might be advantageous to buy a more style specific amp. However it's best at playing jazz and funk because of the wonderful clean sound. As far as value goes, 600 bucks for this is the best deal you're going to get on a tube amp. If it was lost or stolen, there's no way I could live without another one.

not sure of the build year but mine is a tweed one like yhr 59 bassman (looks great!) features wise the amp is pretty basic and thank God for it. I had a '90s showman with all the push/pull knobs in the world but although it was avery good amp, it can't hold a candle to this one. It has a clean channel that can melt the coldest heart, rich and sweet and very resonant, neber thin, don't go mental with the clean channel's top end though. I use the amp in small to medium venues - bars mostly and find that it can be VERY loud at low vol settings so be carefull with the mix & people's ears! I play a wide variety of of cover songs to make a living and this amp xan do just about anything when you use a good fx processor in the loop. I use a Rocktron intellifex with it as the other units I have tried spoiled the amp's tone (I strongly recomend the intellifex by the way)
I don't use the Drve setting only the MORE drive one and the inherent tone of the amp allows Van Halen to Gus n Roses to Steve Vai and Dhania Twain without missing a beat! I use an eq pedal to switch to an rythm sound for both vlean and distorted whitch reduces the out put from the fx output before going back to the amp. Lead sounds are unrestricted for max tone. I love the HDR, I went to buy a Boogie but this won for it's touch sensitive & articulate rich tone. downsides are that it does seem to go throgh power tubes, I now use Sovtek ones that sound better and last longer, the amp is extremly loud and can be difficult to keep from blasting out the band. also it is pretty heavy to carry around. Plus sides are tone, simplicity and reliability, ,ine fell from a car at 40 m.ph. and suffered nothing!
So unless you are playing really heavy stuff you should go and get one

My DeVille is around a '97 I think. Great sounding amp especially at high volume with the tubes warmed up. Does run very hot and playing in a small venue tends to get overheated. 4 10's are great for blues but if you want hard rock distortion go with marshall you won't find it here.

Sound Quality : 9
I use it with a Jazzmaster reissue and a tele thinline reissue. Both are good with the amp in their own right. Has a nice heavy stance and rumbles the floor well, don't put this on a stand and waste that. This amp will get plenty loud for any medium size gig and stays relatively clean at high volume (goes to 12 instead of ten) around eight is the sweet spot. Try using a volume box to get that screaming tube tone at lower volumes for your neighbor's sake. Tubes wear out quick maybe try something other than groove tubes which come standard.

Reliability : 8
Other than tube wear very sturdy and can be tossed about and used hard especially for the price you pay.

Been playing for 10 or 11 years this is my favorite amp so far. Just bought a cyber-twin to try out but keeping this tweed beauty forever. Overall a nine great tone and could be even better with some money invested in the perfect speaker/tube combo for your own sound. But if you like blues this is the ticket. Just check out the next live performance you see on tv or at a concert and the deville will appear back there.

It's a fender, so it's gonna sound pretty good. Reminds me a lot of a super, but with more rawness. the overdrive channel is good,I really don't care what anyone tells you. it's good. It's a little noisy, but most amps are. big deal. I use a USA, strat, yeah SRV, HENDRIX,WHATEVER. It gets the sounds. Chorus, Wah thats it. By the way, don't blame bad tone on amps. Blame it on bad left hands and Sh!tty guitars. Your guitar only sings from you, your amp only sings fomr your guitar, EMc2+...yeah it ain't rocket science

Classic Fender Clean and overdriven blues and classic-rock sounds. If you liked Hendrix, you'll like this amp.
It has loads of bass, and a chimey-crystalline high end that does not seem harsh and hurt your ears.
The distortions are rich and very controllable in their break-up characteristics.

If you like metal-distortion, I can't comment because I never try that.

10 on sound, but the amp is very cheaply constructed. Thin plywood, flabby speaker grilles, poorly attached hardware. I had to go around and gently tighten every screw on the thing.
5 on construction.
What made it more obvious was that I returned a Mesa-Boogie F30 to trade for the HRD. The Mesa was top-quality construction and I tried really hard to like the sound of it, but the Mesa just didn't have any tone at all. The HRD just has the magic tones, so I will tolerate its flimsy construction.

This is a 4x10 60 Watt unit with matched Groove Tube 6L6's. I'm sure you know the most of the big details. This is a two channel amp with a "more gain" feature dressed up as a seperate 3rd channel. This is a two channel amp so don't be fooled. There is one EQ for both channels, and one reverb. No reverb on the foot switch. It does have an effects loop and external speaker jack. It came with a handy nylon cover as well.

Sound Quality : 9
The clean channel is phenominal. This is where Fender's truly shine. Plenty of headroom, and lots of volume to spare. This thing is loud but very warm. The distortion channel is excellent if you are into blues or jazz. This isn't a JCM2000, nor should you expect it to be. If you want heavy distortion buy a stomp box. I run a Boss TU Tuner-->Boss GE 7 EQ-->Line 6 DM4 Distortion Modeler-->Boss AC Acoustic Simulator-->Boss CH1 Chorus-->Line 6 DL4 Delay Modeler-->Fender Hotrod Deville 4x10-->Hartke GH410 Cabinet. I don't use the effects loop. I like my effects out front. Just a matter of preference. If you use a distortion stomp box you will not be disappointed. It comes out smooth, warm, and the 4 10's cut through the mix. The external speaker jack is a hidden treasure. It basically turns your amp into a 60W head@8 Ohms with four built in speakers. I run the Deville to a 4x10 cabinet. The sound of 8 10's is phenominal for classic rock which is what I love. If you use an extension cabinet it is critical for you to get the Ohms right. You can melt down your rig.

Reliability : 7
I've had to take it in twice to repair the input jack. The input is mounted on the top of the rig, so if it gets pulled on it isn't going to pop out, it's going to push and pull the lining of the jack back and forth. I'm just a bit more mindful of it and I haven't had any problems since. The repair was covered under the very nice 5 year warranty.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never needed to use them.

Overall Rating : 8
Overall this is a great amp. You get that creamy tube tone, and that Fender clean sound which is second to none. I thought this amp was far superior to the Deville 2x12. I just couldn't get a decent clean sound of the 2x12. This amp has plenty of balls, and if someone ever stole it I would definitely get another. You get more for the price than any other amp with a decent brand.

You know the features-3 channels(Clean, Drive, and more Drive), 60 watts, 4 10" speakers and the usual controls plus a preamp out. The channels are footswitchable, too. Maybe if Fender had at least put different EQ's between the clean and drive channels I would've given it a higher rating here.

Sound Quality : 6
I'm using this amp with an '03 Japanese FEnder Jaguar with humbuckers. Sometimes I run a Maxon OD-9, a ProCo Rat and an EHX Big Muff Pi in gront of the amp. The reason it gets a 6 here is because the clean channel has the clean sound I love from Fenders but the drive channels aren't that good. The "Drive" channel is good when the drive is set low so you get the oldschool cranked up Fender tone which is nice, but it starts to crap out after that. The "More Drive" channel lacks attack and sounds almost like a tube driven ProCo Rat, which sucks. If you're gonna attempt to make a channel to rock out with, which I'm sure this channel was intended for, it should have some tightness and attack, and this channel doesn't so its's useless. I know Fenders weren't meant for gainier tones, but the impression I get is that this channel was at least supposed to ape a cranked Plexi, and it completely fails. But the clean channel redeams the amp.

Reliability : No Opinion
I've never had problems here, but Fender honestly used cheaper tubes and speakers on this one so I'm sure it's possible to have future problems.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I've never dealt with Fender.

Overall Rating : 5
I've been playing guitar for over four years and I own all the gear I already mentioned, but I know what I'm talking about here. I gave the amp a 6 for sound, but overall the amp gets a 5 because it's really a failure as far as Fenders go. If you're buying an amp with 3 channels shouldn't you get something more usable? Honestly, I never expected great distortion out of this amp and I bought it because it had the best clean sound of any amp in its price range. If it got lost or stolen I'd buy something else, but I don't care to get rid of this amp anytime soon because again, I'm a fan of the clean channel and this amp was the reason I reached a pivotal moment in every musician's life-the neighbors calling the police on you because of noise complaints.

I own a 1998 HR DeVille 4x10 Combo Brown Tweed and Oxblood Frontgrill made in Corona, CAL. A very Sexy outfit - looks like '59 Bassman.

This Tube-Amp satisfies all basic needs - nothing more or less.

Sound Quality : 10
I play my 20years old Fender American Standard Strat and I'm completly satisfied with the Sound my DeVille provides.

It gives me the sweet cleansound and that bluesy overdrive which suits well for my purpose. Even the more OD is sometimes useful. I play "Britpop" - favs are Robbie Williams, Oasis, Travis, The Beatles, Eric Clapron, INXS, Crowded House and others.

Check my Homepage: www.fabmusic.de (German)

The built-in Reverb is nice but I prefer a Boss Reverb/Delay Pedal which is inserted in the fx-loops (very helpful) with other, mainly Boss Pedals (Octaver, Chorus and others) and a Morley Wah.

The Amp is lound and sweet - a great tube-sound for little Money. It's not my First Fender but it seems to be my Last.

Back to the Deville:
A great sounding & good-lookin piece of Gear. I suppose that I will keep this Amp forever. It may be that other (more-expensive) Amps could do a better job but as I'm pleased there is no reason to change.

It does the Sound I have always expected. And remember - it's not the Gears that makes the music sound right.
That's all.

Got my DeVille back in 97', so I've been playing it a while now. You know the features. I bought this amp for the clean channel alone, so I wasn't looking for a feature-laden, super versatile amp. I initially played this amp primarily for intrumental surf, roots and blues but as the years wore on, I became increasingly pleased with tone of the Drive Channel, which I dissed initially because it wasn't the tone of a good, analog overdrive pedal. The dual 6L6's provide plenty of headroom but if you replace the power amp tubes along with the preamp tubes you won't be sorry. In my opinion, the effects loop on this unit really sucks, so I only use pedals in front of the amp. Even though the reverb is not a tube reverb, it still sounds great - pure Fender but it would be nice to have it switchable at the footswitch, no biggie though. The amp has more than enough headroom to gig with in a medium sized venue, but let's face it, you'll rarely play live at that level and if you do, it will be miked through the P.A. The amazing thing to me is how well it sounds at lower, wine and cheese gig levels (around 2 on the volume).

Sound Quality : 8
Nice clean tone, a perfect foundation for pedals too. I personally like the tighter response of the solid state rectifier - tube rectifiers can be problematic and in some cases, too spongy feeling. Like I mentioned before, low levels are still full and juicy but the amp ramps up to very loud levels by the time you get the volume to 5. It's remarkable in that respect. The More Drive Channel doesn't melt my butter, but the Drive channel, set low (around 3-5)adds grit without murking-up chord definition. It's a cool tone that's fully workable and I rarely use my posse of overdrive pedals anymore (just echo and verb). Great clean channel and a switchable low-drive channel qualify it for a 8 here.

Reliability : 7
Well.... I've burned through a shitload of power amp tubes with this beast so be forewarned - they idle hot. I've had it rebiased a few times but it still prefers good power amp tubes as it's main food source. Oh well, at least the tone is there.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Customer support for a Fender?

Very good overall rating. It's a real workhorse for gigging with a blues, surf, country or classic rock style band. Definitely not for the detuned, 7 string triple rectifier crowd or the boutique tone snobs, but they wouldn't be looking at this review anyway.

As far as features it is great. This is a 2003 version i bought new. I was gonna buy used but wanted one real quick. It is great for all styles of music except heavy rock or metal. Don't go tube if you want those sounds. I mean, you get clean, drive and more drive. What more do you want from a tube amp. The only reason i give this an 8 instead of 10 is because it does not feature a reverb on off switch on the amp or footswitch. I also wish it was fan cooled like the Peavey Classic 50 is.

Sound Quality : 7
THe sound of this amp is great. I love the creamy clean channel. The presence can be ear piercing if set too high. As far as overdrive it is good but sounds a little forced for a tube amp. I think different power tubes and better pre amp tubes would make this better. I use it with a peavey classic 50 4x10 both always running. The peavey stays on the lead channel with just a slight distortion. That way my clean even sounds a little broken up. This is a great amp for the clean, especially if you use another amp or an analog overdrive to help the distortion a little. I don't like my distortion very hard or dirty. I rated it a 7 becasue the clean is a 10, the overdrive is an 8 and the extra drive is a 5. That rounds to about a 7 all around.

Reliability : 9
I do use it without a backup in a way. I have this and my classic there but I need both for my tone. I haven't had any problems yet and hope i don't. The only thing i expect is tubes to wear out and we all know that is going to happen.

If this amp were stolen or destroyed I would probably buy another Fender but go to the deluxe just to lighten my load cuause this thing is really loud and heavy. I think a smaller version that is close the the same amp would fit my need better.

This was made in 2002 I think. It's pretty basic with Fender Reverb, clean, drive/and more drive channels, presence, and bright switch, and all tube except for the solid state rectifier. The rest of the features, it's been written over many times below. I play mostly blues, jazz, and contemporary stuff mostly, but I like to have the versatility to play various styles if needed. I wasn't looking for a unit that does everything. I have my digital equipement for that. I wanted the fender tone, the creamy, warm tones, the fender clean sound, and enough wattage to play in a small to mid size gig if needed. I got what I was looking for in this amp. There may not be a lot of bells and whistles on this, but it does what it was made for exceptionally well.

Sound Quality : 10
this is where this amp shines, the spring reverb is great, just don't get too crazy with it. the drive channel is great for blues sound. By itself, it's not going to do heavey metal or punk, but you can add a pedal for that. The 4 x 10" eminence speakers are great, the bottom is tight and the highs are crisp. I would probably like to have seen a mix of 2 x 12" and 2 x 10". But the sound projects very nicely, and it's pretty loud. The creamy warm tone it has is excellent, this may just be the keeper for me.

too early to tell but it's been around a long time and there hasn't been much problems with these units when I spoke to a local repair shop.

Customer Support : No Opinion
haven't needed them yet, but the servicing and stuff is dealt through local authorized service dealers so it really depends on the local merchants you deal with, not fender directly.

I love this amp. I took my time looking around and compared it with the Fender Pro Reverb, Hot Rod Delux, Trace Elliot Velocette and VOX. I preferred this units tone best. This is just my opinion and my experience of this little unit. It may not be what you are looking for because it really isn't as versatile as the Fender Pro Reverb or the VOX, but it does the few things it's suppose to very well...and that was what I was looking for...the clear, warm, creamy tone. I'm not looking heavey distortions, but if I needed it, then I can just run a pedal infront of the deville, or else I can plug my POD straight into the mixer.

Made in the USA in 2000, except for the footswitch which was made in Mexico. The amp is pretty versatile for my instrumental rock band (smooth clean parts with delay, light distortions. See www.northvia.com), but only somewhat versatile when covering other styles. You know the features. I bought an EQ to make up for the lack of a second set for the clean channel. The amp will get louder than anybody else's combo in your band, most likely. Of course, it is all tube if you don't use the loop or reverb. The rectifier is solid state.

My axe is a 2001 Fender American Strat. I am a single coil guy. I have used this amp in cover bands, (covering Pearl Jam, Radiohead, Coldplay, Oasis, even Third Eye Blind) and it doesn't really hit any of the sounds perfectly. Don't get me wrong, it is pretty good, but definitely not great in this role. It is most suited, in my experience, for more of an indie-rock sound. Not punk, not riffs, not heavy chording. I use it for my etheral sounding instrumental band in the following ways: I use a completely clean sound rarely because it sounds a little offensive to me on the high middle range. I use the first OD a lot with reverb and delay. I prefer this to the clean channel because you get more sustain and it smoothes the harshness out. You'll need to adjust your settings for a good OD sound however. I only use the last OD as a volume boost for lead parts. OD is basically too middy and offensive for heavy chording, however. If you play this amp at any volume less than that required to cover a drum set, you will likely hate your basic sound, on whatever channel you use. Effects will be required to make it useable unless you want just one basic sound. I run my EQ and Delay in the loop. The EQ pedal saves this amp in many ways, tone wise, but you still lack the sustain you want. The delay must be in the loop if you want to use it with OD. I do volume swells with delay and OD and get an almost EBow sound. Here's the problem...the effects loop is a must for running certain pedals, but it simply stinks. The volume is cut down a lot (maybe 15% or so) and tone is lost. Quite a predicament that puts me in. The only solution would be to get external distortions and run the whole mess in the front, which is fine, but almost no pedal will be as smoothe as the OD you can get from the amp itself. The clean breaks up at about 6 or 7 on the volume. Don't expect you band members to stay in the room or even on the stage if you do this, however. I was initially surprised that the four tens didn't put out more bass, but now I appreciate their tonal range (you know, the range the guitar is designed for!). I love this amp's basic sound sometimes, but other times it disappoints me. In all actuality, I'd have to say that it's not too versatile, although basically good. I built the famous Deluxe Volume Control from Radio Shack parts, and I never use it.

I used this amp to record a demo with my band NorthVia. Go to www.northvia.com to download some stuff from the demo. Email me if you want me to explain my setting on tracks.

I never gig with a backup. This guy has taken some falls during the year that I've gigged with it, but it has always worked fine.

Bought it used. Never dealt with Fender.

I've been playing six years. I'm 21 and I've been in numerous bands. It beats every solid state amp that I've had, (Fender Princeton 65, Crate GFX 65, Marshall VS-100 head) but it isn't "all that". You are dealing with a huge, bulky, extreamly heavy, and very basic hunk of wood, plastic, and metal. Making it "versatile" can be a predicament with the FX loop sucking. You'll want an EQ pedal if you like variety. You'll want distortion, maybe even compression also. It is very basic, but a very good platform, and it beats the SS stuff. If it were stolen I'd look into a smaller tube amp - maybe a Deluxe, or an EL84 based combo like the Peavey Classics. Maybe not though. I'm not sure. I may be looking to trade this monster in even if it isn't stolen. It's not a bad amp though. It just isn't great. For basic sound 9. For versatility in use and sound 5.

My HR Devile 4 x 10 is from 1996. I looked for a simple tubeamp with a good clean sound and good for blues and rock. It has not many features but that keeps is simple and that is what I wanted. The FX-loop is not good useable. It seems to be that the sound from the preamp to the poweramp is not 100% the same. I do not use the FX-loop.

Sound Quality : 8
I play with a Wasburn HB 335 with hums. I mostly play blues en rock. The stocktubes make de amp very loud (to loud). I replaced the preamp tubes V1 and V2 for JAN 5751 wich have 30% less gain. It make the drivechannel more usefull and the cleanchannel becomes more bluesier. The amp is more quit and better usefull at homepractices.
The sound is exellent and this amp is very nice for clean sounds and blues.

Be carefull with tubeamps after gigging. Handle this baby with care and if you do this the amp and specially the tubes gets a longer life!

I cannot say something about it because I bought it secondhand from the Internet in Holland.

I play three years electric gitar and this is my first tubeamp and I love it! The amp is about 30 kilo's and that is heavy but that is the price of a good sound.

4 x 10" speakers in a 2/3 open back cab, Shared EQ of Bass, Mid, Treble for both channels, check out Fender.com to get the full scoop. I wish it had a gain control for each of the channels, and the "3 Channel" thing is, to me, a load of crap. It's two channels with a "more gain" option, which is just a little extra umph on the distortion gain range. The reverb is SUPER wet, NOT a bad thing, just don't go crazy with it. This is a tube amp, for any who don't know. oh, and the clean channel has a brightness switch, for bright or not. Very cool.

I'm using a warmoth strat with two Rio Grande P-90s. The speaker set up is unlike what I traded it in for, it doesn't have the low-end chug of slugging through palm-muted, drop-D chords, which is great, because I couldn't care less about those. It has a wonderful punchy sound, and seems to loose a little of that on the distortion channel, but is still very compairable. I have a friend who has the 2x12" version, says he hates the distortion. In my life, I always seem to like Fender's distortion, solid state and tube. This amp is wonderful because it breaks up at clean volume of about 2 or 3, you can get the clean chime then spake it for a nice crunch. The distortion channels are a fender-brand, so don't be expecting to get a mesa or a marshall, but to me it's like a Bassman with an extra gain range so you can go from clean, to blues, to solid rock.

Reliability : 10
I've not gigged it about places, but I have trucked it from home and back a few times to recording and practice. I like how this amp is designed. It's just the right size so that you don't sacrifice the speaker set up (and I've always loved the 4x10" set up), but it's not huge. It's a tube amp, so I just assume that I might have to go under the hood sometime in the future, but my friend who has the same amp in the 2x12" version has taken the amp to countless shows in the past two years and has never had a problem. That's aweseome, so we'll assume this one is built like a tank (because it looks that way)

I'm not sure. I've heard nightmare stories and I've heard tales of jubilation. no comment for now

This isn't the end all of tube amps. It's not a holy grail, etc. What I like about it is that it's a plain and simple amp. It's got some great features, and the clean channel is what I've come to expect from some of the finest tube amps. The disortion isn't to die for, but it's not to die from either, I use it, and every time I do, I like it more and more. If you want a tube amp that you can have all the fun of tweaking and overdriving (I like to have a MXR Microamp in the chain before the input), this is the amp for you. It's a workhorse, it's ready, and it's rockin. Gotta love it.
