I give this amp a solid 10 for features, not because it has a ton of them, but because it's so simple. Volume, tone, and on/off switch.

I love simple and this amp really does it for me. If you use any effects your sound has probably gone through one or two eq's before it hits your amp anyways. It always seemed redundant to me for amps to have a bazillion knobs.

Sound Quality : 8
This is not the best sounding amp you'll ever buy. That's just a given with the price range and 10" speaker, but it's a great building block for some good tone.

My solution was to build a box for it and turn it into a head. I play through a 1x12 cab with an eminence private jack and it really sings. I run the amp between 4&5 when I play which is just around the breakup point for the tubes and I just love the tone I get. I use a schecter c1-elite and I can clean up the tone by going to the single-coil setting or push it with the humbuckers to get just a hint of some overdrive.

I love this amp. I wish it had a little more clarity, but it's inexpensive enough that I'm not afraid to keep tweaking it and playing with it to improve the tone. If this was a Dr. Z or something in that price range, I wouldn't even want to take out a single screw. (And I played in a band with a guy who had a Dr Z.. his tone was not much better than mine IMO)

Reliability : 10
Never had a problem with this amp and I've played the hell out of it. I bought it around three years ago and have never regretted it.

Customer Support : No Opinion
never had a problem, so I can't say anything about the support.

DEAR FENDER,

PLEASE MAKE THIS AMP AS A 15W HEAD AND DON'T SCREW IT UP BY ADDING ANY KNOBS.

THANKS,
JIM

Very simple controls, Volume and Tone. It can sound great for many types of playing, but not all. It is basically an all tube practice size amp with a big sound that can be quite distorted with just a twist of the volume knob. 15 watts, 10 inch speaker. Pretty loud but not firm enough in the bottom for live rock band.

Sound Quality : 7
Sound quality is subjective. If you set it pretty low in volume it is relatively quiet and full sound. I really like the distorted tones it will produce, but boy does it get noisy when you go there. The tubes love to rattle as well. I have tried different ones to get rid of the rattle but it eventually comes back. Damn fun amp however, and the size and portability give it great versatility.

Reliability : 9
I believe it to be quite reliable. It has never stopped producing sound. Tubes are cheap and easy to source so it will continue to be useful forever.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Fender? They are a great brand, but I wouldn't send this amp to them for any reason.

Overall Rating : 7
I really like this amp for the vintage styling of the appearance and tones. Now that I own some really serious hand made amps to compare it to it seems a little blah. Fender doesn't really make a great sounding cheap amp other than this one. They are pushing their branding as far as it can go with most of the pathetic line. The so called reissues don't live up to their namesakes in most cases and they the custom shop stuff that does is outrageous expensive .
With that in mind, this about the coolest value out there for the money.

I got the '94 USA blonde with the oxblood grill. Really simple operation which is what I like. ON/OFF switch, Input, Pilot Light, Volume and Tone knobs with 15 watts thru a 10" special design speaker. I bought this one recently to replace one I gave to a friend from Spain that was over here in the US to make a documentary about the blues scene in Texas. More on that later. I love the blues and also play old motown and classic rock and this amp fits in nicely. For what the amp is I give it a 9

Sound Quality : 7
I play a USA strat with stock pups and also just got the road worn 50's strat with the tex-mex pups and they both soung really good thru this amp. I never had the bad humm in either one that I owned but they were both used so maybe someone did the short screw mod to it before I got it. It does have a little humm when you crank it but I always turn the volume down on the guitar between songs so thats not a problem. When I had the first one I really liked the way it sounded but really only played it for a practice amp. When I gave it to my friend they had a gig later that nite and I went to check them out. He had his les paul plugged in and the amp was mic'd thru the pa and I couldn't believe what I was hearing. The tone was awesome and I knew I had to get another. This thing was bone stock and kickin ass. I read the reviews about the speaker and tube changes everyone makes to get thier tone but think it sounds good right out of the box. Tone is a very subjective thing. What I like my rig to sound like will not be the same as the next guy.

Reliability : 10
The first one I had was reliable and would gig locally without a backup. I had it for about a year and played it all the time but when I travel I always bring a backup. The second one would be trusted as well but would bring spare tubes and fuses at least. I have been playing tube amps for over 30 years and have only had two problems in all that time. The first time was a leaky roof in a club during a bad rainstorm that dripped a couple of drops behind my blues deville and splashed up on a hot tube. I finished the last set thru the pa. The second time was a defective tube (stock GT) that came in my vibro king. We were playing local and I had someone go and grab me another amp.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never really had to deal with fender. I have two great amp techs that work on my stuff when needed plus most of my gear is way out of warranty. The only new fender amp I ever bought was that 212 blues deville and it held up well back in '93 or '94. I hear good and bad stuff about fender. GOOD LUCK!!

Overall Rating : 9
I have been playing over 30 years and have owned a lot of tube amps. Mostly fender amps but have also had some Solid State Peavey, Solid State Marshall, Line 6 Spider, Tube Newcomb, Tube Masco. I have a pile of fender amps from a 1960 fender bassman to my replaced fender pro and a lot in between. I think for the money that you can get the pro jr for new or used you will find a place for it in your arsenal. It's compact and light and if you need more volume just mic it up. It might not be your holy grail but you never know. Happy Hunting!

I have the USA blonde with the oxblood grill cloth. 15 watts, On/off switch, Pilot light, vol/tone knobs and input. Pretty simple but thats what I wanted. Actually this one is the second one I have owned. The first one I had I got from a friends pawn shop. I was super clean and I really didn't know much about them when I bought it. I liked that it reminded me of my 1960 tweed champ. It was a great deal so I tried it and was like WOW... This little amp sounds really good. The first one I gave to a friend from Spain that was over to tour around and it sounded so good I bought another one to replace it. More on that later....

Sound Quality : 9
The first one I had I bought used and it didn't have the crazy hum everyone talks about. Maybe someone had already done the center screw trick. It had the eminence 10" speaker not the jensen blue and still sounded good. I mainly play Blues with a USA strat with stock pups but have played my jumbo body jazz guitars thru it with great results. I remember later that nite when my new friend from Spain plugged his Les Paul into it at a local bar and started playing he was grinning from ear to ear. We mic'd it into the pa and I was listening out front and man that thing sounded good. I had mostly just played it as a practice amp around the house and had never giged with it. After that I had to get me another one and did just that. I have a nice collection of guitars and amps ranging from a 1960 bassman to a MIM blues jr limited edition tweed and I really like the pro jr. I think it fits in as a small club amp as well as a great practice amp.

Reliability : 9
Everything held up good on the first one and also the second one which is the USA model too that has not given me any problems either. I can honestly say that in the past I was one of those dyed in the wool "it has to say USA" on it but reading the reviews for the MIM Blue jr tweed limited edition and than buying one has changed my mind. That comes from a guy that has a stack of USA strats and would still grab my mexican strat for a gig in a heartbeat. It sounded as good as the others. I would grab my pro jr and play a club without a backup. Not a very good idea to some but I have only had two problems with my tube amps over 34 years. I guess I've been lucky.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I have been playing a long time and have two great techs that keep all my tube gear rolling when needed. I buy new stuff from a local store that takes care of me and warranty work. I rarely buy new amps or guitars that have a warranty. Never dealt with fender.

Overall Rating : 10
If it were lost or stolen I sure would buy another. MIM or USA. I have owned a large amount of vintage amps over the years and can honestly say that the fender pro jr has been a pleasent suprise. My working collection includes Newcomb G-12, SF fender prosonic, 1960 fender bassman, 1947 Masco, Early blonde fender vibro king, Tweed fender blues deluxe, fender vibratone, Custom vibrolux reverb, MIM fender tweed blues jr LTD. ED. and thats the short list. Back to the pro jr, Some like to mod it and are lookin for a certain sound and some have found it really good stock. I have not owned the MIM model but would have no problem with buying one. The one thing I have learned over the years about tone is that everyone is searching for their holy grail. I'm not saying that the pro jr is that holy grail for you but it could be. I like it! HAPPY HUNTING....

I have a mexico made pro junior i bought off ebay. I love the el 84 sound. features are basic

Sound Quality : 7
I go back and forth with this amp on sound. It is noisy. When I got it the center top screw on the back was pushing the metal shield into one of the pots. take the back off and bend the flange doen so the screw wont push it eliminated alot of the hum. It still has some tho. The sound is good. It gets pretty loud and sounds good into a seperate cab. The stock speaker sounds sorta confined. I plan some tweeking to get rid of the hum, new JJ tubes, and maybe a different speaker. It sounds good but not up to fender standards.

This amp would need some work to be really gig worthy. If you mic ed it the noise would probably come thru. Not a bad first amp specially for the price.

Pro Jr, black tolex, mase in USA - don't know when.

Sound Quality : 10
OUTSTANDING - one of my favorite amps. I bought mine used so I don't know if the speaker is original or not (I think it was a replacement) anyway, I think the reason mine sounds so great is the speaker. It's an Eminence 10446 blue alnico. I think you can still buy them for about 70 bucks online. For Blues this combo is a dream. All my friends who hear or play it want to buy it from me. Nice fat slightly gritty tone that's even better than my Blues Jr with an Eminence 12" Texas Heat Speaker. If you can find one of the Emi 10446 speakers try it - you will be impressed.

Reliability : 10
Never a problem.

This is an early to mid-90's Pro Junior. I bought it for $100 at a pawn shop in Montana while on tour up there. Features? Volume, Tone, a speaker...

Sound Quality : 8
This can widely vary until you figure out which tubes you prefer in your Pro Junior. I keep a spare set in the back of the amp at all times, and even keep the old tubes after I've switched. EL84s, especially in these cheap tube sockets, can be real finicky, noisy, pingy, rattly. But if I keep some good EL84s and a 12AY7 and a 12 AX7 in there, in combination with a speaker upgrade (in my case a Celestion Vintage 10---a bit dark, but still sounds good and can't blow it up if I try).

Try the Pro Junior as a head through a good 1x12 cabinet and it really opens up. I recently recorded using Pro Jr into the 12 (Eminence Cannabis Rex) in my Dr Z Maz 18 Jr, and it sounded fantastic. Mike Campbell-ish chime, Keith Richards rhythm, early Zep lead. Good stuff.

Reliability : 9
Mine has only been in the shop once in 14 years---and I bought it used for $100. Like I said, I keep changing those tubes and it keeps working.

Don't know. Bought used.

For $100, nothing beats this but my Silvertone Twin Twelve, which I got for $75 in the mid-80s. It rocks; I've used it on stage, in the studio, at home. I've flown with it in the overhead of a Southwest Flight.

No sense in rerwriting what people have written below.

I bought the amp 2nd hand for 225 CDN. Mint shape - I don't think the guy had turned it on. He said he bought it in 2002. A new one lists for 435 CDN plus taxes = about $470 I wouldn't have (didn't) paid that. This is not a $500 amp. You can buy allot more amp for that. Worth what I paid.

Sound Quality : 5
I play a '58 Gibson ES125 with a Stock p90. I play swing jazz and blues. I wanted a no nonsense amp. Small, tube driven. The amp is exactly that. My struggle at first was that it was too trebelly for my ears. I replaced the speaker with an Eminece Lil' buddy for a warmer more present mid/bass range. This is a great soloution to using a larger speaker setup. I have also added a new jj and EH tube combination. There is a hiss but not even close to the one before my upgrade. I rarely crank this amp. I don't need to, I play in small clubs - great tone at low volume. The clean has a great puch to it. Rarely go past 5. Honestly, 12 is LOUD and it screams back at you. I wasn't looking for versitility in the amp just a straight up plug in and go set up. I do use a reverb pedal, I think it's a must. However not that I think they should add it too the amp. It's simplicity is it's selling point. I know a guy at work who plays Metal through his pro Junior. I rated sound quality 5 before the speaker switch and 8.5 after.

People continually comment on the tone I get. "That's your amp?!" Yep.

Reliability : 8
So far so good. 6 months.

Overall Rating : 7
I've been playing professionally for 10 years. I own a SG, an Epiphone Sorrento, My ES125 plus a multitude of Acoustics, Banjitar, Mandolin etc.

I would replace it. I would like to have gone with a small boutique amp but for the 1000 dollar difference this suits me and my budget fine. Again the simplicity and 2nd hand price sold me. Small package, easy to upgrade if you wish. I don't need that much volume. And the initial hiss and Trebal prompted me to switch things around. Glad I did.

If you can find a deal - great for the price. Retail price is iffy IMO. A little more money you are in a differnt amp range.

I OWNED 4, NOW 2. NO FRILLS ALL TUBE AMP, A VOL AND A TONE KNOB. IT IS A 1 TRICK PONEY BY ITSELF. REALLY WHAT ELSE DO YOU NEED THESE DAYS AS MOST PLAYERS ARE USEING MULTI EFFECTS PROCESSORS OR A MULTIPLE PEDAL SET UP. I USE THE PAIR OF THEM LIVE IN A STEREO SETUP BUT HAVE USED 1. I USE AN SM 57 TO MIC. PLENTY OF VOL YOU JUST NEED TO GET IT UP OFF THE GROUND. I USE A TABLE ON MY MIXER RACK AND MY CORD CASE BOX. YOU CAN ALWAYS GRAB A CHAIR. 15 "TUBE" WATTS GREAT GREAT TONE!

Sound Quality : 10
I USE 2 STRATS WITH HOT RAILS IN BACK AND COOL RAILS UP FRONT, AS WELL AS A PAIR OF TELES 1 A B BENDER AND THE OTHER IS A SLIDE RIG ALSO LOADED WITH HOT RAILS AND MINI HUMBUCKER UP FRONT. I PLAY EVERYTHING FROM COUNTRY, POP, ROCK, TO METAL. WHOEVER IS PAYING. I HAD 4 BUT SOLD 2. I HAVE A USA MODEL AND A MEXICAN MADE UNIT. THEY BOTH SOUND GREAT TO ME THEY ARE VERY CONSISTANT AND EVEN ON HEADROOM AND BREAK UP TONE AND THEY BOTH BREATH VERY, VERY WELL. ONLY ISSUE I HAD WAS THE TACO MODEL HAD QUITE A BIT OF NOISE. POPPED OFF THE BACK COVER AND THE CULPRIT WAS A WIRE GOING TO THE LIGHT WAS ZIP TIED AND IT PUT IT AT AN ANGLE PULLING IT INTO A METAL CLIP. SNIPPED THE TIE MOVED THE WIRE AND "VIOLA" YOU CAN'T TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THEM. THE DISTORTION BEGINS AROUND 4 GETTING REALLY HEAVY AS YOU GO UP. I LOVE THE SOUND BUT TRY TO KEEP IT CLEAN AS I CHANGE SOUNDS ON MY BOARD AND USE MY VOL KNOB ALSO. AWSOME TONE AND I AM REALLY AMAZED AT THE SOUND COMING FROM THESE AMPS. BROKE MY BACK, SO MY JUMBO STACK DAYS ARE GONE AS WELL AS MY TWIN DAYS, IS THAT A RIDICULAS AMP OR WHAT! SUPER HEAVY AND BRUTALLY LOUD!!! YOU NEVER GET THE TUBES COOKING. ANYWAY THIS IS REALLY THE PERFECT AMP FOR ME. I HAVE READ ABOUT MODS AND SPEAKER CHANGES BUT I HAVE NO COMPLAINTS ON IT NOW ONLY PRAISE. VERY POWERFUL, VERY VERY LIGHT, GREAT CONTROLABLE FEEDBACK BREATHABILITY QUALITIES. REMEMBER IT IS 15 TUBE WATTS. YES A WATT IS A WATT BUT TUBE AMPS ARE RATED DIFFERENTLY THAN SOLID STATE THAT IS WHY A TUBE AMP IS ALWAYS "PERCIEVED" LOUDER ROUGHLY 1 TUBE WATT = 3 SS WATTS. FOR THOSE WHO DISAGREE GO TO A STORE AND PLAY A SS AND A TUBE AMP OF EQUAL WATTAGE THEN TELL ME WHICH IS LOUDER. A TUBE AMP HAS MORE DEFINITION AND REALY CUTS THRU. SS AMPS HAVE ALWAYS LEFT ME LOST IN THE MIX OR AS I PUT IT FLOATING WHICH IS FINE IF YOUR BLENDING BUT LEAD TIME AND FILLER TIME YOU EITHER BURIED OR MIXING THE INTERNAL ORGANS OF YOUR BAND MATES. TUBES HAVE MUCH MORE DEFINITION WARMTH AND TONE. I HAVE TRIED A FEW SS AND NEVER CARED FOR THEM. SS AMPS ARE LIKE MASTERBATION, YOUR ONLY SCREWING YOURSELF. VERY LIFELESS TO ME AND NO BREATHABILITY.

Reliability : 10
I HAVE NOT HAD ANY ISSUES PERIOD OTHER THAN THE HUM WHICH WAS A WIRE THAT JUST NEEDED TO BE MOVED OVER. I HAVE READ ABOUT SOME HAVING NOISE ISSUES NEEDING TO REMOVE THE CENTER TOP BACK PANEL SCREW ECT. OUT OF THE 4 I HAVE HAD THEY WERE THE SAME AS THE LAST VERY CONSISTANT. I DO AND HAVE GIGGED WITH IT WITH NO BACK UP. NO WAY WILL I TOTE EXTRA AMPS 1 IS HEAVY ENOUGH. IF YOU NEED TO BRING BACK UP GEAR, GET BETTER GEAR.

Customer Support : 10
NEVER DEALT WITH THEM ON GEAR. CALLED ONCE FOR INFO ON DATING AN AMP AND THEY WERE VERY HELPFUL.

Overall Rating : 10
20+ YR VET ALWAYS USED PEAVEY, TRIED CRATE, MARSHALL, VOX, AS WELL AS MANY OTHERS. SWITCH TO FENDERS A FEW YEARS BACK STARTING WITH A TWIN, THEN A DELUXE REVERB, PRINCETON REVERB, VIBRO CHAMP AND FINALLY THE PRO JR. THE HALF STACKS AND TWINS LOOK COOL ON STAGE BUT BEGIN TO PALE IN THE MOONLIGHT AS THE NIGHT WEARS ON AND YOU BEGIN TO THINK ABOUT TEAR DOWN AND LOADING. IF YOU USE TUBE YOU ARE REALLY BLOWING IT IF YOUR AMP IS OVER A 40 WATTER. YOU NEVER GET IT UP LOUD ENOUGH TO REALLY COOK THE TUBES YOU MAY AS WELL PLAY A SOLID STATE. NOW YES YOU NEED TO MIC IT LIVE BUT THATS THE STANDARD THESE DAYS NOT MANY GOING OLD SCHOOL (NOTHING MIC'D ONLY VOCALS ON A SMALL PA, REMEMBER THE GARAGE DAYS?). I DON'T NEED ALL THE BUILT IN EFFECTS AS I HAVE MY PROCESSOR AND ALSO I DON'T TRUST THEM. TUBE AMPS GET HOT, REAL HOT. DON'T BELIEVE ME TOUCH A TUBE AFTER ITS BEEN ON A WHILE. WHAT IS THE MAIN KILLER OF PROCESSORS AND ELECTRONICS? HEAT. NOT A REAL BRAINER THERE. ALSO, IF BY SOME CHANCE MY RIG DID GO DOWN I CAN ALWAYS SHOOT STRIAGHT INTO THE BOARD. BOTH AMPS FIT IN MY CORD CASE BOX SO WHEN THE OTHER MEMBERS BRING IN THE CORD BOX WITH THE SNAKE AND CORDS ECT. WELL THERE ARE MY AMPS. AFTER THE BOX IS EMPTY I PUT 1 UP ON IT. THE OTHER GOES UP ON MY MIXER RACK TABLE. LIKE I SAID GET THEM UP AND MIC EM AND NOT ONLY WILL YOU HAVE A GREAT SOUNDING RIG BUT AFTER THE SHOW YOUR BACK WILL THANK YOU AS WELL AS BAND MATES INVOLVED IN LOADING.

This amp is the little brother to the Blues Jr. comes complete with a volume and tone control, 10 inch speaker and is about 15 watts. It has no reverb and no master volume. One input jack and a on and off switch with a pilot light so you know it's turned on! Real simple operation, if you get a little confused with all the knobs on other amps don't worry this thing adjust easly with the 2 knobs you really need.

Sound Quality : 9
I wanted a clean little amp with some volume and after owning 2 Blues Jr's found this to play cleaner at about the same volume. I guess it's because it doesn't have as much preamp gain, but it's just about as loud. I think if it had a 12 inch speaker it would sound even better and be a tad louder. Still volume isn't too bad and I can do small gigs with it, mostly 3 or 4 piece Jazz and some light Rock and Blues. Because it doesn't have reverb I use a small FX pedal and preset all my settings, reverb, distortion, tremolo, and so on... I couldn't be any easier. I think if this amp had a 12 inch speaker I'd give it a "10" because then I wouldn't feel the need for a larger amp for bigger gigs.

Reliability : 8
It was made in Mexico in 2002 and still works. When I got it, it had one mycrophonic tube in the preamp and was making that feed back sound. My Brother-In-Law who I traded a Blues Jr. for the Pro (kind of as a gift to him), had sent it to a Amp Tech to try to fix the feed back problem, who charged him $100 to replace the 2 EL84 power tubes. I tested the originals later with my tube tester and they were still in very good condition, no need to have replaced them. Yes I told him he got ripped off. Don't trust fly by night Amp Tech's, or ones that over charge. This amps seems built good for the job it was intended to do, any amp with tubes is subject to tube failure. Test and check your tubes now and then and you'll be okay.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Don't know.

Nice, no-nonsense little 15W tube amp, plenty loud for it's size, a great change from sterile sounding solid-states. Just one volume, tone control and on/off switch, no reverb. Comes stock with a 25-watt Fender speaker (manufactured by Eminence I believe) and the usual budget, standard Fender tubes installed.

Sound Quality : 8
Yes, in stock-form this amp definitely is treble-heavy, but changing out the speaker is one of the simplest things you can do to improve the sound, even before swapping out any tubes. I replaced mine with an Eminence 10-inch 50W "Lil Buddy", the stock Fender speaker which came out was only marked as 25W. It was pretty easy to do, for those of you not technically inclined, though because it is all packed in tightly I practically had to unscrew and dismantle the whole thing (not the electronics though, that stayed together in its metal 'tray' to the side). Despite that, the new speaker fit in perfectly and it all screwed back together without any other work needed. Now it sounds much fuller & balanced, and actually has some bass response (what a concept!) Great now for jazz tones with a Les Paul or classic rock/pop, and does well with Boss overdrive/dist & delay pedals for some ambient lead. Not really for metal though. The only con I have is that [ground?] hum when you turn the amp on, even before you plug your guitar in. The local guitar tech mentioned he thought it may just be the manufacturer trying to pack so much bang in a tiny little package. I haven't changed out the tubes yet to see if that may help? Anyhow, it is a fairly low-level hum that is liveable in most musical situations.

Reliability : No Opinion
Haven't had it for very long, though it is a simple amp and seems as study & reliable as any tube amp carrying 'glass bottles' inside gets. Always a good idea to have back-up, especially if you're gigging a fair distance away from home. If you have a beat-up Solid State you can leave in the trunk of your car for that one emergency situation (whenever that may be?) would be a good practice.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Have not had a reason to contact Fender yet.

Overall Rating : 8
Great sound, great value! I own 60W & 30W Roland Cubes plus a couple little Crate practice amps, but for me this is a step up in quality of tone for sensitive ears. You can hear the difference from Solid State when played side by side clean for jazz. Though close, the whole fuller, warmer tube tone thing becomes more apparent. With an overdrive pedal, the sound appears to cut through much more watt for watt than SS (those 15 watts go a long way in comparison, more like 50-60 in most SS). Got no tubes yet? Get this little gem to get started.

Features : 7
I consider the accessibility of the preamp tubes and the ease
of swapping them to be a feature for customizing the sound.
Aside from that, I like the simplicity- easier to keep my sound
dialed in while gigging.
I also consider the relatively low weight for the amount of power
a feature- I have a bad back, and I can handle this, but I couldn't
handle anything heavier.
I mostly use this amp in church, turned around facing me,
with a Behringer speaker emulated direct box to the board.

Sound Quality : 8
I've mostly used it with single coil Strats.
My current favorites are a MIM Standard with Mighty Mite Alnicos
in neck and middle, and a coil tapped Duncan Invader in the bridge,
also a mahogany bodied parts Strat with a medium hot DiMarzio DP406
Virtual Vintage in the neck position. It also sounds good with my
hardtail Strat with hot Tele-ish GFS pickups in neck and bridge,
especially in the 2 and 4 positions.
So all my neck position pickups are hotter than vintage,
and they throb nicely through the Pro Junior.
I tried a stock Pro Junior in the store with a two humbucker guitar,
and the Blues Junior did better for that since you could tweak the midrange.
The PJ suits my musical style perfectly.

Noise: it was noisy at first.
Using a quiet ECC82 JJ in v2 tamed the hiss.
Switching to JJ EL84s tamed the tube rattle due to the Sovteks.
I am using an Electroharmonix 12AX7 in v1 for a darker sound.
I have heard an all Electroharmonix set of tubes works well too.
The only tube I have found better in v1 is a JJECC803,
but I can't use it because IT rattles, maybe even especially because that tube in v1 gives a lot of nice bass, which then REALLY rattles the tube!
It would work using an external speaker though.
When I do research on tubes, I often find that a tube that rattles
has a history of those issues, like both the original and replacement
set of Sovteks I tried were from a certain vintage that had a rattle problem. And the ECC803 I read is prone to rattle as it is a long plate design. So really, not all the rattles are the PJ's fault,
but if a tube tends to rattle, the PJ's speaker being that close to them will make it happen!
I seldom get this amp above 6- too loud for my church gig or practice
I seldom use it below 3 though- no tone there to speak of.
For me, 3.5 to 5.5 is it's real useable range.
So for me, it's essentially a clean amp as it is.
The tone control is also most useful in the same range-
more than 6, and it's spikey harsh, below 3 it sounds flat and lifeless.
I seldom use it for practice anymore- too loud- I use an Epiphone Valve Junior for that. Instead, I leave the Pro Junior with it's cover on near the door ready to grab for practices and gigs- makes life easier.
The praise team leader is also an electric guitarist with a a Marshall and a humbucker guitar, though he usually plays an acoustic-
he really likes the sound I'm gettin out of the Pro Junior and my Strats.
The stock speaker was horrible. I replaced it with the cheap Italian Jensen reissue that came with my Behringer GM-110, and it was a great improvement, slightly edging out a Weber and an alnico Eminence,
which were both in turn much better than the stock speaker.

While still stock, it hated stock Tubescreamers.
It liked the TS-9DX with the enhanced bass positions better.
I modded my SD-1 and TOD-9 pedals to give them a slightly fuller sound
and they do fine with Pro Junior now.
If a pedal is midrangey or has harsh treble, it's going to give
the PJ too much of what it already has. Successful tube and speaker swaps in this amp have to add a little more bass, and sweeten the treble

It's even sensitive to cords- I use guitar cables that have quite a bit of capacitance.

I tried a B.K. Butler Tube Enhancer pedal with the Pro Junior in a store, and it sounded fantastic- great thick blues sound.
I'm currently using a tube mic preamp in front of the Pro Junior
with gain maxxed to fatten up the clean sound, and then have the
SD-1 with gain maxxed after it to stomp on for a Claptonish OD sound.

As an experiment, I put a longer screw in the top center position
of the back panel, and it hummed badly
(it creates a ground loop)- by now, most Pro Juniors should have a short screw in that position, but when replacing
the screws after removing the panel for any reason, make sure the
short screw goes in the top middle position- it's IMPORTANT!

It's probably not a good amp for someone who doesn't enjoy doing

Reliability : 7
I reviewed it 12/1/2005, and I'm still using it, still liking it.
It's never broken down, although there was once a volume fluctuation
on a hot day, possibly tube related.

I've played guitar of various kinds since I was a teenager.
Most of my electric experience has been in the last 9 years,
except for a couple years as a teenager.
My only other working amps are the previously mentioned Valve Junior,
and a Behringer GM-110 Vintager.
The Valve Junior makes a nice companion for the Pro Junior-
it give a similar sound at a lower volume for practice (same tube types, but only 1 of each,
so you can use leftover tubes from the Pro Junior in the Valve Junior.

If it were stolen or lost, I'm pretty sure I'd get another-
the combination of size, tone (once tweaked), and weight is perfect for me. A Zinky Blue Velvet is about the only amp that really compares- which isn't surprising since Bruce Zinky designed the Pro Junior when he was working for Fender!

I also like the Blues Junior- actually stock I think I liked the sound better than the Pro Junior- but it's too heavy for me, and I like
the Pro Junior's simplicity at gigs.
To me the Blues Junior sounds a little more refined than the stock Pro Junior, and I've probably been trying to get a slightly more refined sound out of the Pro Junior with the speaker and tube swaps,
and the tube mic preamp in front,
and I think I've succeeded.
I'm glad it doesn't have onboard overdrive, since Fender usually doesn't do so well with that anyway, and that would only make it heavier.

Check Fender website.

This amp is very versatile. It all depends upon what you plug into the front of it.

giving yourself boundaries for musical composition pushes you to break them. Look at Tom Morello for example using a relatively small amount of gear at any one time.

I have owned this amp for 4 days. its brilliant. just playing it with an american deluxe strat running a seymour duncan 59 in the bridge and a lil 59 in the neck.

pedals are: digitech whammy->boss tuner-> mxr phase 90->digitech bad monkey (brilliant btw)-> boss space echo (also great).

small but versatile set up. pro junior is just right and sounds fantastic FULLY STOCK.

...apart from a very high pitched resonance I can hear as the volume gets higher. Im not sure what this is? if any could shed some light on it, i would be most grateful!

Just what I needed for my live rig and for recording tube distortion! its small enough so that my live rig can be taken on the bus for christs sake! and its dead loud - definately gigable. Come on for the price its a no brainer. U want a more refined, articulate sound, spend more money but for me its great, which is the most important thing!

If you are worried that the amp may be too simple - think - giving yourself boundaries for musical composition pushes you to exceed them. Look at Tom Morello for example using a relatively small amount of gear at any one time and creating those sounds.

And most importantly, this amp is FUN!

Don't know the year it was made, but it was made in USA; I play rock but don't like a lot of distortion. It has one channel with an output jack for a separate speaker. Volume knob, tone knob, that's it. Wish it had a standby switch, but I do like the simplicity of it. Color is Blonde; has cool genuine leather handle.
I use it in the basement and bought it because it's only 20 lbs. Has plenty of power for 15 watts and easy to carry around.

Sound Quality : 10
I use it with a PRS singlecut, Gibson Nighthawk, Strat Plus, Ibanez AS120, and Les Paul Studio. When I bought it(used), the sound broke up early with distortion way too early, bass sound was flubby. And it rattled a bit at high volumes.

Here's what I did, based on reading some of the reviews:
Leather handle was in bad shape--got a brand new one on Ebay!
Got rid of the Sovtek tubes; replaced them with JJ's from Eurotubes.com. BIG improvement in overall sound. They have a very informative website.
No rattles now(I read the review where they mentioned defective Sovtek's caused the rattles--who knows)?
Anyway, the guys at Eurotubes were great...they have matched kits for this amp and many options designed for how you play and what sound you want.
Sound is great now!

Read many reviews off this site before I bought used. Seems like you at least have to change the stock tubes for a better sound. I'll take care of it and cross my fingers!

Been playing 25+ years; I also own a Blues Jr. and a Fishman Loudbox. The Pro Jr. is a good amp for the price. Like I said, you'll probably have to get better tubes like JJ's instead of Sovteks.
I don't think they make them anymore, so it's a used market now

I have owned 3 of these and the ones to get are the older ones with the blue alnico speaker. The newer ceramic speakers are to harsh and buzzy, for my tastes, you might like it better. The one I have been gigging with for over 6yrs. now is an alnico model. No features to speak of, other than TONE.

Sound Quality : 9
I play in a country/hard rock/heavy blues band and it works for most situations, just use your pick dynamics or volume on your guitar to find a range of tones. It gets one of the best Big Sugar tones this side of a cranked Marshall. These amps are LOUD for thier size but, they are small enough to crank up in most clubs to get that nice power tube saturation. Mine is usually set on 9 for both volume and tone (they go to 12). One of the best things you can do is add an extra speaker jack so you can drive an extra cabinet or two and experiment with different speaker configurations. I've sat it on top of a 4x12 and ran both the stock speaker and the cab and it sounded awesome. As with most tube amps, the quality of the tubes make a big difference. The stock tubes were OK but, after I swapped in some Tung-sol 12ax7's and Ei EL84's it sounded sooooo much better. The bass can get a little flubby at times but, tone wise, that's my only complaint.

Reliability : 9
This was my main amp for over 6yrs. until recently when I bought a Laney TT50 112. I own 7 or 8 amps at any given time and I never brought a back-up, never needed one. I never had a serious problen but, being a combo, it would rattle the tubes pretty good. In a way that was a good thing, as when the tubes would start to rattle audibly, it was a good sign that the were due for a change.

My current gigging guitars are a G&L Legacy Special, a G&L Asat Classic Custom, a Hamer Archtop Studio and a Gibson Double-cut Faded with P-90's. It sounds great no matter what you plug into it and I always get compliments about what a great tone it has. Most people can't believe that something that small sounds like it does. If it were stolen I would find another one but, with the blue speaker.

Let me start by saying I have owned 2 of these amps. One was an earlier US tweed model, the other was one of the newer Mexican tolex models.
The features are reasonable for this type of amp. Volume and Tone knobs are the only controls, but by varying the two controls you can get a decent array of sounds.
It's supposed to be a simple amp.

Sound Quality : 2
I know a lot of people like these, but i have SERIOUS issues with the sound.
I'm sure this has been mentioned before, but the tubes rattle a ton. I was able to dampen the power tube rattle by inserting rubber gromets into the holes in the provided metal stabilizer, but the preamp tubes still rattled a fair amount. This was a significant problem w/ both amps and I found it very annoying.
The other issue I had was the fact that the amp is very noisy. Even with nothing plugged in, there is a substantial amount of background "shhhhh" coming through the speaker. Again, pretty obnoxious.
Finally, the general tone of the amp.
I play a 1997 Fender '57 reissue Stratocaster with Fralin pickups. It's a nice guitar and sounds great through my '73 Pro Reverb.
The Pro Jr sounded muddy and muffled w/ any volume/tone combination. The best description I can give of the amp dimed is that it barks...you know, like a dog...
I replaced the speaker in the 1st Jr I had w/ one of the nicer Weber Alnico speakers, and the amp still sounded pretty bad.

Reliability : No Opinion
Hard for me to rate this one. They don't strike me as particularly reliable and I feel they have a lot of issues, but neither of them broke down and I think the issues are with the design. I have never gigged w/ a Pro Jr.

Never contacted Fender about this amp.

I've been playing for 14 years. I have some nice equipment and I feel like I have a good critical ear.
You're probably wondering why I tried this amp again after my first experience.
I was looking for a quiter amp to play in my apartment and, after failing to find a nice Deluxe, Champ, Princeton, etc, I found this at a guitar show for $200. It sounded fine in a room where other people were playing guitar. I guess it was too loud in there to hear the tube rattle and hiss, and since so many people rave about these amps, I decided to give it another try. I realized my mistake when I got it home...
I would not use this amp to record or gig. If you are looking for a relatively quiet amp to practice with, I would recommend something like a silverface Champ. They don't cost that much more, they're handwired, and they were made when Fender was still making decent amplifiers.
I have not been impressed with the build or sound quality of any of the recent Fender amps...It's too bad, because they used to make some really cool amps.

I got this second hand, I traded it for my Marshall JMC900 combo. My Marshall was too loud (I had to turn it way up to get some natural break up) and too heavy for my use.
The Pro Jr. has only two knobs (chicken, great look): volume and tone.
Nice and simple. The louder you go, the more break-up you get, with the first signs of break-up at about 4-5 (this depends if you use an extension cab or not). From about 8-9 you enter complete rock 'n' roll heaven. Playing with the tone, you can vary between warm and jazzy (3-4) to edgy and sharp (9-10).
I give it an 8, because I'm all for simplicity.

Sound Quality : 8
I play a Strat-like guitar (Hohner), with EMG-pickups (s-s-h). Effects: Boss ME-5, Dunlop Crybaby, Boss OD-20. I mostly play country rock, hard rock and some blues. I like my overdrive a bit rough, but I like my clean sound really "clean". Result: Fender.
I hooked it up to an 2x12" extension cab, with Celestion V30s.

Out of the box: a bit harsh. The 10" stock speaker doesn't mean much. I needed to turn the tone to about 3-4 to get some warmth out of it. Once I hooked my cab on, everything changed. Really warm tone. And loud as hell. I rehease at about 3-4 on the volume. At 5 my drummer, bass player and second guitarist start to complain.
15W is more than enough when playing small venues. You can still get enough head room for your clean sound. Just turn it up a notch to get some overdrive.

It takes my pedals really well. The OD-20 is digital, but the valve-sounds makes up for that.

Reliability : 10

My intention is to get some JJ tubes to replace the stock tubes.

Lovely little amp, but it's best to get an extension cab (or replace the stock speaker) if you want to really benefit from the warm tone. Best for blues/gritty jazz/rock, but with a good stomp box, you can get into metal as well. Remember that the valve tone will come through.

I bought it June 2008. It's new but had been sitting around the store for a year or more kind of buried behind some other amps, so I got a good deal. 15 watt tube amp. About 14"X14"X8", 20 lbs. Only 2 knobs-like my Tele. I don't mind that. I bought it for the portability feature which is why I give it 10. I think it's the perfect loudness for garage-sized jamming. I like 50's-60's-70's rock, country, blues, jazz,r&b and any thing else anyone likes to play. I can cover these sounds well with this amp.

Sound Quality : 8
I was prepared for the worst because of the mixed reviews this amp gets. The first time I tried it at the store I just grabbed some cheap Strat copy off the rack and it sounded pretty bad through this amp. I thought I'd give it another chance so I brought in my own older vintage re-issue Tele and it sounded quite good. Got it home and it still sounds good, stock speaker, tubes and all. Amp has a good clean sound but not a lot of headroom. I like the knobs set at 2-3 o'clock for a nicely overdriven sound and use the guitar for different tones. A little hiss and hum, tube sockets cheap and fussy. Don't notice this when I'm poundin' that guitar however.

Reliability : No Opinion
No break downs yet. I don't gig much any more I mostly play for fun. I think you better give the drummer some light sticks if you want to gig with this thing. I always have a backup for a paying gig. I have seen too many shows ruined by equipment failures and no backup.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I've had pretty good luck with Fender amps so I never had to contact them. The local store is authorized and stands behind what they sell. Warranty is 5 years. I have 3 vintage and 3 new Fender tube amps. Never had a serious problem but I suppose the paper caps should be replaced on the older amps.

Overall Rating : 10
I have been playing for 40+ years. I have lots of gear, all kinds new and old. I am giving it a 10 because it suits me fine for what I bought it for- an easy to carry 15 watt tube amp. I really couldn't find another tube amp of that size and power for what I paid so I would replace it.

A relatively recent purchase that does not do the Fender name justice until you follow the advice of many other reviewers. I notice someone mentioned its incompatibility with guitars like the Epiphone Casino. Well let me tell you that it all changes with just tube & speaker swapping.
Out of the box, it doesn't hold a candle to my Roland Cube 30 (not the most exotic of amps in its own right!), but with 2 x JJ AU7's, 2 x JJ EL84's and a Jensen Alnico speaker replacing the originals, it's a whole new ball-game! Pity Fender couldn't have had the foresight to do this before dumping it on an unsuspecting market, but if you've been bitten, this could be the way to go if you're looking for a 60's style Casino sound.

Out of the box I'd rate it as below, but it's definitely hovering between 9-10 now.

Sound Quality : 3
Warmoth Tele & Strat, both fitted with Kinman pickups, plus a fairly new Chinese built Epiphone Casino (See my review on this. You won't believe it until you try one!)

If you're into The Beatles, then it's not for you unless you're willing to make the quick & easy modifications.

Hellish noisy, but has improved since the JJ's were installed.

Once again, my opinion is pre-changes. 8 afterwards, mainly due to the noise.

I had to sell my Marshall 50 watter to pay my taxes. These are rough times for some of us, A friend gave me this Fender Pro Jr. and I honestly tell you that if I was in a music store I probably never would have given it a second look. When I first got the amp it was like a new machine not broken in and sounded stiff and not very sweet in the overdrive realm. I have built amps in the past so am fairly familiar with whats up. I changed tubes and that helped a lot. Then i removed the cheap plastic pots and input jack and wired in some real metal pots and input jack and that WOKE THIS BABY UP. I can honestly say that I am proud to own this little monster. There is probably alot more that can be done but I think what I have done so far is sufficient.

Reliability : 8
This is a straight forward no digital components tube amp. The only difference between this amp and one from the 50's and 60's is the Printed Circuit Board(PCB)and the ribbon cables. You will have to change tubes every now and then but other than that i cant see any reason this would not be a reliable piece of equipment.

Sounds very good for what I do with it. I knew I had to have one after watching a street busker playing some jazz on it.

It has a very warm clean thick tone that's only suitable for jazz, blues and early rock. It gives an aura that a solid state amp can't duplicate.

You're mistaken if you'll be able to do Jimi Hendrix or Jimmy Page on this. You need to get a marshall to do this. It does a good Fender style tone.

It packs too much sound into too small of cab and speaker, so you can't really turn it up past 4, but it's plenty loud at 4.

Please take all reviews with a grain of salt (including this one). I don't understand all the glowing reviews. This amp is a gimmick: small amp, big watts (relatively speaking). There is not a usable sound in there. Get a valve junior for $139 and save the rest. I tried eq pedals and other tone-shaping effects and there is literally nothing redeeming about the sound.

Reliability : 5
Everything is jammed into that small cab. Everything rattles around too much. In my opinion, there's too much power inside too small of a space. Sooner or later something will go.

Compare the size to an AC-15 or blues junior (both ~15 watts). No wonder everything shakes and buzzes. Think long and hard before being sucked in. Please don't think "it will be great to walk into a rehearsal with just a guitar in one hand and this amp in the other and blow everybody away". It ain't gonna happen. Kids will like this amp for the sheer volume it can pump out, but older guys (and gals) who like more sophisticated sounds will be sorry.

Virtually no features at all, this is a plus point for me, it allows you to choose whose reverb you want etc. There is no gain control which suits me also because I use a tubejuice attenuator power soaking device that lets you drive the whole amp, not just the pre stage. They are only $40, and you have full volume control with monster drive tones.

Also every amp I've owned has developed faults with one or more of their features eventually. This review is for a 2006 Fender Pro Junior amp chassis loaded in a Tonedog GuitarWorks Pro-Senior 1x12 combo cabinet. (www.tonedog.com) Stock Fender Pro Junior chassis loaded out with JJ tubes from Bob at Eurotubes. The combo speaker is a Weber Signature Series 12" Alnico model (not the S version). The cabinet is about the same dimensions (16.5" x 20" x 9.5") as a vintage tweed Fender Deluxe and is made of finger-jointed pine and laquered tweed. As configured, this amp weighs approximately the same as the original Pro Junior (about 20 pounds), is highly portable, and looks great. The cabinet and speaker cost $355 from Tonedog, including shipping. I picked up my Pro Junior used at Guitar Center for $180. So, the total reconfigured amp cost about $535.

Sound Quality : 10
I have an '89 Strat Plus Deluxe loaded out with Van Zandt blues single coil pickups, a '52 Reissue Fender Ash Tele, and a D'Angelico Excel, and I play anything from classic rock to jazz. I play in two bands, one of which is a classic rock band. I like a vibey, slightly hairy base clean tone and use various OD and Fuzz pedals to take it from there as needed. (The Barber Direct Drive overdrive is one of my all-time favorites.) I also use an outboard reverb pedal for spring reverb. I couldn't tell you exactly what it is, but this particular combination of amp, speaker, and cabinet (is it the pine?)is just fantastic. You get a warm, sparkling, dimensional sound at reasonable/usable volumes. A/Bing this with a Fender Deluxe Reverb Reissue, the Pro-Senior smokes it for a happening Fender clean tone at reasonable volume. And, it weight about half as much! I also have a Victoria 5112, which is similar in concept: a classic, straight-forward, low-watt tube amp (point-to-point, hand wired and made of the best components in the Victoria's case) that is housed in an expanded 1x12 pine combo format. The Pro-Senior easily rivals it and perhaps bests it. Playing in a band setting, the tone is just perfect for classic rock -- spot on!

Reliability : 10
The Pro-Senior cabinet is very well made and looks fabulous. It took all of about 10 minutes to convert my boxy little Pro Jr. over to the new cabinet -- nothing but a screwdriver required. You use the Pro Junior's screws to mount the amp -- no additional hardware required. Regarding the amp itself, the Pro Jr. is about as simple and tough an amp as you can get.

Customer Support : No Opinion
No need for it so far. Greg at Tonedog is very knowledgeable and helpful.

Overall Rating : 10
I have been playing for 20 years, and I have loved Pro Juniors for a while now -- simple, reliable, portable, and 15 watts is plenty loud. But have always wanted to run them through an extension cabinet of some sort to overcome the 10" speaker and small cabinet. The sound was good, but there was just too much stuff to lug around. When I ran across the Tonedog Pro-Senior cabinet and saw that the weight was about the same as a Pro Junior but in a high-quality, expanded, custom-fit combo format, I had to try it. The results truly exceeded my expectations. This is one of the coolest little amps I have ever played. And, it's a head-turner. For about the same total price as a new Deluxe Reverb Reissue, you can buy a new Pro Junior, convert it to a Pro-Senior, get a few good basic pedals, and be rocking out with the best of them. How cool is that?!

Not sure of the year, it's a tweed amp that was made in California, so i'd say some time in the 90s. Having read plenty of reviews knocking the factory speaker and tubes, I found one with a 10" jensen upgrade and jj tubes. So far i've only used the amp for jazz gigs with a gibson L-5 and it's done the trick very nicely. I also play a strat in a funk band but i'm guessing the drummer is too loud for the pro junior. Shame, because i can imagine it would sound great for leads when cranked. You can read about the features in all the other reviews, they fit my needs pretty well. So far i've used the amp at a number of small/medium clubs, and it has just enough power for playing jazz with a sensative drummer.

Sound Quality : 10
There's not a whole lot of variety possible with only two controls but that's not what this amp is about. I've been looking for a nice light weight tube amp that i can afford for a long time and this is it. I play jazz on an L-5 hollowbody and you can get a really beautiful clean tube sound with just a little bit of breakup with the volume on 3-4. And that's actually plenty loud for straight ahead jazz most of the time. At first it was extremely trebley and noisey too, but the amp tech i took it to fixed that. I'm a bit of a tech dunce, but I think that he cut one of the capacitors to reduce the highs, and then did that trick with the screw that i read about in many other reviews. The amp now sounds warm and dark, and it's relatively quiet; amazing for such a cheap and simple little thing! I use a EH holy grail for a bit of reverb, but actually the tone is deep and 3-D enough that you don't need reverb. I haven't gotten the chance to open it up with my strat, but i'd imagine it sounds killing for rock and blues.

Reliability : 7
It's a tube amp so there will always be some problems there but it seems very well constructed and solid. The amp tech said it had very simply circuitry and was easy to work on.

I've been playing for 20 years and i've gone through some good amps and some crap ones. I really can't say enough good things about this amp. Obviously it's not a blackface deluxe or something of that nature, but for the price, i think it's incomperable. Of course, i'm speaking after lots of modifications were done (speaker, tubes, caps), but again, for the price, you can't beat it. I don't know about the MIM models but this one sounds really, really good, and it's very loud for 15W. Add to that that it only weighs a little over 20 lbs (i don't drive so that's a big help), and it looks really cool (tweed's much more stylish than the black tolex). Highly recommended.

I got a tweed one of these a while back. it is a cool basic little amp that is loud. I bought to for playing harp and some low volume guitar. One can see that this is a lain little amp.

I like other reviewers have had trouble with this amp unlike an amp trouble I've had before. Once the amp is warmed up (fifteens minutes after being turned on) it has a variety of terrible noisiness happening. I haven't been able to pinpoint the trouble yet. I tend to give up and grab my princeton.

Fantastic round harmonic tone. You don't need a ton of goofy features when an amp sounds this good. You don't need to put mustard on lobster.

Sound Quality : 10
If you play this amp with the volume set at 1 to 4; the amp is clear and round as a bell.

If you play the amp with the volume set at 4 to 7; the amp breaks up and has a great edge.

If you play the amp with the volume set at 7 plus; you have rock and roll heaven.

I went into a guitar shop with $450 cash. I was going to buy a Blues Junior for recording and practicing at home. Just for fun, I tried the Pro Junior and I couldn't buy the Blues Junior despite the pregain and reverb on the Blues Junior. I have a 70's Silverface Champ and the Pro Junior was like my Champ on steroids. The tone of the Pro Junior made the Blues Junior sound terrible. The rolling tube harmonics from the Pro Junior are amazing.

Reliability : 10
My tube sockets went bad at 2 months. The amp starting crackling and groaning. I took the amp to a local Fender dealer that does tube repairs. They replaced the sockets and gave my new sovtek tunes...no charge. This was the first time that I used a Fender amp warrantee. The process was smooth and easy.

The amp has been perfect for 10 months (since the repair).

I'm giving this a 10 because Fender exceeded my expectations through great warrantee support.

I have the Pro Junior, a 70's Champ, an Epi Valve Junior with a Lopo 1-12 cab and a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe....the Pro Junior is my favorite amp.

You cannot get a bad sound from this amp. I bought a Marshall Reflector reverb pedal to add reverb which may be insane (adding a $125 pedal to a $300 amp) but I love the little rig. I play a Strat, Tele, PRS humbucker guitar and a PRS P-90 guitar through this amp for recording. It's a joy.

The sound that comes this thing makes is by far the best out of any other amps I have played. The natural distortion you get at the higher volumes makes my Boss distortion pedal a waste of money but when your not trying to shatter windows a pedal doesnt hurt and mine compiments this amp nicely.
If your playing it clean, if your guitar has any kind of sound in it, this amp will bring it out.

I got it at Guitar Center, it comes with a 30 day warranty, you can buy a 2 year extended warranty for 20 extra bucks. it only costs 340 but if you get some extras to add up to 500 you dont have to pay for a year (thats after u apply for their credit card and get approved for that amount but if i got approved anyone can)

On/Off switch, input jack, volume and tone. A few tubes and a speaker. No effects loop, no reverb, no multiple channels. This thing is about as stripped down as you can get for features. If you're in the market for an amp with all the bells and whistles, get a Line6 or a Cyber Twin.

Sound Quality : 9
The best thing about this amp is that it passed the Wife Test. Straight out of the box, I plugged it in and strummed a chord and my wife said "Wow, that amp has a lot of character." It's kind of bright, but it really lights up my guitars (fender strat with texas specials and epi sheraton with alan holdsworth pickups), it plays VERY well with my myriad of pedals, and it breaks up nice.

The amp is loud, but it doesn't have as much clean headroom as some. But then again, you don't get a low-wattage tube amp for clean headroom. I'll be playing this mostly at my church and a few other gigs, and even though I'll mic it, I really don't need to.

There's a lot of talk about noise, but it doesn't sound any worse for noise than some other tube amps I've played through. I suppose I could embark on a quest for the perfect sound by swapping out tubes and speakers, or I could just play more. I think I'll take option 2. I'm knocking 1/2 point for the noise (though it is acceptable) and 1/2 point on sheer principle that with amps out there costing ten times as much, this can't possibly be the best amp ever.

Reliability : 8
It's surface-mount technology and cheaper components, but if you take care of it, it'll be fine. I always gig with a Johnson J Station in my rig, just in case an amp would be too loud or I need a backup, but I would be comfortable gigging with this without a backup.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I paid a little extra to buy it from a local music store. I wouldn't even consider customer support from Fender, I'd just go back to my store. I do a lot of business there and they take care of their customers. I have no opinion about Fender, but am 100% confident in my local store. Whatever money you'll save from the big-box stores and websites, you'll pay extra for the first time you need a real person to look at it.

I've been playing for about 16 years. Currently I play in our church's praise band which amounts to plenty of different styles. This amp will work for them all. For $300 or so, this amp can't be beat.

It has just the features I wanted, volume and tone. It also has VOLUME and TONE, so to speak. This is a neat little 15W tube amp with 2 EL84s, very loud with the tube/speaker upgrades. Small and light, perfect for small-medium rooms.

Sound Quality : 7
I use a mongrel Strat with SSH pickups (VanZandt and TB14). Out of the box, these amps are very bright and ice-picky. Volume takes you from clean to a kind of barking crunch above noon on the dial. Not a lot of bass. I had the Tone on 9 o'clock. Still, not a bad sound for an inexpensive amp. First, I replaced all the tubes with JJs. I got a balanced 12AX7A for the phase inverter, a hot 12AX7A for V1, and a balanced set of EL84s. I replaced the speaker with a 10A125-O Weber upon the recommendation of Ted Weber. The amp was instantly louder and less spikey, and smoothed out a little after break-in, but still too bright. It had more bass, and broke up a little sooner. I got a Beam Blocker from Weber and that turned my amp into a little monster. The little soft dome in the center of the Beam Blocker apparently soaks up some highs, because the amp sounds much warmer and smoother, and has no obvious spikey highs on axis. I put the tone on 11 o'clock now. I'm giving it a 7 because it's very good for what it is, but not an AC30 or Matchless eater.

Reliability : 8
Tube amps are inherently vulnerable to problems such as rough handling, blown fuses, tubes and transformers. The only tube amp that ever stranded me live was my old Marshall Plexi 100 from the day. I expect this amp to be very reliable with proper handling.

Never had to deal with Fender personally, but there seems to be a mixed bag of great/hideous experiences. I have a local tech that can work on it for me or I might fix it myself, so who cares.

Overall Rating : 8
Played too long, bought too much stuff. This is a great small gig/recording/teaching amp as it is now. I would definitely replace if stolen. It would be nice to have this amp with a 12 and reverb, but I would just get the Blues Jr, which I like less. This thing screams live with my Keeley mod OD9/Soul Bender/Tube Zone dirt pedals. I get a great crunch sound, an almost-Marshall sound with the Tube Zone, and good fuzz buzz. The clean sound to me is a little flat and weak.

Volume and tone. As I only play clean this is all I need. So far I've just used this at practice and jamming with friends at home but I'd easily gig with it (no drummer, but I'd mic it up anyway).

Sound Quality : 9
This amp brings my American series Strat into full sparkling life with strong mids and surprisingly punchy lows. It also loves my Danelectro DC 12 string, delivering lots o' jangly goodness. It is, however, not quite bright enough for my Casino and a dead loss with the low output mini humbuckers on my Gretsch cannot be persuaded to twang without a lot extra help from a pedal. So, this is a single-coil-preferred amp from the ground up. That opinion would probably change if I overdrove it.

For my strat and the 12 string I keep the tone at a notch past 1/2 way and luxuriate in the richness of tone. For the other ones it's my solid state Vox with or without pedals.

Before I bought it I would play through the flat channel on a borrowed Fender Deluxe Reverb and eventually found I prefered the natural ring of the strat without extra reverb. I can't say this of all my instruments but the strat now sounds best to me when using the room itself for reverb. As soon as I tried the Pro Junior and liked the sound I decided it was the way to go.

The 9 is q qualified best as overdrive is completely absent from my playing and it is a reason why many people would choose this amp. As a clean amp, it's a winner.

Haven't dealt with them but didn't need to as I was able to solve my problem with the amp through reading (including here at Harmony Central). See below for details.

Overall Rating : 8
Been playing for a few decades now and have settled on the way I like my guitar playing to sound. I like the Pro Junior for the same reason I like the strat, it's plain but it's beautifully plain. If I were separated from it I would either get another one or maybe consider a Blues Junior for the extra eq so my other guitars wouldn't feel left out. Because of that last point I give it an overall 8.

It's an 8 rather than a 9 or 10, also because of the noise problem. In the shop it just sounded a little buzzy (and I *was* playing a Strat through it) but when I got it home and turned it on it buzzed like a power tool before anything was plugged in (or the volume turned up). A little reading had me try the screw at the back but without success, and then I tried new valves. The first one I changed was the 12ax7 in the first position which reduced the humm to acceptable levels. I could have left it at that but I went further and now the hum and hiss are virtually unnoticeable. My configuration is: V1 12AY7 V2 12AU7 and two JJ EL84s. It now plays like a dream but I had to do a fair bit of work to get it there.

Still, it's a perfect companion for my Strat and that, very like the effect of sunshine on my shoulder, makes me happy.

This [my] amp is the holy grail. Mine has a new Jensen P10R and all EH tubes. It gets into early breakup at 6 on the volume. I bought it as-is so I didn't hear it with the stock speaker and tubes. Obviously if it was good they wouldn't have made the changes, so with this setup it is sweet, sweet. No rattles, buzzes, hum, just '59 Bassman tones without the high volume. (I have two 59 Bassmans, one point to point, Mercury transfomers, the works.) I hate to say which amps are supposed to sound this good and don't, but then, is your guitar putting out any tone? If you have five Fender Strats exactly the same, one or two of them will be dull and toneless. This is my experience. For pure guitar tone, this amp, with the mods, is hard to beat.

I am in my 50's (not in THE 50's). I realize that great tone starts with the player, then goes through a great toneful piece of wood guitar, then to an amp. If one of the first two are missing, a great tube amp can make it up some but not enough to get to heaven.

Volume and tone. You really don't need anything else in this type of amp, and no amount of features could save this thing anyway. Keep reading . . .

Sound Quality : 1
Horrible, brittle, buzzy, sterile, and harsh, all with a horrible hum. The reviews that talk about great bluesy sound must never have heard a tweed champ. The Pro Jr is all about volume. You'll be surprised at how loud such a small amp can be (just a little bigger than a tweed champ), but sheer volume alone is nothing to be proud of. I tried different tubes, an eq, different guitars, all with the same harsh sound. People can mistake that harshness for a good "nasty" sound, but it isn't the same. Even cranked loud this amp sounds small.

Reliability : 6
Never crapped out on me, but the tubes are almost touching the back of the speaker and the power tube holder rattles like heck, as does the cabinet. I had a feeling that sooner or later, with regular playing, it would have broken down.

I had to dump the thing, I could not stand the sound. To those who think different, grab a tweed champ or a bassman and try those. I realize it's comparing apples to oranges, but I have a tweed champ and a bassman. They are completely different, you really can't compare the two as far as sound, volume, etc, but both still sound awesome in their own right. The Pro Junior doesn't have a good sound, that's the comparison I'm making. Save a few more bucks and get a tweed champ or a deluxe reverb. Do you really think you'll get a nice, full sound out of a 10 inch speaker jammed into a crappy 14 inch box???

Amp was a 2006 model, Single 10 speaker, one channel, one volume and one tone knob. 15 watts (Tubed), loud for 15 watts with a 10 inch speaker, clean to overdrive sounds are obtained by cranking the volume. I bought it for worship music with a semi clean sound in mind, I planned on mic'ing it and did not want to blow the choir off of the stage, so low power was desired. Not much else for features but that is how I wanted it.

Sound Quality : 8
The sound was great for the price! Total blues and rock sounds were available, I think it might be the best sounding amp I have heard for the price! Cleans were warm and there was plenty of treble. I used humbuckers with it exclusively. Tube rectifier would probably improve the sound a bit but the design is intended to be economical to produce and a tube rectifier would add cost to manufacturing. I have heard better 15 watt combos (Dr. Z, Matchless, and Vox come to mind) but they cost way more than this amp.

Reliability : 1
Here is where the problem was with my amp. I had it for six days, the first five days it worked and sounded great. On day six something came loose inside and the sound became horrible, very distorted but not in the good way. Very fuzzy, plus whatever came loose was rattling around in the chasis of the amp with every hit of my A string, A very loud rattle at that.

Didn't even call Fender, I didn't want to go through the hassle mailing it to them and I didn't want a replacement from the store, I returned it to Guitar Center and they took it back with no questions asked.

Overall, it is a surprisingly versatile and loud amp for what it has to offer. It is definitely an "idiot proof" amp when it comes to setting up--volume, tone, on/off toggle, red light. Knowing the nuances of tone from your guitar--the pots particularly--is very important with this amp though. I bought this amp slightly used; it's made in Mexico. I live in Canada and paid $320 CAN. It is in almost mint condition.

Sound Quality : 9
The amp is LOUD and CLEAR! Mine was, unfortunately, very noisy when I tried it at home--very loud hiss and hum. I was quite disappointed. I took it back to the retailer's repairman who resoldered the tube sockets and capacitors. He also put in two new Sovtek output tubes. What a difference! Everything was covered by warranty (even as a used item) except the tubes. So, the repair cost me $24--so, $344 CAN total for this amp. (A new one in Canada is about $400.) It runs very quietly now and sounds just awesome. I also own a Fender Blues Junior, a Marshall JTM 30, and a Vox AC 15 (made in China)--they are all good amps. On the floor, I use just a Boss DD3 and a Vox Bulldog distortion--simple and effective. I keep the volume quite low (at almost 3) and the tone at about 5 or 6, depending on the guitar. While I haven't tried every electric in my collection through the PJ, I was really sold on how good my Teles and Strats sound. Les Paul--OK to good. PRS--yet to try...The real killer sound that blew me away was my Rickenbacker 360/6 string. WOW!! (Words cannot do justice here.) If you can, try this amp with a Ricky and you'll swear you hear choruses of angels. Frankly, I don't miss the reverb at all. I used this amp in church last Sunday with a Tele, DD3 and the Vox Bulldog and it worked very well--I could really hear myself without being too loud for any other players and singers. Overall, it's a really great sounding amp once you get rid of the loud hiss and hum.

Reliability : 7
It's rather soon to tell, but I have a feeling you need spare output tubes with this one.

Customer Support : 10
It was the (Fender Authorized) repairman at the retailer that really solved the noise issues. Thanks Bob!! (I'm giving you a 10!) Resoldering by hand is the way to go!

I've been playing for 32 years--rock, blues, jazz, country, bluegrass, and gospel. I've rented, owned and borrowed lots of amps over the years. My favourite amps would have to be any of the Fender Deluxe Reverbs and Super Reverbs that I've tried. I really like the amps I own now, and the Pro Jr. is a very welcome addition to the family. It sounds great, you don't strain your hand carrying it, it fits behind your car seat, and it looks like an old Champ from 1964. I might try the tube and speaker upgrade, but since the repair, I'm very satisfied with this product....A+

1995, first run of this amp -- made in Brea, CA, Fenderland USA, not any of the misc. offshore places Fender farms work out to these days. Cost $200 in '95 and a ridiculous steal at that price. The Pro Jr is a two-knob wonder (tone, vol.) though actually very wide-ranging in tonal output depending on what and how you play, effects, etc. One channel. On-off switch (no standby, sorry). 2 EL84s, for 15 watts, but remarkably loud and giggable. Very well made for an inexpensive amp; don't know if the quality persists in non-USA, later versions.

Sound Quality : 9
Here's the deal: the Pro Jr gets widespread kudos, from me too, stock -- it's chimey, throaty, bouncy and clear, or biting when revved up. But -- and this is a huge but -- the PJ can be ramped up from "good" to "what the #$%&!" tone heaven with a few simple upgrades. The stock speaker is terrible, and should be replaced w/ a Jensen P10R alnico (fits, but you can't use the bell, which is cosmetic anyway) which I did, or a Weber 10, which would be even better. Huge, instant improvement: the little guy roars, goes deep. Next: replace the crap tubes. I think mine came w/ Groove Tubes, which sounded hard, noisy, and sharp. Use a 12AU7 or 5751 in V1 to tame the nutty over-the-top hotness, and any quiet 12AXZ in V2. Get some good, basic EL84s. The tube swaps will give a much better curve to the preamped gain, and the better power tubes will sing instead of shriek. And finally, do the "C2" mod reported on the web. It's a simple cap removal, takes 3 sec., and eliminates a nutty sort-of "treble bleed/bypass" deal that originally sends much treble right past the tone control. Since the PJ has a 10 incher to begin with, and is inherently hyper-trebly by design, you get a much better tonal range with the bypass cut out. With these very easy changes -- and don't fret the speaker cost, as the crap OEM Eminence will fry itself early on anyway -- you end up with an amazing little amp. The PJ is irritatingly noisy and tube-sensitive, so hang in there with the tube swaps until you find the right uniuts for yours. I did, and mine went from its very hummy, noisy original state to a nice quiet little dude.

Reliability : 10
My original speaker blew early on, which is a disgrace in a 15 watt amp never run over half volume! Fortunately, this led me to make a replacement that opened up the amp's otherwise-lost potential, so OK. Other than that, and having to get rid of crappy tubes, it's been faultless. I'm giving it a 10 because Febder made neither the tubes nor the speaker. I give Eminence a 1, and Groove tubes a 5.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Fender... are you kidding? I had no dealings with "Fender." My local shop was nice.

Overall Rating : No Opinion
Played forever, have gone through all kinds of top-end (and crap) equipment. Even among the high-priced, fashionable poser stuff, I return to the PJ because it just freaking works. Easily portable, and it simply sounds great. Obviously, it cannot and will not do "recto" (though it will reproduce an effected version of that tone; it won't create it) and @ 15 watts and a 10 incher, it's not going to pump or shudder. But it's really great to hear. I would absolutely replace it, though I don't know if these CA originals differ from the mass of newer PJs.

Hey, "twangy mctwanger" (and others)!
You write that you're "often tempted to sketch out the circuit for this amp and copy it from scratch with higher quality components ".
Have a look at http://www.dreamtone.org/PJ.htm. He's done just that and turned the PJ into a tube recto point to point amp. If you're just reasonably skilled at DIY:ing you should be able to follow his circuit and make one for yourself. With good iron, good components, good tubes and a good speaker it ought to sound, well, down right good.

First issue (about 1996), made in USA and bought new by me for about 200 bucks... the good old days. Features? What features? Tone and volume knobs. Oh, yeah -- also, on/off switch. Supposedly designed so that high volumes are increasingly crunchy and less clean; essentially, a one-tone, "sweet spot" amp, with any tonal extremes best accomplished outboard with pedals. The "1" rating here is not a criticism: control is "very limited" (=1) on purpose. If you want channel switching, etc., go away.

Sound Quality : 8
This is a beautiful-sounding amp, as noted in many reviews, IF (if, if, if, etc.) you come up with the right set of pre-amp and power tubes. the stock tubes can be junky, microphonic, rattly, and just plain lousy-sounding, but if you spend some time swapping others in and out, as I did, you can eventually find a combination that is reasonably quiet (notorious noise problems in Pro Juniors!) and absolutely gorgeous tonally. I found that many terrific tubes (NOS $$$ stuff) that sound great in other amps can sound like crap in the PJ. Some of the 12AX swaps (to AU, say, or others) have worked for me too, as others describe, and sometimes the calmed-down preamp stage works wonderfully. Also, the stock Fender speaker is adequate at best (mine sounded OK), but swapping to a Weber alnico was a freaking revelation! With the right tubes and a good speaker, the amp is just great. Maybe a 6 rating stock, and a 10 now.

Reliability : 5
The stock tubes and speaker are crap. Consider it a gift from the tone gods when they fail, as decent replacements will result in massive improvement. Changing tubes on this guy is a dice roll. Be prepared to try lots of combinations, as even some reputable makes will still sound lousy in this circuit. It's a very noisy amp that brings out the worst in most tubes, though the right combination is is magical. But the quest for such a setup is about as challenging as the Holy Grail. Trial and error... with emphasis on both "trial" and "error."

I'm often tempted to sketch out the circuit for this amp and copy it from scratch with higher quality components (tube sockets, etc. are cheap-o).

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never needed help from Fender... because I was tossing out OEM components for better aftermarket stuff.

I've played forever, tried everything. I'm not rich, so even though I go through loads of gear, I only keep what works, and this little bastard has survived with me for a long time now simply because it sounds better than other units that have come and go from my collection. for instance, I had a lovely and small Top Hat that was in every way very fine, but the junior was the one everyone gravitated towards. It's the uncool, cheapy amp you don't want to like, but can't resist because it performs. I play a custom shop Strat, a McNaught, a PRS, and misc. vintage (Firebird, Tele) and use anything from zero effects to long chains, and the PJ works well with all. I gigged it a lot, and it's pretty loud -- often able to handle club-sized venues at volume -- once the P.O.S. original speaker was changed.

This amp was made in 2001. When I bought it, it had been modified. It's been boosted to 18 watts, and has an Emminence Patriot Copperhead speaker. In and of itself, it is not very versatile, but with a decent multieffects unit, it's great. It is 15 watts, and has a ten inch speaker. It has one channel, and one tone knob....that's it! I have played for 20+ years, and my preference is for a one channel amp with a killer clean tone. I have gigged with this connected to a Peavey 4x10.

Sound Quality : 10
KILLER clean tone. With the volume set at 7, it starts to compress and distort with a bluesy type of distortion. With the volume at 12, it has a really nice, thick, midrangey classic rock type of distortion. It cleans up very well with my Yamaha guitar when I turn the volume knob on the guitar down. It's a tube amp.....so it is noisy, but no more noisy than any other. My guitar has a P.A.F. style humbucker and two fender single coils....I'm sure these type of pickups are what they had in mind when they made this amp.

Reliability : 9
I would never give a tube amp a ten, because tubes can blow at the most inopportune times. this particular amp has never given me any trouble. I have gigged with this at a couple of blues gigs, connected to a Peavey 4x10 speaker cab.

Customer Support : 9
I live in Atlanta, so I never have any problem finding a service center.

Overall Rating : 10
I have been playing 20+ years. I also have a Peavey Classic 50, and a Peavey 4x10 extension cabinet. I use Yamaha and Fender guitars. If this was stolen, I would buy another in a heartbeat. I compared this to a low watt, tube Crate, and an Ampeg. No comparison in my book!

I think this thing is cool.
No frills, sounds like my Tele wants to....and, when you crank it, it SINGS!!

I've read the other reviews on this site, and have experienced none of the hum and noise problems they refer to.

No reliability issues, and although I do use it gigging, I wouldn't use it without a back-up - after all, we are talking Fender mass-production.

I bought it new in the mid '90, so it's still the old American one...
A lot of people told me that the new Mex amps are really different so don't use my review as an excuse with your mother if you want to buy it...

I play an Ibanez RG2120 Prestige. Strange guitar to be paired with that kind of amps...

Out of the box isn't the best I've ever seen... It's a shame that there's no gain control on this little beast... In fact you can only get clean sounds at a very low volume. Even working with the guitar knobs isn't enough with my Ibanez RG2120 Prestige... The tone knob is really useless, just because turning volume up to 3 makes the sound dirty and compressed, loosing a lot of presence...

Sound Quality : 10
I think that giving a soul to a guitar that doesn't have it is a painful operation... But this little beast does it's hard work very well... After a lot of years with the same old used out of the box cheap valves, when my friends listen to my demoCD ask me how is it possible to have a sound like that...
Even the constant hum that someone find's terrible is kind of music to my ears, so I don't need to eliminate it. Also I won't lower the rating because of that. But if you like "plastic" sounds without any rust and dust feel, please don't buy is and save your money for cosmetics... I personally prefer the feeling to pure sound. Pure is something I like to say about something else than electric guitars sound...

I fell in love with this amp from the first time...
It was my companion when I played prog-rock and even now that I'm interested in jazz it will remain with me...
Forever...

Reliability : 8
The day after I bought it I had to get it back to change a valve that was broken.
Since then no other "surgery" needed...
I'm very happy

Customer Support : No Opinion
As I told you before I have no elements to write anything here...

Overall Rating : 8
Not 10 just because it doesn't have that damned gain knob... And believe me when I say that there's absolutely no proportion between volume and drive...
But I love it so much that I can live without any clean sound...
It's a box full of taste and old flavors people need to hear still today, in the amp-modelling era...
Nothing sounds like a small combo, no one sounds like that little beast...

As for the weird fuzzy honk mentioned in the review below, I have had what I believe to be the same fuzzy honk in my pro jr, though when playing harmonica. At certain notes (relatively low notes when playing at higher volumes), there is an "extra" tone overlaying the actual, played tone.
When asking my amp tech about this, his explanation was that it was probably caused by too small filter capacitors. Due to interference, an extra tone is either added or subtracted from the tone that you play, thus causing those "ghost" tones. He also said that this is a known problem with some older Vox AC30:s and that the latest AC30 reissues therefore have a switch on the back panel to chose between more or less (original) filtering.
The problem can be solved by soldering an extra pair of 22uf/500V capacitors (just like the grey ones already in there) parallel to the two caps sitting there.
To test whether or not it is the speaker causing the problem, try connecting the amp to an external spkr cabinet and see if you get the same fuzzy honk.

One Channel, Volume + Tone, each going to ??12??. One 10" Eminence speaker. 2x12AX7 valves in preamp, 2xEL84s in the power amp. 8Ohm output. No standby switch.

Sound Quality : 10
Most guitarists would understand the limitations of this combo when buying into it. I play modern blues on a strat and for my style, it does two things well: a pure clean tone at low volumes, and an overdriven tone when the amp is pushed past the halfway mark. I couldn??t give an opinion on the sound of humbuckers through this amp. In my experience, the 10" speaker sounds excellent in one??s bedroom, studio or at low volume rehearsals, but when asked to fill even a small room at gigs it gets too nasally, the sound loses it??s balance and becomes thick and ugly. I recently tried connecting a cabinet with an 8Ohm Celestion Vintage 30 at a gig and it sounded good, but the amp wasn??t loud enough. To be fair, it??s asking a lot of a 15watt amp to get over a strong drummer. There??s always the option of sticking an SM57 in front of the speaker! One odd characteristic: when I have the amp cranked into distortion and bend a note on the 1st string, 15th fret up a tone, there is a weird ??fuzzy honk??. It may be the speaker, I don??t know.

Reliability : 10
I certainly have confidence in this product. Sometimes it hums quite loudly, but that has been down to faulty tubes.

Customer Support : 9
I??ve owned mine for three years and never needed to visit the repairman.

Overall Rating : 9
I chose this amp because I wanted to learn how to play an amp like I??ve learned to play the guitar - as an instrument. It??s good to have that valve tone in your house at your fingertips. I recommend it. It??s a fun little amp!

For small venues the PJ is my first choice. I play a variety of everything from reggae to rock. Breaks up at around 5 which is the volume i play at. I love the sound of this little thing with my telecaster through a Rat, dd-3 and a home made clean boost. Its all i need most of the time.

Got a 1992 tweed off the bay. It's got too many features if you ask me. Who needs a tone control? It's the ultimate in versatility, which may seem like an oxymoron: an amp with one volume and one tone control being versatile? Read more below.

Sound Quality : 10
First I must address the awful hum that plagued this amp (and other pj's from what I have read and witnessed). Very loud hum/hiss. Thought I got taken. Went to the local guitar center and guess what, their brand new pj had the same thing. Read some forum stuff and came up with a potential solution: 12AX7 WC's. I also know that you can sub 12AY7's for a slight decrease in output power. Got matched pair of each. The WC's only helped slightly. The AY's helped a lot. The amp is now useable. Some people may not like that solution though. The output decreases and hence the overdrive. I solve that by kicking in the tubescreamer when needed, so I have the best of both worlds. Clean & quiet and overdrive. I a/b'd it with my blackface Champ and it is only slightly less clean but I don't think I would have noticed it if it were not an a/b, one right after the other and back type test. The pj volume at about 5 was roughly the same as the Champ volume on about 9.

A little more on the AX/AY switch. With AX7's, the pj was very aggressive. Even at volume of 3-4 it screamed and was very rough and dirty. Cool for some situations, but if you need some clean at higher volumes, it just wasn't there, so like I said about, you sacrifice some output, but for me, there is a much more useable range of volumes there.

A little more on versatility mentioned above. It's so versatile because you can stick with the amp's overdrive or you can use an od pedal or a fuzz or whatever. It accepts everything well and doesn't get all muddied up. Also, you can tell what you're playing through the pj, whether single coil, humbucker or otherwise. it doesn't all get lost in the mix like with some (mainly non-Fender) amps I have used. So the versatility is all up to you. If you want to play country, it's there. So is blues, rock, etc. With the AX7 in there, I think it would be plenty loud to practice with all but the most aggressive drummers

Reliability : 10
It's held up since 1992 in the hands of god knows who before me, but it seems to have been well maintained. I would depend on it without asecond thought.

Nowadays all the young'ns are all about loud, loud, loud. "100 watt Marshall stacks, hang those who talk of less!" I get the sweetest sound out of my 6 watt champ and this 15 watt pj. I can basically walk into practice carrying a guitar case and this amp and be ready to go. I'd probably take some effects if it was a gig, but I'd have no problem going clean (but would probably put the AX's back in if I did). I was looking for an amp that was louder than my Champ and that I wouldn't worry about taking out of the house. The Champ is 1967 (older than me, but not by much) and it's almost mint, so that ain't gonna see the outdoors. So I've got a pint sized screamer for under 4 bills. When 15 watts isn't enough, I've got the 59 Bassman RI, so with 3 amps I'm pretty well covered and that's what it's all about: not breaking the bank to get what you need. Compare it to the other amps in the 15 watt range, and you won't beat the Pro Junior

Volume and treble knob. Simple as I like it.

Sound is great. Starts breaking up on 3, than goes to british tone.
It's loud for gigs, I don't need to go over 4. Also cuts through mix very well and takes vintage effects without problems.

Reliability : 1
Great sound but it's build like a $2 tin can. Seems they've tried to cut every corner they could to make as money as possible on this amp.
Chassis is made of such thin sheet metal it vibrates like crazy. Along with it vibrates the rear cover. Feels like my wife's vibrator when you touch it and play the amp loud. This send all the tube nuts and they vibrate like nuts. New tubes last about a week than they get all loose and rattle like nothing else I've ever heard. I've got two Juniors and are both exactly the same.
Fender is trying to sell this amp as the old Champ. What a load of crap. I've got an old champ and rattle what so ever. They used to build them well cheap bastards. This amp isn't cheap either for it's quality.
I'g got many mates who also got this amp and all have same noise problems.
There is a way to fix it to a degree which is what I did. The chasis needs another piece if sheet metal bolten over it, the rear cover needs metal plate across the overhangin bottom of it to stop it from virtually flapping around from the wind the speaker causes.
Tube sockets need to be replaced and attached to chassis. And off course with all this you'll need new tubes because the old ones are to shaken up. That this amp works ok but is it worth all the trouble? By the way using the amps 2x a week, the tubes only last one year. This amp eats tubes.

Customer Support : 1
After a three months owning these new two amps Fender was telling me the noises are bad tubes but the warranty don't cover them. Load of crap. The amp destroys the tubes it's not bad tubes.

2005 Pro Junior. (Slightly hot rodded) 15 watts, one 10 inch Fender speaker. Volume knob, tone knob. Nothing fancy but it works. Yes it hums just sitting there.
I ordered some JJ/Tesla EL84s but they came broken, and Sovtek 12AX7LPS.
Was told at Tube Depot these will do the magic. Will have to see later.
I also got from them a Celesion Vintage G10 inch speaker. Its easy to see this is a lot better quality speaker than the Fender side by side. Heavier also.

Gibson Les Paul Jr.(new model)with one P90. And a (05)Gibson 135 with two P90s. The LP Jr. like the amp is no frills. Gets a basic good rock sound. However the 135 does everything in this amp. Jazzy low volume, nice break up halfway, and you'd swear it was plugged in to a Tube Screamer at 7 and 7 on the amp.
I did a trial run with the Fender speaker then replaced it with the Celestion at the same amp settings and stock tubes. The Celesion has better low volume tone and punch, and cranked up on the guitar it breaks up killer. The Fender speaker gets muddy and very early. Lots of distortion mind you but mud compared to the Celesions breakup sound. Now take this puppy to a blues jam. The best 85 bucks you can put in this amp. I was going to consider hacking a 12 inch speaker in the amp but no need to now.

This amp is as basic as you can get. Tone and volume. If you cant figure ot how to operate it you need to stop huffing paint.

This amp is a mixed bag. On lower volumes the clean tone is junky and thin. Cranked past the halfway mark and this amp gets a really cool tube distortion that is totally unique. It's has an incredible overdrive tone and it's extremely full. This amp is really loud for it's size!!! The amp is prone to massive feedback. So, even gated it does have some problems. I would not recomend this amp to someone who lives in an apartment becasue you really have to crank it before it sounds good.

New, 2006 Fender Pro Junior, made in Mexico. No real features to speak of, volume & tone controls only & 1 input; 1x10 speaker, 15 watts...all tube, 2-power, 2 preamp. I have the blonde version.

Sound Quality : 4
I use this amp for blues harp. I also own it's big-brother, '59 Fender Bassman Reissue, but needed something smaller & more portable for practice sessions and smaller jams & gigs. Read some great stuff about the pro jr. for harp, so I purchased one.

As harp-players know, you can't play this out-of-the-box...will feedback at like 1.5! Need to replace both preamp AX7 tubes with lower gain AU7 tubes. I used RCA NOS in the preamp, and you also need to make sure the power-tubes (they come with sovtek/fender EL84's) are as low-gain as possible. When I tried the JJ EL84's (which I thought would be am upgrade), they sounded thinner & terrible. Usually not a big sovtek fan for harp, but in this amp they sounded much better!

Anyhow, even with these tube mods, the amp will feedback around 6 (depending on my mic). I usually set the tone control on about 2.

The PROBLEM with this amp is this volume-level feedback threshold happens BEFORE you can reach the nice crunchy pre-amp overload sound that us harp-types are usually striving for!! The tone is just too thin on this amp & the amp is way-too hot for harp. It's even much hotter than my big bassman reissue!! The feedback ia an extra bitch to deal with. In order to obtain the deep, thick, gritty, chicago-blues, overdriven sound I was looking for (and expecting) I had to add
an attenuator (I use the THD 8ohm 'hot-plate"). This allows me to get the tube-overdriven sound I want without feedback, and without having to blast the volume to room-shattering levels (the amp is a VERY loud 15 watts!).

So good news, I finally achieved my sound from the Pro Junior, bad news; it took too much time, effort, and extra cost to do so (amp $250, tubes $40, attenuator $230...total cost = $520!). Not such an inexpensive little harp-amp after all!

Very disappointing amp for harp use! I do NOT recommend it!

Maybe the older ones are better...otherwise; I have no clue how this amp ever got such a good reputation for harp use! Just way too hot and thin-sounding for harp. In my opinion, it's totally a guitarist amp, harp players needing a small amp would do much better with a an old Fender Champ, Silvertone, Premier, Masco, or something else that will actually CRUNCH without so much assistance!

Word to the wise...!

Blonde Pro Junior. Bought new mail order in Dec. 2005. On/Off switch, really cheap plastic input jack. volume and tone control. Any amp needs more than a single tone control!

Sound Quality : 5
This thing has a really crappy speaker and has no tone what so ever!!! You had better really like the tone this thing produces because thats all there is! It has a really nasty 60 cycle HUM which is most likely the tube heater. Yes I have changed tubes (twice) they sound ok in my friends Blues Junior so I know it is the amp itself. Yes I removed the middle screw (it didn't help). I purchased a Boss E.Q. pedal, and changed the speaker to an Eminence Rajun Cajun which makes the tone tolerable. I guess that since I had to spend $200 on an EQ pedal a decent speaker and new tubes I should have just spent the money on a better sounding amp.
I have listened to other pro juniors they all seem to have the HUM.

Reliability : 5
This thing is damn noisey!!!!!!! The tubes don't sit well in the incredibly cheap tube sockets! It has not broken yet but I am constantly wiggling the tubes around to get rid of the additional noise so I can just have the obnoxious HUM

2005 Black Tolex Fender Pro Junior. Made in Mexico. 15 big tube watts. One volume control. One tone control. One channel. Two Sovtek 12AX7WCs (high gain) and a pair of Sovtek EL84s. That's it! This amp is just about as simple as it gets. As a bit of an audiophile, I was attracted to the simplicity of the Pro Junior.

I like that fact that this amp is simple, but c'mon, giving this amp a 9 or 10 in terms of features is silly. There is no versatility here.

Sound Quality : 10
Several people below stated that this amp has a very good "out-of-the-box" sound. WOW! I couldn't disagree more. The Fender Pro Junior has the worst out-of-the-box sound I've ever heard. Unbelievably harsh and fatiguing. In fact, I seriously thought about returning the amp.

I previously owned a Fender Frontman 25R amp. 25 watts, solid-state, distortion channel, reverb, three-band EQ, and a 10" speaker. I modified my Frontman with an Eminence Ragin' Cajun 10" to great effect. I traded the Frontman 25R in for the Pro Junior and kept the Ragin' Cajun speaker.

Back to the Pro Junior. 24 hours after I bought the Pro Junior, it was still sounding like crap. I installed the 10" Ragin' Cajun and the sound improved noticeably. It was still harsh, however. I suspected the stock Sovtek tubes. I have never heard a Sovtek tube I liked. I ordered a replacement set of JJ tubes from the Oregon-based eurotubes.com.

I can't believe the difference the JJ tubes made in the Pro Junior. Trust me, YOU MUST REPLACE THE TUBES IN THE PRO JUNIOR ASAP!! The stock Sovteks are truly the worst tubes I have ever heard. Where the stock Sovteks are harsh and gritty, the JJs are smooth, warm, and clean. You don't have to be an audiophile to hear the difference. The Sovtek pre-amp tubes also rattled whenever I played a certain note on the guitar.

The stock Pro Junior gets a 3 in terms of sound quality and the upgraded Pro Junior with JJ tubes gets a 10. I know that's quite a disparity, but in this case those numbers are justified. Again, you MUST replace the Sovteks if you're at all interested in sound quality.

Both the stock Sovtek and the High-gain JJ pre-amp tubes hum a bit. I have tried the amp with a lower-gain preamp tubes and it didn't hum as much. Still, I'm willing to live with a bit of hum because I prefer the sound of the high-gain tubes.

A note about biasing: many of the guys over at the Fender forum have said that the Pro Junior doesn't need to be re-biased when replacing the Sovteks power tubes with JJs. Eurotubes.com suggests the same thing. I have not re-biased my amp and I haven't suffered any problems with the JJ EL84s.

I cannot recommend the Pro Junior to potential buyers who do not intend on immediately replacing the tubes and speaker. Buy the solid-state Frontman 25R instead.

Reliability : 7
I have to take a few points off in this area. The volume knob on my amp is a little loose. It's not a big deal now but it probably will be at some point.

Otherwise, the amp seems to built reasonably well.

The Fender Pro Junior is a great value with upgraded tubes and speaker. The Pro Junior tube set from eurotubes.com is $36 + shipping. The Eminence Ragin' Cajun 10" speaker was $45 + shipping from avatarspeakers.com.

I have been playing guitar since the late-80s. I owned a Vox AC30 in the mid-90s and then switched to solid-state gear. For many years, I used the Morley JD10 direct recording pre-amp. The Pro Junior is the first tube amp I've owned since the Vox. Actually, the upgraded Pro Junior reminds me the Vox because both have the same tube compliment. I hope the Pro Junior doesn't cost as much in terms of maintenance fees per year.

Black Tolex version. Bought new. Hard to rate the features other than to say I love the simplicity. Volume and tone controls. 10" speaker. Two preamp tubes, 2 el84 power tubes. In a compact little frame, small cabinet. No frills but lots of action. Currently has stock tubes and speaker still in it. Loud and girthy for its size. I use it with an Sm57 in front of it for live use. But you don't need very much in the PA of a small to medium size club. This things got some umph to it. Volume goes to 12, starts to break up on me around 4 or 5, gets into some reall nice OD at 6-8, after this the volume doesn't increase much, but the distortion starts to really affect the signal. Some people have dismissed this area as unusable, but I kind of like it. The tone knob is really interesting. Sure it doesn't give you a whole lot of eq options, but if you like the basic tone of the amp, which I do, then the tone knob is great. Any position is usable: 0 is just a high cut, but it doesn't woof out. It just gets a darker musical tubey sound (best i could do on the sound description). Pegged, it just allows the highs to come through, but it doesn't get too brittle (a little though) and still retains its full character. Weighs 20 measly pounds and is like a cute little compact pit bull.

Sound Quality : 9
I play a mid eighties MIJ strat with Lace Sensor Silvers in the neck and middle. This amp really works well with this set-up. These pick-ups can really lack luster with some amps, but they love the PJ. Very responsive all of a sudden. They seem to run hotter with this baby but still retain their (relatively) noiseless, smooth character. And its like it was made for a strat. I used to love the 2nd pickup position between the neck and middle, but rarely have played through an amp that doesn't muddy this setting up. But its got classic strat character through this one. Some call this "chimey" I guess. Something like that. Anyway, I play a sort of weird blues-soul tinged dirty punkish rock. This amp is great. The small cabinet is great for what i do. Old school. I amtrying to foster a sort of old raunchy tube-driven sound and this has helped me define that. The breakup is so pretty. Smooth, really, really warm. And I personally love the fuzz that kicks in aroung 9 on the volume. I have been using a combination of eq pedals and a RAT and some various and sundry other OD/distortion units. But I am phasing them all out because the Pro Junior's natural distortion is a beefy sound that no pedal (at least in my price range) could emulate. I roll off the guitar volume when I need to clean it up a bit. I don't play too much clean in the context of my band, so I don't have an issue with the one channel. If you need clean, then I suppose you'd need to use a pedal to give you some gain when you need it. That being said, the clean sounds real nice. Warm. I keep using that word. But it is. And the amp seems to take to pedals well. I put an 808-modded TS9 tubescreamer in front of it and it was lovely. This pedal did not react well with the amp I had been using mostly prior to my PJ purchase, Peavey Classic 30. But it actually makes these tubes scream. The only pedal that I use that doesn't work well is my silly Digitech reverb pedal. Really exposes the digital imitation reverb quality. Gotta get something better ... The biggest revelation with the PJ is that I finally feel "Real Tube Warmth". Even with my 30 watt peavey, for all my practical uses, it was too loud to push past 4 or 5 and it had so much headroom that I couldn't really get any natural tube push and had to rely on pedals for overdrive. And it was never satisfactory. Not with the Pro Junior. You can really get these tubes hot and it sounds great. Finally. And it really augments my playing. Lots of sustain and harmonic character. Very musical.

So, its still got the stock guts. I'm planning on buying some JJ el84s because everyone seems to like these in the pro junior, but I really like the sound she has all-stock. We'll see.

Also, gigged with it for the first time last night. Sound guy was very appreciative. He said he loved how it sounded and loved being able to have control over the output in the house. So if you are concerned about the gig-ability of the pro junior, my take is, jump right in. Just a touch of PA in the house and its on. No monitor signal necessary. This baby is loud onstage. Of course I am running it at around 9 on the volume.

There is some hiss. Hence, one point off til I can get that resolved.

Bought it last week so I don't know. But relatively cheap construction aside, it is so simple that it might be possible to trouble shoot most issues by one's self. Unless the PC Board fries or something

Been playing for 20 25 years, since i was a kid. I would buy this amp again. Matter of fact i got my eye set on buying another one, run em stereo. Have only had it for a short time but I really love it. Compared to my Classic 30, it just is better. The Classic 30 has a nice clean, but it is brittle compared to the PJ's. And the Classic 30's OD channel is for shit, thin and lacking in beef for my taste. PJ has the best OD I've heard from a non-boutique amp. And it is so very portable. I gig in NYC regularly and the ease of tote is wonderful. Not to mention it seems to make sound guys (and girls) happy. And I prefer to make soundpeople happy. Know what I'm sayin? So, great for practice, great for gigs. It's really inspiring. I'm getting the sweats everytime I plug in now. Really likes Strats all you strat folk!

This is a black tolex version. It has volume and tone controls, an on-off switch, and the ability to connect to a different speaker cabinet, which I take advantage of. I would give the amp a "10" for features if it didn't have the tone control (i.e., less is more). The sheer simplicity of this amp is its beauty. The Pro Jr. has no reverb, but I've heard it said that "reverb is for cowards," so perhaps its omission is a blessing.

Sound Quality : 9
I use a '52 Reissue Tele and a Les Paul Standard with this amp, it sounds wonderful with both. The amp changes its complexion dramatically as its volume increases. Up to about 4, it delivers a pleasing clarity and fullness; the notes stand out easily. The amp starts to break up after 4, and by 5.5--particularly with the Les Paul and its humbuckers--the amp is distoring nicely. Nothing cheesy or synthetic: just honest tube-amp distortion. No guitar pedal can fabricate a sound like the Pro Junior produces when it's running hot and you're driving humbuckers through it.

From 5.5 to 12 on the volume scale, the amp breaks up even more, producing a Neil Youngish sound that coats the notes in bristling distortion. Very nice.

My only beef is that, even at 15 watts, the amp is too loud. I would love to summon the quality of natural break-up at 5.5 at half the volume. In the interest of achieving this effect, I bought a Weber MASS attenuator, but unfortunately, this device robbed the amp of some valuable tone (the MASS sits between the amp and the speaker, which is why I appreciated being able to easily disconnect the speaker from the amp).

So, I was disappointed that the MASS didn't deliver toneful natural distortion at reasonable volume. But, when I sent the line-out of the MASS into the clean channel of my Mesa Boogie Mark IV combo(essentially turning the Pro Jr. into a pre-amp) I got what I sought: reams of snarling, devil-made distortion and buckets of fist-pumping tone. Whatever tone the MASS removes from the loop, the Boogie injects back and then some. I have never heard a nastier-sounding rig; it's almost frightening.

This setup works best with humbuckers, and you can forget playing anything even remotely "clean." This Pro Jr.-MASS-Boogie combination is a one-trick pony that does its one thing exceptionally well. Practical for gigging? Two amps and a Weber MASS? Perhpas not, and it's certainly not practical if you want to do anything other than ARRRRGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!

Reliability : 8
I had to replace the tubes right away because they were causing some noise and intermittent drop outs. I put in some Mesa tubes, and they tightened up the sound appreciably. I've not gigged much with the amp, but so far it's been reliable. Do I think it's as reliable as my Mesa Boogie? No. I KNOW the Boogie is going to work all the time. I don't have quite the same confidence in the Pro Jr. But so far, no major problems.

I've been playing since 1973, and I've owned a Marshall stack, a Fender Twin, a Garnet combo, a Peavy, and a Sears Symphonic that I bought for about $15 and still wish I had. I would without question buy another Pro Jr. were it stolen. Or maybe I'd just steal one from someone else. Whatever. The point is that it's an incredibly low-priced amp for its sound quality and build. In fact, it's likely one of the best guitar-amp values on the market.

I chose this amp because it was recommended by a professional guitarist who also produces bands and runs a studio. He's got two Pro Jr.s, and they do get used on rock 'n' roll albums with tremendously good results.

Volume and tone! What more could you possibly need? Well... not much in my humble opinion. I bought this amp because i didnt want some Marshall DFX piece of **** with flangers and phasers and delay... i wanted this amp for the simple fact that it is a simple amp with a great tone.

Sound Quality : 10
This amp sounds exactly how i want it to sound... it's clean and brilliant and when you turn it up it gets lovely and distorted and leaves a warm feeling.

After reading several reviews of people complaining about the hum and the rattle, one of the FIRST things i did was take out that damn screw! I wasnt going to give it a seconds thought.

I plugged in my Fender Jag, turned it up to about 5 and preceeded to wait for the sound to leak through. Man is it loud!

BRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNNG

SO much louder than i thought it was going to be. I was almost certain it wasnt going to be loud enough but this thing is seriously loud for the size it is!

Perfect.

Reliability : 10
I've not had it long and i've not changed the tubes like everyone keeps going on about. It seems built nice and sturdy and weighs alot more than i thought it would.

I've not dealt with fender yet.

Overall Rating : 10
I've only played my Fender Jag through this and i'm really interested to hear what an old Telecaster might sound through it. I previously used a Marshall VS232. Which is some sort of "valve-state" amp with built in chorus and reverb... after messing around with the internals of that and putting it back together and it NOT working, i used that as a fine example to get a much better valve amp.

I'm so glad i did.

I would absolutly replace this if it were stolen or if i lost it.

Playing a nice stratocaster -
This is the best sounding amp I've ever owned! And in my 30 years of playing - I've owned a lot (all vintage handwired Marshalls & Fenders). Since I was a teenager I been trying to get that feeling in my gut that I felt listening to Jimi or Stevie. Power Tubes distorting just the right way. Printed circuit board, solid-state rectifier, cheap speaker...... I don't care! This amp is a powerhouse. I've spent thousand of dollar trying to get this tone, but for the past 10 or 15 year it was down the street for $300.
It's small, but, it's loud. Plenty loud enough to play bars. If your only playing blues/rock, It's all you need. IF you need to be pretty clean on some tunes you may need another higher wattage amp with it - and an ABY switch.
This amp also responds to pedals better than any other amp I've owned. I'm not a effects junkie at all. 95% of my playing I'm bypassing all effects. Whith this amp, your volume knob on your guitar alone is enough to take you from a Chuck beery rhythem to a Hendrix lead. But, if you can get your hands on some nice vitage pedals - Vox Wah & Fuzz Face - and add a clean boost pedal, your now in a place where many strive to be, but few arive - Jimi/StevieLand. This is a much better place to end up in than Neverland - where you may be melested by Mr. Jackson.
If you like the sounds of Jimi, Stevie, Page, Clapton, Buddy Guy..... and your using single coil pickups you need to buy this amp!

Two chicken head knobs. FOur tubes. Could not be simpler. No reverb - the one feature I wish it had. But then it wouldn't be a Pro Jr.
Don't know when this one was made. 2000?

I play a wide array of classic rock, alt-country and like styles through a variety of guitars, including a hollowbody Heritage 575, Epiphone Sheraton, Korean Gretsch Clone Shine 909, Fender 72 reissue Tele, Faded Les Paul. I bought this after learning that a lot of my favorite rock records were recorded using small, stripped down tube amps (Led Zep I etc.)
The Junior will break up nicely if you turn it up past about 6, but that's dang loud in a small room. You think 15 watts isn't a lot of power? Crank this thing. I use various OD and distortion boxes to get more crunch at sane volumes. This is mainly a practice amp, but i have gigged with it using a Shure SM57 and it's performed like a Champ.

Prior to swapping out the stock tubes, my Pro had a loud enough HUM! to be annoying, particularly when miked through a PA.

Reliability : 8
Here's the whole point of this review: The people who say this amp performs a lot better, and more quietly, if you swap out the stock Fender tubes and replace them with Electro Harmonix tubes are right. I just did it. The $%^&* Hum! is almost entirely gone. The tone, always good, is improved. The natural breakup/distortion seems to kick in nicely at a lower volume. I also took out the screw in the back plate that goes in just below the volume pot. Not sure if that was a problem, but removing it hurt nothing. I bought replacement E-H tubes (plus a spare 12AX7) for $43 at tubedepot.com. This simple move saved me hundreds I might have spent on some boutique low watt tube amp. Do Not buy groove tubes at Guitar Center. You'll pay double the price of the EH's and if you check out the comments on GT's you'll see that a lot of folks weren't happy they did.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Bought it used. Never contacted Fender. Swapped the tubes myself. It was easy.

Overall Rating : No Opinion
This is a solid, good sounding practice amp for someone playing blues, classic rock, country or other styles where a clean tube tone is appropriate. Mike this to a decent PA, and get a couple of stomp boxes for effects, and this amp will handle a small club gig just fine. I'd love to own a boutique low watt amp, but this fits my needs and budget. If it were stolen, I'd probably get another.

Reviewing a 2003 (revision D) Fender Pro Junior. This amp has a single input, one volume and one tone control. These are the only features a blues player should ever need. The simplicity of this circuit is what makes it sound so good. The only faceplate omission is a second input which is useful for running simultaneous amps. Some people have been referring to this amp as Class A. It is Class AB in reality and therefore requires matched tubes.

Sound Quality : 8
I use strats and teles loaded with single coils. These are the only guitars/pick-ups I am familiar with and cannot comment on how this amp sounds with Les Pauls, Humbuckers, etc.....
This amp has a great sound for the price. No question. Resembles the tweed era Fender sound (as does the design). Given the market which Fender was targeting on this model, there are some very cheap components and design short-cuts. Most of these can be remedied within a $100 price range. The tubes are not high quality and will almost certainly rattle. I experienced this with both of my Pro Jrs and a Blues Jr. I used to own (reverb ruins tone). Also the speaker is cheap (what do you expect for $300). I installed a 10" alnico Jensen from my '66 Super Reverb and it sounds like a true tweed. The omission of a stand-by switch is a valid complaint. All tube amps should have a stand-by mode for longer tube life and Fender knows better.

Reliability : 5
In reference to the component quality mentioned above, there are some cheap factors here. The controls are ciruit board mounted and are easily broken. I broke both of mine four days after purchase (guess I'm too used to rock solid vintage gear). There isn't much room inside to change the pots, but I think some of the smaller diameter 'real' pots will fit. Also the tube sockets are ciruit board mounted and, as with any ciruit board amp, a hard knock can crack the board.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Haven't dealt with Fender. Have always owned vintage gear.

Overall Rating : 10
For the price this amp can't be beat. I, for one, appreciate the fact that Fender is the only company making a no-feature tube amp in this price range. It is not a versitle amp. Anyone who buys this amp should be interested in tweed-era tones of tube distortion and saturation. Also, don't buy this amp if you are a reverb junkie. I used to be, until I discovered how much better my tone is without reverb or tremolo in the ciruit. My playing was also greatly improved once I ditched the reverb crutch. If you like SRV or Danny Gatton remember that they had all of the reverb physically disconnected on thier amps. You don't need to sound like you're in Carnegie Hall to sound good.

Mine is a 2002 made in Mexico Pro Jr fitted with 12AU7 tubes. The output tubes are stock.
Simplicity? Well, a single input, a single volume knob and a single tone knob makes for simplicity. Yet it doesn?t come anywhere near the simplicity OR the tone of my DIY 5F1 Champ, which is an absolute wonder of simplicity. I always turn the tone down to 0 which, I reckon, means the tone circuit is not engaged at all. So what little features the amp has don?t do me no good and I could just as well do without them.

Sound Quality : 4
I use it for blues harp with a Green Bullet and an MXR Micro Amp stomp box.
There is a number of mods you can do to the PJ to improve its tone further for harmonica, but all I?ve done so far is the tube swap. Changing the preamp tubes to 12AU7?s improved the harp sound IMMENSELY lowering the overall power and knocking off a lot of excessive treble. I always turn the tone all the way down to 0 and still I would like more lows (or less highs?). I?m curious to hear what the various schematics mods suggested to me by my amp tech can do to the sound.
As you?re probably beginning to understand I?m not overly impressed with the tone. It sounds too clean and lacks the tube amp character that you want when playing blues harp. I have to run the microphone through the MXR Micro Amp stomp box to drive the amp into distortion, but then to avoid feedback I must turn the volume down and any tube amp has to be pushed a little to sing. This should be done not primarily by pushing the input signal but by pushing the tubes. Operating at too low levels the amp just doesn?t get very tubey.

Reliability : 4
I changed the original plastic input jack to a metal switchcraft jack before even taking the amp from the store. Having changed hundreds of broke down plastic jacks, my amp tech told me he couldn?t understand how Fender could put such a weak input jack onto this otherwise great little amp. Neither can I, though, in retrospect, I?m no longer convinced it is ?a great little amp?, and the cheapo jack isn?t the only thing in need of replacement/improvement here.

The white text and numbers on the panel began peeling off as soon as I started using the amp, and I haven?t even been taking it to gigs yet. This is a relatively cheap amp, but this shouldn?t happen, especially not so short after purchase.

The tube sockets seem a little cheesy too, being soldered right onto the circuit board. Time will tell what they?re up to.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never dealt with them.
One year warranty.

Overall Rating : 5
Being a tube amp it needs a little cranking to begin kicking and since I have not used it out, i.e. have not cranked it yet, I believe and hope that it has not yet revealed it?s true self to me. But it hasn?t by far fulfilled my expectations. All you guys giving the PJ such high rates, what have you done to your amps? Or is it just that the PJ is better suited for guitar than for harp? Lots of sources on the www claim the PJ to be the best option if you?re looking for a good sounding, tube harp amp and don?t want to spend a fortune on a vintage Fender Tweed. The PJ has yet to convince me on that one! A solid state to tube rectifier conversion (as described by Gerald Weber) and some additional circuit surgery might help, but then it is no longer a Pro Jr, is it? I?ll get back here with a new review when I?ve done the modifications. Until then, save your money or get a tweed style amplifier DIY kit instead!

Very simple, tube amp. One input , volume, and tone. 15watts, 10 inch eminance speaker. Might be nice if it had reverb, but that might take away from it's simplicity. Sometimes less Is more! I like classic rock styles, blues, love Neil Young's electric thing. This amp is so cool. It can do the above quite well. Does NY very well with the help of an overdrive/booster , and a reverb peddle. This amp was purchased new. Made Mexico 2005.

I use a mid 80's Japanese strat. Nice axe. Three single coil pickups. Not noiseless. Going straight into this amp, sounds nice . Very nice clean tone with volume under 5. At 5 and beyond it starts to saturate into a nice classic rock/blues tone. Use the guitar volume to control the drive, if you will. Dial up the tone pots on the guitar, and you can get that fender chime. Run the guitar through some kind of overdrive , boost unit and wow this thing sounds fantastic. Don't get me wrong, I love the amp with the guitar plugged straight in, great classic tones and all, but when I'm in the mood, some overdrive/boost works. As far as the hum issue mentioned in previous comments, yes there is a hum plugged in or not, volume up or not, its there. The suggestion to back out the screw on the back behind the volume pot to get rid of the hum! IT WORKS! This thing is loud! Holds up no problem and then some with full drum kit in my basement. I think you could gig with it in the right situation. Certainly a small club, coffee house type place.

The electric is a mid 80's Japanese Fender Strat, called a Contemproary Strat. Very nice through this Pro Junior. I've been through 4 different amps prior to the Fender PJ. I feel alot of people buy way too much amp for their needs, or more amp then they can use. For the average guy who loves to play, and likes more classic/blues type tone, and really very good tone I might add, this Fender PJ is perfect. You can crank this amp up and let it do what it's supposed to . Compared PJ to the Blues junior. Same 15watts but to my ears PJ wins hands down. Less dials to fiddle with, just plug in, turn it on and turn it up! Easy to carry around. Looks cool.

15w valve amplifier with a 10 inch fender speaker, 2 preamp valves and 2 power amp valves. Volume and tone controls. Simple. On it's own you will only be able to get clean sounds to rock sounds but no metal sounds. Enough features for me though.

Sound Quality : 10
This amp has loads of volume, it sounds more like 30w than 15w. When volume is below 5 you get a great clean sound ideal for jazz and country and maybe clean punk. Put the volume past 5 to start to drive the valves and go into blues and rock areas, it's warm and crunchy. This is the perfect rock tone for me. As there is only one tone knob you can't get much but it does a good job by itself giving you toneless tones to trebley ones. Sounds valvey.

THE MAIN REASON I AM LEAVING FEEDBACK ON HERE ABOUT THE AMP IS THE BUZZ PROBLEM.
I also bought the amp, brought it home, and noticed the 'annoying buzz'. I bought it a year ago, but it did it from day one.

OVERALL, you SHOULD buy this amp!! It's clean and warm. Leave the effects to the pedals, just go with a clean tube feel.

Even after the buzz problem, I still think this amp is great for the money. Heck, bring a phillips head screwdriver to the store and back the middle screw out until the buzz is gone if you hear one. It really works!!!

I didn't want to remove the screw completely, but you don't have to remove it. Just turn it until it's out a little bit. I agree though with a previous post!!! Hopefully Fender knows about the screw issue and how it relates to the buzzing. It would solve a lot of return issues I'm sure.

I mainly play rock, alternative, blues, jazz, and church music. It suits my style perfectly. the distortion sounds awesome!!! clean sounds very nice, (fender clearn, what can I say?) the distortion is very full, not some cheap thin distortion. I LOVE IT!!!
its a 15 watt... but clearly it sounds much larger than that!!! trust me!

Reliability : 10
Very reliable. atleast mine is! the 90s pro junior were made in the US. so pretty darn reliable. NO PROBLEMS YET!

WORTH THE MONEY! SMALL AND COMPACT, EASY TO CARRY AROUND!!! PURE TUBE SOUND!! AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME!!! I'm SERIOUS!!!!

This is a 15 watt, all tube, one channel, two knob combo built in 2002. I feel, like a lot of other reviewers, that this amps simplicity and tone potential are its major strong points... and being that it is class A and quite loud (but not SUPER loud) it is GREAT for hitting that "sweet spot" between clean and crunch and using picking dynamics and the guitars volume knob (and a couple of tube-screamers at time too) to EXPRESS your soul! I use this amp on open mike nights at local coffee houses and I use this amp when I jam with my band in clubs... so for what I do it is extremely versatile... for some one who is a gain God... your gonna need some pedals... this is pure warm tube clean or od in the same setting (its all in the way you hit the strings!)

Sound Quality : 9
I use a 1994 MIM Stratocaster with Fender Noiseless PU's and this amp LOVES that guitar... I play styles ranging from reggae and funk, to blues and jazz, to classic rock... Hendrix style! This amp is not noisey at all and sounds great on any setting of the volume knob. I put in some new el84's that have a "late" distortion when I got it so I can turn my amp up to about 8 before it is just dirty, not "sweet spot" clean while soft picking as mentioned above. After 8, it still sounds great but that's what I have tube-screamers for to push the amp into 9-12 territory when I need to... set up in the right way, a tube-screamer or two puts me into that Hendrix controled feedback type of lead tone... it is amazing! The amp was noticable louder with the new tubes and being that I've had it for a couple of years I think that everything has "broken in" really well. This thing is a tone machine especially for the price! I like it way more than both the Blues Jr. I used to have and my buddies HRDx which is WAY WAY too loud at the clean/od "sweet spot"! I will say that the HRDx does sound really good, its just way to loud for me... and the Blues Jr. was good too but mine had a HORRIBLY loud reverb hiss. That being said, I think the Pro Jr. is a GREAT amp for any skill level and most any volume level... club owners and sound guys LOVE it when I walk through the door with this 'lil beauty! Not many clubs that I know let you get your power tubes cooking with a larger watt amp and thats what it is all about- hitting the "sweet spot" at an appropriate volume level.

Reliability : 10
No problems here. It shipped with shitty power tubes but after I swaped them out, everything has been great... the pre tubes are all stock... the speaker is stock... it has ALWAYS been there for me... that being said, I never gig without extra tubes! But tubes are not a reliability issue- they are a maintainence issue.

Don't know? Five year warrenty I guess?

Overall Rating : 9
I'm 27 years old and have been playing for 11 years... if this were lost I would definately grab another one. I love everything about this amp... that being said, go out and try one and bring YOUR guitar and if you like it buy one... it is important not to buy these on just reviews... go try it! Another thing to remember, if you play a floor model, it is probably gonna be "broken in" more than the one in the box. When mine came out of the box, it did not sound as nice as it does now... it does get better with age but the fundamental tone is exactly the same. So give it some time to settle in (4-5 months) if you get one brand new. After that, happy playing!

Made in Corona Ca, love the simplicity of 2 knobs, thats why I bought it, reverb would probably suck tone if it were there, I give it a high rating because it has the features I am looking for, as few as possible.

Sound Quality : 9
Sounds killer through my '97 USA Strat with Custom Shop '69 pickups, as well as my '92 Danny Gatton Telecaster with Joe Bardens. Super loud for such a small cabinet, starts breaking up at about 4.5 volume, really doesn't need reverb but if thats what you want get a Blues Junior. I use it for dirty/clean blues and thats where it really shines. Plenty of grind, if I need slightly more I will run my Barber LTD low gain overdrive or my Tonebone classic through it. Have had none of the above problems mentioned yet. Tried my EH Holy Grail reverb with it and did not like the sound, although the EH reverb sounds great through my Fender Custom Shop Blues Breaker.

Playing 27 years, besides the above mentiones guitars I also have a 2002 Gibson ES-335, a 1977 Ibanez ES-175 copy, 2001 Fender Custom Shop Blues Breaker with British made Celestion Vintage 30's and an Ampeg SS150 combo (sweet solid state amp). Traded my Epiphone Galaxy 10 amp for this one, the Epi has more features but suffers in good tone. Have owned the Blues Junior and was not happy with its tone, but this little monster has tone to die for. Strongly reccomend getting this if you have a Real ear for tone.

This is an update to the review below about the broken pot shaft and knobs. Took it to the dealer (Joe's Music, Eastpointe, Michigan); I assumed the repair would be covered under warranty for defective parts. Rob the amp tech said he seriously doubted Fender would cover it as it came under the "broken" category, but if I wanted he would try to make a case and suggested I call Fender and do the same. Bother. Alternative number one was that he could charge me half the bench rate plus parts for the repair (a good deal), OR.. he could replace the pots and the plastic input jack with metal parts, all nutted to the chassis and hardwired to the PCB. They would guarantee the work, and the Fender warranty would still apply to any other non-related problems. I got the amp back 2 hours and $75 later. Good solid work, I'm a happy guy. This is how the amp should have been built in the first place! Now I'm keeping it. Many thanks to Rob and Joe!

I think mine is a Mexican made one from about 2002.
I've had it about a year and 4 months, and I think I'm the 2nd owner.
I mostly play blues and jangly folk-rock sounding stuff for
singing accompaniment.
And mostly at home. So it has more than enough power,
but I like the fact that if I do want to take it to a jam,
it has the power to keep up.
At first, I missed the extra controls, but now, I like the simplicity.
Less knobs to get bumped off the proper setting.
I wish it had come with better tubes, but if it had more features,
it would be more expensive. It's kind of a Volks-amp!
I see the simplicity as being a feature in itself, so I'll give it
an...

I have 2 MIM Standard Strats. One maplenecker with a DiMarzio Virtual
Vintage DP402 neck pickup(loud!) and a Duncan JB Jr. at the bridge, stock middle at the moment, and Hendrix mod.
The other has a rosewood board and has an older iteration of the 57-62
pickups in the neck and bridge positions, and an HS-3 in the middle.
I also have an early '90s Hamer Slammer superstratoid with a normal
Strat bridge, a DiMarzio VirtuAL 2 middle pup in the neck position,
an old Bill Lawrence (real Bill!) split rail in the middle and a stock
humbucker at the bridge.
All three guitars sound great through the Pro Jr. and it suits my blues lead and jangly folk-rock style very well.

When I got the amp used, it had <both> the dreaded hum, AND the
rattle. The hum was solved by a JJ ECC82 in one of the preamp
positions. I use an Electro Harmonix 12AX7, usually in the first
position. If I put the higher gain Electroharmonix first,
I get a more bluesy tone, if I put the JJ ECC82 first, I get
a crisper more country tone. I have tried 2 JJs in the preamp,
but I found the sound too "hi-fi" for my taste.

The rattle was harder to track down!
I tweaked the power tube retainer bracket and springs,
tried removing them, stuffed aluminum rod from a hobby shop in
the springs, still there!
I bought new Sovtek EL84s, still there!
(ironically, the production date on these was a year older
than the stock Sovtek power tubes)
It wasn't until I changed the power tubes to JJ EL84s that it went
away! (and the tone is better too!)
Later I was reading in a Lord Valve newsletter that Sovtek
EL84s from that era (2001-2002 if I remember correctly)
have an inherent flaw that causes plate rattle!
When I go to the local Fender Dealer, I try guitars through
the (brand new) Pro Junior, of course- AND IT HAS THE SAME RATTLE!
DITCH THE SOVTEK EL84s! AND FENDER SHOULD TOO!
A friend has tried EI (Serbian) EL84 tubes in his PJ and likes them too.

BTW, I checked for the top middle screw phenomenon mentioned elsewhere
in the reviews, but mine already had the top middle screw amputated to prevent it. Just out of curiosity, I put a longer screw in,
and sure enough HUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!

I recently tried different speakers, and I have to agree
the stock speaker (Eminence?) is very blah.
So far I have tried a Celestion 10 (relabeled Fender 60w, probably a v10) in an external cabinet, and love the tone, but it is not
that responsive. Really growls nice on power chords or boogie rhythms,
though. It also drops the volume of the amp a bit, so I can turn
up the volume and let the tubes work harder for better tone.
I recently swapped the Jensen reissue from my Behringer
Vintager into the Pro Jr., and it is <very> responsive, but just
a little metallic. I'm thinking of buying an Eminence Ragin Cajun
(Patriot series) since it mentions it being very touch sensitive and
responsive, hopefully w/o the metallic quality.
With the Celestion, I can turn the volume up, and above 7, it
doesn't really raise the volume, but really changes the nature
of the sound... this is really the amps overdrive setting,
which I really don't get to use much, so I tend to use various
OD pedals on clean boost. I have used a Boss BD-2 Blues Driver,
a Boss SD-1, stock and with 2 changed capacitors, and a Johnson
TOD-9, also with 2 changed capacitors.
I also tried a Tubeworks (actually Butler with the funny button)
Tube Driver through it at a store, and it gave it a wonderful
dark bluesy sound.
At least in stock condition, it <did not> like Ibanez Tubescreamers,
maybe because it's pairing a midrangey amp with a midrangey pedal.
Stock, this amp is a bit blah, and probably buzzy due to the Sovteks.
You can get a great variety of sounds with tube and speaker swaps,
though. Since it is not a 10 as it comes from the factory,
I will give it an ....

So far I have never had a problem with it,
EXCEPT the hum and tube rattles.

Oh yeah, before I sold my 2 humbucker guitar,
the stock speaker made a short nasty noise for a little bit.
I wouldn't expect the stock speaker to survive very long with
humbuckers.
Because of the noisy Sovteks, and the cheap speaker,

I bought it used, so I have not dealt with them.
One of the reasons I bought it though is because

of support in that respect from other users, and the
amp is well known to amp techs and tube gurus.

I've been playing guitar since 1966. Most of that was acoustic,
although I did have a Fender Mustang and Pro Reverb amp in high school. I had about a 6 year break from playing guitar due to a
finger injury, then realized I could still play nylon string guitars
and electrics strung with lighter gauge strings. I have
been playing electric blues for about 5 years now.
If it were lost or stolen, I would very likely get another one,
although I might replace it with a silverface Champ, which
gets great overdrive, but at lower volumes than the Pro Junior.
I love the PJ's great bang for the buck, the simplicity, the light weight(I have a bad back).
I have a love/hate relationship with how LOUD IT IS!
Not a good choice for late night practicing, so I have
held onto my Behringer GM-110 Vintager for that.
The Behringer also edged out the PJ for the church praise team
gig I did for 2 years cause I didn't have a suitable mic for the PJ
and the church was so small, and the Behringer has a DI out which
made setup easy.
BTW, the Pro Jr. and the Vintager sound excellent together
in stereo chorus with the Vintager on Tweed setting!
For a gig capable tube amp, in it's $200 to $300 dollar price
range, there is really no competition except it's brother
the Blues Junior(used about $300)... oh yeah, maybe a Pignose, but a used one I tried had some scarey problems! I would also consider
a Tech 21 Trademark 10 or 30 as a supplement to the Pro Junior,
and the Trademark 30 as a backup.
If you like the Pro Jr, but want more features, try a Zinky Blue
Velvet- Bruce Zinky designed both amps!(He worked for Fender a while)
The Blue Velvet also has better low volume overdrive,
but is of course quite a bit more expensive
As some have said, the Pro Jr. is a one-trick pony but oh what a trick! Actually that's not totally true, with tube and speaker swaps,
it can do lots of tricks, just not at the push of a button.
I could see keeping a half dozen small speaker cabinets (1x10,1x12,
or 2x10) loaded with different speakers to give it different flavors.
Or a 2nd Pro Jr. with a totally different set of tubes and a different
speaker, and a pan pedal or A/B box connecting them.
Even though I haven't given it higher than an 8 in any category,
this amp is somehow greater than the sum of it's parts,
and so I will give it a ...

I've had the amp about a year. I have a number of vintage and newer tube amps, I'm happy with the tone, lots of volume. Only play in my music room for my own amusement, don't gig.

Reliability : 2
This is why I'm writing the review. PLASTIC POTS. I baby all my gear. This amp sits, covered, in it's own little protected nook in my music room. It never moves. Normally I never tweak the tone control; tonight I'm practicing, decide on a little more treble, grab the tone control and it came off in my hand. The pot shaft was broken up inside the knob, and the knob had a split right through the middle. The little plastic skirt on the bottom of the knob was cracked off and broken. I pulled off the volume knob, lo and behold, it had also split down the middle. I used to have a Behringer amp, it too had plastic pots that broke; this amp has been well-protected so that this very thing would not occur. Tomorrow it goes back to the music store for repair (under warranty), then it probably goes away. As much as I like this amp, I've had it with the plastic crap.

We'll see.

Would I buy another one? Nope. This is a quality amp in every respect except in this regard. You want to mount pots to a PCB board, at least use metal pots and design it so the pots are nutted to the control panel. How much extra would it cost? Ridiculous. I'm already looking for a replacement, probably something vintage. I always wanted a Fender amp. Now I know better.

When I first tried this amp I was a little disapointed in its overall sound quality.Being a C.E.T.,I wanted to see what could be done. The bass was too flubby sounding with no chunk. To tighten up the bass,I changed r-4 to a 2.7k and bypassed it with a.47mf filter. Also do this with r-11.Youll get more dynamics and clarity. This amp also runs too hot with the bias at -10 volts(my amp measured- 8.5 volts). To get longer output tube life and less hum change r-29(15k)to18.k.The bias will be at around -12v.Also the two green filament wires that go to the tube circuit board should be twisted together.Unsolder just one wire and give them about one twist per inch ,resolder.Hum will be lowered. Also add a standy switch between the bridge and the main filter caps. The tubes will last longer because they wont be shocked every time at turn on.(They should have the 6.3vfilaments on for at least 20 seconds before appling main b+ voltage of around 330v on this amp). I did these changes ,greatly improved little amp!

Features : 1
This is a single channel amp with one volume and one tone control. If the sound is good, features are less necessary. It may be a bit much to ask for such an inexpensive and great sounding amp, but an extension speaker jack would be very cool. Basically this is an anti-feature amp, which is a feature in itself. I can not rate it very highly, though.

Sound Quality : 10
I have used this amp with my Fender Stratocasters and Telecasters, and all I can say is that the sound is absolutely spectacular. With the volume set at 8 and the tone at 12, I get this creamy, violin-like sound. I do find that it hums quite a bit. Stage crew and other musicians have asked if something was wrong with the amp. I generally keep the guitar volume down when I am not playing. Okay. The bad news is that although I can get that cool Ron Wood with the Small Faces distortion out of a P-90 equipped Les Paul Special (the hum is still really bad), I cannot turn the amp volume past 6. In fact any P-90 or humbucking equipped guitar I plugged into it sounded like mud at volume levels above 6. I have tried many different 12AX7 tubes to no avail. I get mud. Through the course of my experimenting I discovered that eI el84 power tubes make this amp sound even louder and more amazing with single-coil pickup guitars.
I do not get much treble out of the amp, but it sounds great, anyway. I typically run it with tone cranked to 12. In spite of everything preceeding, I really love this amp. I played a blues gig the first time out with it, and the crew snickered while they were miking it up and sound testing it. We hit the opening shuffle with me using the volume on my Telecaster to manage the volume and distortion. When I opened it up for the solo, this little monster, brought the audience to their feet. It flat out rocked. This amp makes me play better. It has so much soul and muscle that I must overlook its few idoisynchracies. For what it does, this is the perfect amp for me.

Reliability : 5
I blew the speaker after about 2 years. I was running a Korg multi-effects unit, and cranking the volume way up. It should not have blown, considering the speakers rating and the power output from this amp, but I accepted it and replaced the speaker with a Celestion 10". At max excursion the Celestion compresses and distorts in a more musical way than the stock Fender Eminence speaker did. But this is splitting hairs. Both sound great. While changing tubes, I note that the preamp tubes get loose after a while. Also since there are no retainers for these tubes, some tubes are more loose than others. I am currently using Ruby preamp tubes without any problems. The power tubes are retained by the most hokey setup I have ever encountered. There really are no spring retainers at the chasssis, so Fender just laces the spring into the hole, and I just cross my fingers and hope it stays there. One of the springs slipped out when I was changing power tubes and I had a very difficult time getting it back in. My Pro Junior leads a pretty tough life, but so far nothing else has gone wrong. I have had it nearly 10 years, and the jacks and pots are still in decent shape. But I know I am dancing with the devil on this. An amp with so many potential points of failure has to go wrong eventually. Doesn't it? Not yet. For the money, it has been more reliable that a few Marshals and Peaveys I have contended with.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I called them about the blown speaker only to discover that it was out of warantee. Fender wanted a Bazillion dollars for a hinky Eminence 12" speaker (that I had already blown once). I got on-line and ordered a Celestion 10" about 8 years ago. No a peep since. What can I say? My Tech is Fender authorized, so I rarely need to call anybody else.

Overall Rating : 9
I have been playing the Blues for 30 years, and I own all kinds of gear, including a Pre-CBS Deluxe Reverb, A Twin Reverb, A Pro Reverb, A Marshal JMP 50, an Ampeg V4, and so on. The Pro Junior is my favorite amplifier for tone, simplicity, and the fire that it can breath, in the right hands. This amp defines my sound nearly as much as my hands do. This amp is a tone machine tour-de-force. There is none better I have found for the money.

The absolute basics amp. Volume and treble controls only and one input.
It's all the feature I want from amp.
I use it for recording, rehearsals and medium sized gigs. 15 Watts might not sound like much but this amp has plenty of cut through to cope when playing with people using much stronger amps.

Sound Quality : 10
I've had many amps of many makers but this one I like the best for it's tone. It's got a great spark and tone is fat (I don't mean bassy).
Cuts through almost anything without having nasty midrangey sound to it. Startrs breaking up at 4 so if you like very clean sound, this amp is not for gigs so get something stronger. Going to 7 or so gives enough nice sustain for leads.
It is very easy to mike up for recording, most mike possitions sound good. It also takes effect pedals very well which makes it good recording amp.

Reliability : 2
Here is where it has it shortcomings and I'm sure I can also speak for all the people I played who had this amp because for some of them I've been doing repairs on this amp (I'm an el. techician).
I've never seen one of these amp break down completely which is a very good thing and this should deserve rating of 10 however reliablility means more than just having the amp working.
It is cheaply made and there are two main problems because of that.
One is the input socket. It is soldered directly on PCB and often the solder cracks and needs to be resoldered.
The other is noise, hum and rattle and is usually caused by preamp tubes. The chassis is made of rediciously thin sheet metal which vibrates like crazy along with the speaker movement. You got rattle so you put new tubes in, it's ok for day or so and than it starts again. That's because the tubes get loose inside, simple as that.
For few extra Dollars they could have made the chassis stronger and I've never come across amp chassis sheet metal that thin. It is disappointing and not much can be done about it.
I always have to swap preamp tubes for recording so it's quiet and so do other people how ever the tube sockets are also soldered directly on PCB and if you're not carefull these sockets can also come loose from the PCB when swapping tubes too often.
I have to give it low rating because having problems like this even though the amp generaly works is not reliability.
One small thing - the new amp had a loose grill cloth, the toles started to peel of in corners after few months. How sloppy for a Fender product!

Customer Support : 5
Just for curiosity I rang Fender Australia regarding rattles and hiss. They told me they never heard of this problem. I guess they don't read reviews here.

Overall Rating : 5
Great sounding amp, internals are extremely cheaply build, cabinet is good and strong. Value for money? Sound 10, build quality 2.

1 Volume, 1 Tone. everywhere says how tis got "clean to drive" volume control but it hoguht i'd acyually explain it for anyone who wants abit more detial. lable 1 to 12, at a 0.5 the voluem level is right for jaming with CDs ect. at 5 its LOUD and the distortion starts to kick in, at 8 onwards the veolume dosnt increase too much but the distortion will. the tone knob may seem silly buit its great, unlike tone knobs on pedals and guitar it dosnt jsut muffle the sound, no m,atter where the tone knob is u get a crisp clear sound, its more for use if ur ears r hurting and u want to cut the trebble. i'm not sure how to rate the features, the amp dosnt have onboard digital effects or an EQ or effects loop, but i dont want or need any of this, its got what it needs... so i guess its almost perfect

Sound Quality : 9
i use a gibson invader lespaul with it and it and mainly play blues but also play anything else (metal, funk, country). its to hard to describe a sound, its cristle clear even if u turn ur guitar volume down. what is great is ahving the amp distorted and useing the volume on ur guitar to clean up the signal perfectly. one thing i shoudl mention as others have, i think, is the hum. if u playing quitely (volume at a 0.5) then u'll notice it and maby get annoyed with it but they dont put a range of 12 on a knob so its at 0.5 all the time! aprently changiung the tubes gets rid of the hum, also when i'm playing loudly 3 or 4 onwards something in the amp is reverbirating, not a big deal, nothing a wedge or paper or tightening of a screw wont fix.

Reliability : 8
i havnt owned it that long but it seems pritty reliable, i'm not impressed with the knobs and input jack though.... plastic!! cheap!!, but to be fare, its one of the cheapest valve a,ps u'll find, plus when they eventaly giv way i'll jus replace them with solid quality replacments.

Customer Support : 9
i havent spoken to fender but i was impressed with the shcematic and PCB diagram included with the amp making it much easyer to self service. (plus replacing the cheap plastic pots)

Overall Rating : 9
A good amp, heavyer to carry than i expected 14kg, walking any further than 15 minits with it is something i dont want to expirence again. a quality amp with a little room for improvement... replaced pots and jack (maby Valves) and u've got somehting to last a life time and never want to loose. basicly: if it weighted 5kg less, the pots and jack were metal and there wasnt a hum, the amp would actually be perfect, too good to be true... i just have to work out a way to drop 5kg...

Little to add to the comments of the others besides:
The amps starts to sound great with volume at 3.5 and that is definitily too loud when you practice in a thin-walled neigbourhood. So I use a (selfmade) powersoak with controllable line-level output instead of the the speakers.
Then i feed the lineout into a fender twin-reverb with volume at 2.5 which is a lot less than the cranked pro.
Practically i use the pro as a distortion unit - I swear the best you ever played if you love to control the amount of distortion with your fingers or your guitar volume!

the build quality is poor. the internal board starts to rattle on all pros i heard.

Tip: open the cabinet and remove the screwes that hold the board. fix the board with tie wrap and sit it on a foammat.

Bought new in 2005. 15 class A watts, 4 tubes, 2 knobs and 1 10 inch speaker. Tubes and speaker were immediately swapped out for JJ's EL84s and ECC803s and for a Celestion Tube 10. $90 of upgrades that double the amps value in my mind. I chose this amp because it is simple and replicates your guitar's tone with great transparency. Don't buy this amp and down it for a lack of features; that's not the point. Versatility, here, comes from the ability to swap tubes.

Sound Quality : 10
I plug my Fender Highway 1 Strat directly into this amp w/Monster rock cables. I achieve a raw, beautiful tone that sings whether you're playing rhythm or lead. The sound is full and perfectly balanced. I know that I'm not using the most expensive pieces of equipment here, but they are quality pieces. And that's the sound I'm getting... quality. I play w/the volume relatively low; set at 4 (remember this is a class A tube amp; very loud), and the tone set at 7. I keep the tone on my strat rather low because I find that raising the tone on the amp causes it to break up faster and at lower volumes. Now that I've found a quality clean sound I'm simply going to put a good distortion pedal in front of it. This is an excellent rock amp... it's very raw and edgy.

Prior to the tube and speaker changes the sound was not as articulate or balanced. I'd say it was muffled and bassy. Stock, I'd give this amp a 7.

I have also driven a friends cheap Marshall 4x12 MG cabinet w/this amp. I can't really tell much about this, however, because the speakers in that cab are so cheap. From what I could tell, the amp should have no problem pushing that number of speakers though.

Original speaker popped w/the volume at 8 and up when using a thick sounding SG. No problems with my Strat.

Not too many features on this amp. Volume and Tone. That is what you expect for an amp this size. All tube powered by dual EL84's give a full sound. 10" speaker sounds so full. Unlike other small solid state amps, this one has some bight and fills the room with sound. I give it an 8 becuase you cannot adjust the EQ. Seems to be missing a lot of mid frequencies but when the tone is cranked all the way, the amp breaks up nicely and more highs come out making it sound quite nice.

Sound Quality : 8
I primarily use a fender tele and a gibson les paul through some small effects such as tube screamer and some delay. Amp may be a little noisy but mine may need some new preamp tubes to fix that.

Reliability : 8
I kind of question the reliability on this thing. Just like any other newer Fender input jack, it is plastic and will break in the future. Also, since this amp is on a small scale, the pot's have plastic shafts and are mounted to the circuit board. They aren't screwed to the chassis first and then wire to the board or whatever. So the shafts could break easily if stressed too much. Everything else seams to be quite sturdy such as cabintet, blonde tolex, leather handle, etc.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never dealt with them

For its use as a little practice amp and an amp to play at home, (my class A TopHat is a little loud for home) I must say I am really pleased with it. Sounds nice a clean but can get dirty. I don't move it around too much so i don't worrying about the pot's and input jack too much which really give me comfort.

My PRO JUNIOR is black tolex 2002 made in Corona Calif.
The versatility of the amp is limited, but don't get me wrong.
It's a one trick pony in that it gets a great Classic Rock Blues tone. It's so simple, and the tone is so pure, which is the best thing about this amp. To get the most out of the Pro Jr. you have to be a player that uses their volume knob to regulate the amount of gain in your tone and play with dynamic in your hands not in your boxes or rely on channel switching. There's a place for channel switching amps.. I own a 1999 Tweed HOtRod Deluxe, which is technically more versatile than the Pro Jr. but I would take the Pro tone over the Hot Rod Deluxe any day.
Only Volume and tone, but in this case, less is, Indeed, more!
I always thought you HAD to have treble, middle bass, reverb to get tone. This amp showed me I was wrong. One volume, one tone is all you need. It's the first amp that showed me you do not need reverb.
The Pro JR is in different league than the Blues JR., which to me is over designed. Amazing power for 15 watts.
I play full throttle, open E slide guitar, so I always want a classic, throaty, glassy, distorted tone, and look for in an amp that responds to my dynamics with a touch of my volume knob. The Pro does this job so well.
I read alot of people complaining about the stock speaker and tubes but all I heard was TONE, TONE, TONE right out of the store.
I did replace the power tubes with JJ's but only after three years of playing. As far as the speakers: I A/B'd with various 10" & 12" Eminence & Celestions, including greenback and Red Fang in combination with different cabinets and always came back to the stock 10"Eminence.
I kid you not! Yeah you might not get the full bottom bass, but if you want a great sounding overdrive amp in small clubs & portability, or for recording the Pro is one of the best out there.

Sound Quality : 10
I play Blues rock slide guitar. I strive for Duane, Dicky Fillmore East Tone in my over Drive and sparkly, classic fender Jangle in my clean tone. The Pro Junior has both but you have to crank the amp and use your guitar volume knob to go from clean to distorted. I set the Pro Volume at 6-7 and tone full up to 12.
This amp is a chameleon in that if you turn your guitar volume down, it sounds like classic black face fender all jangly and sweet, but turn up your volume and it's like a small Marshall JTM 45. Much more pronouced mids than say when cranking a fender black face deluxe.
It works great both with my 1999 Gibson Les Paul DC and my custom made telecaster. I can get a nice controlled feedback with the Les Paul in the right room and at the right angle of amp
Been playing the amp for 3 years now in many different places:
At house jams with drummer and bass player (too loud sometimes
and onstage at open jams and with my band in various size venues.
I play out in bars and various small to mid size stages with my band and the Pro produces all the volume I need. However, at open mic jams where I have to complete with 2-4 other guitarists onstage, only then is Pro sa little too underpowered: Switching to my 12" greenback and speaker cabinet help get a bit more volume, but better yet, I use my Fulltone OCD pedal (which adds 30db to my volume) with my ProJR ,..then I can play anywhere..Seriously.

Reliability : 6
I have only had one problem with the Pro Junior:
The input jack is cheap, made out of plastic and the plastic rim wore away making a bad jack connection that would crackle when I plugged it it..
I brought to the store I bought at in Vermont, and since it was under warranty they said they would fix it or they could order a new input jack and I could put it in.
I ended up doing it myself which wasn't to hard for me..(I'm handy with a soldering iron.) When I got the new jack, I opened up the amp and soldered jack into place. It was a little tricky holding the pc board back, but the amp went right back together. One exception,.. only the nut fit back on..it was too tight for the washer & nut to fit back together.
Amps been working like new since. Too bad Fender couldn;t spend a bit more money for quality aon such a great sounding amp.
I usually bring my back up Pro Junior to gigs just in case
(I own a limited addition Woody Pro.)

I've been playing over 27 years and owned and played many types of amps.
I own everything from a '51 Gibson Sky Lark to a 1962 Fender Princeton and 68 Bassman amps, Hot Rodded by Trey "Phish" Anastasio' amp tech extrodinaire Bill Carruth, over haulled with Mecury Magnetics and Allen input and power transformers, NOS Tubes National Union 6v6 tubes,Black and silver RCA, 12ay7, tubes, JJ El34 bla, bla bla...and I'm the first to addmit that the Pro Junior gave me a tone whip lash!!
I'm an addmitted tube amp snob and the Pro Junior is the first cheap, mass produced amp that made me get off my high horse and admit that
it doesn't have to cost thousand of dollars to be amazing.
I have been on a quest to find a great sounding portable amp for over 15 years. It had to be light compact and sound great. Somthing I could
take to gigs without a car. Something I could just run up onstage with
if I was sitting in quick with the band.
Well, the Pro Junior is it. In my opinion, there is a lot of snobbery out there. I know, I was one of them. If people would just listen with their ears instead of their eyes you might find some great gems out there. I would buy the ProJR. again in a heart beat. In Fact, I own two Black tolex and the Woody and I'm now looking to find all
styles, white and tweed. Can't wait to run all 4 together onstage!!!
See you all on eBay!!!

This is a very simple amp. It has one tone control, a volume control and an on/off switch. Also, the internal speaker is hooked up to a 1/4" plug, so you can use it with another 8 ohm cabinet. I hate amps that have too many knobs, so I liked the simplicity of this one.

Don't fear the stock speaker. Mine has a brown label ceramic Eminence "v1030." It is a bright, "chimey" speaker and sounds good in this combo.

Sound Quality : 9
I use the amp with a p-90 equipped hollow body. I think it would sound great with any single coil guitar. I play jazz and blues, so the amp suits me well. It sounds like a vintage tweed amp. Also, the sound is very loud and distorts above about half way on the volume knob.

I tried swapping tubes, but that turned out to be a mistake. My amp hums like crazy with any pre-amp tube except the stock Chinese made 12ax7's.

Reliability : 6
The amp seems well made, except the tubes are mounted to a circuit board, and I hate when manufacturers do that. If Peavey can build a nice litte tweed amp with the tubes mounted to the chassis, fender should be able to do the same. Having said that, the tubes are at least above the chassis (not sunk down through it), and the board they are attached to is a separate board that is securely mounted. So the construction is still better than what you would find in a Marshall combo, based on my experience.

Customer Support : 6
I've never tried contacting Fender, and I have no idea how one would go about doing that. If you need help, I'd try where you are looking now (harmonyj-central) and the "Fender Forum." There is a lot of good information in both places.

Overall Rating : 8
I like this amp a lot. It sounds great, seems fairly well made, and is light weight to carry. If you want to go play over a friend's house, or practice in the bedroom, then this type of amp is perfect. I'm not sure I would go on the road and gig with it, but I'm not planning to do that anytime soon. I also think the Fender vintage series amps are better (i.e. the Deluxe Reverb, Bassman, Twin, etc.), but the Pro is a heck of a lot less expensive and much more portable. So its a keeper.

VERY IMPORTANT!!!
This is just a follow up to a review I did on 5/3/05, I left out a very important tip to those who would own a Pro Jr. new or old. Two out of three of these amps will sound EXTREMELY NOISY! This is not normal for this amp, but rather a flaw in the design of the back panel attached to the chasis. The middle screw is to long and actually touches one the the pots causing a short. Simply take the top middle cabnet screw out and the noise GOES AWAY!

It sounds brilliant with my strat, sg, and les paul.
It produces superb bell like clean tones.

After a well known "boutique" and very expensive amplifier with all kinds of circuitry started smoking then literally blew up on stage on me (still under warranty, luckily) I set out to find a simple club amp with great tone and found one, a slighty used tweed pro jr. with one excellent feature, "NO FEATURES"! I Iike the fact that it just has a volume and tone control, this is it's greatest feature!

Sound Quality : 10
I use Strats and Teles exclusively and this amp sounds great with both, I did however, add a jensen neo-100 10 in. speaker for MAJOR headroom. Makes a big diffrence! Works great for all styles and sounds really Marshally when cranked, Excellent!

I have not owned it long enough to submit an opinion, but i've done 12 grueling 4 hr. party gigs with no problems.

Probably not a big suprise, but i've owned a lot of Fender amps over the years and still have yet to deal with their customer support.

I've been a party band musician for going on 25 years now, and it's a relief to own an amp thats easy to carry, plenty loud, and simple enough to trust it. Just bought new in box, so probably built in 2003 in Mexico. Features have been covered a few hundreds time below. But one feature that I really like and use with the Pro Junior is that its own speaker is connected into a standard speaker jack. This is very hidden -- you have to turn it upside down in the back. But once you see it, you can easily enough pull it out to plug in another cab. This little feature convinced me this was the was to go, since I just wanted a very clean low-watt 'head' amp to go into my speaker cab for home playing.

I'm only giving this a seven, since the features are so spare. But I really wanted a pure and simple amp.

Sound Quality : 9
I only play at home, and this is my clean amp, and should be a really nice complement to my 'dirty' amp - the Zvex Nano Head. (Best amp I've heard for overdriven sounds.)

The cleans sound great. Not as great, IMO, as Deluxe Reverb or the Dr. Z amps I've heard. Probably better than the Peavey Delta Blues I had. The cleans sounds very good with the combo speaker, and great with my 2x12 cab, which has Celestion V30 and G12H30 speakers.

The other thing I'm very pleased with is how the Pro Junior makes my digital MagicStomp modulation settings sound warmer and more musical. I am VERY HAPPY with how my metal monster Warp Factor sounds with this guy!

I imagine I'd like a little more bass thump with the Pro Junior, but I haven't tried using my pedal EQs to compensate yet.

I cranked the Pro Junior into a cab at Guitar Center, and it sounded wonderful, but very loud. Haven't tried that at home yet, gotta' wait till everyone else is out of the house :)

Reliability : 7
Made in Mexico, huh? So far, nothing feels substandard about it. I haven't heard the bad hiss problems reported elsewhere here. It looks, feels, and sounds solid so far.

Don't know. Hope I don't have to know.

My amp is a 1994 Tweed covered PJ bought in Hong Kong with the ceramic speaker. The amp itself has a ply cabinet, single ten inch speaker, two 12AX7 valves, two EL84 valves, volume, tone, solid state rectifier, 8 ohm speaker output, light and a power switch.

The power amp is a class A/B design that kicks out about 15 watts. The preamp has two gain stages using the first 12AX7. The second 12AX7 acts as a phase inverter for the power amp. The circuit itself is a pretty simple design and is very tweed Fender like.

As you can tell this amp has few features to speak of.

Sound Quality : 8
I guess that a lot of peoples disappointment with this amp is that it doesn't have a typical Fender clean sound. By that I mean a very clean full blackface sound typical of the 1960s amplifiers. This is down to the circuit and valves. What sound this amp does offer is more of a 1950's Fender sound. The amp isn't super clean at lower gain settings and quickly starts to break up a third of the way up. Past half way and all the tubes are clipping a great deal and it only gets dirtier.

This amp is primarily suited to blues or rock'n'roll. It doesn't have the kind of gain needed for metal and isn't clean enough for Jazz at anything but the lowest volumes.

The sound does have a great deal of dynamic range with very little compression coming from the valves or the speakers. So the dynamics of your picking do vary the volume and break up a lot. It is easy to sound quite brash and sloppy with this amp if you don't have control over your dynamics. Certain notes jump out when other uncleanly picked notes keep quiet. I'm not sure if replacing the solid state rectifier would give the amp some compression and sag as this type of mod isn't easily achieved. Replacing the rectifier with a valve based unit requires replacement of the power transformer.

The small size of this open backed combo directly influences the sound making it boxy in nature. Small combo's just cannot sound big like a large cabinet. There is plenty of power coming from the amp to power a larger set of speakers. I myself am waiting for a Tweed Twin type pine cabinet to hold the power amp, I'll post the difference in tone as and when I can.

The circuit can be quite noisy. Particular problems are with AC hum. Having a decent set of preamp tubes can make some difference. My amp is loaded with Electro Harmonix 12AX7's and JJ EL84's. It is still quite noisey though by modern standards. A newer model PJ I tried out in my local guitar shop had a lower noise level. I suspect that aging capacitors are causing the extra noise in my amp.

In my humble opinion the amp sounds good. It has bags of real power amp distortion on tap if your ears can stand the volume levels. To achieve a nice level of overdrive within an apartment or terraced house you won't make many friends.

Reliability : 7
The construction isn't the best. Nowadays we have a plethora of well built point to point low watt valve amps to choose from. The PJ is a mass produced amp with PCB electronics. The valves are mounted on a PCB board too.

I have had to re solder the input jack once thanks to a dry joint and today I have experienced a horrid crackling staticy sound when the amp was turned right up. After reseating the power amp valves the problem went.

Doesn't sound too rosey but that's all the problems I have had in ten years of ownership.

Customer Support : No Opinion
No idea

Overall Rating : 8
I bought this amp because back in 1994 there just any other small valve amps available. Since then I have grown very found of it but realistically I would not buy one again. I would choose from the numerous small class a boutique amps that exist. This would no doubt cost me much more though than I paid for the PJ.

It's cheap, loud, bluesy and reasnobly reliable. If you have the extra cash buy something better.

This is a bare-bones two-knob (vol, tone) number w/ 2 EL84s (very un-Fender-y) for power. 1 x 10" speaker; printed circuit; light and easy to handle. If you need channel-switching, etc., get osmething else or use effects.

Sound Quality : 10
It's a total surprise of an amp -- this thing sounds great! It can be run clean and chime-y or overdriven to an impressive roar. Its performance is in utter contrast to expectations... a true little giant. AS many reviewers have noted, you need to ditch the complete crap tubes that come stock, as they are microphonic, noisy, and harsh, and since the lousy stock speaker (Eminence, I'm told, though I don't know for sure) will blow (literally and figuratively) you should definitely go for one of the vintage reissue Jensen's (bell cover won't fit; leave it off) and the result will be incredible! I have a whole bunch of boutique amps, including Champ-types (Top Hat)and though I am tempted to ditch the Pro-J to show off something spiffier, the little guy just cannot be put down. I have some good tubes in mine -- JJ EL84s (the best new tubes) -- and the sucker rules. At 15 watts, it's surprisingly loud and I've used in in mid-sized venues just fine. Really cuts. And the 10" has surprising bottom -- not tons of bass, but the Jensen does not get floppy (it's tight) and there seems to be plenty of power to drive the low end without letting the treble get shrill. Gotta love the junior. As other have noted, it sounds much better than its tempting "next size up" brethren. Leave your ego aside and let the little guy rock.

Reliability : 4
Gotta say that the original tubes and speaker suck. My speaker blew early on, despite never being really pushed, and the original tubes were utterly horrible -- sounded bad to begin with, lots of extra noise, etc. I assune Fender just threw in ultra-cheapies, unfortunately detracting from a great amp in order to pinch a few pennies. But heck -- the amp is a bargain, and even with the upgrades it's still a great, great deal. Once the tubes and speaker were swapped, the thing has run perfectly.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Fender? They'll honor their warranty; it's a huge corporation, so your treatment depends on your dealer. I didn't get any of my work done under warranty because I didn't want to replace the blown crap speaker with a new crap speaker.

Overall Rating : 10
This amp's a keeper, period. As I say, there's a lot of fancier stuff out there, but this guy's a versatile workhorse. It is a deal and a half. Also, there have been some cute options produced, like my white tolex version, that have visual appeal definitely lacking in the cheap-looking black version or fakey-vionatge tweed, if you can fine 'em.

IT's one of the first one made from what I can tell and has the original tubes so it couldn't have been use that much. It works great for me but being that it's Class A it probably burns through power tubes a lot quicker than Class AB amps.(EL84 aren't a big money item)

1994 Tweed MIA Pro Junior. It came with the brown Eminence speaker. This is a single channel, EL84, 15 Watt amp with just a volume and tone knob. Lots of folks tend to go with the Blues Jr. because all the extra features(MV, reverb), but this is just perfect. There is too much power for a bedroom/apartment amp and more than enough for gigs. The simplicity of this thing is beautiful.
The real reason I picked this up is that I gig often enough in NYC where lugging a big amp around is a problem. The weight and size of this thing is very nice for those of us with bad backs. I can go jam and throw this thing in the car or hop on the bus or subway with no real problems.

First thing I did was get rid of those noisy crap tubes it came with. It hummed and rattled like crazy. Had some balanced JJ EL84s and tried a pair of JJ's ECC83s tubes. Bob at Eurotubes recommended a balanced tube for the phase inverter slot. These knocked away the hum and some of the rattle. Took it apart and hand tightened every screw and it help quite a bit. Eventually I put an NOS tube in the V! slot and it absolutely crushes.
The Eminince speaker was not bad, but I felt like it got a little flakey at higher volumes. I found a Weber 10A125 for a song on ebay, took off the magnet cover in order to make it fit and have never looked back. I found the ten inch speaker,in general, a little boxy initially, but my ears adjusted to it and I found it to sound quite nice with my Holy Grail in front of it.
I basically play rock, roots rock in the style of Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt, Wilco and fool around with jazz from time to time. My main guitars are a 2000 G&L ASAT Special, an Ibanez AS180, and a 1991 MIM Strat. I usually run a fair amount of effects through my amps, but I've just been running a London Fuzz (Ge) and Holy Grail. I can coasx any type of rock sound I need out of this. At about halfway on both the volume and tone, this thing is too loud for my house. I can get Neil Young craziness out of it.
Here's the kicker. Try this thing through an extension cab. I have a 2x12 loaded with Reverend Alltones and its unbelieveable how loud it feels. I have used this for small clubs and will use it again. It will cut....just need to raise it off the ground.

Reliability : 9
The guitar input has been a little dodgey, but its given me no major problems. I've used it without a backup live and haven't had a problem. I will probably do so in the future for more NYC gigs.

I bought this used and wouldn't contact them anyway.

Been playing about 20 years. I've owned a fair amount of amps in my life. Basically, I got rid of a RI AC15 and replaced it with this. Frankly, I like this better. Shoot me. My other amp is a Reverend Hellhound 40/60 cmbo and I am getting a SF Deluxe Reverb.
If you are looking for a small portable affordable tube amp, give this amp a shot. The Blues Jr. is a nice amp and there are a ton of mods available for that, but with the PJ, just change the stock tubes and you have a very good sounding amp.

The Pro Junior is a very simple valve amplifier ala Fender vintage Tweed Champs. I purcharsed it exactly one month ago and it was made in Mexico eariler this year (2004).

Very basic layout - single channel 1x10" combo with tone and volume controls. Features 2 EL-84 and 2 12AX7 valves, line out (just unplug the speaker in the combo's cabinet), vintage cabinet / interface design.

I appreciate the simplicity of this amp - that's its beauty! Raw, powerful, beautiful tone. However, an effects loop would have been nice for time and modulation effects. I like to use reverb and octave pedals and while they sound good through the input, I know from my other, effects loop-equipped Fender amp (1987 Fender Deluxe 85 solid state) that they sound better through the loop.

Amp has plenty of power - clean tones don't require as much volume as overdriven tones to cut through. This amp really shines with clean tones, but the overdriven tones are brilliant. Just turn it up (like my old Squier Champ 15G dodgy practice amp!!! Not a flattering comparison, I know... I was merely referring to the controls, not the tonal quality...). Ahh... simplicity!!!

Sound Quality : 10
I play a variety of music - grunge and stoner rock, blues, classic rock, some fusion and some 80s metal. I use two Strats - one is a 2003 American Standard Strat and the other is a Squier Strat that I have rewired with custom pickup switching and tone controls (see Fender's Mr. Gearhead website for some great schematics on how to trick up your Strat - but don't wreck your 'Number One' guitar!!!).

I thought I had a pretty good tone with my old Deluxe 85. My friends loved it and are now clamouring to get a hold of it - no way! The Pro Junior does the clean thing just as well, but differently. Whereas the 85 has a very modern, but toneful sound, the Pro Junior sounds like a little Bassman or Vibroverb... has that lovely warm Fender valve amp tone.

Overdriven, the amp is brilliant - SRV, AC/DC, Zeppelin, Hendrix (with FZ-3 and wah) like tones are accessible depending on how you use the tone and volume controls on the amp and the tone and volume controls on your guitar. It's a marked change from the Deluxe 85 - it has so many knobs... but most setting are useles and only one or two are good. Fender seems to have captured the one or two good ones in this amp and so the lack of knobs is not really a pitfall at all, but a blessing! The two advantages the Deluxe 85 has over the Pro Junior are that it offers far more gain (well, it was made in the 80s) and so for tapping and legato licks it's great; the other advantage being the effects loop (see above).

Some have complained that the Pro Junior hasn't a reverb unit. Buy the Blues Junior if you want that - I tried the Blues and didn't like it. The reverb was nowhere near as natural or lush as my Deluxe 85's. I plan to get myself an RV-5 or Holy Grail.

Reliability : No Opinion
Seems dependable. I bought it in a city 1820km from my remote location and it survived the air trip (packed effectively within a tough case and in the fragile compartment of the aircraft). One valve had half-worked it's way out of the socket, but it just pushed it back in.

Fender dealers have been great with support in the past for my two other amps and three guitars so I can't imagine that will change anytime soon.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Fender has authorised dealers everywhere in Queensland except my town. No problems, however - I know that when I go into the city I can always take my gear into the guitar store I frequent and know that Rob, the manager / technician will either be able to fix it himself or know someone adequately qualified to do the job.

Overall Rating : 9
I have been playing for 9 years now. I own three amplifiers and three guitars - my pride and joy being my American Standard Strat with my Pro Junior. Effects-wise, I use mainly Boss pedals - FZ-3, NS-2, OC-2, MT-2 (although the MT rarely gets used these days). I also have a Crybaby wah and plan shortly to buy an EHX Holy Grail reverb or Boss RV-5.

If my amp got stolen I'd be shattered and would seek vengeance if / when I found out who stole it. I would purchase this amp if I had my time again. It's a lovely sounding amp at a reasonable price.

Extremely simple (on the surface): one knob for tone, one knob for volume...there are Boss pedals that have more knobs than this amp! It is still very versatile, because of 2 factors that really determine your tone: 1) hand attack/dynamics, and 2)the type of electric guitar you are using. The little amp just growls, too...really lush tube tone for a little amp. If you want clarity at a high volume, do not get this amp. If you want super-saturation at high volumes, play a humbucker through this amp at a high volume. A single-coil guitar at high volume, yields a nice blustery blues tone that still defines high-end chords well, like an E9, for instance...

Sound Quality : 10
II have played a Tele, Les Paul, and Danelectro through this amp with assorted pedals. Great rock and roll and blues sounds. from "0" to about the half-way point of volume, good country and jazz tone is available, as well. Also, the speaker jack is removable, making this a great talkbox amp. I sometimes drive a 1X12" speaker cabinet, and that is where this amp REALLY shines, when it drives something larger...more clean headroom. Great for the studio and small gigs!

I have taken my PJ to a wide variety of situations, and the little thing is strong, yet easy to cart around.

This is my 3rd PJ in 1 month. I took all back because of the very loud hum. They switched out the pre amp tubes and boom...the hum was gone. The pre amp stock tubes are worthless. Change them out with Electro Harmonix and it is so quiet.

Just simply a volume and tone control. I love those features! Me, being an obsessive compulsive, can't stand amps with lots of knobs. That leaves me constantly tweaking this and that. I love the simplicity of this amp. A single 10" Eminence speaker and single input jack. No line out or reverb, which is fine by me. Very light-weight and portable due to its size. Like the champs of old. Rating the features here is purely subjective to user tastes, but I will give it high marks because the simplicity is what I really love about this amp. And 10 being very versitile because it's clean first and there's no annoying high-gain you have to deal with like on other smaller combo amps.....

Sound Quality : 10
The sound is what I love about this amp. I know I said I love the portablility too, but when compaired to the bigger Blues Jr. (which is also a great amp) I prefer the sound of the Pro Jr. I've always wanted one of these amps ever since my Uncle had one several years ago. Why I fought off getting one in favor of something else, I'll never know. However, after finally coming to my senses and trying to clean up a Crate amp with lower output tubes, I just decided to say "the hell with it" and sold the crate and bought the pro. I truly love the sound of this amp. I also have an admiration of Weber speakers and while the stock Eminence speaker sounds good, I replaced it with a Weber Alnico. With this amps propensity to break up at half-way, I knew the Alnico would only add to the great tones of this amp. Could I get an even better sound re-tubing it? Well, maybe, but I love the sound as it is now. For low volume grit, I bought a Guyatone OD-2 and couldn't be happier. I now have the ultimate low-volume amp for me. For gigs and more punch, I have a Twin with it's own aresenal of pedals that can handle any volume I desire. The only problem with that dude is it's heavy and hard to get in and out of a car. Now I can tug along my Pro. for easy jamming at a buddies house without worry of a failing back being re-aggrivated by my sonic giant in my music room. I also have a Vibrolux on the way for situations that involve more power than the Pro Jr. but less power and more portability than the Twin. As you can see, I'm a bit of a Fender amp fan, but after having many different brands, I've always been unsatisfied with the other amps clean channels. I've found going clean first and then adding different pedals makes more sense to me. Not for everyone, but to my ear I am happy.

The Pro Jr. is a great sounding amp. I don't experience that buzz others talk about. Perhaps they fixed the problem. With the stock tubes and speaker, you can rest assured this amp sounds great. With the alnico, I get a bit more of the tweedish nature of these amps in full form. With it's ability to break up early, the speaker adds a more touch-sensitive dimension to my playing. My teles, SG, Semi-hollow and strats love this amp. And as I mentioned above, I could care less about not having reverb. On most smaller amps I've owned, the stupid reverb didn't work anyway. On top of that, I never used it much. The pure tone from this amp sounds too good to ruin it with annoying chimey echo. In addition, the surf is not up in Nashville. I don't use the reverb much on my Twin either. I'd rather run a subtle delay instead.

I can't express how happy I am with the sound of the Pro Jr.

Reliability : 10
Seems reliable enough. It's not an expensive amp, and it's made in Mexico, but from my understanding, the Mexican made stuff is fairly decent these days. Fender finally figured out how to get a bunch of mexicans to show up for work by buying them all alarm clocks, so that would explain the consistency. A simple circuit board layout and not much else to it leads me to believe as long as I don't abuse this amp, it should last for as long as I want to keep it.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never really had to use Fender support. I've heard complaints, but until they do me wrong, I won't complain. I won't make false claims either, so for now, it's a no opinion.

Overall Rating : 10
I sounded off in the sound rating category. I will reiterate this is a fine sounding small amp. For low volume level playing, this amp produces a lovely warm clean tone. Stock speakers, tubes and all. I do kind of wish the housing was a bit bigger to allow the natural warmth of this amp to resonate even more, but it's not a big complaint. I also had to remove the magnet cover of the alnico speaker just so it would barely fit. But it fits now and all is well. For higher volume, you will get a natural tube distortion that really sounds great. I find this amp to break up a bit earlier than the Blues Jr. despite it's identical output rating of 15 watts. But, the circuitry is different, and the smaller speaker probably has a lot to do with that being the culprit to its early break-up. Again, that's fine with me. I really no longer care for master volume amps. No, I'm not a vintage purist. I just hate having to fool with extra knobs. In addition, I've never had a master volume amp I've been completely happy with. I've had a couple of Rivera's that were nice, but their cleans still didn't meet the cleans of my Fenders.

The Pro. is a versatile, portable and great sounding amplifier that anyone can be happy with. If you like lots of gain, then the Peavy Classics and the Crate Vintage Clubs are not bad choices. If you need lots of headroom, then I wouldn't be looking at a low wattage amp in the first place. If you need portability, enough volume to do small sized gigs and a quick practice amp, the Pro is a great choice. The Blues Jr. is a bit more versatile and offers reverb and more headroom, but to my ears, I prefer the sound of the Pro Jr.

You'll also notice while these now sell for close to $300.00, they hold their value fairly well. You will see them on ebay for around $210-$250.00 which is pretty cool. If you look at the Peaveys and Crates, you will automatically seem them selling used for $200.00 less then they were purchased new for. Even the Blues Jr. doesn't seem to hold it's value quite as well.

1 jack, 2 knobs. This amp is better for not being infinitely configurable - it is what it is and does what it is meant to do, well.

Sound Quality : 10
I use this amp with a Schecter c1+ and a Line6 variax. It sounds good with everything except for the acoustic models on the variax - even the sitar sounds good. Note - this is a small tube amp, and it is all about power tube overdrive at volumes that do not violate city noise ordinances. You don't need a pedal - the tone starts straight up on both knobs and goes from there. And the tone is nice indeed. There is no bottom, so you won't get grungy nu-metal, but you do get amazing lead tone. This is a good thing in a traditional blues rock combo, as the parts of the frequency band that get amplified are in exactly the right place and you cut through a lot better than you think you would. The amp colors, but leaves the essence of your guitar behind. I generally use the guitar models on the Variax and the pickup switch on the schecter to get different sounds. Overdrive is, as you would expect, extremely dynamic and responsive to pick attack and the guitar's volume knob.

Reliability : 3
I am on my fourth Pro Junior. Number 1 buzzed sometimes. I eventually sold it because I thought I needed a bigger amp. Number two was horrid - it buzzed and hissed all of the time. Since I bought it new, I returned it to the store for warranty service, which took nearly two months. The tech never got it fixed, and obviously doesn't read this list. The third one was a loaner from the store, and sucked - it produced about 1/2 the volume of most juniors I've played and sounded flangy/out of phase-y. The fourth one was the new one fender shipped after utterly failing to fix number 2. It is perfect in every way - no hiss, no buzz, awesome tone and has been a consistent, durable amp that gets played out 2-3 times a week without incident for the past 6 months, give or take.

Customer Support : 3
Fender warranty service is a black hole. The amp goes in, but no information about repair status comes out without considerable prodding and cajoling. The shop that did the service work apparently doesn't stock the basics, like caps and tubes. Every diagnostic step had a 3-5 day wait whilst parts were shipped from somewhere in the Fender universe to the dealer. Frustrating.

Overall Rating : No Opinion
a bargain for the price. If its not loud enough, get another. I'd really like to have a second one to mod with a 2x12 celestion vintage 30 loaded cab, or just to play in series with number 4, but I'm not sure I'm up to the struggle involved in getting a good one. If it was stolen, I'd shop, but I'd probably end up buying another. Nothing close to the price does what this does as well as this does it.
