5 inputs, hi and low for bright and normal channels with a mix input that can mix both channels. Presence control and independent volume controls for bright and normal channels, bass, mid-range and treble. Pretty much a plexi type amp at 50 Watts with 2 EL-34's and 3 12AX7's. The only thing i would like it to have is an fx-loop and maybe reverb aswell but i'm not complaining because this thing sounds amazing.

Sound Quality : 9
this amp sounds great at lower volumes and it just sounds bigger and bigger the more you turn it up. i'm playing it through a 4x12 marshall cab. the natural tube overdrive is beautiful but if your looking for more of a metal distortion, it takes pedals just fine. You do get a little bit of noise when the amp starts getting cranked but any tube amp will when overdrived(more so with single coils then humbuckers). A great veriation of tones with the 5 inputs(i tend to use the mixed input). Great old rock and roll sound when cranked and a nice rich clean sound that can work well with blues of rock depending how your using the amp.

Reliability : 10
Hand wired(point to point or tag strip, can't remember which but both are superior methods of wiring). Built in the early 70's and still no problems. Had it serviced after I Bought it 2 months ago and only 1 cap needed changing. Built to last.

With old tube amps your better off going to your local amp tech.

Overall Rating : 9
Sounds great at any volume. Hand wired amp without the high price tag on it. If you know how to work with the volume on your guitar you can get a lot of tones out of this amp. If it was lost or stolen i would try to find another one though these are hard to come by. Too bad they don't make amps like they used to.

My amp is a 1970's model I would suspect. This amp is very similar to the four input Marshalls of the same and earlier time frame. As I run a recording studio this amp is very suited for certain tones from "edge of distrortion" blues tones to full on "crunch" power chords. This amp is a "master volume" amp (only one volume control) and is probably the most responsive to volume adjustments of any amp I own. I run the amp with THD "Yellow Jacket" tube substitution attenuators allowing me to crank it up without deafening the nieghbors (I still deafen myself!) This amp is extremely loud with the stock EL34's (One blown stock speaker latter!) I play hard rock and this amp is great for both lead and power chord work and, when the volume is backed off, the sound cleans up very well. The amp has five (!) inputs - two for a "bright" sound, two for a more "normal" sound and one that is a mix of the other channels. I find these features to be awesome. You've got "ice pick in the ear" bitting sounds on the bright channels, either distorting at lower volumes or higher volumes (depending on if you plug into the "lo" or "hi" sensitivity input. On the "normal" side you have a choice again between "lo" and "hi" sensitiviy. The "lo" gives you loud clean and BASS heavy sounds, plugging into the "hi" on the "normal" channel gives you awesome lead and rythym tones at any volume setting, moving up to earth shaking power chord aciton when in the "noon" to 5:00 am settings on the volume knob for that channel. Plugging into the "mixed" jack is the real treat. I usually plug into the "mix" jack and turn up till I get a nice purr going with the bass knob on "zero" and then bring in the "bright" channel to give the sound some bite and edge.... killer! No channel switching is available on this amp - although (as with multi input Marshalls) you could use an "A/B" footswitch to split your signal between the "bright" and "normal" inputs and simply use one for rythym and the other for lead. If I could any anything to this amp it would be an effects loop and a reverb function. When the amp is set to low volumes, it is really clean and dry, reverb would be nice for clean, low volume settings. I use all of the features of this amp. The amp has plenty enough power for me - too much in some ways - I blew the stock speaker running the two stock EL34's! (It sounded incredible before the speaker blew!) I bought THD Yellow Jacket EL34 to EL84 converters to tame it down and they did the trick. I think this amp would sound absolutely incredible thru a 4X12 Marshall 1960 cabinet. I WILL get a 4X12 one day! I beleive the amp is rated at 50 watts stock. Be carefull if you buy one of these as a combo, mine is a combo that came with the stock 15 inch speaker in a closed backed, ported cabinet. I think the stock speaker is the "weak link". You need to run this amp into a 100 plus rated speaker or cab to get the most out of it.... trust one blown speaker to prove it. Also of note is the fact that my stock speaker is an alnico model and is relatively ineffecient. There are many replacement 15 inch speakers available that you could use to upgrade this amp. I got my blown speaker re-coned to make it a one hundred watt rating.... good move!

I have used strats and humbuckers with this amp. Both sound good. Hummers seem to overload the input side of the amp when the guitar's volume is turned up past about eight. A stat and this amp is "blues plus".... great bite and touch sensitivity. This amp suits all music styles... it just depends on which channels you use and of course how you set the volume and tone controls. This amp has earth shaking lows!... and ear peircing highs. The only noise I get out of the amp is a hiss when the presence control is turned past half way, particularly on the "brite" channel. This amp can make all of the sounds any guitarist should need. I have not even attempted to push the "brite" channel past "noon" on the volume knob... don't want my wine glasses to shatter. The distortion leaves nothing to be desired, this amp rocks.

Reliability : 9
I took the amp apart after I bought it to clean it up and spray out the potentiometers. It is built like a tank and is very simple inside... (any local "tube guy" should be able to fix it if it breaks. I am running tube amps from the early sixties all of the time with no troubles and this one has as good as or better build quality than those amps.... Canadian built by hand with care and attention.... no worries. I would not take this vintage baby out to a gig.... recording only. No troubles other than "operator error" in my speaker blowing.... (suggestion.... plug a 4X12 into the speaker output jack and just "giv'r")The amp is from the seventies and still truckin.... is it realiable? Read the last sentence!

I've got Gar's book - "The How and Why of Tube amps according to Gar". Gar is the God (along with Pete Traynor) of Canadian guitar amps. The amps that Gar designed and manufactured at Garnet are worthy of all of the accolades they receive. They are second to none. Thanks Gar!
Warranty? Not applicable... and, no matter, simply, effective circuitry.

I have been playing for 25 years. I own a variety of amps - mostly tube, and a variety of effects (Pod2, Sansamp, RP-1, etc.) If it were stolen or lost I would be making the rounds to every pawn shop in town with intent to cause a problem. I love it's sounds... Hate? What's to HATE? (Replace the stock speaker or run it into a 4X12 to avoid the weak link of the stock speaker) I did not compare this to other products other than having knowledge that buyin a newer or older similar Marshall 50 watt amp would have cost me at least double what I paid. I did not choose this amp, it choose me. Any Garnet amp is worth looking at...

This head was made in 76 & is a early 50 watt Marshall JMP knock off.It is almost a dead on copy but has a master volume & an input jack that mixes the two channels together as opposed to useing a jumper cord.It had 2 sylvania EL34's & 3 Phillips 12AX7's.It's vesatility is geared towards the dynamics of your playing & the use of your volume pot on your weapon of choice.Bottom line,it's a Marshall & more.

I've owned lots of amps over the years,Marshalls,Boogies, soldano, etc.& they all have good things & not so good things about them.I've bought & sold so many that I,ve wished that I didn't.But one thing is for sure,I wont be selling this head.I am a strat player to a point of religion,& I've finally found an amp that makes my favorite strat sound thick beyond anything I ever plugged into before.Blending the channels is the key to getting the goods.I've had a 73 JMP 50 watt & it didn't sound as good as this & it was properly maintained & biased for the Mullard tubes that were inside.I can't obtain crystal clean but that wasn't what this amp was meant to do.It has great crunchy overdrive & when I boost the front end with a pedal it does'nt get muddy at all but retains definition for cool open chords. With My Marshall,if I cranked the volume of both channels,it would get muddy, but not the Deputy, even with all the volumes dimed it wouldn't get mushy at all'but I recommend that you keep the volumes at 12 o-clock to get the best tone.I use a THD hot plate to keep the sound guy fromm shaking his fist at me.If you see one for sale, buy it,& if you dont want it,Email me & tell me where to find it.Make sure that it is properly seviced before you make a decision to buy it because that makes all the difference in the world.I use an old Big Muff to boost my amps & have found it to be my favorite rig so far.

I've just got this head about 3 weeks ago but knowing Garnets are very reliable,I'm not worried,I get My amps serviced regularly.

I,ve been playing for a little more than twenty years now,& have played all sorts of gear from refrigerater racks to small combos & pedals. But my favorite rig is now the strat into the Deputy into a Marshall 4x12.If you love the strat into Marshall sound, check out the Deputy if you can find one.
