My quest for "the perfect cab" is over. I contacted Jeff Earl at J Design Cabs (www.jdesigncabs.com) after a long search for a 412 that would suit my many musical styles. I needed a cabinet that would work just as well for Jazz as it would Hard Rock or Funk. I spoke to Jeff directly via telephone (for nearly an hour) and what we came up with was a Chambered 4x12 (THAT'S RIGHT... FOUR SEPARATE CHAMBERS IN ONE CAB) with a Celestion Greenback, a Celestion Vintage 30, a Weber brand G12H30, and a Weber 1265.
I went with a Burgundy (wine) Tolex with wicker style grill like Marshall. The rear of the cab is closed back except for the greenback chamber portion which has an oval cut opening in it. It is wired so I can run all speakers at once, two at a time OR individually. (although I do have to switch the wires myself this is a feature I needed.)
I use this cabinet for practice, recording at my home studio as well as live shows 3-4 nights per month.

I have a few guitars and amps so I won't list them all but I mainly use an American Fender Strat, a Carvin Telecaster with Duncan Alnico II Pro's, and a Les Paul Studio with a Fender Hot Rod D, a Peavey 5150 and a Carvin Bel Air. My styles include Contemporary Jazz, old school Funk, Classic Rock, Blues, Country and Hard Rock. (that just about covers them all...) I get the tones that I want with this setup.
The clean tones for Jazz and Funk are very detailed and airy while the overdrive and distortion tones are meaty and full.

J Design builds cabinets that last. I removed the rear panel to check things out and it looks very sturdy. The cab itself is 3/4" multiply birch and the chamber dividers are clear Yellow Pine. I believe it is finger or dove tail jointed on the edges. Where the chambers meet the back panel there is tolex to seal the gap. Just really nice work throughout.

Customer service with J Design Cabs is second to none. I had email updates with a picture of the cab in it's raw state as well as a phone call when it arrived at my office. Jeff told me during our conversation that he builds every cabinet with great care like it is his own. I am a buisinessman myself and I know how important it is to establish a good relationship with customers. That really sold me.
There is a two year warranty on the entire enclosure and the speeakers are warranted throught the manufacturers. No problems foreseen.

After playing semi professionally for over a decade, I now play a few nights per month in clubs with two bands. I try to keep up on my chops for at least five hours per week and I record in my home a bit as well. (work, family, chores and age get in the way sometimes.)
I have accumulated a nice bit of gear over the past 30 years of playing and this 412 is a welcomed addition to that family of valued gear. I would replace it if something bad were to happen to it.
Jeff Earl is a very classy guy that builds a world class product. Highly recommended.
