It's a speaker - plain and simple. It has a frame, a voice coil, a magnet, and a paper cone - what more features do you want?

Mine is 8ohm, 20W.

Sound Quality : 10
I put this a heavily modified VJr - blows away the stock speaker and any others I have tried. It doesn't really sound like an 8" to me, it has more body and smoothness than you would expect from a tiny little speaker.

This amp has hardly any clean headroom so I wanted something that would sound nice overdriven. This is does very well. From a light bit of crunch with a strat to some heavy power tube distortion with a LP it handles it like a champ and gives a nice mellow fuzz like Jensen claims. The highs are still articulate and ring and separate nicely but are not harsh or shrill or metallic sounding like other 8's I have tried. This speaker really does have a beautiful upper midrange. The bottom end is fairly loose but not to the point of sounding farty or muddy, it just takes a little more finesse to work the thicker strings. I thought the low end note separation was great though even with alot of crunch. It sounds better than the demo on Jensens site.

The volume is very low, this speaker isn't very efficient. This was perfect because the amp it is in is a practice by myself amp - I want it to break up and not be too loud. Never even begins to strain the ears.

Reliability : No Opinion
Not going to gig it. Only putting 5W into it so I don't think it will ever be an issue.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Don't know - don't plan on ever contacting them.

Great, Cheap, Speaker!

I think it sounds better than many more expensive 8" models.

I usually use 12's so it is a big deal for me to actually like an 8". This one thinks it is a 12" (or at least a 10")!

Made a 4X8 cab for a GT60 Hartke driving 4 of these speakers that were rated a 4 ohms,20 watts each.Speskers made in Italy,go 4 of them for 15.00 each off Tube Depot.Homebuilt cab sealed design was made from 1x12 solid pine with finger joints for all sides/top/bottom,5/8" cabinet grade playwood front and back.Cab measured 20"X20"x11 3/4".Tolex covered, weights 20 pounds.GT 60 sits perfect ontop of it.

Sound Quality : 8
Cab driven by GT60 sounds very good, but alittle boomy on bottom end.Was able to compansate with amp tone controls.Tired driving cab with the following amps to se what it sounded like,80's Peavey SS65 watt Bamdit,Peavey Triumph 120 watt all tube, homebuilt SE 6L6 around 10 watt all tube head.Cab sounded very good overall with all of them. For a 15.00 speaker it really has nice sound. My only complaints is 1 driver alone sounds alittle thin, and tinny. The sound completely changes in a sealed cab.

Reliability : 8
Have used Jensens for over 30 years.I don't know about the New and imoroved non-american made drivers. The Itlian made ones seem fine in craftsmanship and sound."Far better than any Chinese speakers I have listened to."

Customer Support : 5
I don't know, have not had to deal with them. For a 15.00 Speaker,it would cost more in S&H to send it to get fixed then throw it out and buy new and replace it!

Overall Rating : 7
For the money a great value. If you are looking for a single 8" speaker as a replacement with deep.booming base pass this one by.If you are putting them in 1X8,2X8,or 4X8 SEALED or tune ported cabs its a great guitar speaker.Open backed single ,pass it by.

Amp in question is a 70's SF Champ. Purchased from eBay for $160 US. All original including speaker and tubes. New 3-prong plug was attached as original showed signs of wear. Amp was easily an 8.5 out of 10 despite the worn power cord.

Champs are simply fantastic bedroom/ recording amps as they distort so well at such small volumes. Great honest and open tone means that your playing (and all possible mistakes) are not hidden behind a high gain, compressed tone like with more modern amps. There are times that I long for some tube reverb with this amp but other than that it is simply perfect. I have resisted the urge to do the "tweed mod" as even these 70's SF are gaining value and I prefer to keep mine unmolested. It was not that long ago that 70's Strat's were thought to be garbage and would never be collectable. Food for thought!

Except for this fantastic Jensen Mod 8" speaker that is!!!

Read on!

In keeping with this review the main "mod" was the addition of a Jensen Mod 8" speaker. New tubes were added as well but the speaker really changed night from day with this amp.

I too purchased my Champ after hearing so many greats using one and then never saw what the fuss was about.

The tone was bland and sort of solid state as well. Then again the original Fender speaker was by far the amps weakest link. I recall connecting mine to a 2x12 and then hearing great ?alive? tones. Replacing the stock speaker with this Jensen brought back that punchy 12" tone. No doubt about it, this should be a prerequisite buy with all Champs. This is the best $20 investment that you will even see.

The regular collection of Strat's and a few humbucking guitars as well. This is no high gain amp so Metallica riffs are pretty much out of the question. Think blues to perhaps some 70's rock and you see where this amps tone generate from.

Reliability : 7
In all likelihood one of the simplest circuits out they?re in regards to service and repair. Smallest amount of TLC ensures that your Champs lasts for decades.

Driven with a simple Boss OD pedal (or even a Marshall Guv'nor if you can score one) yelds a sonic palate of great tones. Naturally Clapton's Layla tone lurks within but so do many many more.

Think the likes of Eric Johnson, Joe Perry and such great company. Watch even these SF puppies start to fetch $500 to $700 within less than a decade.

8 inch, 4 ohm speaker. If you are considering replacing your original Champ (or whatever) speaker with this, do it! I disliked my old 70's chrome face Champ for the last 10 years, thought it was over rated, and was going to sell it on eBay. I purchased this 20 dollar speaker and installed it in five minutes. Then...oh my god... the amp sounded INCREDIBLE.

Sound Quality : 10
The original speaker was dry rotted, so it's hard to compare. It's voiced on the darker side, more like a 12". With the treble on 10 and bass on 0, my Danelectro sounds chimey but not brittle. My Gretsch rings and rings. With the treble down and the bass up some, it even does my basses well. All of this is on "loud bedroom level" of course.

Reliability : 10
It's rated much higher han the Champ output, I'm sure it'll be fine.

I just posted this review because there was none. If you are considering the MOD 8, go ahead and buy it. It's an excellent replacement speaker. Give'r all eight inches.
