Made in early 2008. I found out about Don Jones while reading about Kerry Livgren, that Don built Kerry's amp, and decided to go for it. All point to point handwired, there are two pre amps, one a Fender clean type, and the other is a Marshall plexi type. Both pre amps feed into a common power amp. Each channel has it's own input. There is no internal channel switching. I use a Barber Launch Pad, which works great as an AB footswitch. Awesome! Each channel has vol, treb, mid, and bass. The dirty channel also has a master vol and also has a footswitchable gain boost. There is also a global presence. One of the coolest features is the gain and slope controls for tayloring the dirty channel. These controls are on the back. The gain control allows you to dial in the amount of gain boost....from sublte to "plexi on steroids". The slope control allows you to "tighten" or "fatten" the overdrive/distortion gain boost. Very flexible, very cool.
The amp was placed in a Bluesbreaker 2X12 cab made by MOJO. Very nice.
Tubes are 2 6L6, 4 12ax7. Rectifier is tube GZ34, or solid state plug-in. Quad of 6V6gt's can also be used for the power section.
There are 2 speaker outs with selectable 4, 8, 16ohm impedance.
The amp came with Jensen MOD50's in it. Don gave me the option of putting in any speakers I wanted, but since I couldn't decide until I had the amp in my hands and ears, he suggested the Jensens to start with. Good call, they weren't a big investment, and they gave me the chance to play through the amp for a while before investing in better speakers.
There is no reverb or effects loop and I haven't missed them too much....although reverb with the Fender would be awesome.
The amp puts out about 35 watts.

Sound Quality : 10
I play both Strat and LP guitars and love classic rock and blues. And this amp delivers that and more. I was really looking for the ovderdriven/distorted tone of Kerry Livgren, both from his Kansas days and now Proto-Kaw. This is a 35 watt verson of the 100 watt amp that Don made for Kerry. Thus the "KL" in the amps name.
The gain channel can go from just breaking up all the way to full on Marshall crunch. The boost can take it beyond that, but not to metal territory. The gain and slope controls are awesome here....lot's flexibility.
The clean channel is CLEAN, and plenty loud. It also takes pedals extremely well.
Both channels became what I was really looking for when I found better speakers. After trying Reverend 1250 Alltones, which were better but not great (highs too spikey, sharp), I settled on a Scumback H75/M75 combo. These literally transformed the tone & dynamic response of the amp to simply awesome. Nice round, clear, glassy cleans. Thick, chunky, dynamic classic overdrive/distortion.
Again, the dirt channel is of the classic flavor, not the modern type.
Also, because of the 2 channel inputs and the flexibility in tayloring the boost function, the volume for both channels can be easily adjusted so one doesn't overwhelm the other.
The amp is very quiet. There's some noise when the boost function is engaged, but nothing annoying or noticable in a live setting.
I'm giving this a 10 because it gives me exactly what I was looking for, excellent cleans and classic rock tones.

Reliability : 10
Point to point handwired in a quality cab....I'd only bring spare tubes to a gig. I've had the amp for 10 months....no issues, except for the infamous 6L6 tube rattle with some tubes. You can dial in some huge bass!
I've tried several different types of 6L6's...super easy to adjust bias via the trim pot.
I have complete confidence in the amp. The only thing that's been replaced is the power-on indicator bulb. Bought a 5 pack for less than 10 bucks.

Customer Support : 10
Don was great during the whole process of making a KL model amp just for what I needed. I wanted a combo in the 30 watt power range and he delivered. If the amp ever needed major repair I'd simply have to send the chassis to him. But I'm also confident that most things could be done by a local tech.
I have no reservations about calling Don for any help or with any concerns. He is a plaesure to deal with.

Overall Rating : 10
Been playing for a long time, amost 30 years...should be better than I am. I have no interest in looking for another amp designed to deliver classic rock Marshall tone. This amp replaced a Reverend Kingsnake 1X12 combo which was designed to deliver the same thing. The reverend was a very good amp, but this KL30 just has that extra dynamic depth and considerably more gain. If/when I'm in the market for another amp to get another sound, I'll be calling Don. And BTW, his price for putting this amp together made it a no-brainer. Call him yourself, tell him what you'd like made, and you'll see. The other amp I was considering was a Genz Benz Black Pearl, but when I found out that a Don Jones is what Kerry Livgren plays through I was sold. This gets a 10....I got a LOT of amp for the money!!
