I play metal, all sorts of it.With this amp and a good effects processer, you can get maiden, accept, and OLD priest like sounds.Unless you are running stomp box or some kind of pre amp(rp 10 or something)you will not get good DEATH metar or power metal tones from this.I run an rp 10 by digitech into the low gain input. The sound I get is nothing short of amazing(metal wise).I use bc rich and jacksons with emg 81`s.Running into marshall 1960 cab,and a crate cab with eminence 50wt.I get some good cleans too. This set up is a perfect match. The rp 10 by itself or into any other amp sounds thin, running into the laney, that is compensated for by the stupid amount of bass boost on amp.In this respect I give the sound an 8.9.By itself I find the amp lacking the high gain of some other heads I`ve heard(aor 100,mesa duel and triple rect.5150,and gl 100 laney).
It is very loud for a 50 watt.

I use this with a crate 4x12 cabinet, fender strat with seymour duncans and have no complaints. My second amp head and I can't use anything else! Great 4-8-16 ohm switchability.

Bought used in 1997 and used for 1 year with no problems. It started making "farting" noises and crackling. I replaced the tubes with new ones and have had no problems since!

I bought this amp used in 1996. I paid about 250.00 It has a decent effecs loop. Great cranked amp sound. Kind of like a Hot Rod JCM 800. It has a wild bass boost feature that can blow a 4X12 if your not careful with it. It has 2 EL34s and 4 12AX7s. I think the amp sounds best with a laney or marshall cab. I currently use it with a Hartke 4x12 guitar cab that has aluminum speakers and for some reason the volume is alot lower then if you used a celestion or fane based cabinet.

I think this amp sounds best with a gibson with humbuckers . Im use to useing mesa boogie amps. But for a EL34 based amp it sounds pretty good better then a JCM800. The distortion is very good, like a hotrodded marshall.

A basic, simple TUBE amp. Eight knobs. Presence, Bass, Middle, Treble, Master Volume, Preamp 1 Level, Preamp 2 Volume, Preamp 1 Volume. The Bass, Middle, and Treble controls boost when you pull them. Pulling Preamp 1 Volume boosts distortion and activates Preamp 1 Level. Why pulling "Preamp 1 LEVEL" rather than "Preamp 1 VOLUME" activates itself is a question I don't have the answer for. This is the only footswitchable function. No reverb. No chorus. No special goodies. Strangest part of this: It has two inputs, one for high and one for low sensitivity. "Low" a good clean sound, and "high" has great distortion. Why can't you switch between them without physically unplugging the cord and changing inputs??????????????? If this was possible, you wouldn't be able to buy one. A store wouldn't be able to keep them in stock.

You have two sound choices here: 1. A clean sound without "Preamp 1 Level" And a whimpy distortion with it on. Or... 2. An excellent true, tube distortion. Boston, to Aerosmith, to Heavy Metal, to New Rock (I will not use the word Alternative). Not just for classic rock, but I think classic rock guitars sound the best, and that's what this distortion is, THE BEST. But, don't even try to use the clean channel when "Preamp 1 Level" is activated

Would buy it again, but not for a clean amp. If you know what you want: a tube amp with one SUPERIOR distortion channel, this is for you. It does not have the effects some desire, but the distortion makes up for it. In my eyes a one channel amp, but it can be used as two, just not the same sound quality. For half the price of a Marshall, and a distortion which sounds better than one if set right, I would buy a second one. My recomendation: For an ideal setup use this amp for distortion, and another brand for clean. Hey, for this, the price is worth it.

The amp is fairly versatile and incredibly loud. It has chanel switching that can go from clean to hardcore (& I mean hardcore). Ilike the effects loop and the push/pull tone settings (although the bass needs a bit toning down!

The sound is beautiful for all types of rock playing. The clean is clean and the distortion is top notch!

The only problems I have had with it was a bad preamp tube when I bought it (about 7 yrs ago) & dirty contacts on the effects loop.

Good dealer support a 1st (instant replacement on preamp tube). Hard to find a repairperson that knows them, although they are becoming more popular.

Killer amp, gets a nice hardcore sound. The next amp I'll probably but for myself is a Mesa Boogie after trying a TriAxis.
