I bought this amp after my old Marshall Valvestate gave up the ghost.
I only use it for my students to go through when I am teaching and a bit of fun myself. I use a Pod for home practice normally (see review) and Laney and Mesa Boogie amps live.

The amp has a good set of features on it for the money and just about anything I need to give my students the sound they are after for the lesson.

Comes with a very sturdy footswitch.

Sound Quality : 6
Ok, presets (to my ears anyway) sounded rubbish. This is an amp that needs to be tweaked - a lot.
The effects are ok but not very subtle and difficult to control. They 'morph' into one another and you can't edit much at all apart from the rate/time with the 'tap' feature. Reverb is nice sounding.
You can get some nice clean sparkley sounds out of this but it's clear that the overdive/distortion is aimed at metal.
I spent a long time trying to add more mid and get rid of that 'scooped' nu-metal sound. If that's what you're after - great. I ended up with some passable sounds.

This amp tends to have a lot of bass to it (especially in distorted sounds) that is hard to tame. The EQ reacts in a very odd way and takes a while to get used to, ie - sometimes turning down the bass actually increases it to my ears..

The 'insane' settings may be good for a teenager trying to impress their mates, but to me are totally unusable and gimmicky.

If you put a really good overdrive pedal in front of the clean channel on this amp - it can sound quite good. I have used this amp to get me out of several tight spots for rehearsals when my valve amp has been out of action. I note several others recommend using external pedals for overdrive. HOWEVER, surely the point of a modelling amp is that you DON'T have to put other pedals etc in front of it, isn't it supposed to give you those sounds anyway?! It was definately my Keeley pedal making the amp sound good, not the other way round..

Reliability : 9
Have owned it for a couple of years and have no problems so far.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never had cause to deal with Line 6.

Overall Rating : 7
For the price, you get quite a versitile practice amp with a nice selection of features - some more usable than others.
For what I use it for (teaching at home)it does me well. It's far more flexible than my old 2 chanell Marshall valvestate that I bought it to replace.

The bass is very hard to tame though and this amp is definately aimed at metal players.

I would never dream of using this type of amp in a gig situation as I have my tube amps for that, but for the money and what market it's aimed at - it does a respectable job.

Many have problem with line6 product on coold and/or humidy(water on air). The solution is:In some electrician store you can buy special spray which will protect from water. This is not a plastic spray!
Knobs are very good protected from breaking!

All Line6 product are from KOREA!The overall finish is like a s**t!
Everybody have so much to tell about Behringer from China, but they must be for example how guitar amp must be made!Exept knobs are very bad pozition for break by transport.
Maybe help if they produce Line6 in China.
Faceplate are from plastic-Behringer from metal.
Case are not very strong-Behringer they have.
Power amp don`t have aluminium radiator cooling-Behringer they have.
They don`t have line in/out,cd in,midi...
Average tolex-behringer have better one.
But it is looking nice from distance.

I'm just a hobbyist, playing mostly at home, sometimes jamming with friends, & this combo was just the ticket: it covers a lot of ground, & within minutes you can get some decent sounds - jazz, blues, rock, whatever - loud enough to compete with a drummer.

Sound Quality : 9
I use a Gibson 335 & a Telecaster Custom, & mostly want a clean or just-breaking-up sound: this amp delivers. Nice bluesy distortion too. If you want to make a big noise, this does the trick, though there is a lot of feedback on the heavily distorted settings. Most of the choices made for the effects are intelligent & usable - though you could quibble with the chorus (I use the phaser more). The "insane" setting is a bit silly, but then I don't play noise-metal.

Reliability : No Opinion
The amp seems to have a life of its own: the volume settings can fluctuate wildly from one channel to another. You sometimes get a loud click when switching on the effects.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Not used it.

Been playing for nearly 3 decades now (ouch!) - till now I used a Peavey Backstage plus, a V Twin pedal & some effects. This amp is an affordable all-in-one package which I would highly recommend. Sure, there is better (& more expensive!) gear, only a valve amp is a valve amp & so on, but if you're more interested in playing than fiddling with your equipment (no gear-head I) & don't want to spend too much money, this won't disappoint.
I love the fact that now all I need to get out there & play is a guitar, a lead, & this amp.

I play a wide range of styels and consider myself a tone scientist. I am using 3 different Strats including a 68. I also own a Fender Power Chorus, a Twin reverb and a Sidekick Switcher so I have a wide range of amps to compare the Spider to. Let's just say I hate "vintage" tone snobs and SRV/Hendrix freaks. Those people will never be happy with anything because they have no voice of their own. They are not musicians, they are nothing but librarians.

I like experimenting with different combinations of equipment and there is nothing like owning a ton of equipment. I am not a retard expecting this amp to replace a wall of Marhsalls or making me sound good by hiding my shittiness. It's a 50 watt 1x12 combo and for what it is I was truly blown away. I was trying out the Schecter PT Tele when I saw the deal sitting on the floor. $140 used for this amp, I had to try it out.

I was very impressed with the tones the amp was delivering to me. I have a POD in my home studio which i use for most of my recorded guitar tones, I have always been happy with this piece of gear. I wanted a version that I could mic up for recording and this amp was it. The Schecter PT was just sterlar on every setting. My wallet fell about half out of my pocket when i played the clean tone on the amp. So clear and so crisp, I love that tone. So since I have been a Strat player for 20 years I decided to pick a used Strat off the wall to give her a go. The Strat was a complete pile of shit but the amp still sounded good in all settings. I won't go over all the settings because other people have done a great job of that already. The bottom line is I have a studio versatile amp that I can run guitars, bass and keyboards through for recording. I write dark ambient electronic music but my training is about 20 years of jazz/blues playing. I am quite sick off all the egos surrounding blues and jazz players I disowned them in favor of stuff that I find more fun to write.

I am very impressed with all the settings on this amp and I view as just one more voice I can use to my tonal advantage. I can use it for band rehersals and bedroom practicing as well as hooking it up to the studio gear and pulling new sounds from less traditional instruments. It's truly a deal that shouldn't be passed up. I feel sorry for the knuckle-walker guitar retards who couldn't find something to like about this amp or Line 6. There is nothing worse than close minded musicians.

Nothing is perfect so it gets a 9 but that is a proud 9.

My influences are: Danny Gatton, Richard Thompson, David Gilmour, Duane Eddy, Chet Atkins, Django Rheinhart, Rory Gallagher, Howlin' Wolf, Dj Food, Amon Tobin, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, James "Blood" Ulmer, Speedy West, Robert Ward, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Yes, The Herbalizer, Dialated Peoples, Boards of Canada, Bill Frisell, Steve Hackett, the Beatles, Peter Gabriel, the Who, the Clash, SquarePusher and GodFlesh.

My influences do not include: Eric Clapton(the man hasn't done anything good since the days he was shooting heroine), Jimi Hendrix(though I can listen to him), SRV(a funny hat does not make you a good guitarist), John Meyer(owning a bunch of coveted Strats does not make you a good guitar player), Eric Johnson(spending more time on tone than the tune), Steve Vai(having a fan on stage just for your hair to fly around is silly), Metallica(more like Washedupica), and my least favorite...Dave Mathews because he sounds like he has shoved a tumpet down his throat and up his ass.

Just so you folks can grasp the kind of stuff I have floating around my head.

Reliability : 10
No problems.

Customer Support : 5
Never had to use it. The website has a good amount of resources.

Overall Rating : 9
It's nice to see companies thinking outside of the box. I feel there are enough SRV, Hendrix and Elvis impersonators to cover the world ten times over. It's tough to find someone who truly has their own voice. This amp only gives those who use it more options to incorporate into their voice. This amp serves as a great tool for many situations but like everything it is not a fix for shitty playing. If you are having trouble with gear and your tone you should look at yourself, the tone comes from you and your fingers so if there is any problem at all it is most likely the player at fault. I hope this amp brings me many years of enjoyment and it will fit right in with all the rest of my "orphans" that are my "aces up the sleeve". Those who don't get it...go on and keep playing others peoples music.

I just had to write in about this amp...I have had it for two years and i have to say this is the best alternative to lugging around my Marshall heads and 4 12 cabinet i have ever Played !! The effects onboard are all perfect in every way for such an inexpensive amp.
My amp is the Spider 1 12 50 watt.

I would suggest spending the extra dough to get the pedal board with it,the wah and switchable chorus and delays and power boost are worth the extra money.

Sound Quality : 10
The ability to have 4 or 5 different sounding amps in one tiny package is wonderful to say the least. The clean and twang can be tweeked to sound like a good old fender tweed, Crunch is just ok, but the recto and insane have nice solid sound with a low end bass sound that is hard to believe. The recto for example sounds just like my 1980 2204 50 watt marshall head, and the insane sounds just like my 1991 JCM 900 of course it takes a little tweeking of the knobs and the subtle use of my OCD fulltone overdrive pedal....But man can this amp cook when you have it in the zone.I use Gibson les paul pro& SG guitars, Fender Stratocaster& Tele (american)And the sound with single coil or double make no difference..very little hiss and feedback.
You can even get a Brian May Queen sound like the little vox 10 watt i have through this amp using the recto and overdrive pedals.

Reliability : 10
Have not had one single problem..

Customer Support : No Opinion
N/A never had to talk to them or use the repair service.

Overall Rating : 10
I should mention that i tried the Spider 2 amp at home with all my gear and was sorely dissapointed that is partly why i did this review. The spider 2 was no where near the standards of the first.Buy the original not the new version Trust me the Marshall modeling on the 2 is pure crap compared to the recto and insane settings on my amp.
I use mostly boss pedals DD2 delay, super chorus,OD1,DS1,OCD Fulltone,NS1.(Power soak 1983).Marshall Cab's celestion 4/12 2204/JCM900 Marshall Heads.
Have played 25 years(rock) allways used Marshall amps. And thats why i like the Spider amp it is the closest thing to a Marshall sound you will find in a small inexpensive amp!

I bought it the first year they came in production (5 years ago?) This is a very versatile amps it nails the vintage fender type sound perfectly (i owned a fender deluxe reverb 1974 at the same time) i could match the deluxe reverb sound pretty close. You have two vintage marshall model. and two mesa type souds. Effects Chorus /flange/ tremolo(who use tremollo?) delay+pingpong (mono amp not good for ping pong)/reverb. 1 12" speaker. 4 chanels
If you buy the pedalboard you have 12 chanels + tuner + wha + volume.
+hidden function (tap button + another button) Boost + dist Boost +noise gate+ presence.

You really have to read the manual to understand alle the feature.
I gave a nine cos there is 2 feature missing (fx loop) if you want to bypass the built in FX + speaker out (you can not put an extension cab on this one

Sound Quality : 9
I used with that amp : aria fl10-gibsons SG-fender strat-epiphone les paul-ibanez studio-godin SD et XTSA yamaha RGX-AEX etc...
The trick is to program a sound for each of your guitar. EXP (bank 1 for humbuker guitars Bank 2 for Single coil) etc. Tube vs Solid state. I had a 1974 deluxe reverb and i sold it. I think the real question is do you like the sound? the answer is yes! This amp sound really good but you have to learn to use the hidden fonctions and the controls to bring it to its full potential. I can get much better sounds now than 5 years ago. The only sound i never get was the marshalls from the eighties i never found a setting that convinced me. One cool thing it always sound the same (my old fender sounded good some day but some other day it sounded crap) (you can put overdrive pedal in the front end it sound good)

Reliability : 10
I had it for 5 year nothing broke. i used it for recording only.
Once i tough the tune was broken (my fault you can not go to the tuner when in edit mode)
If you think you have a problem reset the factory preset!

I don not know

I started playing in 1988. I mostly do home recording. This amp is perfect for home use or small gig (Plug in the P.A.) this amp is ideal for what it is built for versatility and reliability. If you think it needs more headroom or it is not loud enough buy a bigger amp. I bought a lot of gear in the past, i always managed to make good sounds of of the cheapest junk. you just have to work at it. If you are not sure about a product do not buy it!

I really love this amp (i gave nine because the missing FX loop and no speaker out socket)

Bought it new in 2002. It's fairly versatile and loud enough for rehearsal or a small venue if you run it through the PA. You already know about the rest of the features.

Sound Quality : 5
Have a Fender Tele and an Aria LP Copy rigged with Gibson "57 Classics. Can get a good sound with all but the Crunch and Recto models.

Reliability : 2
Have used this amp out and about since I bought it, but with great care. It totally smoked during sound check at our last gig. Volume was set at half way, channel was on Clean and I switched to Blues and the smoke poured out and filled the room. I had just enough time to call a good friend and get a back-up. Line 6 says it will send(get this) a "refurbished board" for $150.00 and the local service tech. wants to charge $ 50.00 to install. New Spider 2 112's are selling for $299.00 in the MUSIC CATALOUGES. Go figure.

Customer Support : No Opinion
My tech would know more about this. He did mention that it took a while to get a response. He sounded totally frustrated with the whole deal.

Overall Rating : 3
OK for the money . I just wish it would have lasted longer. Time to spend a few more bucks on a " real" amp. I just bought the floorboard for this thing too, and now it is useless. Lesson learned I guess. I may sell "as is" on E-BAY for cheap, so keep an eye out if you need the spare parts. Ciao!

This amp is supposed to be top of the line in versitility, but I think it lacks in features. Sure it has the 6 amp models, effects, and a whole bunch of cool toys, but it's lacking in usefull features. It has no external Speaker jacks, a slave output would be nice, and so would an effects loop. Using any type of effects pedal is useless, especially distiortion pedals.

The effects need more controll, they are nice, sound decent (yes I like the flanger too), but the effects in themselves arent all that versitile.

The amp is pretty loud, I used to play at band practice and did a few gigs with it, it has quite a lot of power. Just remember, loudness is measured in decibels, not watts, I've seen louder 30 watts, and quieter 65 watts's.

The programable channels are pretty nice, VERY handy, so you dont hafta worry about your setting getting screwed up when the knobs get turned around in transporting.

I play metal, some blues, and it fits my style very nicely, My favorite amp models are Recto, Crunch, and Clean.

Sound Quality : 6
I play a hamer slammer explorer with an EMG-81 and a Dean ML-X with an EMG-81 in the bridge and an EMG-60 in the neck.

On all the models the tone controlls really dont effect stuff much, you'd never notice if the treble was all of a sudden turned half-way down.

Clean - I like the clean sounds, you can hear how it mimics a tube amp, and at high volumes it doesn't distort.

Twang - Supposed to model a fender blackface and bassman, I've never played either so I can't compare, but on it's own it's a nice tone, not very interesting to me, but good for country n stuff.

Blues - Based on a '65 Marshall JTM-45 Bluesbreaker. I like this setting a lot, at higher gain settings it sounds nice n grungy. It lacks soul though, needs more punch.

Crunch - Based on the '68 50 watt Marshall Plexi. This is one of my favorite models on this amp. Has a nice punch and a very crunchy difinitive tone, reminds me of Corrosion of Conformity.

Recto - My personal favorite setting, Based on the infamous Mesa/Boogie Dual Rectifier, I own a Dual rectifier, you really can't compare this setting to a Dual Rectifier running through a 4x12 cabinet, the handbook describes this setting: "sort of like a 4x12 that'll fit in a volkswagen". While it IS reminiscent of a rectifier, it lacks the warmth and headroom of a real rectifier. Though it has an awsome tone to it, it is NOT comparable to a half stack.

Insane - I do NOT like this setting, I play metal and I think this setting is horrible. The handbook describes it as "sort of like the rectifier with a distortion pedal" but a rectifier with a distortion pedal would still have TONE, it lacks bottom end, theres no headroom, it sounds like nails on a chalkboard. Gain is nice, but this is just crap.

Now the effects:
Flanger - Weak, or subtle, depends how you look at it, it's nice for a bit of background effect, but has no real versitility.

Chorus - a strong chorus, sounds nice, but it'd be better if it had a level controll.

Tremelol - again, it's lacking versitility as a stand alone effect

Delay, Tape Echo and Ping Pong - 3 different delays, the tap tempo is nice on the foot switch, thats handy, I had wished instead of 3 different delays they would of focused on fewer effects with more control.

Reverb - Yuck, sounds so digital, enough said.

Overall it's a very versitile sounding amp, and the models on there own are pretty nice, but they all mimic other amps, it's like Elvis impersonators, although they may sound good, they'll never be the real Elvis. I gave this amps sound a 6, because it's lacking real Professional sound, but it mimics it decently.

Reliability : 7
I originally bought a spider 210, but I had a problem with the amp, it would make a loud crackling sound, So it got fixed and it happened again, so I took home the 112 after that and didn't have a problem for many years, and that was in 99.

Fast foreward to 2005 at band practice, amps drop on ground (had it leaning up against the wall) and it dies, no fancy lights, no sound, nothing. Because it's warrenty had expired I opened it up, found a lil black thingy next to the power chord and disconnected, I re-soldered it and it was all fine, until it went again, same type of thingy, same PC board, different thingy, soldered that, all go again. That was just last week, if it happeneds again I won't be surprised.

The soldering inside the amp could be better, This amp took 6 years of abuse, and took it well. If I had a new or semi-new one, I'd gig without back up(and have) but I wouldn't with whats happened to it now, I have a feeling it's had all it can take and I'm just keeping it on life support by re-soldering stuff inside.

I've replaced the amp now, so for the problems in the begining with the spider series, and at the end, I gave it a 7, it gave me many years of reliable service, and it took lots of abuse.

Customer Support : 10
I only ever dealt with the company I bought it from, long and McQuade, but they were helpfull and covered my original problems, and many MANY other problems all under warrenty.

After it broke again this year I didn't even bother with going to the company. But I gave customer support 10 because L&M was(as is) awsome

Overall Rating : 7
I've been playing 7 years now, and played this thing for 6 of those years, I played with it in a few bands with a few gigs, on stage it lacks presence, but it can cut it when needed.
Since it broke down I decided to upgrade, I went with a mesa dual rectifer, I went with an amp I wont need to replace every 5-6 years. If it were stolen I'd cut my loss. As of now it's a backup to my mesa, I might sell it for a few hundred if someone doesnt mind it's small history of defects.
One thing I love about this amp is the programable presets, I only need 3 sounds for the music I play, Clean, Overdrivin, and Over-gained, and in the end it meets those needs decently.
I hate the way the amp is so self-contained, Effects are uselss with it, no external slave or speaker jacks, sound wise it's pretty versitile, but when it comes down to other things it's not,
I'd like too see line 6 stick tubes in an amp like this, I'd also like too rig this thing up to a 4x12, Especially my rectifier 4x12.

Overall I give the Line 6 Spider 112 a 7, and thats being extremely critical. I can't see Metallica taking this thing into the studio, but I can see a metallica cover band taking it on stage. and in the end, that's all this amp is, a 'cover amp'

Features can be frustrating to use. You have to hold the D channel button down during startup to keep the FX functions from automatically coming on when you change amp models. It sucks the way the tone knobs work too. No line out sucks too.

Sound Quality : 7
I use a 2 year old stock Strat and a mid 90s Samick LP copy with Seymour duncan Invader and Jazz pickups. I have always liked the clean sounds of this amp, but the OD/distortion never really seemed to cut it. Not real loud for 50 watts either.
I am in the process of going through the transition from SS to tube amps and I needed to decide which amp to get rid of (I also have a '93 Bandit 112) I had decided that the Spider was going to be the first amp to go, but then.
NOW COMES THE GOOD PART
I just purchased an Ibanez TS7 Tubescreamer on Ebay for $25 (thanks to the reviews on this site). I tried it on the Bandit and wasn't impressed. I tried it on the Spider amp and couldn't believe my ears. I was totally amazed with the sounds that now came out of it.
According to which guitar I'm using and which song I'm playing, I use only the first 3 amp models, clean, twang and blues. I can now get just about any sound I want out of it. It has a lot more punch too. The chorus finally is useful for something other than clean playing.
I can get anything from Boston to AC/DC to Metallica out of it now. And with a stomp on the TS7 I go right back to clean sound.
Looks like I'll be keeping this thing for a while now.
I can't wait to compare it to the vintage tweed tube amp that's on it's way from Ebay.

Reliability : 8
I've had it for about 4 years and haven't had any problems with it. It's only left the house maybe 4 times. It's very lightweight.

Customer Support : 1
Emailed them when I first got the amp to see if they had any more info on the settings because the manual is so vague. I got no response whatsoever.

Overall Rating : 10
Been plaing anything and everything that suits my ears for 15 years.
I will keep it but, I wouldn't get another if it were stolen or lost.
I am basing this rating on using the TS7 pedal with it. If you have this amp you have got to try it with a quality pedal. You won't believe the tonal quality. And tonal quality is the thing that is lacking on the distorted amp models on this amp.

I don`t know what Line 6 did different but these first series Spider amps sound much, much better then the Spider II. I don`t know if its the different speaker or what but the newer Spiders are no where near as good in my opinion which led me to this review. I had this amp about a year and although i am completely satisfied with it i was thinking about trading it in for a Spider II. After checking them out in local music stores i was shocked to find out they don`t sound as good as the first ones!!! Which brings to mind that saying....leave well enough alone! Line 6 should have done that so thats exactly what i did!! I`m not getting rid of this great little amp!!!

NOW ON TO THE FUN PART. I USE THIS AMP STRICTLY FOR HOME PRACTICE.
CLEAN: SEEMS FULL , EMG 89s WITH COIL TAP ON MY LES PAUL MAKE FOR LOTS OF TONAL VARIATIONS. GREAT FOR A CREED TYPE CLEAN / CHORUS SOUND.
TWANG: GREAT FOR "COUNTRY" TYPE LICKS. TOO BAD I DONT KNOW ANY.

BLUES: SOUNDS OK FOR ON THE EDGE BREAKUP.

CRUNCH: SOUNDS REAL BOXY COMPARED TO THE OTHER OVERDRIVE SOUNDS.STILL HAVEN'T DIALED THIS ONE IN THOUGH.

RECTO: GOOD FOR THAT RECTO TYPE OF SOUND. LESS DISTORTION THAN THE REAL THING THOUGH. FOUND IT BEST TO TAME THE LOWS AND HIGHS AND GIVE IT SOME MIDRANGE. IT'S A LITTLE MORE REALISTIC THIS WAY. MORE OF A MODERN SOUND.

INSANE:THE MAIN REASON I BOUGHT THIS AMP. IT TOTALY NAILS THE STRYPER SOUND. GREAT FOR SHREDDING. EVEN IF YOU DO LOSE DEFINITION.NOISE GATE WON'T WORK AT HIGH GAIN SETTINGS AND THIS CHANNEL IS NOISY WHEN YOU STOP PLAYING. BUT IT'S ONLY FOR PRACTICE AND WHO STOPS ENOUGH TO HEAR THE NOISE ANYWAY.

EFFECTS ARE EASY ENOUGH TO USE AND SOUND FINE FOR WHAT THEY ARE.

Reliability : No Opinion
BOUGHT IT USED, HAD IT FOR A FEW DAYS.. NO PROBLEMS YET.

Customer Support : No Opinion
HOPEFULLY NEVER NEED IT.

Overall Rating : 9
IF THIS AMP IS USED ONLY FOR HOME PRACTICE, IT IS A GREAT DEAL.DECENT CLEAN AND HEAVY DISTORTION SOUNDS. PEOPLE HAVE SAID THAT THE SOUND GETS SHRILL ETC... WHEN YOU TURN IT UP. WELL YEAH. THIS AMP WASN'T MADE FOR PLAYING STADIUMS. ALSO IT DOESN'T HAVE THE FEEL AND "PUSH" OF A REAL TUBE AMP. BUT IT ISN'T MEANT TO EITHER.I OWN TONS OF AMPS: MESA, MARSHALL, PEAVEY, REXX, ADA, METALTRONIX, PERFECT CONNECTION, SOLDANO, AND SEVERAL AMP MODELERS.THIS WONT REPLACE ANY OF THEM. BUT FOR HOME PRACTICE IT WORKS GREAT FOR ME.

It's a digitally programmed 50W amp, made in 2000. 6 programmed channels (Clean, Twang, Blues, Crunch, Recto, Insane) & 4 memory presets (which can be expended up to 12 with an optional floorboard, I own one as well) with usual EQ (channel volume, bass, mid, treble, gain). It's also got 3 modulation effects (flanger, chorus, tremelo) and 3 delay mods (delay, tape echo, ping pong), reverb and master output conrols.
Headphone jack is great for practice. It's a so called "AER-output", so you can also plug it right into the mixing console in the studio and record. (I still prefer mic-ing, 'cause you can benefit from the acoustic feaures of the room, and it sounds more dynamic.) No effect loops (pity). The amp is loud enough for me (one 12" speaker): I use it mostly for practice, jams, small club gigs and occasional recording. It's also lightweight (15kg) and quite compact, which is very important for me as I don't have a car.

I use the Spider with a Standard American Strat. I needed a versatile amp which can handle different musical styles (pop, country, blues, fusion, psycodelic, rock and occasional metal) and still be quite simple in tweakin' in the right sound. Well, this one handles it all ! I have changed all the presets using the original ones as basis and I'm quite happy with the result. Mostly I stick with the "Crunch"-mode with volume and tone pots rolled a bit down on guitar, so you get fairly juicy, slightly dark clean sound. For a good blues/rock lead I simply dial in more volume and kick in a VoodooLab Sparkle Drive. To make things more dramatic, I switch on to the "Recto"-setting which is also very good. "Clean" is good for Hank Marvin' kind of thing (together with tape echo en reverb); "Twang" goes well with some Gretsch-y tremelo action for a rockabilly sound. "Blues" is a bit one dimensional and dull, and "Insane" is way too noisy (though brutal enough to kick that metal ass, that for sure !).

Modulation effects are not high quality, but easily tweakable to get the right sound. Same goes for delays, though I really love tape echo and ping pong. Reverb is OK, but if you want better, you'd better look for an outboard unit.
The amp reacts good at volume and wah-pedals on the floorboard, though there is still some delay time (floorboard is directly connected to the amp). So if you need a really tight funky wah, you'd better use an external wah with guitar plugged right into it.

Overall sound is tight, bang-for-your-buck and quite convincing.

Reliability : 8
Due to the digital technology, this one doesn't react to any temperature/weather changes. You don't have to wait 'till the tubes are warm-and-glowing, with the Spider you can wail right away ! It's perfect for small stages as it doens't occupy much room, and, again, it's lightweight ! The only thing that's been annoying me for the last 4 months, is that volume pedal doesn't seem to cut ALL the sound in down-heel position, while the amp is in a 10-gain setting... As for the rest, it's a nice sturdy combo.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I'm gonna call the dealer to ask them if they could do anything about that volume pedal-thing. No comments so far.

I've been playing electric guitar for almost 7 years. Right now I'm looking for a second hand Mesa Boogie (Mark II or DC-5) for a REALLY good tube sound, but I might still choose for a Line6 Flextone III because of it's great diversity. I love Line6 stuff, also because of it's reliability and convincing sounds, and it's all for a very reasonable price. The Spider is great for small gigs, jams and rehearsals, and it can handle much more than only nu-metal or punk, especially if you got a versatile guitar (or several ones). You do hear the difference if you plug another axe into it, so it's quite transparant at that point. I'd choose now for a more up-market amp due to my needs (I went from amateur to semi-professional), but in it's own class Spider still beats all the rivals !

I think the features are really good for an amp like this bar one!!!! no line in, this was very annoying to me.
i too bougt the amp second hand and with being an owner of a marshall gr50 before that, i was impressed with the sound of the spider.

Sound Quality : 8
i'm playing a 1987 epihphone spotlight with Dimarzio Evolution pickups fitted and the sound on the insane setting is amazing but the only problem is that you have to set it then stick to it, you cant just change from insane to clean with out having to fart about with the other settings to get the desired effect.

Reliability : 5
i am rather annoyed with this amp now because of a dodgy channel vol knob making the sound rather dry at times then fine other times.
and that other thing is that when you change a setting there is a slight delay b4 the change takes place which is really annoying.
also the effects are rather tame especially the delay effect.
cant say i could depend on it for a gig cause its never the same twice over which is a shame cause it could be so much better.

Customer Support : 6
dont know about customer sopprt but the site is very helpful with an active forum for ppl with the same problems.

well overall the amp is the best i've had but only good in my eyes for practising in the home.
too many faults compared to other plug and play amps. not sure how accurate my statments are because i haven't tried effects boxes or the like through it, but my experience so far with the on board stuff has been a little less than dissapointing. bearing in mind the only effects module i've ever had was a korg pandora px2.

Got mine second hand. But very good nick. Features already explained. But amazing. I have not seen another amp that is non-line 6 with these features.

Sound Quality : 7
I use a Les Paul standard and the DM4 and the MM4 line 6 stompboxes.
I like insane, i know many dont, but a few changes, a bit of chorous, and the sound is inspiring for me to write some music. At the top volume, the sound does suffer a bit. I always keep it on clean, to utilise the stompboxes to their full capacity. All the channels are useful, foe variety purposes, and a change of sound often goes a long way to writing new stuff.

Reliability : 8
This amp has been perfect, and i got it second hand. I am one careful owner, and so was the previous owner. The other guitarist in my band had one of the 212, and i bought mine without knowing what it was(yeh i know silly, but it all worked out) The two together in practices can make some pretty amazing music, one in twang, and the other in crunch or recto, for quite a slow rock song, can bring a tear to the eye.
This amp, is kept in my bedroom when practicing on my own, and i often use it to reach high shelves for example. It is sturdy as a brick shithouse.
The dials are rock solid, they aint going anywhere.

Customer Support : 9
None needed, but I can only use it for the stopmboxes. But they are probably very helpful

Overall Rating : 9
I have been playing for 2 and a half years. I use it with an Epiphone Les Paul Standard. Awsome. A bit of a Line 6 fan, with the distortion and Modulation stompboxes. I have learned so much by myself with this gear. If the amp were stolen, i would probably buy a mark 2 head, and another a mode four or something to get a diverse setup. And a few cabs to get a beautiful noise.

2001 Great practice amp or small gig amp, four programmable channels, six amplifier model simulations and six different effects plus reverb.

Sound Quality : 6
Use with a les paul deluxe and a Ibanez 540. This amp has average clean sounds and very good dirty sounds, the recto simulation is really nice and contrary to other reviews the insane is useable if you tweek it. It was desinged to have to much gain you just have to back it off and you get some nice heavy distortion. The real minus is the speaker, like most budget combos it's lightweight and weak when you really push it. If you get a chance do what I did and replace it with a real speaker! I had a celestion g12h-80 left over from a project and the difference is amazing, it takes it from good sounding to great, now I can push it and thump it all day with no problem. I'd rate the sound a 6 with the stock speaker and a 9 with the celestion the clean could still be better.

Seems solid no problems so far.

Overall as a practice amp which is what I bought it for it is as good as it gets, but really if I didn't have my larger amps I think it would be very gigworthy in smaller clubs or miked for bigger and also great for band practice.

Not sure when it was made, I like the amp for its sound. It has a good distorted sound, I'm not too happy with the blues setting since I do enjoy playing blues. It has 4 channels, which could be better if it had more, headphone jack which I haven't tried yet. I use it in the basement while my band is practicing, we haven't gigged since I got it, but we will probably have one, at which point I will give another review saying how it did there. I don't use the Trem or Flange, the tape echo also sounds bad. I use Chourus occasionally, and almost always play with delay. The Ping Pong effect has a nice sound to it.

Sound Quality : 8
I am using a Charvel with a Seymor Duncan Humbucker in it(Not sure of brand). It is very good for what I play, which is new rock and classic (Zeppelin, Nirvana, BLink, ect.) Huge mix of everythign is what I play. It can be noisy, I haven't gigged with it as of yet, but it sounds great in my basement about 1/4 of the way up. I play it on Recto and Insane.

I have not had problems with the amp as of yet, but I always take care of all my equiptment.

I have been playing for about a year and a half now. I own 2 guitars, and another shit amp. If it were stolen, I would probably get something else, I like it, but I probably wouldnt get another one cause the new models are too expensive since I could pay 500 for a new one, or get a used Tube Amp for less. I wish it had a bit better of a distortion sound other than Insane and Recto (although Recto sounds great)

Amp was purchased in 2001/new. Had the amp 3 year+.
Play mainly country/rock, rock, blues and some fusion/jazz. Like many styles.
4 programable channels; switching is manual without pedal (pedal is overpriced); no effects loop that I've seen (only pedal I use is a DOD distortion or overdrive directly into guitar); there is a headphone jack (never use it).
Needs a "presence" response (I believe the new spiders have these--or was it the flextone model, hum, can't remember). I'm constanlty attempting to get a better treble/midrange response from this thing, but never quite satisfied. Always turn the bass down to zero because otherwise, the bass is overwhelming (thought I recall this being a problem with some of the older models--something to do with component fine tuning; not an electrical engineer, so don't know the science).
Power rating seems OK for me--I play in mostly smaller venues (small clubs, coffeehouses and outdoor farmers' markets)---also perform a lot of acoustic music.
Flange is weak; tremelo seems fine; chorus is OK in moderation; delay seems OK; don't like the sound of the tape echo, so never use it; ping pong echo is actually my favorite--nice "spacey" quality to it.

Sound Quality : 4
Use a fender tele and cheap squire strat, stock pick-ups and some mods at other times I switch out pups every so often just for a change).
Again, play a variety of styles, from blues to a more country-like twang. Haven't found a distortionI like from the amp, hence the distortion pedal. It's never gonna give a pleasant tube-like overdrive/dsitortion; didn't really think it would from the start.
I only use the clean channel (w/ pedal occassionally)--not to much impressed with the twang, blues (this one's particularly muddy--pretty miserable); and the retro/insane settings don't fit my style or tone preference. The clean setting seems adequate, particularly with a standard tele I recently purchased (I believe the guitar also has excellent tone, so that definately helps). I'll give it a "7" for the clean channel--"4" overall.

Reliability : 3
Here's where I'm sorely disappointed: last week the PC board scorched on me. Just had an outdoor gig--used the amp for about an hour only; got it home, plugged in and swoosh--waft of smoke and that disagreeable smell that goes with it,; something electrical burning. took it in to a shop 2 days later. Was told to purchase a new PC board, the old ones not worth fixing. $120 for the board, $30-40 labor and I've spent nearly half as much of the initial cost of the amp. The amp's been treated very well (I take pride in making things last and taking care of my equipment) and has been used only moderately over the years for practise and some giging. Very disappointed.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Haven't dealt with the company; dealt with an authorized repair shop nearby to home. Had to get it fixed, otherwise, no good to me anymore. And they won't let me keep the old board without paying an extra $40 (lotsa good parts left they can use again).

Overall Rating : 4
Been playing since 1970 (took most of the late 70s & 80s off from playing, however); own a number of acoustic guitars, PA system, and other performing gear for vocal performance, etc. If lost/stolen, would likely get something else.
Think the amp is overpriced for what it is; perhaps worth $200 max. Seems good for practise and maybe small venue gig, but the amp is very sensitive and finicky, and I'm often frustrted at having to reset settings at each performance (often don't have the time and like to concentrate on other things).
Would expect to get much longer from the product before a major break down such as this.

It's a 50 watts solid state guitar amp. You can choose between 6 amp models (Clean, Twang, Blues, Crunch, Recto, Insane) and you can save 4 presets (A, B, C, D). The controls are: Drive, Bass, Mid, Treble, Channel Volume. There are also some knobs for the effects: one for Flanger/Chorus/Tremolo, one for Delay/Tape Echo/Ping Pong (Delay and other effects lenght is controlled by a Tap button) and finally one for Reverb. Obviously there is also a Master volume. It's got a headphones output but not a real line-out. It's got a 12" Line 6 Tube Tone speaker.

Sound Quality : 8
I play mainly rock, punk, hard rock and heavy metal, but also country and poprock. I play an American Standard Stratocaster. It is difficult to give an overall opinion about this amp, so I will describe and comment the amp model it offers one by one.

CLEAN: Well, first of all, this isn't a clean channel. You can't get a real clean sound!!! It sounds unreal. The only thing that saves this amp model is that you can get quite good sounds with chorus or other effects... but don't expect to make your guitar play like an acoustic one.
I give it a 6.

TWANG: I like it more than the clean one. Obviously if you use effects...
I give it a 6,5.

BLUES: Well it isn't a bad amp model but I never use it. It doesn't sound so much different from the previous two.
I give it a 6.

CRUNCH: This amp model offers a light overdrive sound (even when cranked). I use this channel very often, but always with another overdrive pedal (Korg G3) which acts like a boost.
I give it a 8.

RECTO: Well it hasn't got all that gain that the name allows to suppose. I use this channel (always with my Korg G3) specially when I play at high volumes (rock and hard rock). It's a quite good channel, but it should have more gain and a more warm sound, in fact it sounds a little harsh (without a boost overdrive pedal).
I give it a 7,5.

INSANE: First of all, you can get conscious of this thing specially playing with this amp model, this amp sounds very good at low volumes (let's say until 10/11 o'clock on the Master knob), but when you play at high volumes you can't get a full and very warm sound, due to the fact that you loose great part of the bass frequences. So your sound become
thin. If you want to get a big sound even at high volumes you MUST buy an ALL-tube amp. In the end I must say that this amp is good for alone playing at home, but not so much if you play (like me) in a band (also because it hasn't got an high output).
Talking about this amp model, it's the one I use most often. Playing with a strat with single coils, I must set the equalizer in this way to get a big and powerful sound: Bass at 4 o'clock (near to the max), Mid at 1, Treble at 10 and Drive at 3. I usually don't use other effects, except for solos. Well, with this configuration I can get a real hard rock/heavy metal sound! It is fantastic! The distortion is full and warm. Sometimes I also play with Drive at 1 o'clock and with the overdrive boost pedal, to get an even more liquid distortion, but it isn't really necessary.
The distortion you get is really very big and very smooth. I tried an 80 watts AVT Marshall owned by one of my friends, and you can't compare the 2 kinds of distortion! I don't like Marshalls, and now I know why! Marshalls are good only for solos, but don't try to get a big and fat and specially smooth rhythm distortion from them! After having tried this Marshall I love my line 6 even more!!!
I love to spend a lot of minutes playing palm muted!!! It's fantastic!!!
I give it a 9.

In the end, if you love distorted sounds and if you play alone at home, this amp should be your fisrt choice!!!
Obviously speaking about solid-state amps... I play in 3 bands: with the first I play punk, with the second I play rock, hard rock and heavy metal and with the third I play '70s rock (Creedence and others...). My dream is to get a Mesa Boogie Mark IIc+ 100 watts head, but I would never abandone my line 6 112 spider!!!

Reliability : 10
Never had any problems. When it doesn't work it is surely a cable problem (I must repair my cables every month...).

I have a Tom Anderson classic, an old ES 335, and a big DeArmond jazz box. The mosy usable sound for me is the "crunch" which is a plexi Marshall model. It sounds really good at low to medium volumes, but when you turn it up, instead of getting "sweeter" like a tube amp, it flattens out. The blackface Fender model is decent, but at high voulmes is annoyingly bright. The recto and insane models are also very, very top end heavy. I guess if you like that over processsed nu metal sound, then they're OK.

Very reliable, no problems at all

I've been playing over 30 years, and though I haven't made any big records, from what people tell me, I'm more than pretty good, and can play anything from Blues to Rock to Fusion and even a little bop. I also have owned some really high end stuff like VHT, Bogner, Mesa, and Marshall, as well as having played through just about anything you can name. I bought this to just have an amp to take to jams as I'm involved in a career that doesn't allow me the time to do a band thing right now. For the money this is a decent amp, but I just bought a Reverend Hellhound, and the sound of real tubes is just another world all together.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm......... where to start eh?? I use and Epi Les Paul Standard and a Squier Fat Strat...out of all the amp models and I can honestly say in my oppinion that Recto is the only one I was half pleased with... I found all the other setttings, from the muffled clean to the absolutely horrifying insane setting absolutely useless... the sheer awfullness of the blues and the cruch setting have to be heard to be believed... I played around with the equaliser for hours an end trying and even begging to get a decent sound out this thing but I just kept failing... perhaps if you are into metal and nothing else then this amp maybe slightly useful but if you are not, stay clear of this abomination... sure you can get a massive range of sounds out of this thing but are any of them actually good??? GOD NO!!!
My advice is to buy the Roland Cube 30 amp.... much better sound, much better amp models, much better digital effects, and all for a good #75 cheaper..

Never really had a problem with it breaking down

I've had this for 6 months and can't wait to get rid of the bugger... This amp has a lot of lights on it, it may attract small children, perhaps that's why i bought it about 4 years ago before i knew how to play anything but a power chord...... it also has a headphone jack, it sounded pretty good on headphones, i think my dad liked that feature...... but hmmm features, ya it has a lot of them.... probably too much, this is one who tries to excel at all things, but succeeds at none of them........

Sound Quality : 1
I started off with a pretty crappy guitar i suppose, a Squire Stagemaster, and about 8 months ago purchased a Hwy 1 Fender Stratocaster (this is mostly american now that i've changed the electronics) with EMG SA's GXP and SPC (something like that). I play a lot of stuff, still a copy-cat but i play SRV, Van Halen, Pantera, (a few of the long list) a lot of different kind of stuff.... let's just say first off if you want to play ANY sort of blues..... DO NOT BUY THIS AMP.... the blues setting is horrible, and the best i could get was on the clean setting, but you try to play little wing on this thing.... it sounded better out of my acoustic, than through my dad's '76 strat and this thing, The insane setting is.... insanely crappy, first of all if you want to play it you have to drop the bass to 0, and then even then you will get not one ounce of clarity, makes Eruption solo sounds like 1 long note....... I realize you have to tweak this amp to get anything decent at all, but after 4 years, i'm giving up..... i just can't get anything good, i bought a few rack effects a Digitech Twintube GFX-1, Alesis Midiverb 3 and within 5 minutes i was getting sounds that blew this thing out of the water, i'm not saying the digitech is great, I still haven't decided that yet. if you are thinking about this amp, don't Go buy a 15 watt crap-amp and a Metal-zone pedal if you want the distortion, at least you will prob want to keep the metal zone pedal and won't havea 300 dollar boat anchor in your bedroom. or better yet spend another 50 bucks and get a 40 watt marshall or fender tube combo used.....i just got a fender blues deluxe for about 350 and i paid almost 400 for this amp new....... makes me sick since i can't get more than 200 on ebay for it, maybe i shouldn't be writing this review..... oh well screw it, if you are smart enough to research i don't want you to be stuck with this piece of crap

Reliability : 7
Yeah, it's dependable........ never broken....... umm the line 6 sticker fell off the front and i can't find it...... i don't think that constitutes being unreliable.... and i don't gig..... so i guess if i did gig.....i would never use this amp...... so N/A

(p.s.) to you who have not filled one of these out, it has some qeustions, that's why all the answers have someithing about gigging in them.

Oh yeah it's never broken down, but neither has my

I don't remember the warranty length, i'm guessing a year, i don't care anymore.... so this category is totally N/A

I got a few various effects, a Tech 21 Sansamp, Digitech Twintube, Alesis midiverb, and a Korg multi-effects (pretty much a tuner and volume pedal now) I like the midi controlled effects, it allows me to get a lot more presets, and they sound a lot better..... about to get in my new fender amp, a tubescreamer.

If this was stolen i would be pissed casue i couldn't sell it to someone on ebay.... but would not miss it's crappy tones one bit.

if you do buy this thing, either you don't know what guitar tone is, or for some reason don't care, i know people say that a good guitar player can sound good with any guitar...... yeah i'm not saying my playing sounds like shit on this, people like to listen to this amp when i play, but it doesn't let me acheive my potential, the mushy tone and far to bassy sound totally make me sound a lot worse than i do when i play on a fender hotrod, especially when i'm playing clean stuff....... i been thinking about what makes this thing crappy and i think i figured it out..... you ever had one of those little synthesizers?(sp) and put it on a grand piano patch? yeah you can play and it sounds like you are playing to a piano, and if you play good people are like wow you are good....... but if you get in front of a very nice grand piano and play something beautiful, you are gonna hit a nerve in people......

Say what you want, tubes feel like i'm playing something real

The ear candy is pretty good. At high gigging volumes it starts to fall down as the dynamic range isn't there when set up next to some big valve amps but if you're the only guitar you can control the volume on stage and this amp is sonically as good as valves when you have some headroom. It also has the small benefit of being massively more tonally flexible! Unless you only use two sounds or you've got room for ten different valve rigs this is a great way to go, period. At present Line 6 are selling these for #200 including the FB4, that is one seriously good set of sound for the cash. I use washburn idol, westone 335 copy and a Jap strat and they all sound great. When I compare this to how hard it used to be to sound good when I was as regular gigging guitarist in the 80s and 90s all I can say is you simply have never had it so good. THis is the dogs bollock (UK for very good) as a recording amp, versatile yet very easy to get great sounds.

Reliability : 10
Total reliability. I've had mine for 3 yrs, done several gigs and had my kids climb all over the thing and still its faultless. Some say valve sound better, I really can't tell the difference when my amp is in the zone, but this does n't blow up or need revalving every five minutes, you also don't burn your hands on the front panel (Marshall) need a noisy cooling fan like everything else with valves. I've never needed a back up although my vintage amp obsessed friends always need theirs, oh and the effects are totally reliable so I get the "can you play the chorused jangly bit 'cause my peadle boards gone down".

Customer Support : 9
Line 6 have a great web site and constantly pass on their high end experience down to this end of the market.

Overall Rating : 9
9 - This amp can take you a very long way, they're now so cheap you can start with one and you may well still be gigging with it as a semi-pro. It covers nearly every tonal/timbral taste from clean to blue to knarly saturated rock, its musical too, turn the volume down on your axe and the tone changes, heay! just like valves. Try one, use it with some taste and you'll sound damn good. Then later when you settle on your own few sounds you can buy a boutique rig just for you, I bet you'll keep this as a spare though.

OK, for a beginner id say this is ok, you get an array of sounds, built in effects, and it costs next to nothing.

If you have been playing for more than a day though, This amp sounds synthetic, lifeless and irritatingly shrill. You cant turn the shrill sound off. Insane mode is about the best but it sounds so arfiticial, and again the shrill sound ruins it. It will make you insanely pissed off.
At full volume this amp loses all of its definition and clarity and sounds like a wet fart. Under ALL settings. Very shrill and weak to the point of pain. Never use this amp in loud circumstances ever. It WASNT designed for volume. it vanishes in a band situation, quicker than you can say "bin laden".

Its about at its best when directly injected into a mixing desk. It still retains is toneless lifeless shittyness.
If you want to feel your playing and you want others to feel it, dont buy this box of dog shit. It sucks life out of the guitar and should be banned along with the rest of line6 and their robofaggot crap.
Remember, your guitar goes through their code, they shape it. you dont.

They have a very insidious marketing campaign paying the slipknot idiots etc.. It is commercial lies. Dont be fooled into thinking this amplifier or manufacturer has any credibility.

Reliability : 2
The channel switching is crap. It randomly switches after about 2 hours use. The speaker packed in when the software decided to assume i was always directly injecting. line out works. speaker dosent.

Customer Support : 1
Line 6 are shit, poor to deal with and seeing as they have discontinuted this model, completely ignorant. They wont respond to email. These bastards are only in it for the money. Unless you own their latest product they ignore you, or rather try to force you to buy their latest monstrosity because "person x" who plays for "commercial devils cock sucker band y" gets payed thousands to claim to use it. Lifeless, soul-sapping, false scum.

Overall Rating : 1
If someone stole this, id find out where they lived and thank them. Ive moved on from this amp and would NEVER buy from line6 again.
Do youself a favour, save up for a real tube amplifier, you wont be dissapointed. Dont waste your $200 on a short term shithouse.

This amp is great. Its a definite improvement from my old 20W Stagg amp that I got with my first guitar hehe... It has amp modelling built in and a few FX thrown in for fun too... I am currently tryin to sell my GFX-707II Multi FX pedal, but I fear I will not need a new one with the sound that comes out of this thing.... Well, I would need a footswitch for around #80 :(

Sound Quality : 8
I can get all the tones I need out of the amp - the only problem I have is 4 presets :( I need more. However, you can get from the very clean, to country twang, to punk to heavy metal - its all there.. from one end of the "tonal spectrum" (hehe i made that up) to the other...

The only problem I do have is the noise of the really high pitched notes.. I might not have it set up right yet (only tried it a few times so far) but really high notes hurt your ears...

Reliability : 10
I laugh at the 1 review where someone is upset because his roommates circuit board was fried. Look at all the other reviews and take no notice, this thing is build like a tank. That one review must have been something like spilling some beer into it and then tryin it out.. Its not like the circuit board just breaks on you - im glad it was out of warrenty... TAKE CARE OF YOUR BABY!!!

Customer Support : No Opinion
No chance, this thing will never break...

Overall Rating : 10
I use this thing with my Vintage Raider (H/S/H) and my Stagg Strat Copy.. OK not the best guitars in the world hehe, but it sounds awesom. I also tried my friends Fender USA Strat through it - doesnt sound any better hehe.. well until he plays it ;)

Overall, its great for the money. If you see it used, buy it (cos it wont break) unless ure picky about the couple of scratches that may be on it. I got mine for #135 used, immaculate condition and im glad I did...

Same features as all the other reviews. I bought it for when I want to travel light, i.e. for when I know one of the band members isn't turning up to a rehearsal so I don't have to lug my main amp in and out of the car.

The effects are very limited in turns of tweakabilty, but they are good generic sounds as long as they are used with discretion.

The only complaint is that Line 6 make it so you have to buy a footswitch or floorboard in addition in order to get best use out of it, adding at least #70 to the price. Luckilly I have the floorboard already for use with my Flextone II XL. If they just put a standard non-latching footswitch plug on so that you could scroll through the four channels it would be an improvement.

Sound Quality : 8
I use it with a Fender Texas Special Fat Strat for general pub rock music.

Now, I get fed up with hearing folk who are obviously crap with technology whining on about how anything with valves in has to sound better. This is a pathetic mantra that's been circulating the music industry for decades and saves ignorant people from actually having to think about their own sound. I've heard people with the cheapest guitar in the word and an old tranny amp making music to die for, and equally I've heard peole with a wildly expensive guitar and valve amp set-up sounding awful. So let's clear the decks of all the pre-conceptions before we go any further shall we?

Now, having said that, this amp is not a perfet emulation of six classic valve amps, but it IS a very, very good compromise, and sounds and responds far better than all of the competition, such as Vox Valvetronix, Marshall VST, Peavey Transtube, etc. The message for everyone who complains that it doesn't sound the same at high volume as it does at low volume is to type EQUAL LOUDNESS CONTOURS into a search engine and get clued up. The problem with this sort of technology is that it takes time to tweak it , so we all want to fiddle with it at home, then take it to the gig or and rehearsal the just crank up the master and it'll sound great, right? WRONG! The ear responds to frequency differently at different sound presure levels, so your EQ needs to be set appropriately for the level you're playing at. (and this goes for ANY amp. The difference with this is that with a dozen channels to set up we're all less inclined to do the job properly when the rest of the band are there.)

I use a Line 6 Flextone II XL as my main amp, and it sounds brilliant: far better than the other guitarist's rig with his digital floorboard, and this amp is capable of producing similar sounds, albeit with a bit of compromise. Once again, no, it does not sound precisely like whatever classic valve amp it's named after, but it does such a good impression of it that once embedded in the mix there's no way you or anybody else is going to tell the difference. How many punters at a gig are listening solely to the guitarist's tone, eh? Only the rather anally-retentive other guitarists in the audience. Hey, here's an idea. How about we all get out there and make music instead of getting up our own arses about our TONE eh? The vibe comes out of your fingers and from the band's groove, not from the gear you buy.

So stop wanting something for nothing guys, and at least be willing to put in a bit of time learning to use it and settting it up at appropriate volumes. I swear most of these complaints are just regurgitation of things guys have read in music mags, written by guitar journos who are too far up their own arses anyway.

The Clean sound is very good, but I prefer the Twang sound for clean work. The Blues setting is the least useful setting for me, but the Crunch, Recto and Insane settings are all really good. Pretty dynamic and responding well to attack, etc.

A word of caution here. The guys at Line 6 have deliberately given the last three setings far more gain than any sane person could ever use, so go easy on the drive for a better sound. If you drive it too hard it will compress the crap out of your signal and rob your sound of any individuality.

Reliability : 10
The amp's very new but no problems at all so far.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never Contacted them.

I've been playing over 20 years and I also use a Flextone II XL, which I'm very happy with. Guitar-wise I use a Fender Texas Special Fat Strat as my main guitar, with a Washburn WG 580 (Super strat to you) as a spare. I also use a Yamaha APX5 acoustic with a Zoom 504II Multi-FX unit.

Overally this amp is great for what I want it for. It sounds great, but no, it doesn't sound exactly like a valve amp, and like all non-valve amps it will be quieter than a valve amp with the same power rating.

If you need Marshall stack, then buy a Marshall stack. If you want a highly versatile, highly portable unit with more flexibilty and features than you will find on anything in it's price-range then consider one of these.

Heck of a lot of features compared to a regular old 2-channel tube or solid state amp with reverb. Needs a speaker out. I've got the smaller foot controller and it works well. I like being able to adjust my tone and quickly save it to memory. 8 presets instead of 4 would have been much better of course. You do get a lot of features in one box though. I bought it for band rehearsals so I wouldn't have to lug my half stack around.

Sound Quality : 5
I bought this primarily to play Drop-D, one-finger chord Metal, and for soloing. The overall sound of the amp is powerful, thick, flat, unresponsive, and shrill. It sounds great at first, but the highs are irritating after a while, and cause ear fatigue. You can turn every tone control off and still hear the shrill frequencies.

The best model is the Recto, which is what I bought it for. I use 2 settings: Recto for rhythm, and Recto for solos with a volume and mid boost. The clean are ok, but like all the models on these amps they color and even mask the tone of the guitar. It simply doesn't let the wood of the guitar breathe. There are no adequate models for a good Blues tone; that JTM/Plexi stuff is crappola, so you can just throw those two out. It would have been better to just make a JCM800 sound instead. Why they didn't, I'll never know. The Insane model is, well, insane.

It gets decent Recto for band rehearsals, and at $300. I can just leave it there without worrying about it getting smacked up.

The effects are ordinary. The chorus and flange are total ass, the reverb is passable, and the delay is ok. I've certainly heard much better sounding choruses in mono.

It's quiet with the noise gate active. It has no feel, no life.

Reliability : No Opinion
Seems reliable, except for the RJ-45 computer network cable and jacks for the footswitch. Why doesn't everyone simply standardise this kind of crap and just use MIDI cables and connectors?

Customer Support : No Opinion

Overall Rating : 6
You'll get a nice punchy Recto tone. That and the two cleannels are the only models I found reasonably useful. The amp sounds like what a beginner would learn on before getting a real amp (something that sounds and feels better). This ain't Pro tools by far. It lacks dynamics and feel. However, beginners get to hear a number of tones that may help them choose their style a lot easier than if they'd just gotten a Peavey Rage amp to practice on.

I've been playing for 25 years and own a number of Marshalls, Fenders, and Gibsons. I like this amp a bit. It's fun to kick around, but this modelling stuff still has a looong way to go before it's the end-all be-all of guitar tone that it aspires to be. In the case of the Spider 1x12, it's a good deal for $300. currently.

Does Metal or Jazzy cleans ok. Doesn't do Blues very well.

Lots for the price. Four channels sounds good doesn't it? 6 Amp models? So does lots of footswitchable effects? With separate reverb? I would honestly love to be able to sing this amp's praises... it's so hard to find a truly awful piece of equipment out there today. Maybe I became complacent and spoiled, but I think I found one at last...

Sound Quality : 2
I bought this exclusively to use a small amp for home use and small gigs - I also use a Tech21 Trademark 60 with a coupla external overdrive pedals (TS9 and Boss DF-2), and a 2002 Roland Cube 30. I wanted the "package in a box" with a bit more volume than the Roland, and less cables to lug about than the Tech 21 rig. I play an Ibanez SZ-520, Yamaha Pacifica 904, and a Gordon Smith Graf.

Now, there is no subtle way to say this... each of my guitars has character in abundance through the Roland or Tech 21, but this *thing* kills them dead. It has the least character, feel, and expressiveness since I had a 12Watt "Badger" combo when I was about 14. My seven year old is learning to play with a Samick LP half-scale copy, and though initially wowed by all the knobs and lights, he went straight back to Mr. Roland. At any setting, any level, the thing is truly horrible. The speaker has the frequency response of a pair of stockings, the power stage is woefully underpowered, the reverb truly *HORRIBLE*, and the amp "models" about as appealing as chhosing which piece of roadkill you want to scrape up for your dinner. OK, it was #125 off eBay, new, boxed and unused... it's going straight back there, pronto! You *can* get some nice sustained feedback off the "Recto" model, but thats the only point at which I thought "hey, that's one good point, maybe I can find some more...". I couldn't. And I'm being generous giving it the rating I have... it gets a 2 bacause it works and makes a noise.

Reliability : No Opinion
I have no intention of being seen in public with this thing, even if they sponsored me, so I'll never know.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I'm thinking of mailing them to mock the descriptions of the amp models in the manual.

Overall Rating : 2
Probably my bad - this thing would probably be adored and revered equally by someone starting out and on a tight budget But for a minimum selling price of #199 new in the UK, it doesn't come anywhere near close to the Roland Cube 30 #179 here) in terms of sound quality and the inspiration that can produce.

I've owned Boogie, Marshall, Peavy... "Badger"(!)... oh hell, just about everything and have settled on my main Tech 21 rig cos it sounds superb, just needs a bit more gain and oomph at times. Those amps show what you can do with modelling... this thing offers a lot, promises everything, and delivers nothing. But it's fun for the younger/novice player at a good price to suit - unfortunately, my rating is based on more than that - it works and makes a noise.

In general, one must consider exactly what this amp is before approaching it with assumptions on what it should be. It's not a "solid state" amp for one. Just because it doesn't have tubes doesn't mean it's a solid state. It's a digital modeler, a newer technology that vastly outweighs solid state technology. For $300 you cannot match it.

Sound Quality : 8
The clean tone is very good. With a some fine tuning you can get a very good distortion that I've tried to match with the 8 or so BOSS pedals I own (running through a Fender Deville 4x10 cabinet...yes a tube amp! wow!) but I just can't seem to recreate my Line 6 sound on this so called better amp. The Line 6 has it's own sound that is very interesting especially in a recording situation. So as far as coming up with your "identidy" sound...it's somewhat true. If you fiddle with it long enough, you will come up with something interesting. I've been playing in various bands for years, using lots of different equipment...I now use this little amp almost extensively in rehearsal so I don't have to lug my monster 4x10 (70 plus lbs.!)...which at first was hard for me to understand, because how could this amp compare with a tube amp I kept asking myself??? It's a question of economy people. Do you want to lug all that shit and weight that's associated with a tube amp??? Unless you have roadies the answer should be no. So unless your up your own ass and constantly whine about tone...which by the way, for all you people out there who do, for gods sake, everyone knows that you can't perfectly match a tube amp...and yes tube amps sound great...but it's almost as good so what the hell? And, it's only going to get better. The new Vetta technology is fantastic...great for direct recording, etc... So if all your into is tube stuff then you shouldn't even be writing on this site...if you like having great tone that's not 100% tube but very close plus a library of other possibilities than this is a good starting place. Like I said, it's powerful enough to rehearse with...so go for it.

Reliability : 8
So far so good...have had it 3 years.

one by one here...
---i don't know when it was made, but it's all digital, so it doesn't matter much
---it's quite versatile for me, but i only really use one of the models on it anyways, it's the effects that make my 4 preset channels any different from each other
---it's got 4 channels you can save yourself (6 if you have the good floorboard). and a headphone jack which sounds like ass, even with expensive headphones
---i HATE the smart control effects, because i don't want the delay volume/feedback to be on one knob and all that...

features-wise, it does pretty well... 6 amp models, chorus, flange, tremolo, 3 delays, and a decent reverb (and all that is before the hidden features).

Sound Quality : 8
right now, i've got an Epiphone G-400 with 2 Duncan Distortions in it, and w/Gibson electronics (after the mods, a nice little instrument).

the "clean" model isn't half bad at all. is really best for your stompboxes to be used with this channel. doesn't break up unless you want it to, nice and clear, not too shabby.

the "blues" model is mediocre, i think. i stopped using it a long time ago.

the "twang" model is pretty fine, in my opinion. it's supposed to model an old Fender (can't remember which one), and it's not bad. it' doesn't have the tube-sizzle you can get when you really push it, and it doesn't quite have the same sparkle, but it retains that high-class chimey Fender sound to it. sounds great with a decent outboard OD and some slight echo...

the "crunch" setting is supposed to be a Marshall SuperLead, and i find that very disturbing. if this is what a Plexi sounds like, i dont' know how the hell all these legends got to where they are today by using them. again, i don't really use it, because i dont' like it.

the "recto" setting is BY FAR the one i use the most. it cleans up nicely when i roll back my guitar's volume, and i can get a nice, defined, clean sound this way. with the gain halfway up (which is as high as i ever put it) i can pick lightly and get a cleaner sound, or pick more aggressively and have the thing distort and send some damn fine crunch my way. isn't quite the Mesa it wants to be, but it isn't very far off either.

the "insane" setting is another one i barely use. high-gain is all well and good by me, but not like this. if it could clean up, or if there was any note definition, i might use it, but that's not the case, so it stays dormant.

all in all, the thing sounds pretty good, if you take the time to mess with it a little. can't sit down in front of this and have it immediately sound like gold, you've gotta put some time into it. play with the EQ, explore the hidden settings, program your 4 channels, and then let me know. this isn't really a good or bad thing, people say that alot about the Mesa Mark series as well, and those things are freakin incredible.

Reliability : 10
hasn't broken down on me in any way, and i've had it about 2 years. not bad.

Customer Support : No Opinion
again, amp hasn't broken down, haven't really needed support.

although i did download the manual on their website after mine disappeared. but i can't really rate their service for that, since most companies that sell ANYTHING digital will do this for you.

Overall Rating : 6
like i said, it's versatile, and it sounds good, but there's one problem with it, and it's a pretty big one. i found this to be true with most Line 6 products, the sounds will be pretty good (if not great), and all that, but they have NO FEEL!!! sat down in front of a Vetta the other day, and got a really awesome setup running with a "jumped" Plexi and an Engl Powerball, it totally kicked my ass sound-wise. but a few minutes later i went and played a Marshall DSL50, and although i didn't like the sound quite as much, the feel was soooo much better that i would've bought the Marshall long before i bought the Vetta.

since i believe that your real sound is contained mostly in your hands (literally), and this thing doesn't give you much feel at all, i can't exactly give it a stellar review. however, if you're just starting out like i was when i bought it, it's quite fine.

i like it and everything, but i wish i had saved the money and bought something a little better. oh well, you live and learn.

I think this particular amp was constructed in '01. I don't really like "catergories" of music...But, I guess, I play Rock and Metal mostly. The Spider is pretty flexible, with it's six amp models and six "Smart Knob" effects. It could use a jack for external speaker cabinets. The 50 solid state watts are OK...But, there not near as loud as 50 tube watts. As far as features go, it's nice.

Sound Quality : 5
When I bought this amp, I had an Epiphone Wildkat semi-hollow body. I didn't like this guitar with the Spider. The effects were sort of dead, and the distortion was bland and out of control. Now I have an ESP MH-300, with EMG-HZ passive pups and a 24 fret set neck...This is a much better combination. Now, I am able to utilize the amps effects, and get some chunky distortion that has a little more character. Even still, I feel that it leaves a bit to be desired. I think the missing link, is tubes. The only amp model that I love, is the "Blues" setting. It is the most versatile with my set up. With the Drive at about 12 o'clock, you can get a haunting blues sound (this is also a good setting to mix in some effects, like "Tape Echo"). With the Drive at full throttle, you can chug some burning power chord progressions. "Recto" is pretty good too, with some time spent playing around with it. The rest of the amp setting, really haven't impressed me that much...I did one major modification to it. I put a Celestion Vintage 30 speaker in it. This was a great move. The main areas that it seems to help in are bass response, tone and volume. This amp seems 50% louder with the Vintage 30...

Reliability : 9
This amp has never failed me...It seems very stable, inside and out...It is a couple of years old, and I gig with it all the time. I even mic it up at gigs, without a backup...

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never dealt with them...

Overall Rating : 6
Overall...I would say, if Line 6 could provide this versatility and convience, with real tube overdrive...It couldn't be beat. But, the amp, as it stands, has good flexability, descent tone, and great reliability...Ideal for a young or beginning guitar player. Not so ideal for an ole' tone dog...

I would just like to say;, for #199, brand spanking new I can honestly say, there is not a better amp on the fucking market!!! I've read some of the reviews and am honestly; surprised by them. Features??? Well, you tell me
, what has multiple channels (4), which you can store in its in built memory, with effects, such as delay, chorus, reverb etc (all built-in) and yes for #199. Its simply awesome, for the price. The only reason, i'm greedy and want a compression in built as well.

Sound Quality : 8
I'm using a 97 Gibson Les Paul, which gives it such a thick sound. Its great for my style of music. I love Tool and it sounds great, when I'm attempting to mimic their sound. Its fucking beautiful clean. Really warm, which doesn't distort, when the volume gets higher. Worth buying it for this alone. The Recto and Insane, however are where its at. If you love Metallica, Tool, Pumpkins etc this is the amp for you. However if i'm being honest, trying to get a British Guitar sound, like Led Zepplin is pretty hard. Bottom line, buy this mother fucking amp for the insane and recto channels, they fucking ROCK!!!!

Reliability : 10
Too be honest, I can't really comment, as I've notr had it for too long. But with anything, if you look after it, its pretty reliable, if you treat it like shit, it'll tell you too shove it and not play.

Again, couldn't say as I've not had a problem. But if I have any issue with it, I'll contact my dealer and get them to sort it out, they're pretty good bucnh of lads.

Like I said, bottom line get this bought!!! I've had a marshall, which I miss as this doesn't give me, that sort of tone, however this has more depth than any Canyon, I can think of. I haven't been gigging with it, so I'm interested in, how it deals with that. But at the moment, my next amp will be another one of these.

This amp has a lot of really cool features that you'd probably have to pay upwards of $60 to get in some pedal or another. i.e. good delay, chorus, reverb, etc. I use it mostly at home because I don't play out much, although I do use it as a bass amp... I play bass in a group and I'm too poor to buy a bass amp so I use this. Since it's not a tube amp it hasn't had any real problems with the bass, and it makes my it sound very smooth and warm. This is a very nice new bass, but last year I played with a different (horrible, crappy) bass, and it made that one sound good too.

Sound Quality : 6
I am primarily a blues player and I have to express my substantial disappointment in that I can't find ANY decent grungy distorted tone on this thing. It really makes me mad, and I'm going to have to get a new amp before too long. I'm thinking mesa/boogie. If you know how to set it so that I can get such a tone, don't hesitate to let me know...

The clean tone is gorgeous though... very clean and smooth, and pretty damn warm for an oversized computer. It doesn't distort at high volumes, it's extremely nice. Although sometimes I WANT it to distort at high volumes...

Reliability : 5
A mediocre rating here... I've had a couple of problems with it. I bought it 4 years ago or so when I joined the jazz combo in high school, and I had some problems where it wouldn't turn on when I plugged it into certain outlets, but other amps would work. I don't know what that was about. And then it developed a problem where it would turn on but wouldn't make sound. Then it just wouldn't turn on. It really had a mind of its own, and a pretty cruel, wry sense of humor too I might add. One time, and I shit you not, I kicked the thing and it started working again. But eventually I got fed up so I took it to Falcetti music and had it fixed. I don't recall exactly what was wrong with it - it was quite some time ago. Since then it hasn't had any performance problems, but the nut around the input jack snapped off, along with part of the socket. I don't care though, because I probably won't bother to sell it. Also it's pretty sturdy, I should mention this... it's constantly being banged into walls and corners and furniture and whatnot because it's pretty heavy and awkward to carry, and none of the dings and bangs have affected it whatsoever. As I type this I'm sitting on it... a rather large friend of mine broke my desk chair and I've been using the amp as a chair for months. It's a very sturdy amp.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I think it was a 1 year warranty or something, I don't know, it was expired by the time I had problems with it.

I've been playing for 5 years. I own a Peavey Ltd EXP with a Roland GK-2A which I run through a GR-1 synthesizer, a Steinberger GU, and a Washburn BT. I also play a Cort 5 string bass. Since this thang don't do distortion I am forced to rely on pedals, which I hate. My pedals are a Boss Blues Driver, which is ok, and a ProCo Rat, which is a harmonic overdrive pedal that I don't like so much. If it were stolen I would happily collect the insurance money and get me a mesa/boogie or a fender amp.

My main guitar is a les paul and now this amp no way suits the type of music i wanna play. If you are into that nu-metal shit than you may like the insane setting cus its mainly just noise. The clean sound sounds ok on really low volumes but once you crank the amp up all the quality goes to shit. The bass level on all the amp models just sounds way too basey especially at high volume levels.

I have never droped or tested the amp in that way so i cant really comment on it but it has always worked for me

overall this amp is ok if you are only playin low levels at home, it is also good for the introduction of various types of effects.... but only as an introduction. There are loads more amps out there for less cost such as second hand ones which will be lots better. If it was stolen i'd count my blessings and use the money from the insurance to hire a high class prostitute. Overall, not the best around. long live tube amps

This AMP has more features than any other amp i have seen. it's has 6 amp selections, from clean to heavey insane distortion. the effects that are included rules out the need for effects prosesor. delay, flange, trem, chorus, this puppy has it all. and they are all usefull to get your own personal sound.

Sound Quality : 8
This thing sounds great. i got a washburn billy t with 2 hmbuckers, cheap guitar actually, i paid 300 bucks when it was released but now u can pick it up for 150 new. anyways, the insane distortion mode has godly distortion, and you still have the tone you would expect from a head unit. the clean i would say is very nice, i play a lot of heavey music and a lot of light clean toned music. the clean selection has excellent tone. you would swear i was pushin a $3,000 stack. this thing maintains the same sound quality at lwo and high volumes. however i ahve never ha dit passed 6 on the volume knob. i am in my school's jazz band and on 6 i shoock the prin's office at the other end of the school. "i got in so much trouble for that" i have herd better amps than this but no where for the price i paid for this. for the price this thing is and the tight sounds you get it is well worth it.

Reliability : 10
I would say this is a realiable amp, it feels very durable and i have played live many times in my school's jazz band with it. i never had it go out or just go crazy, it always performed to my epectations.

I've been playing a few years and i know my sounds to an extent.

here's a list of my equipment

Washburn billy T
Epi LP standard
Jackson Rhoads V
Marshall avt50H
Ampeg 15"
Peavey TransTube efx 65
and some old fender 10" amp

The spider has better sound quality than all of these amps and the guitars all have their own distinct sound on this amp. i currently run this amp through a digitech RP200 multi effecvts processor and i would use this untill i die, or become a millinaire and get the real shit, the multi thousand dollar mesa or sumtin. but for me, i been playing for a few years and i play a range of difrent music. and this amp gives me a range of what i can do. i'm not limited to a single sound. and the modelings are awesome by all stanards. like is aid before i's not the greatest amp and some of the features can be added on to but it is still a great amp and well worth the money. i would choose this amp over a cheap marshall head any day, unless someone wants to drop me 1500 bucks for a decent one?

My roommate purchased a Line 6 Spider 112 amp just over a year ago (~$550). One day, I turned on the amp, and the lights came on, but no sound came out. My roommate took it to a service dealer, who in turn sent it in to Line 6. About 4 weeks later, it came back with a receipt with this scribbled- "Main board fried - new one $350.00."

Now granted, it was just past the year of warranty, but this is no way to keep customers (and prevent them from trash-talking your product online). From what I have heard, Line 6 is gaining a reputation as not being reliable, too. I mean, how many guitar amplifiers DIE after just ONE year? If you look around, you will see plenty of amps that are 20+ years old, going just as good as the day they were made. And this amp was well taken care of and was NOT cranked when it stopped working. In my opinion, Line 6 should have replaced the board without any fuss.

Seeing as the amp is basically dead, I decided to take it apart to find out what the deal was. After getting the main board out, which measures about 16" x 2", I noticed that the board looked nowhere near as complicated as a decent computer motherboard, which you can get for, say, $90. (Much more R&D probably went into the computer motherboard, too.)

After briefly examining the board, I noticed that there was some charring around a lead on one of the circuits. After doing a search online, I found that the chip is a 30 watt amp commonly used in home stereos. Seeing that I have a small background in electronics, I decided to order some of these chips online and see if I could fix the amp. I purchased 3 of them (for when it blows next time) for $3.80 each.

It really makes you wonder what Line 6?s intentions really are. Rather than trying to keep a customer (which they need, more and more, it seems), they would rather have you shell out another small fortune for a $3.80 chip and an hour of labor to fix the dang thing. And you know that Line 6 buys in bulk and doesn?t even pay that much for the chips. If a $3.80 chip can fix an amp that Line 6 said was fried (and new one is $350), what does that say about Line 6 as a company, not to mention its products?

I have owned this amp for three years and play it almost daily. It has great features and I am able to get most sounds that I like out of it from metal to blues and clean. The only thing I would add would be a speaker jack for running 2X12 or 4X12. I tried running the headphone jak to a 4X12 and it does OK. Disconnect the speaker wires from the speaker and wire a basic speaker jack to those and it gives the sound a little more ass.

Sound Quality : 9
Sound....where do I start?? The sound is outstanding for what the amp is. Apparently there are multitudes of guys out there who have ADD when it comes to reading about this company, so let me help you guys out. The ads and Line 6 CLEARLY state that this is an amp which EMULATES the sound of the models offered. NO WHERE does it say that this is a TUBE amp. So many guys piss and moan that,"you can't get true tube sound!!" Well, no shit!! It DOES'NT have tubes!! Good call Einstein!! Line 6 makes truly versatile amps that offer alot to us guys who have common sense enough to read and understand what the amp is made for. If tube is your sound and you want to get that true sound, maybe you should..oh, I don't know...buy a TUBE amp!! Tubes are great but Line 6 never claimed that their modeling IS tube, it says EMULATES which for you slower guys means, sounds very similar, but not identical. This particular amp has great sounds and I would highly reccomend it.

Reliability : 10
Very dependable and tough. I say that because I have a three year old son who when I'm not watching or at work, likes to crawl on it and use the knobs as a "dashboard" for a car or airplane. After many, many turns and pushes from him, the amp still functions flawlessly. Never had any trouble.

Luckily, have'nt had to speak with them.

I have been playing for 12 years and have owned alot of amps and equipment. I play 80's model Kramers (not the new shit they call Kramer these days!!) and 80's model Charvels. I play mostly 80's metal, but still like to tinker with blues and a few other styles. If this amp were stolen, I would'nt have to buy another, because I recently upgraded to a Line 6 Flextone II Plus. But if I had only the Spider 112 and it were taken, YES most definitely I would buy it again. You can't go wrong with Line 6 gear, just make sure you read and understand what they are about before you buy one. Remember slower guys... if it does'nt specifically say TUBE AMP on any amp that you buy, then it's not a tube amp and therefore, DOES'NT have tubes in it!!! Join me next week when I'll explain the art of tying your shoes!!

Made in 2002. I play 70s-80s rock/metal and more modern stuff. This thing is great. 4 channels, you save your sounds. No effects loop(who would need it) and i wish it had an extension speaker out(besides the headphone jack) I use this amp in my house and with a 5 piece band in a basement. Its definatly loud enough to be heard over my buddys 120watt amp.

Sound Quality : 10
I use an Epiphone special(not bad for beginners), gettin a Kramer soon. I play alot of lead and this thing delivers great lead sounds. Its not noisey at all, only when i crank it and im right next to it do i get feedback. The built in noisegate gets rid of all the crackling and buzz. The clean doesnt distortion at high volumes, just gets a little bassy. If you think that this amp doesnt have enough distortion you must really suck. I use the insane channel with drive on about 5 for my rhythm and its still a ton of gain. Anyone trying for Pantera or Slipknot can easily get it.

Reliability : 10
This thing has a big shell with the speaker inside. I think its pretty durable. Id never gig without a backup but it seems like its good for it.

I love how many sounds i can get with this, nothing i can complain about besides speaker jack. I compared this to alot of amps in the price range. Randall makes a 75watter for 350 which is nice, but all the stuff i tried didnt compare in sound quality and versatilty like this did. If your considering this, go buy it.

The Spider has 6 channels, ranging from clean to heavy. It's just the right amount of power for small venues. It's a cool amp, especially if you get it after owning a crappy Squier 15 watt amp.The Spider allows you to save your 4 favorite tones. If you want to select these channels however, you have to buy a 200 footswitch, which is definately a major dissapointment.

Sound Quality : 10
When I first got this amp I was very happy because I could achieve insane gain. I was using the split treble/middle position, and as my ear grew stronger, I realized that it sounded horribly sterile. So I changed to the treble pickup, backed off the gain and re-EQed the whole thing. WHAT A DIFFERENCE! I can play along to a song using a rectifier and my tone is EXACTLY the same. All the tones are amazing

Features? Why only the most realistic amp models ever. I play in a jazz/fusion/deathmetal/blues band, and this little amp does the job! It has everything I want. Just set it to the "insane" model, turn the treble all the way up, bass and mid all the way down, and your're on your way to tonal heaven!

Sound Quality : 10
Like I said, realistic. I think most of the amp models sound better than the real thing! There is no musician alive who can tell the difference between this amp and a "real" tube amp. I'm using a B.C. Rich Bronze Series Warlock(better tone than a Les Paul) with this amp, and I have had other musicians ask me my secret to my perfect tone! Yeah, the amp is that good, but so am I. I tune down to open B, so my guitar just sings thru this amp. Very clear bell like tone.

I spoke with several kind folks at Line6 before I bought this amp. They were very helpful. The let me know that by using their amp, I have a better chance of getting a record deal. Better tone baby, thats what they're looking for! No doubt about it!

A few nice choices on this amp: Clean, Twang, Blues, Crunch, Recto, and Insane... You also have a few choices with effects on it as well... I can't think of them off the top of my head. Anyways, this amp is fucking sick. I played through a Peavey Transtube 212, a Peavy Special 212, and a Tech 21... When I arrived at the Line6 Spider 112, I was skeptical. I had played through this amp before, and I wasn't impressed before, but I never got to sit down and actually tweak with things. Anyways, I'll explain more in sounds. This amp delivers with so much power and clarity... I almost wet myself when I played on Recto, and when I went to the Insane setting, I did... The effects weren't too impressive, but they aren't bad, they're good and do what they're supposed to.

Sound Quality : 9
Now... This amp hits brutally. This amp delivers on so many sounds. I cannot say much though, all I can say is what I think and you must figure your own thoughts out. I recommend that you go to your nearest guitar store (Guitar Center if you want, but personally, I hate those dirty f****) and play on some amps. I didn't know what I wanted, I thought I wanted a Marshall AVT50, then I thought I wanted a Crate MX120 w/ a distortion pedal... This amp may be for you, it's for me for sure, but you need to sit down and play on an amp, play every style and every riff... You really have to play on an amp, and choose wisely. If it's not loud enough for you, but you like practicing with it, buy a god damned 4x12 or 2x12, or an addition 12" speaker... This can push it. If you like practicing with it and it sounds nice, you can buy the additional speaker, remember that. That's better than buying the Spider 212, it sounds better when you add on the speaker, rather than purchase the 212. I played this amp LOUDLY... It didn't bottom out, it just shook my balls and aroused me in a way I've never been aroused before. I played Led Zeppelin "Over the Hills and Far Away", and it sounded great, then I played Metallica "Harvester of Sorrow", and it sounded great... It's a real diverse amp... I love it, but like I said... GO TO A GUITAR STORE, AND PLAY THROUGH A BUNCH OF AMPS, FIND WHAT YOU LIKE!!! Lastly, the amp has factory presets, they're presets that are made to sound like a certain amp. If you want your own clean sound or distortion sound and you switch it to one of those, zero out everything (the eq, volume, everything), and then put it the way you like it, that's only way to really see this amp at it's best...

Reliability : 8
It's built solidly, and it seems it'll last. Remember though, any fucking amp can have a defect, so I can't say anything here. There is a warranty though, so you can get your shit fixed if something is wrong.

Customer Support : 8
Good

Overall Rating : 10
I said everything I need to say. This amp is great, but I can't expound on this... You need to go and find out for yourself, and take your time when you do, sit down and play... It'll be worth it.

I got my Spider almost two years ago and Ive been playing it with a Fender Fat Strat. The variety of sounds you can crank from this amp are pretty incredible for the price. I play mostly rock and alternative (Ozzy, Boston, Hendrix, Red Hot Chili Peppers, etc.) and I can usually modify the tones to get pretty close to what the guitar is supposed to sound like. The recto and insane are really good quality distortion and suit me for any type of distortion that I need. The only major drawback is the crunch tone. It doesnt have that extra kick that Im looking for. If I could crank out a little more distortion (possibly with better pickups) then crunch would probably sound just like a real marshall. The chorus and delay effects (especially the tap tempo) are good but Ive found that the tremolo is pretty much useless. The clean settings are crystal clear. I never practice with the volume much above 4 or 5 but it gets a lot clearer and distinct at higher volume levels.

Reliability : 8
I just play as a hobbyist so I dont gig with this amp. Ive only had one problem so far. For some reason the sound would get routed through my headphone jack when i didnt have any headphones plugged in. I put up with it for about a week but it never got better. I called up the local line6 representative and he was exremely responsive and helpful. He returned my call immediately and set up an appointment right away. When they took in my amp for repairs they gave me a loner that I used for the duration of the repairs. Line6 ended up replacing my headphone jack twice and now my amp works fine. It wasnt too much of an inconvenience cause the local rep was responsive and he gave me loner- plus it was still under warranty so it didnt cost me jack. Other than that ive had no problems with reliability.

I dont know why these other people have been complaining about with the muddiness... just turn down the bass idiots. rock on!!

I've got a '89 Fender Tele with a Seymour Duncan '57 Hot Tele lead or somesuch. I love the standard lipstick neck pickup though... I play everything and anything, from Country to Radiohead to Placebo to SRV to loads of non-pigeon-holeable alternative music, Jazz, Folk, etc. When I started playing I had a 12 watt Marshall practice amp which was alright for a beginner I s'pose. Then I had a Marshal JTM-30 valve amp for seven years which sounded warm and fat at low volumes, totally clean with no reverb. Any other setting and I just couldn't get a tone that I liked. Loud, it sounded all washed together and was just...well...loud, but you couldn't hear the notes and chordal harmonies that you'd worked all this time to setup and be able to play proficiently and passionately. I've played a bluesbreaker JTM-45 '68 I think, and never got one sound out of that I liked, I'm bored with the Marshall sound and being restricted by the one-amp feel. I bought the Spider and I loved it. I haven't gigged it yet although I've had it up to 7 or 8 in the house. I've been playing for 12 years and I'm no slouch. I'm a tone freak and expression is everything. I'm confused as to what the other reviews on this site are going on about. The tone is great, there's none of that muddy, lumpy, not-sure-what-notes-are-being-played-just-sounds-like-some-power-chord-or-another-Marshall-garbage. You go through any of the distortion modes on the Spider and you retain clarity throughout. You can hit a chord up at the twelfth with some open strings vibrating like crazy and you can here every string in it's individuality...I've been looking for that for a very very long time. I paid $350 including the footswitch, I paid a lot more for my JTM-30. With all the effects, diverse amp sounds, you can't get all that for the same money...and you want tubes too? Some people on this page must have their head up their respective arses. If you've got a grand to spend on a lovely tube amp with pedals galore and blah and blish then why did you buy a Spider in the first place? If I could afford a Ferrari, I wouldn't buy a Ford Mustang or whatever and complain that it doesn't drive/sound/handle like a Ferrari and if I couldn't afford a Ferrari then I'd try and find the best that I could for the money I did have and shut the fuck up about it. I don't want to bash out G,C and D with an E minor break and I don't want to sound like Oasis, The Verve or Bryan Adams, so I didn't buy a Marshall or a Marshall sound-alike. Most people with Marshall stacks can't play for toffee anyway, they're a rock-icon backdrop, grrr..."tubes are better, tubes are better", whine whine whine, 'cause their best mate told 'em so and they read it in Grrr-tarist magazine...what-ever!
The Spider is excellent! Don't be fooled by expensive limitations and dogma embedded in traditionalist views that aren't there for any aural reason.

I think it's great. So easy to setup and play with. I've tried to use some effects pedal/amp emulators that have hi-fi instructions with them and just sound shite no matter what you do. I'd get delay, tremelo, chorus and some kind of decent distortion pedals anyway, they're built in so I don't have to. The tone is fantastic, I play a lot of clean stuff, the twang thing sounds cool, insane is smart for going mental...it's all so good, I'm totally stoked with it. I wonder if bad press makes interesting reading, see advice on filling in this form at top of page --- "BE CRITICAL! Nothing is perfect. Superficial, glowing reviews may not get published. " --- What the fuck? Even if there's loads of 'em? If you want to just plug in and play and have great tone, diverse amp sounds to keep you fresh and half-decent effects to throw into the mix, then this is a cool amp. I'd get another if I lost this one. I spent weeks playing a tonne of different amps and have played loads of my mates' amps over the years; Fender tubes, Laney tubes, loads of Marshalls, Kustom (The ultimate in shite!), Peavey (tone, what tone?), Roland Jazz (nice)...this Spider is the bomb from an all-round, value for money, tone and usability perspective. Go and play one and don't listen to half the horse-shit on these reviews, make your own mind up and compare it to everything that you can find.

MM...well i reckon you can ignore half the reviews here as this seem to be by valve obsesses computer illiterates, who frankly,im amazed can even get on the web.If you have an issue with playing thru what you regard as a "digital" amp, then er,dont buy one?

Anyhow, yes the thing runs out of steam at high volume. However it is loud enough for small pub gigs and the headphone out does a reasnoble job of doing a line out impersonation if you need to..

I changed the speaker to a bog-standard celestion g12t-75 which sounds better and has a bit more headroom and clarity.Id advise swapping speakers as a first step with one of these puppies.

regarding sounds,

The heavy lead(recto) sounds are great as is the clean stuff. The jtm45/blues/crunch settings aren`t as good and really do give away the digital source of the sounds,so if you mainly want blues id look elsewhere. However if you want mega-filth to trannie clean then its great.

I replaced my rockman x100 amp with this spider and am pretty happy with it.

Yep,its digital, yep it sounds a bit digital(but who can tell in a mix? -or thru a crappy pub PA)

It also ways bugger all, wont need feeding #100 worth of valves on a regular basis and has built in,though basic fx.

For what it is ,it rocks.

I think because it`s supposed to do a good 4x12 recto impression people are comparing it to a 4x12 and a head. This is a bit unfair. The amp should be compared to a 1x12 not a 4x12!

Considering the above i preffered it to the marshall valvestate/me and peavey transtubes i tried. It does an excellant job as bedroom/practice/headphone amp and also as small gig amp.If you need more volume mic it up or use headphone out..

if however you macho image really needs to be bolstered by carrying around a recto-truck and 4x12 and you have the associated vehicle to move all this stuff(not to mention cash to buy and then feed it valves) then of course you`l be dissapointed..

Would have been a 10 but no footswitch - Lots (see other reviews for details)... and with a very useable interface, although don't expect to be able to tweak all the parameters. However remember you need to get one of the footswitches (FB4 is basic, floorboard does the lot but is expensive) to really get the benefit of the amps programmability. You can also take a direct line out for recording which is like a cut down POD, this is also very useful for headphone practice so I don't disturb my children/neighbours.

Sound Quality : 7
There are so many useable sounds, not as versatile as a pod or flextone but still loads of class sounds, I like the glassy cleans with my strat and the harder modern rock sounds work great with my washburn idol live, and recording its got these and a few great vintage tones too. The effects are great too and again go from vintage tremelo (I've discovered surf sounds) to edge style pingpong delay and modern bright chorus. The only short coming is that these sound great at low volume but out gigging and up load they don't have the dynamic range of valves or anything like the volume, in fact I've been completely blown out by a 30w peavey valve and a 40w marshall both of which were just ticking over. This is my biggest criticism as I wanted good sounds at low volume for home and gig level volume on stage. If I were the only guitar 50w of transistor power stage would be enough for a small gig but add another guitar or play a bigger room and you'll need to mike up. I guess you can't have both in one amp. Incidentally at low volume the Spider sounds at least as good as valves and there are many more sounds available.

This is great amp, I've been playing for nearly 20 years and never had a decent amp until I got this about two years ago. I wish we'd had amps of this quality when I was gigging regularly 12 years ago. I still kind of wish I'd gone down the valve route but listening to the sounds it makes and considering what it does for the money you can't really go wrong with this amp. Its great at home for practice and recording, good for small gigs and you could always mike it up for more grunt.

Basically this amp BLOWS!!!! Sounds real muddy and harsh when you crank it a little. This amp belongs to my friend because I have more sense. It only sounds tolerable at low practice volumes. I don't think it would cut it on gigs or jams and that basically makes it useless. And for $400 there are so many amps that would blow this away. Sure it has alot of features, but they're not that great. The reverb sucks! it's real low even when you turn it up. The amp models I'm sure don't hold a candle to the real TUBE amps they're trying to simulate. The effects are generic but you don't get much control over them, and finally the amp just looks stupid!! It has no class. It looks real cheap and toy-like!! What a piece o' fuckin shit!!

Reliability : 7
From most of the reviews these amps seem to blow up frequently and the service centers have a fairly bad reputation. I know this one still works plus it's not played much anyway. I sure as hell wouldn't take one out on a gig!!

Customer Support : No Opinion
From the other reviews they seem to have conplaints with line 6. I would never deal with them so I don't care.

Overall Rating : 1
It's my friends amp and he's a novice guitar player, so I guess it doesn't matter. The amps only plea for existence would be for a practice amp, but there are SO many other amps out there that sound better and are cheaper too!! If it were lost or stolen I would be very happy for my friend then he would be forced to get a better amp!! I prefer real tube amps, even some cool solid state ones, like I said I would never buy this amp. As far as LINE 6 goes, they are all about DIGITAL SHIT!! I'ts bad enough keyboards are more like computers nowadays that instruments, but amps? guitars? LINE 6 just came out with a digital modeling guitar!! What the &#$%!! The whole digital thing just don't fly with me, because anyone who has any sense knows real tube amps are what it's all about. The best thing LINE 6 makes is the delay modeler. But the Spider, we'll maybe one day it will be a contender for the "MOST HORRIBLE AMPS EVER MADE" hall of fame!!

I bought this amp about three years ago. It's held up perfectly with no problems. Line 6 specializes in modelling other "classic" amps, so there are many options. It's very versatile, as versatility is the objective of Line 6. The Spider has 6 amp models that you can shoose from, four programmable channels, controls for bass, mid, treble, reverb, drive, master volume, and channel volume. What's also nice is the digital built in effects. You can choose from tremolo, chorus, flange, delay, tape echo, and ping pong. There's also a headhone jack. A great amp for experimenting with your sound, and trying to find your sound, without trying out a ton of other amps.

Sound Quality : 8
I've been using a Jackson RX10, with a Seyour Duncan JB in the bridge and a 59 in the neck. A Lynch ESP with a Seymour Duncan Distortion, and an ESP strat with a Dimarzio Fast Track 2 in the bridge, Gold Lace Sensor in the middle, and Seymour Duncan Hot Rails in the neck. I'm mostly a metal guitarist, but this amp can suit any kind of music. I experimented with all the modes when I bought it, but now that I've found my style I only use a few different settings. There are two clean modes modelled off vintage fender amps. One is "clean" the other "twang". The amp seems to be a bit "bass heavy". I had to tweak the EQ's a bit before finding a suitable clean tone. I found that rolling the bass and drive knobs down to 50% at the most worked the best, while leaving the treble relatively high, and the mid wherever you desire. The only real difference between these modes is tone and voicing. You'll probably pick the one you like the best and play on that always. I ended up only using the clean, as i liked it better than the twang. The next two modes on the knob are "blues" and "crunch" both modelled off early 60's Marshall amps, like the Bluesbreaker. The blues channel is pretty sweet, great lead tone for that Dire Straits type sound. Add a little chorus and delay and it really sounds good. I didn't really like the crunch mode very much. It doesn't have that traditional Marshall High End. It's a very low end crunch, and sounds better at higher volumes, but even then you have to turn the bass knob down a bit and keep the treble fairly high. I didn't like it but that doesn't mean you won't. The last two are the "recto" and the very impressive "insane". Both modelled off the Mesa/Boogie Dual Rectifier. I eventually ended up only using the insane. The recto sounds better at higher volumes, and the Insane works better at lower volumes. Think a Boogie with an overdrive pedal or something. The amp pushed 50 watts, and the Insane holds up nicely at higher volumes but you can kind of hear that artificial tone that comes with digital amps, and it can get noisy, but it still sounds great. The recto and insane have a natural scooped mid tone, and again are bass heavy. I would, again, roll the bass down to at least 60%, and the treble fairly high. I would adjust the mids according to what guitar I'm using. It's worth getting this amp alone for the "Insane" mode, especially if your a metal guitarist, or want to develop into one. I loved it, and it inspired me to go out and buy the real thing, the Mesa/Boogie Dual Rectifier. It's great for those of you either beginning for trying to find your sound and tone, without trying many different amps.

Reliability : 10
I've had it for about three years, and never had one problem with it.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never had to deal with them

Overall Rating : 10
I've been playing for several years, now selling the Line 6 spider on ebay, as I now own the Dual Rectifier powering a Marshall 4X12 cab. I also use a Boss SD-1 for making fine adjustments at lower volumes, and a Boss CH-1, an Ibanez delay/echo, and a Crybaby wah-wah. Again, I highly recommend it for those trying to find their sound, and what kind of guitarist you are or wish to become. Great for the beginner and developing your skills. You'll eventually want to upgrade, but this amp will help you decide what you want to upgrade to. A Great amp for what it does.

Lotsa features, but overpriced for a practice amp, which is basically all it is. On top of that, you have to buy the Line 6 footswitch, and that's an additional $200. Ridiculous. I gotta give it points for the flashing lights on the front. It's like a mini-pachinko parlor you can plug your guitar into. lol

Sound Quality : 3
Sounds good in the showroom or in your bedroom, but you won't be able to use it with a band. Not enough power, and the sounds are too midrangy for ensemble situations. You just won't hear it in the mix. Most of the sounds are over-processed, and it doesn't have a useful clean sound. Extreme distortion is fun, but you can get that and more with just a POD.

Reliability : 2
The Line 6 rep claims it's made in the USA, but if you look at the back of the amp, you can see the CE mark... It's made in China. It looks cool, but it will not take any kind of abuse that most kids will dish out... The plastic parts of the front will break and you'll be screwed.

Customer Support : 1
The Line 6 rep lied to me in the store. Not a good sign. They make a couple good products, but they are overpriced, and the success has gone to their head. Avoid Line 6. Stick with a real amp company like Fender, Peavey, or Yamaha.

Overall Rating : 1
This amp would be great if it was $100. It's a practice amp. For $300, or anything close to that, you can get a much better amp from Peavey, Fender, or Yamaha. And usually those amps come with the footswitch.

I rated it 7 for good effects but EQ is a little confusing.

I bought this amp in 2002.
It has "amp models" Clean, Twang, Blues, Crunch, Retro, Insane.
It has Chorus, Flange, Tremelo on one knob.
It has Delay, Tape Echo and Ping Pong on the other effects knob.
And finally Reverb.

The EQ features are quite deceptive. It has the standard, Bass, Mid, Treble and Drive. Or does it? After reading the Manual there are many more adjustments you can make. (Like presence, that you should add for leads.) And the Drive knob seems to react to the Channel Volume knob. After reading mixed reviews I would suggest that people should reset the factory defaults on the amp and go from there. (It's in the manual.)

I like to play hard rock and sometimes blues type music. I would think this amp and a good wah pedal and your ready to go.

Sound Quality : 8
I use a Ibanez 570: hum, single, hum (V8, S7, V7)
I also use a DeArmond JetStar: Hum, Hum,

I'll be honest, I use this as a practice amp and rarely turn it past 4. But When I do it seems OK. The Distortion channels are very good. I tend to stick to retro. Insane can be good for leads.

My test consisted of the Single coil on the Ibanez, and both lead Humbucker pick-ups on both guitars. I also switched cords several times. (How long have you had your cord? How many times have you yanked, stepped, mashed, kinked and bent it? If an amp or guitar sounds really good in the store and spec-Crap-ular at home this is a very simple thing to check....) All tested well.

For my styles of guitar it's very copecetic. As long as you take the time to learn how to adjust it.

Reliability : No Opinion
It has never broken. I never really gave it any conditions where it would. So far so good.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I haven't dealt with them.

I"ve been playing for about 8 years. I never had the impression that I was going to be anything but a computer geek. (AKA not a rock star) I tried many different pieces of equipment, from the early unreliable Park's, to decent Peavy's, to Fenders. As affordable small combo amps go this has been the best so far. I will buy another if lost.

2001 model - 6 (digital) amp models from Fender clean to beyond Mesa type distortion, adjustable chorus/flanger/tremolo/delay section, shared headphones/line out, 50 watts, 4 user presets (should have been more given the amount of possible settings)

Sound Quality : 6
I was running my lefty Am Std strat with original p/u's through it, playing blues, rock, jazz etc. The first couple of days I was impressed with the sound - I couldn't imagine the thin sounding standard strat bridge p/u would sound so fat when using the Spider's Mesa settings. However, I soon got disappointed by the sterile sounds I got from the Spider. For rhythm it was fairly ok, it's just that I couldn't find any usable lead sounds, which I think is not due to the rather neutral stock p/u's I'm using (will be replaced soon anyway) because my current Laney LC15 tube amp sounds way more warm, fat and musical to me. The Spider's clean (Fender) setting sounded ok with a little bit of chorus, although not really special on it's own. The blues (JTM), crunch (plexi) and recto (guess what?) settings all had a nice crunch, but kind of a lifeless lead tone.
Further, the line out was way too noisy to record from when plugged into my PC's soundcard or when directly recording it on minidisc.

Maybe the Spider sounds a lot better when cranked, but in my case, it just didn't suit my needs. If you're looking for a cheap way to drive your neighbours crazy with Mesa type distortion, buy it; if you're looking for serious tone you might want to consider a decent tube amp. I think the Spider doesn't capture the feel of a warm, musical sounding amp (yet).

I use a single coil strat and a custom 2 humbucker strat. I play rock and blues. This is a good low volume practice amp. It is horrible for playing at live music volumes with a band. The sound at high volumes is very, very, very harsh. I used to think I was just a bad guitar player, I sounded ok at low volumes but bad when playing with my band. Then last week I bought a Mesa Boogie tube amp. No words can describe the difference. Suddenly I sound like a rock star with huge incredibly warm tone. I like to hear myself play now! Do yourself a favor and don't buy this amp for playing with a band. I used to be skeptical about tube amp hype, but not anymore. Bottom line, solid state amps sound worse the louder they get, tube amps sound better the louder they get. I know the amp only costs $400, but no price is a bargin if you sound bad.

I'm not bitter about Line 6 or this amp, but it made me sound terrible at loud volumes. I now know from my new amp, that the problem was the amp, not my playing. It sounds great in the store or bedroom, but don't try and play loud.

I think a 2000 model...4 channels in memory...it's all been said before. I play mainly punk and rock, but also do some jazz and everything in between. It was my first real amp (not counting the old ampeg bass amp hand-me-down from my uncle i was playing out of), and at the time it was everything i could have wanted. Now, i wich it could have a direct out for another speaker cab so that i could bypass that shi**y speaker in there. Im not sure if that would even be worth it. I was around 11 or 12 at the time, but now that im 14 and im beginning to play a lot more gigs with my band and go into studios and send out demos, i realize that it's not cutting it anymore. See below for more...

Sound Quality : 5
I play a Mexican strat, but mostly my American Series strat (single coil, stock pickups which are im my opinion excellent) and as i said, it was perfect at the beginning. It has taken me 2 years to tweak this amp to the sounds i was looking for and it's still not what i want. The stock speaker in the line 6 is terrible! Muddy as all hell, and the notes are not pronounced at all! I am forced to do my recordings through the headphone jack, and with a $400 amp you shouldn't have to suffer for that. Every channel can be tweaked to fit your style, but other than that, this amp isn't worth it.

Reliability : 9
As i said, i have had it for 2 years...many gigs, and tons of practices. the only problem i had was when i could not get the delay to turn off...it was however only a temporary problem.

Customer Support : 9
Ive asked questions about how to attain different sounds and how to attempt hooking it up to a cabinet (without a direct output...) on their website and i usually got an answer back within at the most 3 or 4 days. Not sure about the warrantee..never mailed in the warrantee card.

Overall Rating : 6
Ive been playing for 4 years almost. I own about everything i have mentioned:
Fender American Series Strat
Fender Mexican Std. Strat
Ampeg B-100 Bass Amp
If it were stolen...i probably wouldn't rush to replace it, as i am saving up for a Mesa Boogie Rect-O-Verb. I am in love ith that amp..More than 4 time the price of the Line 6, but in my opinion, definately worth it. I chose this amp because in the beginning, i didnt need more than this. It was great until i started learning what my amp should be. It should have had a direct out and a nicer speaker in it...maybe a celestion..i thought about it but it wasnt worth the money to drop in a new speaker into it. Personally, i think if you are a beginner, this may be a good amp, but if you plan on gigging and recording then look for something else. It was too much money for me to be asking more of it.

Spider 112, 4 channels. but It should have CD input. So players can jam along with their favourite songs. 50 watts but not specific that power is Peek or RMS. But it is certainly a good home practise amp. Channel switching is very cool. but Flanger is not good. and i dont think it would be a good live stage amp. But I have to say that this amp should come with atleast FB4 foot pedal. $400 is quite spendy........

Sound Quality : 8
I've played my spider 112 with gibson SG, PRS and they sound really great. but when i plugged my Jackson which has Dmarzio XN2 and Duel sound Humbucker, I was really surprised that this amp can kick major ass. but this amp is noisy when i switch my humbuckers to single coils. My music style is kinda heavy so i definitely pick INSANE. but this is for sure that this amp is not for COUNTRY musicians and the guitarists who love to play 60's and 70's. I've played Marshall DSL401, AVT50, Peavey Ultratube 410, Banndit, Classic 30 etc. but Line6 spider 112 has really cool sound that i have to admit. i saved my own 4 setting on those 4 channels. and very easy to use if you know how to dig. I liked the Insane and Twang channels the best. specially Insane has that killer type distortion that i didnt find on some Marshalls, Peaveys etc.

Bought this amp new in 2001. I like all the features, especially the built-in effects and the whole memory button idea although I wish it had six or eight buttons instead of only four.

Sound Quality : 6
I bought this amp thinking it might replace my Mesa/Boogie mkIII head, 4-12 cab and gnarly effects rack for smaller gigs and impromtu jams at friend's houses. At low volume (bedroom practice) it succeeds and sounds great but as the volume knob goes up, the tone goes to shit and ends up super thin and dead like an old transistor a.m. radio. Bummer! Oh well, as a practice amp it's killer but to jam along with drums and bass---forget it. The volume is there no problem but unfortunatly it's shit-tone volume. Maybe I haven't tweaked the knobs enough and exhausted all tonal possibilities yet, I don't know if that will even help any...
Gotta admit I love the "insane" distortion setting---it's nice and thick and chunky with lots of overtones (again, at low volume only).
The effects sound good---the chorus and delay are excellent but the reverb sounds kinda weak. What's the deal? Digital reverb should sound beautiful but this sounds like a cheap spring unit.
Also, I wish I could turn off the noise gate---I never liked 'em cuz they rob you of sustain and choke the end of your searing lead notes.

Reliability : 9
I've only had this thing for about eight months but so far, so good. No problems that the other reviewers speak of (knock on wood).

Haven't had a reason to deal with them yet (keeping my fingers crossed).

I've been playing for 32 years and been in too many bands to keep track of, mostly playing 70's progressive hard rock. I play a PRS w/Duncan Screamin' Demon pickups which sounds great through my Mesa/Boogie half stack, Peavy 5150 combo, Crate GFX 65 combo and yes, even my Spider 112 combo (you guessed it---low volume only).
Maybe someday they'll make my dream amp which would consist of a 60 watt head (or combo) with built in digital effects (chorus, reverb & delay) BUT each effect would have it's own on/off footswitch jack, giving me stompbox versatility without the stompboxes. Maybe they're designing it right now as I speak...

If you're reading my post, you've read all the others about what features this piece of shit amp has.

If you want tone, forget this, unless you're looking to sound like a Nu Metal band. The twang channel was nice, as was the clean channel, but was very thin and brittle. They were no better than any other solid-state amp could produce, though. The reverb was nice, and I did like the ping-pong echo.

With the distortion on, the treble pot becomes usless. You're going to sound like KoRn for sure. If you like that, great. When you get out of high school, you probably won't.

I found the amp to be very noisy, and Line 6 is crazy if they think this thing can really push 50 watts. It's more like 30.

Reliability : No Opinion
I kept the amp a matter of 30 minutes after I got it. I knew there was no way this amp was going to work for me.

Didn't keep it long enough.

Run from this amp unless you're a teenage beginner into Nu Metal. Otherwise, I think you'll be disappointed. The clean channels are okay, but if you're looking for clean, buy a Fender. You'll get a better deal and a better sound.

I bought the Line 6 as my first amp, but also to play with a band at moderate gigging volume. The spider had an impressive range of effects, and channel-storing features I thought would be rather useful. The amp came recommended from every salesperson at several national music stores in my area, so I bought it. The preset channels are rather weak - they needed some serious eq and channel volume adjustment, but with ten minutes, you can have four channels from clean to Recto and everywhere in between with little effort. The onboard effect section fell short of my expectations. The chorus effect is the only truly valid sound, beyond the standard reverb. The flanger lacks depth, and the tremolo was a bad choice to add in, as it is not an effect used terribly often in modern music, it swells to much, simulating a volume knob spin. The delay section isn't too useful, as even on the highest setting is barely audible (when set to a reasonable delay time - .25 seconds or so) Overall, the features didn't work out as planned beyond the amp modeling features - the effects suffered.

Sound Quality : 8
I play an LP, (yes, gibson for you brand snobs), but have used the spider with other guitars. With a strat, it is weak, but with humbuckers, it really fills out. My band plays straightforward rock, we go for classic tone, tube overdrive sound, without silly effects, extra distortion (insane channel is too much) or excessive volume. The spider has always had enough volume to solo, even with a whole band. It only had to be miked at a big local club, for something like 1200 people. For in town gigs, it works out nicely, and fits in the trunk. The prompt for this submission asks "how brutal is the distortion?" and this seems a silly question, as distortion tortured until "brutal" loses efficacy and in the language of the masses - sucks. The Line 6 guys kept this in mind, and you just can't get crappy, circular-saw type sounds from this amp. Hallelujah!

Reliability : 10
I've used this amp on probably 20 gigs since I bought it a year ago. It has never had any problems with manufacture, and I have never talked to Line 6 about anything. I wouldn't hesitate taking it anywhere.

Customer Support : No Opinion
This is not applicable, see above under "Reliability"

Overall Rating : 9
Overall, I must commend Line 6 for their efforts. In short, the effects are lacking, but in terms of power, tone, reliability, and practicality, this amp is great. If you want metal, don't buy this amp. If you have money right out the ass, and "own over 40 guitars" and think you are the king of the guitar world, don't buy this amp. If you want to rock, and not have to break the bank or your back, go for it.

Here is the funny part. I am 30 and play in two different cover bands. I am not 17 trying to sound like Wes Borland or Korn. I do like a lot of heavy music though (Disturbed, etc.) I play out very often (most weekends) in both small clubs and larger venues, and make pretty good money playing in bands. Between PA and guitar, I own more equipment than most people ever will (or would want to). I play everything from 60s and 70s rock, to Lit and Puddle of Mud, and everything in between. I've played everything through this amp: Les Paul Standard, Paul Reed Smith CE24, Strats, single coils, humbuckers, EMGs..This amp absolutely rules at practice volume but absolutely sucks at stage volume. Forget trying to play this amp live for most applications. I practice with this amp everyday and I am amazed at the versatility this thing has...but ONLY at practice volume. Do not buy this amp and think all your tones and pedal hassles are solved. You will be mistaken. (A friend of mine made that mistake. $400 for the amp and $70 for the footswitch aint cheap). Most of the distortion models are weak excuses for the amp they are supposed to emulate. My advice if you're looking at Line 6 is to get a Flextone 2. Way better distorted sounds and much better output options. I am glad I bought mine used and got a deal. I use a Mesa/Boogie Nomad 55 through various cabs and a few pedals for my main rig.

This is where I have to update. I play christian praise and worship so it requires a lot of versatility. We had an outside event coming up so I spent some time getting my "big rig" ready. Ordered a dunlop wah and got out my stompboxes. In short I could not obtain the sound I get from this little critter. I ended up ditching my "big rig" and using my normal spider set up which is to mic it through the pa. This I always do. But outside the sound was awesome, the tone unbelieveable and you couldn't even see the amp unless you were looking for it. It was close mic'd at a 45 degree angle off the speaker and it cranked. Even the rest of the team agreed the sound couldn't be achieved with any of the other rigs we have. Needless to say I sent the wah back because it just couldn't get the voice of the floorboard wah. I mean this thing is musical. The dunlop couldn't come close. The tones of this amp are incredible by comparison. Emulation here is good if not great. Now I have been playing since I was 13 which mean 37 years of playing through most everything. After having this for a year I am sold. Remember you must have the luxury of being able to mic it and the floorboard does give ready access to all the features. These two things are a must. If you have that you will have a rig that will be quite rewarding and quite portable. One thing is to have the volume at least 3 and preferably 4 to really access the tone of this amp. Another is to use the effects sparingly. In my line less is more. I still rarely if ever use the insane, but with the rest of the channels tweaking will get you what you want and tweaking is easy. I use this with both a tele and les paul, both standard without mods. Do not overlook this little gem

2001 model. The amp is not mine but a good friends. It has many effects which many of them are useless. the crunch setting is about the best one. Insane setting has way to much harmonics even for our metal band. the reverb is ok fut all the others need to go. the amp is fifty watts of solid state power(for those of you that dont know solid state means keep away or crap) the amp has no effects loop or speaker out

Sound Quality : 4
The insane setting on the amp is ok when its on about 4 but anything past all you hear is noise. The clean channel is slightly loud and does sound ok for solid state power. my friend tries to play with my at gigs but once i go into the chorus or a loud part he's almost obsolete

All the little lights are pretty and appealing at first but there deffinately there to hide the sound of the solid stae power. I would never buy one. I suggest you save your money and get a real tube amp

i have just bought a spider 112, mainly because i wanted the volume, and effects in one small unit also i needed a floorboard for live gigging, because i couldnt fint the floorboard for my peavey pro fex 2. anyway, it is the best thing ive ever done, it was well worth the 700 poundsi payed for the amp and floorboard together, i wanted steve vai's sound, i got steve vai's sound, hendrix (yes), jason becker (hell yes), mesa boogie sound (you bet your behind) its great, all i ever wanted. But, i will add that myself and im sure plenty other guitarists would like to have an intelligent harmoniser i need it for the style of music i play and maybe a line out and midi on the spider 112. Otherwise, all i have to say is, congratulations 'LINE 6' you did the virtually impossible, i mean, 'mesa boogie' on a combo, WOW.... i love it, thanks 'LINE 6'............. Dean 'BEAMO' Lazenby, (Area 69)

Sound Quality : 8
the insane sound, sounds great with my ibanez rg 450 my inf bridge pickup and insane tone are great for steve vai sounds, might need more tone for some sounds though, an example is your clean sound it needs a bit more oomph guys 'n' girls

i can depend on it personally, it never gets banged or knocked about and is not pushed over its limit although it is a very durable pice of equipment

the 4 channels to save user settings are very nice. also the build-in effects. i miss an effect loop and external jacks to connect a cabinet.

The different sounds are okay. clean to distortion is okay. but this amp is not as "direct" as a real tube amp. the build-in flanger is terrible, the chorus is lower average. delay and reverb are usable.

But the "direct" sound of a real tube amp is not to perform by this amp

This amp has alot of features. The ability to start with different amp sounds and add color from there is great. Having them available to be stored and recalled at the step of a switch is even better. This amp is a great idea but it falls short. Without the pedal board(which costs 1/2 as much as the amp) the amp is almost useless. Once you have it you realize you should have saved your money. No effects loop ( hello this is 2002?!?!?!?!?) The internal sounds are interesting but your limited to them. Also the speaker (which sucks) is hard wired. You cannot plug this into another cabinet which furter limits it. This is a practice amp at best. The lack of an line out, XLR output or effects loop realy screws it recording ability.

Sound Quality : 3
I bought this from a friend who was upgrading to a better amp. When I first heard it I thought it was interesting. As I turned the volume up I found it started to sound like what it is, a solid state amp. At low apartment or bedroom volume it sounds ok but as soon as you turn it up it really starts to suck. It's rated at 50 watts. I find that to be a generous rating. I havn't bothered to play with others with this amp because I know it's limitation. I recently auditioned a guitarist who showed up with one and you could not hear him above the rest of the band. When no one else was playing, his sound resembled an old portable am radio at full volume.

Reliability : No Opinion
I've had it for a year. My friend had it 6 months. I don't play it frequently but when I do it works so.......

I've been playing since I was 14, I'm 32 now (eeeww). I am in a working band and I record with my band and others regularly. This amp is not part of my working arsenal. It literally lives in the basement of my house and I pull it out once in a blue moon when I feel like justifying the purchase.
For guitar amps I also own a Fender HR Deville 2-12 and Vibrolux Reverb, a Marshall Jubilee head/cab and Lead 12 Micro Stack, a Matchless DC-30, Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier and a Yamaha DG-100 modeling amp. The Yamaha is much beter at modeling than the Line 6 products including the Flextones. It really acts like a tube amp. as you turn up the volume the sound actually improves instead of deteriorates like with the Line 6s. Alas, there is no substitute for tubes.
Guitar wise I own over 40 guiitars and literally have like one of everything. Strats, Teles, Les Pauls, hollow bodies, 12 string electrics, 7 strings, Gibsons, Fenders, Gretsches, Ibanezes, Washburns, Charvels, Kramers, Carvins, and a bunch of other assorted makes. I belive that guitars have their own distinctive sounds as well as guitars. Mixing the quailities makes it interesting. Unfortunatly with this Spider, everything sounds similar.
If this was stolen I would pay the theif to keep it. I am NOT impressed at all. For a low voume practice amp instead of a Peavey Backstage it's ok but I would rather an old Fender Champ.

The features on this amp are great. It gives you a choice of 6 channels; clean, twang, blues, crunch(nice), recto and insane(awesome!). The built in FX are great as well. It has a flanger, chorus and tremelo as well as three types of delay. The tap tempo button is really useful to get just the right sound. It lso has hidden functions useing the tap tempo button and channel buttons as well as gain, channel volume, treble and reverb knobs. It has 4 programmable channels whcih are nice.

Sound Quality : 8
The clean is really nice, especially with some chorus. The twang is okay i guess, its not really suited for my kind of music, whcih is blues, punk, hard rock, classic rock and metal. The blues setting is alright, but gets a muffled sound at high volumes. The crunch is amazing, an excellent sound for punk and classic rock. The recto setting is a nice warm tube-like distortion, very nice. The insane stting is great, but there is a lot of feedback after you get past 5 on the master volume. The flanger and chorus are really nice, and the tremelo, although kinda useless is good. The delay is average.

Reliability : 2
SHIT! I had this goddamn amp for 3 weeks and it broke down, I loved it when i had it, but it just froze up all the sudden!

I sent the amp back for repairs or replacement 4 months ago and havent heard shit all. These people are assholes!

I play a squier strat, and it sound pretty good on this for punk stuff. I also own a boss octaver which fattens up the tone a bit. The damn thing might as well be stolen cause the mother f**kers never sent it back. before this i had a little fender champ 30 that was nice, but i needed more power and versitility. Line 6 loses big marks on customer service and reliablity. I wish it had 2 inputs and a stereo line in and out.

Amp is excellent for all types of sounds. Bought amp last year for my church youth band. Has the best features I have seen in an amp. All the guitar players love to play my amp because of its features and sounds, it can do a million things

Clear good sounds for my church, the sound mixes very well with the rest of the band. It is clean for the old people and wild enough for the youth and does everything in betwee.

It is very good. Had problems with the first amp (volume problems) send it back and got a new one that works great. Except the screews came loose on the top and caused it to buss. So I lowered the rating for that.

I don't like the fact that it doesn't have a line-out. I wise it could be versital with other equipment. Other then that very good and reliable amp. I recomend it for anybody. I have had a blast with it. Would buy one again and hopefully Line 6 will put in a line-out. You would love this amp.

2000 model. 4 channel (+8 with the floorboard)
Channel switching, no loop, headphone jack doubles as D.I. for recording (nice!)
Extremely versatile and very musical.
Tone controls are amazing, mimic the originals but to a much more extreme level.
Hidden features are very nice.
Manual is straight forward and very simple to comprehend.
1 hour with this amp and you have the thing mastered.
For only having a few analog style knobs and limited effects algorythms, you can tweak the $#it out of this thing.
Single 12 inch 50 watt is ballsy for an open backed cab.
I dont quite understand the point of the "ping pong" delay though with only 1 speaker...
Wish it had a line out to drive a separate cab.
Wish it had an effects loop.
Other than that, bar none the solid state BEST practice amp you can get for the money.
As far as keeping up with stage volumes, I doubt it. NOt its intended purpose.

Sound Quality : 9
I'm using a Parker Fly and a custom Abyss 7-string with active EMG-707's.
Suits my style perfect. Progressive metal a la Meshuggah, Spiral Architect, Cynic, Aghora, In Flames, At The Gates and a little NIle & Morbid Angel for good measure.
Noisy-it gives off some wierd sounds/modulation w/ some effects & hi-gain when not playing. Noise gate is so-so, not a Hush unit by far, but effective.
Ranges from crystal clear Fenderesque Champ tones to Brown Bassman to Boogie crunch to Soldano wall of distortion and more. Has a hard time with middle of the road crunch IMHO.
50 watts is a conservative rating. at 1/4 volume plenty loud for bedroom jam. 1/2 volume you'll hurt your ears if you arent careful with the highs & presence.
Remains clear all the way up.
The distortion is one of the best I've ever heard.
Recto rivals Marshall- think Master of Puppets and you got the sound.
Insane is very Soldano SLO, if it sounds this good through an open 12, I cant even imagine the sound thru a closed 4X12.

Reliability : No Opinion
Super lightweight, chip amp, nothing to it.
I can't forsee it crapping out.
Only had it a month though so I cant offer a rating.

Customer Support : 8
Their website is top notch.
The FAQ section is good, but not heavily geared towards the Spider series.

Overall Rating : 9
I've been playing 15+ years. I've owned Digitech, Rocktron, Soldano, Mesa-Boogie, Marshall, ADA, ART, Crate, Fender, etc...etc.
Guitars I've owned Fender, Heartfield, Peavey, Ibanez, Parker, ESP, & Abyss.
This little amp rocks. If it were lost, I'd replace it, but I would probably upgrade to the 2X12 combo or a flextone (or perhaps a vetta)
If it were stolen I would maim the perp.
I love the versatility.
I HATE THE DELAY IN SWITCHING BETWEEN PATCHES. C'MON L6, THIS IS NOT A HARD TWEAK. UP YOUR CHIPS PROCESSING POWER!!
Compared to other run of the mill practice amps. They didn't hold a candle. I'm quickly finding Line 6 is a formidable producer.
Wish it came in a closed back model w/ a line out.
Buy one, I doubt you'll regret it.

I own a 2000 year model and after reading some of these reviews I feel I must respond. This amp is a great practice amp for playing at low volume. You can get a wide array of sounds without the use of any pedals or effects. I have got some of the best sounds I have ever heard out of a non tube amp out of this amp. That's the good news, the bad news is the sound goes to hell as soon as you turn it up. I purchased this amp to play at low volume in my bedroom and for that it is GREAT. Don't think that you will use this amp to jam with your friends or use to play a gig because the sound turns to shit as soon as you turn it up.

Sound Quality : 6
I use a Gibson SG with Gibson Dirty Finger pick-ups a Fender Squire Strat, Schecter C1, Ibanez Artist, and Ibanez Les Paul copy. I play all types of music including jazz, blues and 80's metal. I have been playing about 25 years. This amp is GREAT for what I use it for, I play a wide variety of music and am constantly fiddling with it finding new sounds. I haven't seen any small amps that sound as good as this amp does at low volume. I would give this amp a 8 for Sound except that the lack of volume makes me reduce this to a six.

Reliability : 5
I have had several times that I have turned this amp on and no sound, I just turned it off and turned it back on and it worked. You could not use this amp to gig with unless your drummer's drum kit was bongo drums. (Even then if he played them loud you might not be heard.)

Customer Support : No Opinion

Overall Rating : 5
If this amp were stolen I would not buy it again. I also own several tube amps and the truth is solid state amps just don't sound as good period. If you are thinking about buying this amp as your only amp be sure you turn it up before you buy it, If you are looking for a little solid state amp to fart around with in the bedroom then this could be your baby. If you want a amp to turn up and play with other people live, you better pass this thing up.

I use a charvel custom shop reverse headstock "dinky"(I guess)
w/ a single seymour duncan h.o. double coil.
"clean" is nice. Whenever I play a little Orbison, or beach boys.
"twang" is good for old stones, or dave clark five, ya know.\
The crunch setting, I don't know, it sounds like a cheap marshall
valvestate, or mcd80rcrd(?)(had one, sold it.)
"Blues" setting is pretty o.k. can do some interesting things w/it.
"recto" - pretty much play any hard rock from 1975-2001 and get away with it.
"insane"- Van Halen, judas priest, I love having this much control.
Line 6 has raised the standard by which all other (mid-priced)
amps must adhere to.

Great amp for tweaking with and searching for sound. You want a Marshall sound? Buy a Marshall. The Marshall-sound is to cleany, dull and flat for me, so I chose this spider. For details, see below. The models are combinations of different modeled amps and some modifications were made, why don't all these people read the fucking manual before buying the amp. You can dowload it from www.line6.com. So stop bitchin about it not bein a marshall, it just aint. Listen to it and if you like it, take it with you, you have no valves to replace, if you don't like it buy something else.

Sound Quality : 9
Take your time to tweak with all the knobs. Don't forget the distortion boost, presence, ... options. Twang is very nice for undistorted music, and for surf. Blues is also very good. I almost never use crunch unless for some old sabb-like things. Blues with distortion boost and highs up is very very punk, with highs down something like Muse, Pumpkin's or other heavier rock. Recto is typical '80s metal. Good tweaking with the eq is necessary for your own sound. Don't put distortion on ten, because the thing has more than enough of it, only for very slow metal sounds, you can give it a 7 or 8. Insane is insane. Try all the eqs on ten and the drive on 3,4 or 5, and then back-off your guitar-tone-button a bit. Nice overtone-rich sound. Here and also with the recto-channel, you see the advantages of the digital amp-modeling : at high distortions, the buttons still change your sound, so build your own. If you have "almost" your right sound, you can always put some somp-box or other filter to make it just perfect. (Even MORE tweaking!). I play jazzy-metal and indian/turkish music. I've been playing for 12 year right now. I own the amp for a year right now, I'll stick to line6 for quite a moment. I play a washburn mercury with washburn pickups (I like them more than di marzio or seymour duncan) and a fretless (NO frets) fender stratocaster. The delay and reverb is very nice, the other effects are a bit undefined, at high distortion your distortion can be lost for 50%, just don't use it then.

Reliability : No Opinion
Everyting was okay when I bought it. There are no valves, so nothing can go wrong and nothing did go wrong. The folks at line6 are very nice and they always respond to technical questions you have.

Customer Support : 9
See reliability

Overall Rating : 9
I never give a 10 because nothing is perfect. I compared it with marshalls and mesaboogies that cost the fivefold, and even if i had the money, then I still would not buy these amps. It is understandable that if you have bought a 1500$ Marshall and this cheap thing does it better, you get pissed of and start some nostalgic blabla how everyting was better in the past. I'm glad the models are no perfect copies of old valve-amps, because these amps don't sound perfect too. There's nothing wrong with searching for an even better sound and the engineers at line6 do a very good job at it.

This amp is very versatile. That is one of the primary reasons that I bought it. It models six classic amps, and has built in chorus, tremelo, delay, and reverb. The floorboard has a built in tuner, and a great wah wah.

Sound Quality : 7
I use a Strat, and a Les Paul through it. Both sound great. I prefer the "fender tweed" channel for clean sounds, and the "mesa boogie" channel for leads. The "marshall bluesbreaker" channel is nice too. This amp has very good modeled sounds, and exposes a new player to an interesting palate of sounds, BUT it's still not a classic tube amp!!

Reliability : 7
The amp doesn't project with punch, like a great tube amp, in a live setting. However, for practicing, jamming, and having a variety of sounds at your fingertips; it's great! It hasn't broken down on me. I have had it a year and a half, and jammed loudly with it.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never had to call them.

Overall Rating : 8
As a beginner, it was a great practice and jamming amp. It is portable, versatile, and has good sounds. As I've gotten better, and played more and more amps, I realized that I'm a "fender" man. I've since bought a 65 re-issue Deluxe Reverb for playing out. But I'm keeping the Spider for practice, and a back-up!!

50 watt combo modeling amp, 6 amp models: Clean, Twang, Blues, Crunch, Recto, Insane. 3 band equalizer (bass-mid-treble). 6 digital effects: Flanger, Chorus, Tremolo (which I almost never use), Delay, Tape Echo and Ping Pong. 4 programmable channels and a nice reverb. I'd say it's a fully featured amp. My favorite settings are clean with reverb and chorus, recto with reverb, insane with reverb, and blues with reverb. (I just really like the Line 6 reverb). On this amp, the Ping Pong effect is pretty useless since there is only one speaker. However I'm gonna rate this high because I like the tons of features there are.

Sound Quality : 9
I use a Brian Moore i1f with (of course) a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge, Alnico II Pro in the neck (single coil) and middle (humbucker) and it's plugged in a crybaby wah and then to the amp. I use it for practice. Let's talk about the amp models. The clean channel is very clean with a lot of bottom and high ends, very much like modern clean sounds. I like it a lot. Add a little chorus and put your guitar on the neck pickup, you get the sound Mark Tremonti (Creed) has on Ode and My Own Prison. I can also get a very cool Tool clean sound (Schism intro). For the Twang, now. I don't know very much about tube amps, but this channel sounds so good with the bridge humbucker kicked on for those Foo Fighters chording songs (Hello Dolly). And since there's a lot of bottom end, I suggest to use it with a single coil pickup. Pretty much the same thing with the blues channel. It depends on how I feel, I'll use the blues or twang channel to get nice warm tones for chording songs. The crunch I almost never use. The way I see it, a good crunch tone should have a little more growl. This is just bad. It's like you were playing underwater and were trying to get a dry tone. It's just not happenning. I heard what a Marshall sounded like on the clean channel with a bit a gain and THAT was crunch. This is crunch with no teeth. Recto. Mwahaha. Now that's nice. I think that for the clean, twang and recto channels, the amp is worth it. The way I see it, the recto is an immitation of Marshall distortion. Of course, you don't have the depth and strenght of a Valvestate amp, but this is the channel I use to play just about every alternative or old school rock music I listen to. Tool, Foo Fighters, Grim Skunk, Van Halen (with chorus and a lot of reverb, can you say "Ain't talkin' about love"), Metallica lead, Disturbed, Tea Party, Weezer, Big Wreck, Nickelback. It's a little too digital for playing ACDC or Led Zeppelin though. When I incline the amp so the speaker is pointed directly at my face, the sound is most heavy. The highs blow me away every time. For some of you that have heard a Marshall, the highs are there, searing and fully bodied. Now for the Insane setting. I like to play a lot of Metallica and other heavy stuff. If you're like me and are on a budget get up and get a Line 6 Spider. When I bought this amp, I had a 20 watt Crate amp. Very crappy. And I was looking for something that might sound a little more heavy. So I sat down in front of this immense amp (compared to my former Crate) and turned it to the Insane model. I fell down my chair. Did I say that it was heavy ? I was so blown away that I said immediatly: "I'll take it!" This is the way to go for some unexpensive metallica tones. Note: This amp is not noisy at all. (Except when you're in front of your computer)

Reliability : 9
When I bought it, there was something wrong with the reverb, but I got it repaired and now it's working fine.

Customer Support : 5
I waited two months for the amp to get fixed. 'nuff said.

Overall Rating : 10
'been playing for two years, learning by myself. I'm not a pro but I picked it up pretty fast. I wish I had waited to get the 2x12 combo.

Bottom line is this amp is great for people like me who are on a budget, don't play music for a living, like a lot of different styles of music and like power. I'm gonna put 9 because it doesn't compare to tube amps. I've had it for almost two years and still I am satisfied with it. I'll probably keep this amp even if I get another one. If it was stolen, I'm not sure I'd buy another one though. I'd probably go for a tube amp but money seems to be kind of an issue. I'm gonna rate it a ten because I'm not bored with it, sometimes it still impresses me, I get a lot of good feedback from a lot of people. I understand purists who don't like this kind of amp, but I assure you that it's worth at least to sit down and try it at the store. And at best, buy the damn thing !

Look....i have played alot of combos in my day and the features that it include arent that bad.....the chourus and reverb are a match made in heaven....though i find that the flange can be a little weak...

Sound Quality : 10
I run a Jackson Charvel through it...distortion is great....all the way around...though they could have made the sound a little bit cleaner for little acoustic riffs....i find the sound great, not bad at all. Great distortion and enough acoustic ummmmp for those "acoustic parts". I find it great for playing some Halen and Metallica like music. The only thing i cant find it beating are a marshall stack...i mean it is a freaking stack!!!

The amp has never broken down, i have played about 6 small gigs with it and it has been reliable every time. Good quality is this department.

uuuhhhhhhh...i dont deal with this stuff, but i am sure they are cool
(look at their distortion)

I have been playing for about 6 years and am still kicking it..i own a b.c. rich bich and a jackson with emgs. I love the thing, it gets great sound and ripping distortion. If it silenced the "noise" on the distortion it would be alot better though. By the way...if you own any of the spider amps, dont bother getting any of that POD or extra sound stuff... the sound that you get from the amp itself is great.

I think it has 6 amp models. RJ45 input for floorboard or FB-4 switch. 4 user programable patches. A small selection of effects. 50 watts through a 12 in. speaker. Headphone jack but no lowZ/balanced output for direct input to board or an output for an external cab. Overall, enough features for home use or small gigs.

Sound Quality : 7
I play through a Jackson w/EMG's and Charvel w/DiMarzio & Semour-Duncan. Both are Dinkys. It can satisfy a wide range of music. I have used it live for acoustic gigs too. The cleans are very nice, even at high vols. The distortions are cool at low levels but gets muddy the louder you get and starts to lack definition. I wouldn't play it past 5 live, especially using the insane & rectified distortions. The delays and reverb effects are good but chorus, and flange seem "compromised". They get lost and are not clearly audible. I have no use for the tremolo effect. Loud enough and PERFECT for home but pushing it on stage with a full band is asking too much of it.

Reliability : 9
Very dependable so far. Sometimes the power cord comes unplugged in the back because it doesn't seat in tightly. I check it before I play.

I bought this as a practice amp and other than acoustic gigs, it should stay at home. You can use it live with a full band but you'll need to be smart about it. Keep your volume low and tell the band to not drown you out. It would probably work OK as a rhythm or 2nd guitarist's amp in a small club, using it in a function that your sound wasn't the dominating guitar. It is the BEST amp I've ever purchase for home use. It has all the effects I need, the wattage to jam with the stereo, and is small enough to store easily. My stage rig is a 4X12 5150 cab with racked head. To big for my small home and can't hide it in a closet. The FB-4 footswitch is a must for any live playing. I would invest in the larger floor unit until you move up to at least the 212 version or a Flextone. I'm sure other small and expensive tube amps can sound better but as a practice amp, the features you get are worth the small price. I picked it over a small Fender that was the same price because of the built-in effects. If I had to replace it I'd get a Flextone 212.

See 100+ reviews beneath this one for feature descriptions. Versatility is what Line 6 was shooting for here.

Sound Quality : 4
Play this amp side by side with a real tube amp and you realize what the missing "10%" of the "90% accurate reproduction" represents: SOUL. As with most "analog modeling" technology found in modern synthesizers, you can fool yourself into thinking this sounds acceptably close to the real thing but the fact remains that digital technology is still years away from being able to replicate the organic detail involved in sending an electrical current through a vacuum tube. There's a whole ton of warmth and electricity in a tube amp that just isn't accounted for here.

Reliability : 4
I've had my Flextone for about 3 years now and it's never needed servicing. But I have had the misfortune of using it in a live situation more than once, and one particularly nasty quirk I've been prey to is the amp's tendency to short out and just plain stop working when it's not getting enough electricity from an outlet. Twice I've had to switch to a backup amp on the fly, and that's not cool. Alternately, a real tube amp under these conditions would just diminish in output. Patch storage has been dicey for me, too.

Customer Support : No Opinion

Overall Rating : 5
This amp stays home. As a practice amp it's choice, and the built-in effects mean I can leave my pedals at the jam space. That said, $500 US is still a lot to pay for a practice amp and there's no way I could recommend this amplifier to a serious guitarist with a clear conscience. Prospective buyers: STICK WITH THE REAL THING!!!

More than you could want in an amp... this is after all the reason to use digital modeling. My only caveat is the lack of an effects loop... I personally don't need it, but you should be aware of it before buying one. The delay and modulation parameters aren't immediately accesible, but I find the "one-knob" paradigm produces very musical results... you might well need more flexibility, but in that case you're probably looking for a rack unit anyway...

Sound Quality : 10
Before I say anything else, I should mention that I'm using an Ibanez RG550DX, and its pickups aren't really as hot as I'd like... you should definitely bear in mind what kind of guitar you're using, as that will greatly affect the result you get. Secondly, I play black metal, along with a bit of Gothenburg death influence... in that context, this amp sounds absolutely amazing. I was having a lot of trouble finding an amp that would provide enough gain to appropriately evoke the wrath of the Fallen One, and this amp, unlike anything else I've tried in remotely the same price range, is up to the task... the distortion absolutely rips. It does need a bit of tweaking though... the preset for the Insane model does OK, but you really need to tweak it. The one thing I _really_ like about it is that it enables me to get a violin-like tone, such as that used by At the Gates... though it also excels at a realy cold tone like that used by Emperor on Nightside and Anthems. The Recto model with the distortion boost gets a nice tone, rather fat even if you scoop it, which works well for a more Gothenburg sound... rather in the vein of Opeth. Although I mostly use the Insane channel, Recto also works very well for leads with the neck pickup, and is a bit more forgiving if you use chord voicings involving seconds... the clean channel sounds wonderful with a bit of chorus and reverb. I don't use the other channels much, though the Crunch channel with the gain boost did a good job for Crazy Train. I can't wait to try it out when I get a new Jackson... I really have to give this amp top marks for sound quality, but you should bear in mind the style... I have no idea if it's a good blues amp or whatever... I haven't had any real noise problems... it's actually pretty quiet for the amount of gain I use, though my single coil was noisy... that's expected though...

Reliability : No Opinion
I have to say I don't really know... I haven't had any problems, but I haven't had it for long... the craftsmanship looked nice though; more so than anything else I looked at for anything like the same price. I have a subjective impression of quality engineering, though I hope never to test it in this area as I don't like to abuse equipment. Sure I'd gig without a backup; I can't afford two amps!

Customer Support : No Opinion
I don't know; I haven't had to call them... although I appreciated that the website had sound clips...

Overall Rating : 10
Very nice. I'd certainly replace it if anything happened, after the requisite carnage... I do have to conclude though, that I basically bought it as a practice/studio amp... and in that role it's excellent. I haven't had the chance to try it with a drummer though... if that's important to you any 1x12 isn't really going to do it... check out the 212 at least, if not a half stack. I'm very satisfied with what I use it for, and I heartily recommend it, especially for black or death metal... but I'd say try it with your guitar, and if you have a live drummer you'll probably need something larger. Please feel free to email me if you have any questions.

This thing has a lot of features, its actually I nice concept, its got all the effects youd want for recording, I dont think theyd be useful for playing live though because there is NO footswtich, the amp models are nice the way they are set up on a dial and all, I think the idea and concept of this amp is a lot better than the a,p itself though.

Sound Quality : 6
Heres where I didnt like it, I actually played this thing for about 30 or 45 minutes cause I had heard so much good shit about it, its way too spacey and simulated at mid to high level volumes man, on high bends you hear the "spacey" sounds in the background. I think if this amp was all tube it would help a lot because it can be very glassy on some settings, and very muddy on others. I actually ended up getting a solid state 80 watt marshall combo over this one, and in my opinion it sounds way better, if I want effects, then I use my boss processor, because I can switch between settings and shit, this thing would only be good in a studio in my opinion, it has no footswtich and I just doubt its tonal intergrity at high gigging volumes.

Reliability : No Opinion
have no clue, I guess that would depend on what kind of road it sees after it gets into your hands.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I dunno, hopefully if you're playing $420+ for a combo solid state amp then you wont need customer support.

Overall Rating : 7
The only thing Id use this amp for would be recording either some blues, or some metal, I mean, thats what the damn thing is designed for anyways I suppose, its a modeling amp, which is good in the studio, the models arent dead on though, I wouldnt be convinced, especially the recto man.. shit... haha, you know what Im talking about, how are you gonna get a recto tone out of a damn solid state? I mean, you can get some nice gain on it, and add a little reverb and have anice 80s metal tone, but outside of a recording studio this thing would be worthless, unless you were maybe doing a clinic with it or something. But, I think for somebody whos messin around with different kind of musical styles, or learning, or just smaller in home type stuff this thing would be nice, as far as line 6 goes, if you want tone, go with their higher end tube amps.

Dont have the slightest idea how old the amp is. All I know about it is that some kid brought it in to me to fix it, cuz it was dead and their service center couldnt get it running again. It has 6 different types of amp simulators, all of which dont sound like any specific amp. The tone controls were wimpy, the amp has no balls, service-wise it's a technicians nightmare. Way too much SMT (surface-mount technology). Personally, I was not impressed by anything this amp had to offer, especially since I own a Marshall JCM800 #4210 tube amp and have at my disposal a Fender CyberTwin. Also, I paraded the employees of the music store in to check out the amp, and we were all disappointed. We thought there'd be more to it. Now I know why a good friend hates his bass pod.

Sound Quality : 1
We tried out all sorts of guitars with this amp, ranging from guitar instructors Godins, Les Pauls, Pacificas, Strats, a Tele and even an Ibanez Joe Satriani. The amp is extremely bright, almost tinny, in both clean and dirty channels. It lacked depth. The distortions ranged from a classic crunch to a Crate chainsaw distortion, but we couldn't get a sound we liked. Even the clean sounds blew chunks (the dog). There is no depth of tone. It is just dead-sounding.

Reliability : 1
Lets put it this way. The kid that brought it in to me said that the authorized service center (in the store where he bought the amp) couldn't bring the amp back to life, and all I did was to redo the solder joints in the power supply.
Would I depend on it? I dont even like the sound of it, so I guess that answer is no.
Would I use it on a gig without a backup? I wouldn't even take it out, unless I wanted people to laugh at me and it.
Has the amp broken down? Even the authorized service center couldn't bring it to life after it died.

Customer Support : 1
If the authorized service center couldn't get it going (and that's supposed to be their thing, right?), that says alot for the company. Oh yeah. No, the amp was not fixed under warranty. It was taken to someone (me) who specialized in repairing older amps and is authorized by Fender, Yamaha and SLM (Crate, Ampeg, etc) to bring their amps back to life.

Overall Rating : 1
In all, the 7 guitar instructors and myself have been playing over 100 years, and we haven't seen anything like it, nor do we want to ever again. We own amps ranging from Marshalls to Peaveys to Fenders (and even a Johnson Millenium), and if this is an example of what Line 6 or their parent company puts out, we'll have no part of it. If I had one and it were lost or stolen, I'd use the insurance money to buy me either an older Marshall or a Fender CyberTwin. What do I hate about it? The fact that this is supposed to be a modeling amp and it perfectly models crap. It even stinks like it. Anything I wish it had? A good sound. I wouldnt take this amp if someone gave it to me. Then again, maybe I could sell it online to someone that likes these things.

i use a strat, usually on the last pickup(best way that it screems), this amp suits me perfactly, sounds great clean i have the noisyest pickups in the world and when im not playing it is almost like the amp is off, and distorted it blows people away, all i know is that when i buy this sucker, my mother can yell at me all she wants, i wont hear a thing.

This is a Line 6 112. Features are abundant and it's extremely versatile. Sure some of the sound effects are slightly gay but for the price you won't find anything better. I'm giving it a 9 cause the floorboard is almost manditory for playing on stage.

Sound Quality : 10
I use a '99 BC Rich Warlock (u can pretty well guess the style of music i play by looking at this guitar). The spider and warlock are a match made in heaven. I got fed up with boring guitar styles so I turned to BC Rich. After that I got fed up with boring amps and I turned to Line 6. I'm am greatly pleased with both of 'em. This amp sounds great. It works with nearly any style music. The only real gigging I've done is infront of my high school for assemblies. Honestly this amp has plenty of power for the stuff that I'm playing. The noise gate is awesome and it has great distortion. the best thing is that it's far more bass sounding then any old transistor amp. there's no tin sounding treble to it. i give this amp a 10 for sound.

Reliability : 10
ha. reliability? This thing's middle name was reliability! I've read some other reviews about other people having problems in this area but none have struck my amp. I wouldn't even consider having a back-up.

An incredibly versatile amp with decent tone and effects (delay, echo, tremolo, flange, etc.) although the channels are limited as there are only four and 6 possible amp models......also the footswitch is an extra $75, and it would be better if it came with the amp. Controls are very sensitive, especially drive and volume and need to be tweaked very precisely.

Sound Quality : 10
Great sounding amp. I love the intense distortion which can provide rhythym and lead sounds for the heavier metallica/pantera crowd. The retro distortion provides some good backing rhythym for Ac/Dc and van halenish songs and the crunch is great for classic zeppelin and the who. There are other amp choices like blues, but these stand out. Once again, tweeking must be perfected or it won't sound half as good as it can.

Reliability : 7
This is a fairly reliable amp although sometimes the volume will cut short until the amp is rebooted. Also, sometimes the channel memory has a case of alzheimer's and changes the settings. Usually fairly reliable, but gets points off for what i just said.

Ive been playing guitar for about a year, but sound like someone who has been playing for three or for. If I lost this amp, I would most likely use the money I'd spend on a new amp to go towards a better, perhaps a marshall. I chose this one over others in the same category because of the innumerable effects options.

It comes with plenty of features but I didn't rate it higher because it doesn't come with a footswitch. It's USELESS without one. Anyways, I was able to haggle my way into a free 4 button switch. It's still a little annoying because I don't think it would have been too much harder to make a 6 button switch to add 2 more channels when playing live. The amp models are decent for what it is. As far as power goes, I've seen people say it's not loud enough.... hmmm...I've already used it in a couple of bands I play in and it's been plenty loud enough for practice and small live shows. It's obviously not designed to be an arena amp but for a small, very light and easy to carry combo, it rocks. BTW, it's very very easy to use. I bought it 2 hours before a gig and during soundcheck was able to dial in 4 channels I used live with no problems whatsoever. One major problem is that if you run a cable from the headphone/line out to a board, it shuts off the speaker. This really blows. It doesn't let you use the amp as a monitor and run direct to the board. This needs to be changed.

Sound Quality : 9
Again, I have to rate it based on what it is. It's a 1x12 digital amp with digital amp emulations, effects and power section. It's not by any means intended to be a giant wall of Marshalls or Boogies. That said, it sounds pretty damn good. I use primarily a Les Paul with Lynch Demon p/u's, a Strat with standard p/u's, and a Jackson Rhodes flying V with EMG's. I play anything and everything from rock, to metal, to dance, to country and everything inbetween. Been playing for about 13 years. Between these guitars and the 6 different amp models I can get almost any sounds I want from shimmering clean to an almost exact AC/DC (their tones vary from album to album and I've been able to get almost every one). I'll try and describe the different models.
Clean: Very Fenderish. Add a bit of chorus, delay and reverb and it's a beautiful clean sound. The chorus is incredible.
Twang: Just like what it says. Great for country and if you turn up the distortion just a bit you can get a nice rockabilly sound, almost Brian Setzerish.
Blues: You have to tweak this one a bit to get it to sound good. It's very bassy and muddy as it comes, but if you play with the tone controls and crank the drive way up, i was able to get a nice singing sustaining lead tone with the volume turned up a bit.
Crunch: This one is very versatile. I've been able to get anything from old Rush ala 2112 and La Villa, to southern rock ala Skynrd and 38 special. It's got a nice midrange so it's really good for classic and southern rock. Futz around with the tone controls and the drive and you can also get even more diverse sounds like some of the modern sounds heard today (Green Day, Blink 182, etc....).
Recto: This one's a bit interesting. Using the standard settings it sounds like a heavy scooped mid sound but lacking a certain sustain that one might find in a Boogie. The interesting thing is that if you turn the drive down to below 12 oclock and adjust the tone controls just right, add a bit of delay and reverb, you can get damn close to a classic Hendrix fuzz sound. It works better like this than trying to use it as a Boogie like the manual says it's modeled after.
Insane: HEAVY!!! Balls out metal like Pantera and even heavier. you will need to tweak the tone controls to get a good lead sound but for heavy rhythm it kicks major ass. As much distortion as you could possible want. Nice palm mute chunk.
Overall advice for sounds, you NEED to play with the drive level on every channel as it's extremely versatile. Each amp sound will sound completely different as you run the drive level from very low to very high. Same with the tone controls.
The effects are very good. Flange takes a bit of tweaking but I found it works better at a low setting to get more of that sought after airplane sound. Great chorus. I used the Recto channel with a bit of chorus and the drive turned down to get a great Ratt (round and round) sound. Tremolo is very cool but with the 4 button footswitch you don't have enough control for it to be used in a live setting. The reverb is decent for a basic reverb.

Reliability : No Opinion
I haven't had it for long so I'm not really qualified to say yet.

Customer Support : 1
CRAP!!!!!!!!! I know from time to time they come out with upgrade chips for these amps. I called them when I got it to see if I had the most recent software version and the guy either didn't know anything or just didn't want to help me. I still don't know if I have the most up to date software on it.
Problem two. I emailed them about the issue of the speaker turning off when you use the line out and they did not write me back. I emailed them again in case it got dropped through the cracks and still no reply. They have a canned answer for this issue on their website but I'm a computer and network engineer and am sure that you can modify it to work the way i need it to. I asked about possible mods to make this work and they ignored my email. Even a "No, it can't be done" would have sufficed. Not replying at all was completely unacceptable. WORTHLESS CUSTOMER SUPPORT. I hope the amp never breaks or I think I'll be screwed!!!!!

Overall Rating : 9
Ive been playing about 13 years. I have way too much gear to list here ranging from small combos to several full rack systems with Mosvalve and Marshall rack amps to ADA and Sansamp PSA1 preamps and a whole ton of other crap I can't even remember. I got this because I got tired of lugging around racks and cabinets and pedals and crap to small gigs. The combination of amp tones and effects onboard make it a great and versatile standalone amp for gigs and practices. You MUST get at least the 4 channel footswitch though. The other one is WAY WAY overpriced IMHO. Oh, some people have complained about the cable for the footswitch...not sure why. It's a standard network cable and very easy to replace. I have tons of these lying around my house and office. Not like say a digitech gsp21 footcontroller cable which if lost or broken leaves you screwed!!!! I wish they would listen to their customers and include the 4 channel pedal with the amp...(those greedy bastards...hehe) Anyways, if lost or stolen I would replace it based on how portable it is and the sound quality for the price.
If anyone has any questions or tips on sounds, etc....feel free to email me.

Single 12 combo with four preset buttons. Digital modeling amplifier with eight(I think) different amp models. It does include a headphone jack although I wish it had a speaker sim balanced XLR out. I believe it is 50 watts RMS. The amp seems underpowered. I played through this amp last weekend (house amp at a church we performed at) and set beside a mid-70's fender deluxe and the Line 6 Spider was lost in the mix. I kept turning it up but it never cut through. We had it miked but we keep guitars down in the mix and use the amps as monitors. I own.

Sound Quality : 6
I used a Fender American Standard strat and a Washburn P3 (Duncan 59's). We play clean and moderately distorted music. The spider seems better suited for heavier Recto tones. It does not do the Vox, Fender Deluxe, Matchless range of sounds very well at all. It is not very touch sensitive or responsive to rolling off the volume control. It has a variety of sounds available that can get you in the zip code of the sound it is trying to model, but not close enough that anyone would mistake the sound as a Vox AC30, for example. I own a Yamaha DG 80 (great sounding amp for the Matchless, Vox, fender sound. touch responsive like a tube amp) and a Johnson J-Station (worth the $149 just for the bass models alone). and would prefer to use those over the Spider. The Spider seems more like a practice amp to me. If I had $350 to spend on a amp, I would get the 2nd generation Peavey Transtube Bandit and a good chorus and delay pedal. I also think I might look for a used Tech 21 Trademark 60. Overall, the sounds of the Spider are OK at practice volumes, but not very usable in a performamce setting.

Reliability : No Opinion
Can't really speak to this as I don't own the amp.

Customer Support : 1
Have not dealt with the company. I longtime friend of my owns a rep agency for my area and his company was the Line 6 agent when it was introduced. He worked hard to get distibution in virtually all the music stores in a four state area. about the time Line 6 was getting ready to introduce the POD, they cancelled are their rep agreements throughout the country and refused to pay the reps for all the orders they had written. They then went out and hired company reps. Not a very ethical thing to do. Needles to say, my opinion of Line 6 is not very high.

Overall Rating : 5
I have been playing for over 25 years and play both guitar and bass. I have owned Marshall, Hiwatt, Boogie, Peavey and Sodano amps. Right now, my Yamaha DG 80 gives me the best combination of sounds features and prtability. The Line 6 Spider is a decent amp for practice, but if you use it in a performance setting you will want something else soon. Given the same amount of money, I would look at the Yamaha DG-Series, the Tech 21 Trademark 60, the new Peavey Transtube Bandit, used Peavey Classic Series, and if you could find it, a 70's Fender Deluxe.

Sound Quality : 7
clean-good crisp...distorts at high volumes or with a violent stevie ray type pick attack, which some people dont like but i happen to like it its my blues tone and "call of ktulu" type clean stuff

twang-crap too muddy to be clean and too weak to be distored i never use it

blues-ok but still on the muddy side i dont really use it.

crunch-still kinda muddy but back off thge bass and a little off the mids and have the gain at about 2 o'clock and its good punk distortion

recto-i like it its my 80's metal distortion good and big not so powerful to be modern high gain....whoever thinks this is a boogie must have either a. never played a boogie or b. been standing right in front of a cranked one too long. lol

insane-nice and tight low end but if u hold a slightly palm muted e5 it burbles and makes everything rattle. needs a little more treble attack but its good for metallica and megadeth. i used my neck p/u back off the tone dial in some chorus for some syrupy leads

fx-could be more verstile/ but ok not tip top but average or a bit above. delays are nice but i found that the actual delay is a fraction slower than the tap tempo u use. overall good for the price and for a digital amp

Reliability : 8
has areally faint crackling in the backround at high volumes. ive noticed in some reviews some people dont have this. i think its just a luck of the draw and some of them might have minor wiring defects or some electronic thing like that. but feels sturdy, never dropped it and i dont think it would be too messed up if i did

ive been playing for about 4 years. i play judas priest iron maiden pre black album metallica and megadeth with a little yngwie and michael angelo thrown in...i currently own a san dimas charvel with an sh4 and original floyd, a jackson sl1 and a les paul custom in antique white ( i love that guitar). i use a marshall jcm2000 tsl60 head with a slant 412 marshall with greenbacks. well the marshall kicks the crap outa the line6 but what can i say its a marshall all-tube half stack. this amp is good for hauling around for mildly quiet sessions with friends and is pretty good for intermediate or beginners. id buy it again if it were stolen or lost or i might look at the flextones(which btw are almost double the cost of this).

This amp was purchased strictly as a living room amp, (I have stage equipment that I wouldn't DARE fire up in my living room!lol) so I really didnt need anything with more power then 50 watts. I was attracted to the Spider because of the sounds I could generate in the store (YES, I knew enough ahed of time to tweek the amp to really hear the different tones). I like the faxct that you can pretty much dial in & program the effects without all the muccky-muck of peddles. The RECTO selection has been the mainstay so far & in my memory I have both a normal & lead setting. I also dialed in a more smooth, tube sound with CRUNCH, & a slightly bright CLEAN. The delay can be tricky to set with the TAP, but I eventually found the sound I wanted. The FLANGE is a bit on the lame side, but I only use it at the lowest setting to get an older "brown sound".

Sound Quality : 6
My #1 guitar is a PRS ce22ltd, and a Strat. Of corse you can hear the diference blindfolded between the two guitars. The PRS sounds GREAT, while the Start sounds kinda weak, even though I have a Hotrail in the bridge.
For me, the only complaint I have is that at higher volumes the sound starts to mesh way too much & you loose some deffinition in your notes. I would NEVER use this in a band situation, but in my kliving room it does fine.
The distortion is more like what you would get by overdriving the amps it's modeling, and thats pretty cool. It can get a but out of hand though, & I would NEVER test one at the store without tweeking the dials first, the presets (as in most effects with presets) suck.

So far, so good! I have NOT gotten any of that "crackle" that so many people claim to have.

I've been playing 23 years & have gone through a TON of guitars & amps. If this one was ever stolen, or crapped out, I MAY replace it. I would propbibly go back to Peavey bandits though. In fact, I'm sort of on the fence about trading this in for a Peavey 112 Transtube Bandit.

Uhh this amp has alot of "features" but not anything thing that sounds good. Clean- Distorts at high volumes and sounds like a digital computer shit, Twang- It sounds like exactly liek clean and same thing with that, Blues- man i know blues has some bass in the settings but come on it this is going to far it sounds like shit, Crunch- People say sounds like Green day and stuff but i dont even think it sounds like that it sounds horrible worse "distortion", Rectro- Disortion that useless..barely distorted, Insane- Rectro with a tiny bit more distortion but still sounds horrible and not even distorted enough.

Sound Quality : 1
This sound blows..Yeh it has built in effects..There all sooo horrible though..chorus and flanger are the worst i ever herd b4.. and plus u have no control over them..oh yeh feedbacks blows out the ass but im not gonnna really blame the amp because my guitar blows and has alot feedback on every amp..Oh yeh this whole amp is digital and blows so bad...the distortion sounds like fake computer crap..and when u turn this amp up loud...its soooo horribble sounding..so bassy and gay..I gigged with it once and it was a nitemare...bass sounds plus it wasnt even loud enough but to put on top of that it sounded like fukin shit...oh yeh i was jamming with my band the other day and my rythm guitarist had a 15 watt peavy peice of shit and i had this and i turned myine6 up 8 and he turned his little peice of shit up to 1 and half and he blew my amp away he was so much louded than mine and it even sounded better than my digital gay ass line 6.

IT never broke...But id never buy it again..it sux horribly..

Customer support blows lol..Biggest dumbasses working at line 6 with digital gay ass amps that sound not even close a tube amp.

Ive been playin for 4 years now and im defintly gonna sell this amp and get like a good crate with 2 12inch speakers that atually plays over drums and that doesnt sound like robotic computer peice of shit ready to blow up..I wouldnt buy this amp if u wanna play over drummers or even guitarists with 15 watt amps lol.

After years of lugging heavy tube combos, forget stacks, along with various stomp boxes and connections. I tried this little baby out and found it to meet most my needs without breaking my back or wallet. The floorboard is a definite must with this unit. I have 12 channels which I can go to seamlessly and tweaking on the fly is good. I use this amp almost exclusively and generally mic it. I rarely go above three on volume. It also has "hidden" extras like a noise gate and such. I don't like the line out (headphone jack which can be used as a direct line) because the speaker is disconnected. The line out is stereo even on the 112 model which is a good thing. I use all the features but the addition of the wah pedal with the floorboard really helps to tweak tones on the higher gain models. As far as digital goes....get with the program. I don't see any manually typed letters going by snail mail to be manually posted here. Technology is a good thing especially when it affords a great amount of flexibility in a small package.

Sound Quality : 7
I use an american tele and les paul classic and the versatility of the amp is a real plus here. My styles are varied from country to contemporary to hard edge and again the amp's versatility is a plus. The amp does tend to make these star wars type sounds when turning it on and coming off the tuner mode with the floorboard. Been meaning to talk to the manufacturer about this. The clean channels are fairly good and when overdriven can render a good fender sound. Even the twang if tweaked really cuts through the mix. I use the blues and crunch quite a bit and they require little tweeking to get the most of of these settings. The distortion in the recto is good if adequately tweeked and again I use the wah in a stationary position to contour the tone even more. I rarely use the insane because I do little that is called for that much distortion. Note here that copying a sound from one channel to the next is a one touch deal and after it is copyed you can add some drive, more distortion, delay or whatever for leads while keeping you same basic tone with just a switch via the floorboard. I would like a little more flexibility with the tremelo and flange but what the hey.

Reliability : 10
So far dependable and predictable save the aforementioned star wars sound. No tube degradation to worry about here.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Will let you know when I use them. One year warranty.

I have been playing for 36 years and would replace this unit if stolen. I like the lightwieght small package and flexibility. The flexibility of this unit cannot be stressed enough. I consider this a excellent value for the money. It should be noted this amp responds great to varied picking techniques which is a definite plus.

This amp has a variety of very decent features. Interpret "very decent" how you may. It'll definately save you a lot of money in stomp boxes, and it sounds better than most multi-effect processors.

Sound Quality : 6
The clean setting on this amp is good, so are the blues and crunch settings. Blues and crucnch don't seem like the best disciption to me, they sound similar, and take some tweaking to get dailed in. The blues isn't all that bluesy, and the crunch doesn't really crunch, but you can get a lot of David Gilmour esque sounds out of them. Recto and Insane are ridiculous, they sound bad. The insane setting isn't all that insane, more hard rockish. Even with lots of drive, high volume, and a humbucker equiped guitar, it's difficult to get any chuga-chug-chug, i.e. Pantera.

Reliability : 10
no problems at all

Good first amp, or "bedroom" amp. Serious players will want the real deal: Marshall, Mesa, Orange, Vox, Hiwatt, the list goes on and on. Still, this is one of the better digital processing amps I've heard. If I was buying my first amp I'd look hard at the spider.

doesn't sound good. this amp tries to re-create tube tones but comes across just sounding like your basic digital peice of crap. I use a Les Paul custom and have gotten good tones out of it with many different amps, but not this one. Horrible clean. really digital sounding distortion.

here's a tip: If you want to get a particular amp sound, don't by some digital peice of crap that tries to model it. just fork out the extra bucks and buy the real thing. This whole new wave of digital amps have generic and fake tones, and have nothing on a good tube amp. (Marshall, Carvin, etc)

The Line 6 Spider 112 Combo Amp comes with lots of quality features. With 7 different effects to choose from and 6 different amp models to play with, this is definately worth buying if you don't need a whole army of wattage behind you. Quality is very good, and won't dissapoint you (if you know what a good sounding amp should sound like). It includes:

Flanger-rated @ a 7

Chorus-rated @ an 8

Tremelo-rated @ an 8.5

Delay-rated @ an 8

Tape Echo-rated @ an 8

and the Ping Pong-rated at an 8.7

Sound Quality : 9
With the 6 different amp models, this Spider is the master of molding. With 50 watts of quality power behind it, only the Spider 212 could do any better.

Clean- excellent, with auto delay (unless turned off). With the reverb on level 2 or 3, it sounds even beter.

Twang- Surfs up dude!!! The twang option is incredible, but it's hard to use for most playing. Has a nice sharp tone, and a light flange or chorus effect.

Blues- nice light distortion, with a deep tone to it. Can be made heavy, but I recommend you keep the drive under 3/4 with this setting.

Crunch- Since when do I sound like Green Day? This option has styles of Green Day and probably even Everclear. Can range from high end dist. to a semi-low end shocker.

Recto- If you like Mesa Boogie's, and could never afford one, then this is your setting!!! The Recto resembles the Mesa Rectifier. Nice low sounding distortion for heavy metal sounding like P.O.D., Project 86, or even Limp Bizkit.

Insane- Definately!!! Not too scratchy distortion gives you 100% pure heavy metal distortion. This setting will blow the competition away!

Reliability : 9
The Spider 112 combo is a winner in all catagories, especially reliability. I personally have not had any sort of technical difficulty since I bought this amp last February! My other amp ditched me after 6. Good, strong frame to keep it in one piece, and approx. 44 lbs.

Customer Support : 10
I did not directly deal with Line 6, but the people I did talk to knew what they were talking about, and in the $400 (US) price range, this is the king of its class.

Overall Rating : 8
Ty overall rating is true. I've tried all other amps in it's class, and they can't handle the high-volume clean or distortion. This amp is a very good one. It beats all Crates, Fenders-like Princton and under (even some of the Deluxe series!), Marshalls (Triple Lead and under-comparable to the DSL401 40 watt tube amp). If you simply wanted higher power, though, then go with the 212 combo, if not, get even better sound quality with the 210 combo.

This amp started production around 1998. There are six different amplifier sounds. Fender clean, Fender Twang, Fender Blues, Marshall Crunch, Mesa/Boogie Recto and Mesa/Boogie Insaine. The effects include Flange, Chorus, Tremolo, Three Delays, Reverb and Wah (if you have the pedel board). This is a totally digital amplifier. I wish it had a decent line out. You can use the headphone out as a line out, but it is too hot of a signal to be useful, and the speaker cuts out (obviously). I have been giging with this amp for about one year.

Sound Quality : 6
Well, I am using an Ibanez RG 550 and a Yamaha Pacifica. This amp is very versatile, you can get anything from clean to metal out of it (sort of). At low levels this amp sounds pretty good. Of course it doesn't sound exactly like a tube amp, there are no tubes in it. But its a reasonable representation of the amps it is supposed to emulate. Turn it up and its a different story. The last gig I played, the woofer was totally failing. The low end tight crunch sounded more like a fart than anything else. I mic this amp and run it through a 15" monitor, so its workable most of the time. This is a practice amp, not recommended for giging. The best distortion I've been able to come up with is using the blues channel and adding gain and a bit of reverb. The insane channel is great for playing along to Metallica (napster version of course) but thats about it. The clean channel is WAY to harsh and trebely at high volumes. I'm planning on retiring this to a practice amp, and getting something else for performing with.

Reliability : 8
No problems at all. I drag this thing around Canada in the -35 degree weather and its been fine so far.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I registered the amp on their website. No repairs needed.I think the warranty is one year

Overall Rating : 7
Well, I've been playing for about 15 years, and have owned various amps, mostly marshalls and fenders. If this were stolen I wouldn't replace it. I would probably put the money into a decent tube amp. I like the versatility and ease of use of this unit. It just isn't the same as a 'living' tube amplifier. Not that you can expect it to replace 6 amplifiers for such a cheap price. A great practice amp, nothing more. If you are a tube freak, stay away from all digital amplifiers (you'll be disappointed).

made in 1999 , has all the options you could really want , the only gripe i have with the features is that this line 6 here is the one that u can only save 4 presets with. thats ok, dont use many anyways.
its 50 watt, its got enough power for around the house, or for a small gig. good thing is you get a headphone jack, so you can play at night a lot, like i do. its not a solid state amp, its not a tube amp, its a tube modeling amp! get that straight.
has many effects, again, this is a digital tube modeling amp, so your gonna have choices and lots of em.

Sound Quality : 8
The guitars i use through this are a prs custom 22, an ibanez 7 string, and a peavey wolfgang. the sounds are fairly nice. ill list the good things first. the good things about this amp is, its loud when you need it, very quiet when you wanna play at night, sounds equal at all noise levels. has a lot of options, you can switch around from sparkling clean to a decent distortion. you got a lot of hidden features to improve whatever you want such as drive/boost, presence, distortion, volume, etc. the cleans are fairly good. but keep in mind, the sounds you get from this is digital, very digital.
harmonic squeals, dive bombs, any trick you can do, will come out great with this. i really like the delays' and reverb on here.
the distortion isnt brutal, it gets squishy if you do too much. so in that case, use a metalzone pedal like i do. make sure to set it really well, or it'll sound boxy and you'll get pissed easily.
a lot of people complain about this amp, but those are the people that are in the store for ten minutes with this. you gotta take the time and evalute this amp, try different settings. at one time i loved this amp, at one time i hated this amp. i came back around after using my soldano for a few months. and i enjoy this amp, its great to just have around and screw with. your not going to get that tube sound out of this, but, i really dont care. gotta be different right? i already have a tube amp, and half the time i dont care to crank it up like you gotta with them all the time.
i have an extreme amount of hours on this, and its help up quite fine.
im the type that takes extremely good care of my equipment, so i didnt expect to have a problem.
my music style is a bit different than what' i'd like to get out of this amp, and basically, its the only sound you cant get out of it, and thats down right nasty heavy death metal. your just not gonna get that. anything else, i dont see where you'd have a problem.
a gripe i have sometimes is that it feels processed, or you can say digital, but hey, thats what this amp is about. i sometimes find it has a closed type sound to it. my recommendation for this would be to use a sonic maximizer, pick one up for around 90 bucks or so, and that'll help it dramatically.
this is the type of amp you like to have around for just fun , practice, or a backup for a small gig. no one is going to lug around tube amps that weigh out the ass now are they? didnt think so.
it took me a lot of time to come back around and like this amp.
i dont play it everyday, maybe a few times a week, and thats just perfect because i dont get annoyed at it, and i get to experience other sounds and feel comfortable to come back to this line 6.

Reliability : 9
no problem with reliability, quite well built.
you gotta watch the presets they can get a bit funky at times going on and off if you dont watch yourself. but everything else is fine

Customer Support : 10
great bunch of guys, i talk to them on a regular basis, have some friends there. and even before i knew anyone there, excellent. always willing to hear from you and they enjoy your comments.

Overall Rating : 8
i've been playing about 11 years now, i own a soldano atomic 16, and have a few other vintage amps. my next piece of gear will be a mesa triple rectifier, when i acquire more room. i compared this with other amps in its category, they each hold their own, but the line 6 is just a little bit above them in my opinion.
the market on these are really good right now, i'd snag up one if i didnt have this. the thing i love about it, is that you can do so many sounds, the thing i hate bout it is that some of the sounds are unusable to me.
all in all, if you got the time check one out. i'd recommend this amp to people that were just practicing around the house, or recording in a studio, or something to show off to your friends. you definetely can make it sound good, take the time to find the adjustments and you'll be on your way. most people will be pleased with this amp as long as your not out for death metal or an extremely bluesy type thing.

Great amp! Its digital, but it sounds a whole lot better than my peavey solid state. Decent Effects. For a moderate price.

Sound Quality : 8
I use mine with a Dean Custom Budwiser Guitar (Like the electric signs in bars except real), and an Ibanez GRX20z. Both equiped with humbuckers.

CLEAN -
The clean channel is just amazing! You can use a touch of reverb and chorus to warm it up, seeing as how it is digital and sounds pretty digital.

TWANG-
I have no real use for this setting because it sounds like electric country music.

BLUES-
Dissapointing. Too bassy, very little articulation

CRUNCH-
Slightly better than blues. Sounds really good with a low distortion level

RECTO-
Nice tone. Very sutable (spelling?) for rock or pop.

INSANE-
Very similar to "recto", but get this. It has treble and articlulation. A definate choice for Papa Roach-esq nu-metal. If you keep the treble below 7 it is also great for TOOL.

EFFECTS-
They are pretty good, too bad you can only use one at a time though.

Tremelo-
Decent, but useless effect.

Chorus-
Great. You can't mess up a chorus!

Flanger-
It's pretty good.

Delay(s)-
I don't like delay, but it has tap tempo and you can control the volume of the repeat.

Overall the effects are pretty good. Not very much control over them though.
