Great live and recording. Have not tried the xlr out or anything. Just miked and it sounds great. I couldn't care less about the presets as I basically have 4 amps at my disposal as opposed to the one I had in a Savage Macht 12. Now I can have the sound of a Savage with 3 others on tap. I love it.

Sound Quality : 10
It is what it is and I think it does very well, especially at loud volume.

Reliability : No Opinion
N/A but I bought a 3 yr warranty with decent terms for $50

This amp has a lot of features as already stated before. Big Minus is a missing midi jack so my only chance to control this amp is with Line 6 gear.

To my knowldege and to my ears this is not an all tube amp. The power amp is a tube amp but the pre amp is no tubes at all. The so called mentioned pre amp tubes in the reviews before are just regular driver tubes for the power amp got nothing to do with the pre amp section in my oppinion.

Sound Quality : 7
I think for playing modeller sounds live the combination with a real tube power amp and guitar speaker is the best of both world.

Problem with the Spider valve is that the preamp is Pod 2.0. So kinda cheap and old solution by Line 6. The pre amp sounds good but not great. Especially the effects section (chorus!) ain`t too satisfying but does the purpose.

I play this amp using the power amp in insert in combination with a Pod X3. Now that is wehere the magic to this amp starts. The Pod X3 as a preamp gives that amp much gretaer tones than the built in pre amp. So this amp is great to use with any good modeller.

My rating refers to the amp stand alone but it sounds much better with a good modeller (in combination with my X3 it is a 9). It is good for rock stuff and blues rock. I don`t like the high gain sounds too much but they are good but not really great. But I doubt real metal heads will be satisfied for too long with it. And I don`t know for blues. I guess Blues-Rock to Rock is the best purpose for this amp stand alone.

The sound is really loud and 40W is plenty enough for any rehersal room and regular clubs.

Reliability : No Opinion
I have it for 6 months now and had no problems at all. It smells like a little electricity burn everytime you run the tubes but that is normal (checked that in the Line 6 Forum with other users).

Didn`t use it yet so I can`t give any ratings.

It is a great amp compared to its price value. In combination with Pod X3 and a FBV SHortboard the magic begins. Play the X3 at home. Play X3 and Spider Valve at gigs and rhersals. For quick jam set ups and as a back up to the X3 use the SPider Valve stand alone. This way you get it all in any situation.

But my rating refers to the Spider Valve STand Alone. I didn`t get a chance to listen to an Atomivc Reactor but so fare the Spider Valve is the best solution for modelling and Live that I have heard. Ways better powerfull and organic than any PA SPeaker or keyboard amp. If you like to have a real guitar tone and feel but want to stick to modelling that is the way to go.

I play for 20 xears now and I`m into Rock-Heavy. If stolen yes I don`t see any alternative right now I`d buy it again. Just thinking of getting another one to play stereo and use the dual amp feature of the X3 for live.

By the way the 112 version sounded better to my ears than the 212. It is a question of taste of course but if you are interessted in that amp play both versions and judge for yourself. It sure is a great amp.

lots of great features in this amp...
good delay effects, esp the tape delay,
good other effects like tremolo, and you can choose the tempo of the effects by tapping the button at the tempo, or tapping your footswitch (which i would recommend, although the price is pretty hefty at ??80) the footswitch gives you a wah pedal, volume pedal, and access to 4 different channels, which can all be at different volumes, so theres no need to stop and change your presets.
you can also equalise each different channel differently, which helps when switching from rythm to a lead channel

i manly play rock on this amp (biffy clyro, foo fighters styles)

it handles it EXTREMLY well, clean is awesome sounding, the crunh gives a really nice growl to it, but the best thing about this amp is the insane setting.

dont get me wrong, i do not like very heavy music, but for soloing, this setting is unbelivable. add a touch of normal delay to your sound and your off in another world.

i have heard of a lot of line 6 amps sounding very digital, the tubes in the amp destroy that pre notion. there are 2 pre amp tubes and 2 main ones.

Sound Quality : 9
i am using a tele custom and a firebird through this amp.
i WAS using a normal tele, but through the insane and metal channels, the pickups became very microphonic, so i returned it.

my firebird goes through this like a beast, mini humbuckers do very well through it. the tele customs humbuckers go well through it as well. i would be unsure about putting single coils through, as my old tele 62' nearly blew my ears out with its feadback.

not a noisy amp at all, APART from starting up. my amp began popping, so i took it back to the shop, apparently one of the pre amp tubes had gone but more on that later.

the sound quality over all is amazing, best amp i have ever played through.

Reliability : 3
my amp is currently being repaired by line 6, (thankfully it has a warrenty)

one of the pre amp tubes has gone and it began to make an ear splitting popping noise , unbeliavlably...when i was playing a gig.

i cannot wait to get this amp back ...fixed hopefully,,,its such a good amp i would pay to have it work reliability, however it is not very reliable...which explains the 3...

2 years playing

i would buy it again if it were lost or stolen, no doubt

good price, great sound, can be played VERY loud for larger gigs...(40 watts of valves :D )

the pedal i bought with it has an on board tuner which is great, the wah pedal i thought would be rubbish isnt that bad at all!

has a hidden noise gate which is great for me ( having it at loud gigs is great)

be careful when playing single coils through it, i dont have a guitar with single coils to try it with...but i played in a sound proof booth with my firebird to make sure it didnt have the same problem, i got the amp to 3/4 and it could have gone louder if the gain and channel volume had went up.

after that i stopped and the volume was still up on the amp, but i had stopped playing, and it was silence, no hiss at all, and around 20 accoustic guitars on the wall had the vibrations going through there strings and were singing its approval.

buy it.

tons, I play at my church every thing from squeaky clean to iron maiden dirt, this amp can do it all. its more than just a metal amp but i do have a wall of doom setting on mine, i am totally happy, this is my 4th line6, by far this is my fave . 36 channels 400 presets its awesome

Sound Quality : 10
i have a ibanez 570 2 buckers and signal, and a ibanez series with a hummy and a signal. this is exactly the amp i have been searching for i would say watt for watt its the best out there. the distortion is well, can you say WALL OF DOOM hows that for brutal and the clean can go from squeaky, to a nice break up,to nasty ,but you must get the short board to fully appreciate this amp. Yes Joe Vai & Malsteen are now obtainable

Reliability : 10
like i stated before i have had 3 other line6 amps a flextone ,spider2 30 watt & a spider3 i have never had a problem with mine, but i bought my son a spider3 the same time i got mine he had it over a year and it blew the power supply to the speaker i contacted line6 they said it would cost more to ship back and forth than the amp cost, so they sent me a check , can you say extended warranty,no problem with my spidy valve in 4 months

It is a all tube amp by line 6, the pre amp modeler is driven by pre amp tubes 2x 12AX7 and the power amp got 2 6L6 tubes. it has a lot of amp models to choose, for any style of music from pop music to death metal.

Its has a lot of features;pre amp out,power amp in,speaker output,etc.
I wished it had a Power level but well, it is 40 watts it can sound loud enough to jam with a band or can be used for jamming at home at somewhat low volumes.(not too low or it sounds less good)

I bought it to be able to jamm at home with it and to be able to jamm with my band plugging it on a 4x12 randall cab.I play Metalcore/death core. The metal and insane models just suit fine my needs.

Sound Quality : 10
First,I'm using it with a washburn wg600 with livewire metal pickups.

I've tried it the first time at the shop with a LTD with emgs and I was amazed by its sounds, great sounding distortion, very good sound I was impressed, this is a lot different than my spider II I have at home, the spider valve is completely different, well it doesn't sound crappy.

Then I thought about buying the head, but I thought about it and came back the next day with my guitar to try it a second time, I tried each of the metal and insane models, they all sounded great but i prefered the metal models because livewire metal pickups are too high output to be use with insane models. The effects sound very good, I liked the delays and the reverb, the chorus flange sounds good too.

So after this second try out, i decided to buy it. And I did not regret it, I was owning a randall head(hybrid) I liked it but I really wanted something all tube, but my issue was to be able to jamm in an appartment with it,the spider valve 112 was just what i needed, and for the sounds, I needed good sounding distortion(s) and the spider valve metal distortions sounds great, a lot better than my randall I find a little too much scooped mids, with the spider valve you have better choices of distortions for what you need.

can't tell too, I never had to deal with them,

Overall Rating : 10
I own a Podxt which is my most recent line6 aquisition before the spider valve and i'm very happy of it, sounds great for recording on computer and play with headphones with a great sound. I had a spider II 112, which i'm happy to be selling back with my randall head to get my spider valve, opposed to the spider valve, the spider II sounds heavily digital and sounds muddy at high volumes, the definition of the sound is bad, I prefered the randall but the randall was too much mid scooped, and I really wanted a better tube sound, because i'm tired of solid state harsh sounds, the randall was not too bad for that but the spider valve is just too much better compared to it.

I was intending to buy a new tube amp so I looked many cheap tube amp manufacturers bugera, axl, b-52. The axl didn't just convinced me enough(AT-40 model),most stores carrying B-52 amps just don't ship to quebec or canada, bugera seemed very good but the vendor at my local shop told me it was not reliable and the amps broke at the namm show and was poor quality built,I believe its true, when you know its a company distributed by behringer! I didn't wanted to buy a randall again because I needed something to jamm at home, so a not too loud amp and not too much mid scooped. So then I tried the spider valve and I fell in love with it!

Using a Fender Strat HSS, Like playing Pink Floyd/Dave Gilmour...amp can be very loud or can be used just for bedroom use, very versitile sounds but all sound very digital except the vox sound....good clean sounds and brilliant distortion

Reliability : 3
Absolute crap.....started making poping noises after 2 hours playing, volume switch hangs and so does the rest of the knobs.....not a happy bunny as you can tell

Customer Support : No Opinion
taken back under warranty.............going to re think as have been offered an different make....fancy a Fender Blues Deluxe reissue and just buy some effects pedals

Overall Rating : 5
Sorry to see the amp go....but honeymoon period is over.....nice amp but novety has fizzled out, for home use and cover band use buy one as I am sure my problem cant be a worldwide problem....but if you want real valve amp tone think again i tried the amp bypassing the digital effects and the Chinese valves really showed their true colours....CRAP...plug your axe into a specimen jar you will get a warmer tone

This amp has many features, but what the heck should you care if they are all rubbish?

Sound Quality : 1
The sound is decent. It's better than the normal Spiders, bur no way near as good as a real tube amp. This amp has a digital preamp that runs into a tube power amp (3 x 6L6 with 2 x 12 AT 7 driving tubes). The fake digital sound of the modeler is still there, but less noticeable than usual. The more you turn up the amp, the more the power tubes take over and diminish the differences between different digital presets. So where is the sense in such an amp? If you want a tube sound, get a real tube amp. This thing sounds fine in your living room, but not so fine on a real stage or rehearsal room (get lost in the mix syndrom). I gave it back a weak later and got myself a Hotrod Deluxe, a night - and - day difference!!!

Reliability : 1
This amp is very unreliable, as most Line6 stuff. It got broken after a week whil it was transported to a club for gigging. I would never use this thing in a real live scenario...

Customer Support : 1
Customer support sucks. It took them ages to deliver a replacement.

Overall Rating : 3
I play since 17 years. This Spider Valve got me interested in trying a,something new, but boy was I disapointed. Worst experience with guitar amps so far.

I just bought this amp in Oct. It is a 12 channel amp with built in effects, etc etc.. With my last amp I used a pedal board with about 4 pedals. In any event the shortboard is a far better easier concept because of the simplicity in a live band situation, and the cool built in tuner. It is alot easier to load up after a gig when you can see, and you only have a few things to grab, instead of alot of expensive cables lying everywhere.

As for volume this amp is extremely loud. Much louder than I thought it would be anyways. I can only picture how good it would sound through a cabinet. The power section opens up nicely at band volume.

Sound Quality : 9
As for sound quality, I was expecting that it would be kind of cool but I have never thought the modelling felt that good. It sounds good recorded in the studio and it is quick.

This amp defied me completely. It has a great sound that only gets better. You have to know what you want of course. The EQ doesn't get responsive until it is loud. The power section definately adds sustain and compression at higher volumes. The models are all cool if you dial them in right. The Amber Blues (jtm 45/bassman) is very 70's sounding with alot of power tubey low end flab. The Crunch Blue channel sounds very much like a Marshall. Old Marshalls don't really feel that 'easy' to play through, and it gets that point across. The crunch blue is the best channel if you want to achieve the old Van Halen sound of the 70's. The blue metal is my favorite of the metal channels. You can use the mid to shape it how you like it, and even dial off the gain and crank it if you want that higher gain tighter low end Marshally sound with power tube compression. The other one is like a Duel Rec. I like it, but I like Marshalls better for distorted tones. It sounds very much like the Duel Rec with alot of low end and high end sizzle. All of these models come to life with master volume and channel volume. If the amp isn't loud they don't sound good. The clean channels are nice also and everything is very tweakable with alot of clean headroom.

For the amp models alone the amp is worth it. It has plenty of effects for me. Some may want more. This amp has the best reverb I have heard in an amp, but I have never owned a Line 6 amp and I do think they are great with thier effects. The delays are great, the tremolo is cool. The flanger and phaser are usable but not the best versions Line 6 has to offer.

This amp cuts through a band excellent with no feel or responsiveness of a modeller. Feels/reacts/sounds like a tube amp 100%!

Reliability : No Opinion
I haven't owned it for a long time yet so I am not sure.

Customer Support : No Opinion

Overall Rating : 10
Well, I am giving it a solid 10 for value. This amp is evidently designed by an amp guru. The 12 channels are all worthy if they are tweaked properly. Alot of that just comes from knowing what you want, and also realizing that what is directly in front of the speaker is what your audience hears. This amp has a very rich sound that is scary for the competition. I would say for the price there are few other amps made or ever made that will compete. This could be the best cluck for buck ever produced. So far no flaws in tone besides the modulation effects. It is all about that power section too. That right there is what makes it hard to beat for the money cuz that is what makes it sound incredible.

had it for a week now as i needed an amp for home as my 100 watt marshall is too loud.very versatile and fun to play with and pretty easy to dail in sweet tones.not very much control over effect parameters but they do sound decent nonetheless.also has effects loop and a celestion vintage 30 speaker

Sound Quality : 8
lead tones are very sweet and thick sounding.ihad a spider 2 and although it sounded good at low volumes when cranked became brittle and lifeless.the tubes in this amp took care of that.turn this one up and the sound just gets fuller and sweeter just like any decent tube amp.it has a real push at high volumes also.i havent jammed or gigged with it so i cant give you an opinion on that.i do think it would do just fine though.sound will also vary depending on the quality of your guitar also.you cant hide a low quality guitar with a tube amp. i have peavey vtype which sounds a little thin through it but my prs and les paul sound mucho grande.very warm clean sounds available too.

Reliability : 8
only had it for a week appears well put together although iam returing mine because of a tear in the rubber stripping between control panel and speaker housing.guitar center sold out at the momment so awaiting to swap it for another.

no problems yet

for a 1 12 combo amp im pretty blown away.as soon as i heard rhienhold bogner worked with line 6 on this i knew it was gonna be pretty damn good.a guy like that wouldnt put his name on a toneless piece of crap.you do need to spend time with the controls to get your tone out of it but that is true with any decent amp.

Digital modelling preamp > valve preamp > valve power amp with presence control. Four channels plus 300+ presets. Digital FX in the preamp (chorus/flange/phaser/tremolo and delay and reverb) Extension speaker sockets, FX send and return, built in tuner (very good tuner, way better than the one in my multiFX)
40watts of valve power make it useable for pub gigs, very loud. Louder than my 40w Marshall DSL401. No footswitch included.

Sound Quality : 7
Same 12 amp models as the other Spider series amps: clean amps like Roland JC and HiWatt through Fenders, Vox, Marshall, Boogie and such. Really great tones, the real valve side of things warms and details the sounds and is very responsive. This amp is far more responsive to playing dynamics and the guitar's controls than my Marshall. A/B'd against a Spider II on the same settings the SV has loads more richness, dynamics and vibrance. I waited til I'd done a gig with the amp before I posted anything. I played in a pub that I've played many times so I know the room. I didn't use any footswitch, I just dialed four sounds into the channel buttons and used the guitar (PRS CE and Gordon Smith Gypsy) to control volume. It worked great. The onboard FX are overcooked and very limited in their control. The delay is better as it has the tap control. The volume is no problem, there's loads on tap.
Amp models are same as Spider range and the same criticisms and compliments apply. i find the Boogie tones sound good but you need to tweak the middle otherwise you can't hear the amp when the band kicks in. I think the amp suffers in a similar way to when I plugged a Pod into the power amp of my Marshall: the Marshall coloured the settings so they sounded rather similar. This is basically whats happening with the SV, the digital preamp runs into a valve pre/power amp that adds its own personality. This (Bogner designed) amp is so good though that a bit of tweaking is all it takes to get some useable tones. On the wesite an interview with Reinhold Bogner includes the comment that Line 6 tried to give the player back that old-school style guitar driven control and resonsiveness and I think they've achieved that.

Reliability : 6
I leaned my Guitar against the front of the amp and managed to shatter two of the knobs. They still work though. The guitar was unmarked so I'd say the knobs are brittle and the control panel over exposed. It's made in China. I'm hoping the insides are better than the outsides.

Customer Support : No Opinion

Overall Rating : 10
Had loads of amps, guitars and FX. I always said the best amp I ever had was a Spider I 50w but it wasn't loud enough.
I've been playing so long now that all I want to do is get going, not spend 45 mins before a gig laying cables and stuff. And then it goes wrong.
A one-stop-shop amp where I can turn up to a gig with 2 guitar cases, the amp and a couple of cables, plug in, tune up and go is what I want, and thats what this is. I might end up with the simplest switch and a better chorus pedal.
If stolen Id replace with the same, or maybe I'm already saving for the Valve Flextone that Line 6 may or may not have in the pipeline
