Features : 7
1959 model with 1 x 8" (Jensen C8R), 2x 12AX7, 6V6, 5Y3. High and low gain inputs, volume, tone, vibrato intensity and vibrato speed, on/off slider and red on light. Probably 4-5 watt output. This is the smallest Magnatone to have featured their unique "true" vibrato. The vibrato really extends the basic "champ" sound and features. It gets a 7 because it is limited relayive to other amps that you could buy for similar money.

Sound Quality : 10
I mostly play blues with some jazzy influence on Fender or P90 equipped guitars. These lower gain guitars work well with old map. It has a sweet tone and breaks up at very friendly volumes. It doesn't scream but it does have a very sweet, compressed overdrive that, with a little bit of vibrato mixed in (medium intensity, low speed) gives it an ambient reverb-like effect that's very musical and pleasing. I've played and own many small amps (tweed Champs, Supros 1606, Tophat Cadet), this one is the king! Compared to an equivalent Supro, it's not as raw or loud, it is a very refined little amp but still a good blues amp. It gets a 10 because compared to similarly priced amps, it's a unique, sweet tone.

Reliability : No Opinion
Couldn't say. It's based on standard components and has simple circuitry so it should be reliable and shouldn't be hard to fix. There again, it's a 44 year old piece of consumer electronics so it's exceeded it;s design life many times over.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Magnatone is long gone but a competent amp tech should be able to keep this thing going forever.

Overall Rating : 10
Been playing 25 years, pretty much only play small tube amps these days and I have a collection of 10 small vintage amps for home use and playing club gigs (mic'd up). Unless I had a very quiet solo jazz gig, I'm not sure that I'd gig this one, at 5 watts it's too quiet for much except home based playing. This is one of my top 3 favorite amps and, with it's sweet tone and near perfect volume/break-up level, it'll get a lot of playing time. If anyone sees another of these amps - BUY IT!!!
