Not a lot to talk about here, this amp has one channel and the same controls as every Marshall Super Lead - presence, bass, mid, treble, volume I and volume II. No effects loop and no master volume but it has everything that any guitarist with control over their instrument should ever need! It is 100 watts, so there is enough power to be heard... from 5 miles away! I run this with a Bad Cat "The Leash" to try and bring this monster under control.

Sounds predictable, but I run this with an ivory Les Paul Custom. Awesome classic rock sound on Channel I. I run both volumes around 7 (with "The Leash" on of course!). Nice open distortion with plenty of clarity and sweet highs. The more you unwind "The Leash" the better it sounds of course. Plugging into channel II, there is a slight increase in gain, but more importantly, a noticable increas in mid range and a much thicker, more saturated sound. I found the Middle tone control to be the most crucial on this amp. I found the most preferrable setting for my style to be a slightly scooped mid, running treble and bass around 7 and the Middle to 5, with presence around 6. I also have Mesa Dual Rectifiers (which I love!) that are a lot less sensitive to EQ settings, so it took a while to tweak the EQ on this amp to find the sweet setting, but once dialed in, the tome cannot be beat! (sounds amazing when run together with a Mesa... best of both worlds!). I tried a ton of overdrive pedals before settling on a HBE Doomsday Device. It retains the natural growl of the Marshall, but accentuates the upper harmonics and adds a touch of gain and saturation for lead work. I run it with the level at 3 o'clock and the gain at 8 o'clock, but the amop definately sounds best pluggd straight in. I am keen to try some different preamp valves to see what extra tone that uncovers.

Picked the amp up and within a week gave it back to the shop with a very loud hum in the amp. A faulty capacitor was the culprit, As per usual, a 20 cent part was the undoing of a quality product. I have owned Marshall amps in the past and had a few niggling problem, but no more than I have had with my Mesa's, so that is good company to keep. This is a quality product.

As stated above, 1 small drama. It took the local service guy a few weeks to get it back to me (not Marshall's fault!), but it has been bullet proof ever since. Very happy with the support

Picked this amp up at a great price (they basically threw the Bad Cat Leash and cabinet for less than the list price of the head!). I own 1992 and 2000 models Mesa Dual Rectifiers and was looking for an EL34 powered amp to work in conjunction with a Mesa and I feel I found the perfect partner. If stolen, I would definately buy another one, now I have got it sorted out. Also sounds amazing with my Historic Series '56 Les Paul Gold Top loaded with P90's, Crunch Heaven!

Standard Plexi controls.Nothing new added from the original design.It does however come with a factory "cascade mod" that Randy had done at the Marshall factory.This was the same mod that Eric Clapton used in his early years.It is most widely known as the "one wire mod".Many other guitarists have employed this mod since the days of early Clapton.It is not a 2 channel amp (like described by the first submission),but a single channel amp with the cascade mod.

I warn you now - THIS AMP IS LOUD!!! It packs all of the classic Marshall tone you'd expect from a JMP Plexi circuit.It does however seem to be more robust than my 71,and 72 Marshall Plexi amps? It's been a while since I've played a post 1974 Marshall 100 watt Super Lead.The "cascade mod" is simply incredible! For those who would assume that the 1959RR is excessive in the midrange department...think again.Don't judge Randy's studio tone for the 1959RR's tone.Listen to "Tribute" live,and you'll quickly get the picture.
Marshall spared no expense in the production of the 1959RR.If you're expecting some cheesy Chinese reproduction transformers in the 1959RR - you're wrong! This pup sports the original spec Dagnall "power-house" transformers.It's plate-voltage measures at 450,and power-tube bias reads 30ma to 32ma respectively.The 1959RR can muster all the Rock & Roll moxy one would ever need...or want.
It's even-order harmonic tone structure is simply incredible.Throw a "Vintage Rat",or an MXR Distortion + in front,and you're in Rock Heaven baby! Not that you'll need any pedals - I just love the extra front-end punch!
I will recommend removal of the Marshall preamp tubes though... These consist of a JJ's(tonally sterile IMO)in V1,and a pair of Chinese 12AX7's in V2 and V3.I tried many different tube trios,and have found this is the best sounding line-up.
(***NOTE***)Make sure you use a "long-plate" 12AX7 in V1,and V2.JJ's tubes are "short-plate" tubes,and lack natural acoustical qualities.They sound great in modern circuit amps - but are just too "sterile" for vintage tones.
Here is my recommended tube trio:
SovtekLPS = V1
Jan/Phillips 5751 = V2
JJ's 12AT7 Gold Pin = V3 (Phase Inverter tube).
I would also recommend that you purchase an "Ultimate Attenuator".A THD HotPlate,and Weber Mass is good too.
Strap-in and hold-on! It doesn't get any better than this.

There were only 150 made for U.S. consumption.If it were stolen,I would cry like a whining child! There is no comparison to a Marshall Super Lead 100 with Dagnall transformers.There are many imitators - but only one Marshall 1959SLP! These weren't cheap either... $2,799.00 new! And worth every penny.I almost forgot... $haron Osbourne doesn't make a single cent off the sale of the 1959RR amplifier!
