2007 Marshall 4x12 1960AV (Vintage 30's) speaker cabinet.

For me it's bright and punchy, and always cuts through the mix during live performances. It's built tough and always performs. It sounds excellent with my Marshall JVM410H and Mesa Dual Rectifier. Everything sounds clear and punchy from clean to scream. I can't tell if it's my ear, or if the speakers have "broken in", or if I've simply learned how to dial my amps in with it, but it seems to sound a little warmer now than when I first bought it 8 months ago. Perhaps it's a combination of all those things.
I also have the following speakers, each sounding good, but not as good as the 1960AV:
1960A (stock g12T-75's)
Mesa 3/4 open-back 1x12
Marshall MC212
The Vintage 30's may be a bit bright for some people, and I would agree if I were only playing in front of it at home by myself. But for live performance it can't be beat for cutting through the mix. The 1960 with G12T-75's is great as well- that cab almost seems to have a widere frequency range and the upper mids are not as bright. That's my speaker for home use, but for live, it's the AV.

I have the Slash Signature series... 4x 12" Celestion Vintage 30's .. two inputs, on two differents modes (switchable to Stereo).. its loud.. its bloody heavy! ~45 Kilograms i believe ... i beleive its early to mid 90's.. Features are good in all, but i really only use the 16ohm input... I think its really versitile box, i play Alternative/Prog/Rock .. and blues, and also play acoustic through it.. Suites all of those sounds...

Sound quality i think is very rich.. I mainly play a Gibson SG Firebrand, and Laney LH50R head (50watt Valve) through and it sounds huge!! i often get comments about my sound when i play live... I am not a big gear nut, but i know what i like, when i hear it... value for money its great!! I tried out heaps of Cabniets when i bought this, and this was a stand out, and i bought it on the spot!!
I think it has alot of Bass response, without being "boomy".. but its for guitar! not bass, so the amount of bass i think is perfect (more to do with your amp i would say though), if you want more bass response, buy a bass and bass amp :P !

I love it.. better than my Laney 4x10" quad..
Only downer i have is its really big and bulky, and generally overkill, but thats the point right!!
I am not giving it staight 10's coz i am sure Mesa's or those hand made quads are better (i guess)..

This is a 2004 Marshall 1960AV 4x12 cabinet. The speaker is simple and does it all. It is also a stereo speaker which is excellent. It has 280 watts of output, plenty for me. The speakers are AMAZING (Celestion Vintage 30's.... they break up at only 30 watts). A truly amazing cab.

I'm using:
'89 American Fender Strat with 2 Duncan Hot Rails in bridge/middle, JB Jr. in neck, 500k Gibson pots, Sperzel locking tuners, graphite nut/bridge.
1 8-space SKB rack containing:
-Furman RP-L8
-Marshall JMP-1
-BBE Sonic Maximizer 462
-Rocktron Intellifex (blackface)

A typical Marshall cab. Wood is thinner than on a Mesa or Engl. The carrying handles are cheap plastic and don't hold well, I already had to replace one of it and I'll have to replace the other one soon. Rolls are better, they seem ok and more sturdy.
As all Marshallcabs, the plastic stuff covering it comes off with time and use.
The cab has Celestion Vintage 30 speakers with 16 ohm. These are not - I repeat NOT - the same as in a Mesa Boogie cab. That cab comes with Vintage 30s rated at 8 ohm. These 16 ohm speakers used here create a more traditional tone, more mids and less bass. The 8 ohm version, which is also used in Engl or Hughes&Kettner cabs sound more modern with more bass and lower mids.
The speaker cables are rather thin, other companies use better and more expensive cables here.
You can run it at 4 or 16 ohm or 8 ohm stereo. Nice! The jacks are recessed, so you won't break them by mistake.
There's nothing missing in the features, but read the reliablity below.

This cab sounds aggressive with many upper mids and treble. Not so much bass or lower mids, so it gives you a more classic rock/metal sound. Think Angus Young, Michael Schenker and the like. Sometimes the cab sound very harsh. It won't push out as much low-end as you might want a 4x12 to do. Obviously, this thing is more suited to a Marshall than a M/B Rectifier, but some people still use it with that kind of amp.
Why do they you might ask? While I'll flat-out agree that there are many cabs that sound better than this one, this one cuts through the band mix really well. I guess that is it's greatest asset.

As I wrote before, the handles and the cover is crap and not worth a cab this price. I bought this cab used in very good condition and used it live. It still works but you can see the use and tear a lot on this cab.

Personally, this cab isn't bad and has it's uses. I'd use one of these live because it just tears through the band sound and another cab for recording. If it was stolen or broken, I'd probably go for one of the cheaper ENGL or Peavey cabs.

Just your basic 4x12 angled quad cabinet. Carry handles, casters and fairly solid construction. Impedance switchable between mono and stereo, piece of cake. Vintage 30 speakers as well - the best that money can buy, IMHO.
Not much in the way of options, but it's a speaker cabinet, it's not meant to be a luxury car. It has all I need. The casters were the big bonus, how anyone moves a quad without them on is beyond me.
Oh, and this amp looks the part as well. Very smooth. There's something just cool about the way a marshall cab looks, with that distinctive logo that implies rock and roll and a lot of volume...

My setup is a Marshall JCM2000 DSL100 head running into the 1960AV and my guitar is a '61 RI Gibson SG with '57 Classic p/ups in neck and bridge. I use a BB2 Bluesbreaker for an overdrive/volume boost and have a couple of effects (flange/phase) in the chain as well as tuner pedal.
Prior to this I had a Crate 1960 clone with G12t-75 speakers (the industry standard) which were just too trebbly and didn't hold the low-end very well. The V30 speakers break up more smoothly and using the various modes on my amp (four tonal voicings between two channels) I can get everything from Fender-ish clean and oldschool plexi to classic JCM800 rock overdrive and modern hi-gain madness.
A lot of this is in part to the DSL100, which is a brilliant combination of classic and modern tones, but the 1960AV is the cab you have to use if you want a good rock sound old or new. It's quite simply, the money. Like all cabs and Marshall stuff, it sounds best loud. I find it does lose a little bit of tightness at very high volumes but that was with the gain maxed and using a booster pedal, so it was to be expected. Overall, a very nice crisp tone with superb mids and bass response. Not perfect, because there could always be something better out there, but close enough for me!

Don't foresee this puppy crapping out. My only worry is that the tolex will get a bit munted eventually. Not too fond of the plastic handles either (look and feel solid, but metal ones are always going to be better) but the casters are easy to roll and the amp is not overly heavy, meaning even a skinny rat like me can lug it unaided over shortish distances.
Tolex will eventually tear and I'll be sad.

This is best cab you can get from Marshall, if you want to be able to encompass a variety of styles, playing clean or diry, rhythm or lead. The 1960's whine too much and have no bass, the 1960x are a bit weak on power. The TV's are nice to look and would probably be my second choice, but don't sound as good for modern.
The only other cab I'd buy is the Mesa/Boogie 4x12 Recto quad, which is the same as the 1960AV, but has more low-end, good for playing more metal than rock. But at about $500 more, it's now worth it when my JCM2000 has the "deep" switch (which adds more low end thud) to simulate that sound almost identically.
Do yourself a major favor. Shell out the extra bones on this cab and you'll not be disappointed. Vintage 30's aren't just all about the hype. Just bear in mind that your quad will only sound as good as the amp and guitar driving it.

I play alot of alternative punk and the high end helps there to suite me fine
i play a fender stratocaster with a american pickups and seymore duncan humbucker "screaming demon"
at high volumes my humbucker sends the clean channel to a new level of distortion which is nice

Simply put, this is a Marshall 4x12 speaker cabinet. It has four Celestion Vintage 30 70 watt speakers, it has two inputs, one for 16 ohms mono and one for 4 ohms mono, and it has a mono/stereo switch so the two inputs become 8 ohm stereo inputs. Has casters, black tolex, black grill cloth.....what else can I say? I've been using this cabinet for every practice or show since I purchased it.

The sound that comes through this cabinet is very warm...sort of a "wallop" that really hits you hard. I like it. The amplifier I have plugged into this cabinet is a Marshall 1980 JMP 2204 master volume series. I hold the amp more responsible for the amazing feel than the cabinet, but the cabinet does contribute its share. My setup for practices and shows is: Gibson Les Paul Deluxe w/Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates bridge humbucker, into Marshall JMP 2204, into Marshall 1960AV 4x12 and 1960AX 4x12. The Vintage 30's in the AV have a very different feel than the Greenbacks in the AX. The Greenbacks must be pushed HARD to get up to satisfactory stage volume, so the sound becomes very saturated, and controlled feedback comes effortlessly. The Vintage 30's are at a good onstage volume at a very low volume settings on the amplifier. So...getting that awesome controlled feedback and infinite sustain is a little more tricky. Basically, when you are running the AV alone, you must be standing directly in front of the amp to get good controlled feedback. And yet, for all my praise of the AX....in my past experience, you seriously have to crank the amp (I'm talking a 50 watt JMP on 10 here) to be loud enough to keep up with the rest of the band. While the tone you achieve from doing this is quite literally out of this world, I can't afford to be burning power tubes at that rate (may have to invest in a Powerbrake or Hotplate eventually). So, every cabinet has its pro's and con's. However, when you combine the two cabinets for a full stack, it's a slightly different story. Both the early saturation/breakup/crunch of the AX AND the power handling/warmth of the AV are available to you. The tone is awesome. Nothing compares. Again, I attribute most of the credit to the JMP, which is in my opinion one of the greatest amps ever made, hands down. BUT...the speakers are important.
Side note: Before getting this 1960AV, I owned a Mesa "Recto" 4x12 w/Vintage 30's. In fact, I actually traded the Mesa cab for this Marshall cab. Now, while the speakers are the same type, the sounds they put out are very different. The Mesa is made for very bottom-heavy, knock-you-on-your-ass low end distortion. It's a great cab, just too "metal" sounding for the sound I like. The Marshall cab still packs the punch that I guess is just inherent in Vintage 30's, but the tone is much more straight ahead and rock-esque. It's perfect for me. Best tones are available with two different types of cabinet combined though.

There are Marshall cabinets just about anywhere in the world that music is played. They can break, but it would take some pretty severe punishment to actually destroy one. However, cosmetically, they don't hold up that well. That's why when you see a touring band come through your town and they have Marshall gear, it's usually pretty much beat to shit. The tolex tears effortlessly. Mine already has two large rips on the back just from sliding it into the back of a car. The grill cloth...well, I can already see its days are numbered. One time at my friend's house, I tossed one of his effects stomp boxes across the floor and it bounced up and hit the front of his Marshall cab, puncturing the cloth. To this day he hasn't noticed it though, hehehe. The important thing is the sound though. These cabs will stay together and produce some great sounds, as long as you don't mind them looking totally rugged and abused while doing so.

Overall, I'm very, very happy with my 1960AV. It compliments the JMP nicely, both in terms of sound (sounds like classic Marshall, duh) and appearance (looks like god when it's stacked on top of the 1960AX). If it were stolen, I'd have to find another used one. I don't think I could play guitar and take it seriously without my current setup. It's an excellent cab for any style of music you play. It's powerful. It looks cool. It'll last a lifetime...just be careful when you're loading it into the van. :)

Wonderful to be able to switch from mono to stereo with the flick of a (GASP....EASY-TO-READ) switch, as well as clearly marked ohmage on each jack. I'd give it a higher mark, but what else can you really do with a 4x12 cabinet in terms of features? Motorize the wheels?

I play hard rock with a pop flavor (think Thin Lizzy, UFO, pre-Hysteria Leppard, pre-Vandenberg Whitesnake), and so I'm looking for the super-thick but not too distorted tone of early 80's British hard rock (which to me, was the warmest distortion ever). My head is a hot-rodded Laney that gives me fabulous vintage distortion, and I needed a cab that would do the signal justice. After playing out of a Sonic for a decade, I finally made the switch to the 1960AV (edging out slightly over the 1960AX because I wanted the warmth of the old greenbacks but the power of a modern 70W). The difference was unreal. I finally have that Schenker/Clark/Angus tone that no one seems to be able to reproduce in modern rock! The amp takes what is essentially a low-gain, high-output signal and keeps it round and boomy. Haven't tried it for anything else, but why would I want to?

I wish I could speak to some of the other aspects I could only rate after a long time, but I can honestly say it was EXACTLY what I was looking for and has performed perfectly to my expectations. If you're looking for the tone I've described above, this is a step in the right direction. If you want a massive fuzzed-out distortion attack ala Slayer or Pantera, or you want the smoothness of a Strat ala Clapton or the Crowes, try something else.

guitar is a carvin dc127 with active pickups. amp is mesa dual rectifier rackmount. other equipment -- dbx 266XL comp/gate. the best seet-up ever for fast punk/metal. the speakers are celestion vintage 30's, which are the only speakers that go loud enough, in my opinion. everything else sucks. i compared it to a mesa recto 4x12 cab, but the rectifier sounded too bassy through the mesa cab -- this one tones down the bass and gives a great even sound. gets kill-your-parents loud, which is perfect.

it's a marshall, so the tolex scratches, the grillcloth is kinda cheesy, and the wheels suck -- but the speakers are celestion, and the sound is awesome, so who cares?

marshall got back to me within a few days by email about a question i had -- not bad for an international company.

i'm going to keep it until i die, it gets stolen, or my hands fall off from playing guitar too much. i've played for 8 years, and this is the first set of speakers i've really fallen in love with... and it's not as friggin' heavy as the mesa! i'd buy it again if it were stolen (and if i had the money -- ouch!)

Recent vintage, I believe, but hard to find info on this oddball. Label says 1960 Vintage. The speakers in it are G12T-75 "Vintage", which I was told are different than the G12T in the 1960A, of which this looks just like. They DO seem to break up more smoothly. Has the switch for for 4 or 16 ohm, or two 8 ohm split, which is handy. EXTREMELY loud.

Strat, Tele's, Les Paul Special--and they all sound good through this thing. I have run BF Bassman, BF Bandmaster, Univox U1011, and Marshall JCM800 2203 into it. All sound killer. I even ran a Blues Jr. through it, and IT screamed. Good for, actually, quite a few things. Gets total heavy metal/rock tone, but with a Fender, still can coax some blues out of it.

Not much to say here...the thing handles 300 watts...what can you do to it?

Never dealt with Marshall, and hope I don't have to because of this...it's used anyway.

Playing 20 years, have numerous other cabs...Fender, Univox, Traynor, Cordovox. I DON'T like moving it, although I can handle it myself. Gives overall good sound.
