Vintage covering(tolex??),Grey checkered grill,1 mono input 16ohm,small Marshall logo.I have absolutly no use for a stereo cab so thats nota factor. The only down fall to this cab is it lacks cab corners, after 4yrs of giging the edges are just starting to peel.

Best cab ever made,my fatherhas two Original 1968 greenback cabs and I have the reissue(1998-9).The originals havea slightly smoother sound which I'm gonna guess is there age showing(weakened magnets, aged wood etc...)Thsi cab is perfect for any type of rock I run a JCM00 SL-X or a JCM800 2204 and both sound supurb. Can get anthing from Santana to Skynard to Hendrix to Iron Maiden to Deep Purple etc..Perfect for any classic rock, southern rock, hard rock and metal(maiden, preist quiet riot etc..)You won't get a Fender sound out of it but, what areyou doing looking for a fender amp sound from a marshall amp??lolHas that real Marshall bark midrange, will sweeten leads and give a sweet growl to power chords.Higher wattage cabs have too tight a sound its all preamp. You won't get a Mesa Boogie chunkysound from it but to me sounds like crap anyway.

As long as you don't crank a 100W head into one cab it'll lasta lifetime.Run a 50W head with one cab or two cabs with a 100W head.

This is the cab any lead guitarist should have if they like a natural tube overdrive sound.Higher wattagecabs sound a little bottom heavy and tight and don't break up,without breakup you get a fake preamp distortion, which is a little buzzy to me.

I'm running a TSL60 through it, and it sounds fabulous.
The funny thing is, when I was at the store, I was comparing the tsl60 (which was running through a standard 1960a) to a dsl100 (through this cab). The tsl was way on sale, so I was trying to like it almost as much as the dsl. The dsl just smoked the hell out of the tsl. As I was starting to cry, an idea hit me - run the tsl through this cab. I did, and the sound was there. I aslo ran the tsl through the 1060av (vintage 30) cab, but liked the greenbacks the best.
The cab has a strong personality. The amp definately rocks through the cab. I think it would have a hard time with real high gain, and it may not get as sparkly clean as other cabs, but it NAILS the sound that it gets. I'm talking jaw to the floor nails it.

I love this cab. It is an incredible rock cab. Won't necessarily do metal, or country, but it will nail that medium gain realm. At 100 watts, I wind up pushing the power section on my head a little more, which I think is a good thing for a marshall head - the higher they're turned up, the better they sound!
If something happened to it, I would try to find another one. Or maybe just get a regular cab and buy the greenback speakers...

We have a standard sized 4X12 Marshall cabinet here. The Big thing here is the 25 watt "Green Back" Celestions. The second thing which I feel is cool (just my opinion) is the cosmetics. The checkered grille clothe is a nice touch in my opinion. This amp cabinet is mono only. And probably would be considered to have a limited range due to the strong personality of the afore mentioned "Green Backs". They have a sound all their own that can dictate what the sound of the head plugged in will sound like in a big way. That being said I guess the proper way to address the features score would be to give a low score.

The amp I'm driving this cab with is a Marshall JCM2000 DSL100. The guitars used have been mainly stock strats and a Howard Roberts Fusion from Gibson (Semi-Hollow singe cut with 2 humbuckers). Most people view this amp as a high gain head as did I when I first tried it out at the store...I was not interested. It was plugged into a 1960A cab and sounded very much like a metal or hard rock suited amp. Clean tones seemed somewhat brittle and unresponsive, and gainy settings sounded very aggresive for my tastes. When I was leaving the store just for fun I plugged the head into the 1960AX.
Astounding! It was as if it was a total different amp. I liked the looser feel that seemed to follow my playing a little easier. It seemed to really lend a smooth feel to everything I did. Very Nice. It was a tough pill to swallow but this cab turned me into a half-stack user. I was a devout combo man. But I feel this cabs vibey look and feel, and sound have made me feel obligated to take it to every gig. It definately is a help for weekend warrior types like myself. I believe it's the low wattage speakers that make the amp feel like it's driving harder at lower volumes. Gives me sort of the feel of a cranked amp when you get the speakers to bark a little.
This is all great for me, because I dig the sound it's throwin out. This is why it must be said this is not a versatile cabinet. It seems to do one sound exceedingly well. I've experimented with some of my combos (a Clark Amplification Tyger, read tweed Bandmaster, and a Super Reverb) driving this cab. It definatley stamps it's own signature on the tone. It made these diverse amps sound, not the same, but maybe from the same family tree if you know what I mean.
That's either the beauty of this cab or the rub, dependent upon your point of view.
That being said, even though I love the tone of this cab, I feel I have to give it a middle high mark here.

Been playing 12 years in a couple of classic rock/blues bands in that time. Have had or still own Fender Hot Rod DeVille, Fender ToneMaster, Fender 1966 Super Reverb(not a reissue) Fender Cyber Twin, Fender Blues Junior, Marshall TSL122, Marshall JCM800, Clark Amplification Tyger (See my review of the Tyger on Harmony Central, It's one Badass Tweed), and some other amps that I can't remember right now. Too many amps and cabinets, and I always sound remarkably the same to everyone who sees me play. I think I sound vastly different with each peice, but everyone assures me I always sound like me. I hope they mean that as a compliment.

This is the 1960AX 4x12, althought seeing as this cab was manufactured in 1975, it is an original and not the more common reissue cabs. Four Celestion Greenback 25 watt speakers for 100 watts total power handling, one single 16 ohms mono input, sockets for casters, checkered grill cloth...but it is more of an aged, yellowish shade rather than the new cabs' gray cloth (the aged cloth is very, very cool looking). An 8 ohms mono input would be nice, but this is a VINTAGE cabinet, so no complaints.

Soundwise....this cabinet really can not be beat. I'm running a Marshall JCM 900 50 watt head into it, and playing a Gibson Les Paul Deluxe with a Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates humbucker at the bridge. It's the classic Marshall tone, that's for sure. I even plugged my Mesa Boogie Mark III head into it (set at 60 watts) and it sounded amazing as well. Here is my main complaint about the cabinet, and it's my own fault for not thinking it through harder in the first place before buying it:
The 25 watt speakers, while they sound absolutely incredible, just are not powerful enough for me. I play punk/hardcore/indie rock type stuff, and the sound my band has requires me to be fairly loud. Before I purchased this cab, I had the JCM 900 going into a Mesa "Recto" 4x12 with four 70 watt Vintage 30's. I'll put it this way....with the Mesa cab, I could switch the JCM 900 down to a mere 25 WATTS (!!!) and crank the amp to about 7 or 8 and blow the whole band away, no problem. With this Marshall cab, I have to keep it set to the standard 50 watts, and even with the amp turned all the way to 10, it's just barely audible over the rest of the band. With the Mesa cab, I can get UNBELIEVABLE controlled feedback, it sounds so great. With the Marshall.....next to none, just an uncontrollable hum. The looks of the Marshall are just too nice though, so I'm seriously considering replacing the Greenbacks with Vintage 30's. Again, the sound you can get from this cabinet is just amazing for anything from clean stuff to the classic mildly overdriven smooth rock sound to high gain applications, like punk rock or even some metal. I just prefer (and require) Vintage 30's for MY sound.

I will again compare this to a Mesa........This cab seems a lot less sturdy than my Recto cab. Then again, this cab is 27 years old, not two. The grill cloth could easily be ripped if I weren't so damn careful with my equipment. One of the handles has developed a slight rattle (I can fix it, no problem), and most importantly, one of the speakers seems to have sustained some damage. I used it for ONE band practice. I guess a 50 watt head into a 100 watt vintage cab at 9 for two hours was too much for it to handle. It still works and all, but when I'm not playing, there is a very audible crackling, static-y noise coming from the speaker. And sometimes it sounds like it's completely blown (only twice, and it didn't last long). Damn fickle Greenbacks! Vintage 30's here I come.

I've never dealt with Marshall in any way. I really don't want to. I own two pieces of Marshall gear and I got them both used. The cab in particular, being nearly three decades old. They'd probably blow me off if I called them with questions or concerns. I've heard some really negative stories as well. Plenty of Marshall repair and service centers locally though.

My original plan was to combine this cabinet with my Mesa cabinet for an awesome full stack....four Vintage 30's, four Greenbacks, nice. However, it's kind of ridiculous to play a full stack in a band when the other guitarist only has a half stack, you know? So until the day he gets another cabinet, this Marshall will remain in my basement as part of my practice amp so I don't have to haul cabinets back and forth from home to practice. At least until I get the Greenbacks replaced with Vintage 30's anyway, then this will become part of my main setup. If this got stolen, I'd be REALLY upset because I passed up a mint Gibson natural finish Firebrand SG to get this instead. I'd seriously consider locating another, if I could, but I'd consider a 1960AV since they already come standard with Vintage 30's. But the main thing that sold me on this cab, sadly, was the looks. The most beautiful cabinet I've ever seen in my life, hands down. Regular 1960 cabinets are just so common and ordinary...these are fairly unique. If it had the Vintage 30's, it would be the greatest cabinet EVER, there would be no competition. If anybody reading this has four Celestion Vintage 30 speakers they would like to trade for four Celestion Greenbacks, e-mail me and we'll talk.

I have the best setup in the world. I love channel switching amps for their versitility, but need low wattage for this baby. Solution...the mesa Mark IV head. Run it at tweed power on class A(runs about 30 watts total), drop in some Russian 6L6's (english tubes are for girls) dail up the 2nd(rythm) channel, set the eq for no mid's and lots of everything else, and turn it way up. I use a Gibson Flying V with the ceramic pickups which have tons of output, but not too much. Just enough to keep it under control when it needs to be clean. Everyone will tell you Plexi is the way to go, i say screw em, even saldano and bogner cant touch this setup. this cab gets super dirty though when you turn the clean up, and thats why you should buy it in the first place, but it adds a roar and color all its own to an already overdriven tone put into it. I suggest if you do this that you run it through an 8 ohm output jack instead of a 16, the mismatch will give you a darker, more controlled sound instead of the full on treble blast you get with normal impendence.

Bottom line, if you know why your buying this, then you know WHAT your buying this for. High gain kids stay away (except all you mark fans). If you want to add a little bark to a nice smooth overdrive, grab one, if you want a sparkling clean, try something else, like a cab with EVM speakers (and make sure you buy a forklift with em, those things are soooo heavy).

I use an Ibanez RG570 w/ EMG in it, I am a mesa fan, i love them, i think marshall are disapointing and have gone horribly downhill, except for this cab I played my guitar through a Marshall JCM 2000 TSL head hooked up to the big popular marshall cab that every one has (which sucks so horribly) and it sounded so shitty i couldn't believe it, no bass, distortion that sounded like my fat friend farting into a microphone, but then I used the one plugged into this cab, HOLY SHIT! It sounded really good, I intend to use this as my second cab when I get the cash, I've already got a mesa recto cab, a mesa 90/90 poweramp and a sansamp PS1 Preamp, my stup already sounds godsent! But considering I'm playing through a stereo power amp, I have to take advantage of that, and this will definatley be my cab of choice, matched w/ the mesa cab w/ the V30s I will have the sound that I have been waiting for

I'm using a Gibson Les Paul Standard with a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge and a '59 in the neck. I go straight into a Voodoo Amps modified JCM800 2204. I play in a band that would probably fit somewhere in the indie/emo/hardcore genre. Genres really aren't my thing though. I was previously using a Mesa Recto cabinet. The sound of this cabinet could be described as smooth and midrangey. It also has great bass response which I'd say is much more clear than the recto. The bass is projected a lot better and doesn't get lost in the mix. Also the high end is much rounder than that of the Recto. I'm guessing this is mostly a difference between the greenback and the vintage 30. I know the Vintage 30 loaded cabinets are all the rage now, but I find that this cabinet has much more character. The tone and projection are awesome.

I've been playing for about 6 years and I've used a number of other 4x12 cabinets in that time including Mesa Recto, the standard Marshall 900, Peavey 4x12MS and a few others. This cabinet is by far my favorite. It has a little extra character that none of the others have and it complements my guitar and amp very well. If it were stolen I'd probably buy another because I think this cab has become an essential part of my sound.

Just got a few months ago, new on trade in of my backup combo, an all tube laney 100watt half stack. I really wanted an original cab from the early 70's but people want $1500 for them! I am 23 yrs old and only play what I think sounds good and the 25 watt celestians have a sound I like much better, its a rounder chunck with less brassiness in the high end, plus it seems that the the cabinet distorts a little more than my celestian 70 watt cab. My amp is a 1976 Marshall JMP 50 watt that has been modified to run the the preamp structure twice (an old amp with extreme hi gain) so it really matches the look as well!!
This thing is so loud- I don't understand how my 50 watt head is louder and chunkier than the my 100 watt laney, but I don't care either - its sounds good, so I play it. As far as having no opinion about features- well its a speaker cabinet that you plug a cable into. Not many features, plug in play that works!!

Well I am using a Fat Tele and a Strat Plus both with Seymour Duncan Hot Rails in the bridge position - I also put 500K volume pots in the guitars for a little extra boost as well. I play driving swing rock and hardcore, as well as several funk tunes. This thing lets my Marshall JMP 50 watt head sing!! It gives me a different and better sound in my opinion of course. Actually I hope people stick to thinking more wattage means better--that way a whole lot of people won't sound like my tone! Another thing about this cab is the response overall will make bad players sound worse and good players sound great!! It really tracks every nuance of the way you attack the strings with you pick, so be careful if you are a sloppy player :)

Well the other guitar player in my band has an original cab from 1969 with the orignal 'greenbacks' - which have faded but color wise but sound great. Its beat up but works great. These speakers are the same spec so I am sure that they will last. The cab look great overall and I only found one blemish in the 'tolex' stuff which I easily fixed with super glue. I see this cab being with me for the rest of my life. It has been through several gigs and been thrown around by my roadies with no prob.

I've been playing for a long time and started out playing high wattage non tube amps. Ever since I met my other guitar player and his Modded 1978 Marshall JMP and the vintage cabinet I have fell in love with tube amps and the sound they make. Again, kids today think they have to have 150 watt triple rectifier heads with 300watt cabs which is cool if thats what they want- but cone cry and low wattage sound better to me. I once put my 50 watt head and 100 watt cab next to a buddies 150 watt Mesa and 300 watt cab and my stack was just a loud with little more headroom. I hope this remains a sound that stays in the hands of few :)

I run it with JCM 2000 TSL60 head. Say I'm crazy using "Vintage" cab with gainy "modern" amp? Well I got this cab on occasion. A friend of mine, knowing that 'm planning to get a head sold me his cab twice cheaper than it cost. I couldn't resist. I just thought I can sell it at the same price anytime... When I finally purchased the amp I thought that probably I won't replace the cab... As long as TSL60 has a clean channel with a very good approximation to the "tweed" sound the vintage quality of cab is very useful. When I tested amp in the store it didn't sound that good with a regular 1960 cab.
I must say that this cab doesn't lack the bass responce, tha bass is just not tight and too round. But when I placed an EQ before an amp and cut a bass (and tweaked it at max on amp) I got sound that's 'metal' enough for me. At least I'm capable to sound very heavy, yet juicy. Also on stage and in a studio I can add to a miked sound a direct one (TSL features emulating DI output)... So I'm quiet happy with this cab.
