Aside from components, most 4x12 speaker cabs have roughly the same features. This cab's salient feature is the use of Celestion 25w "Greenback" speakers.

I agree with previous reviewers who state that this cab might not be the best choice for more modern sounds. Thank God. I'll never sound like Limp Bizkit now...
The 1960AX is great when used with an older Marshall head (I have a 2204 50w head). The best description of the sound obtained via this head and cab combo is Back in Black-era AC/DC tone. When I was on my cabinet quest, I tried several Marshalls, and this was far and away the best. My least favorite was the run-of-the-mill 1960: way to many lows and very harsh and unmusical. I really can't find fault with this cab's sound.

It's pretty sturdy. About the only thing that could go wrong would be a blown speaker.

A little expensive, even when purchased used, but it sounds brilliant.

Brand new slant 4 x 12" cabinet, but with new gray grillcloth and 25Watt speakers versus the 70W that are in the 1960AV and the 75W that are the regular 1960A. It's a cab, what more can one say. Quite versatile Marshall cab if you like '60s and early '70s rock but it's not usefull for modern stuff, at least not the stuff I do which requires some bass response. This amp smacks of Woodstock-era Fender strat guitar work, a la Jimi. The stuff I do now is very dense and wall-of-sound. I need bass and this cab honks out the midranges mainly and that's just about it.

This cab sound EXTREMELY different than a regular or vintage cab. I have a Vintage (1960AV) which tries to emulate the old 30Watt Greenbacks (strange, and confusing because it uses 70watt speakers, but it does) and it sounds quite similar to a standard 1960a cab. BUT, the 1960AX is what you NEED if you want the Jimi Hendrix sound. I never realize how different the modern Marshall sound has become until I heard this cab. AMAZING. Do NOT get this cab if you do modern rock / pop / alternative (well, that's my opinion of course). This is a classic rock cab. You're not going to get the bass response if you're playing with JCM-800 / 900 / 2000 etc. They should have just called this the Woodstock model or something. hehe. It's really honky, just like Jimi's sound. I give it a 7 simply because it's very limited in it's tonal range as a result of the smaller wattage speakers. You're stuck with the sounds of classic rock...

I've been playing for 14 years and was really into classic rock until 7 years ago and now I play very modern progressive rock that is quite noisy and heavy and light at the same time, so I know my tones. This would be an excellent *addition* to a stereo rig but I wouldn't be able to use it as my sole cab. It's too honky, limited to that Jimi range, but it does it oooh so well! I give it a 7 overall because the limitations outweigh its advantages a bit. But if you were a classic rock player who was into bands like Free, Yes, Hendrix, etc. then this amp is a 10... buy it right now! :)

A Marshall JCM 200 DSL50 drives this cab. For the clean tone, it really picks up all the subtle little nuances of your playing style. It also responds well to the radical EQ changes that this particular Marshall head can administer. With a vintage overdrive, you get a really beautiful vintage tone thats nice and smooth, and alot of the natural compression of the amp really shines through. Throw in a fuzz face, and you can really nail the Hendrix/early Clapton/Eric Johnson lead tones. Again, very smooth. But again, this cabinet is designed exclusively for a vintage type of sound. Modern sounds are not this cab's specialty. If you try to throw in a Boss Metal Zone pedal or something like that, you're still not gonna get that chunky type of percussiveness that you can get from a 300w Marshall cab or a Mesa Boogie, etc. But I think you get a sweeter sounding tone from the greenbacks, so you have to kinda weigh the pros and cons there. The only effects I'm currently using on this amp are the stock reverb from the amp head itself, and a Boss delay pedal, so I'm still getting the raw guitar to amp signal. The tones are georgeous, just not that versatile.

Admittedly, I just play in my apartment(much to my neighbors'lament)so I play at very low levels, mostly. I did crank it bigtime once when a hurricane passed by and all the people in my apartment building left, and there were no problems at all. I've given it regular use for about a year now, and it's been great.

Never had to deal with them, so I guess that's a plus. Marshall does have an informative web site, though.

If you're looking for an exclusive tone that effectively mimics a vintage sound, this is your puppy. If you're looking for something a little more versatile, as far as switching between vintage and modern tones, you may consider continuing your search. But by all means, do check out how this cabinet sounds to hear first hand those famous, sought after tones that Marshall is so noted for.
