It's basically a very good amp for rock music, but it's also suitable for Jazz or blues. I have the old model which comes with EL-34 tubes. The new models have 5881 tubes. They give it a Fender sound, so I'm happy with this one. EL-34 tubes RULE! The tone-controls are okay. Bass, Mid, Treble and Presence is basically what an amp needs, nothing more. The preamp consists of 3 12AX7 tubes. That's basically enough, but for some real lead sound I'd wish it had a 4th tube in it. Marshall should bring out the SL-X version with Reverb, then it'd be okay. The half-power option is okay, but gives a slight hum (maybe something isn't okay in my amp, I bought it second-hand), but when you take ou tone of the fuses it is a 50 W tubeamp (4500). This is great, they should make it switchable!

I bought this a few weeks ago and it ROCKS! THe amp has 2 channels, clean and drive. The clean channel distorts a bit, but the drive channel really rocks. Still, I wish the tube would "sing" a bit more. That's why I bought an Ibanez Tubescreamer TS-808 (modified TS-9) to really make it scream from heaven. The FX-loop I don't use, but maybe later I will connect a hush to it. The overdrive-channel has a bit of hiss, especially when combined with a Tubescreamer. Basically, this amp is THE amp for metal! I will never get an other one.

It's a Marshall! I have experience with it, not only from myself, but also from friends! You can throw a Marshall-amp from it's stack and it will keep on playing like nothing happened! A Marshall-amp is just a big box of concrete, unbreakable!

I've been playing for 8 years now. I use a Gibson Flying V and an Ibanez Axestar Explorer. Together with the Marshall I have a 1960A Lead speaker and a tubescreamer. To dimm the hiss of the tubescreamer I use a Boss Compressor/Limiter with Noise Gate. Very good combination!

This amp is a two channel all tube screaming saint from heaven. It is very versatile for my styles of blues and other types of music. It has an effects loop (although I don't use it often) The distortion is a bluesy type.... you won't find a death METAL sound here.... I run it through a straight 1960 Marshall Cab (to get that true MARSHALL tone)

I play an American made Jackson Dinky through it on neck (single coil) for that clean sound or on bridge (humbucker) for a dirty sound. The amp has a slight hum to it but none of great inconvienience. The clean channel is SwEeT! the distortion on channel #2 pushes a bit farther..... but not too far into metallic sound types. As most Marshall Amps, this one sounds best CRANKED to extremes.

I used to play through Fenders but I prefer this one. I would buy it again I LOVE IT. I love the cleaness of the first channel and how Just enough distortion taints the guitar's signal on the drive channel. I am very satisfied

The type of music I play is Death Metal, and regular Heavy Metal... Like Morbid Angel, and Megadeth. On it's own it sucks. The distortion has no power to it, it's very weak, and thin sounding. I was pissed when I played though it but then I just ran my Boss Metal Zone pedal through it, and it sounds great, but on it's own it sounds horrible. The one good thing is, on the Low Gain channel, wiht the gain all the way up, it is a perfect sound for songs like Red House, and good bluesy stuff like that. And High Gain sounds allright for leads, but as for heavy rhythm, it really sucks. Just so you know I was using a '67 Gibson Flying V, with PAF humbucker's using the brifge pickup for rhythm, and the neck pickup for leads.

I wouldn't buy it again, I love the clean tone, and the Low gain channel for bluesy stuff. The distorion sucks though. Compared with numerous Crate Amps, and Fenders. I wish it had more effects, and a better distortion tone. ------------Would like advice on trying to make this thing sound better....so far I;ve been told to use an Octave pedal to get more crunch, also been told to use compressor. Let me know.------------

2 Channel footswitchable with seperate footswichable reverb for each channel. Effects loop is level controllable for stomps vs. rack effects and is driven by a PCB (not a tube). Seperate gain and master volume for each channel. 4-5881(6L6) power tubes and 3 pre-amp tubes. "Diode clipping" enhanced gain circuit.

Versitile for a range from clean to heavy. Using a Strat w/Texas Specials. Reverb is disappointing and has a slight trailing buzz (maybe a loose spring.) No problem with feedback into my 4x10 cabinet. More than enough volume. EQ knobs don't do enough on their own-need an external EQ for "thrash" sound.

Overall good but I have heared better things about the JCM 800 series. Reverb is the major drawback.

as far as channels go, this has one: distorted. the switchable volumes is completely lame, so don't even hope for a clean signal. i've never used the effects loop. this amp is loud as hell. it easily drowns out all other instruments in a large room with the master at 1 o'clock. versatility of the distorted sound is pretty good; bottom line is that marshall gain totally rips. again, a higher rating if not for lack of a clean channel.

once again, the lack of a clean sound is a prob...using the pre-volume and the gain sens. knobs will get you basically any distorted sound. the eq is great; you can get pits-of-hell-no-mid-death tone, or warm-fuzzy-blues. this head will take care of whatever distortion needs you'll have. gain goes up to 20. never tried single-coils, but humbuckers sound real nice. the marshall distortion really shines. the gain itself is kinda on the really thick side, but then again, i'm running two humbuckers.

never had to do anything about it. then again, i've been real careful in handling when moving it. haven't had to deal with tube replacing.

the one and only problem with this head is the absence of a clean channel. otherwise it does everything else well and sounds great (and loud). this head really lives up to the legendary marshall sound, which is the distorted sort.

100W all tube dual channel head. reverb on each channel (clean/od). Effect loop (never use it). DI outs (not worth your time). Very versatile, but like any Marshall, sounds best when the volume knob passes 12:00. Great in the studio. Good for live gigs, but too loud for small venues. Mine is from 1990 and has 4 EL-34's instead of the 5881's it comes with now.

Always turning the treble down, because it has a tendency to be a bit shrill (even when the bass is cranked and I use my neck pickup). I like the clean channel, nice warm body, and the reverb is actually quite nice. The heavy pre-amp goes to 20, and it's seriously heavy, although thinner than the 800 series. But you gotta play it loud to really enjoy it. Earplugs are a must.

'ol faithful. Changed tubes twice in seven years. The Groove tubes I put in it seem to do it justice. Had to do some minor connection soldering from all the banging around in the van, but all's swell.

Good for big, loud gigs. The harshness is a BIG minus. Better off finding the 800 series dual-reverb if you need an amp like this. Then again, it records beautifully. And the 4x12 cabinet sounds great with any amp plugged into it. I use a '67 Tremolux through it and it sings.

This is a 2 channel 100 watt all-tube amp. It has 4-5881 and 3-ECC83 tubes, reverb for each channel, effects loop. This amp has a lot of power but is lacking in some features. I wish it had seperate EQ for each channel, the effects loop is noisy and the reverb is all but useless.

This is a great amp for rock/hard rock. It is one of the best in that catagory (it IS a Marshall). It is actually very quiet for such a high-powered amp. The only noise problem I had was with the effects loop. The clean channel has a lot of headroom for a Marshall, but the dirty channel is where this amp shines, loud, dirty, awesome!! That great Marshall tone. I'd recommend it for any rock/hard rock guitar player

Just want to add to my previous submission: My amp totally crashed a few days ago... I basically burned it. Hadn't changed tubes for a while and they got fried... kinda... It will probably not be very expensive to fix but it still bugs me a bit.

All-tube, two channels with individual reverb and master controls. Loop, lots of line ins and outs. EQ works better on overdrive channel than most marshalls. Good presence control

Sound great with closed cabinet. Overdrive gets mushy with open cabs. I use a 100W reissue 4*12" cab, the people at marshall told me not to because the amp is too strong but as long as you don't crank it works and sounds much better than the 300W modern cabs. Don't use any reverb, or very little with the overdrive!!! it gets way too bright with reverb...
