Its a basic amplifier with Clean and OverDrive. But thats really all you need for on the go play! It also has a clip to clip onto your belt. For the price, its easily a 7/10

Sound quality is great for the price. Now if I were to go and compare it to like a Marshall MG50FX that wouldnt be fair because obv the MG50 is going to have more volume and more distortion. So I'm comparing it to other mini amps I own. This amplifier blows them away. This is the best mini amp you can buy in my opinion, earning it an 10/10 in the sound department.

Well, you can't really expect something that small to last long. As long as you take good care of it, it will last a while, but if your the kind of person that drops things alot then this amp won't last to long.

Overall, this is a fantastic amplifier. Late at night I can use this w/o waking up my folks, and during the day I crank it all the way up for a nice, Marshall sound. Easily giving this a 9 on the overall department.

This amp is for fun or practice in your bedroom. It sound just like what it is: a small, cheap amp. The clean channel cranks at 10 o??clock. Well the OD channel is overdriven but at high volume it gives away some terrible noise, like the speaker was broken (it??s not, I have checked).
I play a Les Paul copy (no name!)HB pickups, sounds good through my other amps.

I bought it to look good in the shelf, and it does, but it is useless as a amp.
At first i planed to build it into a big amp-head and run it thru my 12" speaker, but i dont care now.

The Marshall Micro Amp (MS-2), is a portable travel take anywhere micro amp designed for playing your guitar when your own your own or maybe. It features just 2 Watts of raw Marshall power.
The other model is the MS-4 (I'll review it soon), of which has a massive 4 watts of raw Marshall power and hence the -# designates the wattage in this case.
When I first plugged into this amplifier I was horrified by the case buzzing you get. (Why couldn't you have built the casing from wood with a vinyl cover like a traditional amp Marshall, it would have improved the overall sound and removed the buzzes which are inherent in the plastic design). I guess I'm asking a bit much from such a small amplifier but if it's got that Marshall name stamped across it(which it most certainly does), it suddenly has a lot to live up to. There not known as some of the greatest amps in the world for no reason, right Marshall?
I purchased this amplifier on a whim to satisfy my growing appetite for a Marshall amp until I can find a nice JCM 800 or the like (80's melodic rock fan not to mention Yngwie Malmsteen, Dokken etc), so a Marshall is a natural hunger. Ultimately I figured it was probably going to be a bit of a joke(which in some ways it is), but anything for that Marshall sound so I could save my big bucks for the real deal and have something to passify the eternal hunger for tone.
Flicking open the box and plugging in the amp(battery was included in the package), I let it rip.
On the clean channel you get an OK type of sound but it's a bit low key(not to mention low volume). Turning it up results in a bit of distortion, however the tone does seem to get 3 major sounds, I'd declare muffled, punchy and sparkly. There's not much inbetween and for what it is, this suffices.
The magic comes in the form of the Over Drive (OD), mode on the amp. Suddenly I was blown away with a sound that was most deffinately Marshall and the reason you buy a Marshall in the first place, for that nice prowling growl that's different from other amps such as Fender or Crate for example. Best of all like other Marshall amps I've tried your able to give it your all and it performs.
Now for the low down. Look, the plastic is going to degrade that nice Marshall sound you'll be expecting. Also there's a buzzing which I quickly discovered is almost completely removed by ditching the batter y cover. Seriously the first thing you MUST know if you get an MS, is that the battery cover is junk and just bounces around creating annoying buzzing noises when you play. Leave it the box where it belongs and you'll improve your sound there.
The next major flaw is the plastic casing. I don't think it's sufficient to hold the internal speaker which no doubt would be glued in at best. The case vibrates to hell and standing the amp on a solid surface results in annoying buzzing from the vibration.
Still overall I'd give the amp a 6.5/10 because you can surprisingly get a sound that's close to that classic Marshall sound everyone knows and loves. So on that alone I take my hat off to the designers of this little portable. Also for the price and the construction you can't expect miracles. I'll also confess that I'm using it a lot more than my Pignose or Dan Electro 'Bacon and Eggs' amps. Why? Like I said I'm amazed that you can just get some of that Marshall magic. Alright it's limited, there's not much but it's there (please note I'm talking on the portable side here, it wouldn't be fair to compare this to a JCM or a Valvestate etc because this would be like a fart compared to those legends).
Marshall have obviously gone out on a limb which could threaten the company in terms of making them look 'trinket', 'gimmicky' or even 'cheap' so I take my hat off to them by trying to get the Marshall sound out there and more accessible to the folks who can't afford the real deal.

I wouldn't want to breath the wrong way on this little guy, let alone busk or take it out with me. Perhaps it might be alright on your belt but honestly, leave it at home for practicing or work desk play value.
For busking I'd recommmend something more substantial like a Pignose but this tiny amp would certainly turn heads.
The battery cover is flimsy. The construction only just supports the hardware that make up this amp. The switches wouldn't take heavy hands and I have seen some amps out there with missing flashy gold plastic caps(also on some of the MG line of Marshall amps).
All in all it's only just OK and that's only because you have to consider the price.

12 Month Warranty. (Could depend on music shop).
If you ever need support to use this amplifier, pack it up, take it back to your retailer and while your at it, take all your guitars and hock them at any nearby 2nd hand pawn shop as you honestly would have issues that go way beyond retarded.
For the price, if it breaks, getting another one should surely not worry too many guitarists.

Well I tried the MS-2 out with my Ibanez RX, my Fernandes Montery Pro with sustainer and my ESP LTD F-200.(Havn't tried it on my others yet) It was rather fun on all of those guitars.
If it were stolen, I'd probably try out the MS-4 faster and in all honest I think I'll be using them as presents at Christmas time.
It would have been nice to see a line out socket but at least you get headphone out so that can be used with care for line out into a mixer.(Handy if you want Marshall sound in a flick(without resorting to software emulations and don't get me started on those).
Overall it's a funky little novelty for the Marshall fan and will surprise you with what you can get from it. Please do note that it's a bit of a 'pail in comparison' compared with it's much older well known brothers but I do thank Marshall for bringing out a budget line of portable amps so more people can now access a bit of Marshall sound.

I bought this primarily for use in airports and traveling. It sounds like what it is - a mini amp with a very small speaker.
Now for the fun part:
It also sounds great as a preamp. Just use a stereo cable out of the headphone jack. I run it as follows:
MS-2 ==> ART Tube Mic Preamp ==> Return of a tube power amp
(I tried running it in my studio through a Carvin Legacy/5150/B-52 AT/Fender Deville)
Sounded great with all those amps. It's not a substitute for a real Marshall sound of course, but it's fun to experiment with gear :P
I tried running it on the clean channel dimed with the above setup - gives a gritty clean and the tube signal chain warms it up quite a bit. With a modded BOSS SD-1 or Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster in front, it'll basically push it into the OD channel sounds. Pushing the OD channel with a pedal, though, gives a really spongey/bassy sound... probably way too much clipping.

I hope it never gets stolen... even if it eventually breaks down and doesn't work anymore, it makes for a good bookend. This little sucker has inspired my bandmates and friends to buy me figurines of guitarists (e.g. those McFarlane Motley Crue, Kiss and some Zakk Wylde figures)... I actually bought it for the looks more than anything. It really turns heads at the airport and provides hours of fun during international flight stopovers

Marshall MS2 mini amp with 2 gain settings one clean and one very dirty, but in a good way. Volume & Tone knobs. Not a lot of features but does what it was designed to do, LOW VOLUME PRACTICE/JAMMIN. This is one hell of a J.O.C.(jam on couch) amp.

Kinda sweezley at first, comes with a sh***y battery so replace it immediately... think of the battery in the same terms as an output transformer in a tube amp, the better the battery the better the sound. I use a Panasonic heavy duty that I can get at the 99c store for, you guessed it, 99c! (and NO PRICE CHECKS!) Workin' a Les Paul, Tele and Strat during a Laker game one recent evening, I put this amp to the test in a grueling game between LA and Dallas with OVERTIME! Single coils sound the best with this amp, humbuckers tend to overwhelm it with schnozzley residue. Set the tone knob wide right and your groovin'. The Tele sounded best, rough Haggard meets Kotzen tones....NICE...(shot Kobe)......

I use it with my Ibanez Jet King 2 with HH pickups. I play classic rock, hard rock, blues rock and a little bit of metal. This amp is great for classic rock, but for metal not. It not noisy, it has a better sound than the MG series. What suprised me is that it sounds very tubey. The clean channel is bad. When you turn it over 6 or so, it gets distorted and crunchy, but some people will like that. I do. I give it an 7 because its not versatille and because the clean channel gets very easily distorted. If this amp would be for me only, ill give it a 9, but there are people who like clean and more gain and such... The tone is a bit muddy, but if you play hard rock, then its the best mini amp for you!

It is the mostest bestest incrediblest amp I've ever owned. I plan on using it at Madison Square Gardens The tone is smooth and buttery, and massive and crunchy all at the same time...c'mon!!!...It's only 1 watt!! I mostly use this little amp to clip on my belt plug my axe in and chase my beagles around the house torturing them with out of tune blues licks...stupid little music critics...they wouldn't a good blues lick if it bit them in the leg.

It has all of the basics, sound in from your guitar and sound out for your headphones. I really don't like the control knob set-up though at all. I also own the Danelectro Honeytone mini amp and that product is just streets ahead of this. The Marshall has volume (works fine), tone (barely makes a difference from 0 to 10) and then a knob giving you the choice of a clean or overdriven pre-set. It's a poor way of doing things compared to the Danelectro which has a vol/tone/drive set-up and lets you fully adjust the distortion to your liking. The Marshall really lacks that flexibility.
Sound Quality
:

Terrible, it's a cheap micro amp, but there is just no excuse for this. I can only assume the people giving high marks here have played one too many power chords and their hearing has suffered accordingly. Clean the amp seems to have a third of the volume of the overdriven setting which is p1ss poor design- surely they could boost things beyond something your hamster would consider loud to balance things up a bit? The clean sound is weak too- none of your guitars tone comes through and you might as well connect your guitar to your mobile phones speaker.
Overdriven the thing is better and can provide a pretty convincing AC/DC crunch with reasonable loudness with the volume at 5, any louder and you've still got the sounds but with enough buzzing from the plastic case over the top to thoroughly spoil the fun. So that's it- one amp with just one sound that's useable within a narrowish volume range. Yippee. The Honeytone has a great clean sound with genuine character and then a nice overdriven range from the notes just warmly breaking up with aggressive picking to full on Wolfmother buzz. No contest.

Overall- it's weak and the Danelectro equivalent p1sses all over it from a great height. It then fetches all of it's little micro-amp friends and they gather round to mock too. Take your money elsewhere and maybe Marshall will improve things for the future. The only reason you should buy one is if your amp just HAS TO HAVE "Marshall" written on it. In which case, if you've that little discernment, you get exactly what you deserve!

Made in Vietnam (wow). In terms of features, this thing is pretty lame. It has an input jack (duh), volume knob, a single tone knob, and a three-way power switch (off, on, overdrive) on the front. On the side, there's a headphone jack and an AC adaptor jack. And on the back, there's a 9V battery compartment and a belt clip. All in all, I'd say they sacrificed a lot of potential features in order to make this look like a scaled-down version of a Marshall half-stack. I wish they'd gone with smaller controls and had a real EQ. Also, some sort of analog modeling circuitry would have been nice in the current era of dirt-cheap electronics.
The belt clip is also a problem. This amp is small, but it feels rather big clipped onto a belt. It's probably the biggest thing I've ever used a belt clip with, and it pretty much needs to be worn on the hip, as otherwise a strapped on guitar will scrape against it. It's also a bit too big to fit in the accessory compartments of most hard cases (though most gig bags would be fine, I think, as there's more wiggle room).
Sound Quality
:

I'm using this with a Washburn WI64 (that's still stock; though I plan on pimping it out eventually). The sound is absolutely atrocious. The casing is plastic, and that shows in the resonance of the amp. I wish they'd used a denser, harder plastic or something, as I can only assume doing so would have had a positive effect on tone (at least in comparison to this thing). As other reviewers have said, it's a toy, and it sounds like a toy. Even through headphones, it's absolutely the worst amp sound I've ever heard, with weird bits of uneven distortion.

I'm pretty sure I would never buy another Marshall MS-2. Given the state of technology, one would think someone could come up with a tiny battery-powered amp that sounds better than this, perhaps using a flat-panel speaker (or something like what the Bose Wave Radio uses), some passable modeling circuitry, and heavier casing material. As it stands, I'm already thinking of selling this off and getting an Ampuplugnplay, which might not sound any better, but which is at least small enough to fit into a case. I'm working in a Japanese middle school as an assistant English teacher, and I help out with the guitar class once a week. I got this amp so I could use my electric guitar and still walk around to work with the students. However, this is not quite as portable as I hoped it would be, and it sounds terrible.

I dunno when this amp was made...late 90's...early 2000's? I got it as a gift the first year they came out with it. I had wanted a mini fender cuz I thought they looked cool and I didn't want to blow out my neighbors. I was a little disappointed when I opened the box to find this rather unattractive black plastic thing with a cheesy belt clip. Anyway...the features are basic: line in, headphone out, volume, tone, and two settings, normal and overdrive (NOT two channels). I'm a simple person who likes simple things. Although I can say I wish this thing had LOTS of other features (12 inch spkr, spring reverb, tremolo, tubes, effects loop, line out) if it had these things it wouldn't be a $28.00 mini amp. The two settings do provide adequate versatility for it's overall size. If you expect more, you are deluded. It has all the features required of an amplifier.
Sound Quality

With a two inch speaker, one cannot expect a lot of tonal variety. Bass response will be somewhat limited and a certain amount of brashness will be the overwhelming characteristic, but this brashness is what makes larger Marshalls so popular, especially with rock players. The tone control seems to have only a minimal effect. The obvious thing to do is to try to increase the bass response by rolling it down, but this just seems to increase the overall muddiness. The normal setting is adequately clear but lacking in volume. The overdrive setting is BRUTAL in a good way...significantly louder with great crunch and everlasting sustain. This is a Marshall amp...at it's best with all settings at 11. Great for shredding, metal, punk. Again there is a certain lack of warmth and roundness to the tone but that should be expected from a two inch speaker. A lot of people seem to have no trouble modding this amp...at this price a mistake isn't too costly...but for us simpletons who appreciate simplicity there is an easy and almost cost free way to increase the warmth, roundness and even crunch with only a minimal decrease in volume, and you don't have to turn a screw. I am reluctant to part with this info because I feel like it's the key to an entire tonal picture and an answer to what makes this the greatest mini amp on the market today. It involves a right angle plug guitar cord and a coffee can. The coffee can will take the edge off your highs and bring a rumble to your lows. Still not tonally perfect but definitely adding another dimension to the amps capabilities. You will be able to get closer to the sound of a large Marshall full out without getting evicted. Blues, classic rock, even hard jazz will sound better. Like me...totally old school. Some people have also complained about a rattling that comes from the amp. Again...no screw need be turned...just take the battery compartment lid off. Without the can I would give this a rating of 7. Great loud rock sound but pretty one dimensional. With the can it gets two more points for a total of 9. Not perfect but...for a $28.00 amp with a 2 inch spkr it comes out as a 12 compared to some larger more expensive amps!

Cons: breakable plastic, thin netting covering the speaker, loose battery compartment lid.
Pros: small, sturdy, meant to be packed tossed clipped on a belt, cheap to replace, inexpensive.
I've never had a problem with it...and the coffee can adds protection. My only concern is piercing the netting and speaker cone because this amp is so portable, packable. No worries when it's in the can!

I have been playing for almost 30 years now. I have a Danelectro Nifty Fifty, an Electar Tube 30, and a Pignose. I used to use a Fender RocPro, a Ampeg Gemini, a Fender Blues Deluxe...all good amps. The Ampeg was my favorite...never should have traded it. In my opinion Marshall made a good inexpensive portable mini amp that screams like their big amps but it's real beauty is in it's small size...small enough to fit in a coffee can to really round out the tone. The Fender mini won't fit, neither will the MS-4. Great sounds, great price! E-mail me with your thoughts.

Simple features: 2 channels, a tone knob, and a volume knob. The headphone-out is very useful for practicing. I modded this amp (more below).

I play a 1968 Gibson Goldtop and a Eric Johnson Signiture Strat. The EJ strat sounds great, but it can't hold a candle to the Gibson - I think it and the MS-2 are soulmates. I am keeping my Twin around for the strat even though I rarely touch those anymore.
I play exclusively emo rock and this little package - when mic'd - ROCKS THE HOUSE. 'Nuff said. I dial in a clean but powerful tone and then use my TC Electronics G-system for modulations.
I've never played an amp this quiet. I wouldn't even know it was on if not for the power light.
OK, now for the mods. I replaced a few of the transistor circuits and hot wired in two 6V6s that I taped to the back. I also re-wired the crappy stock 9-volt power supply to accept three D batteries. These mods upped the output to a very respectable 2 watts but made the package a bit heavier and more difficult to transport. Some scotch tape keeps it all together and it still weighs less than two pounds!
Other musicians make fun of the MS-2's size but then I plug in and rip - No one can believe the tones I can coax out of this baby. People have compared my tone to the world's greatest face shot. You want Allman Bros.' Live at the Fillmore tone? You want Angus Young? How 'bout Jimmy Page? Well this amp has got it in spades. I've sold all of my other amps: an AC30, a 1968 JTM 45, and a vintage Bassman. None of them can hold a candle to this little baby!
I've been playing for 20 years. As of 1993 my sole income is derived from gigging. I grew tired of the amp game and decided to try something different. Now I've got others reconsidering the amp game.

it's a small amp, i can't expect it too much.
only clean and overdrive, volum and tone switch.
but that's enough i think
there's a hook to hang on something, maybe yr belt, yr stripes....
it's one of the reason why i ignore the fender's micro amp
(how portable it would be without the hook??)

no bass, but that's not a 1 watt amp should expect at all..
when playing at the clean tone, nothing sucks i think
when i turned up the volume, it became a little bit distortion
when i switch to the overdrive mode, that's COOL, a much loud sound came out
and the sound was great.

great to hang around with this at home, or with yr friend.
really portable , i just hang it on the stripe and play around
i play this 2-3 hours and the battery still works well.. just a bit fading of the indicating light

basic mini amp. seems to have the same features as similar amps made by Fender, danelectro etc.
This amp has some very usable sounds for my acoustic guitar and bass guitar when DI'd into a PA system.
I know use this amp all the time, either as a practise amp on its own or DI'd into a PA when playing and practising with a band.
I wish it had a proper line out as the headphone out does cause me some problems as detailed below.
Sound Quality
:

This amp is a brilliant preamp for acoustic guitarists wanting a more punchy sound, but beware of some limitations.
I never use the OD overdrive switch as it is way too distorted for me.
I play acoustic blues, electric blues, slide and bass and I use the ms-2 as a preamp plugged directly into a PA system. I started playing guitar in the 60's so I've been around.
the ms-2 output is for stereo headphones so you cannot insert a standard mono jack all the way in. A way round this is to leave the jack slightly out of the socket but this is far from ideal. My solution is to make up a lead with a stereo jack for the ms-2 output and a mono jack for the amp input, then bridge together the 2 signal pins on the stereo jack so that the left and right headphone channels are connected as one.
I play a Simon & Patrick electro acoustic, a Seagull electro acoustic and a Westone Thunder 1A bass guitar.
The ms-2 gives a wonderfull punchy feel to the electro acoustics that you dont get with acoustic amps. I have a Marshall AS50R acoustic amp which is great for strumming along or gentle folk songs but rubbish for the blues. The ms-2 warms the sound up so that you dont notice any pizzo hiss and colours the tone so that mids come through. I wanted sounds like Elmore James and Lightning Hopkins so I bought a magnetic soundhole pickup but incredibly I found that I get a better sound by just using the pizzo bridge pickup that comes with the guitars as standard.
I set the tone to 8 for most stuff. The vol is down to just 2 for a more acoustic sound. The vol is still at 2 for slide work as you get lots of natural harmonics when playing slide anyway and I dont need any more. I move the vol up to 3 sometimes for a little more distortion.
I was amazed how good the ms-2 was for bass. I dont have a bass amp so play the bass straight into the PA. The ms-2 gives it some real character.
The only real problem with this setup is that it only works of the battery. If you use a 9volt power supply you get significant mains hum. It sounds fine through headphones or even through the little speaker but not DI'd into a PA.

Here's where the surprises begin. Through the amp's onboard speaker, the overdrive is unexpectedly crunchy, loud, and bright. The clean channel is next to useless however. The real surprise is when you run it on overdrive through a larger amp via the headphone jack. What you get is a huge, grungy fuzz reminscent of the glory days of Nirvana and Mudhoney. Just fantastic.

I use this in my living room when it's late at night and I don't want to disturb my wife or neighbors with a little shredding. I use a Gibson Les Paul Std through a Korg Pandora PX4, set the mini Marshall to it's clean setting, keep the tone at 12 o'clock, and rarely set the volume knob over 10 o'clock. For a $40 dollar, 2-watt belt-clip sidekick amp, I am VERY impressed. It does I think what it was intended to do; provide a low-output, reasonable facsimile of a "real" guitar amp. Since I use the Pandora as my pre-amp, which by the way OWNS your POD, I can't comment much on the amp's inherent tone (thay are OK, what you would expect from a speaker the size of a drink coaster), however, the MS-2 is NOT a modeling preamp, and as a result CANNOT be compared to the likes of such. Think this is going to sound like a Marshall stack? Step back, count to 10, scratch your head and take a look at this amp. It's 6 inches tall. Now decide whether or not it'll sound like a Marshall stack. BTW: I also own a JCM 900 full-stack, so I can have my cake and eat it too, just not at 3am.

I would definitely but it again if it were lost or stolen. It's an invaluable, fun little gadget - not a toy - that makes my day a little brighter every time I use it. It's just another tool I use to get the job done. Again, it might not be everything to everybody, but if you augment it with a pre-amp, or effects box, you might be surprised at the results. I just can't believe someone would compare this to a POD. They are two entirely different things. I've been playing for 25 years out of scores of different sized amps. Some of my favorite sounds have come from small, 10-watt combos. (Zeppelin, anybody?)If you think it's a "toy", then you probably don't have the capacity to play guitar and should stick to playing with Lincoln Logs.

Ok, it DOES to be fair, sound crap most of the time. I mean, it's a 2w amp though a 0.8w speaker, in a 6" plastic box. buuut, easy trick, mentioned before, but I dont think anyone mentioned the simple way to do it, rather than coupling in a second socket, if you look closely at the PCB with the headphone socket, the only thing altering the headphone signal from the speaker signal is a single resistor. if you remove this resistor, the headphones wont work. duh! but if you then replace it with a short loop of wire, you get the 8 ohm speaker output, sent as it is to the output socket. Voila, your cabinet output. Sorry anyone who really DOES use headphones, but for those loons who record with the thing, A: It sounds better recorded with an SM57 through a Marshall cab anyway, and surely you have a DI box???? if not, Behringer do a great one for ?30 called the GI100 which is a sturdy steel box with switchable 4x12 simulation. NEVER record without either that box or a microphone. Also, it sounds great if you plug a Thunderbird Bass in and switch the cab sim on an. . oh I digress. but tada! Ferret's way to ruin a good amp.

I got it second hand, real cheap. After playing a few times to test the features, it was forgotten it in a corner of my room, as it sounded real congested. Much more power on the drive channel than on the normal channel. But congested and plastic. I recently put it in my bag just before going on vacation as I had no space left in the car for a regular amp. And I hated it again, turning short my daily guitar routine. Then I added a good little 8 ohm cab after soldering a new parallel speaker output. Geeeee! Goddamn. The monster woke up... I added a footswitch to avoid sound pollution from the internal speaker, and ... I had a real BEAST on 9 volt. It scores a 9 now. Would be a 1 without the external speaker.
Sound Quality
:
10
With an external speaker, this is a 10-rated killer. I have great sounds on almost every position of the Tone and Vol knobs, for every guitar (LP, Strat, Takamine, Variax). No lengthy sound research needed. And it can be loud as hell. I just can't believe it is a 2w. It sounds like a 20w.
Jim, thanks for hidding a fantastic circuit inside this crappy plastic box.
The 2 channels complements nicely: where the first channel stops, the drive amp starts off with a real tuby sound.
I don't miss reverb: I dislike it.

Was dropped several times on the floor: still works. If you know how to re-solder or tighten the screws occasionaly, you don't need service. I surely won't play Madison Square Garden with it. OK for my room, the bungalow's sofa, the car roof, the street, the loo...

In the same category the closest amp I own is a Fender Champion 110 (also a very good amp), which I can't take everywhere and does not run on battery: so, I am totally dependable on the MS-2. With the MS-2, the cab and a Variax guitar, I can virtually play everywhere, even by walking with the MS-2 attached on the belt, get dozens of different sounds (and pre-set tunings !!!) and smile when people realizes that this box has a DEVIL inside.
Stolen? I would buy another within a week.

I bought this second hand, but I'm guessing that it was made in 2003/4. Other reviewers have discribed it in detail but basically it's a two channel amp, one channel being "clean" and the other channel overdriven by a preamp. Entirely solid state - the preamp is a single transistor type and the main amp is some IC.
Sound Quality
:
6
I'm using the MS-2 with several different guitars, both humbuckers and single coils. Turned up full there's quite a bit of hiss on both channels. The clean channel is pretty versatile as far as "clean" goes. The OD channel is chainsaw-tastic... There's no gain control, it's either clean or OD, and on OD the distortion is full on no matter what the volume control on the guitar is set to.
Reliability
:
7
For a piece of plastic it's pretty well made. Probably get scuffed up in short order among the stomp boxes though. I got this second hand, and the previous owner had lost the battery compartment cover, bent the battery terminals, and the input socket was a bit loose. A little repair work and it's worked fine since though. I would use this at a gig, but only if I had another overdrive effect as backup.

I've been playing guitar for about 15 years, other instruments for a few years before that. If it were lost/stolen I'd definately try and pick up another one again - although I'd look for the bigger MS-4 because it has a controllable gain.
I suppose that the nearest similar product would be a Honeytone amp, but I've not tried one of those. It does a damn good job for what it is, a basic solid OD - but gain control and more range on the tone control would be nice. It eats batteries but it is 9 volts so if you have a PSU use it with that. Maybe re-case it in a metal case and turn it into a stomp box?

It's got a switch labeled on, off, and drive, a separate volume knob and a tone knob. A champ has just a volume knob. Mmmm.
Headphones and 9V battery power available.
I use this just for screwing around when the real amps are too loud, it's kinda fun.

I've played this with a couple different guitars: a warmoth flat-top LPS which is sorta like an SG I guess, a telecaster, and a home-made semi-hollowbody pine guitar shaped like a rubber chicken with f-holes and a metallic-black-and-flourescent-green-fade-to-white "X" style paint job. No controls whatsoever on that beast - it's just pure fucking awesomeness. The chicken guitar has one seymour duncan "custom" pickup in the bridge and no neck pickup, the warmoth has two 59's and the tele has tele pickups.
Now that you've decided I'm crazy... the little Marshall doesn't sound bad when you crank it up, and clean it's all right, but in between it's kinda useless. You really have to go all-out with the volume here. It has a really upper-mid focused frequency response due to its 2" speaker, which means it sounds really loud when actually it isn't. It has pretty much zero bass response, but I once recorded it for a laugh with the Warmoth. I put it on its back on the floor and stuck a mic in its face, ran it through a maximizer and maxed out the bass on the eq and cut down on the mids. Then I ran it through a 90 watt power amp and a 4x12" cab and it was decent sounding but kinda sterile. Good for a laugh though, although I really should have done this with the chicken guitar.
I'd tighten the screws down a bit to stop any buzzing, I did notice some vibrational buzzing. Electrically it hums too, but only precisely positioned magnetic screws set in motion would fix that if physics serves me.
Reliability
:
7
It could easily be vaporized by accident, it's tiny and made of plastic.
However, there's not a lot to go wrong assuming it doesn't suffer any abuse.
The pcb and transistors scare me - I'd feel more comfortable fixing a hand-wired tube amp but shit, you just can't fit one of those in a box this size. Well actually Dan Torres would give it a good go...

I've been playing guitar for about 4 years and have pianos, harmonicas, recorders and bagpipes and musical toys lying around the house. Been playing something or another since I was about 6. I own enough stuff to make recordings that aren't bad enough to be laughable but aren't good enough to take seriously either.
I'd totally record this for something just for a laugh, it has a cool lo-fi tone and an amazingly ridiculously distorted solo tone, minus ungodly amounts of reverb.
Plus, it runs on batteries!
And have you ever tried hanging a Champ off your belt buckle? Well you can hang this off your belt no problem, and run and jump about and not worry about running out of cable.
I can't really take this thing seriously, it's just a toy but it's really fun.

This is a 2 channel amp. It is truly portable and runs on battery if so desired. This is the reason I have purchased this amp. It's limited in what it can do, but that's to be expected at this size.

I've tried it with a Pacifica 312 with stock pickups and my 812 stock single coils with a custom Duncan Full Shred in the bridge. It sounded as expected with my 812 guitar. The Full Shred was overkill distortion and I had to turn back the volume to get a listenable distortion tone. The 312 shined with this. Strange. The neck humbucker got some very cool blues distortion when on the distortion channel. Some of the clean sounds weren't too bad. Just for the bluesey distortion, I give this a 9 (for what it is)

For what it is, I'd give this an 8.75 You can coax some very cool tones out of this bugger but you may have to experiment (and also adapt your playing style somewhat to suit the tone). The portability is second to none. IT RUNS ON 9 VOLTS!!!!!! This amp definitely exceeded my expectations. Make no mistake, it is NOT a professional amp that any respectable musician would try to mic up though. :-) It's fun. Hook it on your belt and go man.

If it were stolen or lost, hell, I hope it gets stolen or lost.
I wish this thing had the ability to sound good.
Do not buy this amp. It is an overpriced novelty amp. You are paying for the word Marshall, for the design and for the size.
Even if you just want a battery powered amp, look elsewhere, because you will embarrass yourself having this sound in public, and torment your ears playing it alone. It is a waste of money.

2003-4 model i'm pretty sure.
1 whole watt of marshall tone crammed into a little box that almost fits into your pocket (onto my waist though). It has a clean and overdrive pedal, no footswitch (really, what were you expecting?), comes with a headphone jack though. Of course it's a solid state amp.
For bedroom practice uses it's excellent, when i attach it to an overdrive pedal, i can get all the sounds i really need. It requires a 9V battery, so it's fully portable, which is a good thing. It does the job pretty well, i wish it had a tiny bit more power though, but then marshall does have the 4 watt fullstack model (unfortunately i couldn't find a model around here :( ) and it was riddiculously cheap

I use a tiny little squier strat, i've only been playing for 2 months, but i've tried a real fender through it, and it sounds pretty similar. i play rock, blues, a bit of funk and jazz and more rock. Marshall is known for its hard rocking overdrive and tone, and this little amp delivers. it breaks up and rattles a bit at high volumes, but hey it does the job well for its size and price. it can be quiet and can be surprisingly noisy too. Clean channel starts to break up at 3/4 volume i think. however i suggest, to get the best sounds, to connect it to a pedal system (with at least overdrive) and it sounds pretty decent.

This amp battery power has lasted longer than i thought. i've had it a couple of weeks and it's still going strong. It's pretty sturdy too, i've dropped it a fair few times, carried in a bad in the rain, and really have cranked the columes at times.

only been playing 8 months, needed a new practice amp...and this was the answer. Sounds better than my squier SP-10, and is fully portable. Definitely would buy it again if stolen or lost. I love its portability, and i'm disappointed in that i didn't get the MS-4 fullstack. I chose this one over the johnson model because it had a belt clip, and marshall was known for its tone, so i decided to buy it (also, fender and other micro amps are pretty hard to get around here).

I use it with a Stratocaster guitar and I really like the way it sounds, but in the clean "channel" it gets a little bit dirty if you strum too hard, to avoid this I use a Boss ME-6 multiple effects unit to control the volume of my guitar and with it this tiny amp sounds great (for a 1 watt amp). I use it just to play in my bedroom and I think it has enough power for what I use it.

I've used this amp with a number of guitars and it sounds great for what it is -definitely a Marshall with that characteristic crunch. The tiny built-in speaker is a bit limited and I recommend you plug it into a cab. You can plug this thing into a cab from the headphone socket (you have to pull the jack out slightly to make contact) and it produces a reasonable living-room volume and great tone. It is possible to install a proper speaker output (see previous submissions by others) which should be even better. Plugged through a cab this thing sounds like a real amp and better than many a digital modeller! (and better than some "proper" marshalls I've heard!)

I just bought this 2004 model Ms-2 and yeh i love it. My styles are mostly any kinda rock whether it be somthing like Metallica or somthing like Lynard Skynard. Its Got a Volume and Tone dial and an OFF/ON/OD dial. Solid State.I gave it an 8 because of the neat clip on the back so you can hook it on your belt and the cloth grille. I mean its 2 watt so you not gonna break the windows with it but its good enough to practice with when i dont wanna haul my other marshalls around. I really wish though that it had a gain knob so i can maybe toggle with the overdrive distortion.

I use a Ibanez Fat strat copy. I really like the clean withall my pickups but the Overdrive i use only my Humbucker. On the Clean channel it sounds great all the way through except on 10 its a little fuzzy, so i keep it on 9. The OD is really loud for this little 2 watt amp. Although when you try to turn it down it doesnt really get an quieter. The distortion isnt that brutal but what do you expect for a 2 watt amp?

Im using a cheap yamaha, then every1 elses guitars too - a hohner pro, fender tele, squier strat, les paul copies, gibson les paul studio. it sounds pretty fucking awesome. to be frank, Im insane, so I use it with a modded humbucker in the bridge position, Sraight wired to the jack socket, then a Boss DS1 distortion, a Rockson Chorus, (i should get another 1 of these and use it in stereo) and a coloursound 1970s wah. Its still sounds good. I just bung it on full OD and change everything else on the pedals, and STILL it sounds good. I broke the power socket so im gonna fix that, And Im getting a Danelectro honeytone with my TG subscription so when I get that Im gonna have an amp with a socket I can easily plug into my PC for simple recording. . . this one aint too great at that using the headphone output. The speaker sounds really good though. I bent the clip so it wont stay on my guitar strap anymore but i tend to need it quite far from the guitar with a DS1 in anyway so its no issue.

10 is in consideration of pricing and the point of its existence. in comparison with a Mesa Boogie Stack, It'd get 2 or 3, but thats not something youd compare it with. Its proved to last longer than a Fender Mini Twin, And is louder, and sounds clearer. You can get a great sound any day of the week, though it does use a lot of battery power. Just use cheap but reliable batterries, Lidls or Varta are my recomendations. I think everyone should own a Mini amp! Its just the way I feel. I dont know whether the honeytones better, but it looks easier to record demos with :/ you can easily connect the headphone out to a PCs mic socket. This thing is good for anyone though. If you put a mic in front, you can get a decent PA or recording sound out of it for pub giggng or Demos. Its cheap enough to buy 2 and use them in stereo with a chorus pedal, and Effects actually sound very good with it. buy one now lol!

I've got the Danelectro "Amp In A Bag" amps, the Danelectro Honeytone, the Fender Mini Deluxe, the Fender Mini Twin, the Epiphone tweed (the only one made of real wood), and this Marshall MS-2. Of all of these, the Marshall sounds the best to me. The Mini Deluxe would be my second choice- it has a tone control that acts more like the kind of control that either boosts or scoops mids.

Well, now I have the classic Les Paul + Marshall set up. Pity the Marshall's so tiny!! But for such a tiny amp, it packs one hell of a punch! The Clean channel stays clean, right up until 9 on both pickups, but at 10 it kinda sounds more fuzzy. Ah, but the overdrive, heres where the fun begins! For a small amp, the OD channel is really, really loud. And it responds very well to the volume controls on my guitar. From hard rock distortion, to fuzz, depending on where the volume control is. This amp rocks!!

Very simple layout. Input, volume, tone, off/on/OD knob. It has a speaker that is about 3" & a headphone jack. I had to give a 7 for the cloth grill, which is a nice touch, and of course, its portability. 9V. or AC powered. No 60 cycle hum when battery powered.

Despite being in a plastic box, all solid state, with a transister radio sized speaker, amazingly it has the Marshall sound! It's close enough for rock and roll to wear the Marshall logo. I guess it puts out about 1 watt of power. It's fine with humbuckers or single coils. I find that I tend to use it more often in the "on" (or clean) setting with the volume and tone dimed. It has a kind of Plexi vibe to it. Crank the guitar volume to 10 and it's full sounding, simulating that the clean headroom you'll hear underneath that famous throaty growl. It's not overly loud on this setting either; it won't be too loud outside of the bedroom. It's very responsive in this mode to the guitar volume. As you start backing off, it gradually cleans up bit by bit becoming less compressed. It responds to pick attack as well, so with a light touch, by the time the guitar is turned down, it is much cleaner than when it's cranked. Excellent!
The OD side is a lot of fun. Much louder, with an over the top JCM 800/900 vibe. Never cleans up on this side. Even turned down below half, it doesn't respond much to volume changes on the guitar and there is no touch sensitivity. But who cares? Just turn it up. It roars and even maintains some nice sustain. It's also surprisingly articulate due to the fast transients of the solid state circuitry and the tiny speaker. It's actually rather unforgiving. The OD will make you sound bad if you're sloppy or great if you're wailing.

Well now, here is even more authenticity! Just like an old Marshall, it can be a fussy bugger. I have two of them and both tend to cut out and crackle until I get the cord set just right, or tap the face plate, or shake it, or whatever. But then again, an evening at the movies will cost you more than this amp, so what d'ya want? As indicated below, you need to put some paper or something inside the battery compartment to keep the battery in place. I tried an AC plug on it once, and it was noisy as hell. I had to unplug it. But not everyone has this problem; I may not have had the correct adapter. Battery life is pretty good, perhaps 20 hours or more.

Other than reliabilty problems, for the cost it's super. I've been playing for 30 years, I own Tophat, Fender, Rivera amps, nice guitars, and too many effects (so my bandmates tell me, but what do they know?). If it were stolen, oh well, I already have another. I'll always have one around. I've even recorded with it. It's fine for quick demos or layering it into to a guitar mix (hard pan it). Put an sm57 in front of it and go. For what it is, it couldn't be improved on without costing a whole lot more. Ultimately, now I have no excuse not to practice when away from home.

I really love this amp. I can play like a motherf*cker and I can certainly wail on this amp, it's so much to play. Part of the fun though is surprising people with an attack of rock and rizzoll with some a handsome mini-amp. So if you don't need this amp or you're not going to venture while you use it then it won't be a fantastic value for you. But I could totally understand buying one just for the novelty value.
HERE ARE SOME TIPS that I've come upon while using this amp. If you got one or you're going to get one read this!
The 9V battery cavity in the back of the unit isn't a perfect fit with 9V batteries. So be sure to fold up some paper to wedge in there to keep the battery from moving. If you don't the battery will move around, causing your amp to constantly turn off. This can save you a lot of headaches!
and...
Increase the volume you get out of this amp! Find a cable that's signal is better than guitar cables, your amp's volume will increase accordingly. Specifically I'm using a PC audio cable that has male connectors on both end. Using 1/4" adapters with the cable lets me use it with my guitar and amp - the volume is noticeably louder! I can't say if this is good or not for the amp in general, but what the hell.
Rock on, everyone.

i use a vantage strat copy with it. i seldomly use the clean channel (solely) because 1) i prefer playing songs with distortion in them, and 2) it doesn't sound that good. instead, i use a marshall drivemaster while switched on the clean channel. and if i want a feedback on cue, i use the drivemaster and the overdrive channel (which i like so much) at the same time, but it is a little bit noisy. with the guitar, i often use the neck pick-up with the tone settings set to minimum. i doubt there is another micro amp that's superior to this one.

To get Marshall, and I know this is not an English Marshall, but I never heard another amp that could do this for 35. is a must buy. You can take the earphone out plug a guitar cord in halfway and play through a high wattage amp or PA and use this as a preamp and you got a Nasty Marshall sound. Do not expect versatility only great for full on roar. They designed a really good circuit here. It is the digital age!

I'm using this with a Gibson Les Paul Studio. I crank up the volume on the LP and turn this thing all the way up and it sounds great for what it is. The 10 rating here is obviously relative to the size and purpose of the amp. I have a 30watt Marshall that I practice with but this little thing is great to take with you. The clean channel channel all the way up is my favorite setting but you'd be surprised at the distortion this thing puts out.

For what it is, I don't think you can beat it. I thought about getting the louder stack version but this thing fits right in the compartment in my case. Those of you with the LP case no what I'm talking about. I would definitely replace it if it were stolen. Compared it to the fender mini, the Marshall wins hands down. If you're looking for a mini amp, check this one out.

-Made before 2003 because that's when I bought it. They've been around for a while though.
-Versatile? I can get a sort of clean tone for blues by picking right or I can get a heavy rock type of tone by picking hard (not to say that picking hard isn't picking right). Not a whole lot in between.
-One channel but unless you push the overdrive button clean is useless. Volume and Tone controls, but it's barely audible unless you crank it on OD and put Tone above 5.
-Headphones and battery power make the amp useful.
-Solid state. I like the clean actually, it's fast and nothing gets in the way.
-No reverb but what can you expect for $30
I don't know what to rate it. It doesn't have a lot but it's got more than your Mesa-Boogie or whatever when there's no power outlet. That's why I bought it.

-I use a custom built Warmoth guitar with two Seymour Duncan 59 Model pickups in it. Solid mahogany body Les Paul Double Cut style, SG-style red finish with a maple neck and rosewood fretboard, nice wide neck with old-style thin frets. Then there's the Ibanez GRX 20. That guitar doesn't count.
-The amp is good fun for a while but it only really does two sounds. It has a semi-clean blues type of thing and a hard rock tone. They both are available with the same setting to me. Blues sounds better on the neck pickup and I can only drive the amp (really drive it) with both pickups on by playing hard. I don't want to thrash it because I can hear the solid state op-amps breaking up and the speaker farting. But it does hard classic rock distortion. Don't expect Metallica or Rammstein, you know? Not enough gain unless you use active or high-output pickups but you'd explode the amp probably.
-It's noisy for some reason when I play high notes through the built in speaker. I suspect that the speaker's range is being tested here as anything above the 12 fret on high E creates a kind of ghost buzz - a bit like ground hum. Interestingly, when I plugged it through my Rotel stereo throught the headphone socket, the buzz went away. You decide . . . I think it's the 2" speaker. Maybe a 3" speaker would do the trick?
-Clean channel is useless. Repeat - useless. If you want audible clean, put it on OD and pick kind of soft. Also helps if you turn the tone down a little.
-Distortion is brutal. Absolutely solid state harsh distortion if you completely thrash the thing. If you are a bit gentle it's not bad but it's kind of more suited to older music. Not a lot of gain, you see.
I rate it six because the "clean" i.e. picking softly on the OD channel isn't too bad. It's good fun. And it's loud enough like that. It's not exactly unbearable either, and for $30 - I'm sure some of those cheap Fender 15 watters sound worse and cost four times as much.

-Yeah, I'd totally use this at a gig for Guinea pigs or something. Pack a cage full of them and bring the house down.
-Okay, reliability is a bit iffy. It's about 6 inches tall and made of plastic in China or somewhere in the Far East. Get what I mean? I wouldn't trust it to last 40 years but it might - it's just a bunch of transistors.

-Well, this isn't about this amp in particular but another Marshall I have broke under warranty and I took it in to the repair place. After some discussion about serial numbers he said that he'd talk to Marshall about it. I've waited two months as I write this and I don't know if it's Marshall that's slow or the repair guy. Since it's a repair under warranty you can bet that it's not on the top of his list.
-This is a moot point because this little collection of transistors and a 9V battery doesn't have a warranty anyway.

-I've played guitar for two years and piano for about seven. I own the Warmoth custom guitar and the Ibanez one. Also a Fender acoustic guitar. I'm left-handed. I own a Marshall AVT20 which is not in my possesion currently and a Behringer V-Amp2. I also have a Behringer baby mixer and a Yamaha digital piano. And Spakko Munkle and a couple of guitar cases and picks and cords and slides and stuff like that.
-I hate trying to compare things in music shops because I'm left-handed. There was a Danelectro Honeytone amp and this one and this was $10 more but I don't remember what it was $10 more than.
-Bottom line is: if you don't have a power outlet, this thing is more useful and toneful than a vintage Fender Bassman. Until you run out of batteries. Then one is definitely cooler than the other. Also, sometimes you might not want an acoustic guitar sound but you want the portability. But this is why you are reading the review, n'est-ce pas? "Oui," as the French say when they mean "yes"

My guitar: strat w/ humbuckers (hot rails/little 59'er) and lotsa switches
My music style: hard rock, metal, blues
The amp ain't noisy at all.
The only sounds this amp can produce well are high gain sounds - overdrive channel and volume at maximum. It is terribly loud then for its size. If you thought you could use this amp to jam at home in the night without disturbing your neighbours, you're wrong. It is *really* loud. I wouldn't have imagined.
This little box looks like a Marshall halfstack, and this is what it wants to reproduce. Marshalls (800er, 900er) never sounded reasonable at low volume, nor would any sane person expect them to have a good clean sound. This thing here is no different: it's a little screaming bastard, and in my opinion Marshall did their job well.
I prefer to turn the volume and tone all up and then throw a cushion over it. The sound is cool. Plug a wah into it and jam your favourite Motorhead solo.. :-) This is what i can't do with my real Marshall at home. The sound is really surprisingly good!

Personally, I just wanted something to take to school and jam with. I think that cranking the clean channel all teh way up produces that awesome 60's type mellow tube distortion for playing bluesy stuff, and the OD sounds decent enough for basic hard rock. Very nice sounding.

It is an amazing little amp actually. I thought it was going to be a piece of crap toy amp when I saw it, but it works perfect and sounds great for what I use it for...just a practice amp.
If I had bought this a couple of years earlier I probably would have brought this to my guitar lessons instead of lugging that 30w around.

I would buy this one again before I'd take a chance on a more expensive one. All in all I'm happy with it.

i'm using it with a yamaha rgx 121 with h/s/h pickups.I play mostly metal and some clean sounding rock. It suits well for hard rock sound but for metal it isn't very good. The distortion channel doesn't give to much variety,it's noisy on single notes.Sounds good with powercords but soloing isn't it's best thing...u need a pedal for that. The clean channel gets slightly distorted on high volumes but i like the way it sounds.
The biggest problem is that it starts to vibrate and it gets noisy when distorted.

The sound is nice, considering the size. Usable for low volume practice. Clean distorts early. The better sound I could get from it was by turning the OverDrive on and setting both volume and tone controls at about 6. I use it with the AC adapter, so I put a piece of sponge in the battery slot, to avoid the bothering vibrations. I heard someone telling he used it for recording, but I never tried it. Don't know what year this was made in. This little thing is cool. It isn't versatile at all, but then, it's a little bitty 1 watt amp with just a volume, tone and off, on and overdrive selector knob. No one could buy a little amp like this and expect it to have anything more than it has. But, for the money and for what it is supposed to be, well.....ounce for ounce, it is a bad little booger. I just bought this to play with. It has a surprising amount of volume for the little dude that it is. I give it a 10 because it fulfills every expectation an amp like this should.

I have a Squier Affinity Strat and a JB Player Telecaster that has been hopped up by converting to string through body and Fender vintage noiseless humbucker pickups. I also play a Takamine EG230 Acoustic Electric through it. My music style is mostly rockabilly, southern rock, a little grunge and metal as well as some Christian rock, blues, country and bluegrass. The amp is surprisingly quiet when not being played. No screeching or humming. The clean channel is good at low volume but becomes distored when you turn it up...but hey, it's like maybe a 2 inch speaker man. Not a lot of variety. Distortion is awesome for such a small amp. I plugged my son's double fat strat with two humbuckers into it, and man, this little thing can crank out some heavy metal stuff.

Nothing to add to the previous reviews, but I'd like to tell you about a little modification I did to my MS-2:
I bought a switched 6.3mm jack and mounted it to the amp's side wall just above the headphone jack. Then I modified the speaker cable so that it powers the new jack, but when a plug is inserted, the built-in speaker is disconnected and the power is led to the external cabinet. Read below for the sound...

Not much to add to the previous reviews, but after I had modified my MS-2, I played a Les Paul through it while the new speaer outpt was connected to an old Vox 4x12" cabinet. A friend of mine came in and asked me about the amp I was playing ... she couldn't believe it was that little piece of plastic. And it's definitely loud enough for practice. The sound? Awesome! suprisingly, this amp sounds GOOD...
i don;t use the clean channel much cos it breaks up too easily
i use the clean channel often with a distortion pedal though and it sounds pretty good...
the overdrive is what blew my mind...as expected the sound is thin and due to the micro sized speakers...this channel sounds weak at low volumes or low tone levels but really packs a puch when you switch everything on full. however, it will sound REALLY rattty, almost unbearable. the solution? muffel the little bugger with a thick blanket!! i'm serious it does wonders to the tone...gives it a warm character and takes out the rattiness...don't muffel it too much though...add and remove layers until you find the sweet spot..haha it's an ART man...
the clean is nothing to scream about...nice bluesy tone esp when slightly covered...
the overdrive is excellent...and i'm gauging not only from a 'fun amp' perspective but an overall one... when covered just nice, coupled with the neck pickup, you can get the G&R tone down phat... no joking
i use a les paul and i must say while this amp is mediocre on the bridge pickup it totally rules on the neck..the neck pickup gives the amp the warmness tat it so sourly needs
oh and don't expect a bassy, low tone from this amp (duh...), instead, get ready for some cool classic rock tones that you nvr thought you'll hear from such a miniscule object... just use the blanket ^_^

Well lets start witht the clean. When its cranked, its slightly overdriven, its a great blues tone. thats all fine and dandy but one problem, i have no clean channel. Its actually just an overdrive channel that doesnt have much balls.
The overdrive channel is awesome, it sounds a lot like ACDC when the amp is cranked, i just put the tone on 0-5 then roll the tone knobs on my strat to 0 and use my bridge pickup and im busting out highway to hell or hail caeser just like angus and malcom.
This thing is very trebley, which i like half the time. This amp also acts sorta like a tube amp, it gets more distorted, the louder it is, the knob shouldnt be called "volume knob" it should be called the gain knob, but never the less i love this amp altho it could really use a real clean channel. the clean channel gets a 8 but the od channel gets a 10 (remember this is based on a $30 product, not $100 or more) so when its averaged it gets a.....

These little battery-powered amp's are pretty cool for ripping distortion and some bluesy type bedroom practice. I think that the little Epiphone battery amp is better for the same money- they're made of real wood, are a bit larger, and will take much abuse. Either is fine though, but stay away from the Fender version- you'll get the nearest radio station on high gain! Lastly, I really do wish they'd make one of these with reverb... For a cheap, portable amp, the sound isn't too bad. Anyone who's reviewed this and says the sound sucks deserves a slap upside the head. What do you expect, the sound of a full marshall stack? I'm using a couple different electric guitars with this, mainly just for practicing in situations where I don't want to lug my big 'ol marshall around. Clean channel tends to over drive at full volume, but doesn't sound bad. Just knock a little volume off from your guitar and it's not too shabby. Overdrive is great at the price your paying. Tends to get really fuzzy, but overall sound isn't bad.

I've been playing for about 7 years now and finally just decided I need a little amp that I could just plug into and jam with at low volumes. I looked into the Fender mini amps, the Smokey mini amp, and prehaps would have gone with one of those if the store carried them. But they had the marshall, and I don't feel disappointed I got it. If I lost it, I'd think about trying a different brand, just to see what's out there. This is a great amp for what it is: A 40 dollar, portable amp.

I modded this little practice amp to change the headphone out into a cab out. Replace one little resistor and BAM! Your driving a cab at a solid practice level. This is similar to my smokey amp now. The sound better on the clean channel when the unit is driving its internal speaker, but the OD channel pushing a cabinet is crunch city. Nice hard rock sound. Lots of fun and about the most tone you're ever going to get for about $35. I use either single coils or humbucker and they both sound good, but the neck pickup is too much bass and it gets muddy. Cleans up alright with the guitar volume. You can also really punish the front end of the clean channel with a ton of clean boost and get a different flavor of the crunch. With the "Cab out" mod I rate this little amp an 8 in the category of budget amps. Stock, I'd have to give it a 5.

:

This would be a great backup amp. Take a wall wart or a couple of extra batteries to cover your tail and you could survive the failure of your real amplifier by running this into your cab (if you mod it) and sending that to the PA. It is just a little solid state box with no stomping so it will probably survive for years.

BUT... i just tried hooking thru my pedals..then to a fender frontman (w/reverb) and then from teh fender to the mini amp.. turn on the fuzz and the noise reducer on my Zoom 505... and i get a very heavy distortion vith awesome sounding tone...but a very noisy one too...even with the noise reduction on...but not the feedback/ over accentuated sliding noise.. the really airy kindanoise that you can't really stop...but the distortion i get is AWESOME i think.

it's got volume, tone, off/on/overdrive. The "official" speaker rating is 2w, but you can put this next to pretty much any home stereo and it'll drown it out good and proper. Packs a lot more punch then it looks capable of.

I've played a couple of guitars thru it, and I couldn't tell much diff between any of them. I play mostly metal, bit of blues and other asstd shit. It's a far from ideal sound, but as a practice amp it does the job. My biggest complaint is that it vibrates horribly with the battery cover on, and even without it the plastic casing jangles around on high vol. Best to weight it with a book or something. Clean channel is almost inaudible until around 6-7, tho if you put an o/d or distortion pedal it's quite usable. o/d channel is loud tho.

As a practice amp its great, especially if you're in an apartment or something where you wanna crank the amp up but your neighbours probably won't appreciate it. As far as value for money goes, I doubt you could get more.

It actually sounds quite good if you turn everything all the way up. I find that throwing a pillow over the amp improves the sound considerably by making it sound less buzzy. Close miked, the MS-2 sounds really amazing. I usually use the MS-2 with one of my PRS's-a rather incongruous pairing.

Basic Micro-amp volume,tone,off->clean->OD
Shaped like a marshall 1/2 stack. Cute little thing.
Okay features for a mini amp but the MS-4 has variable gain and 2 speakers and the Fender Mini-twin has the same as the MS-4 except shaped like a twin reverb. Ill give it 6 against those two amps.

I use it with a Fender Cyclone and sometimes a BOSS OS-2 [dist/OD] thru the clean channel.
The clean channel is a bit quiet really a bit too clean and quiet but the OD is kind of fun. This amp is trebly with the small speaker and cabinet. With my pedal it can get very cool distortion.
Tha amps OD is a bit weak and croaky. but its okay for its sixe...it really is just a toy iu can play at school.
I found the fender min twin is a bit better but it breaks up at a decent colume with the OD cranked.

Runs on a 9V or wall wort adapter not included. Tone, Volume, and three settings: Off, On, and OD (distort). I wish it had a speaker extension jack (will give it one in a few days), but hey, it's basically a little joke you play in your bedroom.

Sounds pretty crappy. It does better than those "smoky amp" cigarette packs of crap you can get though. As another reviewer pointed out, you can get some cool sounds by placing the belt clip in actual contact with the strings, with the volume and gain all the way up. It's not real loud and not real crunchy. I've had it for probably 6 years...
Here's how you get heinous sounds though: when I first got it, I thought it sounded pretty wimpy on batteries. So I plugged it into the wall using my little sister's wall wart AC adapter from a Casio keyboard. Then it screamed! Run with the gain all the way up and the volume maxed out, I could knock it off a table with the vibrations from just the howl and feedback. A couple of years later I tried it again and it sounded wimpy. Well, I later discovered that the Casio wall wart I had used was a 12V, whereas the amp needed a 9V! This 'extra 12V power,' however bad for the circuit and speaker (?), boosted gain and the volume significantly. Rating: 10 with the 12V and 3 with the 9V. (TRY IT!)

Here is a really cool trick to try with this little amp. Turn everything up full blast and then hold the amp against the strings using the belt clip as if it were a bottle neck slide. With a little practice you can get any note to feedback forever. Its kind of like Marshalls version of the EBow!

I've had the MS-2 for about a year now. The features of course are very basic; on/off/distort switch, volume, and tone. For a tiny little 1-watt plastic amp that sells for thirty bucks, whattaya expect, reverb and tremolo? It does have a headphone jack, which is useful. If you run a line out into your regular amp from the MS-2 (keep the volume on the big amp down) you can dial in a nice overdriven sound. I play rock & roll music of various types, and I use this for practice, recording, and goofing around, and it does well on all counts.

I have a 1959 Fender Jazzmaster, a Subway strat-style, and a 1991 Rickenbacker 330. I have played all of them through this amp and gotten nifty tones. The amp is somewhat noisy with single coils, and when using the distorted it can get fairly noisy with the single coil pickups. But bear in mind this is a 1-watt practice amp made out of plastic, and I use single coil pickups, so I know what to expect. The noise never drowns out the signal.
It's ridiculous to talk about "clean" and "dirty" channels. The clean channel is useful only if you roll off your guitar volume. The distortion channel, however, is lots of fun, and the sound when the amp is turned all the way up is very inspirational to me. It reminds me of my ill-spent youth smoking pot and listening to Black Sabbath. When switched into the distortion mode and cranked up all the way, the sounds get significantly 70s-dumb-metal-mode. I have close-miked this amp and recorded with it, and you cannot tell, on tape, that it's only six inches tall. Add some reverb on mixdown, tell everyone you used a 10 foot tall stack to get that distortion, and most people would believe you. I use it to get excessively overdriven noise without the ear-busting volume. And to be truthful, it sounds better than many of the Valvestate amps I've heard.

Of course no one in their right mind would gig with this, but if I were that crazy, I probably would use it without a backup, because I'd have to be insane to use it on a gig in the first place. I haven't experienced the battery drainage problems that other people have commented on, and the battery hasn't leaked either. Every time I plug it in, it's there for me. For what it is, it's very reliable.

I've never dealt with Marshall because I've never particularly cared for Marshalls. I have better luck with Ampegs and Fenders as far as real amps go. If this broke down I wouldn't bother anyone with repairing it; I'd just get another one.

I've been playing for a ridiculous amount of time and I have lots of other gear. If this was stolen I would have to wonder about the intellect of the person stealing it, but I would buy another one right away. Of all the 1-watt practice amps I've tried, the Marshall seems to have the most character, although it seems ridiculous to apply that word to a $25 plastic practice amp. I can get some really fun sounds out of it, some of which record rather well, and it seems to me to have a better sound than the other mini-amps I've puttered around with. For what it is, which is a glorified transistor radio, it's absolutely great. I'm quite fond of this little hunk of plastic and will keep it around as long as I can.

This gets used with my gig guitars (Vester / Aria Pro II) at home so I don't have to set up all the leads / fx units etc, for teaching, or at gigs in the dressing room 'cos all my amps are onstage......
It is surprisingly loud for its' size, and the main limitations are the speaker and the battery power. Battery power just isn't enough, and it eats batteries anyway, so forget putting batteries in it and get an AC transformer to keep its' little trannies happy and well fed.
The speaker is also not up to the job; when giving it any kind if volume the speaker will distort badly to the point where the whole unit will start to vibrate and fall off the edge of the table - when I use it for teaching at low volumes it is ideal, but - AND HERE'S THE SECRET - plug in a set of decent closed-back headphones (remember those?), turn the tone and volume up to three quarters on Overdrive setting, turn your guitar all the way up and - KERRANGGG!!! Pure Marshall tone!!! It's in there - I have lined it into a PA and it sounds great, have tried it lined into a four-track and it sounds better than miking up my JCM 800.

I think it's a handy little amp. It has two channels (clean & overdrive). If you turn the volume up on the clean channel it will also distort. The powerswitch functions as a channel selector (off/clean/od). It features also an tone knob. Because of lack of room, every time I want to play my guitar at home, I have to take out my amplifier and cables and all the other stuff. But if I just fidling around a bit, or sorting out songs I don't need all that equipment. I just plug m guitar into this little buddy. The sound isn't that great, but it's good enough for the things I use it for. Because of the sort of use I gave it this rating.....

It sounds thin. I think the problem is that the speaker is so small you get no bass response. I use it with a strat, which probably doesn't help either. The clean channel cranked actually sounds better than the od channel, go figure. As far as I'm concerned this isn't really a Marshall, its a toy
