This is a brand new 'Green' Matamp GTL 120watt single channel amp head.
I wanted a straight forward no nonsense mothertrucker of an amp, with a million tonnes of TONE.
And I got it.
Eventhough Matamp can completely custom build an amp for you to suit you tastes in sound and finish, I wanted a more 'off the shelf' amp so they pulled out the blueprints and built me a GTL. However, 'off the shelf' does not mean 'ordinary' .... oh no no no.... this amp is the MOTHER of TONE.
The controls are 'voice', 'filter', 'gain', 'bass', 'treble', 'presence', and, most importantly, 'volume'.
I have the black basket weave covering with black metal corner pieces, black front panel and the infamous 'Green' badge.
The amp is switchable for 4/8/16 ohms and has a half power switch also.
All cable inputs have a brilliant locking socket which is released with a small red button st the top of each one, so no more tripping over cables and yanking them out of your amp. This is a really cool feature.
I'm giving this a 10 because it's got everything I want. OK so it doesn't have 30 switches with effects and channels and a direct line to the White House....but that's because I didn't want them.

Pay attention.
T-O-N-E spells TONE.
That's what you get when you buy a Matamp.
The clean sound is CLEAN. I won't compare it to any other manufacturers.. because that's pointless. It sounds like a clean guitar amp that has tone and balls. Summed up.
This isn't what you might call a 'high gain' amp. So, no Slayer fans will appreciate this amp unless they stick a whoop-dee-doop-dee-doo pedal infront of it. However, what you do have is a very nice amount of gain that gets better the louder you turn the amp up. And this amp goes UP and UP and UP and UP.
GTL - does this stand for 'God That's Loud' ?????
This amp is 100% perfect for me and my style of music, which I call maniac demented stoner metal rock noise. or N.N.B. (no need for a bassist). There you go. I play a 1977 Gibson SG, a 1981 Gibson Sonex and a newish Les Paul that I call 'the reject' because it sounds awful and was made on the day the guy on the production line didn't bring his glasses to work.
If you want to know what bands my playing 'takes after' (and I stress TAKE AFTER because I'm no wannabe copycat) then you can go listen to Sleep, High on Fire, and eyehategod.
Now, anyone who is familiar with the tone and sound of these bands should know what sounds this amp is capable of producing. I use a lot of bass, and ALL of the gain, and use the filter and voice dials to harshen up the mids. I keep the treble and presence right down. And there you have it. My noise.
The amp has a HUGE amount of bass, the filter dial is very nice taking it through a range of sounds, making the top end more aggressive, and adding a soft tone in the 12 o'clock position.
Did I mention the volume???
What about the tone??

This amp is made by real, skilled, top quality, highly experienced and talented human beings. They treat each one with such attention, care and love that you can almost see the lipstick marks!!
This amp is SOLID.
This amp is SOLID.
This amp is SOLID.
The way it has been built is just so impressive I cant put it into words. I have had a good look at every type of amp and manufacturer on the market. I have been using a very high quality well known amp and cabinets for a couple of years, and had always thought that their stuff was really well built and of top quality woods, and really solidly made... however, Matamp far surpasses anything I have ever seen.
This amp is SOLID.
It's a bit heavier than your average tube amp head (but that's because this isn't an average tube amp head).
The insides of the amp are a work of art.

I don't think I have ever dealth with a nicer bunch of people ANYWHERE.
I've been on the phone to Matamp quite few times to ask all sorts of things. I phoned them to ask all the questions I needed to ask in order to make sure I was going to get the right amp. We spoke about every aspect of an amp, including educating me about woods, circuits, power ratings, construction, quality, sounds and anything else I wanted to know. Jeff (who is the Guv) was extremely friendly and patient and explained everything about Matamp, who they are, what they do, and what sort of amp I was going to get. John was also really helpful and friendly and kept me clued up with the lastest developments in the factory.
As I mentioned earlier, Matamp can custom make YOUR amp to your requirements. You can choose from a whole load of coverings for your amp or cabinets. And you can go to their factory and watch your amp being built, in front of your eyes. You can try out your amp in the factory and they will fine tune it in whatever ever way you want whilst you wait, until you are happy with it. Who else does that eh? eh?
Did I mention the tone?

I've only been playing for 6 years, but have tried nearly everything out there. I've been thrown out of two guitar shops for continuosly trying stuff out and never buying anything. I've used Marshall amps and cabs, and also MesaBoogie....and have been on mission to completely satisfy my tonal needs. Now, after a lot of time, money and effort, I have found what I was looking for. In Yorkshire. Matamp.
If this amp was stolen....???
hmmmmm.....
I'd get my mate 'big dave' (who is 6ft 5) to find the person who stole it, then I would see how far I could ram my SG up the person's ar$e!!!
