I bought this Mojave Coyote head new in 2006. I use it in my home studio and it is very versatile . It has a Power Dampening system , that allows the user to reduce volume levels without a sacrifice in tone quality. This feature works great. Please see Mojave website for full specs on this amp.

I play through a Mojave speaker cabinet that has 2 - 12" Celestion blue alnico speakers. The tone is exellent ! The amp can produce from clean to really good sounding distortion. I play an Eric Johnson Strat and an 1991 CE24 PRS through it , and they both sound great !

This Coyote head was made in 2004. It is a single channel, 12 watt, EL84 cathode biased tube head. It's volume and tone knobs work in conjunction for some very nice tonal variations. It also has a mid cut switch with high and low inputs.

This is one of the best sounding EL84 amps that I have ever heard. I personally like it better than any of my past EL84 guitar amps like my Dr. Z's, Bad Cat, Gibson, Soldano, Ampeg or my Cornford even though the Cornford EL84 did have a nice special dark tone. This Mojave can be palyed clean and it can darken up with overdrive when pushing the two seperate volume/tone knobs. I like Texas style blues and it works great fot this style of playing. Very nice little amp that I would place in the category of the older Marshall tonal gualities. I also have the Mojave 2x12 cabinet which is also a great piece of equipment.

I have been playing for 30+ years and I own many different high end amps and I have owned many other types and brands. I love this Mojave Coyote amp because it is very nice sounding and very well built. I would buy another if this were stolen. I would like to try their other models if I ever get the chance, however, they are pricey so it is hard for the average player to be able to afford the luxury of owning and trying all of the different Mojave amplifiers. I feel lucky to have this one and I am glad I spent the money to give it a try. These heads now list at Mojave for $1949. I almost gave it a 9 here just because of it's high price, but after thinking about it I still gave it 10 because you all know the old saying: you get what you pay for, and compaired to the prices of all of the other high-end amps, it is within reason.

i have a guitarsenal of stuff, single coil, humbuckers, solid body, hollowbody blah blah blah etc and the coyote responds well to all of them.
i use the amp strictly in the studio and its surprisingly loud for 15watts.
also, it works real well with other amps in that it is direct and focused.
when overdubbing gtrparts. it doesn't A) wash everything out and eat up space and B)it remains present and rockin.
it cleans up real nice and it sounds great turned all the way up.
its not super gainy but it certainly doesn't mind stomp boxes in front of it.
its a great amp.

This amp is very liberating, especially coming from a lifetime of multi-channel high gain experiences.
It is responsive in a clear and detailed way. The signal flowing from fingertip to speaker to eardrum "feels" pure.
It is very light to carry and compact for cartage. that makes me happy.
2 inputs--Low Sensitivity sounds best for clean only tones, and high sensitivity for the rocker in you. guess where i park my cable?
the mid cut/emphasis switch really does it's thing well. i assume everyone reading knows what a mid cut sounds like. mid emphasis seems to allow for more of a thick and pushy sound, great for adding girth to a strat, or for taking the les paul chunk factor through the roof!
mid cut clears up a particularly warm guitar for better definition.
2 8 ohm outs and 1 16 ohm out...dunno if there is a tonal diff going 8 versus 16 cause i can only run 8 into my bogner uberkabinet, but that sounds rather CHOICE!
3 12ax7s make up the tonal shaping, and the 2 el-34s round out the power section.
12 L O U D W A T T S! and beautifully simple in it's lack of features. Play, don't tweak.
My only quibble is that i want to play this amp with all of the controls dimed for maximum tactile and sonic pleasure, and that unfortunately is way too loud for casual home practice and with the current generic preamp tubes I have it loaded with, a tad hissy with treble and tone rolled up all the way.
I intend to mullardify this bad boy ASAP!

i rotated through my gtr arsenal:
stock 95 ltd edition fender alder strat w/ rosewood neck
lindy fralin vintage hots loaded MIJ alder fotflame strat with fullerton 84 maple neck and callaham hardware
schecter CE-1 mahogany hardtail strat with JB bridge hummer/59 neck hummer
frankenstrat basswood ibanez body/carvin ebony neck with tom holmes 450 bridge hummer
I play it all stylistically, but I got this amp for the zz/vh conection! And I wasn't dissapointed!
I had the good fortune of having witnessed Vic demo the prototype for me on my first visit to the Plexi Palace, and although it was the Peacemaker I came for, I was stunned by the muscle, tonality, and flexibility of the Coyote.
I can dial in specific, gorgeous clean tones with my strats on the low sens input--a refreshing, NON fender clean. still thick and warm and responsive/bloomy like fender lovers (that includes me!) will appreciate.
The alternative clean tone can be found on the hi sens input---you know the sound Eddie gets when he rolls off the gtr volume and rakes those glassy hybrid strat/humbucker clean chords like in Women in Love and the mellow section of Aint Talking bout Love?? Yeah those clean tones!
With my mahogany hardtail/JB hummer, I can get much more punch and zip to move closer to ZZ toneworld. In fact I get more trudge through the swamp than Billy G. with my guitar!
But the "REAL" magic starts when I plug my Holmes hummer strat into the lil Co-YOTE---
backstroking those major triads on the D/G/B strings ala Unchained unleashes why I LOVE this amp and Mojaves in general;
crack open the lid of the treasure chest just right and the sparkling TONES just radiate out delightfully! rush too much and the lid will cave in! no fake preamp circuits..no harsh hashy irritants.
finesse = rewards!
don't come pick spazzing into this amp, let it breathe!!!!!!!
i would never qualify this amp's gain as BRUTAL. It is just, well... ENOUGH!
i do like to push her over the edge with an Xotic AC Booster at the moment...my pedal flavor of the month, but I like the looks of the divided by 13 switch hazel for it's A/B simultaneous outs and the gain boost AND the muted tuner output,
and i would love to try the keeley time machine boost as well...
to recap, you can dial in sweet jazzy cleans, and roll all the way through the pallates into a "contemporary" gain window--not nu-metal/death or legato shred, but classic chomp and boogie/shuffle rock. I would say that if more gain is required, get a pedal, use hotter pickups, or move up to the brother of all brown--the PEACEMAKER

MY experience with Vic has been excellent. He's a total bro as far as I'm concerned.
He took in a Plush 4000G I brought to him in horrid condition and brought it back to life. He did a retube/rebias on my egnater tol 100 without incident. He even rewired my pickups once while I was at his shop for nothing but a handshake.

I am really enjoying this amp.
I have been denting frets since my 1971 kindergarden ukelele classes growing up on Oahu (serious)!
I've been through Boogie MIIB, MIII, Triaxis/395, a Rivera TBR-1,a few sweet Fenders, some Marshall stuff, Plush, Ampeg, Yamaha DG-80, own an Egnater TOL 100 and a TOL 50 and a ton of pedals and rack stuff, and have played through and heard everything from Komets to Two Rocks to Herberts, XTC Classics, Roccafortes, Cornford, Bad Cat, Soldano, Brunetti, Bruno, THD, Orange, 5150/Triple XXX, Road King, zenterra
If you had asked me 3 years ago whether I'd prefer a multi-channel hi gainer or a single channel head, I'd without hesitation say multi.
Now I'm not so sure.......:) PS-I'd sorta LOVE a Peacmaker TOO!!!

This is a late 2002 model Coyote head that also came with a Mojave Ampworks 2x12 cabinet. It is a deceivingly simple design and layout with just 1 tone and 2 volume controls (bass and treble) and a mid-cut switch. Though simple in design, the amp is much more flexible that you would expect on first glance. Most amps have more knobs and controls than you really need, so using the Coyote is refreshing in that it actually makes a difference when you turn a knob just a little.

This is the best amp I've ever played.
I recommend anyone interested in this amp to check out the great sound clips at www.mojaveampworks.com. Victor Mason has put together an impressive set of clips that will give you a good idea of what the amp can do.
I use this amp with a variety of guitars ranging from Les Pauls to Strats to Baritone guitars with lipstick pickups. The Coyote allows the guitars to keep their signature sounds and still adds in it?s own unique character. Whereas most amps seem to produce one or two sounds, the Coyote continues to open up with new sounds that inspire. Everything from powerful clean tones, especially with the Baritone, to lightly overdriven to heavy gain, this amp really shines and covers more range than I expected.
I use the amp mostly for recording so it was important that it be as quiet as possible. Up against my Vox AC-30 and other amps in its power rating, the Coyote is far quieter than any of the others. Though it?s only rated at 12 watts, it?s a lot louder than you?d expect. It can actually be a bit shocking when you hit a chord and aren?t ready for how loud it is. In fact, most of the time I use a THD Hotplate on it so I can get the full use of the power tubes without blowing out my ears!
Something important to note is how great the Mojave 2X12 cabinet matches with the Coyote. I opted for the mixed speaker combination of a Celestion Blue and G-12H 30 speaker. That combination makes a huge difference in the tone. Before the cabinet arrived, I was running the amp through a 60?s Vox AC 30 cab and though it sounded great. It wasn?t until I used it with the Mojave 2X12 that I understood what the Coyote was really capable of. Very tight and focused sounding while having much more bass than you?d expect from a 2x12.

It would be hard to find an amp that was built of higher quality than anything from Mojave Ampworks. Top notch wiring, point-to-point construction and the highest quality components make for an amp that was built to last a lifetime. It is evident that they take pride in their work, and though I?ve only had it for a short period of time, I?ve used it extensively and it?s never given me even the slightest trouble.

Victor and the team at Mojave are great people. I've had nothing but enjoyable experiences working with them over the past few years. These guys know their amps too. It's obviously a labor of love, becuase they are happy to talk about amps and answer questions whenever I've called. I purchased this new in 2002. I prefer to be the second guitarist so i need versatility. The coyote has plenty of headroom with its twelve little watts to provide the clean sound I need. I play blues and classic rock. It's a pretty simple set up 1 tone knob 1 bass knob 1 treble knob. Has mid cut or boost. Lo or high inputs. You can a/b the inputs but truthfully I don't find that necessary to obtain the sounds I need. I play mostly smaller rock clubs and this amp is so loud I sometimes need to cover the spkr cab with a blanket. As far as the real tech info just go to mojave website, it;s all there.

My main guitar is a clapton strat. I have 5 of em but usually play blackie, it doesn't really matter there all the same. I also use a 78 lp standard w 57 classics. With the claptons I can go from pristine clean to as dirty as I care w/mid boost. The paul sounds i'm after are Betts to brits. In the 70's i used a early 70's 50 marshall with 4x12 marshall cab w/jbl twelves [yeah I wish I still had that rig} but to me the coyote does things that rig couldn't do. Sure we've come a long way with this stuff but mostly because guys like Victor fixed so many marshalls that now they have improved the whole design. so the coyote is what i'm looking for. My last amp was a maz jr 18. I liked it but it was just too noisy. the coyote is as quiet as you can imagine.

You are just flat out never gonna find any better customer service. I've had two minor problems with the amp. Both times Victor very patiently explained what I did wrong and everything was fine. I don't think Jim Marshall is gonna talk to me on the phone. The warranty I think is for a year. Who cares. I talked to Victor before I bought it and felt very comfortable with the fact that he would make sure this amp worked for me.

Been playing 30 plus years. i'm not a tech freak. I do know what I want though. In the past few years i/ve tried -maz jr 18-marshall dsl 401-music man 110 rd50- vox ac15-carr hammerhead-and the list goes on. I'm always looking but for now and for as long as I can see the coyote is working for me. The amp is so thick sounding. Real full sustain. As I said earlier I prefer to be the second guitarist in my bands. You would not believe the people who have told me that my guitar sounds awesome since i started using the coyote. One of the guys I play with uses a Dumble. He loves my coyote and wants mine. He's gonna have to buy his own. This review is all very positve for the coyote because it's exactly what I've been looking for. Versatile -clean to thick fat chords-to great sustainig lead notes. If this amp were stolen I'd buy another one in a heartbeat. I love the fact that it brings me the sounds I need. As a bonus it's very lightweight. The amp is what i hoped for in a class a point to point head. Ya ain't gonna see many of these guys on e-bay. Yes the amp is kinda pricey but you know what they always say "you get what you play for". I think the bottom line is that mojave will tell you if they have an amp that does what you want it to. That's the experience i've had.

I went to Plexi Palace and Victor was incredibly nice. We demoed the Plexi 45 and the Coyote. I went in thinking that I was interested in the Plexi 45, and all though it is a great amp, I must say that I was blown away by the Coyote. If you want Old Eddie Van Halen at a fairly (I mean fairly, because it's still loud enough to make you want a hotplate), reasonable volume, this is your head. Sounds like a cranked El34 for marshall at El84 volume. Perfect for the guy that wants to rock and can't stand the thought of plugging into a pedal to get his dirt or having buzzy preamp distortion creat the gain. Even the clean sound on the Coyote was great. Much better bass than one migh expect from two El84s. I think he uses a bigger transformer. Also, having a 4x12 with this head will let you play any gig situation. Although the sound samples are decent, they don't do this head justice. It really really kicks butt. If you want old Eddie brown power tube tone, but aren't playing the Los Angeles Forum, this is your amp.

There is no amp on the market quite like this one. There are a ton of El84 rocking amps (I know, I've heard most of them), but none that capture the vibe of a cranked Marshall superlead quite the way this one does. Plus, it's a tone lighter, quieter, and more dependable. I only think that something deserves a 10 if it is best in it's class and this is definitely that.

This is one of the first Coyotes, serial #6. I was looking for a simple, cathode biased, low power el84 head. That is exactly the description of the Coyote. Simple--only three knobs(bass volume, treble volume and tone), one mid switch and two inputs. It puts out 12 watts of el84 cathode biased power. And it is powerful. Twelve of the loudest, boldest watts you will ever hear. It accepts 16 ohm or 8 ohm cabinets. While it is not feature laden, the amp is deep sonically and extremely well thought out. Finally, something pretty original in amp design!

I am using this amp with humbuckers, single coils and P-90's. It does not have a pickup bias. Les Pauls, Strats and Teles sound good through this little monster.
At lower volumes, the sound is sweet and articulate. As you crank the interactive volume controls, you get a beautiful grind. The mid switch is very effective, adding a healthy dose of lower mids with some treble. The amp is not noisy at all, even at full volume. With a Strat, both volumes full up, high input, and tone on 7, you can get the Neil Geraldo/Pat Benatar tones. The same setting with a Les Paul is instant Jimmy Page.
Regardless of the guitar, held notes will swell into sustained, harmonic feedback. I tend to prefer the mid switch on cut, but it sounds great in either position. I am really impressed with this amp--it is certainly loud enough to gig with. The amp was designed to give you great power tube distortion at reasonable levels. It excels at that.

I use this with my original 65' Stratocaster (My baby!), and a Baker B1, (I'm changing the pickups at this time to Voodoo 59' vintage style PAF's). As mentioned above, the amp can adjust to varied sounds and can allow the user both clean and high gain colors. The interesting thing is the ability to use volume "roll off" via the guitar to clean the sound without loss of tonal quality. It acts similar to other amps I have owned in this vain, but retains more clarity. I have a diversified style and play from America to Zappa, and all point in between. I have recently taken up "chicken pick'in" and this amp allows you to capture the subtle country flavors. It's main strength is it's ability to scream. Tremendous gain characteristics "ala" Marshall and Vox. Reminds me of a cross between a JTM and an AC15. Be advised that the 12 watts has considerable punch, and this amp is loud. I use it in the house with out incident, but an "Hot Plate" will be purchased to maintain "bedroom" volume levels. As a side bar, I cranked the bass channel, turned the treble to six, placed the tone knob on 6.5, with the mid emphasis on (all in the high sensitivity channel) and got my strat to sound like AC/DC. Pretty incredible!

I have dealt with Victor Mason (Plexi Palace)and have found him to be an asset to us guitar players searching for the "Most High Tone". Victor goes out of his way to ensure that we are satisfied. He offered a money back guarantee should I not be completly satisfied with his amp. My friend Bill went to Victor's shop and Victor went out of his way to allow Bill to test and review the amp fully. This was done after shop hours and on a Saturday. Victor invested a large amount of time between us to ensure every aspect of the sale was to our liking. Excellent customer service and support!

The Blitz is clean the Coyote is Dirty, let me tell you... I'm in heaven!! I compared this unit with a Blockhead 18 watt, Bad Cat, etc.. There not close to the capability and tone (In my opinion). Tone is subjective, but if your looking for great punch, high gain, and articulation, in a small package... You have found your amp!!!

Incredible is the word to sum up this little tone monster. This all tube head has a pretty wide range of tonal possibilities without having the modern features of channel switching, effects loop, or reverb. With this amp you don't miss or need these features, the tone is all you can think about after hearing this amp. It's a 12W amp, but in a class A configuration is plenty loud for most if not all applications, and can drive a 4X12 to very loud levels.

With the high and low sensitivity inputs, channel levels for treble and bass channels, tone, and midrange controls, this amp covers Vox AC-30 to JTM-45 territory. This amp breathes and responds to pickup changes, rolling off the tone control on the guitar, effects pedals, etc. in an excellent manner. All of which open up different tonal possibilities. Of course my favorite is the treble channel wide open and bass channel at about 50% to 60% up, Holy Grail comes to mind at this point.

The coyote head has been a joy to play since day 1. This all handmade tube amp delivers delicious tones that make it hard to put the guitar down when it's time to stop for the night. I would purchase another Coyote in a heartbeat if I were to lose this one. I compared this amp to older marshalls and my bogner shiva combo. The coyote produces a beautiful and full distortion due to pre AND power amp distortion. The Shiva had more of a modern Preamp only distortion tone. I would recommend this amp for anyone who is looking for a top notch amp that produces usable distortion tones. It's not going to work for modern trash or metal tones, but that is not what this gem was deigned for. If you're looking for the vintage Vox AC-30 meets vintage marshall, this is the amp.

This is a brand new 2002 Coyote Head, Serial #CY-0009. This is a hand-built, point-to-point wired 12-watt one-channel amp (with 3 12AX7's and 2 EL84 output tubes). The front panel features are, from right to left: High Sensitivty Input, Low Sensitivity Input, Mid-empasis/Mid Cut Switch, Treble Volume, Bass Volume, Tone, Standby Switch, and Mains Switch. On the rear panel are a dedicated 16 Ohm output and two 8 Ohm outputs in parallel to allow plugging in two 16 Ohm speaker cabinets. This is a great feature, as this amp loves multiple speakers. More on that in a bit. In any event, though this amp does not have multiple channels and all kinds of bells and whistles, it will give you a panoply of sounds, most of which are controllable from the guitar.

I have two guitars that I play: a 1961 SG/Les Paul and a 2001 PRS Santana III with Voodoo PAFs. I play mostly heavy rock, blues, and classic metal and this little tone monster really delivers. I was especially blown away when plugging this through my old Marshall 4 x 12 with original 30-watt speakers. Massive CONTROLLABLE tone. This is an amp where you can roll off the volume and get a really lush and detailed clean tone, roll it up to ten and it roars. The settings I used for my two humbucker guitars was Treble Volume on 10, Bass Volume on 6 and Tone on 6, Mid Switch on Emphasis. This yielded a highly distorted tone with great complexity. Not at all shrill, as one would expect with the treble all the way up. Playing through the Low Sensitivity Input gave this same setting a less intense gain structure but took NOTHING away from the volume.
I can't get technical, but Victor Mason has a very unique pre-amp. Most amps that have 3 12AX7's--such as old Plexi Marshalls--(12AX7's are dual triodes, 2 tubes in one), split the functions of the tubes. For instance, and correct me if I am wrong, Victor, but the first tube in a Marshall splits the triodes between the two channels. This yields less gain and more noise. The Coyote uses both triodes in each of the first two 12AX7's for gain without splitting them. To make a long story short, this amp is ballsy and muscular and has almost NO noise when cranked to the max. That, to me, is the most impressive achievement. How many of us love our amps cranked, but can't stand the hum and hiss they make? With the Coyote, that is no longer a worry.
As for the tone, it can nail the Brian May sound with ease, it's also got the AC/DC sound, either by rolling back the volume, or by plugging into the Low Sensitivity Input. I was also getting a great old Leslie West tone with my Santana III and a Keeley Compressor. The best aspect of all is that if you roll back the volume even, a little bit, you change the character of the amp completely.
Now for the speakers. When I first heard the amp, I was visiting Victor in his shop in Apple Valley. I heard the Coyote in combo form and through my little Bogner 1 x 12 loaded with a G-12H. My cabinet sounded pretty darn good--certainly better than it had with other amps. Then Victor plugged the Coyote through his Marshall 4 x 12 loaded with G-12H's. WOW! Big difference. The tone was bolder and more aggressive. And even full up, the high frequencies were sweet, so the amp will not give you ear fatigue And the controllable feedback? Killer. Unfortunately, my 4 x 12 is now relegated to the garage because of 2 children and the space they take up, but I will be ordering one of his 2 x 12 cabinets. THAT will be awesome, indeed.

This is a hand-built amp and while in his shop, I had a chance to see how these tone machines are put together. Everything is soldered using old fashioned turret lugs on a solid-looking board out of what I assume is glass epoxy. Not sure about that. Chassis is a heavy gauge aluminum and tube sockets are ceramic; all wiring is with teflon coated wire. Victor also pointed out his massively oversized choke, nearly as big as other amp's output transformers. A lot of amp builders neglect to use chokes, which really smooth out the voltage and the resultant tone. This amp and it's bretheren are top-notch all the way. In short, this is an amp that will last.

Victor Mason is a wonderful man to buy anything from. He graciously came in on a Saturday, when I visited, and spent over three hours with me. He also stands behind his products as few other would.

Overall, this is an incredible amp that will please even the most discriminating player. And while 12 watts may not sound like a lot, it really packs a whallop. However, for those who want more, he makes his 30-watt Sidewinder (4 EL84's), 38-watt Plexi 45 (a JTM clone with either KT-66 or EL34 tubes), and his top-of-the-line 100-watt Peacemaker (this amp NAILS the brown sound everyone wants and features the same great preamp as the Coyote and Sidewinder amps. I really love my Coyote and can't wait to make it howl again!
