Mongotone Custom 112 Combo

Marc Pendergrast at Mongotone is a real wizard! i came across this firm when their cabinets were reviewed in guitarist magazine in 2005. I had a look at the website and noticed a marshall amp re-housed in a mongotone mahogony casing. This got me thinking. I had an old '68 silverface fander bassman - brilliant amp but well beaten up.

I asked Mongotone to rebuild the amp head into a 1x12 combo.

I spoke to Marc and sent him the amp. He listened to it - tried it out with all sorts of different cabs and spekarer combinations - and we finally settled on a lovely mahogony combo with a Celestion vintage 30 speaker. And Marc sent off to the US for a replacemnt blackface panel for the front.

Marc sent me pics of the combo during contruction - right from the pieces of wood - down to the finished article.

utterly brilliant - first class service.

The amp itself doesn't have a versatile range of sounds - it sounds like a Fender Bassman - only this one is just the best! So actually I'm going to say its really versatile!

The amp is great but in its new clothes it really lifts the sounds. the mahogony is beautiful but produces a wonderfully resonant tone. there seesm to be much more sustain, and its somehow darker, warmer. I'm not a jazz player but i can see this would really appeal to a great picker.

The amp is old but has been well serviced - Mongotone didn't do this part. But commenting on the contruction of the new case and cabinet....its just awesome. Dovetailed - solid mahogonay - beautifully laquered. The best piece of furniture I own!

I've often checked out Harmony Central before buying, but this is the first time I've ever been moved to write a review. The mongtone product and service is first class I cannot recommend it highly enough
