It's a 4x12, 300watt cab that's 16 ohms. It has a 1/4" speaker jack input as well as an XLR speaker jack input. Also has sheffield EVH model speakers spec'd to EVH's liking. I bought this used in 1998. Have been playing with it for 9 years now. I am giving this category a 9 because it doesn't come with a speaker grille on the front. I put one on and it does the trick for protecting speakers from falling mic stands and guitars

I love this cab. I had a Marshall 1960A as well as some crate 2x12 and just fell in love with this cab. My only gripe was that it used to fart out on me, but that was fixed once I put a drywall screw through the middle of the backplate to connect it to the re-inforcing 2x4. Since then, I have gotten many of compliments on the sound. I have always played heavy metal of some type through this. As of recent, mostly thrash and death metal tuned down to B. I've played Marshall Valvestates, Peavey 5150 heads, Carvin Master Tube Series Heads, Peavey Transtube Supremes, rack gear (Digitech 2101 and 2112 pre-amps into Peavey Classic 50/50 and valvestate 2002 power amps), and my current amp the Peavey Valveking VK-100. I have had nothing but compliments about the tone of this cabinet. I have also let many of musicians borrow this cab when I shared the stage with them and they were very impressed. I like it so much, that I bought a hardshell case for this to gig out with in the event that a knuckle head vocalist won't break it.

The only thing I don't like is the crummy casters. I had to replace those a bunch of times. Once I took them off for good and put the cab in a live in harshell case, that was no longer a problem. Same with the drywall screw through the back plate to fix the farting. Now everything is killer. I have never had this break down on me.

I have been playing live for about 10 years semi-professionally. I love this cab. If it were ever lost or stolen, I would definitely locate another one. I might try a few other cabs as well, but I still think this one is the best bang for the buck.

I tried the cab through a Marshall DSL50 with a BOSS SD-1 in front. Guitar is a custom Korina JEM with a Tone Zone PU in the bridge and Norton in the neck.
This cab is heavier than the Marshall 1961 slant cabs.
The tone is a little more modern. i.e. Less Brightness and upper mids. Artificial harmonics come out just fine. Palm muted riffing is tight and precise with heavy distortion. The bass on this cab is a little more emphasized than on the Marshall. With a clean sound, I think I prefer the Marshall cab with the GT12-75 speakers in it, altough it depends on the style and sound you're going for.
I like the sound. It makes the Marshall amp sound closer to a Mesa which can be good or bad.

Purchased 5150 head and Sheffield speakers combo in 2002, slanted cab, 4x6L6 tubes, and 5 or 7(can't remember, never changed)x12AX7's for the pre-amp. I think it was a '97 or '98... it's currently in the middle of a family sale to my brother. Versatile amp with several options, clean and dirty channels, foot switch, effects loop, recording outs, headphone jack. I wished it was a 5150 II, i just love independant channel eq... I used to use it for both jam practices and live gigs with my metal band. It had plenty of power.

I used my Godin G Series and my BC Rich NJ Beast mainly, though we often stuck Jacksons through it for recording. It was definately an edequate metal amp... kind of muddy I found, couldn't get that clarity I was looking for a lot of the time. Very fuzzy, like there was a beehive in there. The eq was pretty good, all sorts of sound variety. The distortion was incredible, but again, a bit muddy.

I put this thing through daily hell, and it never let out on me. I did all sorts of gigs without a backup, and it never broke down. It needed maintenence from time to time and it was noisy, but it was still pretty solid.

I've been playing for fifteen years, teaching for four. I never used this thing for teaching, too big and noisy. I use my two little Peavey Rage 158's. I loved it's big loudness, and I hated it's annoying noisiness. It was in the bargain finder... I tried stuff in a store new to see what I liked, and I really dig on the Peavey sound, especially the distortion. Overall, I definately got some use out of this amp. My brother is now getting tons of use out of it, and if I ever got into live playing again, I'd definately consider buying one.

This is mostly for all you metalheads like me. I just read a review about a Marshall 1960 cab and it really reminded me of how and why cabs are designed. The reviewer compared Marshall and Mesa cabs and how they are voiced. I'll try to be brief as this is about the 5150 cab but, think about what kind of power tubes you are using... Are they 6L6 or EL34. This is why a 1960 cab with G1275's has very little mids unless you are using an EL34 power tube. The same applies for a Mesa cab, you should be using a 6L6 for it to sound the way it was intended which has the opposite effect. Don't get me wrong, if you like your Mesa with a Marshall cab or vice versa by all means stick with it. The reason we listen to music is for its diversity and tone is relative.
I love the sound of these 1200's. I do not own a Marshall or Mesa Cab but have friends that do. Thinking about Peavey's reputation I would guess this is more like a Mesa cab since Peavey uses 6L6's most of the time. I am running EL84's however from a Mesa 20/20 or Classic 50/50 and to my ears sound great. If I wanted more low end I would use a VHT 2902 (how could you go wrong?).
I just recently compared them to a Celestion Sidewinder (a very unique sounding guitar speaker, rather flat in freq. response and true to its design-high power) and the Sheffields definitely have more bite, a crunchier sound. Of course a Parametric EQ can change all of this but the question is to what degree. What can I say, I love them (the 1200's). Great for clean to ungodly distorted. Very versatile. They cut through the mix with unbelievable clarity!!! I get a little more breakup than I would like for rythem but that is most likely the EL84's I am using.
For those getting a "fart" sound, let me tell you the cab is not without its faults. The wood is not as thick as some other cabs but if you talk to a "drummer" about wood thickness this is very subjective. Every 4-12 I have owned could stand some tweaking and the most important is driving a screw through the middle of the back to firmly connect it to the wooden 2x2 post in the middle of the cab. This will tighten up your bass greatly and assure you of no cab vibrations. Make sure all other screws are tite too! Insulation can help too.
Bottom line, I play in a Metallica tribute band (for the last 5 years) and I have received nothing but compliments on my tone. I have played numerous preamps through it and most of them sound great. I would not recommend a solid state power amp however, even my ADA Microtube 200 sounded way to harsh in the 2.5K region.

Great for the money. If I had to look for another I would shop around but this is difficult since most stores only have a few different cabs to choose from. The Celestion Vintage 30's are the hot item it would seem, but need the right head/cab combination to work with their extreme midrange honk. The Sheffield's seem to work in almost any combination and sound "totally sick" if that's what your after. I don't like the sound of a dog pissing in my ear and that is what I don't get from these. From clean to rythem to lead these sound awesome, and even more so if your into Van Halen.

This is some advice for all you that say this cabinet "farts". You need to take off the back panel and tighten EVERY screw inside of it, including the speaker screws. Then tighten the speaker jack. Before you put the back panel back on take some of that gray foam tape, the kind you use for sealing up cracks around windows with and put some on the back of the center brace inside the cab. Then tighten the back panel down good, this should take care of it. Your cabinet screws are always loosening very slowly over time, especially if you are gigging. It would be wise to check all the screws every year or couple of years depending on the amount of abuse you give it.
The cabinet itself sounds great, great for rock, metal, or clean stuff also. The sheffield 1200 speakers are really great. I play metal and classic rock on it and it will cover everything with great tone. You can really pump up the bass as deep as you want and you won't get the "farting" if you check what I said above. I use a 5150II head and a triple xxx head, I have played on other Marshall cabs, but none sounded as good and tight as this one, awesome!!

Like I said before, I wish they would have used better casters on this. I can see that these are getting chewed up and I only play out about twice a month. The wood on the inside of the cabinet looks like quality and it looks well built. I am not expecting any problems.

Ive been playing about 25 years and have been in bands for a long time. I've owned several Marshall cabinets and nothing has sounded better than this one, especially for high gain. I would definetly buy another one if this were lost or stolen. It is a great rockin' cabinet that does clean stuff real nice too. Check one out at a store along side some Marshall cabs and you will notice quite a difference.

The basic sound is great. Needs the amp to be cranked though. Sadly, it DOES fart. Noticed it at rehersials, and in studio the cab was a serious problem. It's a 16 ohm cab, and I use it correctly, plugged into the 16 ohm output with a high quality speaker cable. My eq was set: bass 5, resonance 4. So I couldn't have went overboard with the bass. The sound was a tad thin at that point allready. I was recording with professional engineer, who certainly knew what he was doing. And everytime I played palmmuted heavy riffs, the cab did undenieably, and serioulsly FART. We ended up using an old marshall cab. A muddy razor blade sound, but NO farts. Anyone that plays metal music, and is searching for a cab, should bear this in mind. Otherwise the cab sounds great! If you play more traditional rock (without palmmuting) the cab is fine. But because of the farts, I give it a 5. Unuseable for me.

Straight front 4x12 cab. Wish my cab was slanted, so the sound would shoot up towards peoples faces, and not just straight out. On slant cabs when on stage i lay it on its side so the sound goes left and right, not up/diagnol and straight. no point in that if you're up on a stage...this cabinet is loud enough, yes...

I play a style that is composed of aggressive punk rock, fast hardcore, and loud rock'n roll. I play a Hamer archtop through a 5150 head. I love this cab, it rocks. It has plenty of low end, but not too much. It's definitely not made for light distortion style of music. The other guitar player in my band has a more expensive, "better" Mesa cab. Well, I plugged into it, and the sound changed. My guitar tone went from brutal distortion to the new Blink 182's light crispy distortion. The bass rolled back, gain rolled back, when i plugged in from the 5150 cab to da Mesa. OH yeah, unlike most 5150 amp users, i use my ear. My distortion never goes higher than 3, mostly stays around 2. When using hte 5150 cab, 2 or 3 is enough distortion

This cab is great. High quality, defintion, etc, you know. I just want to say that you should all know that Sheffield speakers need ot be broken in. After playing through the speakers for a few months, the sound really imporves. If you know how to EQ you rig, you'll never clip or fart and your rig will sound great. I play mainly thrash, death, and occasionally some Zeppelin, some Deep Purple, some prog fusion stuff. I can do anything with my rig.
I play a Kramera Baretta fl404s/d (my god what a deal! Check out Kramers at musicyo.com) with EMG 81 and Fernandes Sustainer. I also play a Fernandes Raven Elite with Duncan Distortion Trembucker (also a great guitar, check it out)
My rig starts with an digitech RP2000 (so you know its versatile) into a Tubeworks 1160 Mosvalve driving the 5150 cab. This whole setup is amazingly cost efficient and good sounding. Every piece of gear I own I've searched long and hard for and gotten killer deals on. With the guitars, I've spent about $2800, thats the whole thing! I could buy ONE PRS guitar with that or ONE Mesa head and cab for that much! I laugh at you all!

Peavey 5150 straight cab built around 99' I think...It features 4 Sheffield 1200 12" Speakers ( I personally like these over the Celestion Vintage 30's, Very warm and bold sound compared to the Vintage 30's brittle sound.) 300 watts Rms @ 16ohms... This Cab is Built Tough but the Casters are pretty weak but for the price of this cab, not a problem... Very Loud!! I give this section a 9 for the versatility of the cab and price...

I play two 82'Ibanez Musicians with Stock Super 58's humbuckers and a Fender Tele with a Seymour Duncan Hot Rail in the Bridge... My main (Style) I play I guess would be considered Nu-Metal( Sevendust-Korn-Metallica ) with my band...
Personal stuff without the band would be Progressive Rock to Heavy Blues and to just plain out weird funky hip hop sh*t...
My main amp is a Mesa Boogie 3Channel Daul Rectifier Solo Head into the 5150 Cab and a Genz-Benz G-Flex 212 ported cab... I use at times alot of different effects ( from a Wha - Electro Harmonix Bassballs/Smallstone ect.. to an Akai SB1 Bass Synth and a Noise Gate)and sounds great and the speakers hold up great... I have experimented with different cabs and speakers to finally having the perfect tone for any situation....The Genz-Benz has been part of my sound for a while now and I needed a Cab that could have more highs since the Benz is Very Bottom Heavy...
Every thing I've tried was sounding good but had too many High Freq's (Marshall- to even the Boogies, I just don't like the razor sounds of Celestions.) The 5150 Cab was the perfect find... Great sounding even at very loud settings... It does not fart out as others has stated... They need to learn how to adjust their amps better...
If you don't know how to set up your amp ( WATCH YOUR IMPEDANCE / this could be a reason for the farts!!! ) then f**king up seakers and tone is what you get when it farts.. All cabs will fart out if you don't have them correctly hooked up and your amp dialed in...
The new Mesa's have a great sounding clean channel finally and this cab only makes it sound sweeter, very clean runs and a Jazzy feel when needed.....AAAAA
With brutal distortion the Mesa produces this cab handles it with ease... Yes I play Nu-Metal but I believe in Good Tone first... And this Cab is very warm and clear even with the Heavy Distortion I use with my band.... I give it a 9 for that nothing is perfect but this cab comes close...AAAAA+++++

i'll be straight up honest about my 5150. the ONLY other cabs i like more are DIEZEL or a maybe a tricked out Marshall. thats it. i play mostly metal(thrash, speed, whatever) and this cab sounds insane. the guitars i use are a 1986 GIBSON EXPLORER and a JACKSON KING V. both have hums but the jackson has a screamin deamon that is very hot and the cab sounds killer with it. i use primarily a PEAVEY TRANSTUBE SUPREME head, METAL ZONE, and a CRYBABY wah. i also on occasion use my buddy's MARSHALL VALVESTATE head without a METAL ZONE (thats a different review though). it suits my musical style very well. its not very noisy. it looks cool and sounds mean as hell. the clean sounds good with very little breakup at high volumes. the palm muting shakes my house. its great. and for those of you that say this cab "farts", its called an "EQ". adjust it.

Holy shit. this cab is bad ass. Im running a Les Paul Classic and Prs Custom 22 through an all tube Peavey Ultra Plus head into 2 5150 Straight Cabnets. The sound is absolutely huge. Even with one cabnet the sound is huge. I only took one cabnet into the studio with me and the sound was amazing. We were even thinking about taking some of the bass out of my guitar because it was covering up the bass player. I dont understand the other reviews that said that this cabnet "farts" when loud. The cab I played through was used but in good condition at Guitar Center. In their "Loud Lounge" which if you don't know is a room with big loud amps that you can crank as loud as you want, they had a Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier half-stack, and also this 5150 cab in the room. I thought "oh boy, a Triple Rectifier--I've gotta try it out". I picked out a Paul Reed Smith CE 22 and a Gibson Les Paul Classic to try the amp out with.

I put both guitars in Drop D. First I played the Mesa through the 5150 cab and WOW! I had the volume up about halfway and if you know the Mesa Triple Rectifier, that is very, very, very, loud. The cab had no problems handling the power (contrary to what some reviewers below observed). The bass was awesome and palm muting would definitely kill a small animal had it been unfortunate enough to have been nearby. After playing for awhile on the Peavey cab and adjusting the EQ knobs on the Mesa, I decided to switch to the Mesa 4x12 cab. I did and began to play--and was shocked. The sound changed completely. It sounded like the gain knob had been turned down and the bass had been turned down as well. I moved knobs and tried both guitars--truly a disappointment. I couldn't believe that the Peavey cab would be so much better than the Mesa one! But now that I think about it, that makes sense. I own a 5150 head (and a lousy Crate 4x12 soon to be replaced by the 5150 cab), and it is, in my opinion, better than the Mesa head. The people at Peavey must know what they are doing! Oh, and I also decided I will be buying a Les Paul Classic when I can afford it. I liked it better than the PRS.

I play it with a hamer phantom custom and the 5150 head and the sound is awesome. I've also just recently found the secret to the cab for playing with a lot of bass. If you're 5150 cab is rattling at all for parts with a whole lot of bass (example phaser switching octaves) take apart the back of the cab, there's a piece of wood that comes out right about in the center....put a screw through the back panel into that piece of wood and you're problems will be fixed.

I've been playing over 17 years and this rocks my world unlike any Marshall, Crate, Fender, or other Peavey amp I've ever had.

I dunno what year this cab was made. It's got 4x12 speakers and I think it's rated at 16 ohms.
It's not too heavy, and seems a bit smaller than a Marshall. The casters are acceptable, but nothing incredible. Ha ha, that guy got ripped off at $450. I got this badass for $200 dollars, and I'm picking another one up soon for $250.

It's loud.
I'm using it with the 5150 head, and I'm pretty sure this is the meant-to-be setup for that head, along with another 5150 cab. Rokkin like Dokken, biatch.
The only thing that pisses me off is the fact that the cabinet tends to fart when you have a lot of bass. Solution? Use less bass and use less resonance. Seemed to fix the problem when I was using this cab with an Ultra Plus, it still works wonders for the 5150 sound.

Beaten all to hell, and it's still good. So good that I want another. Inexpensive to boot, but I really don't think this cab is what you're looking for unless you're using it with a Peavey amplifier of some sort.

Do you really care what I have to say?
Of course not.
If you have a 5150 or Ultra Plus, buy this cabinet. If not, get a Marshall.
$200 for a 4x12 that sounds great. $200....hahahaha, you guys got shafted.

i got my 5150 last summer (99') it can handle 300 watts at 16 ohms. It has one input and an xlr output. It is not a stereo cabinet. what else could it have? It's a fricken cabinet.

This cabinet is pretty good. I play a mesa/boogie double rectifier and a hohner blonde guitar. i also use a Danelectro fab tone sometimes. This cabinet is peavy, which sucks the major shit, although this cabinet is pretty descent. I have played my friends marshall w/ my head, and my cab sounds a lot better! it is a hell of a lot more defined. playing through the marshall on clean tone sounded like I had a two year old pair of strings on my guitar. I have one problem with it. When i really crank my mesa up loud the 4 12" shefields can't handle it, and they start to fart, and sound really undefined. It pisses me off. At semi-loud volumes it sounds pretty good though. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A CABINET THAT DOESN'T SOUND LIKE SHIT AT HIGH VOLUMES THIS ISN'T THE CABINET FOR YOU. Its voiced to eddie van halens specifications too, this may be a turn off to some people. it will probably sound best with a 5150 head, considering it was voiced for it. ive also heard the 5150 head sucks the major shit too. I don't know though, I've never played it. I am selling my cabinet to either get a mesa/boogie 3/4 closed back cabinet. This cab handles 360 watts and has four 90 watt celestion speakers; It shreds. Or a recto cabinet, which is meant to be matched with the double or triple rectifier.

I picked this cab up as a replacement for my old garbage crate 4x12 when it blew. What a difference. I could use this cab forever. Lots of bass, lots of definition, handles anything and everything I throw at it. Distortion screams, clean sounds are crystal clear. I like it.
I put a Marshall JCM 900 100-watt head through it with a processor and all kinds of other crap, and it sounds great.

I bought it used but in pretty good condition. The cabinetry is solid and heavy duty; the tolex has its usual rips and tears, but what the hell. I have the same complaint about the casters as everyone else who wrote a review here. They suck. I'm going to replace them this weekend. Sonically though, I don't really worry about it blowing out or anything.

I've been playing for eight years. I would definitely buy this cabinet again unless I could afford an 800 dollar Mesa Boogie. This is by far the best cabinet I've ever heard for the money, and it actually sounds better than a lot of more expensive cabs like Marshall. Sounds a thousand times better than my old Crate cabinet. The other guitarist in my band has a 5150 cab too; he is just as happy with his as I am with mine.

300 watt 4x12 cabinet. 4 Peavey Sheffield EVH Speakers. Eddie Van Halen uses it , it's gotta be good right? Whatever. (look at my 5150 review). Not many features. It's closed-back, has an XLR and a 1/4" input. Shitty Peavey casters, replace them with generic heavy-duty hardware store brand for $4.99 a peice versus $19 for ONE peavey caster. Recessed handles.

Although i hated the 5150 amp, i LOVE this cabinet. It's not brittle like a Marshall, and it has more bass OOMPH than a Mesa/Boogie. It's cheap, too, plus it looks great.

I used it on many a gig with no problems. The finish is very easily dented, though, and the PEAVEY logo on the front actually broke once. I just took it off.

Four Sheffield? 1200 12" speakers,300 watts RMS, 16 ohms, XLR and 1/4" jacks on back. Would be nice to have a mono/stereo switch so the cabinet could be split for stereo effects or running two 5150 heads ( could run one head clean, other head dirty, each with different EQ settings ).

Sounds great. I use it with one 5150 head to play top 40 and classic rock. Sounds nice on clean and mean on dirty. I've ran an Orange 120W head through this cabinet from time to time. Sounds just as sweet!

Maybe it's just me, but I've been through two sets of casters for this cabinet. It seems to eat them alive. I finally couldn't afford the $20 per caster replacement price. Went to Meijer and bought 4 heavy duty casters in the hardware section at $5 a pop. Have not had a problem since I switched away from the 5150 factory casters. I think the 5150 caster design is flawed. The 5150 casters require a hole in the cabinet to feed the wheel pin through. The replacement casters I bought have the wheel mounted flush. (see crude caster pictures)
5150 Hardware Store __ || || -----_||_----- -------------- ( ) ( ) ---- ----
Anyway, this is hard to explain without real pictures, but imagine trying to install the above 5150 caster on the bottom of a flush cabinet?! Requires a hole to slide the wheel pin through. When the wheel is subject to being rolled over stairs, door jams, etc, this hole gets ripped to shreds and the wheel becomes "wobbly".

Moderatly friendly, not willing to consider any design flaw on anything endorsed and designed by EVH. Eddie, did you pick these casters?

I looked into EVERYTHING that I could think of before I bought this cab.. the only other ones I would consider would be a Cervin Vega (very expensive), Marshall (would be cool, if everyone and their brother didn't use one, or Mesa Boogie half-back (I hate the Celestion Vintage 30 speakers they put in the lowest priced model, and the one I would have liked to buy was going to run me over $900 bucks..
I was skeptical about this cab.. I have heard the 5150 head, and to me, it's just too noisy and bland sounding.. but I took the 5150 cab back into a try out room at the music store, and with a Jackson guitar and a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier head, I was completely blown away.. I also tried the Mesa Boogie 4x12 Recto cab, but it sounds kinda muffled compared to the Peavey and the Celestion speakers are too brittle sounding for my taste.. the Peavey has a very nice, smooth, "modern" tone

You should definetly check out this cab.. it blows the Mesa Boogies away, and it's a much better value.. Marshall would also be good, if you're looking for a cabinet with sharper highs..
