The one I had was made in 2004. Three channels, effects loop with level control, switch for tight and loose and a really nice solid feeling foot switch that I thought really added to the over all value of the amp. The clean channel is very nice almost shimmery sounding. Throw in some effects an you can get some great sounds. With that said, no one in there right mind is buying this amp for the clean channel. This is a metal beast. The amp is rated at 50 watts and delivers that and then some. It's got and open back which adds to the dynamics of the sound but does not lessen the earth shaking metal thump. I give it a 7 because there is just no happy in between with this amp.

Sound Quality : 10
When I had this amp I was using an eighties Kramer with a beefy Dimarzio pick-up. My sound tends towards metal, blues, punk sound. For me it was not a good fit because of the blues aspect of my playing. If you are a straight ahead metal or punk player you cannot go wrong with this amp. If distortion is what you are looking for this amp will not disappoint. I give it a 10 in this catagory because for what it was made for (distortion) it delivers!

Reliability : 10
The tubes are well protected and the cab is built for abuse. This is a Peavey - it will not fall apart!

Customer Support : 8
Only had to deal with them once many, many years ago ('86) and they fixed my problem. Here is my only gripe with Peavey. Warranty does not transfer! But in there favor - their gear is built to last.

Overall Rating : 8
I have been playing for 20 years. If this amp were stolen I would not buy another one but to be honest I wish I had just stuck mine in the closet rather than selling it. It would be nice to pull out every once in a while and thrash my brains out - its a great amp. I also have a 5150 which I love but for the more new-metal sound the Triple X is somewhat better - for versatility go with the 5150 - for wicked metal go with the Triple X.

Amp was made in 2005. Three channels, effects loop, reverb (quite lovely), effects send and return levels (allowing you to use the effects loop as a boost). Each channel has it's own volume and eq settings, and there is a master volume as well. I took 1 point off in this category because Peavey cheaped out on the footswitch. It should be a four button footswitch instead of a three button switch (one for each channel, and one to turn the effects loop on and off). Instead 1 footswitch switchs between the crunch and ultra channels. Dumb......dumb. I own the Triple XXX head and cab as well....and I have the same footswitch complaint there too.

Sound Quality : 10
Sounds the way my Dual Rectifier SHOULD have sounded.

I'm using one of three guitars. Either a Jackson Soloist, a Dean EVO SS, or a twin humbucker equipped Start plus. Guitar >> Bad Horsie Wah >> effects loop >> pedal board loaded with various pedals. yeah it's noisey....but not any more than any other hi gain amp. Now on to the sounds. Thsi amp has so much USEABLE gain it's sick. I'll review sounds by channel:

1) Clean: Very chimey and bell like. Doesn't distort ubtil volume is really pushed. Very sweet sound.

2) Crunch: Think marshall on steroids. Man......this channel is beautiful. Nice mid-rangey 800hz - 1.2kz peak. Tons of useable gain. I use this channel for all of my lead work, and most of my distorted rythm work.

3) Ultra - Scooped metal mayhem! Lot's of lows and highs. Too brittle sounding for lead work...although the gain is there.

OK....here's the deal. The amp sounds good with the stock Peavey Sheffiled speaker, but it sounded a little harsh to my ear. Dropped in a Celestion G12M-70 and closed the back of the cabinet up with some custom plywood.......OH MY GOD!!! This amp sounds almost as good as my XXX head running through my Genz Benz cabinet!

WARNING: If you decide to close the cabinet off be prepared to install a fan in the cabinet to avoid overheating the the unit. You can pickup a brushless 115v fan at radio shack for $20. Two screws, a soldering iron, and 5 minutes of your time and you'll be ready to rock! It's a little bit of work by closing the back of the cabinet with a piece of plywood makes a HUGE difference in the bottom end that this amp can produce.

The only sound this amp can't do well is that slightly edgey mildly over-driven tone. For that I just front the amp with a Voodoo Labs Sparkle drive (which in essence gives me 4 channels) and I'm good to go.

Reliability : 10
It's a Peavey.......built like a tank. Been gigging my Triple XXX head almost every weekend for nearly 2 years now, and never a problem.

Customer Support : 10
The website has lots of useful info, and the Forum is pretty cool tool. Otherwise, never had to deal with them.

Overall Rating : 10
Been playing about 20 years. I've owned a LOT of amps in the past 20 years, and my XXX head is the only one that I've held onto for any amount of time. That's really saying something! I'm one of the more popular cover bands in Central California. We do covers from Neil Young to Blink 182. I can pretty much nail all the sounds I need with the XXX.

Highly recommended!!

2004 Triple X 60w 1x12 Sheffield Speaker with Effects loop and three (3)-button footswitch for Channel Select and Effects loop, but none for Reverb.

Three (3) Channels - Clean, Crunch and Ultra

Russian Sovtek Tubes - Two (2) 6L6C and four (4) 12AX7's from the factory. I put in the Eurotubes EL34 for power tubes and ECC83 for the preamp section. Totally differnt amp! Well worth the $70 shipped.

I gave it a nine for features because it has no on/off for reverb.

Sound Quality : 10
I am using an EBMM Axis that sounds awesome through this amp on all channels. I have also played a Peavey Wolfgang through it (Which sounded a little hotter, but basically the same).

The Crunch channel has a very nice heavy rock tone with the gain around 2-3. The Ultra Channel set to the same gives you more gain and volume which is ideal as a lead channel. The clean is alright, but you can probably get an eq or other type of pedal to give it some life, but as far as it goes, it's an OK clean channel.

When I throttle back the volume on my guitar with the crunch channel you get some crazy blues tones! Very Nice!

Reliability : 10
Pretty solid. No issues as of yet, but if true to Peavey form this amp should be good for many years.

Customer Support : 10
Haven't had to deal with them yet. Warranty is five years which is pretty good : ) That alone is worth a 10!

Overall Rating : 10
This amp is very versitale and you can get a great rock, heavy rock and definately metal sound out of this amp.

You can fudge just about any other sound you need to play other styles, but this amp wouldn't be the amp to buy if you were looking for a solid country western or blues amp.

Great features- i dont like accutronics reverbs though- this amp needs a digital reverb like on the XXL.

60w. Loud enough for me- and our drummer builds sheds.

Great adjustable FX loop.

Sound Quality : 8
This amp kicks ass- i am being unfair with the 9 though- for really heavy stuff its a 10! This amp is evil- so evil it would make a Bible Belt preacher cry and become posessed! (and a play now and again with a worship band- when they need a bit of ROCK! to liven up the boring old bible bashers).

I give it a 8 because it isnt the best at low gain sounds- also the stock speaker sounds muddy- ive installed a CELESTION G-12 CENTURY. Wow! loud and articulate now.

Clean channel is really nice too- really sexy.

I run:

Levinson Blade RH4 (Duncans)
Levinson Blade Texas (Rio Grandes)
Epiphone Les Paul (duncans)
Peavey Wolfgang (stock pickups)
Peavey Predator Plus- old style (with Dimarzio pickups)
into--------
Dunlop High Gain Vol Pedal
Dunlop Cry Baby
MXR Zak Wylde
(misc overdrive pedal- i change this one every 5 minutes lol)
into--------
XXX
Loop--------
Award Session Solo Booster
Nobels Chorus
Wasabi Delay

What a rig! Rock! (and country etc....)

Reliability : 10
10 - its a Peavey! Tank Like. i dont really servive it- Servisol into the sockets now and again, and i check the power tubes to make sure they havent worked loose now and again- other than that fairly low maint.

2003 model, very versitle amp, i play 80s rock to metal and country blues, this amp kicks ass,3 channels clean, country blues, crunch, 80s rock brown sound, ultra, nu metal, effects loop/ level controls wich u can switch with 3 button foot switch to make a handy boost with level control how much of a boost,u can adjust with effect switch to control the boost, cool, what a good feature, u can have el 34 or 6l6s, i have el34s and to my surprise it doesnt make the clean channel sound bad, seperate eqs wich are great, resonance swithch on back, the only thing i wish it had was a better reverb.60 watts plenty for me, i record on my computer, cool looking also black and chrome, with chrome speaker, awsome

Sound Quality : 10
i use a american series strat with duncan custom custom humbucker in bridge and noisless singlecoils in neck and middle, i love that evh brown sound this makes, awsome, also has a great clean channel to my surprise, ultra gets that mettalica sounds pretty good, pretty brutal, couldnt make clean distort.

Reliability : 10

After owning the amp for almost 3 months, I'm submitting a follow up...

Sound Quality : 9
To compensate for the dry reverb, I have thrown a delay and chorus in the effects loop. The dry cleans do well for funk and Sublime type stuff. For a lot of alternative sounds I click in the delay/chorus. Overall, I'm very happy with it and have stopped fretting about the dry reverb because using the effects loops has turning out to be a better solution.

Blues - I use the Ultra channel for solos. However, putting using the Ultra channel and rolling back the guitar volume with a single coil pickup actually produces a bluesy tone that rivals my Fender Deville. With the 3 channel for solos, the effects loop, and the ability to get blues tones, this amp is really one stop shopping for a gigging amp.

As listed by others. I use this amp for gigging. Advantages: this is a nice all-in-one amp which can be run with no pedals other than the stock channel switcher. Add an effect such as phase into the loop and you've got a very simple yet versitile setup. Plus, this amp has a Master volume which many Marshall (TSL122) or Fender (Deville) don't have. For gigs, this is nice.

Sound Quality : 8
This amp has a very nice clean but lacks the reverb of a fender tube amp such as a deville. However, this amp does the high gain sounds much better. Plus, it has 2 independant high gain channels so you can do crunches and leads without pedals. This amps reverb is about 1/3 of what my Fender has. With the reverb full on, I can barely hear it with my band. My Fender reverb is usually on 4. I'd give this amp a 10 for sound if the darn verb weren't so dry.

Reliability : 10
It's a Peavey, come on.

Haven't had to call 'em.

Overall Rating : 9
Great, versitile amp with the ability to do great high gains. Lacks the liveliness of a Fender tube amp but is more flexible. If it had better reverb, I'd give it a 10.

Features : 9
60 Watt Tube- 2 6L6 power tubes (can have EL34s in sockets as well)
One 12 inch Triple XXX 30 speaker
Accutronics spring reverb
Footswitchable effects loop
3 channels: ultra, crunch and sparkling clean
Tight, medium and loose resonance control
solid construction (no rattles- sturdy cabinet)

Sound Quality : 9
The clean channel is incredibly articulate. I'm using a strat and a Les Paul with dimarzio and seymour duncans in them. The amp covers all of the bases; from jazz to classic rock to new age extra heavy distortion. This amp sounds really full and well balanced. I traded in a Fender Hot Rod Deville 2X12 for this amp. The Deville used to 'crap out or bottom out' in the lower register, but this amp lets your notes come pouring out. The 'Edge' knob allows you to dial in anything from smooth overdrive to a sound that lets harmonics come jumping out of your guitar! The only style of music this may not be the best suited for is blues. You can roll the gain down almost all of the way and you are going to get more of a Robben Ford blues rather than a Stevie Ray sound. You could throw a tube screamer in front of the clean channel and I bet it would sound great, but as far as using the amp on its own for blues, you might have to experiment.
The damping feature is very cool as well. You can tighten up the sound and get massive sustain from the thing.

Reliability : 9
The thing is build like a tank. The 60 lbs. says so! The cabinet is made out of very sturdy materials and I am quite impressed with the craftsmanship of the amp. The tube guard is a nice touch (my Peavey Delta Blues has exposed tubes)

Customer Support : 8
If you fill out the card you get a 5 year warranty. That's 2009 my friends-- well worth your 5 minutes of online typing.

Overall Rating : 10
I've been playing for 12 years- mostly blues and rock and roll. I also am the guitarist for a university's jazz ensemble and this amp will bring life to all of the gigs. I'm very pleased with my purchase and would recommend this amp to anyone who is looking for any tone from Slash to Jim Hall.

Part of the Triple xxx series of amps from Peavey. 60 watts of tube power ,3 channels effects loop with volume controls ,line out,. The amp sounds good for my style of music ; rock and blues. I find at times I could use a little more power but I use the line out to run a classic 50/50 power amp into a Marshall 4 12 cab, makes a big difference live since you can rely on the amp for sounds and the power amp for more juice if needed.

Sound Quality : 7
I use a Ibanez with Seymour Duncans ( humbuckers) and a Strat with single coils.I don't find the amp noisy and it's good at home or live. This amp can do the rock thing well or new heavy rock even blues just turn down the gain. I find the clean channel very good. I cover a wide range of music it does it all fine. My one complaint is that in a band situation I find it may get lost, so I solved this by adding a EQ, now I must say it sounds great as the EQ lets you tailor the sound much more. I use the 3 rd channel for leads an it sounds great but even the 2 nd channel is great for solos also.

Reliability : 8
I do have a backup, I wouldn't gig without one but I feel this amp is reliable but it is a tube amp so make sure you have spare tubes just in case.

Customer Support : 8
I have deal with Peavey in the past and it's been good also my dealer stands behind the products he sells no worry for me .

Overall Rating : 8
I have been playing for over 20 years. I really do like this amp, my bandmates say it sounds great as I been through tons of gear. My only complaint is the limited EQ but I added an out board EQ and this solved all my problems. I have owned a 5150 good amp but one sound and no clean channel(great amp though), a JCM Marshall sounded great but kept breaking down so I got rid of it, owned a couple Randalls good amps but very unreliable, classic 50 etc.. Overall I am quite happy with this amp and would highly recommed it . I think it sounds close to a boogie but not as pricy this coming from boogie owners I know .
