This speaker is supposed to be good for both clean and distorted tones hence the name Alltone. In general, to me it sounds like my old stock Fender speaker that came with my Twin Reverb but with some "British" crunch. It doesn't have the midrange spike of a Celestion Vintage 30. It seems a little dark, which is good for overdrive, but takes away your clean sparkle.
In my experience, I've learned that speakers don't necessarily sound good with every amp and/or cabinet. You've got to find the right match. So far I think it works best with old Fender blackface amps.
Here are some amps and cabinets I tried it with:
- Reverend Hellhound 1x12 combo (6L6 amp)
It produced smooth distorted tones. But it was too dark to create those wonderful sparkling strat-quack tones you get in positions 2 and 4 on a strat (the kind of tones you hear on Dire Straits' first album). I ended up selling the amp because it was too dark, but maybe it was the speaker's fault the whole time.
- Crate Vintage Club 50 (EL84 amp) plugged into Hellhound's speaker.
For fun, I connected the Crate amp to the Hellhound's speaker. I immediately noticed that the distortion sounded more "woody". More like classic rock tones. It was an improvement. Don't remember how it affected the clean.
- Crate Vintage Club 50 (EL84 amp)
Later, after I sold the Hellhound, I tried the alltone in the Crate amp directly. The distortion sounded crusty and harsh. That surprised me considering that the Crate sounded good when plugged into the Reverend cabinet. Maybe the Crate's cabinet was the culprit. I didn't get as much strat-quack either.
- Gibson Goldtone GA-15RV (EL84 class A amp)
I don't quite remember how it sounded. This amp tends to sound "honky", especially with its stock Celestion Vintage 30. I was hoping the speaker would tame the honkiness and add more bass. It tamed the honkiness a bit, which I'm not suprised because the Vintage 30 has a real spike at about 800Hz. It didn't really fill out the bass. Not really impressed with the speaker in this amp.
- Gibson Goldtone GA-15RV into Mesa 1x12 3/4 back cabinet.
Didn't sound special with this combination either.
- Fender Twin Reverb (6L6 amp)
Originally I had Weber California CA12 speakers in the Twin Reverb. Those are "clean" speakers, they allow me to get those great strat-quack tones mentioned earlier. But the California speakers make distortion pedals sound bland, artificial, fuzzy, unnatural. But with the Reverend, the distortion pedals sounded great. I got that nice woody crunch you hear from all those 70's hard rock bands. This speaker sounds great with the Twin Reverb. It probably would sound good with any of those old Fender amps.

Replaced old garbage in a "64 Blackface Twin (NOt original jensen).Restored the amp to close to stock with some beefier speaker and reverb cables. The Alltones are incredible, I have the best sounding Twin I've ever heard. I play a PRS Custom 22 and my main guitar John Suhr Custom T and they both sound dynamite with this setup, It's the definition of Fender Clean. Since it's a twin I have to rely on pedals for crunch and I'm using 2 Keeley modded TS-9s. The speakers respond very well and I'm thrilled for the last 2 years with this arrangement(usually I get bored within a few months). Mostly Rock in classic to the 90's but some weddings occassionally and some country from time to time

I have been patching my other combos over to the speaker in my HTRDX to compare the sound in various combos and I was floored when I tried the AVT 50. Talk about sparkle and punch ! I quickly bought one of the last ones available from Reverend and installed it last night and the tone is incredible. The gutless little speaker that comes in that amp does not do it justice. With the Alltone it rivals any of my tube amp clean tones and overdrive is delicious. I am sawing 3 or 4 inches of the back plate to make it a 3/4 closed back and it is stunning to hear. I am a happy tone junkie now !

In the right amp, one that needs sparkle, jangle with great overdrive tones, this can't be beat. I have been tweaking amps for 25 years and have owned them all at one time or another.

This is the best of 6 different speakers I ran through my HTRDX. I have been playing 25 years of Rock, Jazz and Blues and this thing is sweet. Maybe he hooked his speaker leads up backwards, I don't know. This is a great old Jensen tone that overdrives like a Celestion and a bargain if you can find them now. Joe Naylor designed this speaker and he knows his business.

Put in in a Fender HRDlx.
AllTone is a valid name since all it's tones sound like an
ice pick.
IMHO, sounds awful.

Very reliable because it's gonna sit in the box, until I can
palm it off on some tone deaf mole.

Great support, they refuse to give actual specs,
like range, SPL, Resonant Frequency, etc..
like wvery body else does.
They responded (over the phone) "it doesn't matter".
Yeah, sure.

Playing about 40 years. Mein gear ist ES335 and TwinReverb,
HRDLX and a Blues Jr., depending on the job.
Tried a Vintage 30, which had nice highs, but too middy
and w-a-y to bassy.
The el-crappo Emminence actually sounds the best,
( I hate to admit).

I consider myself lucky that I managed to get my hands on two Alltone 1250's before Reverend decided to discontinue them. When I had Earcandy build me a Buzzbomb cabinet, I sent them the two Alltones that I ordered from Reverend Direct. I used an Alltone in a 1 X 12 Combo before and was pleased with it.
I think this is great all around speaker that is more versatile than many of the other "one trick ponys" out there. It sounds great clean and distorted with just the right amount of low end chunk that doesn't get too muddy. It does a good job of imitating some vintage Jensens (I have two in my Allen amp)

No problems - I normally play with my Decatone Master volume on around 5-6, but I have cranked it up to around 10 and the speakers hold up (in true Soldano fashion the knobs go to 11!)

Dunno - Haven't needed it. They were shipped with a customer return form if I wasn't satisfied when I received them. I haven't heard anything bad about Reverend. My only complaint is that they discontinued the speaker.

Replacing a POS Celestion Rocket 50 in my Traynor YCV20.
After break in sounds much better and louder than the above mentioned POS. I play an American Series Strat mostly but own an Agile ash dlx 2800 w/alnico hums and an Oscar Schmidt OE30. The Strat w/ the Delta Tone P/U system yeilds an awesome variety of tones. Clean to crunch and scream. This speaker does it all.

My style is classic rock, blues, pop.....the general all around thang. Used many speakers over the years.....EV12L, celestions of every kind including V30, (ugh!) jensen, etc etc. I like the All-tone better than all of them. Remarks such as the speaker sounds lousy with distortiion like i read in another review just leave me shaking my head ! When there are a ton of reviews praising the tone WITH distortion, wouldn't you question your own ears if you are the only one saying that! Think about it! In any case, i find them great for both clean and distortion. Haven't even thought about trying speakers since i got these, which by the way has been about 3 or 4 years now.

Gotta give a 10 here because in 3 or 4 years of use i haven't even considered trying other speakers. If you knew me and my gear buying habits and turnover rate you realize thats actually quite amazing !
been playing around 35 years. if it were stolen i think i'd pass on extreme violence like many others here and simply buy another. I don't think going to jail for life for a speaker is a good idea. :)

Alltone 1250 guitar speaker by Reverend. made in USA product from Michigan. What kind of features can you list for a bloody speaker? Um, big magnet. Um, solid. Ayuh, pretty heavy. For what it is (a speaker) I have to give it 10, I guess -- all the bits are there.

I play blues, classic rock, folk rock, some country and contemporary Christian. This was bought for my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe Limited Edition amp, to replace the Jensen C12N that came with it. I wasn't happy with the Jensen, although I guess it is a step up from the stock Eminence that comes in the un-limited edition! Part of that problem is the amp, and its mid range tones and tendency towards early break up. I was hoping to tighten things up and clean up the sound a bit, and this speaker does it in spades. No mush or mud in the middle - sparkling, chimey highs and a tight bottom. I've played a Tele, Strat and Ric through this with the Alltone and the tone is simply awesome. Full, rich, every note and string is clear.

Don't know, but it seemed like it was heavier than the Jensen. It appears to be a very solid, well-built, high-quality speaker. And according to Reverend, the more you play it, the better it sounds... and I'd say that is true.

I emailed the company asking if this speaker would give me the sound and tone I wanted. I received an answer a couple of hours later from the company's owner and he was honest. He told me exactly what it would do, and what it probably wouldn't do. He told me to try if for a couple of weeks, and if it didn't give me the sound I was looking for, send it back for a refund. And ... he went on to suggest some other speaker options, from other companies, in the event I wasn't happy with the Alltone. That is what I call great customer service and honesty. I was truly impressed. I'd give Reverend a 15 it the rating was available.

This spoeaker will work miracles for any Hot Rod series amp, and at $59, it is a bargain. I would gladly pay two or three times that for what this speaker does. What's best, is you are not stuck with it if you don't like it -- ship it back within 14 days for a refund. All I can say is "Wow!" The difference in tone is that huge.
