I think this amp is a 97 model,I purchased mine with the single 12 extension cab.I play electric slide guitar and lap steel as well as regular electric styles.I do sessions and play with a couple of solo artist/singer songwriters.A lot of what i do is texture-based,I would not call myself a virtuoso soloist or anything,i get called for a particular mood or vibe i can add. This amp has two channels, channel two is cleaner with an american sound, and channel one is more british/hot rodded hi gain.I use the cleaner channel for lap steel stuff to try to emulate the sound of a pedal steel with a volume pedal, and the other channel does the slide and electric duties. The two channels are very different and it really helps me define my tones. There is a gain boost (preamp gain)on channel one which I step on occasionally if i want to take things way over the top, seems set up reasonably well to me,as far as level and drive amount is concerned, and channel two has the ninja boost(a dramatic volume boost). This option I haven't used yet,It hasn't come up,but a couple of guitars I have have humbuckers that are wired to split coils,to me these splittable pickups are handy, but the output level is always too low going back and forth,I think the ninja boost may come in handy in certain situations,I'll let you know. The two channels are switchable,as well as the boosts. The amp has an effects loop with variable send and return levels,I haven't used the loop yet,but i did read on a pedal steel web page that running your volume pedal in the effects loop is the best thing you could ever do for your sound,i'll try it and get back to you about it.I gig with this amp, and it has enough power for me, so far, sometime i'll take that extension cab out and see if it makes a huge difference.I like the amp a lot,the eq's on each channel are quite broad, there's a bright and notch pull pot on channel 2,plus a vintage/modern(triode/pentode) switch on the back which gives you the option of a brighter, cleaner preamp sound,or a darker sound that breaks up a little earlier-this sound will probably come in handy on recordings.
vintage/modern(triode/pentode)switch in the back

I use quite a number of guitars and lap steels,i have quite an assortment of weird old japanese guitars,as well as a custom built tele and a prs,and it's easy to get a great tone out of it no matter what is plugged into it,it suits my style of music,i don't go for a real over the top metal sound,i like to set an amp up so if I play hard,it breaks up,if i back off, it gets cleaner. The amp can make a lot of sounds, yet it is simple to use,get your tone and play. The clean channel stays quite clean,I run master around 9-10 and gain between 4-6 and it delivers the tone i like. The dirty channel gets real distorted, but I think a metal guy might not go for it,but a jazz/fusion guy would probably love the more gainy tones, they're smooth.

I held off writing anything about the amp until I took it on the road, just to see how it behaved. This is my first high end tube amp,and a tour across canada seemed to be the perfect acid test.Through rain, snow etc.it behaved just great,I didn't have a backup amp, although I took my morley jd10 preamp w/speaker simulator in case of emergency.I'm glad I got hooked up to harmony central, because it really prepared me for what may happen with tube gear on the road.I had spare preamp tubes, spare matched output tubes, spare fuses,a mag lite, screwdriver etc.and it was a good thing, because by the time i hit toronto, one of my output tubes failed.I got in there, replaced the fuse, changed tubes, fired it up and haven't had a problem since. However ,I am seriously thinking about a good power conditioner, wiring in a lot of clubs is questionable at the best of times,i believe a power surge was responsible for the tube failure. This is stuff folks with solid state gear don't have to deal with,i guess.

I've been playing 16 years and I have a Fender pro jr. that is great for recording/small gigs as well as several nice pedals in my pedal board(carl martin comp/limiter,ernie ball mono volume, boss od-1,prescription experience,t.c. eq,voodoo lab tremolo, etc.)yes i would buy it again, the tone really works for me,it's easy to lug around,it looks great,it's loud enough, too.I've checked out a lot of gear, and I realize that one amp can't do it all,I'd like to have a few more nice tube amps in the classic configurations(6v6,6l6,4 el84's)but at the moment, this is all i can afford to have.I think it is one of the best sounding of it's type out there.

This is an addendum to an earlier review. I've had the channel boost mods added by Rivera. This is a frustrating amp in many ways: a clean set of sounds that kills, a distortion that drives me crazy. The Rivera mod involves adding controls for the amount of boost on each channel. I was hoping for a controllable VOLUME boost for the Marshall voiced channel, but this isn't the mod for that. Works great on the Ninja boost, though.

:No Opinion
Iuse this with everything, mostly humbuckers or single hum combo guitars. The mods help, but there was no actual controllable volume boost added to the high gain channel. I wanted to have a solo volume jump added, as on the Ninja channel mod, but the dirty channel mod is more for controllable gain.

I think this a recent model Jake; sold as new, it nevertheless had older Chinese made tubes in all but its V1 preamp position. Other people have gone on about the details, so I won't bore you with them.

I have two PRS guitars and a modded Hamer Daytona that I play. This amp is strongly suited for anything short of extreme heavy metal and does a terrific job with the sort of blues/country/pop/rock that I play in bands. The strength of this amp is in its clean tone; it does a walloping, fat, in your face fender tone, like an old blackface on steroids. Oddly, I'm having trouble dialing in a very useable distorted tone, but I've been used to the effortless over the top tones of Mesas for some time now. I prefer the Ninja boost for my clean sound; at 6 or so you begin to get this fine blues distortion; when you really hit the strings you get a Fendery power chord, but when you pick gently it's clean as a whistle. The distortion isn't in the Mesa ballpark at all, but it's fine for almost any sort of hard rock you'd want to play, from Son Volt or Tom Petty to Michael Schenker and Temple of the Dog.

I've had no real problems. I'd gig without a backup with this.

Very useful customer service. I needed some help troubleshooting a microphonic tube and got it without a problem. I also got one of the famous personal e mails from Paul.

Overall a good amp, though possibly overpriced at list. I replaced the Chinese preamp bottles with some NOS Phillips and GE tubes because of the microphomics problem I alluded to. Mesas pack a great bang for the buck, but this is a different texture, with clean and moderate distortions to die for. This amp is right in the ballpark of the Maverick or some of the old Fender classics, really well suited for expressive rock (think Tom Petty or Melissa Etheridge)and blues. Get a Recto or a Rivera Bonehead if you want wall crushing gain. I wish that this amp had some way to set the amount of boost on the channel boosts. The ninja boost is just a tad too hot to use as a lead preset when I get a great clean tone, and the high gain boost just isn't quite PRONOUNCED enough.

Will not bore you to death about features.(enuf info in previous reviews) I will say that the amp has everything I personally need. I'm kind of a minimalist when it comes to equipment, and this amp has allowed me to travel and gig extremely light. Whatever features are included all work well...I do really like the Modern/Vintage switch, which kicks the amp from full to half power, and at the same time "darkens" the overall tone, producing "rounder" sounds...when I gig, my stage volume is never very loud (sound reinforcement is wonderful, ain't it?), and the Modern/Vintage option works to my advantage in this situation, since I have no problem being heard...and it's like having two different amps at my disposal. I'm not really concerned about the effects loop...I DO run delay and chorus pedals through it, but i rarely kick 'em on, so i can't really judge the quality...i just know that my tone is not affected in any negative way, so i guess the loop is pretty transparent. All in all, I'm very satisfied with the features.

I'm plugging either a MusicMan Axis Sport (S-S-H), or a '78 Standard Strat (with stock p/u's) into this baby...both sound great for what i play (Blues, Hi-energy Fusion, Rock, & Jazz). Now, I DON'T know what the heck a tweed sound, or black or silver-face sound, or Marshall sound really is, because I've never owned any of this equipment. The only REAL amp I've ever played on previously was an original Boogie S.O.B. (No channel-switching, no reverb, just a lot of Mesa tone, noisy as heck, but sure was sweet), which i drove out to Petaluma, Ca. to pick up back in '83. Finally 86'd the old SOB this year, and went through about 4 or 5 amps in the space of 2 weeks, gigging with every amp i bought and returning it the day after the gig...until i got this Rivera. First tune the band played, I was hooked. The bass player commented that for the first time since we'd been performing together, he was able to actually to hear everything i was doing on stage...in other words, the amp was cutting through like crazy...not volume wise, it's just that the tone was holding it's own, not getting drowned in the mix...both rhythm and solos, i was getting heard, and it was FAT! Clean channel is sooo crystal clear (yet very warm), even if i crunch it (i play with the boost on, using guitar olume control to clean up or crunch), and the drive channel is KILLER...never been able to achieve such sustain and overdrive (with great tone and definition), without the aid of pedals or whatever. As i stated earlier, now i rarely use effects (did i mention the excellent reverb?), and i have donated my distortion, sustain, and overdrive pedals to other guitar players...i just don't need 'em anymore. The amp is very versatile...the mid control on the drive channel is really the key to various tones. Tweaking this knob (with some fiddling with the bass and treble, naturally), can give me everything from smooth fusion overdrive to some scooped moderate metal distortion (i dunno if this baby will do extreme metal tones...i think it will if the gain and volume controls are pushed, but I ain't gonna be the one to tell ya, 'cause this pup is LOUD!...3 on the drive channel Master volume was enuf to get a dirty look from one club owner). Again, I'm not going to compare this amp to others...for one thing I don't really think i've really heard other amps (Most of the guitar players i've ever watched had an array of pedals and effects, and while they were playing, there were a whole lot of little LED's lit up around 'em, so i think the sound was more or less enhanced...). This Rivera sounds excellent all by it's little self...I would not hesitate to play a gig armed with just this amp and a guitar. Relatively quiet...only problem was a rattling output tube, (which was only really noticeable during more subdued tunes). The amp received compliments from one sound guy at a club i play at frequently in West L.A...he's heard most of the amps i test drove recently, and commented that this was the best amp he's heard lately, period.

Only have had it for 3 weeks. won't give it a premature judgement, as it was in pretty bad shape for a "new" amp when i got it. (Bought it at Guitar Center, and it was pretty well "shop worn"). In the process of cleaning and repairing the tears, tightening loose screws, etc., I was able to surmise that overall, this is a pretty sturdy amp, well constructed. Yeah, i would, and do, gig without a back-up (i figure that if this amp took a dump during a gig, i doubt i'd be in the mood to care how the heck i sounded for the rest of the gig, anyway...)

Rivera Research is a great outfit to deal with. Very helpful (both on the phone and over e-mail). Polite, and efficient...Paul Rivera personally answered my e-mail. As mentioned before, i had a problem with rattling power tubes. After a phone call or two, i had replacement tubes in my possession within a few days. I even received a phone call from Rivera making sure that the problem had been taken care of. Customer service and support like this is a rarity...it's refreshing to have a sense of security with this kind of product.

I've been playing guitar for a "few" years now, haven't owned a whole lot of equipment. I buy carefully...i'll try tons of equipment but when i settle on something, i'll keep it until it dies. I've settled on the Rivera. The only thing I hate about it is that i couldn't afford to buy another one. This is one great sounding piece of equipment, backed by excellent service. Oh yeah, forgot to mention one thing...even when i set up the controls "wrong" (different would be a better word), this amp still sounded great. Hard to get a bad tone. This makes it worth the price in itself.

This amp was sold to me by River because guitar center sucked big time and tried to sell me a used Jake as new! very very nice people at Rivera I can't say enough! manufactured the last week of September 1999. Let me start off by saying this is hands down the most versatile
best sounding amp on the planet!! who needs Bogner and Boogie? Hype! and whoever else! 55 Watts of pure Tone!! Fender to Marshall and beyond! way beyond! 2 channels, channel 1 is a Monster! can you say GAIN boys and girls? channel 2 has the most beautiful clean Fender sound I have ever heard! Amp has EL-34 power tubes, the best tone bottles on earth! better sounding than 6L6's, 84's 6V6's, 5881's!
although I do like the KT66's. Amp has a serial effects loop - Bummer!
direct out - that can be run DI into a board, and the coolest Variac I've encountered! a vintage/modern switch that reduces the power by 1/3 which really darkens/fattens up the sound! Hola cow!!! mucho thumbs up!!!
Sound Quality
:10
If you have the cash, forget the Bogners, Boogies and Soldanos because this is the best sounding combo (they also make the Rake head) I have ever had!! I've had Boogies - Blue Angel, Dual Rectifier and Single Rectifier and a Soldano HR-50+ and various Fender and Marshall varieties but this blows them all away!! I play a Zion with EMG'S, 85,
SLV-SLV (AN INCREDIBLE GUITAR!!) The Fendery cleans and bluesy drives of channel 1 are absolutely stunning! channel 2 is all Balls! from a clean 45 to an 800 and beyond. Distortion is Smooth and FAT! not like Boogies that sound like glass shattering or fingernails on the chalkboard! and have to be EQ'D to death through the board!
True Hammond tube spring reverb! Can you say Dick Dale?? this is
the best reverb on the planet also!! and the vintage/modern switch is
to die for! makes everything richer and fatter like a krispy kreme
doughnut!! This is the real deal! what I have been searching for, for the longest time!! every sound you would ever want is here and more!
something that really shines is the EQ, the knobs really do something!
you can really dial in some great tone! the only thing that I didn't like was the serial effects loop! but I guess nothing is perfect! kudo's to Rivera for making the coolest sounding amps in the world!

The features are pretty well covered in other reviews. Channel one is British voiced(..Marshall) with a foot switchable gain boost. Channel two is classic US (..Fender) with a Ninja boost to get a higher gain lead level--either lots o'clean or good old Fender type distortion depending on settings. 6-spring Hammond tube driven reverb, effects loop with send and return levels, and a modern/vintage switch (actually drops power and changes tonal characteristics of the amp.

I almost have too many guitars: A Chandler 555, Mexi-Telecaster with a Van Zandt bridge PU, Music Man Axis Sport, Gibson The Paul with Fralin humbuckers, a couple of home brew guitars with a variety of Fralin and Van Zandt pickups. The reason I bought the Jake Studio Combo: I have been drooling over the Rivera line-up for over a year. They seemed to be the most flexible combo amplifier that I have found, without being overly heavy(weight and sound). I compared the Jake to a Rivera 55-12 as well as a Mesa Heartbreaker. Loved all three, but the Jake really nails that vintage Fender tone that I was missing.

I have been playing over 30 years. Most of my playing has been the acoustic noodling at home type of material, varying from blues to classic rock, open tuning, drop D rock type material. Currently, I seem to be heading toward country and blues (Southern Rock) type of sounds. My old amp is a Fender Blues Junior, which is a great one-trick-pony amplifier. The Jake Studio Combo is great. I now have 4 distinct sounds at two different power levels. As I mentioned earlier, the vintage/modern switch really does change the tonality of the whole amp--so in effect I have 8 different sound ranges to play with. All of this before any effects are added. Obviously, the fact that I found a good condition used Rivera for $800 played a major factor in the buying decision. At full retail, the Jake Studio was just a bit beyond my means. (I was going to buy a Chubster--another really cool amp.) I am beyond pleased with this purchase. This amp is my Holy Grail amplifier.

The amp was built in Dec. 99. This amp goes from Fendery clean to the most unbelieveable distortion. Two channels but with the footswitch you really have four distinct channels. This amp will take care of 99% of anything out there. The only thing I wish it had would be two separate reverbs... one for channel one and one for channel two. But what the heck you can't have everything and that's why I gave it a 9.

I play a Les Paul, a standard Strat, and a Parker Fly and everything sounds so different but sounds so good. I play rock, blues and a little country. I don,t find the amp very hard to set up and get sounding real good even at low volumes. This amp will play very clean Fendery sounds to nice bluesy tones on channel two. I can get alot of crunch on this channel. Channel 2 is pure Marshall. From the sounds of a Bluesbreaker to a JCM 800. Hit the footswitch and its a JCM 900 although not as buzzy. Turn up the post amp and Its a Soldano and beyond. Even at these settings this amp is extremely quiet! And by the way save your money buying that vintage equipment because this amp does a Fender deluxe and a Super Reverb to a "T" The reverb is heaven.

I play many different styles of music in many different situations - that is precisely why I chose this amplifier. There are 2 channels, with a boost on each one. In back you have a vintage/modern switch which gives you a warmer tone with slightly less volume in vintage mode, and a little bit livelier, more aggressive feel in modern mode, at full power. It's an all tube design (5 12ax7's and 2 EL34's) at 55 watts. Or is it 60 watts? I can't seem to ever get that straight but it doesn't matter. It's usually plenty loud. The enclosure itself is slightly bigger than a "55-12" (another Rivera amp) with a single 12" celestion G12T-85 speaker. The reverb comes from a cool-as-ice Hammond 'long-pan' tank. It's _very_ sweet, and that's coming from a digital guy... The 3-button footswitch is included. It controls channel-switching and their separate boosts. There is a mono effects loop in back with level controls for send and return. There's a line out and speaker output for and extension speaker cabinet. The internal 8-ohm speaker can be disabled or used at the same time as an extension. There is also a switch for matching up with the resistance of your speaker(s). It's covered in a yummy blonde Tolex and grille, with an equally delicious-looking brown and beige front panel. Unfortunately, the Jake Combo and Rake Reverb head give up the extra cool Focus knob for the reverb knob. Oh, well, you can't have everything - I guess it's a good trade-off, but it's still a drag! I enjoyed twisting that knob on the Knuckleheads.

I primarily use it with an American Standard tele with a Duncan Hot Rails or JB Junior in the neck position. I also use it with a strat-type thing with single coils and Jackson Humbucker. Those two guitars and that amp, with those pickups give me everything. Everything! My main music styles are jazz-rock and funky-type crap. The lead channel will infuse your face with a smile. If you gain-boost it, even on 2, that smile turns to a grin. Actually the amp starts to get nice-n-loud around 3.5 on the master, channel one. The distortion is SO smooth. It is a chocolate bar covered with butter and cream, with just the right amount of nuts in it to give it a crunchy buzz. (One disclaimer: I tried a Jake at Rudy's in NYC that sounded kinda rough - as far as I can tell, the tubes were totally shot on it). I do have to push channel two a little higher, though, to balance them out - I keep the pre fairly low on this channel, because cleaner is generally what I like out of a clean channel. But wait! I forgot about the blues band I'm in! Well, in that situation, I just raise the pre on the clean and back off a little on the lead's pre. If you don't already own one, go to a dealer and see what I mean... Then come back and read these reviews again after you buy it! At this point I should bring up the Mesa Trem-o-verb combo. For some reason, people like to compare these two amps. I will give you the main contrasts which led me to get the Jake. The Tremoverb does have more gain in the lead channel, but it was very thrashy and, honestly, not quite useable. You're saying, "Right, what does a jazz-rock/blues guy know about high gain? Go back to playing quiet!" Well, I say this: Since I've bought the Jake, I've noticed the truly bad guitar sounds people have been scratching out of their Tremoverbs. It hurts my ears. I guess that's all I need to say. Oh, and the Jake easily fits in a NYC cab seat next to me. I couldn't even lift the Tremoverb. Didn't even budge. Also, most dealers will want numerous hundreds of dollars more for Mesa. Rivera's not cheap, either, but I shopped around for a small dealer who knew what he was talking about and made like a bandit. I'll take the dough I saved and get myself a road case.

2 Minor problems:
My power tubes were rattling. Paul Rivera Jr. sent me new ones for free. Not covered by warranty, by the way... but you could have fooled me.
The reverb seems to find its way through, even when it's on zero, if you have the master volume up kinda loud. I should tell Rivera about this one.
Having said that, I've never heard of anyone's Rivera quitting on them at any time, ever. I'll take a wild guess and give it an 8.

It's the most enjoyable piece of equipment I ever bought aside from my first guitar - maybe. Everyone who hears this amp is suddenly my best friend. Studio engineers, live sound guys, other guitarists, my parents. They all want to know what I'm plugged into. The only things I am not crazy about are the fact that the boost on the clean channel is a little too pronounced and that tiny bit-o'-reverb that finds its way through when you play at high volumes. I should mention that I also tried the rake Reverb head version through a Knucklehead 412 cab. I almost bought that whole rig instead. Maybe for a tour with a bus, I will - otherwise I may just invest in a smaller extension cab. I like the Rake 212's and the Jake 112 cabs. I'd give it a 10, but if I were endorsing Rivera any more, they'd have to start paying me. You're still reading this?? Go try one out!

Two channels, Fender clean to crunchy, Marshall groovin to thrashomania. Enough tone, gain and presence control to get more cool sounds than I have been able to explore. I also purchased the 1-12 extension cabinet that was available for the Jake - I don't regret it.

Using a Fender Std Strat (mexicaster) with Texas Special pu's. Like to play blues - classic rock. I have not found a sound this amp can't make I played it for only 10 minutes in the store and new it was the solution to all my problems (ok, maybe not all of them). The variety of quality sounds that can be made with this amp is impressive. The 1-12 cabinet is well worth the extra money - it improves the already great low end tone, and perfects the fat, low end SRV sounds you can make on channel one. The Jake has hotter distortion than the R-55 - which I played before buying the Jake. The noise is very low - even at high gain on the hotter channel. Also should mention the extension is open backed.

Well, I've had it a week - had to order it cause when I went back to buy it, the one I tried had sold. Took 3 weeks to get it. Had some dried goo (most likely glue) under the name plate on the grill and the power tubes rattled loud when you play and F# anywhere on the neck. Rivera is replacing both... so I'm still not unhappy (It sounds so good that I have trouble being critical). The amp works great and seems as solid as it is possible to make an amp. Time will tell, but I only hear good things about Rivera.

I emailed a couple of questions about the amp to them and Paul Rivera himself answered them... took it back to the dealer - he called Rivera -got Paul Rivera jr. on the phone and shipped me a grill and new power tubes on the spot. I've been playing guitar for 20 some years - as a hobby... I'm not making money from it (only paying). I've owned about 4 other amps over the years. This is the most expensive amp I've ever bought... but it also sounds better than any amp I've ever tried (which includes mostly Fenders and Marshalls). I am constantly amazed that as I try turning all the nobs I find new incredible tones - every day it sounds better. I recommend going the extra couple of hundred or so dollars that it takes to get the extension cabinet - it makes the great sound even better and fuller. All in all, I'm very happy and think I'm a Rivera customer for the years to come. You wouldn't regret the investment.

This is a follow-up to the Jake. First, the notch is in the midrange control which converts the fender Channel from tweed to Blackface. I made the mistake of saying notch in reverb. Some other comments:
Jay Graydon told me that the Rivera Celestion 85 speaker will work best with this amp for a few reasons. The combo has a front mounted 12 inch speaker. V-30 Celestions are usually rear mounted because the outside edge of the speaker gives off a shrill sound. So when rear mounted, such as in a Marshall cab, the effect is diminished. Jay also suggested some tone settings like setting everything on 7 and as you turn the amp up, these settings start sounding better. At low levels, I have been using the bass at 7, mid-1, and t-4 as this will increase the bass response.
As far as the effects loop is concerned..This is one forgiving loop. I still use all Boss effects in the loop (3 delays, Chorus, and Graphic EQ for lead volume boost). This rig will not work in many loops, and even with my Mesa Tremoverb, which has fully adjustable levels for both send and return, you can get a bad sound if you don't keep the return level up. The Jake is more forgiving...There is no change in sound no-matter how you set the send and return levels.
I have gigged with the amp three times so far. Its very versitile. We play just about anything for money and go from Metalica to Steely Dan in a microsecond. I used the Fender Channel with Blackface pull notch along with the Ninja boost to nail the solo for "Rikki Don't Loose That Number". I also can switch right to The Offspring at the footswitch. Sure, my 30TH anniversary Marshall sounds great, but I could not nail the Fendery sounds. I also can nail the lead tone for Claptons "Wonderfull Tonight" which has gobs of reverb that only that long spring hammond can give.
All in all...The amp will get you the best Fender-to- Marshall sound via a footswitch. With these two sounds, just about any type of music can be played.
