Mine is a 1964 model. Its purchase was inspired by a particularly powerful midlife crisis attack. You see, back in 1968 my friend who was a guitarist and myself (a drummer) used to get together to jam. He had a '56 Les Paul Jr. sunburst finish with a Bigsby, and a Silvertone 1474 Twin Twelve amp. So I found a fairly recent Epiphone Junior guitar with a Sunburst finish and this Silvertone 1472 amp. The sound that I was searching for was deeply impbedded in my subconcious, and this combo seemed to match it pretty well. The 1472 has a lot of different tones in it, just play with the volume and tone knobs. No reverb or master volume or bright switches or none of that. But you can get alot of tone out of it. The single humbucker on the Junior makes this thing scream and loud too.

Its the 6v6 tubes. These are the sweet guitar tubes par excellance. I play hard, and the thing will break up even at 2 when you bang the strings and have the guitar turned up. I was looking for this sound for 35 years and found it. If you want clean sounds you are going to have to mic it, tho.

Reliability : 10
I got this amp with the original tubes in it, they all say Silvertone. In fact, the amp is 100 percent original. The 2 pronged cord is still supple. The light goes on. I have left the thing on for 30 hours straight, (by mistake) in my living room and I couldn't even hear it, it was so quiet. Its a recording amp, I don't believe it could keep up volume wise with the big boys, plus the case is made of pressed soundboard covered in plasticized paper. But it is light weight and that very constuction adds to its sound. The amp is 40 years old, and probably will be kicking in another 40 years. I'd trust it on a small room gig.

Wouldn't know. Maybe K-Mart will pick up on the service contract now they merged?

I am a drummer who dabbles in guitar. My guitarist turned me on to 6v6 tubes thru Fender Deluxes. I love the way the crunch breathes with the natural tube compression. Lots of sustain, low end and just plain good blues tone. I would imagine this to be a great Harp amp, too. I just bought a 1483, too, just to have the 6L6 sound too. I was really looking for a 1474 Twin Twelve, but couldn't find one, and they go for too much anyway. This is a great alternative to a Tweed Deluxe, at a bargain price.

All-tube combo amp from (i'm guessing) the late 50's or early 60's. Tube setup similiar to Fender Deluxe. One 12" speaker, two channels with independent volume and tone controls, tremolo with speed and strength knobs and super cool wooden footswitch.

Sound Quality : 8
The best thing about this amp is it's ability to get power tube distortion at a reasonable volume, whether at home by yourself or with a band. If you need more volume, mike it! If you want more EQ or reverb, add it! What this amp does best is give you that great sound of power tube distortion at a controlable volume level.

Reliability : 8
It's 30-50 years old, had the original tubes in it, and still works fine, what else could you ask for? I've had plenty of new gear that was nowhere near this in construction quality or reliability.

You can find some good info and schematics about these old Silvertones on the web.

This amp is great by itself, but is even better when run in stereo wih another tube amp of similiar power. One of the best guitar sounds I ever had were running this amp and a blackface Deluxe in stereo through a chorus pedal. The Deluxe had the top end clarity and reverb and this one had the bass and edge to complement it.

This amp is basically similar in layout to a Fender Deluxe, but sold originally by Sears & Roebuck. Judging from the 12" speaker date, mine was made in 1957. The grille cloth is gold sparkle, it has black vinyl with white piping on the cabinet, and seems to be the predecessor to the model 1482 with gray vinyl. It's got a diamond-shaped speaker cutout and knobs on the right front in a zigzag pattern: mic tone and volume, instrument tone and volume, and tremolo strength and speed. It's pretty much a one-sound amp unless you get it turned up enough to distort, but that's how these older amps are. I mostly play at home, but have used the amp in recording, rehearsal and once in performance. It's all tube with two 6V6, two 12AX7, a 6X4 and one another tube.

Sound Quality : 8
I play a '79 Gibson "The SG", homemade tele copy, and '61 Harmony Rocket H54. Without external effects, the amp seems to be best for blues and garage-type rock. It's got a warm clean sound, although grainier and not as trebly as a Fender. A bit of hum, although replacing the power cable with a 3-prong one was a good idea. The amp is loud enough to rehearse with a drummer, although it will be somewhat distorted by then. The distortion is raw and barky, and starts around 3 or 4. Not a metal amp, but probably could be used for jazz. The tremolo is subtle and sounds best with the speed knob dimed. Not as pronounced as the tremolo on a tube Fender.

Reliability : 9
Since getting the amp, I have completely retubed it, replaced the phase inverter, replaced the speaker with an Eminence 50-watter for a less "papery" sound, and grounded the power cable. I have never had any reliability issues, although it has never been gigged regularly. Seems very solid given its age and department-store origin.

Customer Support : No Opinion
No customer support considering the age of the amp.

I've been playing for a little over ten years, and have owned newer amps, like Fender, Peavey and Music Man. I think this is a cool-looking and -sounding little amp that's a nice alternative to other more expensive tube amps. These seem to be a good buy for the money. I would ideally like more sounds, but that's not what I expect from this amp. I plan to keep it, even if I had another newer or fancier amp.

I got this amp at Goodwill store my father managed. I managed to get the amp for a bargin. I think this amp was circa 1965, I can't find any dates or codes on anything. It's a tube amp, two 66v6gt's two 12ax7's and a 6ua6 tremelo tube. It's stamed 55 watts, 117 volts @60 cycles. One 12 inch Magnavox speaker thats actually not torn or ripped, although it does distort after about three or four. The case isn't in very good shape, the corners are worn and the handle is missing. The worst part is someone removed the grill and put some kind of black fury cloth in it's place, althought a good job. The amp sounds similar in looks as the 1482 model, knobs on the side in a verticle format. One mic input, two inst. inputs and a foot switch input in which the foot switch is missing, bummer. The unit is black and the back cover is missing. I use this in my basement with my 74 Montaya Les Paul custom copy that I paid 99 dollars for in 1974, the one with the plywood type body that won't tune worth a hoot, but thats another reveiw. I wish it did have reverb though.

Sound Quality : 10
The things got alot of power. I'm currently putting a Eminece or Celestion speaker to go with my Fender deluxe 90 amp. As a second cb for that amp it should sound great. Don't worry I'll keep the Magnavox around. It doesn't make much noise since I cleaned the tube pins. Has alot of base and toney highs. Can't wait for the speaker refit

Reliability : 10
After 30 or 40 years and some new tubes, I'd give it a go.

Over all its a great little amp, I just wish I had it when it was new.
