I bought it new at Guitar Center Chicago in the early 80's for something like 1200 I think. It was between the Randall and the Sunn but the Sunn had these cool black grates over the speakers, A/B/AB switching, effects loop, and Ted Nugent so I went with the Sunn.

It's very loud. The distortion is a bit fuzzy at low volumes but if you crank it to the point of killing small animals and turn down the highs it can get the 6L6's going pretty good. The A channel is based on a Fender circuit and the B channel is based on a Marshal circuit so it offers a lot to play with especially when you start combining channels..

Sound Quality : 8
Clean sound is great with a ton of headroom on A channel.
B channel distortion isn't that great at lower volumes and it's too loud to push into the power tube distortion. I'm picking up a THD Hotplate this week so I'm looking forward to seeing what the power section sounds like with a little attenuation.

The thing I don't like is that my model uses transistorized switching. From what I understand, it is usualy used to drop to ground and allow the signal to pass without actually going through the silicon but for some reason they did it differently and the signal passes through the silicon in this version. An amp builder friend of mine says it gives the sound an edge that he dosen't like. I may not have as good an ear as he has but maybe the sound could be better if they did it diferently. Other than that it's an all tube amp.

Reliability : 10
Still going strong in 2007. I have only needed to recone the speakers so far.

Customer Support : No Opinion

I don't find a half stack very useful but maybe with the Hotplate I would use it more. Overall a great amp with some interesting channels and controls.

Built in 1983, I bought this amp brand new in 83 from a local dealer when I first started playing guitar. I didn't know what I was getting but the salesman was slick and liked pointing out that Nugent played this amp. Two channel (A/B), effects loop, and a fairly sweet spring reverb built in. The stock tubes were Sylvania 6L6's and Mullard 12AX7's.

Sound Quality : 9
I play a '90 Fender Strat with gold Lace pickups. Also a home made guitar running Gibson PAFs and Vintage strat pickups. I play mostly blues and some alternative. This amp was always sweet to play blues through. It's gotten very noisy and will need to have some work done now. I can't crank the presense up with the noise kicking up. Same for the reverb. When it good shape (ie. new) it was smooth with some minimal noise when running the reverb.

Reliability : 9
I was always able to rely on it, even after someone spilled beer over the top. The beer has had it's effect though and the amp needs some work. I've replaced the 6L6's with a set of Svetlana's and the 12AX7's with Sovtek 12AX7WB.

Customer Support : 5
Never used it other than recently going to Fenders site only to find out I'd have to pay $10 for schematics.

Overall Rating : 9
I've always loved this amp. More recently I purchased a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe which I really like. But I really miss the punch from the Sunn.

Interesting 2 channel head allows you to have a separate tone set for channel A / channel B - and with the footswitch you can run "both" together. Very Rare from what I understand, only about 100 made. I hear that this was Ted Nugent's "signature series" head. And that there are actually 2 of them out there that are "camoflage".

Sound Quality : 10
Loudest head I've ever come into contact with. I have a Laney that is a close second, and I had a Hi-Watt that was comperable, but this thing is unbelievable.

Reliability : 10
Built like a tank. I don't beat it, but, it looks like if a bomb hit my home, the only thing that would be left standing is this head. It is 20 some odd years old, and every now and then I fire it up "just for fun", and it works like a charm every time..

Sunn is out of business

Overall Rating : 10
Great piece of equipment. I wouldn't replace it, as I don't "gig" guitar anymore. I am playing bass now, but, I would hate to lose it. It is quite a collectors piece..

Early 80's SUNN USA amp, pre-Fender. Very rare, less than 100 made. Two channels each with seperate gain, level, and 3 channel EQ plus system reverb and presence. Effects loop, multiple speaker options 4 ohm to 16 ohm. Power switch for 100 watt or 60 watt operation. Footswitchable channels and reverb. Manual control of channels with each channel's level control. uses 3 preamp tubes, plus 4 ^l^ power tubes.

Sound Quality : 10
Ideal for blues, rock, 60's metal, and deep sonorous cleans. Intensely sweet sustain at lower gain levels. I play a 70's Les Paul Deluxe and a 60's Fender Strat. Each guitar imparts different character into the amp. Sweet and smooth on the Les Paul neck pickup, Slightly rude with the in-between neck and middle PU position on the Start. Killer wail with the Les Paul Bridge PU. Dramatic swings in EQ with small changes in setting. Think AC/DC, GnR, Zeppelin, Crue, Early Metallica. Add a Metal Zone to high volume with lowered channel gain and get super Modern Metal and Alt tones.

Reliability : 10
Built like a tank. Tubes seem to last longer than in other amps I've played. It is easy to retube and bias. Separate transformers for 60 and 100 watt operation. Heavy duty metal handles on sides for easy carrying, won't break. Hard plastic edge protectors and beefy chassis make it almost bullet-ptoof.

Customer Support : 9
Great support through Fender website and tech department.

Overall Rating : 10
16 years have allowed me to play some really great amps. I would compare this to an early 70's Marshall JCM900, at about 1/3 the price. If I lost this amp, I would definitely seek one, possibly to the ends of the earth. Only about 100 ever made.

I believe this amp was made in 1984 or 86 it is extremely loud, louder than a model T 2 channels one high gain the other low. It is a switchable 100/60 watts, I run it into a 4/12 loaded with SHeffield speakers. Mostly use it to play loud punk.

Sound Quality : 10
The on amp distortion is extremely loud a fuzzy, Lot of bottom end on the built in distort. When the overdrive it off the channel is CLEAN. I cannot play this amp past 4 it is far to loud. I have played marshals, peavy, laney, (tube and solid state) and have never encountered a louder amp.

Reliability : 7
I have had to take it to the shop once, I am fairly neglectfull with my eq. it has been serviced regularly.

None, SUNN IS GONE

Overall Rating : 10
This amp is one of a kind, after researching it I have found that this was created just prior to SUNN being bought up by fender. Thus, Sunn created less that 100 production amps before this model was discontinued, I would be curious to meet anyone that also had owned this amp.
