Using single coils.........Sound is warm crisp and clear, great for Jazz & Blues very nice break up. Humbuckers.........Thick warm and full. This little amp produces some of the warmest tone I have ever heard. Great for Jazz.......Awesome for Blues! At only 8watts this amp cranks, perfect for studio use. For live use just put a Clean Boost in front of it and mic the cab.......It sounds HUGE!

Reliability : 10
Still working after all these years!

It took a while to find a U-42. Now I know why! I will never part with this little amp. I have Matchless, Bogner and lots of Fender amps in my studio, the U-42 is as good as any of them. A total tone monster.

The U-42 is by far the best studio amp I have ever used. I've been playing for more than 30 years...................Owned lots of gear! The amps were made from 1963 to 1965 with a white handle on top. I have used the 10 watt U-45 & U-45B in the past as well but the 8 watt U-42 is the ultimate for pure rich tube tone. If your looking for that sweet warm blues tone you can't beat the U-42.... That is if can find one! The U-45B's are all over the place, the U-42's are very hard to find........Once you have one you will understand why players never part with them. The amp is a very strong 8 watts, hand wired point to point.........Why can't they made amps like this today?! Oh wait they do...There called MATCHLESS and they start at around $2000.00. Save your money, go out and find a Univox U-42!

Over all I think this is the best amp for the money for studio and small gig's (miced)..............If mine were to break and the repairs were $500.00, I would fix it!

(copied from Univox.org) "U-42 - Cabinet resembles Supro style black sparke vinyl with two piping strips, 15h x 16.5w x 10d, white plastic TV handle, chassis mounted in the rear, three input (guitar, acc, aux), volume, tone, tremelo, tubes 12AX7, 6AV6, 6AQ5, 6X6, Jensen special design P12-S C7900 220440."
That sums up the specs. This is very similar to the U-45B. In fact, a schematic for the U45B was included with my amp, and the circuit is very, very similar. The major difference is that the the tremolo is not footswitchable on the U42. No biggie- I can't imagine gigging with this amp due to the low volume. Volume, tone, and Tremolo on/off/speed controls. I would love a trem depth control, but no biggie.

Stays clean until you get the volume up half way- then tube and speaker distortion creep in. After grounding the amp, it stays quite quiet. Very responsive to different pickup types and combinations. Also quite responsive to guitar volume/tone knob changes. Do not expect thrash distortion; A pleasant overdrive at a managable volume. I've noticed this amp is a little more sensitive to effects pedals. i.e. many pedals seem to do a lot "more" to the tone on this amp than they would on a Marshall. <shrug>
This has a truly versitile tone based on pickups and playing style. No complaints when you consider when this was made.

Reliability : 10
I had to replace the caps in the trem circuit when I bought it, and added a grounded power cable. No biggie for an amp of this age.
I would rely on the U42 just as much as any other amp. More-so I suppose, considering how easy this would be to fix.

A warranty card came with the amp. Pointless now, since Univox is no more.

Overall Rating : 10
I have owned many amps (Laney, Marshall, Vox, Peavy <ack>, Line6) and the U42 ranks up there with some of my favorite. This isn't a hugely versitile amp, but shines as a small tube combo that has a great retro vibe and tone. I love the fact that you can get a vintage 60's Univox guitar and amp for around $400.00. Who cares if it isn't a vintage Vox or Fender? Lots of fun and great tone for not much $$$.
