This amp is pretty cool, I bought it hoping to attain and ac30 sound... not quite but it sounds good. I play alot of stuff from blues to contemporary christian rock, so it seems to suit that stuff well. I used to use it to fill a large auditoriumsetting with a 57 infront of it... then i discovered cambridgeits Yikes! Now ive pulled it out and set it up in streo with my vox ac15 its killer till it browns out sucks.

Lovely sound through clean channel. Not so good through dirty. Simple solution for this is to use a quality distortion pedal.
I strongly disagree with those who say that this amp is not for heavy rock/metal or guitars with humbuckers. I use a Fender Big Apple strat and believe me - this amp can deliver some seriously heavy sounds, from Smashing Pumkins/Nirvana/Green Day to East Bay Ray/Dead Kennedy's.
....and without the distorion, texas tones and sweet sounding reverb are only a dial away. Ten out of ten from me!

Made in Korea I think in 2004? I wish it came with a footswitch - I had to buy one separately. I use this amp in the studio, and on stage our band BackBeat - a Beatles / 50's/60's cover band.
It's powerful enough for our practices - most times I have to mic it or run it through the PA during our live gigs.

I've played an epiphone Casino through this amp and it sounds great!
I also have a Gibson SG Standard - and recently picked up a Gretsch Pro Jet (similar to the Duo Jet) - playing these guitars through this amp is a joy!
The Casino has P90's - so they're very hot! - but great tone!
Gibson SG have the '57 Classic Humbuckers - Beautiful through the Cambridge as well!
As I mentioned, my latest addition is the Grestch Pro Jet (well worth buying if you've always wanted a Gretsch - I payed $400.00 CAN) This thing has that great "Beatles tone" through the Vox for that distict George Harrison solos.
I find that the clean channel stays pretty clean at high volumes - it really depends on your pickups.
The distortion is actually pretty good. I don't use it too often, but when I do, it sounds right.

Overall, "yes". I have used it at gigs, but with a back up amp. You should always have a back up amp - I don't care if you're playing with a Fender Reverb, Peavey or a Vox AC30 - nothing is infallible!
My amp has broked down completely - once, about 3 years ago just after I had bought it. It just died. I took it in for repair and it was something not-so-serious.
I recently had to take it in to get repaired - the clean channel started to crackle, and the overdrive channel wasn't working at all.

I've been playing for 24 years - mostly 50's 60's and Beatles.
As I mentioned earlier, Epiphone Casino, Gibson SG 400, 1961 Gibson Hummingbird (sweeeeeeeet!)and a new Gretsh Pro Jet.
Some mini Danelectro effect pedals - distortion and reverb.
1965 Vox Pathfinder Practice Amp (All TUBES!!!) - Beautiful Vox sound!
Buy this amp if you love the Vox sound. Before you do, if you can, open the control panel (the main box) to see if it has had repairs done to it - there should be repair stickers inside with dates.
Overall, I've only had to repair it twice in the 3-4 years of using it which isn't too bad when you consider the overall performance that I've got out of it.
Don't forget, this thing was made in Korea. Not the UK or the US!
I was looking at an AC15 - but their made in China and don't have the greatest reviews - I guess you get what you pay for!
I'd have to say I am satisfied with this amp, and a couple of repairs doesn't seem unreasonable.
I am putting plastic corner protectors on my vox as well, which I was surprised it didn't come with -my old 65' Pathfinder had them - I guess their cutting back to keep the price down.

this aint no ac30 hand wired or original 63 top boost model but it is a nice amp and the sound is good for the money if set up correctly, if i wasnt using a mesa boogie as my main amp then i would probably use this one for medium sized gigs, to me i find the clean channel downright dirty at high volumes

I connect it on stage with a Vox V212BN with 2 Vox/Wharfdale speakers. Two speakers have more "body" !
The combination of The Vox Cambridge and V212BN Cabinet is perfect. The Vox sound is not that clear as some others and I like it.

Fender Twin is too heavy to handle for daily or weekly use.

Vox has this.......... anyhow, it's something special.

I got mine second hand, it's supposed to be one of the later models, and before going on sale it was serviced by an amp technician I know to be competent. The features have been covered by everyone else below so I won't go into them; they're sufficient for my use. It has a Celestion Bulldog speaker.
It has a surprisingly high output for a 30W amp, and yet doesn't go dirty sounding at near top volume (I don't mean crunchy in a sweet way, but plain dirty and gritty, if you know what I mean). I use it for
Sound Quality
:

First things first: it does have "the Vox sound". If you're looking to get somewhere near that sound without the disadvantages of an all tube amp, this is probably as close as you'll get, and the excellent, very musical Celestion speaker plays a great role in that. If you're looking for anything far different than the Vox sound, look elsewhere.
The first channel remains clean until about 85 percent volume, and interacts very sweetly with good preamp drive such as a Boss SD-1 (esp. at low gain) or OD-3. Using the clean channel with an overdrive pedal will yield a variety of sweet Voxy (is that a word?) sounds. An important thing to note: make sure your overdrive / distortion has a tone control, or you're using an EQ pedal (preferably post-distortion); without some way of controlling the tone, the trebles may get unbearably high (a typical Vox thing) and compensating by turning down the channel's treble eats away too much of the amp's characteristic tone. It's better to shape your signal with the combination of EQ, boost and compression to your liking before it arrives at the amp, and just leave the amp at neutral settings.
You'll either love or hate the second channel. It has a thick, bassy, Big Muff-like sound (think a US Big Muff done English way) that's hard to control without an EQ pedal and good attention to playing dynamics. Replacing the stock tube will obviously alter the tone; even if you totally hate the way it ships, there's a chance that you'll get something you like out of with an EQ pedal and a new tube. Even if you find no use for it, the first channel plays very well with most overdrive pedals anyway. The second channel can also be played almost completely clean with a low gain setting and the boost switch disengaged, but it sounds too thin for my liking, though I guess it can be reinforced with a clean booster or a compression pedal plus an EQ pedal to make it sound good.
I play a stock 1991 Fender USA Telecaster through it, and they suit each other very well for my kind of tone: a punchy, "twang"y, raw Tele tone the English way. It's not any more or less noisy than any other amp of its class I've tried. I use it ungrounded.

I'll have to counter the horror stories: I've had it for six months, in which it was used for about ten hours a week and saw two gigs, and it's so far worked without a hitch. I've asked two competent guitar techs about its known "reliability issue", and they both answered the same: it can be unreliable, but is easy to fix, and the fix is permanent. Mine had the opto coupler mod done when I bought it, and it's apparently easy and cheap to get done even if your particular one doesn't have it; just make sure you know of a decent and honest guitar tech. I give it a 10 here because: 1) It's caused me no problems and I know that it can be easily fixed if it does 2) There are no symptoms that it will cause problems in the near future 3) I believe there is too much unreliability hype shadowing this amp.

I haven't dealt with them, and I don't think I will; if anything goes wrong I'll take it to a local guitar tech. I got it second hand and it has no warranty.

It's discontinued, so if you see one in good condition and are into the Vox thing, just get it. The average selling price is great for the features and value you get. It's the best solid state amp I've heard and definitely the closest one to the accustomed tube clean sound. I like it for the great cleans impossible to find in any other solid state amp, good interplay with drive pedals, original, non-standard sound in the drive channel, and its portability. I can't find any real fault with it at this price.

All of this has been covered in the previous posts so I will not elaborate here. Plenty for Me, I just mostly straight line this amplifier. Wish they would have only made this model in the 2X10" instead of also offering the single 10"

Sounds good at moderate to slightly loud volume levels, After that going higher creates an annoying raspy, buzzy, fizzy sound. I don't know whether it is the single 10" blue celestion futzing out or whether the stock TDA2050 power chip amp is clipping? Could be something else as well so I will have to look into it again. Other than that like I said if You keep the volume under control the sound is very Voxy indeed. The clean is spectacular and sparkly, Distortion is very rich and harmonic. At moderate levels. The Mid boost button? Why they incorporated that in there is a mysery to Me. Sounds like Crap! Reverb? creamy and deep control very responsive. Trem? very good from Choppy to barely there after I did the "opto" replacement. and adjustment of the trimpots.

I bought this amplifier after reading the dismal reviews about it here on HarmonyCentral, So I knew full well just what I was getting into before liberating it from the pawn shop it sat in for well over a year before making a deal and taking it away. This amplifier sounded great when I got it home and I thought I must have gotten one of the jewels, Although I was a bit concearned about the low output power. My hopes were dashed as I noticed after about a half hour of playing the amp volume would just fade away, Get muddy and just stumble if I turned the volume up to compensate. "See" it's that pesky & cheap where in the hell did it come from optocoupler.
So now I set my sights to remedy the malidy. I had already researched parts replacement options and all the modification articles I could find via the internet prior to acquireing this unit. So once I was comforatable about the availability of parts and the best price. Thats when I went and bought the amp.
The optocoupler is a Vactec # VTL5C3/2 I got mine from "Small Bear" www.smallbearele.com I believe it set Me back a whopping $9.00 delivery included, (Steve Daniels) Fantastic fella to deal with.
Well anyway I was set to do the opto change-out. II hope if You opt to do the work Yourself You have a lot of "Patience", Put on Guns N Roses if You have to and get rid of all the aggrivations in the house like Wife, Kids & the telephone, Cause Your a gonna need it. I will tell You right know getting the flimsy circuit board outa this amp is a royal pain in the ass! Short of Cutting all importaint wires to gain access to the opposite solder side of the board takes some judicious manipulation and fondling.
Well needless to say once I gained access I got the old opto out and the new one in and buttoned it all up again. After powering-up I was elated that I no longer suffered the volume drop-off after a long period of playing but was still very put-off by the low overall output power, In addition the trem no longer worked. Opened it up again and adjusted trimpots V11 & V12 with a plastic screwdriver. Prior to doing these adjustments I did measurements and found that from the factory this amp was only putting out about 7 watts total at full volume. So my assumtion is that the trimpots were never even calibrated from the factory, Whats up with that? So after judicious adjustment I had a ! LOT ! of Volume and a very active and controllable trem.
Next I tried the LM3875T Chip Amp 56 watt upgrade, That did'nt work for Me yet all it did was put a 60 Hz hum in the speaker so I will have to look into that one as well. So I put the origional TDA2050 Power chip back in and have been playing like that for now. I got the LM3875T Power Chips from Futurelec. www.futurelec.com./index.shtml
I believe these chips set Me back a whole $4.00 a piece and the shipping was pimples. Remember if You opt to do the chip amp replacement that it should be isolated from the heatsink with an appropriate insulator and also use heat transfer silicone to make the connection between Chip, insulator and heatsink. If You are geting a continuity reading from the metal tab of the Chip Amp and the heatsink, Then something is wrong! Do Not Power-Up! Find and isolate the problem.
Also Watch that rear panel "Jack" circuit board dos'nt come into contact with any of Your new handi-work after reassymbly of the rear cover panel! Good Luck!

This Could have been a winner for "VOX" (The Cambridge) and instead of fixing a Bad problem decided to dump on the customers and discontinue the product. Then release more & improved products with even more reliabillity problems, Read the reviews. I don't feel-up to tackleing a modeling amp with problems.
I am in the process of redesigning the (Camridge) as I write this and after I feel confident and comforatble about production costs; will submit a proposal to Korg and see if they will go for it, Seems a long shot at the moment as KORG seems to really not give a rats ass about driving a Brand Name or Model # into oblivion through inferior design and indifference on the cusps of making a buck and forgetting about the people Who bought their inferior products.
I am also proposing having these items made in the U.S by "Americans" that the current adm, would have You believe don't want to work.
Price as I see it right now would be about 399.00 but would be a very gigable amp with no particle board any where. And a real and trouble free bullet-proof hybrid 30 Watts with 2 X 10" speakers!
Comments and questions should be sent to tripodtripper@yahoo.com
Thank You, George Mc Natt
Remember these Oddball (Discontinued) Korg offsprings are going up in price and by some perverted twist of collectabillity are going to go through the roof as far as dollar amount go. So get Yours now before they either get bought-up or thrown out the back of a fast moving vehicle. I saw that happen once! See thats what got me interested in the whole KORG/CAMBRIDGE Thing

I'm using a 50th American Series Fender Strat and a 96's MIJ Fender Strat with two SCN single coils and a Dimarzio Virtual PAF humbucker (bridge)
I am very pleased with the sound of this amp. Ch.1 is fat and warm. It has a nice sparkle to the top end without being harsh.
Ch.2 is dynamic. You can go from almost clean to dirty just by pick attack. Anyway I rather prefer my stomboxes when I want some dirt: Maxon OD808, Deucetone RAT or Mosferatu
As I said before, very nice reverb and tremolo
Finally, the Celestion bulldog is beautifully voiced.

I've been playing for 30 years, half time pro, Rock covers from Beatles to Purple, Police, you name it.
I use to play almost all weekends. I use to have (not at the same time) Marshall JCM900 high gain dual reverb and 1960 cabinet (gosh heavy mutant!), Mesa Boogie Mark IV (heavy too and need to be an engineer to deal with it), Fender The Twin, red knobs (still heavy), Marshall JCM900 Mod 4501 (50w combo), JCM600 (60w Combo)
Greats amps huh?... but I realized I play mainly in small to medium gigs (pubs, small restaurants) and all this stuff is suited to play loud, very loud if you want to get the best response.
I know that because I played a couple of times in a stadium and there was when I found the best response. With all this 100/85/50 valve amps you can not play that loud in small/medium venues, if you want to keep your, besides all this amps sounds anemic when you set volumen and master at 2
Also, I was tired to carry all this stuff and now my back is grateful again
Anyway I keep the Fender Hot Rod Deluxe 40W (loud anyway!..and heavy), The Fender Pro Junior (not heavy, loud but boxy) and the Vox. And this last one is perfect in weight and sound. Enough loud for my needs, believe me. Let me tell you more: Last weekend I played in a party. We performed our show in the garden, big one. I miked the Vox and its perfomance was superb! I heard myself on stage It worked beautifully, without problems, great tone, bottom, with the volume and master halfway up even standing our hard hitting drummer

This is really a cool combo amp. Ive had it for about a month and it works great. I got it off eBay for 200 dollars. For that price its amazing, you get a tube preamp, dual channels, spring reverb, tremolo, 30 watts, 10" celestion speaker. It also has dual footswitch jacks, headphone out, preamp out, ext. speaker. I dont know the exact year, but it was manufactured i believe in the late 1990s. Its not the most powerful amp, but it could probably do a small gig. Its enough for what i need it for, particularly rock/blues.

I juse this amp mainly with my stratocaster. I have heard this is an amp for single coil guitars and it sounds incredible with my strat, especially in bride or bridge/middle settings. It doesn't buzz at all. Its a great rock/blues amp, but i also play jazz. This amp is generally too muddy for jazz, but for rock it sounds great. On channel one the amp breaks up smoothly when turned up and i think it would be powerful enough to power a small gig, but not more than that. The distortion is NOT for the metal crowd, it is a nice crunch that slowly breaks up more as it is turned up. THis amp is not suited as much to humbuckers, it gets too punchy and distorts slightly too easily. The 2nd channel is quiet for some reason, but it has a fine line where the tube overdrives and the volume boosts alot. THis is not a heavy powerchord/metal amp, the bottom end can be too punchy and woofy, depending on guitar settings. IT is a GREAT lead amp however, with sparkling trebles and clean mids. One complaint, sometimes in the clean channel i cannot get the tremelo off all the way so i hear a slight tremelo effect, but its not as noticeable when its turned up to higher volumes.

I wish this amp had a 12 inch speaker, dual inputs, slightly more power (maybe 40 or 50 watts), and a switch to turn the tremelo on/off. Other than that, i really like this amp, and its definitely worth the 200 dollars i paid for it, with all those features.

I primarily use a Am/St Telecaster, Rick 330-12, CIJ Jazzmaster, Casino and a no name lap steel through this. Telecaster mainly. Music style (with this amp) is jangly Ocean Blue/Riverside/Smiths (I go direct for the MBV/Ride/Swervedriver things.).
Sounds the best with the Jazzmaster and the Tele.
Love the clean and am getting into the 2nd channel a little more (I'll probably replace the Sovtek tube though). Distortion set at 12 o'clock, no mid-boost is very nice on the arpeggiated and single string stuff. I usually add a chorus (TC) a couple of delays (Boss/Line 6).
If you want this thing to wail, it won't. Go buy a cheap used Crate or something. It's perfect for a studio or an apartment. I don't think it's loud enough to play out with, but it's got a really rich sound for recording.

I've been playing for 10 years (maybe 6 seriously). My Cambridge is part of a home studio and absolutely perfect for recording. Since I don't play out, most of the recording I do is direct (POD, etc.) so this is only the third amp I have ever owned (started on a Squire Bullet - don't laugh; this one replaced a Princeton Chorus) and I don't think I'll be looking for one soon. If I had the space, I'd have an AC30 like almost everyone else here, but for a small studio this amp is totally righteous.
Kind of hard to find now, but I'm probably going to get another one and use the pair.
I love this amp and until I find some space, it's the only one I'm going to use.

Bought this amp for about 200 bucks off eBay mostly just to have a Vox amp. It has a good tremolo and the reverb is OK as well. It can really only be used as a practice amp with my Fender Telecaster Plus (hot hot hot dual red lace sensors in the bridge and blue lace sensor in the neck). It doesn't seem like a good 30 watts.

Hmm... mine distorts easily out after a while. Also it takes a bit to warm up sometimes and the tremolo won't turn off.

NOT RELIABLE. Mine also suffered Cambridgitis and I had to pay 81 bucks to fix it. Not very reasonable to pay half the value of the amp to fix it. Just not worth it.

Two channels; one clean, one overdrive through a single 12AX7 tube. Footswitchable tremolo and reverb. This is the 30R with one 10" Bulldog speaker.
Made for Vox by Korg. See lots of complaints about this amp. Maybe I got lucky, mine's been a gem. Purchased new in June of 2000. Serial number is 1289.

Using a MIM Strat with Rio Grande Vintage Tall Boy pickups. Great clean sound out channel one. It's no AC30 but they've done a good job of getting the clean channel to break up a little bit to give it that Voxy jangle.
The second channel is also pretty good once you ditch the tube that comes with the amp. I replaced mine with a Mesa 12AX7 and the thing sounds so much better. With the gain set to 3/4 and using the volume control on the Strat I can get anything from a dirty little blues sound to a decent AC/dc type crunch. I'm so knocked out by the sounds I can get out of this amp. It's no Marshall or even an AC30 but it's very versatile.
That being said, it doesn't seem as loud as 30 watts. I think I'm going to do the power amp chip replacement others are doing to take it up to 56W. Should be loud enough then.

Here's where things get a little less rosy. The cabinet is made out of pressboard and I doubt it could take too much knocking around before it buckled under. The tube socket on mine seems to be a little sensitive. If I don't put the tube shield on just right the tube will cut out. In light of this I do tend to baby the thing. I would gig with it but I don't think I'd recommend it for touring. It's just too light duty for that.

Been playing for 23 years. Also own a Fender Twin and a Peavey Classic 30. This Vox sounds way better than the Peavey which somehow doesn't seem right.
If it were stolen I'd try to track down another one for sure. I had a choice of the single 10" or the twin 10" and opted for the single. I should have gone for the two tens I think.
When I purchased this amp I did so because it was the most full-featured, best-sounding on ein its price range. I'm glad I did. Would buy another on in a heartbeat.

Well im service technician, and im fixing one of these amps, it has a crackle and a volume drop. First thing i noticed was the 12ax7 heater voltage - too high to merit a long lasting preamp tube, transconductance drop would occur after short use. The heater voltage has obviously been over-rated by some newbie tube tech, thinking it will add tone; unfortunately disregarding reliability. Well, reminds me of a Samick amp with regards to construction and circuit layout, not exactly a soldano lmao (leagues apart). Im yet to examine the schematic and peruse the rest of the internals. But i shall post again if i find anything interesting..

You all know what this amp features. If you don't, browse www.voxshowroom.com and you will find it. Pretty nice amp, loads of features if you consider the price. But I am writing to make a sugestion to the Vox Cambridge owners. Change the preamp tube to a 12AT7. I think all models come whith a 12XL7, but it's way too powerfull for it. I am giving the amp a 9 in features for that. Besides de tube chance, It's has all you need.
Sound Quality
:

Channel 2 is way too dirty and bassy with the 12XL7 stock tube. It's kind hard to find a nice sound. You have the option to get "distortion" or "more distortion" (if you push the "more gain" button). Since you have the option to have two kinds of sounds on channel 2 (even three diferent sounds with the middle boost on), It's more usefull to have an nice overdriven channel and an good distorted one for your Led Zeppelin/Black Sabbath days.
Besides that, you have too much bass on channel 2. I mean, you can't pass the bass knob over 2. Really heavy bass.
The 12AT7 tube has 70% power compared to the stock tube, but you don't miss the volume loss. Mostly because you can get a more trebly sound, you hear more frequencies. It's a simple and cheap change and worth every cent.
I play a Fender Tele Custom (the one with a humbucker on the neck position) and a De Armond Stafire Special (with 2k alnico De Armond pickups), mostly 50's/60's rock, rockabilly, blues, late 60's stuff.
The clan channel is nice, but it's all solid state. The tube just run on channel 2. Channel 1 gets a bit dirty when you push the volume past 6, let's say. Pretty good for a solid state channel. A love the variety of tones, you can get some nice bass for jazzy e bluesy sounds, a kind of rare thing on a small amp. A though it would be louder for a 30 watt amp, but It's a solid state channel and I am used to tubes. But you can play clean stuff on channel 2 if you chance the tube.
Spring reverb it's a iten on it's own right. VERY GOOD reverb. Use it on 10 and play The Ventures! Tremolo is also VERY GOOD. For old school rock lovers, it's heaven.

Well, nice amp. Change the tube.
If you are looking for a small amp, with spring reverb, tremolo, line out, preamp out, headphone out, footswitch jack, good dirty channel, fare clean channel, lightweight (this is important), probably you won't find it. It's not easy to an amp with all these features and good sound for a good price. Two thumbs up for Vox.
Oh, and you can gig with it on small clubs. I did recently and It went well (of course, ou have to put a mic in front of It).
There is another small time problem. A heard a fellow saying that the amp loses it's tone after some minutes of using due to the heat. I think I suffer the same problem, but I just got it, can't really tell. So, he put a computer cooler on it. It's an idea.

This has been covered...I needed a small amp under 400 euros with reverb and TREMELO! Let's face it, there's aren't many choices out there...I like the line out, I like the speaker out (more on the speaker later). Footswitchable channel and tremelo is very handy (and the option for switching gain and reverb is nice too). Overall, lots of bang for the buck.

At first I tried guitars with humbuckers and P90s through this amp--and really hated the sound. I mean, I was disappointed. Just kind of harsh, grating--actually, I think it's the speaker that can't keep up, as soon as you try to push the volume, it just breaks up into garbage. But it's the gain channel too--at low volumes, it's okay, but pushed a little too hard...and you just can't run the tremelo with the gain channel, just sounds like mud.
Ah, but then I picked up a cheapo Morris Melody Maker copy with single-coils...and wow, what a difference! All of the sudden this amp sounds great, just like I wanted it to sound. Nice and warm--the clean channel is delicious, the gain channel is snarly but controlled. Still, the speaker really sucks--it's just too small. But the amp's not worth adding cabinet...right now I'm thinking of modifying it by putting in a 12" Greenback...don't know if that'll work! So I'm rating this a 5 --if you don't have single-coils, don't bother with this amp.
The reverb is nice and deep sounding, but never gets in the way. The tremelo could be a little more extreme for my taste--it's quite restrained. I usually leave it set to the fastest speed and then just nudge it into the overall sound. I bought THIS amp for the tremelo--there aren't many amps out there offering tremelo anymore...

This is an apartment/studio amp--they made that clear when they 'forgot' to protect the corners. Don't know why--how much could a set of corners cost?
I've had the amp for about six months now, routinely keep it running 5 or 6 hours a day or more (it's next to my desk while I work, I play it, type, play it, type...). Never had any cause for alarm.
But still, it's obviously cheap construction, and the way my band tosses things around, I wouldn't want it near them! (I don't play guitar in this band, so I don't need to bring it.) Still, since I've had no problems, I'll give it a decent rating.

I just started playing again six months ago (after a long break), and this amp has helped me regain a lot of what I'd lost...for that it has been the perfect companion while I wait until I can afford a true pro amp. I plan to start gigging next year, by then, this puppy will be replaced. Too bad those AC30s are overpriced!
Like I said, I was really disappointed by the amp until I plugged in a single-coil guitar, and now I really like it--except the speaker is still too small, and that part's a shame. Wish I'd been able to get the twin version, but it was hard enough finding this one here (France).
If you're looking for a home/rehearsal amp, I think this is a good choice. If you're willing to gig with it, you're braver than I am.
I'm cutting the overall rating because of two things: The shitty speaker and my lack of confidence for bringing this along for gigs.

2 channels - one clean (solid state), one 'hybrid' channel with a 12AX7 in the preamp. Reverb, trem, 'gain boost,' classic Vox look.
Seeing that I bought this as a closeuout at $199, I was impresed for what features were available for the money. A pretty loud 30 watts makes this appropreate for club gigs - or you could mic it.

Overall, this amp has a pretty decent sound. I like the clean channel - very clear with a nice ring to it. I've played both a tele and an Ibanez archtop through it. I'd have to say that I prefer the sound of humbuckers if I had to pick one over the other. The second channel is more suited for a blusey style. I didn't care for the 'gain boost' option, but I normally use a pedal for overdrive.
I was suprised how loud this amp was - when it's really cranked, the speaker 'quacks' with some tones. As I normally mike my speaker, I don't normally use that much volume - a setting of 4 1/2 - 6 (depending on guitar) seemed enough to drive the speaker toward a warm but clean tone.
I really like the tremelo - sounds really good.

Hmm...
As one can gather from many of the other reviews here, this amp has its problems. Mine worked perfectly before it suddenly came down with a classic case 'Cambridgeitus.' I had the amp repaired at a moderate price and then...several gigs later - same thing. Also, at one point the gain pot stopped working. Its a real shame that Vox/Korg wasn't able (or willing)to work out the bugs in this thing - the potential for an amp leading its price range and size was possible.

This amp has some pretty decent features. I liked the seperate (although limited - high and low only) EQ for each channel. Even some more expensive amps have only a shared EQ. Also the mid and gain boosts on the second channel really help to give you a nice selection of sounds if you use a decent guitar. Also, the tremolo effect can be cool when used correctly. Nice 10" Blue bulldog Celestion and tube/solid-state hybrid construction. There is no effects send and the outputs to a seperate cab or for recording, are limited and don't sound too good.

This amp has some great tone. It took me back when I first played it. The cleam channel when played with a nice single coil, really sings. I feel this amp must be graded for what it is professing to be. To mark it against a 60W Fender with 2x12s is not fair. It has great tube like tone for a mostly solid state 30W amp with one 10 inch speaker. It is absolutley brilliant at home practice volumes, yet can stand well in a band practice situation. It is missing a bit on the low end (probably due to the 10") and has some white noise which can irritate some. For the money, it beats most in its class. The output from the preamp for recording purposes or to PA is not good. The resulting sound (while functional) looses all its great tone.

I did have to get a reapir done on this amp. After a year, it put out a weak distorted sound that failed to get to a truly audible level. The reapir bill was cheap ($40) and I was good to go again. I have been playing for 10 years and sadly enough, this was my first decent amp (bought 3 years ago). Until that time I played at home or soley for recording through a preamp to a PC or headphones. I think that amp is a good comprimise between solid state and tube. I sounds great, and if it didn't breakdown I might not have gotten another amp. Unfortunately, Vox has discontinued the amp. But if you catch one on Ebay or in a shop and are looking for a nice little practice amp with great tone for the buck, pick it up.

- Footswitchable Spring Reverb
- Footswitchable Tremolo
- Mid Range Boost
- Ext cab out

I use one of the following:
Epiphone 335 Dot (humbuckers)
Rickenbacker 360 (humbuckers)
Danelectro DC-12 (single coil)
The amp really chimes with all three guitars. You're best off elevating the amp a couple of feet so it has room to breathe. Clean channel is clean with very little distortion even when pushed hard. The tremolo is sweeping and full-- I actually wish it were more robust. The reverb is decent, but I stick with a EH Holy Grail instead.
The Gain channel is *awesome* I understand the gain channel uses a similar configuration of the V810 Valvetone pedal, which is essentially a Tubescreamer. It sounds that good, and pushes the 12AX7 VERY nicely. Cranked wide open, there's still oceans of tone. It sounds ridiculously good with a modulation device (flange or phase) in front of it. The distortion is not overly metallic or overbearing, which suits me perfectly. Metalheads will probably want to look elsewhere (when have they ever been interested in Vox?)
30 tube-driven watts is plenty to play out with. I have no trouble bringing it to practice and being heard over my friends' blues jr. or epiphone pacemaker.
I've experienced very little hum (more from the Dano's single coils) from this amp, but some 60Hz is to be expected.

Just bought two of these to use as a stereo rig. I bought them both used but paid up for them on Ebay. I found one to have a more used tone than the other due to the age and obvious use but the loss of high freqs was actually pleasent for cranked tone.
I am an audio engineer by trade and I produce music, very little playing but when I plugged in my ricko 370 in stereo I was blown away with the cool counds. The reverb is bright and hashy but I plan to ad a mojo in the bottem of the amp case and remote it. Will likely look for a way to kit the output up with a pair of 6v6s. Let's see PSU 5u4 and a fender out xformer. Sounds like a cool product to me. There is plentuy of room in one of these cheap amps to do stuff like this so get ready for a classic mod find as they will likely go up in value soon.
I thought i would hate a chip based solid state amp. Cound the contrary. I love the sound od this little guy.

(UPDATED REVIEW!!!!)
This review should totally overshadow the review I made a while ago.
30w vavle-state combo
2 channels
1st channel: voulme, treble, bass
2nd channel: volume treble, bass, gain, mid-boost switch
reverb and tremelo controls
two foot switch jacks: (top - channel, rear - tremelo)
three output jacks: studio line-out, headphones, and external speaker out
single 10' Blue Celestion Bull-dog speaker
Missing features: Effects loop, mid controls, stand-by switch
I have used the tremelo effect on occasion and get varying results. Overall I find the Tremelo nice to have, if I'm not using my regular setup. I would rather have the Boss TR-2 at my feet than the inbox tremelo.

I'm using a heavily modified Epiphone ES-335 (Burstbucker 2 neck pickup, 500t super ceramic pickups, w/coil/phase tap on each, grover locking tuners, bone nut, and the rest is all offical gibson hardware!) through a Vox Clyde McCoy wah pedal, Boss TR-2 Tremelo, and Danelectro Cool Cat. I'm also known to use a Ovation Celebrity Deluxe acoustic through this setup as well.
I play a lot of Rock, blues, jazz, and punk, and this amp can really dish it out. The Clean channel is supurb and emits an incredible tone. However at 1 o'clock (where I usually play it at) I get a natural overdrive out of my guitar because of the pickup/guitar/amp combination so I have to keep an eye on my guitar's volume to get a true clean sound with no distortion.
The distortion channel is definatly what this amp is all about. I've played through AC30TBX models and while the overdrive of the AC30 is much better, the Cambridge definatly has nothing to fear. What I mean by this is that the Cambridge 30's overdrive is almost as creamy and errotic as the AC30's. Definatly my favorite sound!
Of course I would have sold the amp already if I didn't pipe the amp through a custom cabinet housing 2 12' Celestion Greenbacks.

I've been playing for 5 years now, and I have used my fair share of equipment, and I have to say that the Cambrdige 30 was definatly worth it's weight in gold.
In fact, I love this amp so much that I now use my cam30/cab combo at all gigs and my AC30 sits at home. Why you ask? Well the Cam30/cab combo is much lighter, has a much larger stage pressance, and is a much better choice for my needs. The overdrive of the cam30 is great and can be switched off at the push of a pedal, the ac30 however has no channel switching, making it too hard to use on stage for quick changes between sounds. (I had to use my guitars onboard volume before) Also I perfer the overdrive of the cam30 towards any distortion effects pedal.
The Cam30 is an incredible amp which I would love to see more artists use, but because of limited numbers and the discontinuation of the amp, I doubt we will see very many on stage...except for mine!

Features on other reviews. Made in Korea. 2 channels. NO DIGITAL EFFECTS. I have spent 10 years gathering my FX setup- I do not want an amp with FX. Everything I want, nothing I dont; although, it could probably use a middle EQ know on either but the sound quality is such that you really don't need it. People have said that the valve is only for the dirty channel, but I don't think so. When I turn it on and it's on clean, it takes a LONG time to sound, just like a valve. If anyone knows about this, please email me.

I'm using it with a Yamaha RGX, Ibanez CT and a custom tele. It sounds superb. The tele is a home-made project and the Vox brings out the very best in it. MUCH better sound on the neck pick-up than any amp I've ever tried- incuding Fender Champs etc. This amp has a full, rich tone that makes all of my guitars different- in a good way. The clean channel is as rich as any tone I have ever heard from a guitar. Dirty channel is the first I've ever used much (because I usually hate amp distortion). It is superb all-round sound.

Well, I know this is the part where these amps have their downfall- in fact, mine is a factory second which had repairs even before I bought it. But, I guess the rating goes on MY amp and thus far I have had no problems with it, although I guess I haven't had it long enough. One note: guys, if you get it and it doesn't work, don't mark the 'Sounds' category down- mark reliability down. Whilst I concede that there seem to have been reliability problems (and lots of them), there don't seem to be many complaints about the sound.

I can safely say that this is the first amp I have bought solely on the basis of sound quality. The first hybrid amp I've amp I've owned-I was a solid state man. I am now selling my Laney World Series Combo (120TR). And for the money, it doesn't get any better. I know there are problems with reliability and it may therefore be a liability but it sounds so good, I have made a calculated risk. Set up: Tele ->Jen CryBaby Wah (original)->Ibanez DML-10 (modulating delay)-> Boss OS2 (dist/o'drive)->Boss ME-30->Vox. I'm getting close to the place...You know...the place.

I play mostly warm guitar sounds, velvet underground, sparklehorse, sonic youth, new country stuff. I saw this amp in the shop and was reluctant to try it as I thought it would sound very bad. I tried it and was shocked, wasn't too bothered about the clean channel as it sounded thin but the dirty channel had the best tones I have heard in a long time. Warm, vintage, organic, REAL. I was shocked how great it sounded. Being very dubious I kept the credit card in the pocket and spent a week or so reading reviews (read this page about 50 times) and asking around, the good reviews seemed to far out number the bad ones. I went ahead and brought, and was very happy with the sound I got.......... on the first night.

My nervousness was confirmed after reading these reviews. After ONE night of playing, I got a crackle in the amp, no matter what speakers, leads, guitar I used. I really could not believe it, shortly afterwards the volume dropped on the clean channel and the tremelo stopped working. LISTEN TO THE REVIEWS PEOPLE.

most sounds are relative. meaning they react to what you use with them. i use solid body, humbucking guitars (gibson, dean) and found that it brought out many difernt tones than wat i had heard before on other amps. the gibson was a little muddier than with the fender i previously owned but that was able to be tweaked out within the first day. the dean gave me a brighter, more trebly sound but i liked it so that was cool. i prefer the british clean tone and rely on stomp boxes alot. if you want a good blues amp this probably isnt the amp for you. i found that i had to turn up the gain on my distortion a little but that was not a problem. the reverb sounds wonderful and the tremelo is pretty good too. i am looking for a tremelo pedal though. i was very disappointed in the distortion channel. even with the bass on 0 and the treble on 10 it was still muddy. might work for blues but i dont play blues. overall this is a truly amazing solid-state amp. i am very, very pleased.

I always try everything and think all options over before bying something, because hey i'm just a poor student and this 300 euro's is al lot money for me.
@ months ago i bought a new guitar, the new ibanez as73. And i'm glad i did, this thing has better lloks and tone than the 300 euro's more expensive epiphone dot.
Last month I bought myself a new amp. After a lot of testing and comparing i bought a cambridge 30 reverb. Now, a few weeks later i now i made the right choice.
2 channels, one clean (solid state) channel and the second i really like is the channel with a tube in the pre amp wich delivers great tone.
It's got reverb on it
And tremolo, wich is usable as long as you dont turn the dept open all the way.

I've got the perfect combination with my guitar, and I can get almost any sound out of it. Exept for nu metal shit wich I don't like anyway so that's alright.
If you buy the footswitches for this amp, it's great because you'll get thanks tot the gain boost three channels. Clean, crunchy and great overdriven solo sound. The tremolo and reverb are also footswitchable.
A lot of peoply who write theyr reviews about this amp compare it to the ac series. You can't do that.
This is the best amp IN IT'S PRICE RANGE. You wont find a nicer amp for 200 euro's more.

The amp has a great Jimmy Page, Clapton, Harrison sound, very much late sixties sound. On complaint is the lack of a midrange tone control. The clean channel overdrives nicely at high volume and the gain channel is delicious tube snarl. I replaced the original tube and the output increased by a pretty big step.

I use a Jay Turser hollow body and a Gibsin les paul standard. I have a wide range of styles and sounds that I like but if you are wanting an early rock and roll sound that is a little dirty then this amp is nice. don't even think aout turning the gain boost and gainlevel up all the way as it gets very muddy. New tube might change that a bit. Keep the gain boost on and the level to about 3-4 and it gets a nice clean but dirty rolling stones sound that i love. The clean chanel is nice but I will rarely use it or the tremelo. Nice features to have. Reverb is OK. Add a Tube screamer pedal and you woul dhave anice little set up

I would for sure buy another one if this got stolen. In play alot of differnt styles but prefer an aggessive heavy edges rock blues kind of thing. It fits that pretty well and considering I got it for peanuts I am very happy. I will for certain add a pedal or two(overdrive, chorus, wah, etc) and it wil be an amp I would certainly gig with. Two channel 30w amp with volume, bass, and trebel controls for each channel, as well as gain and bass boosts for the second channel, and finally tremelo and reverb controls.
There are two foot switch ports for channel switch/tremelo and reverb/gain boost. No effect loop, but there is headphone jack, line-out, and speaker line out.
Comes with a blue magnet celestion bulldog 12' speaker, and a single tube preamp.
And why didn't they put in a freakin standby switch.

I'm using this amp with an Epiohone Es335 tuned down a half-step which I use to play lot of Rock, Ska, and Surf music. Unfortunatly the reverb really sucks, and I personally find the tremelo feature quite useless.
Another problem is that I'm getting an incredible ammount of noise through the standard speaker, so I plugged in a pair of 12' vintage celestion speakers I grabbed out of my old defunked Fender Twin. This also increased the volume three fold!
With the clean channel at 3 o'clock I found it pretty acceptable to my standards. Especially for a $225 amp. The distorted channel, while incredible noisy, is one of the best overdrives I've ever heard! Especially with the gain maxed! This awesome overdrive is possible through the single tube.
8 because I pumped it through seperate speakers.

I would use it to gig without a backup too...however it's not my lead amp, I also use Vox AC30TBX....this is just for practice since the 30 is MUCH louder.

I've been playing for about 7 years now, and I have owned & used many amps from Fender Redknob Twins, to Roland Jazz Chorus, Vox AC30TBX, Traynor, Marshal...but nothing has ever satisfied me as much as the Vox amps.
In fact I have now ditched my distortion and overdrive pedals because the Cam30R has some of the best overdriven sounds I have ever heard! All I'm using now for effects are my Danelectro Cool Cat, Boss Tremelo, Danelectro DanEcho, Boss Acoustic Sim, and the Boss V-Wah. Who needs overdrive pedals when you got a cam30.
I didn't really compare anything to this amp because I wanted something dirt cheap for practice in my apartment that I would also be able to slave other speakers through so that it could be loud enough for stage pressance (it could be fine at mic'd venues). An incredible buy for what you get.... Find another amp of this quality for under $300!

Holy Cow. For 200 bux, you're getting 1)reverb 2)vibrato 3) TUBE PREAMP 4)dirty channel 5)cleanchannel 6)footswitchable options 7)Celestion SPeaker and last but not least 8)that sexy VOX name and an extremely attractive amp, visually and sonically. I've had this amp for about 7 months now. I play it every day, soft loud, distorted, clean. It's a beaut! There is absolutely NO buyers remorse. I don't LONG for any other amp... I'm giving it a 9, becuase I wish they provided a switch pedal...

This amp sounds fabulous. It's loud enough for gigging despite what some of the clowns here have said. Here's a reality check; when you're gigging, the sound man MICS your amp and runs it through the PA. If you go up their with a loud amp, you're going to get lots of stage noise, phasing issues, and a pissed off croud. I see it all the time, some cocky loud guitarist..
Back to the sound:
This amp is DARK sounding. IT's clean sound is one of the best out there. The dirty is pretty darn good (but i really don't use it, i use tubescreamer more) IT's not brutal distortion, more of an overdrive, or super overdrive type sound>. Definately useable.. The clean channel doesn't distort too much at loud volumes,, I play Jonny Marr or Edge (u2) style guitar riffage, and it's very fitting.. The VOX name has a lot of influence.... The real winners are the reverb and vibrato channels. They sound wonderful! The amp has alot of confidence. Listen, folks, you're paying 200 bux. You're not going to get an AC-30, or a Fender Twin. So don't bitch. WHat you DO get is an amp that COMPETES on that level, for 200 bux! There is absolutely NOTHING on the market within $300 of this price that comes even remotely as close to the quality of sound and features as the Vox Cambridge. It's not the greatest amp ever made in history folks, but it's an AFFORDABLE BEAUTIFUL AMP! It's about time!!!
I'm giving it a 10 because it addresses a LONG NEGLECTED audience -the budget minded... A teenager could afford this amp, and proudly keep it his whole life. (unlike a crate, or a silly fender practice amp)

This Vox is pretty reliable. I've heard of problems with the volume dropping after a certian amount of playing. I have even experienced this once or twice. My particular vox has been pretty %100 reliable. I've not taken it gigging much so I don't know if it holds up against rough and rugged treatment.
Replacing the preamp tube will solve the volume drop problem... Since I've experienced little or no reliability problems, i'm giving it a 8... I'm really pleased with this amp. I'd give it a 9 if I didn't have the volume problem. I'd give it a 10 if I felt more confident that it was tough. I'm not so sure..

I use a fender musicmaster, an electra pheonix and a Sammick Fender copy (aussie guitar). I use an ibanez tube screamer and Line 6 delay modeler, among other pedals. THe vox is really important to me.. if it was lost or stolen by the hamburglar to pawn for bic macs, I'd buy another. And then I would Kill Hamburglar and feed him to Mayor McCheese. So-so sound; not very good at emulating tube Vox amps, as I'd hoped. Also, it didn't play as loudly as other 30-watt solid-state amps like the Fender Champion, but still loud enough for solo practice (but not with others, or gigging).
I used a single-coil guitar. the sound wasn't bad for the money, but try before you buy. The amp didn't last long enough for me to try other guitars with it.

After about two days of minor use, the tremolo stopped working altogether; the vibrato was unreliable; and it became increasingly noisy on both channels after being on about ten minutes. I don't feel the need to repeat any information from previous reviews. I took the advice about switching out the preamp tube. I ordered a 12AX7-R2 and 12AY7 from Groove Tubes (the NOS are too spendy for me!) and the sound I get out of the 12AY7 is much more to my liking. Much better bass response and lower gain. I can now switch back and forth between channels without adjusting my pickup volumes. Before, I had to turn the treble pickup almost all the way down and crank the bass EQ on the preamp to get a decent, full tone. I am playing a late 80's Les Paul Standard.

This amp is very versatile. Clean channel is real nice, could use a Mid knob though. Lead channel is quite felxable with gain boost and mid boost along with Gain, Treble, Bass, Volume. No FX loops. I never use the Headphone jack, but i am pretty sure its there. I wish this thing had a mid knob on both channels but ohh well. Also I am probably going to get the footswitch soon, but it would have been nice to be included. I use this amp mostly in my house for practice, but in emergancies this thing steps up and handles any gig I've ever had (if you mic it). Once i even had to play bass through it and it held up... kind of... I would say it is about average volume for 30 Watts. The single preamp Tube goes along way, but dont mistake this thing for a tube amp.

I use a custom imitation Gibson LesPaul. Great guitar, old guitar. This amp is good for many styles. I play some Ska, Classic Rock, some newer stuff and alot of Praise Music for church through this thing and it all sounds good. Doesnt get noisy unless you really push the volume. This amp has a lot of features for such a low price. For around $200.00, you get two channels of sound (only one input though) and one of those has a tube in the preamp section to really shape the tone for vintage sounds. Along with that, you get foot-switchable reverb, tremolo and boost for both the channel two gain and the mid range. The reverb is very nice and the tremolo feature is a nice added touch. Admittedly, I don't own any other amps, but then I have had this one for over two years now and I have even gigged with it and it definitely meets my needs very nicely. One thing I wish it did have though is an effects loop, but I haven't had problems with plugging the effects straight in.

This amp really shines in the tone department, if you are looking for that vintage clean tone with the occassional tube distortion. If you want to rock out with metal music or something like that, this may not be your cup of tea. The sounds I favor are those vintage tones, and for the price of this amp you can have that without spending a fortune. Personally, I love the tone of this amp and for the money I paid, I feel like I got a bargain here.

I have dragged it to band practice, left it in my car while I was at work, gigged in the hot sun with it and I have never had even so much as a hiccup out of it. Every time I power it up, it works like the day I bought it. Don't get me wrong, I haven't abused this amp tremendously, but I have given it a fair amount of real use without any problems at all.

I have been playing for over 30 years. I play a 2000 Rickenbacker 360, a 2002 Fender American Stratocaster, and a Yamaha Acoustic guitar through this amp using various multi-effect modeling units (Digitech RP-200, Korg PX3 & PXR4). I often find myself not using any of the effects, and just plugging my Ric straight into the amp for that classic sound. As I said earlier, I wish this unit had an effects loop simply because I think it quiets down the ambient noise, but the gate/nr supplied with the units do a passable job of that. When I plug straight in, the amp is as clean and quiet as you can imagine. I love the foot-switchable features (I have the 2 optional dual footswitch Vox pedals) to be able to switch between a clean tone and that tube-enhanced distorted tone. This may not be for everyone (namely grunge, heavy metal folks would be disapointed), but for the market it is aimed at is was a great deal. I really don't understand why Vox decided to discontinue this model, but I suspect that the intended market was smaller than they anticipated and those who do still look for that classic 60's-70's sound can probably afford the AC30-TB which is the holy grail. I think that for roughly 1/5 the price of an AC-30, this little amp does many of the same things pretty darn well. Of course the AC-30 is a much better amp, but then it has a much higher price.

By main guitar is a souped-up standard Telecaster with a Seymour Duncan Hot Rails in the bridge and Seymour Duncan '48 Broadcaster in the neck. By turning the clean channel about halfway up and bumping up the treble a bit you can pretty much nail Springsteen's clean tone from his early albums, which is great for me since The Boss is my main man. I play pretty much traditional rock, such as Bruce, Bon Jovi, and Chris Isaak and my own compisitons in that genre along with U2 and R.E.M. This amp is very versatile and can cover all the sounds well. The Treble and Bass controls are detailed (a big difference between 5 and 7 on the Treble). With a lot of Reverb and a bit of Tremolo, you can absolutely nail the intro Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game". The more you crank up the volume, the better tone in both channels. You couldn't ask for more at this price.
The gain channels produces smooth, creamy overdrive. For classic rock overdrive sounds (such as Bruce) this is great. Probably wouldn't do for metal, but, as the old saying goes, that what pedals are for. This channel features 12AX7s in the preamp, and the tone is great, especially with the Mid Boost on. For some reason, though, it doesn't have as much volume in the gain channel as it does the clean.
No one is going to confuse this with one of The Edge's trademark AC30's, but it definetely has that VOX tone at a ridiculously cheap price.

For the price, you simply can't beat this amp (especially now that Musician's Friend has them on $200 clearance!). It produces excellent clean tones, rhythm and lead alike, and the gain channel is smooth and offers a singing tone to leads and rich, full power chords. As I said, its no AC30, but its worth at least $200 more than the $300 I paid for it. Do yourself a favor and pick this amp up if you have a chance, especially now that you can get it for south of $200. This is a great practice amp, great studio amp, and great small gig amp (obviously, with 30W and 1 x 10 it would need a mic for something bigger). I would definetely purchase it again, and can't stress enough what a bargain it was.

I wasn't really into Vox at all. Dad Got me turned on to them. He told me to Buy this and Just see. Well I did And WOW! Was he right. I am a converted Vox man now. I realize this is just a little 1 10", but it could hang with the best of them. I run a RP2000 thru to it for some really mean Distortion, Just to get the sound I like. But when it comes to Clean Surf, Rockabilly, That kinda stuff....Just plug the ol Casino right into it... Features are pretty nice, EASY..

This amp is really deceiving. You look at it and think hmmm another little no sound amp, WELL PLUG IN AND YOU WILL SEE YOU ARE WRONG.
I am in the works of getting a Buckingham head, got the Cab all done. So this should be real fun...

Been playing for many years and have been looking for a small amp for home use "have like five different ones". Really rare to find an amp with reverb and tremolo these days. Have a fender twin, but a few more bucks! Tried a crate DXJ112 and you can read my report under price paid "too much"-what a piece of shit, really. Back to the vox..I love surf music and the tremolo is really nice. You just can't get the same effect with a plug in box for some reason, it just doesn't sound right..has to be in the amp. Reverb is a spring unit (which you can hear if you set the amp down a too hard) and reminds me of my first Crown amp back in the 60's. This may be the vibration that some of the other users are writing about....Hey $199 is a steal for this thing. If it lasts I will be happy, real happy. It has an overdrive and distorts pretty good and actually sound decent at lower levels which is good for the house. I am real pleased with this dude, believe me if I wasn't you would be reading another "crate" review.

All others stay away from this worthless piece of junk. The "noise" this thing makes is beyond description. "There is no tone in Cambridgeville, this amplifer has struck out!" Vox should be ashamed.

I usually use my Fender strat through this. Its was made to be used with single coils. I also have a '57 gold top les paul, but I plug that through my Marshall 2x12 combo - which was made for each other too! Cranked the Cambridge up and its noisy.. what do you expect?
Not a high gain amp by no means, but a more "tone" amp. When I plug my strat straight in I can get some mellow Clapton sound and with my Dan echo, I get nice u2, and pink floyd sounds. This is a great amp for the money, plus it has avery nice celestion blue back 10" speaker.

I've been playing for seven years, three in a serious band. We've recorded a cd two years ago and are starting a second this summer. I will definatly use this amp to record clean guitar sounds . I love to play finger style blues like Clapton, Jeff beck and Eric Johnson, so this amp is great for that. It sounds best with a strat or telecaster.

I bought this VOX Cambridge 30 Reverb combo amp new at Guitar Center (Seattle) at a close-out sale price of $179. I was looking for a good quality practice amp for under $200 and this amp fits the bill perfectly. I tried out several other amps in this price range: Crate GFX-15 (nice effects, decent distortion, but generic sound), Fender Frontman's (LOUD, but horrible sounding),Fender Champion 30 (ok, mediocre tone), the smaller 15 watt VOX Pathfinder (ok, but no reverb), and a Fender Blues Junior (LOUDER, but not better SOUNDING than the Cambridge, and costs $200 more). In terms of great vintage tone and over-all sound, the Cambridge 30 was a no-brainer. Also, a great steal at $179...normally sells for $299.
Features: (on the one I finally purchased, they ALL WORK...)
30 watt combo amp
2 channels (clean and clean/overdrive)
12ax7 pre-amp tube
10? Celestion Bulldog speaker
Built-in reverb and tremolo
Mid-range boost and gain boost (channel 2)
Headphone and speaker outputs
I am an intermediate level guitar player (about 6 months). At this point I'm mostly concentrating on 60's brit-rock bands because the guitar parts are not exceedingly overwhelming, and other types of 'rhythm guitar' style songs. For these types of music, this VOX Cambridge 30 is perfectly suited.

SOUNDS: 10 (the dropdown box had garbled characters)
I play a Fender 62 Custom Telecaster Reissue, and this amp is perfect for it's classic vintage tone, especially if you like playing Beatles, Stones, Kinks, etc. Also very good for more modern rock like R.E.M, U2, and Nirvana (clean stuff).
The Reverb on this amp is absolutely killer (on mine, anyway, much DEEPER and ECHO-Y than even the Fender Blues Junior). The clean channel is very bright and clear with a bell-like chime with no background noise or hiss. Perfect for jangly Beatles or R.E.M. stuff.
Channel 2 has a gain and mid-range boost. You can dial in all sorts of bluesy and grundgy tones by adjusting the volume and gain controls accordingly. I particularly like the overdrive boost...the distortion is not especially BRUTAL, but you can get great vintage over-driven tube sounds (like 'The Who Live At Leeds'). Back off the boost a bit and you can recreate that classic Beatles/Stones 'Paperback Writer/Brown Sugar' type of distortions.
This amp is NOT for METAL Styles...you'll need a quality distortion box if that's what you?re looking for.
(NOTE : with the Cambridge 30, you?ll need to crank your guitar?s volume control up FULL to drive the pre-amp tube to achieve a maximum overdrive effect...at least on mine...)
Oh yeah, this amp comes with built-in Tremolo also. Nice feature, especially if you like songs that use it...turn on the variable speed tremolo and you can get sounds just like 'Born On The Bayou', ?Come As You Are?, etc.
ANOTHER NOTE: The Cambridge 30 is plenty loud enough for home practice, jamming with another guitarist, or recording. However, I don't think it has enough volume for performances (especially a band with a loud drummer). In that case you will probably need to mike it thru the PA system or output it to a larger power amp or speaker cabinet.

This is a tough call...
I went thru FOUR(4)! NEW! VOX Cambridge 30's before I found one where ALL THE FEATURES ACTUALLY WORKED!! On two the tremolo was completely non-functioning, the mid-range boost didn't work, and the volume was feeble...a third one sounded like something straight from HELL (screechy and tinny, with no bass, reverb, or tremolo but, it was extremely LOUD!)...and these were straight out of the box...
At this point I should have had my sanity checked because I spotted a floor model and decided to try it out...and I guess it was the luck of the draw, because this one sounds absolutely sublime, and everything works...so I'm keeping my fingers crossed...

OVERALL RATING: 10
Overall I really enjoy this amp, and the great tones I can get out of it...it also has that classic VOX appearance, complete with the diamond-quilt grill cloth, and funky chicken-head controls.
If it was lost, I'd been bummed because this is a great sounding amp and VOX has recently discontinued the Cambridge line, so I probably couldn't replace it...if it were stolen, I'd been filled with homicidal rage...nuff said...
There's nothing I really don't like about this amp. If I had to nit-pick, I wish the 12AX7 pre-amp tube was more accessible...you have to remove the entire chassis to access it. No big problem, as I wasn't planning on replacing it soon anyway, but probably will one day just to see how it affects the overall sound. It would also be nice if the footswitch were included?but at only $30 extra, I?m not gonna complain too much.
The VOX Cambridge 30 Reverb appears to be built very solid (given that you the one you purchased actually worked). Be nice if it had corner protectors, that's about all I can think to improve the cabinet (And making the pre-amp tube more accessible).
Anyway, this amp is perfect for practice and jam sessions, recording, and possibly small venue performances. If you're in the market for an inexpensive 30 watt amp with a great vintage Brit-Rock tone, the VOX CAMBRIDGE 30 Reverb is a great choice. (BUT BE SURE to CHECK ALL THE FEATURES FIRST...)

Fine spring reverb & fantastic "Vox" tremelo - mid range boost, gain boost, bass and treble controls on valved pre-amp channel, and simple bass and treble control on "clean" solid state channel. Provides plenty of versatility to dial in a broad range of sounds.

Playing Strat (SSH) -- primarily jazz influenced blues & vintage rock. The clean channel is sweet and breaks nicely at 75% -- the valved pre-amp side delivers a true "Vox" sound at low-medium overdrive and moderate volume (70 - 75%). To gain maximum benefit of the Vox tone, this amp works well in a small venue, practice and/or recording. If you need more puch, you'll want to run it through your PA or you'll want to mic it, but the sound is outstanding in the 65 to 75% range (which at 30W RMS is not going to blow out any windows.)

Good features for this price, including two channels, overdrive, reverb, and tremolo as well as headphone jack, external speaker out, and line out. However, this amp just screams for a footswitch, and I wish one had been included. Also, the speaker is wimpy, and needs to be upgraded. And the preamp tube is mediocre quality. For 200 bucks, though, I guess I shouldn't complain.

The clean sound is excellent, and adjusting the gain to moderate distortion sounds good as well. Adjusting the gain to high-level distortion, however, the sound falls quite a bit short. The mid boost doesn't help much, either. You are probably better off using a pedal for high-level crunch. Upgrading the speaker and preamp tube might help, too. But overall this is a nice sounding amp. I play a '62 RI Strat, and it sounds great through this amp.

Used Vox Cambridge 30 Reverb. Serial #733 so I'm guessing it is a couple years old. Comes with 2 channels, a solid state clean channel and a gain channel with a 12AX7 preamp. Has separate treble/bass controls for each channel, gain channel has gain control and midrange boost. Also includes tremolo and reverb, and footswitch, headphone, line out, and external speaker jacks. Has a nice 10" Celestion Bulldog speaker. Excellent features for the price; a more usable gain channel and I would have rated it a 10 (see below).

I'm using it with a Squier Standard Strat that I modded to reduce pickup noise/hum. My effects are a Boss CS-3 Compression Sustainer, an Ibanez TS-7 Tubescreamer, and Boss DD-3 Digital Delay. This is currently my only amp. I find it to be very versatile for the music I like to play (U2/REM/Radiohead). It has a distinct sound, not quite like an AC-30 (not as good of course but 6-7x cheaper), but unmistakably Vox. It has more of a chimey sound with warmer mids than other amp brands.
The clean channel is superb for the price. There is some noise at high volumes but I am sure it is from my cheap stock pickups. I considered buying a footswitch, but I never use the gain channel so I decided it wasn't worth it. The gain channel in contrast to the clean channel seems muddy and somewhat muted. I couldn't find a good overdriven sound and I think it's worth using a stompbox instead. I might change the stock tube to see if that improves the tone. I owned a Vox Pathfinder that also had a nice clean channel but a muddy gain channel, not sure if this is a characteristic of lower-end Voxes. The tremolo and reverb are nice features, I don't use the tremolo much but the reverb adds a realistic touch.
The clean sounds alone are worth it for the amp, so I'll give it a 9.

I'm not sure if this is indicative of actual support but from what I've heard they do not offer the best support, at least in the US. Hopefully I won't have to deal with them (and since I'm not the original owner I doubt the warranty would apply to me anyway).

I just received my new VOX Cambridge 30 Reverb amplifier last evening. I ordered it from Musician's Friend on a Friday, late afternoon and received it on the following Tuesday. Shipping was only $8.15. That's pretty good. The amp is "new," so I can't tell you "when" it was made. I spent the entire evening "exploring" its
tones and sounds and I like it very much. 30 Watts is enough for me. Most of my work is practice and small venues. I'm not going to be playing Yankee Stadium any time soon. I think the amp has plenty of versatility and sound capabilities -- although I obviously need to explore it further. I play lots of 60s music and those tunes sound great on this VOX amp. Let's be honest with ourselves: it really doesn't matter that the amp is built in Korea. The components don't come from Korea. Furthermore, it's my personal observation that Asian people normally take more pride in their workmanship than most Americans do anyway. They feel "disgraced" if they don't do their best, and they'd get fired too !!! Now argue with that !!! It's a "pretty" looking amp with fine attention to detail and plenty of features.

I have several guitars: VOX Mark III Custom "Brian Jones" model, Rickenbacker 360-12, Gibson ES-335, Epiphone Explorer "Beast" and others. The VOX sounds especially great through this amp, playing the old British Invasion tunes and early Rolling Stones songs. I have not explored too much in the distorted range, but other sounds like reverb and tremolo are very nice. There's plenty of volume and tone control as well.

I have been playing for 38 years. I've played professionally on a local level, been on local television and played before crowds as large as 2,000 people. My last amp was a Marshall Valvestate and I sold it yesterday to a co-worker. It was too much of a "screamer" for me. I chose this amp because it's the right size for me and has the features I want to play the songs I enjoy playing. Also, it's a VOX. VOX has been owned and/or produced by several parent companies over the years. It's just a "name."

This review (sort of), is for those of you that have had sound/reliability problems with your Cambridge 30 Reverb -i.e the amp cuts out, distorts badly, volume and controls no longer work, etc. I was having the same problems with two of these amps. But, I believe I have found the cure. A magical repair (not really) that has worked on both of mine. Its very simple.
Sound Quality
:
No Opinion
Here's what I did in two separate cases to remedy the issues: Insure that the preamp tube is seated well. But don't bear-down too hard on the tube or you may break some soldering connections on the tube socket. Plug a guitar into the amp with the guitar volume down. Turn on the amp with any knobs all the way down, and with any boost switches set to "off". Let it sit there idleing for about 40 minutes to 1 hour. "Magically" (hopefully), when you come back and turn it up to play, everything will be fine. It worked for me both times. I'm not sure why, but it would seem logical that the preamp does not like to work hard (or at all) when first turned on. Once the sound goes bad, it will stay bad every time you turn it on....until you perform the above.
After doing the "wait" thing, hold off a couple minutes after powering-up each time before applying big amounts of volume. And lastly, the good news is that since doing this, both my Cambridge's have worked beautifully, without problems, and with great tone. Good Luck on yours.

2001 model, Im sure by now you know all the features. Two channels, one solid state and one tube. Decent amount of features, will use pedals if I want to alter my sound heavily so what more do you need? Dont use the Tremolo much though although its nice to have it when I want to play brit-popesue stuff. Dont be fooled by the 30 watts...contrary to what some say you CAN gig with this amp provided its a small venue, most intelligent people use PA's when gigging and with this its no problem. I really wish it had come with a footswitch...come on VOX!! I would have paid a bit more if necessary.

I play mostly indie/noise rock with some blues and brit pop type stuff. The VOx is great for all of it.
I think any problems people are having are going to come from the gear you are using as a whole....I currently play a gibson sg thorough this thing with 490R/T humbuckers...clean channel is great and can be tweaked a lot for a range of 'vox' tones. The second channel (also contrary to what some have said) sounds very good. You can get some nice distortion and its obvious its powered by a tube. I currently have not changed out the sovtek tube it came with but in my opinion sovtek stuff is not that bad. The amp is also quite loud when you hit the gain boost...I can easily use this thing for practice with a loud drummer (and I was pretty surprised myself) someone on here made a comment about changing the speaker for a 'high quality weber'...my opinion? why? The Celestion it comes with is british made, and celestion makes very high quality speakers, I was actually surprised an amp at this price HAD a celestion in it...

I play a PRS Singlecut, A Les Paul Classic, Epiphone Les Paul Standard
and a EVH Peavey Wolfgang Arch Top. of all the above units this amp seems to like the low output Epiphone Humbuckers Best, clean channel sounds real sweet. Over drive channel comes along nice with this guitar also. stay away from high output humbuckers with this amp.
If you want Heavy Distortion and brutal grind I would offer a Peavey 5150 or a Mesa Single Rectifier. (works for me) both channels offer
good bang for the Buck!

I only play this Amp for about one hour or so every other day and have had no problems with it so far in that respect. I have noticed a fluttering of the speaker or buzzing noise from the chassis. I've checked everything to make sure it was tight, but still it's there.
I notice when I back the Reverb off to 1/4 it drops off, so I'm guessing it has something to do with the Reverb. I feel that changing the speaker to a good Weber! might add alot to this units sound. Also I have replaced the Overdrive channel tube to a 12AU7 N.O.S. and this add loads of warmth to the drive channel.

People, remember what we have here, a Korean Made Budget Amp. I don't expect it to sound like my 5150'S or MESA or Marshall JCM800 But it does fine for what it is. I'd give it a 10 on looks, Yes it's cheap made, but remember the price. Buy the Chrome stand from Northcoast music.com $59.95 replace the speaker and driver tube, plug in a low output humbucker equipt guitar and rock out. Thats what it's all about! and by the way, production has ended on the Canbridge Line
so hang onto your's unless you can afford and AC-30 if so! go for it!

Brand new Vox Camrbidge 30 Reverb, bought in January, 2002. Made in Korea with a British Celestion speaker. Built probably in late 2000 or 2001, considering that there weren't many left at the store. Nice amount of features for the price, as the tremolo is a nice touch along with the reverb. My styles range from jazz/blues/rock/noise like 95% of the people who read these things, so we all have a pretty common goal: tone. The two channels are pretty standard with smooth, clean tones on the regular channel and crunchy bite on the second channel. Maybe my ear isn't as sensitive as some other people who reviewed this amp, but the distortion sounded fine to me. It's got the footswitch/speaker outlet/headphone jack on the back and footswitch on the top. The gain boost for the second channel is nice bonus, because gain distortion shouldn't always equate brain hemmorrhage. Just enough to make it a little louder. 30 watts makes this louder than my old little practice Fender until my wife let me go with something better. I haven't gigged it yet, but why would you gig without using the PA anyway? Easy to carry too. I haven't used my DigiTech RP100 with it yet, as I want to get used to it's sound before I start messing with it. It's pretty standard for features, so I'll give it a 7. Why won't they include the footswitch?! I'd have given it an 8 if they had included one.

I've used my MIJ Fender Stratocaster Foto-Flame with this, as well as my Les Paul Custom, and so far, both respond well. I will agree with another reviewer that the single coils sound better than humbuckers, but since I'm not a professional musician, to my untrained ears, it sounds okay. Actually, I tested this amp at the store with a Mexi-Tele, and it sounded so good that my next guitar may be a maple-necked Tele (Japanese or USA, though). The sounds range from clean and glassy but with some tweaking you'll get some thick, muddy sounds out of it. Created some nice, smooth distortion with it as well, so it covers all the bases I need. As much as your amp can produce, a lot of your sound will also depend on your guitar. I'm surprised at the number of people with "heavy metal" guitars (BC Rich, Jackson, I've-Been-Had, et cetera) who complain about sound quality. Well, those guitars probably weren't designed with Vox in mind, so look at all of your gear if you're not happy with your sound. The sound is a big improvement over my little Fender, and after testing several amps at the store, I thought the sound quality of the Vox was more versatile than anything else in it's price range. If you pay under $300, what do you expect? It's not going to sound like an $800 amp, now will it? I probably will replace the tube at some point just to see if it affects the quality.

So far, I haven't gigged with it, but who on Earth does a gig without some form of backup? As I only have one little 12AX7 tube to replace, I don't expect much servicing in the future. Can I depend on it? I don't think I would've bought it if it wouldn't be dependable...

I've been playing for ten years and probably sound awful. Okay, I can carry a tune, but GIT grads have nothing to worry about. I've had a Rickenbacker 360, a MIJ Paisley Tele, MIJ '72 Telecaster Custom, my trusty Alvarez DY-75, an Ovation CS-257, my '89 Les Paul Custom, and my Fender Strat. Nothing groundbreaking, I grant you, but I've been happy with them. I've been hurting for a new amplifier for months now, and my wife made me a happy man when she said I could buy one without fearing a divorce. Maybe it was the history associated with Vox, the artists who used them, or maybe just the price. C'mon, let's face it; everyone and their brother has a Fender. They probably opened King Tut's tomb and found a Princeton Chorus. I wanted something new that sounded different and the Vox Cambridge 30 Reverb delivers. I haven't played a gig with it, but I'm looking forward to breaking it in and eventually hitting the stage with it. In case you haven't noticed, I'm not playing your local arena anytime soon, so for the price, this amplifier suits a bedroom rock star just fine.

I play my Epiphone Dot (ES 335) through this amp and it sounds great!! I'm also used my friends mysterious vantage (we think it's from the 70's but we really don't know) and that also sounded kickass. I play a lot of weezer and things similar to that. I crank the gain and use the gain boost (but not the mid boost) and I can get a really nice grungy sound. The clean channel is also really warm and nice with the Dot. Crank up the clean and that single tube really makes some nice overdriven tones. I'm not a huge fan of reverb but I find that just a little of it sounds nice with distortion abd when I'm in the mood I break out a little surf guitar with my treble pickup. I've also noticed that there is a lot of channel 2 bashing here, I really like the gain this amp gives and I can get a great low end tone with this amp. Maybe it's because most of the people here are using fenders but my epi has no problem in getting that low tone. I can totally get metallica low on this and if I use my marshall jackhammer I can get even lower playing stuff like deftones with relative ease. I start getting distortion on the clean channel when it hits about 11-12'o'clock... I almost with I could get louder with my clean, but that overdrive is friggin sweet so I will live.
Keep in mind that the last amp I had was a peavy rage 128 and it was a piece of crap (despite the fact that I played a 5 string bass through it at full volume and it didn't explode).

On the 5th day I noticed a little rattle and I was a bit angry cause it was so new, but the nut on the input jack was loose so I just tightened it and it was fine. I've been playing for 4 years and I love this amp. It's my first "big" amp and I think we're going to get along great. For other gear, I have an epiphone les paul 100 and an epiphone 12 string acoustic. I also have the dot that I got used and a really old beater acoustic guitar that I started on. I run a bespeco weeper wah (friggin brutal) and a marshall jackhammer into this amp but I haven't been using them lately, the amp doesn't need help with the distortion usually. I also have an old DOD supradistortion 55b that doesn't like to work and a Zoom 509 dual power modulator that I hardly ever use.
if this amp were stolen or lost I would cry, because I can't afford a new one. I don't hate anything about this amp so far except that they didn't have a reverb twin and I only got the one speaker... but then again that twin would have been out of my price range. I was also a bit miffed that the store I bought it from didn't have any footswitched but that's not the amps fault. When I was shopping for it I was playing guitars though this monster crate amp they had there and I thought it sounded good until I plugged into this thing. They had a fender princeton there too but I just shrugged it off once I played this. Friggin sweet amp for super cheap... even in canadian funds :)

Well, you know all the features. I use the reverb a lot, but I almost never use the tremolo, although it's nice to have on some occasions.
I mainly use this amp playing at home, since I have some trouble finding a good drummer for our band. And because we are just a biginning band, we won't play big gigs, so the sound volume is good.

I play a B.C. Rich Warlock, with 2 DiMarzio humbuckers.
My music style is metal, although I sometimes play different music, the amp is good for it all. The distorion on channel 2 sucks if you play metal, but it's good for a little grunge sound.
A lot of you guys say this amp in NOT for metal: (i quote)
>>> NOT for Metallica boys.
>>> You won't be playing any Pantera with this thing
>>> ...but when was the lat time you heard some metal guy rave about
the "killer distortion" that he got from his vox....?
>>> Not recommended for metal-head, this amp is more for players with
more discerning tonal requirements.
These are VERY STUPID things to say. Like metal is about butchering your sound with you distorion pedal. No. Metal is more than that. Haven't you ever heard metal? Don't forget GOOD metal is music (not talking Limp Bizkit or Korn) Beatifull clean sounds and melodic aspects combine with rough distortion... Therefor this amp is GREAT for metal. I play through a Boss DS-1 Distorion, and I love the full tones this amp gives. If I push the distortion all the way, it sounds VERY heavy, especcially if the Bass on the amp is set on a rather high level.
I use the reverb very much, it gives a great sound to solo's and melodic lines !!! Wish I had bought this amp a long time ago.
The clean channel stays almost perfectly clean on higher levels, dispite my humbuckers.

I just got this amp in December of 2000. I paid $275. for it and I would have paid more. The features are adequate. Although I do like the sound versitility I get in channel two with the mid-boost and gain boost. An effects loop would be nice (although I play straight without effects). Also, it would be nice if Vox included a foot switch.

Currently I'm using a Fender Strat '57 American Vintage reissue (awesome guitar!!!) and a '77 Les Paul Custom. I play blues, rock, classic rock, etc. I bought the amp for practice and did an in-store sound comparison with Peavy, Marshall, and Fenders amps in and just above this price point. EXCELLENT TONE!!! The Cambridge 30 just totally out-classed all of them. The 30 Watts is also plenty to drive my 4x12 Duncan cab. I use a '69 Plexi head into my duncan bottom, and when i plugged the Vox into the cab. at rehearsal one night, the guys in the band were very impressed! It's a relatively quiet amp through the volume range. Channel 1 (Clean) has such a beautiful tone. The notes ring with a shimmer that never sounds harsh, yet it has a substancial bottom and a full rich tone throughtout the whole sound spectrum. I A/B it with my Marshall and the tone fills the band sound beautifully. Although, I don't use the distortion channel (2) gigging. You could gig small-medium clubs with this amp but to make sure it gets out there (I have a very LOUD drummer) I put it through the PA. This channel is also VERY responsive to pick attack dynamics and breaks up beautifully when I want it to. It's hard to believe that Vox can produce such beautiful clean tone with a solid state channel. All those wanking modeling amps should take note of what they've done to produce this sound. Channel 2 (Dist) is fairly versitile. It has a pleasant but slightly muddy overdrive. But with some tweaking you can get some very nice overdriven tones. it handles single coil PUs better than my Les Paul Humbuckers (I have a stock PAF in the neck position and a '70s DiMarzio SDHB in the bridge position.) That is when the distorted tone really muddies up a bit. If you want metal sounds you definately have to front end it with a distortion pedal. Not recommended for metal-head, this amp is more for players with more discerning tonal requirements.

Well, I NEVER play a gig without two guitars and two amps (not at the same time) I just believe in having a backup, because you just never know and it's better to be safe than sorry. Although in terms of reliability, I'd have to say it's a reliable amp. It's never broken down yet.

I'm been playing for 33 years. I have a Sigma acoustic with a homemade pickup, an Ovation Applause Strat copy set up for slide and tuned open, an Ibanez acoustic 12-string, a Kramer Bass, a Fender '57 American Vintage Strat (my baby!), and a '77 Gibson Les Paul Custom. I play through a '69 Marshall Plexi had into a Seymor Duncan 4x12 cabinet loaded with Celestions. My signal path goes: guitar > Cry Baby Wa > Tuner (Rack)> A/B switch > (A chain) (rack) Peavey DeltaFex > Hush IIC (usually "off" for better tone) > Power Attinuator > Marshall Head. (B chain) direct into the Vox Cambridge 30R Clean Channel (1) > PA.
If this amp wer elost or stolen, I'd replace it as soon as possible!
i love the clean tones of this amp and IMHO there isn't an amp that would suit me better in this regard 9well, there might be some exceptions, but NOT for this price or even hundreds more). There is noting I hate about it.
The comparisions i made are outlined in one of the other categories. It won the test against 3 other major brands in price points at and above the Cambridge. The Vox Cabridge has superior tone and the Celestion bulldog is beautifully voiced.
Too bad it didn't include the footswitch, but it an easy thing to get.
If you care about your tone GET THIS AMP! If you care about spending money GET THIS AMP!

I play several G&L's some of which would sound great played through a radio and some can sound awful depending on the amp. To my ear they all sound great with this amp.
I am shocked how good this amp actually sounds. I had absolutely no desire to play it until I tried it out in the store. I bought it instantly. Once I got it home... things have only impoved.
I play alot of different styles blues/jazz/roots rock type of stuff an this amp is perfect for all of them. The clean channel with the treble way down and the bass way up is exactly the sound I have been looking for. Very tight bottom end and all notes can be heard.
The gain channel is amazingly dynamic. I can go from almost clean to dirty by pick attack alone. What an amp should do. You will definately not get anything close to high gain with this amp. It is not a Marshall or a Boogie.
I would guess it is a little underpowered and probably would not be the answer for a loud band like ours. But two of them in stereo would probably be great.

I also play a Rivera Fandago which was almost 10x the price of the Vox. Does the Rivera sounds better? Obviously it does but on a pure dollar thing it does not sound 10x better.
If this was stolen. I would buy another instantly, at twice the price. At one point I was wondering if Vox screwed up, as something that sounds this good can't be this cheap.

Ok, this is where I must say what I think. I bought this amp very early on, serial #200. I was very excited to get it and loved its classic looks and general vibe. I liked how it sounded but wished it was louder and had a bigger speaker. I played it on stage about 4 times and in practice. I plugged it in one night about 7 months after I bought it and it was distorted as hell with no volume. I bought it in the States and the warranty was not valid in Canada so I was on my own. I called the dealer, Britishsound in Kansas who sold it to me and Dave and the gang were as helpfull as they could be but the chip that was gone was virtually unavailable. I wrote Vox and they didn't get back to me, I wrote Korg USA and they didn't get back to me. I tried Korg Canada and they sent me a brochure outlining the features of the new Cambridge 30R. I waited a respectfull amount of time and tried again...again I was ignored, not even a reply telling me to get lost. So my amp sits there for 3 months...no one can fix it, it cost to much to ship back to the dealer so I wait and wait and wait. Finally the dealer locates a chip and sends it to me. We install it and the chip pops again. This amp is a piece of garbage. Don't waste your money, the service sucks and I mean SUCKS...The once venerable VOX corporation couldn't even see fit to answer my email and KORG USA...forget it. Don't buy this amp, if you do you will never get the proper service you deserve as a paying customer. Customer service is probably not a phrase you hear often in either company boardroom. I would rate the service at 0 but the option is not here so I will rate it at 1

See above...from my experience, the service from the manufacturer and distributor is dismal and embarrasing to say the least. I wouldn't buy a VOX amp again if a Beatle came with it. And a warning if you buy out of your country...your warranty is not valid in the country where you live. BEWARE again I'd rate this a 0 but it is not an option

Doesn't matter...the amp doesn't work so it's a moot point. Again I stress that Britishsound in Kansas were terrific, I'm sure they would have replaced it if I had sent it back but it would have cost more to do that than the amp was worth.

Without the booster one can get nice vintage type of sound. With fuzz, it is possible to get very 'funny' sound, if you put some gain from the vox. Probably made in 2000.
Very versatile for clean tones and mild rock tones.
It has two channels clean and overdrive. The overdrive channel has a gain boost switch for more buzz.
I wish it had an effects loop, I'd use my boss DD-5 to get some cool strat driven Edge- U2 and Andy Summers tones.
I also wish the preamp tube was easier to access. You have to take the amp chassis out of the cabinet to re-tube.
Use it gigging with friends and @ home for practice.
I dont use the tremolo that much.
Barely loud enough with a hard hitting drummer. Fortunately it sounds fuller the louder your push it.

I use my USA Kramer Classic strat copy with this amp. It has Fender tex-Mex pickups.
Gets some stellar clean tones and mildly overdriven tones. The clean channel is fat and warm. It has a nice sparkle to the top end without being harsh. Bottom is BIG!! tons of bass in this guy, especially with the neck single coil, while still retaining the high end clarity.
Switching to the overdrive channel gives some warm fat tube driven overdrive tones. This channel impresses me with all 3 pickup locations. Blues tones are warm and resonant with the neck and middle pickups. I can get some cool Dick Dale jangly tones with the bridge pickup as well. Can also get some sweek Peter Buck-REM jangle with the bridge pickup. Very versatile with strat pickups.
This amp like many others sounds better the louder its played. Bass is fatter and the high end becomes even clearer. Cranking the power amp section gives some mild overdrive tones as well.
The celestion bulldog speaker is voiced wonderfully, one of the best 10" guitar speakers out there IMNO.
I like this amp when used with low output single coils. High output pickups tend to sound harsh and sterile with this amp. I have several guitars with various pickups (Duncan Screamin deamon, distortion, Classic 59, Dimarzio tone zone, EMG 89 & SA, Schaller PAF, Bartolini active humbucker) Of all these PUs only the low output ones(Duncan 59, EMG SA, Fender strat) sound sweet. For my high gain tones I switch guitars and amps to a carvin 2x12 combo and a Kramer Baretta humbucker equipped guitar.
I bought this amp after demo-ing it at the shop. My intention all along has been to use it with low output single coils, for its clean tones and mild overdrive. I give it good marks for its clean tones and mildly overdriven tones with low output pickups.
DO NOT BUY THIS AMP IF YOU INTEND TO USE HIGH OUTPUT PICKUPS AND WANT MARSHALL / BOOGIE TONES!!!

86' Kramer USAPacer Deluxe, 88' Kramer USA Baretta, 87' Kramer USA Classic (strat like), 84' Kramer USA Vanguard, 87' Kramer misc parts guitar (focus ESP made body, Pacer Carerra neck), 88' Kramer Focus 2000 , 91' Fender Prodigy, 98' Hamer duo-tone, 86' Ibanez roadstar II.
For my high gain tones I use humbucker equipped guitars played through a carvin 2x12 tube combo. I would deffinitely buy it again if lost or stolen. It does what I want it to perfectly. I dont really care for the gain boost, and an effects loop would be sweet.
I compared it to a Line6 spyder and a peavey classic 30. All 3 are good amps, but the VOX sounded fuller when cranked at low gain. I also think the cellestion bulldog is a better sounding speaker, than the line6 or peavey speakers. The line 6 is more versatile though. and the Classic 30 has some really great tube tones.
Overall I give it an 8 because of its great clean channel.
DO NOT BUY THIS AMP IF YOU INTEND TO USE HIGH OUTPUT PICKUPS AND WANT MARSHALL / BOOGIE TONES!!! If this is your goal, look elsewhere (carvin, randall, peavey, hiwatt, laney)

I should start by saying that I am very pleased with the sound of this amp. Ch.1 is warm and the top end is articulate without cutting your head off. Ch.2 has some nice "gritty" tones- think U2 or a '68 bassman cranked all the way up. You won't be playing any Pantera with this thing... at least not without some help.
I recently converted from a mamoth rack system and 4x12 to the Cambridge 30 Reverb and I have nothing but fun playing this amp. I do like to get a more distorted sound than this amp wil allow, so I run a Rat 2 infront of it... bingo.... I can now get any sound I want. I love the tremello.

The reverb on this amp aint to bad but ive heard better.there are 2 channels but you only need one (youl only want to use one)the tremolo is alright but again ive heard better. Its nice lookin amp and could be mistaken for an older more expensive vox. Also is quite sizeable for a 30w

The distortion channel .well ive never heard such crap .if you want distortion buy a laney, marshall or fender but not this ,dont make the same mistake i did.the clean chanel is quite nice(well its vox) i use a boss blues driver .you can get some wicked indie rock tones ie stereophonicsetc.

This is the 2000 re-issue Cambridge 30 reverb with single speaker. Two channels - a clean channel with vol, bass & treble and a drive channel with vol, bass, treble and gain. In addition, there's a gain boost switch and a mid-range boost switch. Also master reverb and tremolo with depth & speed controls. Footswitch sockets for channel switching and for invoking the tremolo. Line out for recording. I give this a 10 in this category as it has all the essential features that I want ( namely, reverb, tremolo & fuzztone)

I use a Danelectro U2 re-issue with no other effects except sometimes a Vox wah-wah and also a stomp box made by Dememter Amplification called The Tremulator which is designed to replicate the tremolo of an early '60's Fender amp. In theory, the sounds for this thing should be perfect. The drive channel is excellent. I have read many derogotary comments about this channel both on this web site as well as in a number of guitar mags which leads me to think that I may be playing a completely different amp to everyone else (I am reviewing the Vox Cambridge 1 x 12 with reverb, 2000 model). Kick in the mid-range boost and put the gain on 1 o'clock position, reverb full on. That's a buzzy surf tone, reminiscent of the days when folks like Bo Diddley and Link Wray where experimenting with the possibilities of distortion. Turn the reverb down to about mid-way and invoke the gain boost. That's a rich fuzztone sound, snarling but classy. Turn the gain and reverb full on and , with the aid of a Vox wah-wah, you can nail that Stooges "Funhouse" sound perfectly. Also works excellently for narcotic drone-punk Spacemen 3 sounds. With the reverb & gain back to 2 o'clock position, turn the bass control to 3 o'clock & you get a really heavy , hairy sound. Ok, if I dig the sounds that this amp elicits so much, why do I only give it 5? Read on...

I have owned this for 1 month. Ordinarily, I would not post a review on this board unless I had owned a product for at least one year but I feel that this is a special case. You may have noticed that in my comments relating to sounds that I mentioned neither the clean channel nor the tremolo. That is because a mere 13 days after purchasing the amp (new), the output on the clean channel suddenly dropped, the bass control stopped working and the tremolo went completely dead. AFTER THIRTEEN DAYS!!!! So, I took it back to the store where I bought it from which cost me #40.00 (approx $60.00) in cab fare and they replaced it for me. Fourteen days later THE SAME FUCKING THING HAPPENS!!!! Now, I can't keep going back to the store because it's costing me a tiny fortune in taxi fares so I have decided just to live with it but I think it's totally fucking outrageous to pay money for something new which ceases to function properly after a few days. Vox are a bunch of assholes. I don't think that they bother to test these things properly. Like Fender, they are living off their brand name...a Vox amp manufactured today is not the same thing as one made in the '60's. I give the Cambridge a 1 in this category since there is no option in the drop box to give it a zero.

Actually I was quite impressed by the customer support. Within 45 mins after firing off a hostile email to them I recieved a reply, and not a generic one but a properly written one. Ok, their customer services is very efficient and deserves a 10 but as I am still stuck with a semi-functioning amp, I cannot post a rating here.

Potentially this should have been an amp to die for. When it worked, it proved to be a veritable encyclopedia of '60's sounds. Every single guitar sound made between 1961 & 1969 could be captured on this. With a Danelectro U2, I thought that I had found the perfect team. The clean channel had a beautiful chime. But the thing that I really dug was the tremolo. Tremolo is my favorite effect and much as I dig the Fender trem, to my mind the Vox one is the best. It has a kind of sterile quality which , when invoked, makes you feel as tho you are a participant in some kind of bizarre psychological experiment. However, this is an appallingly made piece of equipment. I don't think I'm being too demanding by expecting the fucking thing to work for longer than 14 days. I have been playing for almost 19 years and if there is one thing that I have learnt it is this: if you are not willing to shell out decent bucks, you are not going to get anything very good (even my Danelectro is severely limited). The Cambridge was made in Korea and I find that where guitar equipment is concerned, you should always buy something made in America instead of trying to cut corners. This is without question the worst piece of electronic equipment that I have ever bought.

I use a 96 american standard strat with a maple fretboard and stock pickups. I play a variety of pedals including but not limited to a sovtek muff (modified), an old boss ds-1 distortion, a jd-1 morley preamp pedal, mxr phase 90 resissue, sometimes a z00m 5O5 mulitefx for bedroom level distortions and effects. I then send it to the vox, which feeds into a marshall 4x12 with eminence speakers (it's a funny setup).
i play in a loud kinda throwback back, very organic rock and roll. i have been influenced a lot by newer bands as well - pumpkins, my bloody valentine, modest mouse and things like that. but the true base of my playing style and feel goes for bands like the who, cheap trick, the beatles, u2, rem, queen and things like that. the reason why i choose this amp is because a lot of my prime influences and the guitarists that popped my cherry were/are vox devotees. i'm talking about peter buck (rem), the edge (u2), all of the beatles and brian may (Queen).
a high volumes it is. i attribut this to my single coils and my pedals. the vox by itself is pretty quiet at high levels.
I think a large part of this amp's sounds lie within the speakers. those two celestions are pretty loud and have plenty of cut. the sounds are classic vox, chan 1 = glassy chan 2 = zingy dist. and a high levels a good "rick neilsen roar". plenty of throw with chann 2. it's actually pretty versitial.
chann 1 - like the other reviews stated - it can be pushed to a little zip. i use this channel for my pedals and what not.
the distortion chan is not brutal. you are not going to get an iomi-esque tone with this thing. like i said - think townshend, neilsen, the edge. very clean, lot's of punch. it sounds great. you will never see dimebag playing one of these - even with your thrashmaster pedal in front it will barely get you there. it's good for that clean roar.
if the wattage were pushed up to say, 40 or 50 watts and maybe another 12ax7 thrown in to both of the channs i would rate this a nine. it could be a little bit louder. but i think the key number with voxes is 30.

i probably wouldn't buy another one if it broke or got stolen. i would go for an old hiwatt, orange, marshall or an authentic vox.
i really dig the tremolo. the cosmetics (i'm gonna be very shallow here) are pretty cool. it's looks groover.

This amp is new -- made in 1999 or 2000. Although I prefer heavy distorted music, I'm just getting back into playing guitar after a long layoff and decided that I needed a good, clean amp for practising. This is ideal for that. The amp has two channels, one clean, and one distorted with a gain and a mid-range boost. There are reverb and tremolo controls. There's also a 12AX7 valve in the preamp, and several outputs including one for headphones.

I'm using a Jackson DK-3 (Duncan designed pickups) with this amp. Mostly, I play clean -- I'm trying to get better and not hide behind effects. However, the effects in the amp are decent. The reverb is good, the tremolo gets the job done. I find the distortion useless unless I hit the gain boost, and even then it's not enough for me -- I resort to my Boss Metal Zone or Marshall Jackhammer pedals when I feel like making noise. Any heavy distortion through this amp sounds muddy. The amp is not noisy by itself. When set clean, you can get a real warm, shimmering rhythm sound. The treble can be strong and soothing without being harsh. Good value for the money.

This amp isn't powerful enough for a serious gig. Besides, if I gig, I'll be looking for a hard rock/heavy metal style amp. Again, this thing is great for clean sounds and practising. I haven't had it long enough to decide if it's reliable.

I played from 1985-92, and then stopped playing until a few months ago. This is currently my main amp. I chose it over several others in the same general price range -- including Marshall (nice distortion, but no true clean sound), Peavey (non-descript sound), Trace Elliot (very plain tube tone), and Fender (same as the Trace Elliot). The Vox Cambridge has character and a retro vibe. It doesn't match up with all my gear (again, heavy distortion through this is muddy), but it sounds nice with my Crybaby Wah and my Boss Chorus. I'll probably get a Mesa/Boogie or a Marshall for heavier stuff when I regain my chops. But I'll hang onto the Vox -- it should be great for recording slow, moody tunes.

As previous reviews here do a nice job of describing this amp, I'll simply say that this amp is elegantly designed with just the right amount of real features without "token" knobs. It packs a great punch for its size and weight (seriously important for transporting around!), and looks phenomenal. Although this wouldn't be my choice for a metal sound, it's a great choice for clean or tunefully distorted audio.

I'm using a Mexican Standard Telecaster, making this package a great bang for the buck (I've never been a worshipper of high price tags). And as stated elsewhere, although the guitar is a little noisy (something that could be remedied if I were to replace the pickups for something a little upscale), the combination of the two is rather versatile and does what I'd like it to do with a nice '60's flair.
And though the distortion channel is nice for recording or playing when lower volume levels are required (like when the wife's home), the clean channel does break up artfully, especially for solid state, when opened up wide. It's not an AC30, but for the price it certainly has virtues. I'd consider this amp at a much higher price tag. Thank goodness I didn't have to. The only thing I noticed I didn't like was that the distortion channel was rather muddy. But I've learned that this might be due to the Sovtek tubes being used in the early ones being shipped because of supply. I'll find out more when I replace this tube. This does not affect the clean channel.

RATED AT 30 WATTS YOU MUST TURN IT UP TO 10 TO GET AN ALMOST USEABLE VOLUME TO GIG WITH.THE CLEAN TONE IS GOOD AND VERY VOXLIKE. NOT NEARLY LOUD ENOUGH FOR 30 WATTS THOUGH! NOW LET'S STEP ON THE LEAD CHANNEL. WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED?DID SOMEONE THROW A MOVING BLANKET OVER THE AMP? EVEN WITH A JAGUAR IT SOUNDS DARK.

This is a new made in Korea version of the Thomas Cambridge with a markedly similar cabinet to the vintage unit but different control panel that is more in keeping with the style of the AC30 (chicken head knobs and copper plexi). The amp boasts two channels that are switchable via footpedal as well as a mid range boost, gain switch, tremolo, reverb, line out, headphone out and a 12AX7 pre amp valve. Lots of features for such a low price. The reverb is a little weak but sufficient and the tremolo is very nice.

I use this amp with a phantom teardrop with stacked Kent Armstrongs, 62 re-issue stratocaster with vintage Fender pickups and an ovation celebrity. We play hits from the 50's, 60's and 70's so the vox tone really works for me. It's a little noisy with the strat but has a real vintage sound that is unmistakable to Voxheads. The celestion bulldog has a terrific tone and breaks up nicely at louder volumes. I would say that overall this is a great amp for those who would like a vox but can't afford the outrageous amount of money you have to pay for an AC15 or 30. The amp seems to have sufficient power for small to medium gigs and holds its own against my Tube Works combo and lead guitar players fender twin.

I had a Thomas Cambridge as well as a Super Berkeley for a while and they were brutally unreliable so I will bring my Tube works to gigs for a while until I'm satisfied that this amp will hold up. I assume it will as the fit and finish of the cabinet is terrific as well as the quality of the pots and switches.

Mine was new in 1965. I paid around $200 for it. The reverb could be a little overdone, and at full volume, it depended upon the guitar. I used a 1960 Gibson ES 350TD, same as Chuck Berry used, as pictured on "From London to Liverpool" alblum. Same guitar. It lacked a master volume, my only real complaint. It was a Thomas Vox, but it was tube.

I used this amp from 1965 until 1970. I played mostly Gibson hollow-body PAF's through it. It cut through drums and PA in small to medium gigs everywhere. Played Beatles to begin with, but Yardbirds and Stones and one hit wonders were fine too. Used it with the first effects known to man, always sounded good.

I bought it for looks, kept it for sound and reliability, can't say either was better than the other because both were awesome. If I could find a used one in decent condition and had the asking price on me, no problem, it would be mine. Thomas or no, this amp paid for itself in gig after gig until the Marshall sound outpowered it. It handled everything short of pure overdrive with PAF's. Not as good with Strats or singles, but loved those PAF's. Tough, reliable, unique sounding, louder than it had a right to be. Earned it's keep. Wish all my equipment had.

This is a 1966 Vox Cambridge Reverb. It's got three inputs, though I only use one. Its effects are tremolo and a noisy reverb. Although I only use this amp for recording and practicing at home, it could be loud enough for a small solo club gig. Though this is the solid state model, its tone is deep, warm, and beautiful. At low volumes, the 10" gold bull dog sounds nice and deep for such a small size.

I play my 56' danelectro baritone guitar (stock lipstick PUs), and tend to play the Camrbridge at pretty low volumes. For the kind of stuff I do at home (moody, sort of Morphinesque stuff), the Cambridge is perfect. I've also used it to record the Bari and a Strat, and I'm amazed at the variety of sounds you can get from it. The main drawback in recording this thing is that if you turn it up past, say, 6 or 7, it starts sounding... bad, for lack of a better word. So, again, at low volumes, sounds amazing, but don't don't push it.
