This amplifier is extremely versatile! I primarily use it for recording and practice. The mods that Trace at Voodoo Amps did to this little beast are amazing! He added a "Bottom" control which opens up the low end and adds very focused and tight bass response. The added "Global" control allows me to sweep the entire mid spectrum of the whole amp to dial in the best possible response for my very tight and defined shred tone.
I dont know what Trace did to the eq section, but all the controls
actually work and are very musical. I cant seem to make it sound bad. He truly has dialed in all the correct frequencies that are best for this amp! The preamp gain is very sensitive and versatile. If you have the preamp on 1 -2 and the master cranked,
you can achieve a very bell like bouncy crystal clean tone thats harmonicly rich and complex. I play primarily with ultra gain however and with this preamp on 8-9 I'm into Jake E Lee Bark At The Moon tones and early George Lynch sounds. Always retaining definition and just begging for harmonic stabs and squeals! From 9-10 we move ino searing, rich, super tight defined shred gain. The notes cascade and sound like a harmonic waterfall on ringing open chords and when I mute strings it completely responds to all my right hand is doing. This is the sound Ive been trying to find since I was 15 years old. I have only come close at best with all the preamp poweramp combinations and heads I have used through the last 17 years. This is it man! This is the ultra gain sound we have all heard on our favorite metal and hard rock albums that we have never really been able to dial in exactly. This is gain that an imature player will be unable to hide behind. It's not the over compressed super fuzzy, buzzy crap that everything sounds like now. It's the real thing.

I play Les Pauls with EMG 81s in the bridge and 85s in the neck position. I am a metal fusion player and have been gigging and recording regularly for almost 17 years. Zakk Wylde has really impressed me lately and renewed my love for heavy guitar. I am getting sounds like him but with just amp gain. I dont use distortion pedals. This Voodoo JCM800 is heavy guitar sounds at their best. I can even achieve an early Metallica sound like on Ride The Lightning with no pre boost or post preamp eq! It's in there. I also have pulled some nice creamy Felder/Walsh and even Skynard tones like in "On The Hunt". As I said before, I have pulled a very musical clean sound out of the little music box also.

I have complete trust in Trace and the Voodoo staff in making a rock solid workhorse. I havent owned it long, but I'm not worried
at all. If anything ever happend, they will be right there to help me.
I plan on buying one of Trace's Hex 50 heads next year.

Trace is great. We talked and e-mailed for quite awhile before I got the amp. He listened to my wish list and my description of my style and the recordings of my favorite players who use modded JCM800 Marshalls to get "that sound". It's almost hard to believe that a company could be so personal and receptive to a players requests, but Trace and the Voodoo staff have impressed me very much! I am going to show off my new ripping sound to all the musicians I work with with and play with and I will recomend Voodoo Amps to all who wish to listen to me.

I Have been playing for almost 17 years. 12 years making money
playing and recording. I have tried all the high gain preamps and
heads that come out every year and this little JCM800 1x12 combo into a 1960B Marshall cabinet truly rips them all up. Finally! I've got it!
