NOTE: The listed price paid is the purchase price of the amp NEW directly from Voodoo Amps and the cost of the Loop Mod ($99), which includes the cost of a new Mesa 'Dual Rec (about $1800), and it would've been cheaper in my case to go this route than to buy the amp and have it shipped... live and learn. I also ordered a set of replacement powertubes, Ruby 6L6's. They're not figured into the price above.
I went with a 9 in this category, because a 10 here is independant loops for each channel, assignable, and a laundry list of other things that you rarely find in an amp. That said, it has the features I NEED, and it does them quite well.
The modded Dual Rec's features, in my case, are only slightly different than most of those listed here. My loop is now series, which is perfect for me, because that's where I place my EQ and noise gate. This disables the mix and channel assign/footswitch functions on the stock amp. Everything else is as you'd expect. Mine is a three channel model purchased new in 2007. I use Gibson Custom Shop LP's loaded with '57 classics (though I'm thinking of making a switch to PRS Tremonti-model pickups). I play all things RocK.
On a side note, some reviews on HC are sketchy, seemingly too good to be true, and possibly written by someone affiliated with the company in question. I am not a Voodoo Amps employee or official endorsee (though I gladly would be, Trace, if you see this). I am only linked to Voodoo Amps as a customer, and I'm about to write a glowing review. Want proof? Read the other reviews.

Sound QUALITY, literally, period. This is where Voodoo earns their keep. The first thing you notice is what you don't notice... noise! I've caught myself a couple times having to do a double take, thinking I was still on "stand by." Roll up the volme pot on your guitar, and you'll find out very quickly that you're not! The "red" channel growls, brutal, menacing, and delishous! It'll make you think you're the big kid on the playground that nobody ***** with. As advertised, Dimebagian pinch harmonics leapt off the fretboad effortlessly. The tone is now full and musical. I didn't know when I ordered the mod whether or not I'd even be able to tell if there were, as promised, added even-order harmonics. I thought that was something a studio engineer might pick up on, but not me. I noticed. Attack was immediate and crisp. Sustain for days. This mod made my Dual Rec a trackable amp!
...and that's just the red channel.
The amber (2nd) channel could probably be summed up best as "smooth." It's the definition of liquid gain. Most people that I run across who play three channel Dual Recs automatically assume the red channel is made for lead and the amber channel for rythym. Leads sound great on the red channel, or atleast now they do, but kick up the volume on the 2nd channel and watch it soar! Impecable warmth.
The cleans from my amp are full and distinguished with plenty of useful high-end sparkle! I really don't even know how best to describe them... to hear is to know, to know is to love.
Ready for the best part? My EQ knobs work the way EQ knobs are supposed to work now! Anyone who's owned a stock Mesa Dual Rec made after the early 90's knows exactly what I'm talking about. No more adjusting my presence to get my highs to show up, no more cranking my bass and mids to eleven to find the sweetspot, and that's not all. I don't know how they did it, but I have improved headroom on my clean channel AND on the others I can dial in high-gain crunchy chaos at low volume!
The orderform (available from their website, voodooamps.com) should be a good indicator of what you'll get out of a Voodoo mod. It doesn't just have a bunch of check-boxes and a generic before and after description... it's got a place for you to write some examples of tones you like from other artists' albums. I thought it was bulls*** at first, but needless to say, I got what I wanted.

Maybe I shouldn't say this, but when you call Voodoo with a tech question, you DON'T leave your name and number so that a sales rep, not a technician, can call you back a week later like some companies I've dealt with *coughmesa*. In fact, there's a pretty d*** good chance the guy on the other end of the line will be Trace Allen Davis... THE GUY WHO DID YOUR MOD! He'll take the time to answer your questions until you've got a warm and fuzzy feeling about anything that has to do with the work they've done or could do for you and your amp.
This seems like a good place to make a point: You ask you doctor how to be healthy. You ask your accountant to do your taxes. Listen to what Trace has to say. You'll be doing yourself a favor if you do.

Mesa Dual Recs took a nosedive in sound quality somewhere around the mid 90's when they started using different components. Mine is from the new millinia, and it sounds better than any other Dual Rec you could put next to it... except maybe another one from Voodoo! If I ever wanted to sell it, like if I need the money for a life-saving operation, it'd retain it's value. Goodbye low-balls on craigslist, hello top-dollar e-bay! If it were stolen, you can bet Trace would be getting another call from me to place an order. Their amps aren't cheap, that's true. They don't sound cheap either! As a company, I've never heard a bad word against them. They do a Diezel VH4 mod... I've got one, and I'm very tempted to see what they can do with it, too. Voodoo amps will take your Mustang and give you back a Ferrari!

2006 I ordered it brand new from Voodoo and they "Voodoo Deluxe Modded" it prior to me taking delivery I features 3 independent Channels ,
I play blues/rock style and use it mainly doing Worship Music at Church.
I also purchased the "Voodoo 2X12" cabinet loaded with 2 Celestion GT75s

This is the first Amp I've owned that REALLY does it all.
I now perform mainly on a weekly Worship Team at my Church. With other amps was always fighting the Volume/Tone issue that plagues anyone that works with a large degree of dynamics while performing. We play a wide array of musically styled stuff, I am usually accountable for the edgy sound of the band (Modern Worship Music calls for this).
The Voodoo Amp/Cabinet combo, (unlike most amps) sounds surprisingly wonderful at lower levels and can even achieve a nice "Metallica Type" tone without completely drowning out the other members of the group. The Amp is VERY responsive to a player's touch and can go from a nice chimey clean tone to a extremely harmonically rich overdrive by just either lightening the touch and or adjusting the volume on the guitar itself. I personally detest stomp boxes for overdrive/distortion and pride myself for plugging in directly. I do use a Demeter Compulator for a tinge of compression and a volume/tuning pedal merely for convenience. The only overdrive stomp box I use (and on very rare occasions) is a Keeley Modded Ibanez TS-808.
As far as Guitars, I have been using a stock PRS Swamp Ash Special (Maple neck) though my Stratocasters, vintage Les Paul Specials and my Les Paul Junior are also wonderful with the Voodoo setup.

I've played for 30 years.
I own a myriad of Amplifiers, mainly Vintage 60's and 50's Tweed Fenders and a 1964 AC30 Vox. The issue with them is one of reliability and the fact that you cannot get a wide range of tonal variety without bringing an array of amplifiers to use at each venue.
The Voodoo Modded Dual Rectifier Mesa with your Voodoo 2x12 cabinet has been a real treat and a significant addition to my Gear.

Little story beind this to inspire further customers: I bought this amp from eBay from a dude in California and had it shipped directly to Trace without even thinking of checking it out first! I know how stock Dual Recs sound. I had a Road King before and sold it in a heart beat when I compared to a newly acquired VHT UL Pitbull. Well, I went for the Deluxe mod. Brand new Mercury output tranny + standard mod. Glad I went for that! I drove down to Trace from around Toronto with a buddy of mine. He modded his VHT UL Pitbull as well!
I got there and the Dual Rec was waiting for me all done up! I plugged in my PRS CU24, and HOLY SMOKES: it blew us away! Tight and punchy like I never heard before in my life. I thought my Diezel VH4 was punchy and tight, well, this is MIND BLOWING and beyond! Low end galore, definition, abosultely ZERO MUD. The tubes made a real difference: get the Rubys for this one! I had Svets and EH 12AX7 with me. Trace installed the Rubys 6L6 and 12AX7s and it was really noticeable. I'm sold on these Rubies for my amp.
The cleans are WAAAAY better than stock. TONS of punch, life, low end and chime like a Fender.
The distortion like I said, is out of this world. Modern setting will rip your head off in drop D tunings! PERIOD! THe vintage and RAW sound soo smooth. Very cool. Overall the dist channels seems to be a bit middy when used through Celestion V30s. Trace uses Celestion 75 which are do not favour the mids like the V30. I have to turn down the mids, no big deal.
I'm very hard to please when it comes to sound. I've owner quite a bit of hi-end amps. Vintage hiwatts, Fenders, Marshalls, a VHT UL Pitbull, Mesa Boogie Tremoverb, Road King, etc. Now I have a Diezel VH4 and this beast! This amp is colder sounding than the VH4 for sure. That's the way Mesa built it. You either like it or hate it! I LOVE IT! For versatility and more warmer sound the VH4 is better, but it's 3 times more expensive... For tight-in-your-face-rip-your-head-off rhythm the VOODOO AMPS modded MESA DUAL REC IS THE WAY! TRACE IS DA MAN! The mod gets a 10. The amp gets 9 cuz it can't do 100% what I need. I'm just too picky. An amp that can do what my VH4 does and what the Voodoo Dual Rec does would probably be 100% for me! I'm thinking of modding my Diezel in the near future if I'm in his area! He's gonna make it better! I'm sure he will!
I'm going to be doing some recording with my band Distant Minds, so you check this beast on www.distantminds.net soon.

Trace stands behind his products 110% and beyond! No matter what I asked him, he enlightened me with tons of info! Hats off to him! One of the coolest experiences in my life. Been playing for 13 years guitar and for anther 7 violin. For sure I'll mod up another Dual Rec at Trace if I can afford it! The amp cost me $1200 shipped to Trace and another $624.99 for the MOD + the tubes. So you're looking almost 2 grand here. Is it a kick ass amp? Yes. The mod is not cheap... but you get what you pay for that's for sure.

2000 Mesa Dual Recto (Standard Voodoo Mesa Boogie Mod)
Before you consider Sending your amp in to mod, plan on $$Buying a new set of Ruby tubes for both the power section & preamp section that voodoo recommends, otherwise you amp will sound like Garbage.
Ruby tubes are really great tubes, I wish I knew of them before.
And ofcourse your guitar & Cabinet/Speaker Quality, will robb any amp of good sound too.
Continue...
100 watts Tube Amp
3 channel I only use the RED channel 3.
After 3 years of miserable Frustration with the amp before the voodoo mod, I was about to throw this peice a hype in the dumpster-why because I could never get a consistant sound out of the rectifier. It would sound great one band practice then it would sound like crap the next practice. Then I stumbled accross VOODOO's website, I figured on last try before I burn this amp. I got it back, couldnt wait to plug it in, but it sounded worse than before.
So I called Voodoo to get some advice. I turns out that I was using some crappy tubes (GROOVE TUBES)Big mistake on my part for using these & they were brand new 6L6's. They suggested using RUBY-6L6GCMSTR (Power) and 7025SS (Preamp). Then they told me to replace my V30's with GT1275. Turn out they were right after spending an additional $550, the amp sounds WAY BETTER. $1600 for the MESA/$500 for the Voodoo Mod/$550 for Ruby Tubes & new Speakers. If I would have know I would have purchased a ENGL or Deizel amp after all the money I dumped into this peice of crap.- But whatever Live & Learn.
Note: It took me a while to notice the difference in sound, but once I cranked the output knob to about 5-6 and the Channel Volume about 2-3, I notice a major improvement in the amp. Sounds TIGHTER and more Musical. The amp is good enough for me now. Its loud. I wish its still sounded like the Voodoo sound sample, but Studios can make a Costo amp sound tight.
If you ar into Hardcore or Metal or heavy Low Tunning Rock, skip all this & look into ENGL/Soldano/Diezel. you will end up paying the same price for these high end amp anyways. If I could just back up I would have easily spent $3,500 on a better amp than delt with Mesa Rectos/Marshalls and crap.

I play a Gibson Flying V with EMG pickups in it. My band's music is a mix between Killswitch Engage, Glass Casket, Lamb of God, and Between the Buried and Me. Before I had the amp modded I was running into a common problem it seems most people are having with the newer Rectos...they sound really muddy and have no tightness in the bottom end when you are trying to play technical metal. After Voodoo Amps got their hands on it, it sounds beautiful! The distortion has so much more definition, palm muted riffs rattle everything off the walls at our rehearsal space, and my whole band is just overall happy with the new sounds. The clean channel sounds way better too, almost sparkles if you fiddle with the settings a little bit, before the mod it really had no character.

Basically, if you have a newer Dual Rectifier and think you can get a better tone out of it, take it to Voodoo Amps and let them mod it for you. It seems they can pretty much make it sound however you like, and for the price you pay it is so much worth it. Even if you don't have a Recto and have another amp you would like to sound better, go to Voodoo and see what they can do for you (awesome rhyme). I'm happy with my amp finally!

Been playing 17 years. I own a Mesa cab Gmajor fx Dunlop rack crybaby (Voodoo modded) Ground control/Gcx, Line 6 filter modulator, Voodoo cords (the best) Hughes& Kettner tubeman.
I love evrything about the amp post mod and had complaints pre mod as the brittleness and fuzzy gain issues are common complaints of the stock rectifier. The clean used to suck and the lows sounded loose before.
I have compared it to many amps like Marshall, H&K, Deizel, etc.
I love this amp. I actually think it sounds better than the above amps but maybe a couple less features.
The Voodoo witchdoctor or Vplex would be the only other amps I would ever think of buying.
Totally happy.
I am including some of my posts on Voddo amps forum to give more insight. Enjoy
I was never happy with my 2 channel dual rectifier. I tried svetlans 454 Russian 430s, El34 svetlanas, JJ teslas, Groove tubes and many different pre amp tubes as well as kt88s. After spending $500 in tubes in search of "THE TONE" I decided to check into modding my amp. Then I found out about Voodoo. I wish I would have gave them the money to begin with because now my tone is kiiiiiiiiilllllllllleeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! and I have a room full of shiny new tubes to look at. The ruby tubes Voodoo uses are great and the 12ax7 Electro Harmonix preamp tubes are the best I have tried. The mod will bring your tone to life. The clean is awesome and the dirty is filthy like a female mud wrestling match gone awry. Thats a good thing LOL. Make sure to get the global knob add on and for over the top low end get the bottom control. The standard mod is great but the more knobs the better. Who says less is more? Just kidding the global makes the biggest difference in my oppinion as it is a sweepable mid giving girth to the tone while the bottom tightens up the lows and shakes you to the bone with ooomph comparable to Harley motorcycles rumble. Save yourself the expense of experimenting with expensive alternatives and give Trace a call. You wont regret it.
I had my mesa rectifier (2 channel ) Modded recently and everyone that hears it is blown away with their ear next to my cabinet while I am on stage. I too play in a cover band and an original band and the amp is very versatile. Definately cuts thru the mix better than before and is in your face and articulate on the red and orange channels. The clean is awesome as well. You will not be dissapointed. As far as the guitar goes, I dont know if any guitar thats not made of gold can hang with a voodoo modded amp LOL. Seriously check out the clips on this site and multiply the sound quality x 2 and you have an Idea of the sound you will get with the mod. I thought it would be a good Idea to have before and after clips?????
Re: Mesa dual rectifier (2 channel)
If you are thinking about it I would say do it. My mesa sounded mediocre before the mod and amazing after. If you want the same amount of gain as you have now then get a push/pull pot installed for gain boost. The gain is better but about 20% less after the mod unless you get a gain boost installed. You wont need as much gain as before though. The amp really cuts through the mix in my band (industrial/alternative/electronica). The clean is the best and the red channel has a unique quality unlike the stock mesa and better than the stock.
I have a couple of buddies that have their amps modded by a prominent amp designer who will remain nameless. His amps sound great but I was told that this was the best rectifier they ever heard. This was reassuring to me as they are very picky about tone. While the argument remains as to whats better (Marshall/Mesa) I feel comfortable in telling anyone thinking about a Voodoo mod to go for it. The thing that impressed me most was the clean channel (orange). This was the most lifeless sounding clean I have ever heard. Now its the best. Reminds me of a Fender twin on steroids, WOW.
The Red channel is kickin too and has a much more intelligible cut to i

I lked the recto before I sent it to voodoo amps, but I felt it could be better. I was right Trace & co made my amp sound 10 times better, the mod gave it more more punch, tightened the amp up. The clean channel has a warm yet still bright sound. both distortion channels sound amazing, everything from great blues tones to brutal metal tones can be found in the amp. The distortion is more open puchy, and clear (letting you here every note instead of a mushy sound) even when the gain is all the way up. The amp is less forgiving, good playing sounds better but if you play sloppy that will also show through more

The Features of this head are extremely usable for tons of different tones, although the EQ is extremely tempermental for use in a working situation. I found that my tone was very inconsistent until this mod.
I never used the FX loop, but heard it wasn't the greatest. Tons of Power. Sounds great at 100 watts and 50 watts. This comes in handy if you're in a bind and need a tube. Just take out the set of power tubes that are giving you a problem along with one Rectifier tube and it's at 50 watts and still sounds awesome.

This mod made the Dual Rectifier sound amazing. If you're into the heavy tones without the chainsaw bottom end, this mod is for you. I have gotten so many compliments on my tone since the modification. I am using a Les Paul with a 510 in the bridge and a duncan 59' in the bridge.
The Clean tone is more Fenderish and has more headroom.
'TIP: Set the FX loop send along with the Gain and Master Volume knob on the clean channel first. Then set your other channels accordingly. You'll have an easier time getting the gain channels to match in level this way, while still keeping a good clean tone.'
I was an unhappy Dual Rectifier buyer until this mod.

Before the mod:
Horrible dependability. I went through tubes like crazy and almost resorted to getting a variac to control the voltage the amp received because the sound was never the same.
After the mod:
Amazing! I can finally go 6-8 months (gigging 4-5 nights a week) and never have a problem until the power tubes need replacing (which is expected after using the amp so much).
I've been carrying a backup in my truck and have had to lend it to my other guitar player (twice), while I have never needed it.
The consistency has become extremely dependable and I often don't even have to touch my amp from one gig to another because of this.

2000 Mesa/Boogie Dual Rectifier triple channel solo head. I had Voodoo Amps mod this amp around April 2002 when I visited Trace so I could nitpick which tones I exactly wanted. To tell you the truth, if you are considering the same, make sure that you know exactly what you want; the man can really hook you up with so many good sounds, and I found myself struggling with some of the options. In the end, though, I got a wonderful sounding head. While no additional features were added to the stock amp, the features it did have actually behaved more intuitively. The EQ responded much better, and a wider array of good tones could be had.

My main guitars are an Ibanez USA Custom and a cheap Ibanez G10 7-string (modded with Air Norton and Tone Zone pickups, as well as a coil-split). I am in a funk/punk/ska band, as well as a rock cover band, and both require a fair amount of sonic variety. I also play some jazz gigs, and the Dual Rec, while fairly versatile stock, could not achieve every tone which I was aiming for.
With the mods, there are so many options available. While not known as being a great mid-gain amp, I could crank the master on the first channel's pushed voicing and get a cool blues-y type vibe that, with a little boost, made for some nice sustained lead sounds. When taken down, the clean is just wonderful for doing funk/reggae licks and takes pedals rather nicely.
What really took my breath away, though, was when I tried Channel 2 and Channel 3 on modern modes and played some jazz progressions. Wow, I never though you could play intricate chords with alot of gain, but this was a revelation to the contrary! Even more dissonant chords and harmonics sounded way cooler than on pretty much anything other than acoustic (which admittedly has a different vibe). Also, regular power and barre chords sounded much fuller and more articulate.
To be fair, a bit of gain was taken out of these channels, but what was left was much more useable gain that just felt more musical and forced me to play cleaner (as my mistakes were much more noticeable). Palm mutes were much more effective and tight, and harmonics just sustained so much more.
Leads were just beautiful and easy to tweak to get that liquid sustain, and rolling back the master/gain on the amp allowed me to get some really cool clean tones that were perhaps a little darker than channel 1, which left me with so many great clean tones to choose from. The true character of the guitar came through, which really makes me want to get a Les Paul toute suite!

So far, so good. Trace even showed me some flaws in the amp that went past Mesa/Boogie quality control, which he fixed at no additional charge. While the fixes may not ahve been noticeable to me, it means alot that Trace would ensure that you are getting the real deal and the best amp for your money.

Trace himself is very easy to get hold of, especially for someone who everyone wants to contact. I really cannot say enough about his professionalism and commitment to making sure I was happy. Even if I didn't end up getting my amp modded, he provided me with alot of information that has helped me out through the years.

Yes, yes, I know that this is another glowing review, but what can I say? This had cured my GAS for about a year now and inspires me to play and create cool sounds. The fact that the sounds are customized for my particular tastes would dictate that I'd have no-one to blame but myself if I wasn't happy.
Trace really knows what he is doing and has opened up the true potential of the amp. I wanted to not write this review right after I got it, since I know that the tendency would be to rave about my new toy, but this is no gimmick. I really have not been as psyched to play in all my 13 years of playing as I am now, and a large part of that is due right to the amazing sound I get from this amp.
If this was stolen or lost, I would probably look at Trace's other offerings, as well as maybe an Ubershall or Knucklehead 2. It is a great time to explore amps!

I have an early Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier 2 Channel 100 watt head. I thought the amp was a little too undefined and the bass wasn't tight at all for the kind of music I'm into mainly metal and hardcore. I brought it to Voodoo Labs in Ithaca and Trace and Anthony fixed everything and then some.

I use an Ibanez RG570 with a Tone Zone in the bridge. I was into my amp before but I knew there was more I could get out of it and after trying many different preamp and power tubes I decided to go to Voodoo. When they were done it was like night and day my dual rect could level a building now and there is a ton more definition. The palm mutes are huge!

Hey if my amp were stolen I'd know where to find it.... mesa would probably have it and be trying feverishly to figure out the weaponry that voodoo amps installed in my Dual Rectifier. After they finished and I heard it... it's like that tone you hear in your head that you can't get out of your amp, well they can make it happen it's the best money I ever spent on tone! Just email them what you wish your amp could sound like, they'll convince you trust me...
