I had my 5150 by Trace and VooDoo amps about a month ago. Damn, why did'nt I do this YEARS ago!! This amp just became EVIL. I love it. Way "tighter" tone then before, with huge amounts of chunk. Sounds awesome live, and I can't wait to record with it. Thanks Trace, and everyone at VooDoo Amps.

This is just a follow-up on this head....When I got it back from Trace, I wasn't sure if I liked it? I recorded some tunes, and it sounded Okay? I was using my rack gear with it, which included:
ART 31 band EQ
BBE Maximizer
TC Electronic G-Major
Hush Unit
Today, I was kinda gettin fed up with the recording sound, and recently been thinking about getting a Engl Powerball. So I totally unplugged all the rack gear and just fired up the head by itself....The result! FUCKING METAL! Holy shit was it rockin! I won't sell it now....the balls it has, wow....all taken away by the effects sends....fuck my rack gear...I am just goin with the head now, except for the g-major which I will flip on for solos or clean.

I got my 5150 modded by Trace & Company a few months ago....I play mostly metal in the style of Evergrey, Lacuna coil, Dimmu Borgir, Iced Earth. The mod made the head less noise, and just cleans it up a lot! The distortion isn't quite as heavy as without the mod....because about 20% of the gain structure is taken away. I really don't notice too much gain difference between 8 & 10? Before the mod, I only set the gain at 6.5, otherwise it sounded kinda like a fuzz stomp box. Now I set it at 7. It isn't brutal anymore, but more punch and added tightness! Clean as fuck too. You can hear every note, and that is what I wanted....I have been playing for about 16 years, and one day I was rocking with this drummer and he was like....."I can't tell what you are playing!" I thought...shit I am playing it clean...? That is what happens with the 5150 when it is cranked....the gain hides the playing a bit....the mod took care of that....Hey all yea guitarists that need more practice....the mod might make you mad cause you could hear your faults? Just a heads up. The best part of the mod(in my opinion) is the clean channel....holy shit what a difference! Like night and day how awesome it sounds now! I am very glad of that! Trace put in new Ruby tubes, and they sound great. also a variac switch so set at A it is a bit more tight sounding, and set at B it is a bit more loose and low end....Nice addition.

you get good gain at low volumes, but turning it up only improves the sound! I am pretty happy with it....a little spendy, but most I got the head new for $585, so I had some money to spend. If lost, stolen or smashed, I might opt for an Engl SE, or Engl Ritchie Blackmore. But I really am pretty happy now....If you guys are into Dimebag's sound, look elswhere.
