This is a 2003 Peavey XXX head with the Deluxe Mod done by Voodoo Amps
It can run either 6L6 or EL34/KT77 tubes, has an adjustable bias and runs 4 pre amp tubes. I'm currently running JJ 6l6 GC tubes
3 channels (Clean, Crunch, and Ultra)
The only features I wish it had was reverb, other than that it's rock solid.
I use this amp at practices and at live shows, it has plenty of volume and you can get that warm "cranked" tube sound easily by running the master volume wide open and adjusting the channel volumes to your liking.

This is mainly a metal/hard rock amp. The distortion channels are amazing, after the mods they are a lot punchier and have a crystal like quality to them. If you want lower gain type rock sounds this really isn't the amp for you, it is designed to scream and will sustain like no other. The Crunch channel reminds me of channel 2 on a Diezel Einstein. The Ultra channel is a little smoother for leads, and it is use able now. The compression is reduced somewhat so it definitely sounds more alive
The noise is GONE because of the work done by voodoo. You can run this amp loud with the master open and not even need a noise gate! It's that quiet.
This amp has a fantastic clean channel now that it has been modded. Sounds beautiful on it's own, and will certainly take pedals easily. It will NOT break up though, it is a very bell like sound, it does sound warm now that Trace modded it, there is a liveliness there that just doesn't exist in a stock XXX.

The first thing I did when I got this amp back was open it up... Unless you know what you were looking for you couldn't tell it was modified. Very Clean work.
With that said, it is still a tube amp and you just never know when you could loose a tube.

I spoke with Trace at Voodoo, he is a very nice guy who is more than happy to help with any issue, and responds to you immediately in a very personalized manner. A pleasure to deal with. The turnaround time was 2 days. That's it.

I've been playing for 7 years, I've owned the original XXX as well so I can certainly say that this is much improved. If it were stolen or lost I'd probably pickup another one, or a Diezel.
I love the Crunch channel, if you have ever heard Metallica's self titled album it nails that tone easily without much tweaking. You could run the EQ controls at 12 o clock and plug in - it would still sound good.

It should be noted that I also have a deluxe modded 3 channel duel rectifier as well. I bought this particular XXX off of ebay for $750 already modded(deluxe mod). I got a sweat deal. Considering what I paid for this amp it is amazing. I particularly like the dampening switch on the back. I keep it set on the "tight" mode. It should also be noted that I sent the amp back to trace to have a custom gain reduction mod and retube with 6L6 GCMSTR's. The only thing I wish this amp had was a solo boost like the mesa 3 channels. It nails the high gain hard rock/metal tones. I can get sounds almost identical to the tones on the BLack Stone Cherry record.

I use gibson LP's(seymour duncan pickups), Yamaha AES(seymour duncan pickups) and Gibson SG's with EMG pickups. All of these guitars sound very good through the XXX. I have a few strats, but I think they sound too thin through this particular amp. The amp is dead quiet even at high volumes/gain settings. The modded rectifier that I also own is very noisy and has feedback that is out of control. The clean channel on the XXX is the best I have ever heard. I call it the fuel/carl bell/mark tremonti clean....it is that good. The orange channel is an amazing, very sold rhythm channel. Red channel has massive low end with a little more fuzz. The best tube amp I have ever played through.

I have never had any problems with the amp. It should be noted that I do get a popping sound when changing from the red channel to the orange channel. Trace said that it could not be fixed. It is the amps only downfall and is kind of bs when considering everything else

I have been playing guitar for 12 years. I have taught guitar for about four years and consider myself a gear whore and very knowledgeable in the guitar equipment arena. This is an amp that is worth modding. I have onwed many other amps and this is overall the best. Its 90% close to the perfect tone. As I mentioned, I also have a mesa deluxe modded three channel rectifier. The rectifier is noisy, the low end is not as tight as it should be and is still fuzzy buzzy compared to the modded XXX.

I purchased the deluxe mod, new tubes and Mercury OP transformer. $930.00 Total. I purchased the amp used for $750.00, total investment is $1680.00. The tone is very musical and sharp, has great feel and propulsion. It is rich with harmonics. Trace nailed it! The tone is very broad and it can be played with no effects, single note lines are outstanding while chords sound thru all the notes. Performs great at low volumes, but when load it sounds better. The EQ is now usable and the distortion is never buzzy or flubby. There is more than enough gain and all the controls make a difference thru there entire range of adjustment. This is a completely different amp the original XXX sounds, improved 20 fold.

This was a Voodoo modded XXX done by Trace Allen in Ithaca, NY. He basically did a tone mod that was supposedly similar to his Witch Doctor mod.

At the time I was playing this amp I was using Duncan loaded Baritones and 7 string guitars. I have since sold this amp post-modded and felt it was time to share my experience with other consumers who are doing research. Post-modded this amp sounded just horrible. Peavey's gain was now a buzzy Big Muff type of vibe. I wanted the amp less compressed but this amp now was so non-compressed that you couldn't pull a harmonic overtone out of this amp unless you pushed a pedal through it. Even then it was quite difficult to pull it off. If you send this amp to Voodoo make sure you are ready for a complete change in tone. I wish I could say that it was for the better for me. I took this amp to various music stores and most people agreed that this amp didn't sound too hot. I submitted the 3 songs/bands that I was looking for tone wise. Hasten to say the amp sounded like none of them.

The amp came back broken........yes broken. Trace claimed the footswitching problem was unrelated to his mod.....but in fact my local tech said otherwise. He showed me where he hot-wired of the pin which was part of the amp toggle switch. I can't remember the exact details as I'm not a tech but he called Trace's work " A 3 year old hack job." My tech did manage to fix the amp but had to order a part from Peavey because of what happened. I sold the amp after it was repaired.

Well there's more to this story. Not all of it is Trace's fault but some of it is. First off the amp was damaged in shipment to Voodoo by UPS even though it was double boxed by Mailboxes Inc. It took 3 months for Mailboxes to reimburse me for the damage incurred by UPS. The second part which really perturbed me, is that the amp sat an additional 4 months until they did the mod, repair and shipment back to me. OK I can see it taking a while but c'mon 7 months?!! Trace did try and right the situation by giving me free tubes and paying half the shipping so I give him credit on that end. Trace is very responsible for answering emails and is very friendly on the phone. However the bottom line is I pretty much got the shaft in alot of ways. A crappy sounding amp, looong wait, and not properly repaired.

Been playing 24 years. I currently own a Randall RM 100, a Powerball, and a Laney GH50L. The Voodoo modded XXX ranks among the worst I've owned. Bottom line is this: If the amp had sounded good and was in decent repair I could have over-looked the other circumstances/mishaps that had occurred.....but it sounded like ass unfortunately. Of course one time of torture is enough for me. Never again. The reason I submitted this review was to let people know that Voodoo is not a perfect shop. I see all these 10's and high reviews and ask myself: "Then why did I get screwed?" I would advise anyone to learn from my mistake and if you insist on a Voodoo mod please take it directly to his shop and have him do it in person.

This amp head has 3 channels, Ultra, Crunch and Clean. The clean has high mid and low controls along with volume. Ultra and crunch (both distortion channels) have hair (high) body (mid) Bottom(low) Volume and Gain controls. There is a Master volume control, which controls,of course, the total volume the amp head puts out. It is a tube amp with 120 watts of power. There is an effects loop that is switchable via the foot switch (the 3 channels are also switchable through it)< the effects loops send and return levels can also be controled. the amp has also controls in the back that allows one to control how much wattage it puts out, selectable switch, called a dampning switch for what kind of cab you are using along with it (4x12'', 2x12'', ect). All of these are very useful and I have been found adjusting all of them from time to time.

i use this amp wiht my schecter 006, with 1 humbucking pickup and 1 single coil. It suits my style of music (favorite band is Metallica) really well, with the VERY wide tonality ranged wiht all 3 channels. The effects loop makes it easy to switch off my wah pedal wihtout having to stop on it really hard, and i can always leave it on and mute it with the loop button off. If the effect loop is not set right the clean channel can sound very crackley though, but with some adjustment it can sound like a dream. the mesa engenerring tubes mine came equiped with give it the mesa sound i adore so much, but with also a more bell like tone that i cant seem get with a mesa. The only problem i have is the ultra and crunch channels sound too alike, i would have liked more range with those 2 channels. The ultra has alot of oomph, but you could really get them to sound identicle if you wanted to.

I have no problem depending on this amp, the tubes havnt given up (though my wallet is afraid of replacing them any time soon) im sure if i could afford a backup amp it would be another one of these to gig with. or maybe a mesa-boogie for a marshall just for some variety.

This amp was purchased in October of 2001. It is a three channel amp (clean, crunch and ultra channels). It includes a footswitch for selecting channels. I bought the amp because I got a good price for it, but was a little frustrated with it because it sounded a little bit too compressed and harsh for my taste. For those reasons I decided to have the amp modded by Trace Allen from Voodoo Amps. I needed the amp to sound less harsh and compressed. The amp has an effects loop where I have a TC Electronics G-Major. I use this amp to ocassionally play small venue gigs, jam with friends and practice at home. I think the amp is extremely versatile and with the mods done by Trace from Voodoo Amps I can get a lot of sounds from it.

I'm using this guitar with an Ibanez RG 550 Jap Re-issue in Desert Yellow and a PRS Custom 24. I'm using dimarzio pickups (Tone Zone, Fast Track 1 and Evolution) in the RG and Seymour Duncan pickups (59 and Custom 5) in the PRS. The amp is not noisy at all.You can get a wide array of sounds with the modifications done by Trace Allen. I was basically looking for a Hot Rodded Marshall sound (Zakk Wylde, Vivian Campbell, George Lynch, Warren De Martini). This amp is an entirely different amp from the one I originally bought. You can get that great Marshall hot rodded sound with ease. The amp also gives you a better clean channel. Before I got it modded, I couldn't roll back the volume knob without still getting some distortion. Now I can roll that volume knob back and get a great clean sound, with lots more headroom than before. The distortion is still brutal on this amp, but it is more refined. There is more articulation and definition of notes when soloing with the mods done by Trace. The lower notes still sound chunky, but more tightness. Trace took the excess of compression and harshness from the amp. Know I can play the type of music I like (80's metal, hard rock and "shred" music without a problem.

I think that this amp is built like a tank, so I would definitely gig without a backup. I also have a 5150 combo and have never had any problems with it (own it for three years). I don't forsee having problems with this amp.

Since now I considered this amp more of of Voodoo Amp rather than a Peavey amp, I'll refer my comments to my experience with Trace Allen. I have to let you know that my experience with Trace was fantastic. This guy treated me like I was a professional musician, when the reality is that I'm just an average amateur guitar player. Trace always took the time to explain things for me and also replied to my lomg and bugging emails very promptly. He even gave me a discount on the mods done to the amp because I had to incur in a high shipping charges since I'm from the Caribbean. I think more stores should look and emulate the way Trace deals with its customers.

I've been playing for 20 years and the sounds I can get from this amp are the best hot rodded sounds I've heard in my life. I also own a 5150 and tbik it will go to my closet for some time off. If this amp were stolen I would just buy one of Trace's new hex amps. I was very hesitant to have the amp modded at first, but know that I got it back from Trace's shop I can tell you that it was the best decision I made when decided to have it modded. If you have a Triple X and want to make it a better amp, I strongly recommend you to send it to Trace. You will not regret it!
