Voodoo Amps Randall MTS "Dual Rec" Mod (Recto/Treadplate Module)

After unsuccessful outings with a Grail (too tight, not enough low-end thickness) and an early Recto (loose and buzzy, with barely usable gain), I decided to send my Recto to Voodoo for the "Dual Rec" modification. The job involved replacing various capacitors and other bits within the module itself, but the basic architecture (control knobs and switches, faceplate, etc.) remained stock.

As for the amp itself, I'm using an RM50 combo equipped with JJ KT-88 power tubes.

I was hoping to approximate the sound of a real, Voodoo-modded Mesa Dual Rectifier, and in that the regard, this module delivers. The low end is thick, aggressive, and plenty tight; the highs are pronounced but not piercing; and there's enough gain on tap for even the heaviest of playing styles. But despite its hard-rock orientation, the module is remarkably quiet at volume and even cleans up well if need be. Individual note clarity is also significantly better than stock.

I've only had the module for a couple of weeks, so I can't provide any feedback on reliability. MTS modules tend to be pretty solid, however, provided you take reasonably good care of them.

Voodoo's customer service is legendary, and for good reason. The owner, Trace, responded quickly to all of my e-mails, and I even received a call from another of Voodoo's employees letting me know when the module was being shipped out.

For the relatively modest sum involved (I did receive $50 off as part of an seasonal sale), the transformation over stock was frankly extraordinary. Perhaps the best indicator of my satisfaction is this: I've already sent my SL+ module to Voodoo for the "UG-Jose" mod. It won't be the last.
