Normal strat features, well known already. The neck is not slim and not fat, inbetween. Good fretwork on most of the Alba guitars (Quality Control is not at high standard). The second toneknob works only on the middle pickup. Just resolder the good point on the switch and it works properly on the bridge pickup. But for the price I paid I give it a 9!
Neck is a good piece of Maple, fretboard is a good peace of rosewood, better than my Fenderstrat!!!! The body is real Alder an not, I say not pressed paper. (I read that on a German side!)The body is 1 mm thinner than the original, don't care.
The guitar give a very good first impression.
Sound
:8
The sound is very stratty! Although the pickups have ceramic magnets they give a very good strat sound, even distorted. No shrill or harsh sounds! Very suprised by the high power of these pickup's.
Good for Rock and Blues. I use it on a Pod2.3 into a PA amp. Its a bit noisy on highgain settings, but hey these are singlecoils.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:8
Action was to high. Intonation was quite well. Strings must be replaced, these are not so good. Tuners need to be replaced too. For beginners they are ok, but when you want to gig with it you must replace them. Topnut is a soft kind of plastic, replace! But you must realize this is a very cheap guitar!
What have I done with two of these guitars: I replaced the neck for high quality necks, the tuners for locking ones, the topnut for graphite, the pickup's for lace golds and the bridgesaddles for graphtech saddles. What did I keep: THE BODY!!!!!
A few years ago I bought at Ebay a strat body with the weight of 1 kilo! This body was very very resonant. Even unplugged you could hear the clearety of the sound. Plugged with Lace pu's I found MY SOUND. The only thing that was wrong was the neckpocket. It was to big for a normal stratlike neck. So I filled it up with pieces of wood. The sound was super but I didn't like the body/neck connection.
So my search began for the lightwight Strat body, till I read the reviews here of the Alba strat. I found them in a German ebay shop and I ordered one. When I got the guitar I stripped it and build my beloved neck and the other hardware on it and WHAM! I have my NO1 Strat. Perfect neck/body fitting. Very good deep strat tone. I was so happy I orderd 4 more. Build my second strat and keep 3 of them as spare! The Alba strat is now out of order on Ebay so I have 3 body's for the rest of my life. On a american ebay I saw a '72 Alder stratbody with the same wight and it costs 1000USD!!!! So I might say I'm very happy with these

You can't smash the guitar on the stage because it will break. When you play in a normal way and treat the guitar in a normal way it wil withstand live playing with just a few replacements of the hardware.

I play for many years, I'm 56 years old. I had many guitars but this ownmade with the Alba body beats them all. I don't play my Fender anymore, too heavy and less tone as my new lightwights.
When you want to buy this guitar and do the minimum to get a good strat you have to replace the topnut and maybe the tuners and there you go.
Considering the price it can not be beaten!

okay a stratocaster copy...that's new.my friend brought me mine from germany(e-bay quality) a few months ago.i think it's from japan, but not sure.it's a solid guitar for beginers(like me :D)and it's worthy the price.the guitar is pretty light which leads me to the conclusion it's not a solid body guitar.the neck is smooth and very nicely done.21 frets, pickups SSS,5-way selector,1 volume and 2 tone nobs, maple neck and body, finish is red,and a chromed tremolo bridge and guitar cable input.the accesories are like squier's ''Stop dreaming, start playing!'' set.a 15watt amp,2 set of strings(which are by the way crappy, replace them emidiately!),picks(good ones),cable(not a very good one),strap, gig bag and a tune whistle(i think...i'm from croatia so don't mind the grammar mistakes)all in all a solid guitar to begin with
Sound
:8
just like on a real strat you can play pretty much anything.it suit's almost every music style.still there are some bad points:when you put it on overdrive it get's noisy on every setting(it's the guitar original amp)(the noise varies with the amount of gain)...but on normal sound you can get really nice tones.you can get a really nice acoustic sound (setting:5 way-selector position 5,tone1 10,tone 2 5,on amp tone about 9-10)i use the original amp that i got with the guitar and no pedals or effects(but i'm going to buy the BOSS DS2 Turbo Distorsion :D)the amp has it's own overdrive which is pretty good, but still it's not good enough.because of the lot of noise it's a smaller grade but ok for a low class equipment :)
Action, Fit, & Finish
:6
i don't know much about guitar set-up's so i won't comment on that one,but from the setting that i have been playing on i think it's pretty good. and now my biggest minus point:the tuners...only the tune nobs, and the part where the strings are attached to,are felling like they are from some kind of metal, and i think that the rest is plastic.the loosen up after a couple of hours and are loosely fitten itself.
Reliability/Durability
:7
i don't think the guitar will survive live playing or at least for a long time.my friend has also an alba guitar but it's a bass(Fender P-bass copy to be precise)and the hardware s busted...when you plug it in it makes a lot of noise and you cannot play it,the tone nobs are broken too.i think the finish is good, but personally i like that damaged, scratched look(kinda like frusciante's stratocaster here's a link to it http://www.jftab.com/img/gear/guitar/frusciante-stratocaster-1962.jpg )

i never called customer support so i don't have any thing to say, except a 2year warranty so...two thumbs up!

(#1 Squier :) )final grade 7 and i think it's a good grade

This is a follow-up to the very first review on Alba strats from June 14th 2007. I had the luck to grab one with the original strat shape including 70's big headstock. The woodwork is very nice, neck fits perfect in the pocket unlike many 70's strats. Body is real one piece wood very light weight. Neck has a 70's profile, inbetween slim and beefy. The rosewood fretboard is better quality than some in the 200,- price range.
Sound
:10
The lightweight body resonates very well and I was crazy enough to upgrade the cheapest strat on ebay with '54 Fender CS pu's, CTS pots and Orange Drop condenser. Whoaaah, this now is strat as strat can be, beats every unmodified American standard soundwise, even if you play up the 12th fret, which separates good from bad guitars.
Action, Fit, & Finish

As mentioned before out of the box it needs some adjustment and polishing work, clean the neck pocket and so on. In this case it's not a beginners guitar, for the newbies a guitar which works good out of the box would be a much better deal.

I own this guitar now for more than one year. Neck is still straight, no need to change the tuners, everything seems to be sturdy after one year of regular playing. Whole electrics had been changed, no rating for these parts.

Playing for 35+ years, owned a lot of vintage stuff. Used to play dozens of 60's and 70's US strats in the past, when they were cheap. Also the US original, especially in the 70's, differs a lot in quality. I had some great and some real poor American vintage strats. The difference on Albas is, if you get a poor one just take the parts and buy another one. My modified Alba now is a real keeper and I play it a lot, even use it partly on recordings. You might think the reason I play the Alba a lot is the lack of other guitars. Well, here is my actual line up of electrics: '68 Fender US Strat, '66 Fender US Telecaster, '67 Gretsch Double Annie, '78 Greco EG-800 3PU Les Paul, '73 Ibanez SG with Bigsby, '83 Hamer Phantom A5, '84 Kramer The Pacer, early 80's CG Winner 335, Fenix by Young Chang Strat first series with original 60's headstock, 2003 Gretsch Les Paul Junior (completely underrated great little guitar for Americana, you can grab it for peanuts), 2007 Alba Telecaster. Some more lapsteels, dobros, banjos, basses and 6 & 12 string acoustics. My main workhorse amp for more than 20 years is a Music Man RD-112 One Hundred EV, which will be with me 'til the end. In this line up the modified Alba holds its place, nothing more to say.

Basic Fender Strat shape in startling turquoise, made in China. Described as 'massive maple' but the body is extremely light (total instrument weight = 5lb 8oz) so not sure what we are dealing with here - but it is not plywood anyway! Standard pickup system for a strat, with 5-way selector.
Rosewood fingerboard (unlike the experience of others here, I think on mine this is for real rather than a stained wood) with no maker's decal, and decent tuners which look fine, but need a bit of tightening up. The neck (quite narrow and small diameter curve) is quite light also, so the guitar is not top-heavy.
Trem block shows an economy of metal - it is nothing like as substantial a hunk of steel as you would expect in a Fender or many other makes - but this does not seem to be a big problem for the sound. I guess I could swap it out anyway.
A short cable was included, plus hex keys for truss rod and for saddles.
I have not played this much yet, but I think I can make a fair assessment...
Sound
:7
Unlike the Alba Telecasters I recently had and reviewed, the pickups are quite punchy. The tone controls on this one have little effect (will check these out and perhaps replace the pots) but in other respects, the sound is pretty impressive really through my Roland Bolt amp (which I think is a good discriminator among guitars!). There is little noise from them. The guitar has a decent sound and sustain when not plugged in, which is usually a good sign.
Pickups have been earthed via the trem system, and I might try putting some proper shielding in there instead.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:6
The frets have been very roughly dressed - will have to go over these again - but the neck does sound okay and accurate. The trem cavity shows a hasty bit of routing, and reveals the thick layers of paint - but again, it all works fine. Externally, the turquoise finish is excellent; very smooth and consistent.
The neck did not appear to have been finished at all - like freshly sanded wood - but have oiled it and it seems good.
Reliability/Durability
:8
The finish is very good - I already managed to knock the instrument over and it doesn't show a scratch - and I think it is robust. A bit concerned to read reviews here of the Tele and the Strat, saying that the neck is a bit weak and susceptible to bending under the influence of heavy strings, but we'll see how this one goes.

When I think of the hopeless dross you had to pay real money for back in the 1980s (at least in the UK), then kit of this quality is all the more impressive - but given the price, I fear that the poor people in the factories are being paid in monkey-nuts or something.
These guitars are coming into Europe thick and fast at the moment via Ebay - I don't know whether the US is getting the benefit yet.
As per all the reviews here, and my own of recent Telecaster purchases, these instruments are being built to a pattern at a number of different factories, and I think that you can't expect consistency - if I bought another of these right now, against the same description, I might get something even better, or substantially worse - might have a bigger or smaller headstock, poor pickups, a heavier body, a glossy finish on the neck (as opposed to no finish at all) and different hardware.
But my guess would be that it would still be worth the very small price that we in Europe are paying at the moment.

This is more a general comment on stuff coming from germany
marketed as 'alba'
( I left a comment about my first alba tele recently )
These guitars are generaly good copies of fender models.
( + les pauls + original )
They are very inexpensive and generaly good copies.
But I have bought a few more just out of interest.
At this price you can mess around and not worry if
you screw the things up.
It is obvious to me that the company in germany
are sourcing guitars from various chinese
companies.
The build differs, the shape differs and the sound
differs.
In my tele comment, I said the pickups were not
as stated by previous writers. Well they wouldn't
be because it is clear to me that an 'alba' is
a copy from a factory in china (anywhere in china).
Now that doesn't make them bad, but they are
unpredictable. All are worth the money but
the build / electrics varies hugely. They
vary from sounding like a real fender to
being like something I'd buy in the 70's
(for a tenner)
Oddly , from what I see, the better the build,
the worse the pickups.
I'm not knocking these, but an 'alba' could be
OK for the money to being a complete steel.

I cant say,
They tend to be quite light apart from the
gibson copies and the originals.
They seem well put together from a woodwork
point of view.
The purist would whinge at this, I bought a strat
in 1978 that had a neck at a 10 degree angle
from it's body. We may love Fender stuff,
but the QA has never been great.

It is a China made pink strat bodied solidbody guitar. The pickup- and control configuration is what you expect on such a guitar. Prefectly copied. Pickups not staggered like on the original. Body wood is alder, according to the seller. But I believe it is not, because of the light weight of 2,65 kg only. The neck is maple with a rosewood fretboard. Again - it is supposed to be something stained, because my finger tips got black when I played the first couple of times. The nech shape is well rounded and fat, what I prefer, unlike the original. The chrome plated hardware is quite O.K., the tuners are not that precise but work good enough. Very surprising are the pots! They run smooth, much better than those of all my other guitars (up to 2200 Euros)! The function is perfect as well! A simple cable and a hex wrench for the truss rod was included.
Sound
:10
I play all styles, from rock over blues to jazz. Since 40 years now. The Alba Strat fits to all of them, like the original does. Though the sound is slightly different. Due to the lightweight body, the sound is generally more smooth and mellow, not as aggressive as a Fender. I compared with a new American Standard last weekend. The pickups are unexpectedly powerfull and the string loudness is very even, without these ugly staggered pole pieces! Great! You can even use the bridge pickup alone. It sounds not too harsh, due to the body wood. The switch positions 2 and 4 sound really stratish. The tone controls do exactly what they should. Again - perfect. All in all - great sound quality and range, good overall feel! And all this compared to the original!!! If you look on the price, it is unbelievable!
Action, Fit, & Finish
:5
Here is the weak point on my Alba. The action was too high, not only at the bridge (which is adjustable) but on the nut as well, which needed filing down the slots! Fortunately, I own special guitar tools, because I am a hobby guitar repair man. Also poor - the fret job. Even on a pretty high action, the strings buzzed on many spots. So I dressed the frets completely (leveling, re-crowning, polishing). Now the guitar has a proper action and does not buzz any more. If somebody does not have my tools and experience, he would have to live with compromizes or has to pay for the set up. The paint finish of the body is close to flawless, the same with the neck.
Reliability/Durability

It is robust like the original. No doubt it will survive even heavy treatment on stage.

I have been playing since 1968. I own around 10 guitars recently, jazz guitars, semi acoustics and solid bodies. My main guitars are a Hofner New President, a Hofner Verythin Vintage, a Ibanez SZ 320 Gold Top, an Aria 5102 semi from 1971 and an Ibanez ATK 300 bass guitar. There are a few more, partly vintage guitars from the sixties. My amp is a Roland Cube 30 and for the bass a Trace Elliot Boxer 65. At the moment, I play the Alba Strat very often, because she offers sounds the others have not available. The sound and feel is great now. But in general, I prefer semi acoustics. If it were stolen I would order a new one immediately (which I did last week, by the way). The pink one I will donate to my daughter, the new one in Vintage White I'll prepare for myself. Hopefully the setup is better than on the first one! Whatsoever - the price-value ratio is unbelievably good! I consider to buy the tele- and LP type as well.

Following up from my original review of 8 Jan 2008, I am beginning to notice the neck tilting slightly.
It is not a truss rod issue, since I checked the curve of the fret board, which has not changed and is OK.
However, by applying very light pressure on the neck, it tilts back against the body and I observe the action lowering noticeably.
The only thing that has changed is that I have replaced the strings from 9s to 10s. This didn't cause an immediate change, but the onset of the tilt has been a gradual process over the past few weeks.
The action has gradually become higher and I am beginning to notice that the instrument is much less playable than before.
I am hoping that it will settle and I can re-adjust the saddles. This will reduce but not eliminate the effects as there is only a limited adjustment margin. However, if the situation continues the saddles will not cope and the guitar will become a write-off.
The other option is to change back to 9s and/or consider drop tuning it.
My real Fender also got 9s replaced with 10s and apart from a truss rod adjustment seems fine.
In hindsight I've had a fun project messing about with a cheap guitar, learning how to set it up etc.
It is also taken to class and used for practice, so it has served some purpose, so will only be a partial flop if it goes south.
I wont be bothering with the guarantee though because that would be too much hassle.

I cannot see how they can import from China and sell so cheaply and make a profit. The shipping from Germany to UK at only ??16 is very reasonable too.

sounds like a strat has to sound. nice twang and not too bright. I'd say it's very vintage. some like it, some don't-i do. the pickups are a bit noisy, but i really have to say that my american strat isn't much less noisy. i mainly play clean and crunch. stuff like rory gallagher, hendrix, vaughan sounds nice, you get the strat-sound you need.

This is a Stratocaster copy (650mm scale) comprisiong:
Alder body, 22 frets, maple neck and a tremolo (3 spring, adjustable by removing back plate as per Strat design).
Also has a 5 way switch, 1 volume and 2 tone controls, 3 single coil pickups (adjustable).
It was made in China and came via a German supplier through Ebay.
It comes supplied with a gigbag, a long jack lead, a strap, a truss rod Allen key, saddle adjustment Allen key and factory fitted strings (9s I think).
The strap comes off the strap button fairly easily.
Sound
:6
Before fixing and adjusting the setup and fixing problems it had very poor intonation at the nut end and lots of fret buzz and twanging of the bass strings.
When fixed, set-up properly and re-strung with Fender Original Bullets (10s) it's much, much, much better. I still prefer my genuine Fender but this budget axe now has very good sustain and tone.
The pickups are fairly noisy and I am having to use the full noise reduction of my Korg AX5G effects box/pedal to avoid this issue.
Not bad for the price.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:3
Out of the box, the strings were poor and the setup almost unplayable.
One problem was that the compensating saddles did not have enough travel to set the intonation correctly, particulary on the bass strings. This was due to the springs 10mm or more when fully compressed. The solution was to remove the original springs and replace with smaller coil springs. These can be obtained by taking cheap ballopoint pen springs and cutting them down to the required number of turns. (Alternatively, the springs could be left off completely, just relying on the string ternsion to hold them in place. Not so good when changing strings though.)
The action height was set too low and the truss rod so tight that there was alomost no relief.
The nut had burrs on the string slots that had to be filed away.
The frets have rough edges either side of the kneck. Not bad enough to damage the shin but not that comfortable when moving up and down the kneck. Some filing is required, probably during the next string change.

A simple satin finished stratocaster copy with body made out of Alder and a medium neck made out of maple that features 22 thin frets. Otherwise a standard cheap Strat fare with S/S/S pickup configuration with a 5 way selector switch, a tremolo, volume and 2 tone knobs. All the hardware and pickups are no name Chinese manufactured stuff and the bridge is "classic" Fender style.
Made in China in 2007, and came with a gigbag, a strap and a hex nut tool.
Sound

Just what you would expect from a Strat really, compressed sound with reasonable amounts of sustain. Sounds better than the average cheap clone but does need a bit of set-up from new. I am perhaps not the best judge of this since I mainly play in Industrial bands and the guitar is so heavily processed that the basic tone of the instument is not a huge issue for me personally. However, unplugged this guitar sounds noticeably better than the other cheap strat clones that I have used through the years and that is usually a good indicator. Slightly noisy signal but that is to be expected from an S/S/S pickup configuration and of no issue for me.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:8
The set-up was reasonable but did need some work to get it perfect, pickups were fine.
Cosmetically it is incredible considering the price, a couple of plastic shavings sticking out of the pickguard are my main complaint and the hardware, knobs and switches are look cheap but work fine, really the only other criticism is that the the neck and head look extremely cheap for some reason but there is absolutely nothing wrong with the neck/head assembly whatsoever and the fretting and nut are 100% OK and inserted correctly even though they are not going to win any beauty contests.
The body finish however is perfect and in fact I have never seen a cheap guitar with this quality of a body finish, looking at the publicity material for the guitar I can actually see that the finish on the one I received is actually better than on the one that the company used for their PR, so perhaps I just got lucky. The Tremolo action is firm and as with the the finish, better than expected.
The guitar is also a bit lighter than I am used to but I am not sure if that is a plus or a minus, balance seems OK.
