This is a typical dread, full bodied acoustic. Has a nice grained solid sound board and what I believe are solid rosewood back and sides. Made in 1986 in Japan, I bought it used off ebay and got lucky. Closed tuners work as they should and hold tune very well. Has an ebony fret board or else it's very dark rosewood. Frets and board have minimal wear and have held up fine. No electronics. All the braces are still tight with nothing rattling or loose. This guitar has a very nice full sound to it.

Sound : 9
This particular Yari has a very nice full, rich sound. A dear close friend who is a professional musician (4 CD's) used to own a 12 string D28 that was stolen- he couldn't put this unit down. Has very nice bottom end and is full through the entire sound spectrum. I play through a Roland AC 60 with a HOT DOT type of pick up (older pick up I've had for quite awhile) and it sounds great played through a Fishman ProEq pre amp. I took a chance on this guitar on Ebay, but am very glad I have it. Has fantastic harmonics all the way up and down the neck, I believe it has the original saddle and nut, but what a great tone. I mostly strum and/or flat pick and this thing does both just fine. I've been playing for 34 years and this is my first 12 string, what a find. It does have 3 cracks in the sound board, one has been previously repaired, but I keep it hydrated and they don't affect the sound one bit.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
This guitar has a perfectly bookmatched sound board and very nice grained rosewood back and sides. The board has mellowed to a beautiful amber color. I don't think this unit had been played much before I got it and I do not think it was ever set up. Looks to have the original saddle and nut, but was apparently set up just fine at the factory - 'cause it has excellent harmonics throughout. Does not have a compensated saddle and still sounds great. The frets could be a tad taller for my tastes but I'm getting used to these. This guitar was allowed to dry out and in shipping to me, the sound board incurred two cracks, however, again, they do not affect the sound at all. The action is fairly low and it chords very nicely up and down the neck, don't know if the truss rod has ever been adjusted or used. Tuners are fairly smooth and honestly - this thing holds tune very well.

Reliability/Durability : 8
This guitar will ultimately be used live but I will always have a back up. Seems to be very sturdy construction and should hold up just fine. Finish on the tuners is fading, but it's 20 years old. Finish is not thin or weak and it still shines very well. Strap buttons are fine.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Have never dealt with Alvarez or Yari and hope I never have to. I do intend to some day get the cracks in the sound board repaired but that will be done locally.

Overall Rating : 9
I own a DR20 Tacoma and a 314ce Taylor, both are fine guitars and so is this Yari. I also have a number of electrics but am mellowing myself over the years and seem to do a lot more acoustic these days. I have been playing for 34 years, the last 3 to 4 mainly in churches. I do play many different types of musical styles, but mostly Christian music of all genres. I have played many different guitars over the years and am glad I found this one for what I paid, however, I was heartbroken when I opened the box and found it had cracks in the top. It ia a well made unit and is a very good looking guitar. If it was ever stolen or somehow destroyed - I would do my best to replace it with the same model and hopefully a similar year of manufacture.

1976 Japanese (all A-Y's are), solid spruce top, lam'd sides - nicely figured mahogany. Gloss finish - top/sides, satin neck (my preference). Dreadnought size. I replaced original tuners - 2 or 3 were toast - with Grover mini's. Now stays in tune much better. Rosewood fretboard/bridge. Snowflake MOP position markers (nice!).

Sound : 9
Sounds great - not to trebly like Ovations (no offense Ovation owners - I like that sound for certain apps). Nice warm sound. Sounds good with the Elixir Nanowebs, I didn't like Martin Marquis on it. Not a loud 12 string, but has a nice volume unplugged.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
I bought it used, so no idea about factory set-up. The fit and finish are GREAT! No glue drips, the bracing from what I understand is hand finished and nice. The top and side look beautiful and the finish is great for nearly a 30 yr old guitar. Action is easy to play and easily adjusted for this 12-string.

Reliability/Durability : 10
I have not played this guitar at a gig, bit plan on putting an I-Beam or K&K Pure Western pick up in it to use live. The finish as previously mentioned is great after 29 ears. I put a side heel strap button (ala Taylor) that is holding up great after 3 years. I have never broken a string on it and would not use a back-up (other than having a 2nd guitar of any kind) at a gig. As far as the tuning pegs go - 12's can be hard on them. Not because of tension, etc., but because you seem to be always re-tuning them all the time. 25 yrs was a good run for the originals.

I've been paling for over 30 years, half of that making $ playing covers. I have owned way too many guitars, and sold too many good ones I wish I still had. This one is a keeper for sure, and heck, I've kept it for over 3 years (nearly a record for me). I wish the body was more of a folk size (Taylor X14 type) for the way it handles, but the sound probably wouldn't be a good. If you see one in good shape for under $500 - buy it if you like it. Be warned though A-Y's are generally undervalued, and resale may not be great unless you find another player that appreciates Yairi's.

Made in 1984. 12 string

Sound : 10
Sounds better than the Martin 12 string (I think D28) that my local dealer has for sale at $1800. The neck feels great for a 12 string and is easy to fret and play. The overall sound is amazing!! This is my 2ed Alv. and both of them are keepers. If you are looking for an acoustic, buy an Alv. they are tops for the dollar and will only get better with time.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Everything looks good after 20 years. It has held up fine.

Look at the above.

I don't know. Never used it.

I have been playing for over 40 years now and the Alv. line is tops. Why pay thousands for a Gibson, Taylor or a Martin when these guitars sound, look and hold up as well? Do yourself a favor and buy one!!! Make some noise!!!

This guitar was made in 1974. I was working in the Vox Room Guitar Center in Sacramento, CA and had several hundred guitars to choose from. I choose this Yari as the best sounding of them all, Martins and Gibsons included. I have owned it ever since. It has a bear claw spruce top, Rosewood back and sides (I believe they are Brazillian but cannot confirm this from the manufacturere's site) ebony fretboard. 20 frets. No electronics. DY-76 satin finish Dred body fixed bridge with a wide 12 string neck.

Sound : 10
This guitar was fantastic to start and has only turned better over the years. To me it has its own soul.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Great

Reliability/Durability : 10
This guitar stays in tune and the neck has never warpped a fraction of an inch. Even after 29 years, many trips into the high Sierras and being banged around in the case, numerous bar gigs and such, the only problems are the dings that come from being a well used guitar.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never needed it.

Overall Rating : 10
I have been playing 40 + years. I own a Rainsong WS-1000, a Takamine CD 132 SC, a Fender Star +. If this guitar was stolen, I would hunt down the m----f----er and beat him to death with a cheap guitar and then go out and see if I could find another on Ebay. The sound is all that matters to me but the guitar is beautiful in every way. This is the only guitar I wouldn't sell if I got so broke I had to sell the rest.

I am describing a 1975 DY-76 12-string made 7/11/75. This guitar has a bookmatched solid spruce top with rosewood (not sure what type) back and sides (probably laminated). The saddle and the fretboard look like ebony. The neck and headstock is mahogany and the headstock has rosewood veneer. In addition, it has a herringbone purfling and soundhole design and a mosaic center strip down the back. The pickguard is tortoise shell. There is an extra fret (in addition to the 14 before the body and 6 after) right next to the nut that contacts the strings before being slotted through the actual nut. This provides very low and comfortable action. I do not see this on new 12 strings. The tuners on this guitar were replaced with Schallers and a pickup installed (I haven't tried it out yet). The nut is almost 2" wide.

Sound : 10
I went to Guitar center and played some Taylors selling for $1,200+, and they got nothing on this guitar. Think of the best sound Yairi 6 string you have played, and add 6 more strings and you are in strumming heaven. It has a very full sound, both bright highs and resonant bases with excellent sustain and projection. The combination of these tones on the bottom 3 octave strings is awesome.
One of these days I'm tuning it down a note and copying Jimi's "Here My Train a Comin" - sounds just as good as his sound on that video.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
Don't know how it came from the factory. I got this used. I can assume that the original owner was not happy with the tuners because he replaced them. For that reason I'll mark it off a little here. The action is nice and low with no buzzes. Very comfortable to play. Each individual string in the pair of strings is set close to its counterpart, making it very easy to play individual notes on the paired strings. This makes it very easy to adapt to from a standard dreadnought. The glossy finish has held up well but is showing some wear on top from somebody's sloppy strumming (has a nice vintage look though). The saddle is secure and is not pulling up.

Reliability/Durability : 10
This thing is built like a tank. I wouldn't use it as a jack stand to change the oil in my car, but other than that this thing has had no problems surviving 30 years of use by who knows how many owners. The neck and headstock are quite sturdy looking. Could probably put heavy strings on this if you wanted to punish your fingers.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Don't know.

I have played for 20+ years and own a Yairi DY-61 and a couple classical guitars. I am very impressed with the quality of Yairi guitars for the money. I do not have $2,000 to spend on a guitar, and am not willing to compromise on sound. You shouldn't have to pay that much. Martins, Taylors, and the other ones (Collings, Breedlove, etc)seem very much overpriced to me. Just because you pay big bucks does not mean you are going to get great sound. I buy guitars to play, not as "investments" or to hang on the wall. If you just go for the sound period, Yairi competes nicely. And it makes you feel good to play a guitar that costs $1k more and doesn't sound as good as what you got, and smile at the salesman as he explains its superior tonal qualites.
I do not forsee ever selling this guitar.
